Are You A Cyberchondriac? By Simon Murray

n today’s Wikiworld, information is being created, shared and absorbed in minutes— scratch that, seconds— across the Web at lightningfast speeds. Typically we know this to be a good thing: The Internet allows for unbridled communication and sharable knowledge on a massive scale. And the truth is the open nature of the Web has spurred education, connected business, toppled dictators. But a free-range medium accessible by the public can be both a gift and a curse. Especially when it comes to our health, where the unsupported decisions we make, if wrong, can lead to serious injury—or much worse. Americans are more health conscious than ever. Thanks in part to the technology at our fingertips we’re watching what we eat, tracking workouts, counting calories and generally leading a healthier lifestyle. On the Apple App Store, for example, there are more than 9,000 apps that pertain to health. Online, consumers with health care questions are using search engines that send them to WebMD, Mayo Clinic and Everyday Health. While some medical apps and websites are resources specifically for doctors and med school students, most are utilities intended to improve the wellbeing of the public at large.

What’s happening, however, is the opposite in some cases—and here’s the problem. Some of us are turning to our smartphones or the Web to answer our health-related questions—with all-too-frequent unhealthy results. “Cyberchondria” is a real condition affecting millions of Americans and you may have fallen victim yourself. Here’s an example: Type the phrase “stomach ache”—a common ailment with many different causes— into Google. Your query will be met with a barrage of answers, from the matronly “None of us likes an upset stomach,” to the grave “Abdominal pain is a common symptom associated with transient disorders or serious disease.” So which one describes what’s happening to you? Cyberchondria is a neologism that explains the growing phenomenon described by journalist Lois Rogers as “the deluded belief that you suffer from all the diseases featured on the Internet.” According to a 2008

study conducted by Microsoft researchers Ryen White and Eric Horvitz, self-diagnosing a symptom using a search engine has the potential to increase anxiety in those lacking proper medical education or training. In the study, 500 Microsoft employees were surveyed on their experiences in searching for health-related information on the Web and a whopping nine out of ten of those employees said that searching for basic medical information led to researching a more serious condition, even though none of the participants described any excessive health concerns at the onset of the study. The Internet is completely ingrained in our everyday lives, and this has a direct affect on the way we understand our bodies, interact with doctors and learn about treatments (see page 32). With sound judgment, there’s a wealth of medical information on the Web that can assist people in making smart, rational decisions when it comes to their health. But remember that nothing should substitute the care and guidance that you’ll receive from a medical professional. If you’re spending hours searching for health care advice online, it’s time to consult with a trusted physician. That’s always a knowledgeable resource you can trust.

ig things are happening to the healthcare system in this country. But you already knew that. Healthcare is an issue with farranging consequences whose effects can literally be seen at this point, with an impasse played out on the national stage. But as everyone knows by now, debating until one’s blue in the face won’t change the fact that health

will always be a personal issue, which, at the end of the day, comes down to two people: you and your physician. While public health policy is brought about by Congress—there is a different process happening right at this very moment, even in places such as your doctor’s office waiting room, that is changing the way we interact with healthcare professionals, family physicians

and hospitals. The 21st century is revolutionizing the doctor-patient relationship, with the future promising to evolve this important bond with the help of today’s innovative technology. In 1996, the Institute of Medicine, an independent, nonprofit organization established a committee with the goal of assessing and eventually improving the

nation’s healthcare system. In their findings, Crossing the Quality Chasm: A New Health System for the 21st Century (2001), the committee stressed a series of reforms that needed to happen at the very root of the system. Prophetically, the authors wrote, “Information technology, including the Internet, holds enormous potential for transforming the health care delivery system.” That change has come, and it’s influence is empowering individuals who are more likely to stay connected to their doctors and informed while making important decisions about their health. Before the Internet, accessing medical information was incredibly difficult, so patients had little choice but to accept the traditional doctorpatient relationship: Wherein the doctor called the shots, and it was up to the patient to follow the advised treatment. However now, according to the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project, one in three adults goes online to diagnose a medical condition they or someone else may have. It was only after research that half of those decided to follow up with a medical professional to discuss their potential condition. Aside from using the Internet to educate ourselves, we are also using technology to stay connected to physicians, who increasingly have shifted into the role of healthcare advisors. With this new patientcentered approach, patients are telling doctors their priorities and getting all the information they

