CHANGING THE STATUS QUO
T
he New York/New Jersey region bursts with entrepreneurism. People from all over the globe come to establish themselves. It is what made and still makes America the “land of possibilities” to this day, and how lucky we are to be living and working in it. Although men and women alike gather in the metropolitan area to pursue their dreams, over the past couple of years, women have dominated the forefront of some of the top businesses in the city, as well as the United States as a whole, creating successful ventures and improving the lives of many through charitable giving. According to the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO), in 2014, 9.1 million firms were owned by women and employed just fewer than 8 million people. Today, one of every five firms with revenue of $1 million or greater is owned by women. I am more than pleased to share this special issue of HudsonMOD. We have had the pleasure of celebrating and honoring an elite group of women in the metropolitan area for their bold accomplishments, who have not only succeeded in the business realm, but also used their skills to carry out philanthropic initiatives that have contributed to the greater good. From the icons to local businesswomen, all of these extraordinary women are part of changing the status quo, showing future generations that women can do just as much as men, as long as they have the willpower and initiative to do so.

HEN IT COMES TO GIVING back to the community, fashion companies often lead the way. Whether they support women, fight disease or help the needy, these powerhouse brands shed welcome light on a variety of notable causes.
Same Sky
Michael Kors Created by designer Michael Kors, the Watch Hunger Stop campaign takes a stand for the global fight against hunger. With help from actress Kate Hudson, every limited-edition Bradshaw timepiece sold provides 100 children with a meal from the United Nations’ World Food Program. Michael Kors also donates $25 to the program with every purchase. More than 10 million meals have been delivered worldwide since the campaign began three years ago. People can create their very own digital T-shirt, which displays the popular hashtag #WatchHungerStop. With every purchased digital shirt, 50 children are provided meals. Because of his efforts, Michael Kors was inducted as a Global Ambassador Against Hunger for WFP.

The Same Sky Foundation was created in 2008 by Francine LeFrak to help give a second chance to women in need. The foundation provides training to build the necessary skills, confidence and support so women can be successful role models in their communities. The program, started in Rwanda, has been brought to New York City to promote opportunities for women who have been incarcerated, providing them with the tools and training to make beautiful jewelry sold by the foundation and helping them become productive members of society.

Donna Karan Fashion designer Donna Karan was inspired to create the Urban Zen Foundation by her philanthropic work in Haiti. The foundation is committed to preserving cultural and spiritual values, promoting integrative medicine and treating patients with compassion and creating programs to empower children and foster their well-being. The Urban Zen Foundation aims to raise awareness and inspire change in the healthcare system by integrating Western medicine with Eastern healing techniques.
Tadashi Shoji For a second year, Japanese-born designer Tadashi Shoji has partnered with the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation. Shoji designed the Peony Embroidered Tulle Tee featuring a Japanese-inspired peony motif. With every shirt purchased during the month of October, the designer will donate 25 percent of the proceeds to the foundation. In addition to the funds from this shirt, 25 percent of all proceeds generated from the website and the Tadashi Shoji boutique in California will benefit the foundation.

Warby Parker Through their “Buy a pair, give a pair” program, Warby Parker has provided eyeglasses for people in the developing world who have difficulty buying their own. Instead of donating eyeglasses directly, Warby Parker contributes to a nonprofit called VisionSpring, which trains low-income men and women to sell these trendy eyeglasses for affordable prices in their local communities. The “Buy a pair, give a pair” campaign has been highly effective, distributing more than one million pairs of eyeglasses worldwide.
The Life FASHION
Saks Fifth Avenue Oscar-winning actress Julianne Moore has been chosen as the ambassador for Saks Fifth Avenue’s seventeenth annual Key To The Cure campaign. This year, Jason Wu designed limitededition shirts retailing for $35 with 100 percent of the proceeds benefiting Stand Up To Cancer. The shirts are available for purchase at Saks Fifth Avenue locations as well as online. More than $36 million has been donated to cancer research and treatment through the Key To The Cure campaign.

Satya Jewelry Satya Scainetti founded Satya Jewelry in 2004 with the hope of giving back to the world. Each piece is individually designed to be a signature item. Her line includes earrings, necklaces and bracelets handcrafted with semi-precious stones and meaningful symbols. Scainetti created the Satya Foundation that supports children worldwide and gives them the chance to fulfill their dreams. One million dollars has already been donated to various children’s charities, including Ramana’s Garden and the Manjushree Orphanage.

Stella McCartney For a second year, Stella McCartney has launched lingerie designs in hot pink for October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The collection, called Alina Playing, features a bikini brief, balconette bra and soft-cup bra. Sales from this collection benefit the Linda McCartney Center and the National Breast Cancer Foundation in the United States and Australia. McCartney has created a post double-mastectomy compression bra called Louise Listening, designed to reduce post-surgery discomfort, with sales benefiting the Hello Beautiful Foundation. Supermodel Cara Delevingne has been chosen to appear in the campaign to represent young women. The hashtag #NoLessAWoman has been used to inspire women from all walks of life and give them hope.
Barneys New York Barneys’ Girl Possible campaign is in support of International Day of the Girl (declared by the United Nations) to promote gender equality. Daniella Vitale, senior executive vice president and chief operating officer, wanted to promote the development of careers for women by raising awareness of the various challenges they face. Barneys also partnered with The Girls’ Lounge that provides a safe haven for victims of domestic abuse. Girl Possible went a step further on social media by encouraging women all over the world to post a photo, finish the sentence “Anything is possible when…” and use the #GirlPossible hashtag.

