FROM BEVERLY HILLS TO SHORT HILLS

H

UDSONMOD HAD the honor

of welcoming another luxury brand to our area. José Eber chose none other than Short Hills as the home of his first-ever East Coast salon. The grand opening was celebrated with a private red carpet event hosted by HudsonMOD for more than 400 of our closest friends. Bentleys and Rolls-Royces lined the streets of Millburn while guests walked the red carpet and were greeted with signature cocktails. The event was capped by an electric violinist performing beside models styled in Thierry Mugler by Gito of Millburn in collaboration with José Eber’s creative director, Yoav Tauber. Owner Marc Farbstein eloquently summed up the evening this way: “José Eber has stood for upscale and luxury his entire career; HudsonMOD is upscale and luxury.” As we approach HudsonMOD’s three-year anniversary in June, I am honored and humbled by my recent nomination as a Leading Women Entrepreneur. Leading Women Entrepreneurs (LWE) was founded by Linda Wellbrock in 2011. Since its inception, Linda has created a network of like-minded successful women who support other women’s businesses and philanthropic initiatives. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting some of them and working with Linda, and the strength of this organization is extraordinary. HudsonMOD has dedicated its fall issue to highlighting accomplished business women

12

throughout New York, New Jersey and beyond. The issue will focus not only on their achievements in the board room but also on their dedication to key causes and to positively impacting the lives of others. For one, HudsonMOD’s own Vanessa Deleon helped establish Design Angels of America to create home interiors that provide furnishings, design services and hope for families and individuals who have experienced displacement due to unforeseen or disastrous life circumstances. I know that the effects Vanessa and these other empowering women will have on society will undoubtedly be positive.

THE SAGAMORE RESORT By SIMON MURRAY

16

HUDSONMOD.com MAY/JUNE 2015

H

OLED UP IN THE CONCRETE confines of New York City, James Fenimore Cooper wrote one of the most widely read works of the 19th century, The Last of the Mohicans. A stark contrast to the urban jungle growing at the time of its publication, The Last of the Mohicans is set in upstate New York during the French and Indian War, in the state’s idyllic green wilderness. It’s a place as wild today as it was in Cooper’s time, where majestic palates of color tint clouds at sunset, throwing the ridged shoulders of the Adirondack Mountains into shadow. The mountain air is always fresh and stars always shine bright, clustered like diamonds in the sky.

TH E SAG AMORE RESORT

EXPERIENCE

The Life EXPERIENCE

The Sagamore Resort has a variety of swimming pools for guests to enjoy including a Splash Pool Bar, jacuzzis and an outdoor terraced pool deck.

Surviving two separate fires, the Sagamore shuttered its doors in 1981. In 1983, one hundred years after the first resort opened, the property underwent a $75-million restoration. Described by the staff as a “loving” refurbishment, a majority of the property was restored to reflect the resort’s rich heritage, complete with clapboard siding and classic Victorian architecture. More recently, an outdoor pool with a splash pool bar has been added, inviting guests to unwind with creative libations (such as a Sundowner Cocktail) as the setting sun caresses the Adirondacks and slowly dips into the languid waters. Today, the Sagamore remains an enduring, reclusive, scenic idyll. It’s a passageway to a timeless place where land meets sky, water, stars and nature—sometimes all at once. Cooper knew this feeling all too well. He might have been writing in New York City, but surely he had this natural theater in mind when he wrote his famous novel. It’s a place that wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to call his escape. It can be yours too.

TH E SAG AMORE RESORT

On the shores of Lake George, the Sagamore Resort in Bolton Landing, New York, has welcomed guests for more than a century. The sprawling, AAA Four Diamond resort, ensconced in a thorny crown of evergreens, occupies Green Island—a private, 70-acre island with panoramic views of Lake George, so named in honor of their king by the invading British army. To the victors go the spoils. An elegant nod to a bygone era, the historic Sagamore offers guests 137 rooms and suites, with contemporary Adirondack-inspired décor and a choice of lake or garden views. Since 1982, it has been an official landmark listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The Hermitage, originally a 19th-century carriage house, is a self-contained executive retreat with 10 bi-level suites overlooking the lake. Available for small groups or individuals, the enclaves boast spacious living quarters and dining rooms with fully equipped kitchens, refrigerators, cooktops, microwave ovens and granite countertops. Upstairs, guests are treated to lofted chambers with beds fit for an English monarch and full bathrooms. Taking its name from the Algonquian word for chief, the Sagamore Resort is a reference to Chingachgook, the fictional titular warrior chief of The Last of the Mohicans. Reportedly, Cooper decided to write the story after visiting the expansive Lake George and the nearby free-flowing Glens Falls. The Sagamore Resort’s illustrious history begins more than 100 years ago. Hotel operator Myron O. Brown, impressed by the verdant fir trees, misty mountains and burbling waterfalls (which would inspire, along with Cooper, the landscape impressionist paintings of the Hudson River School), decided to build an exclusive resort community in the Adirondacks. Opening its doors in 1883, it quickly became the social epicenter for the wealthy residents along Lake George’s western shore, appropriately named Millionaires’ Row, and a diverse international clientele.

