Letter From the Director’s Chair by Cristina Mendez
W
hen I was a child, I remember how liberating the summer felt. No school, playing outside and a later bedtime were all part of the summer vacation experience. The only problem was it went by too fast, and then I found myself in the midst of new school-year preparations, which included going to the pediatrician for my annual physical and vaccines. Ouch! I remember one year, I was 7 or 13 (the years have become a little fuzzy), I tried to sneak out of the pediatrician’s office. It wasn’t planned, I was caught, and of course I still received my vaccinations, which is what made me (and what makes most children) terrified of these visits. Maybe it was the fear of the anticipation, but I always knew the end of the summer meant vaccine season. I worried about it as the days ticked away. Other summers I remember as medical whirlwinds. They include the year my brother needed hand surgery after helping my father build a treehouse and when I cut my foot at the beach. I had to have a pretty painful procedure to remove all the sand and then have it stitched up. I also remember the years plagued with one medical crisis after the other: the summer all of my grandparents were diagnosed with cancer or had strokes, or the one I spent mostly in a hospital bed due to a complicated pregnancy. When I look back at these summers, however, I don’t remember the pain and fear so much. I remember the strength and determination to continue or the funny, “How did it happen?” While these summers were clearly worse than the ones where I ended up having to get only vaccinations, there was no anticipation of a crisis; it just landed in our laps. Maybe we have these little crises in our lives to teach us something. Maybe they teach us to enjoy the people we love in our lives because you never know what will happen, or to take better care of ourselves, or to plan an escape route that will actually work. Regardless of what we take from it, always remember…
“Something good comes out of every crisis.” — Dave Pelzer Whether you need help planning ahead for those routine visits or need assistance finding a doctor during a medical crisis, NJ Top Docs is here.

e all know it’s easy to get sidetracked and let life get in the way, but we can’t let our health go. That’s why NJ Top Docs (a Division of USA Top Docs) has taken on the meticulous task of finding top doctors and surgeons. Our goal is to give patients the utmost confidence and ease in their search for a provider. Everyone wants to know more about the doctor they are considering. While personal recommendations are certainly valuable, most people want to know about a doctor’s credentials and experience before scheduling an appointment. When doctors apply to NJ Top Docs, they are put through a rigorous review process in which they must meet certain criteria to be approved as an “NJ Top Doc.” Some of the criteria are: having been in practice for a number of years, verification of licenses and credentials, board certification confirmation, and satisfactory patient reviews. We place an extraordinary high value on our selection process. Only the best doctors who are proven experts in their fields are approved. Peruse the following pages to get better acquainted with our NJ Top Docs and feel free to browse our extensive assembly of approved New Jersey providers featured in over 120 specialties online at www.NJTopDocs.com. We are constantly reviewing physicians, so please check back often to see who’s new!

“
am part of an elite group of orthopedic surgeons, and we pride ourselves on our ability to provide outstanding and innovative care in a friendly, family-like environment,” says Dr. Robert A. Kayal, founder and president of the Kayal Orthopaedic Center in Franklin Lakes, NJ. Dr. Kayal, who has been serving orthopedic patients from the Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Morris and Passaic counties since 1999, began his medical career at Pennsylvania State University, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree of science in pre-medicine. Afterward, he went on to obtain his medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-New Jersey Medical School and fulfilled five years of orthopedic surgery training in New York. Dr. Kayal is a member on some of the most prestigious medical boards in the country, including Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Diplomat American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Alpha Omega Alpha National Medical Honor Society, Sigmi Xi: The Scientific Research Society and the Director of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery: Patient Care Associates, LLC. The Kayal Orthopaedic Center also has numerous hospital privileges. The Valley Hospital, The Hackensack University Medical Center, Main & Pascack Valley Campuses, Chilton Medical Center, Patient Care Associates and Christian Health Care Center are among them. When patients pay Dr. Kayal a visit, they can be assured of receiving the best orthopedic treatment plan for their specific condition. “When patients come to Kayal Orthopaedic Center, they can be certain that they’re in the hands of an experienced surgical team that’s focused on their unique needs,” says Dr. Kayal. “My practice also has an administrative support