THE ART OF DECLUTTERING: 8 ENTREPRENEURIAL DESIGN & ORGANIZING TIPS
C
By VANESSA DELEON
1. Start in the kitchen. Empty cabinets. Make neat piles and categorize all items: glassware, utensils, pots and pans, etc. Donate or toss the items you don’t use. Use caddies from Command 3M to store sponges and cleaning tools. Install 3M hooks with flexible metal tops that can attach to the upper wood strip inside the middle of the cabinet for hanging pots, pans and utensils. 2. Use rack dividers on the inside of your cabinets to store your dishes and glassware. Sort utensils by size or item.
LEANING HOUSE is similar to running a business. You weed out the bad, keep the good and make adjustments along the way. If you have a disorderly home, chances are your workspace is unruly too. Don’t procrastinate! Use these tips to tidy up and take control.
28 HUDSONMOD.com DECEMBER 2015
3. If you have limited kitchen space, use rustic wood crates. Place the crates horizontally or vertically to create the perfect storage. For those with larger counter space, use this room to decorate with your favorite pieces. Remember to give it a glamilistic touch, but always keep things simple.
F OOD AND DRINKS DEL FRISCO’S GRILLE IS THE NEW PLACE TO MEAT UP AND DRINK UP IN HOBOKEN. It’s where you can get together for shareable plates that you may just want to keep for yourself, or buy a round of handcrafted cocktails for your closest friends. 7. In a business setting, you need to be organized from top to bottom, and the same philosophy applies to your living space. Organization starts from the attic and goes all the way down to the basement. Although they can be used to camouflage a mess, usually an intervention is needed in these areas. The attic is best for storing holiday items in plastic bins or a wooden chest. If you don’t have an attic and live in a small studio apartment, you can store holiday items in plastic bins under the bed. When using storage bins, make sure to label them. The basement can be a great place to store rarely used items. Use plastic crates when organizing and get rid of things you will never use. Pass them along or take them to the next gift exchange at the office. 8. An entranceway sets the tone for the rest of your home. It needs to be bright, clutter-free and, most of all, welcoming. Use attractive bins to store hats, scarves and slippers. Keep a shoe tray close to the door if you like to take your shoes off. Keeping organized and stress-free will lead to letting go of things that no longer serve you. A clutter-free environment gives you room to be creative and work more efficiently. Transforming your space is one of the best ways to create success.
4. Maintaining a clear desk can be a challenge, especially when you have a busy schedule and confined space. First, snap a photo of your desk. This will give you an outsider’s perspective. Next, toss out papers you don’t need. Grab manila folders and sort loose papers. Use sticky notes as temporary name holders until you decide how you’re going to file them. Invest in a two-tier rolling filing cabinet. These are great because you can hide them under your desk. 5. Organizing your closet may be the hardest, both emotionally and physically. The first thing is to empty it completely. Let’s get real. Parting with clothing isn’t easy, but you need to let go of the old! Use slim velvet hangers, which come in several colors. Use pink for blouses, black for dresses and gray for skirts to help keep pieces in order. Keep clothing neatly hung and facing in the same direction. Shoes can be stored under the clothing in plastic bins and grouped by colors. 6. Next are dresser drawers. You might want to purchase bins that fit inside to keep things more organized. Divide your drawers into three sections and colors. Use one section for gray socks, one for white and the third for black. You can pick up colorful space dividers at IKEA. Fold your shirts and sweaters as if they are on display at your favorite department store. Try to keep shirt colors together.

A WOMAN’S PLACE IS IN THE CELLAR AT THE BERNARDS INN
I
n the last decade, women have successfully entered the traditionally man-dominated wine industry as sommeliers. One of these women is Terri Baldwin, the wine director and sommelier at The Bernards Inn. Using the extensive wine knowledge and customerservice experience she acquired through her 30-year career, Terri is dedicated to creating the most unforgettable dining experiences for guests of The Bernards Inn. Maintaining a 100-year-old legacy of outstanding hospitality, The Bernards Inn continually endeavors to offer sophisticated accommodations, world-class dining and extraordinary service. With Terri’s help and dedication, the wine program at The Bernards Inn is now one of the best in the world and has garnered “Best of Award of Excellence” by Wine Spectator for 16 consecutive years. Terri has expanded the restaurant’s wine collection from a few hundred bottles to more than 1,500, including a selection of over 60 wines by the glass in 6- or 9-ounce pours. We recently spoke with Terri about her work, The Bernards Inn’s wine program and the wine industry.

Q: We see some Finger Lakes, North Fork and New Jersey wines on your list. Is showcasing local wines a focus for you? A: Not necessarily a focus. However, when I discover great wines regardless of where they are from, I want to expose them to our customers. It is wonderful that some great wines are made on the East Coast, and having a reputation for trust, I like to encourage guests to try wines they may not have given a second thought. The Finger Lakes is a beautiful area to visit, and the wines are definitely worth seeking out. The wineries make fabulous Rieslings (dry, semi-dry, semi-sweet, sweet), but as I learned from a recent visit, they are always experimenting, planting new varietals and different clones of varietals to see what may be suited to grow best in the environment there. We currently are featuring two wines from Alba Vineyards, which is located in Milford, NJ: a white Gewürztraminer and red Chambourcin. It’s great to see how well-received both have been. Q: You offer 6- and 9-ounce pours by the glass, which I appreciate very much. Was that a decision you made based on client feedback or on the need for smaller pours to complement your multi-course menus? A: This was designed to offer customers the choice of having a glass or glass and a half of wine. Most restaurants pour 5 ounces only by the glass and we pride ourselves to pour 6. The 9-ounce (glass and a half) is designed for the customer who perhaps does not want two full glasses. We offer 3-ounce pours of wines with the tasting menu that are paired to complement, to contrast or for textures.

