identified, many spinal disorders can be treated by nonsurgical methods, such as exercises to relieve pressure on spinal nerves, physical therapy, medication and spinal injections. “The human spine has a remarkable ability to heal when proper treatments are applied,” says Mitchell Reiter, MD, the current president of the New Jersey Orthopaedic Society. For some, however, surgery is the most reasonable treatment option. “Spinal surgery — or any surgery for that matter — should not be taken lightly and should only be considered after noninvasive therapies have been exhausted,” says Mark R. Drzala, MD. The good news is that in addition to traditional procedures, there are new, state-of-the-art, minimally invasive techniques for treating a variety of spinal problems. While using the latest techniques whenever appropriate, Drs. Drzala and Reiter strike a balance between adopting newly introduced technologies while always ensuring that there is enough supporting data from reputable scientific studies demonstrating a procedure’s safety and effectiveness. That being said, the New Jersey Spine Specialists are at the forefront of their profession. The perfect example of their commitment to

excellence is the cervical disk replacement procedure. Traditional treatment for a cervical disc herniation that is causing pressure on a person’s spinal cord or nerve roots frequently involved a spinal fusion surgery which forces two bones to grow together. A cervical fusion results in a permanent loss of motion in the neck and places additional stress on a person’s remaining discs. Cervical disc replacement is an FDA-approved procedure that preserves motion in the cervical spine and has been shown to be an effective alternative to cervical fusion. While Drs. Reiter and Drzala waited until high-level data was available showing the safety and effectiveness of cervical disc replacement, there are few surgeons in the region with as much experience as The New Jersey Spine Specialists with this technique. “Cervical disc replacement preserves motion while avoiding many of the downsides of cervical fusion surgery including the need to use cadaver bone grafts, plates and screws, as well as the risk of the fusion not healing,” says Dr. Reiter. Dr. Drzala says that what really sets them apart is their passion for what they do and the extra mile they go to get the job done. “Chronic pain is a serious problem and you

Big! From Doctor to Patient to Doctor, TLC Star, Dr. Jennifer Arnold, Has Developed a Unique Insight by Being on Both Sides of the Dr.-Patient Relationship

r. Jennifer Arnold, a pediatrician and neonatologist physician, couldn’t wait to start a family of her own with her husband and best friend, Bill Klein. Co-star of TLC’s hit reality show The Little Couple, Arnold was not able to have children of her own due to her achondroplasia, or dwarfism, so Arnold and Klein decided to adopt. While in India adopting her soon-to-

be-daughter, Zoey, Arnold became ill and had to rush back on a 20hour, heart wrenching and anxietyfilled plane ride to America, leaving her husband and son, Will, behind to complete the adoption process. After undergoing numerous tests, she found out what she thought at first to be food poisoning was actually cancer. Focusing her energy on bonding with her new daughter and

embracing the first memories with her now complete family was put on hold when this doctor found herself on the other side of the needle in December 2013. Arnold has been doing big things her whole life. In this past year alone she’s celebrated her 40th birthday, renewed her wedding vows with her loving husband, and adopted a rambunctious son from China and a precious daughter from India. And that’s just her personal life. Her professional life, which has been quite the inspiring medical journey, is equally as exciting and full of “big things.” From endur-

ing many orthopedic surgeries, to studying medicine to practicing neonatology and helping run a simulation center — Arnold is pretty much unstoppable. Discovering she had a rapidly growing, cancerous tumor in her uterus did not slow her down either. After all, she’s used to adapting her environment to satisfy her needs — she’s been doing it her whole life. With her family by her side throughout the chemotherapy treatment process, as well as TLC’s cameras, Dr. Arnold, who had to take on the role of patient for a change, fought the brave battle against

cancer and is in remission. Now she is taking her motto of “Think Big” to new levels by inspiring other new mothers, intelligent doctors, resilient cancer survivors and determined little people to face whatever life throws at them, starting with a big infectious smile. Dr. Arnold had already experienced the difficult and draining process of being a patient many times when she was younger but now she’s viewing her own cancer recovery from a more medical standpoint. With a medical degree from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, a Pediatric Residency Program

JENNIFER ARNOLD: Doctor, Patient, Parent at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and a current position as a physician in the neonatal intensive care unit as well as medical director of the new pediatric simulation center at Texas Children’s Hospital — you could understand if Arnold was a bit of a backseat doctor, so to speak. To the contrary she seems fairly calm and optimistic and certainly open about this overwhelming time in her life. In fact so much so that she allowed cameras to show her actually receiving Chemotherapy and baring her bald head. Perhaps her openness and modest confidence results from getting attention her whole life — she’s definitely learned you don’t have to be big to stand out. Arnold is used to taking care of everyone else, and just like many mothers and doctors, she may have forgotten what it’s like to take care of herself. She really has had a full-circle experience of everything medical from, first and foremost, her position as a doctor to being a patient, which is what initially inspired her to get involved in medicine, as well as being a parent observing, worrying and asking many questions when her children went through surgeries. No wonder she’s so focused on spreading the word about the importance of simulation centers in hospitals where doctors and nurses can train as a team in a safe environment before encountering real high-risk situations. Arnold clearly wants not only big things for herself but also hospitals, patients and the whole medical world as well.