SARTORIALLY SAVVY “I KNEW THE MINUTE I walked into

Domingo’s Gramercy Park townhouse I had brought the right clothes and colors to speak to his taste and style. I started with a striking floral blazer from Neiman Marcus to lend a sense of play, plus a basic black fitted Zegna shirt that lets the bright print carry all the attention. Domingo loves black so I immediately knew these quirky black, glitter loafers from Jimmy Choo would be the perfect finish to the destroyed jeans from 7 Vintage. Domingo complemented the entire outfit with his very own vintage studded belt. From head to toe, he instantly became the posterboy for spring in New York City.” — G.B.

families negotiate complicated legal processes. Steven Resnick, an experienced lawyer at the firm, handles cases involving divorce, domestic violence and custody and violation issues. In this HudsonMOD exclusive, he brings to light many lesser-known aspects of family law. What is the biggest misconception your clients have about family law in New Jersey?

A: The most common one I hear is people believe an asset or a debt is in the name of one spouse only and the other spouse therefore does not share in the asset or debt. A name on an account is generally not relevant to whether the assets or debt is marital or not. It’s usually marital if it was acquired during the marriage. What’s the average duration of a case?

A: The case ends when there is a settlement or when it goes to trial. I have had cases lasting from 17 days to over six years and everything in between. Since every case is different, there is no average. Is there legal separation in the State of New Jersey?

A: No. This state does not recognize the concept. Parties are “legally separated” to use that phrase when a divorce complaint is filed by one side. What happens with pets during a divorce case? Are they treated the same way as children or does the state take different actions?

FAMILY LAW: FAQS OF THE MATTER

T

HE SHEER MULTITUDE of subjects covered under family law—often referred to as matrimonial law— makes one’s head spin. Adoption, abuse cases, property settlements, alimony cases and divorce settlements are just a few. Complicating matters is the fact that rules and regulations for family law can vary from state to state. The Budd Larner Law Firm is one of the most prominent firms handling cases of this type. With an office in Short Hills, along with Cherry Hill and Philadelphia, Budd Larner lawyers help

A: The court used to treat pets as simple property. Now, there are cases involving pet visitation and sharing of responsibilities such as vet bills and [doggie] daycare. The trend is to treat pets as more than just simple property. Are there common mistakes made in divorce cases that you would strongly advise your clients to try to avoid?

A: Yes. There are a few common errors, such as not discussing issues with your lawyer before making decisions or acting on an issue, involving children in the various disputes, and flaunting a new dating relationship to the other spouse or the children. These errors usually delay the case, exacerbating the animosity between spouses and making the case more complicated and expensive than necessary. I also find it problematic when clients do not engage in some type of counseling to help them through this difficult process.

he gregarious, self-effacing man with paint-spattered hands telling his story in his Gramercy Park studio may have a lot in common with some of the artists he admires—van Gogh (lust for life), Matisse (playfulness) and Leonardo da Vinci (flair for the enigmatic)—but he won’t allow himself to be classified as the New York Times tried to do in a 2013 cover story. The Times wrote, “…And then there is Domingo Zapata, a 38-year-old Spanish artist who counts Leonardo DiCaprio and George Soros as clients, parties with Lindsay Lohan and Scarlett Johansson and appears regularly in the pages of the New York Post, which has called him the ‘next Andy Warhol.’” The Times concluded the story on a somewhat comic note: “Arty Do`zortsev, an enthusiastic, fast-talking liquor distributor, warmly greeted the painter. Mr. Zapata may still be unknown to the fine art crowd, but if it were up to the liquor distributor, his paintings would already be hanging in MoMA. ‘Domingo is the best,’ Mr. Dozortsev said. ‘This guy is the next Basquiat.’” Domingo downplays the glam aspect of his daily life, though there is that too. His passion is painting, which he does 12 hours a day. Then he goes out and paints the town red. Born in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, Zapata studied art and business at Regents College in London and attended the American University in Washington, D.C. Twenty years ago he made his way to New York to follow his passion. “I don’t remember a day in my life without painting or drawing or sketching, and I hope this never changes,” he says. Besides the art that consumes him, Zapata’s passion is his family, despite separating from his wife Stacy Belyea in 2007. She lives in upstate New York with the couple’s two sons. “They come here every other weekend, and I have them most of the holidays,” he says. “We go into the studio and we paint. They have been in the studios since before they could even walk. It’s amazing what they can do at this age. That doesn’t mean I want them to be artists. I hope [the urge] stays with them forever, but they can be whatever they want. “I’m just so happy. My ex-wife is an amazing woman. She is a great mom and a great friend. I would love to have more kids if the opportunity comes and if there is a woman in my life who is like my ex-wife.” There actually is someone special in his life, he confesses. “Yes, and she is wonderful and I am in love and happy. Nobody famous or anything. She is great and funny and she’s got my back. She keeps me in the studio and doing things. I’m very happy to have her.” Zapata maintains studios in his Gramercy Park townhouse in New York City, the Design District in Miami and Hollywood. In