Q: We love the wine flights idea. How often do you change the wines featured? A: Most people are not going to open three bottles of wine at home to try side-by-side, and our wine flight program allows them this opportunity. These are offered in 2-ounce pours consisting of three different wines. The wines may change depending on season, menu, trend, setting and vintages. Q: While your wine list offers incredible cult favorites, we cannot help but notice many bottles under $40. Are there specific reasons you chose to offer these? A: I’m glad you noticed the many selections that are offered under $40. Personally, I enjoy many, if not all, the wines that are priced on our list starting at $9. Hungarian, Greek and South African white wines are fabulous, and every customer who blind-tastes them falls in love with them. The wine list is designed to offer selections in all styles and price ranges to accommodate all palates and all pocketbooks. Q: There are not many women sommeliers in the area. Where did your passion for wine come from and would you recommend this line of work to other women? A: I have a great passion for food and wine. Once you experience the way wine enhances food and likewise food

Q: We find that wine enthusiasts enjoy wine-pairing dinners, and we know you have had many top producers handle these. Are there any upcoming wine dinners our readers should be aware of? A: We are going into the busy holiday season. Therefore, at this time we do not have any wine dinners scheduled. We recently held a wine dinner with Anthony Hamilton Russell from South Africa, which was sold out. What most probably don’t realize is that wine events are scheduled based on the vineyard owner and winemaker’s own schedule; often, we may book a lastminute event if we are notified they will be in town. You can, however, mark your calendar for our next retail walk-around wine tasting, which will take place on Friday, April 3, 2016.

enhances wine, you get hooked and realize it is a different experience each time. What fun! I have gifted olfactory senses and consider it a game to describe flavors in wine as well as determine ingredients and flavors (spices, herbs) in food. Wine is a common denominator that brings friends and family together, creating memories that last a lifetime. That is a passion of my life. The wine world is a great field to be in, and I highly recommend women to become involved in any capacity, whether as a sales rep, sommelier, wine director, winemaker, retailer, winery representative or lecturer. There are so many choices!

FOR HIM: Hublot Classic Fusion Chrono Cricket The Swiss company Hublot was the official timekeeper of Cricket World Cup 2015, and took this opportunity to produce a limited edition Classic Fusion Chrono Cricket timepiece. The strap resembles the red cork ball used in the game (with white stitching completing the sporty look), while the dial showcases distinctive signs referencing cricket. At 12 o’clock is a triple applique in reference to the stumps placed on the wicket (one of the two sets of three wooden poles defended on the field by the batsmen). The hands are shaped like the paddle-like cricket bat, and the caseback bears the exclusive symbol of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 in transfer form on the sapphire crystal. The Hublot Cricket Watch is made in two metals: King Gold ($40,100) or Titanium ($18,300).

FOR HER: Patek Philippe Ladies Nautilus The inspiration for the design of Patek Philippe’s Nautilus collection, launched in 1976, was the universal shape of a porthole found on maritime vessels. The original model was the Ref. 3700/1 in steel, one of the most coveted timepieces at auction. The Rose Gold Ladies Nautilus preserves the tradition of this casually elegant classic while introducing subtle changes. Among the stunning features are the bezel set with 56 diamonds, a silvery opaline dial with gold-applied hour markers and numerals with luminescent coating, a rose gold bracelet with Nautilus fold-over clasp, and a sapphire-crystal caseback. As durable as it is beautiful, the Rose Gold Ladies Nautilus is water-resistant up to 60 meters. $47,600
FOR HIM: Rolex Day-Date 40 Rolex’s Day-Date 40 is a timepiece of both precedence and presidents. Launched in 1956, it was the first waterproof and self-winding chronometer timepiece to offer a modern calendar with an instantaneous day display, spelt out in full in a window on the dial in addition to the date. Considered the epitome of Rolex craftsmanship, the Day-Date 40 has been worn by more presidents and leaders than any other watch, earning it the nickname “the president’s watch.” The latest edition reinstitutes the President bracelet that was the hallmark of the 1956 Day-Date. $33,893-$60,838

oncealed in the rolling hills of Somerset County lies an entranceway marked with two large brick pillars with Natirar etched in each, hinting at a secret unbeknownst to many New Jersey residents. The land, undisturbed by the strains of everyday life, instantly evokes a sense of serenity to anyone who visits. Winding pathways surrounded by ever-changing treetops and the unfiltered sounds of free-flowing rivers add to the enchanting allure of this elegant property. Breathtaking views captivate you until the curving driveway reaches its endpoint, where you are met with magnificent dwellings and a mirrored glimpse into an opulent past. This perfectly preserved land is Natirar, a timeless 500-acre historic estate that truly embodies rustic refinement. Built by Walter and Kate Macy Ladd, an affluent couple who thrived during the Gilded Age, and then owned by the late King Hassan II of Morocco, Natirar has never lost its lavish grandeur since it was completed in 1912. While the majority of the estate belongs to Somerset County, a public-private partnership with Bob Wojtowicz has allowed him to transform 90 acres of the property into what is now an evolving world-class retreat. Today, Natirar has left an impressive mark on the community with its unparalleled dining experience; and within the next couple of years there will be an evolution that will transform Natirar into something even greater than what clientele are used to. Under Wojtowicz’s leadership, the carriage house and garage, two of the original estate’s buildings, have been restored and are now home to the all-encompassing Ninety Acres Culinary Center. First opened in 2009, Ninety Acres is outfitted with the original brick, ambient lighting and integrated designs that exemplify the restaurant’s elegant atmosphere. The highly acclaimed restaurant redefines the popular “farm-to-table” concept: Ninety Acres is conceived as a “table-at-thefarm” due to the vast farmland and gardens located only steps outside its main doors. All dishes are cultivated with the finest ingredients pulled from the estate’s own gardens or sourced from nearby farms to provide guests with an incomparable gourmet experience. Ninety Acres offers three types of sophisticated dining experiences. Diners who prefer a traditional open-floor setting can be seated in the Main Dining Room. Featuring a variety of delectable items including seared king salmon and wood-fired sourdough pizza, food is prepared

a la carte or seasonal prix fixe. For an unorthodox experience, guests can choose to experience Ninety Acres’ BMF (Bring Me Food) option. This restaurant within the restaurant seats diners adjacent to the open kitchen to see the action that normally takes place behind closed doors. Instead of choosing from set menus, guests are presented with a list of savory ingredients the chef will use to prepare a variety of smaller courses, including combinations such as the Natirar egg, smoked bacon, red kuri squash, sage and maple vinegar, or the lamb loin, fingerling potatoes, black olives, medjool dates and arugula. The BMF option allows you to pair each dish with wine or beer to further enhance your experience. For more casual nights, diners can sit in the Bar & Cognac Lounge, where they can grab a quick bite off the bar or the a la carte menu while sipping on hand-crafted cocktails. During warmer weather, Ninety Acres offers outdoor seating with the remarkable farm and garden serving as your backdrop.