Avoiding Financial Surprises by Ty Sawyer

e’ve all had unexpected surprises in our financial lives, little bills and charges that seem to come from nowhere. Or, an unforeseen event that rears its ugly head and demands money such as a car breaking down, a water pipe bursting or a tree falling on your house. Being unexpected, these costs always arrive at the worst possible time. Of all these kinds of bills, medical expenses can be the most devastating and costly. While all medical treatment can’t be planned, there are lots of ways you can avoid getting the shock of a large, unpleasant and unanticipated medical bill with just a few small steps.

UNDERSTAND YOUR PLAN There are so many health plans and types of medical insurance coverage out there today; it can be dizzying. You should understand the basics without being afraid to ask questions. What is your deductible? This is always a big surprise for people with low-cost medical insurance. For anything other than a routine office visit to your primary physician, you might have a set amount of money that you have to pay to cover your deductible. This would be for any non-routine treatments, including such things as allergy shots, MRI, or specialty doctor visits. Always find out what is and what’s not covered when you determine your plan. It’s always best to call one of the insurer’s specialists; it’s their job to know.

STAY IN NETWORK FOR TREATMENTS If you’re using some form of medical insurance, with a quick phone call, it’s easy to determine if the doctors who will be treating you are part of your insurer’s network. Your primary physician should be aware of the in-network when they recommend a specialist for treatment or surgery, though mistakes can still be made. As a result, always make sure the treatment and doctor are covered under your insurance. Still, be aware: If the procedure or treatment is complicated, there may be some out-of-network doctors participating (especially for a surgery), so ask to make sure everyone from the surgeon to the anesthesiologist is part of your network. If not, ask that they use one that is part of the network, if possible. This way you avoid what is called balance billing. ASK FOR PROJECTED COSTS If you’re going in for a treatment that is planned, such as childbirth, many times you’ll be able to get a closecost estimate, as long as unforeseen

complications don’t arise. But, if you need treatment out of your insurance company’s network of providers, this is where you’re going to need to exercise caution and ask a few questions. Call the doctor’s office and get a projection on the costs of any treatment, surgeries, or other procedures you’ll be getting. There are also a few websites associated with some health care providers that can generate outof-pocket expenses. ALWAYS ASK FOR AN ITEMIZED BILL With people coming in and out from appointments, doctors’ offices are often hectic and cluttered. Whether you like it or not, mistakes will happen. Comb through the itemized bill and make sure there aren’t procedures included that you didn’t receive. If you don’t understand the bill, call the hospital and have them clarify. UNDERSTANDING “PREVENTATIVE CARE” “Preventative Care” is a service health plans considered normal and routine. These vary widely. Find out if physicals, mammograms and normal age related procedures, like colonoscopies, are covered. Get a list of preventive care items from your provider. A TEAM ON YOUR SIDE If you’re hit with big bills and need a little help, there are plenty of advocates to turn to: Patientadvocate.org, claims.org, hospitalbillreview.com and Families USA, among others.

hen anticipating an overnight at the hospital, it’s normal to miss the familiarity of your home and the things that fill it. Whether it’s one night, or an extended period of time, knowing your belongings are nearby — from your handmade blanket to your favorite foods and book — play a role in calming your nerves and making your stay easier. Of course, your room can only hold so much stuff, and your personal bag will depend upon the reason for the visit. The next time you pack, don’t forget these 10 essential items that will wipe away the boredom — or anxiety — of any hospital stay.

by Ty Sawyer The Bag. Sounds a little obvious, but if you get a overnight bag dedicated for the big day, you’ll not only remember it, but will also feel a sense of independence in knowing you’re prepared when taking care of yourself.

Bathroom Kit. Bringing the items that make up your normal daily routine such as a toothbrush, face products and lotions will certainly make you feel clean but can also help you adapt to your new surroundings as the scents remind you of home. Tip: Carry lip balm to relieve the dryness of your lips due to medications.

Fuzzy Slippers. Who cares that you’re walking around in your gown with your backside open? Your feet, comfily placed in a terry-cloth or velour cocoon, will stay warm from the icy, hospital floor. Tips for the hygienically-conscious: Bring a throwaway pair to dispose when you return home.

Stretchy pants. If you’re getting any incision near the waist or giving birth, comfortable pants make all the difference. And if you’re a woman, stretch pants will go with almost any hospital attire.

Reward treats. What surgery? It’s amazing how uplifting your spirits can get with a piece of candy. Tip: Bring an assorted party mix and share the love with the nursing staff and your fellow patients.

Music. Hospitals aren’t set up to keep you entertained. Put together a “Recovery Playlist” on your iPod with some of your favorite artists. Tip: Create both a soothing sleep playlist and a pumped up, pre-surgery playlist to get you relaxed and ready to go. Pajamas. The comfort and looseness of pajamas are the key to any hospital sleepover. Pick a special pair with a fun pattern that shows a little of your personality!

Money. Someone has to pay for the special delivery from your favorite restaurant, or a visit to the hospital gift store (though if you follow this list, you probably won’t need to go). Change is important, too, for vending machine needs.

Entertainment essentials. Watching that heartbeat monitor will grow old after a few minutes, so laptops or tablets, magazines (like Healthy Living), even a journal will keep your mind from turning to mush. Tip: If you have a smartphone, download free games from the app store and watch your four-walled hospital room disappear.

Plugs and chargers. Almost everything we have today requires charging or being plugged in, especially if you plan on bringing those entertainment items we suggested above. Head over to Home Depot and purchase a beefy power strip with 10 slots, and never lose that connection.