these private ateliers, his website bio explains, he produces dynamic paintings as well as sculpture. He paints in both oil and acrylic, often incorporating mixed-media, collage and graffiti. The result is lively, sexy and kinetic, an art form that owes much to the NeoExpressionist style of late-modernist or early-postmodern painting and sculpture that emerged in the late 1970s. Zapata has built a body of work characterized by themes of sexuality, opulence and vitality in a cosmically beautiful style. He has done many different things to support his art. He’s been a songwriter (co-writing lyrics for Michael Jackson and Jon Secada) and a record label executive, but a savvy investment in the online dating site udate.com was the catalyst that allowed him to paint full time when the site was bought by Barry Diller’s company in 2002, earning him a $300,000 windfall. Today, Zapata’s work sells for $50,000 to $195,000. He is one of 30 living artists whose pieces have sold in the six figures. “I was involved in other things before I could become an artist and live from that,” he says. “Coming into a bit of money always helps, but the opportunity that changed my life is when somebody who was a collector said, ‘Okay, I am going to help you; I’m going to show your paintings in my house and invite my friends who are collectors and are in the art world.’ That’s what really made it happen.” He is talking about his first show, the result of the artist meeting a wealthy contractor and polo enthusiast named Michael Borrico, who admired his paintings of polo horses. In 2004, a private show was held at Mr. Borrico’s home, where financier Soros and other guests became Zapata enthusiasts. “Having a bit of savings helped me concentrate more,” he says, “but at the end of the day, being an artist is not about being successful. It’s about creating and expressing one’s self. The best artists in the world, historically, were not recognized when they were alive.” His talk about dead artists is apropos in the same way as a

Zapata’s eccentric Gramercy Park studio is filled with life, colors and a multitude of his extraordinary paintings.

Zapata is known for transforming notable portraits into fun and colorful graffiti paintings. One of his most famous renditions to date is his alteration of da Vinci’s Mona Lisa.

modern-day musician such as Prince or Lenny Kravitz would pay respect to deceased rock stars. One of Zapata’s hallmarks is his winking, playful homages to past masters, making him kind of an art world magician who rejuvenates the classics. His numerous punkish updates on the Mona Lisa are a case in point. “I think Mona Lisa is an amazing painting. It’s not only about Mona Lisa; it’s about researching the masters to try to bring that work contemporary, to see what happens when you use today’s technology and resources and let it happen. “It’s not the first time an artist has done this. I wasn’t trying to compare my work to anybody’s, just trying to make it contemporary and have some fun! I think everybody is entitled to have fun doing that. I’ve done a lot of experiments with Picasso’s work and Goya’s. It’s just that the Mona Lisa really stuck. I love the painting, I love what it represents, the composition, the history behind it. It