In addition to sophisticated dining experiences, Natirar maintains an exceptional wine cellar filled with more than 1,200 types of premium and rare wines. Boasting more than 10,000 bottles in the collection, Ninety Acres offers biodynamic, organic and sustainable brands including Sercial 1910 by D’Oliveiras, a deeply complex and rich Madeira matured for more than 100 years, and Langhe Nebbiolo Ninety Acres Selection by Oddero, of which only four barrels are imported annually to the U.S. exclusively for Ninety Acres. Additionally, the culinary center is equipped with a top-ofthe-line cooking school outfitted with Sub-Zero Wolf appliances, in partnership with Ninety Acres. Located just off the Main Dining Room, daily cooking classes are offered ranging from smaller sessions for 12 to larger lectures for 20 or more. Classes include private lessons, wine and food pairing, couples surf and turf and more, and are taught by some of the greatest culinary masters. Within the next few years, other parts of Natirar’s esteemed

estate, including the opulent manor house, will undergo restoration to offer guests not only a premier culinary center, but also an allencompassing luxury resort that will rival some of the country’s top estate destinations. As Natirar’s next chapter begins, there’s significant enthusiasm for the Residences at Natirar, an imminent aspect of the property’s expansion, with interested parties already accounting for 25 percent of the units. The Residences at Natirar will enable 24 families the exclusive opportunity to live and experience the Natirar lifestyle on a permanent basis in an exclusive enclave within Natirar. Owners of the Residences at Natirar will have around-the-clock access to all the property’s amenities, including close walking access to Ninety Acres and in-house dining, exclusive access to premier on-site events such as walk-around wine tastings or sunrise yoga classes, and year-round property maintenance. Perhaps the greatest luxury of living on the premises is the perk of waking up to a breathtaking view every morning or having everything at the tip of your fingers or a combination of both.
For the Residences, Natirar has slated Stephen Perkins and his firm, 3north Architects, where he serves as a principal. The company specializes in architecture, landscape architecture, interior design and branding, and has offices in Washington, D.C., Richmond and San Francisco. Virginia Living magazine recently voted 3north as the “2015 Best Architecture Firm.” Perkins and 3north have deep experience in luxury hotels and resorts, spas and luxury leisure. Their portfolio of properties includes the Salamander Resort in Middleburg, Virginia, the Jefferson Hotel in Washington, D.C., La Costa Resort in Carlsbad, California, the Ritz-Carlton Residences in San Francisco and many other luxury domestic and international projects. Perkins and 3north bring unparalleled experience to planning and designing the Residences at Natirar. Perkins’ much-lauded luxury architecture and interior design skills have earned him the hospitality and design industry’s highest honor: induction into the Platinum Circle, in 2004. Platinum Circle’s other recent inductees include Nobu Matsuhisa, David Rockwell, Michael Graves and many other global hospitality leaders.

This includes Har-Tru tennis courts and three on-site pools: a main pool, an 1,800-square-foot family pool and the spa pool equipped with an infinity edge overlooking the Somerset Hills. As Natirar grows, so will the amenities offered. Natirar will be creating an expansion of the Social Pavilion, an exclusive haven for members. The Social Pavilion will include access to a variety of different offerings such as a high-end fitness center and specialty rooms for spin classes and yoga, to name a few. A health-focused cafe, which will serve food with ingredients pulled directly from the farm, will be incorporated into the restoration, as well as a luxurious spa cave that will offer a variety of treatments, shower rooms and a relaxation area, guaranteed to be any member’s ideal getaway. Other benefits Natirar residents may choose to relish are 24-hour concierge services, appointed butler services, exclusive spa reservations, farm and garden classes, purified water and air systems, nanny and childcare services and laundry services. THE HISTORY OF NATIRAR Erected in 1912, Natirar was built at the height of the Gilded Age, a time in American history filled with economic prosperity and abundant wealth. Opulent homes were being built all over the country, especially in the New York metropolitan area, with a focus on Somerset County and the north shore of Long Island. The Natirar estate was originally designed and built for Walter and Kate Macy Ladd, an affluent couple from New York. They thrived during this period due to inherited money from her father, who sold his oil company to John D. Rockefeller. At the time, Somerset County was the ideal location to live for many upper-class families because of the extensive amount of land that could be acquired and the Peapack-Gladstone railroad line (often referred to as the Millionaire’s Express), which made New York City easily accessible. The Ladds contracted two premium architects to develop their highly coveted home and estate: Guy Lowell, known for building the Manhattan Courthouse and Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and Henry Hardenberg, famous for the Plaza Hotel in New York City. The final outcome was nothing less than lavish. Natirar was comprised of many different buildings including the main manor house, cottages, carriage house and garage. The manor house, the estate’s prime focus, sits atop one of the property’s many hills and was designed with oak paneling, teak floors, limestone trim, slate roofs and detailed molded ceilings, all adding to the home’s grandeur. During the Ladds’ reign at Natirar, Mrs. Ladd utilized her affluence to create the Kate Macy Ladd Fund and used parts of the premises to house convalescent women. After the Ladds’ death, Natirar continued to serve as home to these women until it was sold in 1983 to King Hassan II of Morocco. Natirar remained in the king’s ownership until his death in 1999, and eventually his son Mohammed VI sold the lavish estate to Somerset County for over $20 million.