And staying informed is easy, thanks to doctors offices that are communicating through text, email and conducting appointments via Skype and other video messaging services. or five days in August, the LIBERTY NATIONAL GOLF COURSE in Jersey City played host to The Barclays, a tournament exclusively open to the top PGA ranked golfers as the first event of the FedExCup playoffs. With a mile-long waterfront view along the Hudson River that includes the Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty on many of its approach shots, Liberty National is a stunning example of how New Jersey is not so subtly differentiating itself from the golf courses of other states. While the rest of the golf world might just be waking up to the resplendent greens across the Garden State, don’t be the last person you know to experience one of these fine courses. Many of which, not surprisingly, may be a lot closer than you think. Golf in New Jersey would be lacking in its impressive modern day credentials if a Philadelphian by the name of George Arthur Crump had never hunted in the thickets of Camden County. In response to the growing inadequacy of Philadelphia’s golf courses, Crump and a group of amateur golfers established the PINE VALLEY GOLF CLUB in 1913, amidst more than 184 acres of scrub and sandy soil in southern New Jersey’s pine barrens. Oddly, it would be Crump’s first and last attempt at designing a golf course. The ingenious design principles that Crump introduced remains the lasting legacy of Pine Valley—to this day considered one of the most challenging golf courses

ever created, consistently ranked by Golf Magazine as the top course in the world. Because the board of directors must invite new members to join, playing even a round at Pine Valley is often considered any golfer’s unattainable dream. Consider going on the final round of The Crump Cup, when the public is allowed to view tournament play and tour the course. While Pine Valley Golf Club is the most respected private course of all time, BALLYOWEN GOLF CLUB in Hamburg is considered one of the best public courses in the nation. Crystal Springs Golf Resort, which features an impressive seven courses of varying difficulty, architecture and landscapes, is where Ballyowen Golf Club has placed its pins. Inspired by the Celtic designs of the world’s first golf courses, renowned golf architect Roger Rulewich decorated his course with gently rolling hills and fairways that are nearly devoid of trees. Even the sparse buildings, which include a windmill and the clubhouse, are also built of dark brick and wood that immediately conjure images of Ireland. Ballyowen Golf Club might not be as famous as Pine Valley, but its beauty and accessibility make it a must play for any true golf lover. Unlike Crystal Springs Golf Resort, Golf Digest has named KNOLL GOLF CLUB the No. 1 municipal golf course in New Jersey. The 360-acre club is located in the woodlands of Parsippany and has both a

Knoll East and a Knoll West course. As a par 70 course at 6,752 yards from the blue tees, Knoll West keeps the length of a traditional course while taking two strokes from the average par of 72. These two factors make this bunker-filled and wooded course extremely challenging. UPPER MONTCLAIR COUNTRY CLUB in Clifton is another northern New Jersey course that demands attention. The club features a 27-hole championship course that has hosted tournaments for all three professional golf associations. Designed in the early 20th Century, Upper Montclair Country Club only consisted of five holes before more land was acquired in the 1920s. Designer A.W. Tillinghast was the mastermind behind the small lush fairways and dense foliage—both professionals and amateurs respect this unforgiving course. Along with Ballyowen, Upper Montclair Country Club, Knoll Golf Club and Pine Valley, New Jersey is home to TRUMP NATIONAL GOLF CLUB in Bedminster as well as the famous ARCHITECT’S GOLF CLUB in Lopatcong and many, many more. California and Florida generally receive all of the praise as the best golf destinations in the country, but this appears to be a product of their relatively stable weather conditions— Pebble Beach Golf Links and TPC Sawgrass are spectacles in their own right, but New Jersey’s impressive array of courses may just out drive them on any given day.