46 HUDSONMOD.com MAY/JUNE 2015

fascinates me. When I am in Paris I go visit her every day. I wake up, go to the Louvre and see Mona Lisa. I say, ‘Good morning’ and then I leave. As an artist it’s a core inspiration.” Zapata has also taken originals from Matisse and Picasso and put his own spin on their work. Has he ever received feedback from their families? “I don’t know the Matisse family, but I haven’t heard from anybody. I don’t work on things by living artists. Normally, if you are a nice guy, people are nice to you if what you do is not offensive. I’m not here to make statements about politics or the economy. Other people are better at that. I’m trying to make the world a little more beautiful for all of us. I don’t know about politics. I don’t know about many things, but I do know about painting. That is my passion.” His art experiments with beauty. “I’m obsessed with it. There is beauty in every corner. We go too fast in life, and we don’t realize happiness and beauty are not in the bigger picture but in the small details that happen every day. We just don’t pay attention. I think if everybody slowed down and paid attention, their lives would be happier and more beautiful.” This simple way of looking at life began for Zapata at an early age. His father was a contractor, so there was always paint in the house. “I come from a very humble background. My mom was a tailor and my dad was a painter—he painted cars—so we never starved, but I could not imagine I would have an opportunity to live a life like this.” When did he realize he had an interest and a natural talent? “I used to be invited to my friends’ houses back home in Mallorca to spend the weekend and then I’d end up painting everywhere—on the walls, the floor—and their moms were so pissed off they’d say, ‘We don’t want this kid back in our house!’ Now they say, ‘Will you come back?’” he notes with a chuckle. “I don’t think there is a single defining moment when you realize you’re an artist or you have talent or this or that. As long as you can do what you want and eventually people like what you do, well, then you are blessed. I can keep doing it. I just hope I don’t disappoint them and I do my best.” Fairly or unfairly, Zapata has been linked with Hollywood celebrities. His association with Lindsay Lohan has made him a selfdescribed “tabloid target,” with one Brit rag calling him “Lindsay Lohan’s Sugar Daddy.” He is friends with the star and lent her his Porsche. She had an accident, which brought out the paparazzi. They are not involved romantically, however. “I try to be as private as I can, but anybody doing anything today is a target of a tabloid. They don’t need an excuse. They don’t even need a real story. It’s a business that’s been going on for many years, and I stay out of it as much as I can. Everybody who is doing something is a target because we live in a world of content. There are 10 million blogs about gossip and gossip magazines, so anybody can be a part of it [laughs]. Does that have anything to do with my career? Zero. Are sales any better or worse? No, it doesn’t change anything, no good

and no bad. It doesn’t do anything.” To be sure, the artist’s life as personified by Zapata is not drudgery by any stretch, and it does involve glamorous women of the Hollywood variety. In late 2011, Zapata took Polaroids of Ms. Lohan and adorned the prints with his own graffitti, selling the images to a collector for $100,000. The work is part of his ongoing series “Ten” (consisting of ten iconic women of our time) for which Alexandra Richards, Michelle Rodriguez, Kim Kardashian and Sofia Vergara have also modeled. For Vergara’s portrait, Zapata daubed paint on the real-life woman in the buff and photographed the result. What, as they ask in Hollywood, is his motivation? “I want to represent what’s magic inside of these women, this art, when they walk into a room and the room stops. It’s a great experience to get to know them a little better than most people do. These girls are used to being filmed or photographed, but a painting is very intimate. When you are doing a portrait you spend a lot of hours and you get to go inside of them and find what makes them special.” Will he stop at ten? “I never want this project to end. Yes, we are going to call it ‘eternity’ [laughs] or ‘eTENity.’” When he discusses what inspires him as an artist, Zapata emphasizes the details of life, not the big picture. The best place for inspiration is his adopted city. “The streets of New York are the best museum,” he says. “New York is where I am. Where I live, I love. I was brought up in Mallorca, which is wonderful. I love my country, my people and my culture, and everything about it, but this is my life now. This has been my life for so many years, where I’ve had my kids, where I had an opportunity to become a painter. This is where I feel comfortable.” What inspires him about New York? “Everything! In a few blocks you can encounter anything or everything. It’s overwhelming in a way but also great. Just walking around with my dog can give me an idea. Basically, I love what happens to me on a daily basis. Like today, when I was being photographed [for this HudsonMOD story], I was thinking it would be good to do a series called Paparazzi and have a very pop-looking photographer in black and a lot of colors and flash—very pop. I was posing there and thinking, ‘Wow! That could look cool.’” Currently, he’s working on a gladiator sculpture for the newly restored Colosseum in Rome. “I love painting bullfighters. Gladiators are the bullfighters of yesteryear.” Also on his agenda are A Bullfighter in New York at the C24 Gallery in Chelsea, two excursions into the fashion world (an Alice + Olivia clothing collaboration that came out in April and a line of shoes with Superga scheduled for summer), “and I just finished my book The Beautiful Dream of Life that should be published by November.” Between all these things and trying to stay out of the tabloids, Domingo Zapata will be crazy-busy indeed.