ARIA ARTIRO THE FACE OF FOX
While the world may know Maria Bartiromo as the wellspoken, business-driven news anchor for Fox Business, there are other factors—besides business talk—that drive her to be the successful woman she is today. By Mike Banka
OMO
M
ARIA BARTIROMO IS THE FACE OF Fox Business, and not just because it’s a pretty face, although it certainly is that. Bartiromo is the face of Fox Business because nobody talks business better, at Fox or arguably anywhere else. When you hear Bartiromo speak, you immediately realize why this is the case. Her voice is vibrant and alive, energizing like that first cup of coffee in the morning (an indulgence she hopefully partakes in, since her day starts at 3:30 a.m.). It demands to be paid attention to, as a true news anchor’s should. There’s another reason you can’t resist it: Maria Bartiromo is whip-smart. What she has to say about business is even more compelling than the voice she says it with. Put the two together and you have something special. It’s why she was the first person (man or woman) to report live from the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. It’s why she hosts two TV programs: Mornings with Maria and Sunday Morning Futures. It’s why she has a Rolodex of contacts so thick you can’t tie a rope around it. Like those old E.F. Hutton commercials, when Maria Bartiromo talks, people listen. And that includes Trump, Carson, Rubio, Cruz, Bush and all the other Republican presidential hopefuls she moderated during the last GOP debate. Besides being an adjunct professor at the Stern School of Business at New York University, Bartiromo is a member of the school’s board of trustees. She also serves on the boards of the New York Ballet, the Girl Scout Council of Greater New York and Public Education Needs Civic Involvement and Leadership, dedicated to improving New York City high schools. Her web-based feature, “Maria Bartiromo’s Dollars and Cents,” aspires to remedy the nation’s financial illiteracy.

After moderating last month’s debate, who do you think will be the GOP’s presidential nominee? It’s very hard to tell right now. When you look at previous elections, you really did not have the clear frontrunner at this moment in the cycle. Having said that, the reason the debates this year are so important is people are desperate for a conversation about the issues that really matter to them. After moderating the debate, I got so much outreach from the biggest of the big from corporate America and from business in general who said, “Maria, good job. Thank you.” That was because people today are truly desperate to hear a conversation about the economic issues that affect their families and their homes. They want to understand better what each of the nominees brings or doesn’t bring to the table. I think it’s great that we’re hearing from the candidates and they’re being put to the test. Whoever is the next president certainly faces a myriad of challenges. It really is a very scary moment in time. When you consider what just happened in Paris and Mali, people are justifiably nervous, and that’s on top of an already fragile situation they face in their own economic lives. With business people like Donald Trump and Carly Fiorina seeking the nomination and the economy still shaky, maybe this is the right time for someone with a business background to be in the White House. What do you think? Well, I don’t think a businessperson would necessarily be a bad thing. I think the fact that Donald Trump, Ben Carson and Carly Fiorina have done well in the polls illustrates people’s anger. They
have had it. They’ve lost trust in the establishment. They are waiting and desperate for leadership. And so Donald Trump is not worried about being politically correct. He’s basically telling people the bottom line. That kind of talk right now is really resonating because people are upset. What made you want to be a business journalist? I studied business at NYU. Then I changed my major to journalism because my mother told me she thought I’d be good at it. And I loved it. In my final semester, I got an internship at CNN in the entertainment division. When I graduated, I stayed on as a production assistant in general news. Then there was a job opening at CNN business news and I inquired about it because I had a background in business from NYU. At that time, business television was in its infancy. I took the job as a production assistant on the morning show, and my shift started at 4:00 a.m. I worked my way up to assignment editor after five years. I was producing and writing pieces and then someone else would go on the air with them. Stuart Varney was there and so was Lou Dobbs, who I still work with 25 years later. At that point, I really knew what I wanted to do. I loved going out into the field and interviewing people and was establishing a really good Rolodex. When something happened in business news and the markets, I knew who to call.
So what changed? The network wanted to put me back as a producer where I’d be in the control room all the time and wouldn’t be able to go out and interview people anymore. So I decided to put my own tape together and sent it to CNBC because it was the only other network respecting business information. I was brought on as a producer, and although they were happy with my work, they told me they wanted me to go on the air. I said, Oh my goodness! I went on the interview and met with Roger Ailes and we really hit it off. Something inside me told me I got the job even though they hadn’t offered it to me yet. Even before I knew I had the job, I drove into New York City and bought three new dresses. I came back home and was so tired. I had to get up the next night at 3:30 in the morning to go to my CNN job. Then I got the call from CNBC. They said they wanted me to start working there and were going to make me an onair reporter. I was so delighted! Hitting it off with Roger Ailes was obviously pivotal for you. He was my mentor. Under his tutelage, I became the first person to broadcast from the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. It was a rough-and-tumble world back then because the New York Stock Exchange had 5,000 people on the floor dispersed between five rooms. Today it has 500 people and three of the five rooms have been closed down because the trading is happening electronically. I spent 20 years at CNBC, and it was a fantastic career. “Was” is the operative word, though. Yes. That’s because three years ago I was rethinking what I wanted to do and recognized I was ready to broaden my ambitions. I didn’t want to be married to the trading desk. The job had become so stock market-centric. So when my contract was up, Roger Ailes offered me a fantastic opportunity to come work with him to help build the Fox Business Network as well as create a program for me on the Fox News channel, Sunday Morning Futures, which right now is the highest-rated on cable on Sunday. I jumped at the chance. Have some of the old male prejudices against women in business changed since the time you started broadcasting from the stock-exchange floor? Oh, absolutely. Women are rising in all industries. There are many women today on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange, there are many women covering business information, and there are many women on Wall Street. When you look at all that, you have to be happy with the way women’s participation has risen, but we have to continue breaking glass ceilings.

You have to be happy with the way women’s participation has risen, but we have to continue breaking glass ceilings.

What advice would you give to college graduates who want to go into business? Number one: you absolutely have to love what you do. Nothing is more important as a first step. You don’t want to go into a profession where you think you can get rich overnight. You don’t want to choose something that you feel you have to. It’s really about waking up and being so excited about what you’re doing. Number two: you have to work hard. There are no shortcuts. In order to work hard, it’s very helpful to love what you do. Number three: always do the right thing. We all know in our heart of hearts what the right thing is, and what isn’t. You must always do the right thing because the only thing that will follow you wherever you go is your reputation. You have to cherish it and protect it. I also believe internships are very helpful to get your foot in the door, and by working hard the powers-that-be can see what you’re capable of. What advice would you give to people already in the workforce? I would say it’s very important to arm yourself with the right skill set that will be required in tomorrow’s economy. The fact is, today’s economy is very different from what it was just 10 years ago as a result of technology. Today, you’ve got automation. You’ve got machines and robotics. You’ve got a lot of things happening that are replacing human beings in terms of jobs. If you could talk to one person from history, who would it be? Winston Churchill because that moment in time during World War II was so extraordinary and required such courage and such leadership. We all could learn from the way America and Europe and its leaders Roosevelt and Churchill, reacted and acted. There was never a time when the world was so tested.
50 HUDSONMOD.com DECEMBER 2015
Who has been your greatest inspiration? My mom. I’m very close to my family. On September 11, I was on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange and my family was trying to reach me all day, but I was on television. I was so grateful to be able to go on and talk about the fact that everyone was accounted for at the New York Stock Exchange. You brought up World War II, and 9/11 also changed the world in such a profound way. My mother is my best friend, my sister is my second best friend, and my husband is there too, either one or two. I think he’s number one as well, along with my mom. What do you do for fun? I like to exercise. I like biking a lot. We recently bought a house near the beach, and so my husband and I have been walking on the beach and biking near the beach. It’s just been beautiful. I like to get out. I like to hike mountains. I enjoy yoga too. I go to bed early at 8:30 p.m. and I’m up at 3:30 a.m. I have some time to myself on Friday and Saturday, but I mostly stay busy and I’m loving it. It’s just so interesting. I think we’re at such a critical moment for our national security and the economy.

EDIE LUTNICK It took Edie Lutnick, whose younger brother Gary died on 9/11, all of three days after the terrorist attacks to establish the Cantor Fitzgerald Relief Fund, a charity that addresses the short- and long-term needs of victims of terrorism and disaster. The Cantor Fitzgerald Relief Fund has distributed more than a quarter of a billion dollars in relief aid and has given millions to direct service charities as well. Lutnick also co-founded the annual Charity Day, in which all of Cantor Fitzgeralds’ and BGC Partners’ profits on each September 11 are donated to the fund. To date, more than $113 million has been raised and distributed. Lutnick is a labor lawyer by trade who had offices in One World Trade Center. SHARON SEITZMAN Sharon Seitzman has a long and distinguished background in all aspects of managed care, especially the development and implementation of employer-sponsored wellness programs. Before becoming president of Qualcare, she was the Chief Operating Officer at United HealthCare of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, and held administrative positions at First Option Health Plan and CIGNA Healthplan. Seitzman has won recognition from several esteemed organizations. She was an honoree of the Executive Women of New Jersey’s Salute to the Policy Makers, was named one of New Jersey’s 2013 Best 50 Women in Business, and was nominated for the prestigious Greater Monmouth Chamber of Commerce Athena Award, which recognizes outstanding contributions in assisting women to reach their full potential.
LINDA BOWDEN The saying goes that there are no second acts in American lives. Considering she left her elementary school teaching job after seven years to try her hand at finance and is now the regional president for northern New Jersey of PNC, the nation’s fifthlargest bank, Linda Bowden could rightly beg to differ. She’s gone from mentoring classrooms full of kids to overseeing 2,300 employees and more than 300 bank branches. Who can say that doing one didn’t prepare her for doing the other? Bowden is active in a range of community programs. She serves on the board of the Drumthwacket Foundation, as well as the executive committees of the Adler Aphasia Center in Maywood and the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra. An executive committee member of the New Jersey State Chamber of Commerce and Secretary of the Board for Choose New Jersey, she is also a member of the board of trustees of Newark Celebration 350, the New Jersey Performing Arts Center and the William Paterson University Foundation.

SHERI MCCOY After 30 years of employment with Johnson & Johnson, including a stint as Vice Chairman and member of the Office of the Chairman overlooking the pharmaceutical and consumer business divisions, Sheri McCoy was passed over for a promotion to Chief Executive Officer. She did what any self-respecting high-ranking executive would have done: she resigned from Johnson & Johnson, effective April 18, 2012. A mere five days later, she started as the new CEO of Avon Products. McCoy’s self-stated goal is to restore the struggling iconic beauty brand to its leadership position in global direct selling, as well as continuing to ensure that the company lives up to its mission of empowering women. McCoy presides over the Avon Foundation, the largest global corporate philanthropy dedicated to women’s causes, including breast cancer and domestic violence.

JENNIFER BUFFET In 2006, Warren Buffett, Jennifer Buffett’s father-in-law, gave her and her husband Peter $1 billion with the stipulation that they give it all away. Warren’s only instruction was for the couple “to go where people aren’t necessarily going,” to pick a place where the couple could really make a difference, and stick with it. That same year, the Buffetts established the NoVo Foundation. Its priorities include empowering women and girls as a means of ending poverty, promoting healthy child development, and stopping gender-based violence around the world. NoVo invests in many different initiatives, from working with the International Rescue Committee to end violence against women and girls in Liberia, to supporting centers for rape victims in Sierra Leone and Ivory Coast, to helping children in the slums of red-light districts in Bangladesh and India to stay in school. When the Buffetts started their foundation, they made an agreement to work on it together, as a partnership with each having an equal say.