I

POSSIBLY MY FAVORITE IS GINGHAM. Not just any gingham in little empire waists or A-line frocks, but gingham in the most unique silhouettes you could imagine. I was a huge fan of fall’s plaid trend, but seeing gorgeous sleek dresses, modern suits, tops and skirts in this incredible tiny check pattern inspires me. Not only are we witnessing the traditional tiny gingham, but designers are also doing a wonderfully modern take by using gingham fabrics with checks of all sizes for both men’s and women’s fashions. Wonderfully checked dress shirts, vests, ties and slacks are “in” for casual days. Be adventurous and try it in clothes you wouldn’t have thought would work in gingham. Maybe it’s a sleek gingham crop top with a long straight skirt and a statement belt styled with a great pair of heels. Take notice of how different designers are showcasing gingham ensembles and strive to emulate their vision as you put your spring wardrobe together. We’re also seeing the pattern in a wide variety of colors, so you’ll certainly find something that suits your taste and coordinates with clothes you already have. Another spring trend I’m excited about is yellow. We’re not talking about a subdued butter color, but the brightest, sunniest yellow imaginable. You saw a lot of yellow on the red carpets during awards season and you’ll see more at the Tony Awards in June. There is a shade that works for everyone. It’s just a matter of finding the right one and the right ensemble for your skin tone and hair color. Try on different shades to determine which is best for you. Yellow looks fantastic with gold jewelry and gold shoes. You can’t miss with this trend. Of my next trend, my clients say, “I’ve been wearing it for years.” It’s the shirt dress. I’m glad you’ve been wearing it for years, but

t took a little longer this year for the warm weather to arrive. I enjoy sitting by the fire on a snowy moonlit evening as much as the next image consultant, but I know I’m not alone in finding spring is rejuvenating. You see it in the fashion trends. This season we are in for some great looks sure to be on many people’s must-have lists.

(Opposite Page): Acne Studios’ dress follows not one trend but two: military green and enlarged pockets. (Left): This sheer dress from Balmain will keep any wearer cool and chic during warmer weather months. (Top): Altuzarra shows off colored gingham in their spring 2015 collection.

(Left): Lela Rose mixes gingham with another spring trend: blackand-white. (Top): Sonia Rykiel’s military green ensemble fully embraces the popular Pantone color. (Opposite Page): Kate Spade’s shirt dress will naturally accentuate all waistlines.

this is not your traditional shirt dress I’m talking about. This spring, the classic shirt dress is taking on a new wrinkle, pardon the pun. Imagine a long, open shirt dress that follows the shape of your curves, or one with a drop waist for something a little more whimsical, or a soft, silk shirt dress with a sexy side slit. I’m still a fan of taking a simple shirt dress and cinching it up with a great belt, but I’m also loving the risks designers are taking by reimagining this great classic. Another timeless trend we get to enjoy this spring is black and white. Fashion-wise, what could be more edifying than digging through your closet and finding that fantastic black-and-white color-blocked dress and pulling it out for this spring? Make a whole new outfit for yourself. Maybe it’s a great jacket or purse? Find the perfect black-and-white clutch or sandals to go with the black spring items you already have. It may be as simple as a chic black-andwhite print scarf or as bold as mixing and matching several blackand-white graphic patterns that look perfect on your silhouette. We’ve all been there. We find several pieces in different shapes that look great on us, but none of them matches perfectly. Hey, if they are all black-and-white, then they do match! Even better, this spring you’ll look like you bought it straight off the runway. The next trend is worth giving a second chance. Were you listening to all the style shows go on about Marc Jacobs and wondering how you’d look in some of his spring pieces? The trend here is military green. It’s astonishing how well military green brings out a person’s eye color. Those who know me are aware that I love shades that accentuate eye color. Wear something that makes people see you. The surprising thing about military green is it works with all different eye colors, brown as well as hazel and blue. Mix your army greens with khaki and white, and look for clean lines. Add natural and nude-colored accessories like sandals, which are big this season, and oversized bags. Pair this green with these muted colors and enjoy how easy it is to look great. The all-white trend is back once again. Seriously, how could we ever let it go away in the first place? You can always find ways to make an all-white ensemble new and fresh. One key is texture. Mix and match white fabrics of different textures and white-onwhite patterns. Think white jeans with a soft white linen shirt over a sexy white tank top. No one will question when you take that lovely, barely creamy white color crop jacket and pair it with your brightest and whitest skinny pants. How about that long white cotton short-sleeved linen trenchcoat worn open over a great pair of shorts and heeled sandals? I could go on forever about this white trend. Everyone looks good in white. Don’t listen to people who say otherwise. Perhaps you’ll want to hold a nice Savignon Blanc or sparkling Pellegrino water while wearing white, but wear white nonetheless. Whatever trend you choose, enjoy this spring that was so long in coming. If you love your clothes, you’ll relish the season even more.

N FORMULA ONE RACING, the pinnacle of motorsports, Mercedes-

Benz is the reigning world champion. Winning 16 of 19 races, the automaker dominated the 2014 season with superior technology, strong reliability and the most dominant power unit in the field. Inspired by this overwhelmingly positive track record, HudsonMOD sent me to Benzel-Busch’s Mercedes-Benz showroom in Englewood, New Jersey, to test how well Formula One success translates to the company’s street cars.