As a child, Irene Rosenfeld dreamed of being president. Although that aspiration has (so far) eluded her, being chairperson and CEO of Mondelez International, a $36-billion multinational confectionery, food and beverage conglomerate spun off from Kraft Foods and employing 107,000 people, is no mean achievement. It’s not surprising that someone who’s spent most of her professional life in the food industry would be invested, literally and figuratively, in the fight against global hunger. Part of that effort includes an initial $3.8-million contribution to Project Laser Beam, a five-year, $50-million public-private partnership led by the UN World Food Programme aimed at eradicating child malnutrition in Indonesia and Bangladesh. Over the past 25 years, Rosenfeld’s former Kraft Foods and its foundation have donated more than $1 billion in cash and food to hunger-relief organizations.

Filled with diverse landscapes, trullis, copious amounts of olive trees, delicious cuisine and magnificent masserie to ensure your Italian getaway is utterly relaxing, Puglia will make travelers fall head over heels for the heel of the Italian boot. By Nicole Fonzino
Uncovering Italy’s Best-Kept Secret
THE THINKING TRAVELLER
W
HEN I STEPPED onto the tarmac at the Brindisi Airport, I expected to be greeted by luscious, green rolling hills vigorously sweeping the Puglian backdrop as I had experienced in past excursions to Italy. However, unlike Tuscan landscapes, I saw something completely brand-new, but nonetheless picturesque: flatland drenched with rich red soil and sprouting olive groves that seemed to carry on for hundreds of miles. Throughout my hour-long car ride to the luxurious Masseria Cisterna Rossa (my accommodations for the greater part of my week’s stay, thanks to the luxury villa rental company The Thinking Traveller’s Think Puglia), my eyes were transfixed on the terrain, absorbing everything and anything my eyes could zero in on. As a recurrent Italian adventurer (I studied abroad in Florence in spring 2012 and have visited relatives on separate occasions), I was blown-away by the broad, yet bewitching variances Puglia had to offer; but, more so in the fact that many of the area’s premier destinations remain
untraveled by the majority of Italian excursionists. Puglia’s seascapes and secluded havens are often overshadowed by Italy’s more popular hotspots such as Rome, Milan, Venice and Florence. In many ways, the small number of travelers has given the southern region a great advantage. Because the masses normally flock to the country’s northern areas, it has helped preserve the beauty and authenticity of the Puglian culture. Without the overwhelming commercialism found in many of the prevailing cities, those who visit the heel of the boot are guaranteed to experience a rich, undoctored Italian getaway. Yet, something tells me that Puglia won’t remain in the shadows for much longer. More and more people are catching on to its quaint, charming vacation spots. A-list celebrities including Jude Law, Sienna Miller, Justin Timberlake, Jessica Biel, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard are often seen there, and Italians have been buying vacation homes in the heel of the boot instead of the western islands of Capri and Sardinia. I certainly cannot blame them.
Situated between the Ionian and Adriatic seas, Puglia offers the full package: beguiling beaches, diverse landscapes, historical remnants and remarkable landmarks, not to mention distinctive cuisine that includes spectacular seafood dishes, orecchiette pasta plates, a variety of cheeses (I highly recommend burrata), taralli and pasticciotto (custard-filled pastries). The list goes on and on. Puglia also produces nearly 40 percent of Italy’s olive oil, not surprising given the vast number of olive trees, and 17 percent of the country’s wine, with Negroamaro and Primitivo being the area’s predominant grapes. Food and sightseeing aside, perhaps the most enchanting aspect of Puglia’s culture lies within its luxury dwellings. Everywhere you turn, these strikingly unique homes appear on the horizon: seafront villas that stretch across the region’s cliffsides, trulli (dwellings with cone-shaped roofs), and private masserie (restored farmhouses) tucked away in Puglia’s terrain. All of them will undoubtedly take your breath away and add to what makes the region truly unlike any other part of Italy.

WHEN I PULLED UP to the secluded masseria in Ruffano, I was captivated by the sheer allurement of the property’s vibrance. With its manicured lawns, lemon trees, orchard, gorgeous swimming pool and, of course, it’s very own olive grove, Masseria Cisterna Rossa was definitely a sight for sore, jet-lagged eyes. What used to be an old agricultural estate, Masseria Cisterna Rossa has been restored to its full potential; and now, like many of Puglia’s revived masserie, serves as a luxury getaway or private dwelling. Masseria Cisterna Rossa was just as aesthetically pleasing from the inside as it was on the outside. The large, spacious parlor room with arched stone ceilings evokes the building’s past life, while modern paintings reflect the new persona it has taken on since its restoration. As I wandered about the property, I noticed each of the masseria’s five bedrooms was more refined than the next, and little surprises popped up around every corner such as the glass-blown light fixtures and the massive al fresco dining area situated beneath a veranda. After settling into one of the luxury bedrooms, I headed to the masseria’s rooftop terrace for an aperitivo, a picture-perfect

sunset over the vibrant olive grove and a glass of fine Puglian wine. My stay at Masseria Cisterna Rossa was one of the most relaxing weeks I’ve had in a while, where I let go of my inhibitions and absorbed the natural beauty all around me. As one of The Thinking Traveller’s “Think Exquisite” villas, this getaway offers first-class amenities way beyond its breathtaking landscapes and opulent interiors. Besides total exclusivity from any neighbors, the lavish villa includes a daily maid service, woodburning oven for those intimate and delicious Italian dinners, and the option to request an on-premises cook, private cooking lessons or a masseuse throughout the duration of your stay. The best perk, however, is the surrounding area, which includes old-world cities such as Gallipoli (meaning “beautiful city”), a coastal town located on the Ionian with an impressive view and thriving seafood eateries, as well as countless premier beaches including Lido CocoLoco. Whether you’re looking to explore the nearby attractions or sip some vino poolside, Masseria Cisterna Rossa does not disappoint. Trust me.

ENCLOSED BETWEEN THE IONIAN AND ADRIATIC, Puglia offers astonishing seascapes that stretch for miles; and with beautiful sealine views come breathtaking homes. With the Adriatic right in its backyard, L’Argentiera is the epitome of a private coastal oasis. The all-white facade resembles a villa straight out of Greece, which is ironic because with certain wind currents, guests receive a clear view of Corfu and parts of Albania. With an extraordinarily large backyard, L’Argentiera provides multiple outdoor terraces overlooking an ultraluxurious infinity pool and outdoor sitting area, evoking a serene atmosphere. The villa’s property kisses the sea, which can be accessed directly from a gate leading down to its rocky surfaces. You can soak up the sun on designer lounge chairs or on natural platforms. Options like these are always nice to have. L’Argentiera’s interior follows the same all-white motif as the exterior; however, pops of vibrant blues radiate off the accent pillows, colorful photographs and other contemporary home accessories, giving guests coastal, yet modern vibes. Large windows positioned throughout the three-floored villa grant access to impeccable sea views and outdoor balconies. With 18 bedrooms, you can travel to L’Argentiera with multiple couples (or a large family) and fit comfortably. Guests are provided with an onsite groundskeeper, daily maid service, a wood-burning oven, and close walking proximity to local shops and restaurants. The villa is located near Puglia’s Santa Maria di Leuca, a sanctuary for the Virgin Mary, and Otranto, Italy’s easternmost town filled with thousands of years of tumultuous history. The best amenity L’Argentiera has to offer guests? The villa is in agreement with select local restaurants that will provide a shuttle service to and from the villa so you never have to count each glass of wine. You can even arrive in pure Italian style: by boat.

Trullo Terra Dolce IN VALLE D’ITRIA, PEOPLE MARVEL OVER TRULLI: cylindrical homes with cone-shaped roofs. Despite the distinctive, fairytale-like appearances of these properties, these dwellings offer fully functioning living quarters. In fact, many trulli are being restored into luxurious private homes, such as Trullo Terra Dolce, my accommodations for my last night’s stay in Puglia. Trullo Terra Dolce exudes magic, and I’m not saying that just because of its storybook appearance. The landscape is meticulously manicured with flourishing flowers, and a winding pathway wrapped around the perimeter gives separate access to each of the four bedrooms. Given a tour of the grounds by the owner, I gained an insider’s perspective of the home’s effervescent personality. During the room-by-room tour of Trullo Terra Dolce, I learned that the owners are frequent world travelers. I could immediately tell by the eclectic furnishings incorporating splashes of colorful Indian accents mixed with traditional Puglian furniture. I also learned that the shell-shaped stone basin is one of the owner’s favorite features, along with the lavish pool overlooking the grounds (complete with a waterfall shower) and a ping-pong table located in the backyard patio. Trullo Terra Dolce offers guests alcove beds, stone fireplaces and, best of all, complete serenity. After the grand tour, I enjoyed my last night in the heel of the boot in true Italian fashion: drinking wine and eating pizza made in the trulli’s very own wood-burning pizza oven. MARIA GIULIA MARAMOTTI
M
aria Giulia Maramotti seems like a typical New Yorker. She rides her bike around the city, takes strolls along the High Line and visits local museums in her spare time. However, she is anything but typical. Maria Giulia is the granddaughter of Achille Maramotti, founder of the Italian fashion powerhouse MaxMara. As a descendant of the designer, Maria Giulia has grown up knowing nothing other than MaxMara. “It’s in my blood,” she says, which is why it’s fitting she has become a well-known face of the brand, taking on roles as the U.S. director of retail and global ambassador. Since then, Maria Giulia has brought forth new ideas. “We will always maintain our signature MaxMara minimal aesthetic,” she says, “but you will also see a touch of playfulness and unexpected details that keep the brand fresh.” Besides helping the company evolve, Maria Giulia has taken part in MaxMara’s support of various initiatives, including Women in Film and their Face of the Future Award. She recently collaborated with the Whitney Museum to celebrate the opening of their new Manhattan location. HudsonMOD caught up with Maria Giulia to speak about MaxMara, what it’s like to be the global ambassador of one of the biggest fashion companies in the world, and carrying on her grandfather’s legacy.
By NICOLE FONZINO
Q: What change do you hope to bring to the company? What’s the biggest you’ve initiated thus far? A: When I first came to the U.S., I saw the need for an elevated suiting collection within the company, based on our clients’ demands. As a brand dedicated to women, largely professional workingwomen, we needed a contemporary suit for executives to feel professional but also chic and feminine at the same time; which is how our Tailored Suit Project was born. It’s a collection of contemporary suiting composed of classic materials within modern silhouettes that can be worn together or as separates. Q: MaxMara has a long history of supporting various empowering initiatives for women. Why is it important for you to support these groups? A: We have always been committed to celebrating women. Global, intelligent, strong and modern women are our muses and our core clients. From design to inspiration to our brand initiatives such as Women in Film and Art Prize for Women, we continue our support and development of women, especially within the arts. When my grandfather started the company in the ‘50s, he originally designed for the wives of doctors and lawyers. Now we are designing for doctors and lawyers themselves. Women’s roles have drastically changed and will continue to evolve into greater heights, which is a cultural transformation we are proud to be part of. Q: Tell us about your partnership with the Whitney Museum. A: We have been organically developing our relationship with the Whitney for several years. Our family has loaned artworks from our private collection in the past, and MaxMara has supported the Whitney Art Party for the last three years. With Renzo Piano as the architect of the Whitney, having two Italian houses together was the perfect opportunity to celebrate and create a product that represents true Italian craftsmanship. Q: How would you describe your personal style? A: I like contrast. My style is a mix of work and play. My favorite look is a perfect blazer with rolled sleeves, a T-shirt, jeans and a great shoe, either a playful heel or a classic loafer. Q: From your perspective, what’s the biggest style difference between Milan vs. New York City? A: New York City style is edgier with more risks. In New York, anything goes. In Milan, style is chic but classic.