GLA 250 From the outside, the new GLA looks like a cross between a classic station wagon and the ubiquitous small SUV. But the M-B designers have distilled out the econo-box look and given the GLA 250 a lean, muscular stance no one could ever mistake for anything but a Mercedes. Yes, this is their smallest SUV, but don’t be fooled: there’s a surprising amount of room inside and plenty of power under the hood, which is where we’ll start.

TURBO POWER – At the core of every Mercedes-Benz is the motor. The world-beating performance of the Mercedes-Benz Formula One car was due largely to its innovative, turbo-charged higher power output. In the GLA 250 you find the same turbo technology, delivering 208 hp and, more importantly, 258 lb-ft of torque. For readers unfamiliar with the word, torque is what gives you that seat-of-the-pants rush when you have to accelerate onto a crowded highway. The GLA’s torque comes on at very low RPMs and remains consistent almost to redline. In our test drive, we powered onto the busy Palisades Interstate Parkway with four people aboard, crisply accelerated into our lane and were at cruising speed in about as much time as it took to read this sentence. Turbo charging delivers what engineers call volumetric efficiency, a small displacement engine for normal driving and superior fuel mileage providing more power for those times when it’s needed. Linked to a smooth-shifting 7-speed transmission, Mercedes-Benz says their GLA 250 will sprint to 60 mph in about 7 seconds and still deliver an EPA rating of 25/35 city/highway. It does all this while still earning an ultralow emissions certification. TAKE A SEAT – Inside, the GLA is no penalty box. To keep the base sticker price low, M-B delivers these SUVs with their MBTex upholstery as standard. This is a longwearing vinyl that I like. Leather seating is, of course, offered as an option. Comfort, however, is not optional. Even on the base model the seats are supportive, comfortable and adjustable to accommodate a wide range of driver preferences. The instrumentation is clear and simple with important gauges laid out logically and minor controls for wipers, lights, audio volume and cellphone, all reachable without having to take your hands off the thick, leather-wrapped steering wheel. I’m less in love with the look of the large freestanding digital display screen in the center of the dash, but it does the job well, communicating important systems information and other data selected from the central controller on the console. Passengers are treated to comfortable seats, an upright riding

60 HUDSONMOD.com MAY/JUNE 2015

position and ample leg, foot and knee room front and rear. In our test drive, my fellow passengers all commented on the high level of comfort. THE “U” IN UTILITY – The NYC metro area is a challenge for drivers. Crowded roads, snow in the winter and wet conditions in the other seasons all make reliable traction, handling and braking vital. The GLA comes standard with an all-wheel-drive system called 4Matic, so driving to work, school or the slopes in winter should be less of a challenge. M-B offers an off-road package to enhance further the GLA’s utility by adding adaptive shift points to the transmission programming, accelerator feedback and a downhill speed-regulation option to make off-roading safer and more controlled.

NUMBERS – Our test car started at a base of $33,330. The polar

silver metallic paint (stunning!) added $720. The 321 Sport Package includes 19-inch AMG wheels for $2,200. Heated front seats, a high-quality sound system, media interface, compass, garage-door openers, dual-zone climate control and auto-dimming mirrors are some of the desirable goodies in the P01 Premium Package. With several other options, our GLA 250 tops out at $43,575. Leather raises the price by $1,700. However, a less aggressive use of the options list still delivers a very nice GLA 250 for several thousand dollars under $40,000. If money isn’t a concern or power is your passion, the AMG version, starting at $48,300, boasts 0-60 times in less than 5 seconds and 355 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque, putting a capital “S” in SUV.

C300

Next up was the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Sedan. Advertisements for this new model claim the “C” stands for change. That’s because this year’s model is a completely revamped fifth generation of the automaker’s popular sedan. What’s the biggest change? How about 20 percent more oomph under the hood? MORE POWER – Thanks to technological changes, the C 300’s

standard engine, 2.0 liters like the GLA, boasts 240 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. Again, through the magic of volumetric efficiency, the EPA numbers on the C-Class are impressive, 25/34 city/highway. The C-Class wins the 0-60 sprint over the GLA 250 with a time of around 6 seconds. In our test, it felt peppier and merged nicely and without drama onto a crowded stretch of one of Bergen County’s busiest roadways. C IS FOR CLASSY – Inside the C-Class, you are presented with an interior that’s more luxurious and a step up from the fine interior of the GLA 250. My road test notes read: “Surprisingly big inside with seats that seem infinitely adjustable with three-position memory.” Impressive. That roomy feel comes from the 3-inch-longer wheelbase in the new car as compared to the previous C-Class. This elongated stance improves handling and ride comfort as well as adding some precious cabin space. Our test confirms it all works. While making a car bigger usually means adding unwanted bulk pounds that lower fuel mileage and performance, the C-Class’ extensive use of aluminum makes the body lighter and stronger. LESS IS MORE – While I’m not a student of architectural design, Bauhaus popped into my head as I gazed across a broad expanse of the dash and instrument cluster. It boasts a thoroughly modern concept: beauty in simplicity. Our test car has the black ash open pore wood accents option (a $325 add-on) that contrasts nicely with the brushed-aluminum trim on the vent surrounds, gauge bezels and the door/seat window controls. A small touchpad pedestal-like device on the center console is your interface to various systems and menus. Our time in the car was too brief to delve into its secrets, but I was told that BenzelBusch gives buyers lifetime access to their product concierge services so they can fully understand the car’s systems whenever they need it. The seating surfaces were, like the GLA 250, covered in MB-Tex. The more luxurious leather was part of a $2,300 extra cost that includes ventilation built into the seats, power front passenger

seating with memory, illuminated door sills and multi-colored ambient lighting.

positive feel and power more than adequate. Out test car came with 4Matic drive, well worth the $2,000 additional cost over the rearwheel-drive base model.

BEHIND THE WHEEL – The C-Class definitely has more get-

up-and-go than the GLA 250, and its handling is more adjustable through an “agility” switch on the center console. Clicking this curiously named chrome toggle allows the driver to select from a variety of driving modes that include ECO, comfort, sport and sport+. For the truly sophisticated driver, there is a mode that lets you tailor your C-Class to your own driving style. I noted that the handling was predictable yet sporty, the brakes secure with a

62 HUDSONMOD.com MAY/JUNE 2015

HIT THE HIP – Our 4Matic test C-Class tipped the scales at

$47,700. The very desirable $2,120 P01 Premium Package, with heated seats for $580 and a panoramic sunroof for $1,480, boosts the $40,400 base price. As with the GLA 250, careful ticking of the options list will allow you to come in at or even below $45,000 and still have a wonderful car.

Saving the best for last, we approached the beautiful S-Class with the appropriate reverence. This is one of the world’s finest vehicles. As evidence of its ability to please discriminating drivers, many of Formula One’s top participants have chosen S-Class MercedesBenzes as their personal cars. YOU GOT A PROBLEM WITH THAT? – Looking both inviting

and a little sinister, our test car was a Diamond White S-Class 550 Coupe sitting on 19-inch AMG wheels that were part of the $5,900 321 Sport Package. Popping open the hood, we saw a 4.7-liter, twin-turbo V8 rated at 449 hp and a tree-stump-pulling 516 lb-ft of torque. This combination powers the 4,707 lb S-Class to 60 in just 4.5 seconds, faster than a lot of sports and muscle cars. Despite all of that giddy-up-and-go, the S-Class manages a respectable 16/24 city/ highway EPA rating. HOLD ME CLOSE – Inside the cabin, the fit, finish and acres of fine

leather and wood welcome the driver to world-class luxury. Our representative from Benzel-Busch, Mr. Lamont Saunders, affirmed that the S-Class competes in the marketplace against top names like Bentley, but delivers that special “Mercedes-ness” that can be understood only after a test drive. Sitting in the deeply contoured bucket seats with their impeccable contrasting stitching and remarkable comfort, I began

to “get it.” Then, I fired up the throaty V8, and as its exhaust burbled softly, the picture got even clearer. We trundled through bumper-to-bumper Englewood traffic for several minutes until we were able to find a clear patch of road where we could let the S-Class 550 Coupe stretch its legs. Yowzah! As my racecar driver friend David Donohue always says, “There’s no replacement for displacement!” The bigger motor pinned me and my passengers to our seats and brought a smile to our faces. Yeah, it’s that good. QUALITY HAS ITS PRICE – As you can imagine, a remarkable vehicle like the S-Class 550 (like fine champagne, manufacturemovement timepieces and first-class air travel) has its price. Our S-Class Coupe 550 starts at a base of $119,900. Our test car has several desirable options. The 445 Warmth and Comfort Package that includes heated seats all around, heated door panels and a heated steering wheel (magic on a cold winter’s day), and the 321 Sport Package are two that bring the final tally to $135,810. Considering the high level of comfort, safety, performance and quality, it’s like a bargain. Thanks to the good folks at Benzel-Busch for their assistance in bringing these cars to our readers, with special thanks to Mr. Lamont Saunders, a talented gentleman who explained simply and concisely the complex systems built into today’s highly computerized cars.

IME AND AGAIN New Jersey’s Gold Coast has proven to be an exceptional— if not the top—contender for the most affluent stretch of land the Garden State has to offer homeowners. Hudson in one of the Gold Coast’s most prominent towns, Fort Lee, with The Modern—a brand-new real estate addition that raises the bar in luxurious amenities. Helping the 47-story structure stand out from Fort Lee’s horizon is the manner in which it reflects natural light from its all-glass façade. By installing enlarged windows in place of walls, The Modern captures incomparable Manhattan views. “With over 75,000- square- feet of extraordinary indoor and outdoor amenities, The Modern offers a five-star,

hotel-style experience. The Modern’s residents enjoy spectacular views, high-quality condominium finishes and unmatched services, all of which create a lifestyle like no other,” says Allen Goldman, President of SJP Residential Properties and developer of The Modern. Future residents can choose from studio, one-, two- or three-bedroom apartments, all equipped with efficient and stunning indoor fixtures. Besides floor-to-ceiling windows, all units contain Belgian whiteoak hardwood flooring, European cabinets,

Inside The Modern, residents will be able to enjoy multiple lounge areas, flat-screen TVs, golf simulators, pool tables and an all-encompassing fitness room filled with a pilates and yoga studio, weight room, spin bikes and more. That is why The Modern has established a new benchmark for luxury living in the metro New York region,” says Goldman. OSING A PET IS AGONIZING. Losing one

unexpectedly can feel unbearable. When Toni Ann Turco’s beloved dog Manchester was struck and killed by a vehicle, the pet’s sudden absence was extremely painful. Inspired by an irrepressible desire to help dogs avoid untimely deaths, Toni Ann Turco, along with Richard Errico and eight other volunteers, founded Home for Good Dog Rescue in 2010. To date, Home for Good Dog Rescue is responsible for saving nearly 3,500 dogs from high-kill shelters throughout South Carolina and Georgia. The nonprofit 501 (c)(3) organization is 100 percent foster-based, which means all dogs are fostered until adopted. Currently, Home for Good Dog Rescue is promoting their Almost Home campaign. All donations made to the organization go toward establishing a state-of-the-art wellness center for rescue dogs, allowing HFGDR to care for and save even more kill-shelter dogs. HudsonMOD had the pleasure of speaking with Richard Errico, cofounder and treasurer, giving readers an insider’s perspective of this extraordinary organization. Q: How did you and Toni Ann start the organization? A: She was the founder and guiding force. There were eight original members. She was the strength who made it all happen. The rest of us followed suit. We met in the city. We both worked for Bank of America in the compliance department. Unfortunately, all this good came from something terrible. One of her dogs got out of the house when she was doing a renovation and was hit by a car and killed. That’s what started it. Toni Ann and I both retired early to do this. We were trying to run the rescue and work full time and

I left. I tell people I had to make a decision and work got in the way. Work had to go. How has Home for Good Dog Rescue impacted your life? A: It’s changed my life completely. It’s a passion. It’s first and foremost in my life. When I get up in the morning, this is the first thing I think about. I look at my dog, who’s also a rescue. I rescued him about seven years ago when he was a year-and-a-half old. He had some behavioral issues and was an “owner surrender.” I can’t imagine my life without him now. He’s my best friend. We do everything together. All I think about now is the rescue. Q: How many dogs has Home for Good Dog Rescue saved? A: We’ve saved 3,500 dogs so far. I hope we can save another 5,000 in the next five years. We’ve averaged about 750-800 dogs a year. I would love to be able to save more lives. With the facility down in South Carolina we’re planning, hopefully that will come true. We will be able to take in a lot more dogs that normally we would pass on, dogs with medical issues that are really not serious, but shelters won’t spend the time or money to treat. If the dog is sick, they put it down. In fairness to them, they’re overcrowded, understaffed and underpaid. To them, it’s just a job. To us, it’s a passion. Q: People always say, “Rescue dogs are the ones that save us.” Is there a story from a pet adopter that stands out in your mind? A: A man named George and his family came to one of our adoption events. There was a group of puppies and older dogs, and the family was interested in a puppy. The dog they ended up with, Cubby, was lying in the crate very calmly and quietly, and they walked right past him. After a few minutes, the girls gravitated towards Cubby. They adopted him and he got so attached to the wife, Alice, that it was very strange. All of a sudden, she was diagnosed with terminal cancer. For the next six to eight weeks, the dog never left her side. Cubby made her last days much easier, much easier on the whole family. George tells us now, “This is the dog I didn’t want and now I can’t imagine my life without him.” I get choked up every time I think about it. How lucky he was and how lucky they were. How can people volunteer for your organization? A: If they go to our website www. homeforgooddogs.org, there’s a volunteer application to fill out. We have so many different opportunities for volunteering, depending on people’s expertise.