staff dedicated to patient satisfaction and coordination of care. We want our patients to know that we take their treatment very seriously.” Ultrasounds, bone densitometry, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) testing and digital x-ray technology are all diagnostic tools employed daily by Dr. Kayal and his highly trained staff. While medical tools are always being updated, Dr. Kayal manages to stay abreast of technologies that will greatly benefit his patients.
We lead the industry with our sophisticated approach to minimally invasive orthopedic care. “There is a technique called personalized patient specific total knee replacement surgery for fully customized knee replacements,” says Dr. Kayal. “This technique with an MRI image and preoperative planning tools allows us to create a three-dimensional model of the patient’s knee. This gives us an accurate depiction of the knee’s anatomy prior to surgery, and the model we create becomes a precise surgical tool to guide bone cutting, joint alignment, pin insertion and custom instrumentation.” But that’s not all. Dr. Kayal also offers three-dimensional blueprinting, which can create custom knee joints. The Kayal Orthopaedic Center is currently one of the only orthopedic practices in the United States that is utilizing this device. “Because no two knees are the same,” explains Dr. Kayal, “this technique allows us to predesign the ideal knee for a person (from the shape of their joint to its incision points), creating something that fits a
person perfectly and gives them a new lease on life.” With this piece of stateof-the-art technology, Dr. Kayal is able to help patients recover more promptly and efficiently. Dr. Kayal’s practice specializes in numerous orthopedic services, including neck and back pain, herniated discs, SLAP lesions, bicep injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, meniscus tears, ACL tears, various sports injuries, complicated foot disorders, hip cam and pincer lesions and much more. The degree to which Dr. Kayal cares about his patients is reflected in the technology with which he outfits his office and by his friendly and nurturing staff. “I am extremely thorough when discussing my techniques and procedures,” he says. “My patients are given a great deal of information pertaining to their condition and other treatment options. I also use educational videos, computer animation and other imaging to better educate my patients on their condition or upcoming surgery until they are both knowledgeable and comfortable with their plan of care.” He also offers patients superior amenities to make them feel at home during visits: education pamphlets about various procedures, TVs, therapeutic music throughout the office, and patient care specialists who keep track of all scheduled appointments to ensure patients are receiving prompt care. “We value patients’ time, so everything from same-day appointments to eliminating long waits and accommodating special requests and preferences is a priority at Kayal Orthopaedic Center, PC. Simply put, we put great emphasis on creating a pleasant patient experience,” says Dr. Kayal, who adds he’s most passionate about “developing strong relationships with people and changing their lives by restoring their quality of life.”

r. David L. Abramson has been practicing plastic surgery in Manhattan and New Jersey for two decades. Although those years of experience already set him apart from many plastic surgeons in the region, what really distinguishes his practice are the individualized attention he gives to patients and his availability. Both are as much a part of his professional ethic now as they were 20 years ago. Just as important is making patients feel at ease during office visits. “Along with providing them with the best possible care, we want patients to be comfortable,” Dr. Abramson says. “To make them feel at-home during office visits, we offer procedural videos to watch prior to seeing the physician. This allows them to understand procedures and formulate questions without feeling rushed. Each patient has different needs, and we strive to meet all of them.”
Helping him achieve this goal is a passionate staff that guides patients through every step of the process. Like him, they understand that personal appearance is not just a look, but a feeling you have about yourself. “Plastic surgery can not only change your appearance, but also boost your selfconfidence and help you feel as young as you look,” says Dr. Abramson. “Whether you want to reshape your nose or breasts, smooth wrinkles and tighten sagging skin, remove excess fat or correct a problem resulting from surgery, birth defects or the effects of aging, the wide array of procedures available at our offices can help you achieve the appearance you desire.” His commitment to excellence and patient care can be viewed in the beforeand-after photo gallery on his website. The photographs encompass everything from body contouring, liposuction and tummy tucks to breast augmentation, reduction and reconstruction, as well as facial surgery, lip augmentation and rhinoplasty. Among the newer procedures he offers are the CoolSmooth applicator, an FDAcleared nonsurgical solution clinically proven and designed for fat reduction of the outer thigh. Most patients notice a difference in as little as eight weeks.

Massoud of OASIS Orthopedic and Spine Integrated Services in Glen Rock, NJ. Dr. Massoud, who has been practicing for 16 years following his Fellowship at Texas Back Institute, founded OASIS in 2015 because he wanted to create a more welcoming, comprehensive patient experience from initial contact through recovery. “It’s important to listen carefully to the patient as well as review their symptoms and diagnostic reports to provide the most accurate diagnosis and treatment plan that will produce the best outcome,” Dr. Massoud notes. At the same time, OASIS recognizes the need for physicians to have extensive training in a broad array of treatments so they aren’t limiting patients’ options. The center takes pride in exploring and advancing new treatment options that reduce pain and improve recovery times. Dr. Massoud himself pursued extensive training in the U.S. and abroad and was one of the first surgeons in the Northeast to perform endoscopic spine surgery, which recently has gained wide acceptance. He also works closely with the leading physicians in stem cell therapy to administer and track results of this promising treatment option. The emotional aspects of a patient’s
condition are as important as the physical ones. “I am passionate about helping patients understand the role their mindset has in their pain and overall health,” notes Dr. Massoud. “We are very dedicated to providing the most advanced conservative and surgical treatment options, but we know that stress and emotions can trigger physical conditions, slow recovery and impact overall health. Therefore, we take time to discuss these triggers with patients and educate them on how to build healthy bodies and minds.” As the name suggests, OASIS has a welcoming, spa-like atmosphere conducive to making patients feel comfortable. The calming natural décor featuring lush plants and nature scenes is complemented by soothing greens and blues and a flowing water wall. Free coffee, tea, water and hot cocoa are offered, and the friendly reception staff is integrated into the lobby rather than tucked behind glass windows.

In August, the Breslow Center expanded to incorporate dermatological services, and new technologies such as CoolSculpting for noninvasive body contouring and miraDry to eliminate underarm sweating. “I am passionate about listening to patients, recognizing their expectations and delivering the result they are expecting,” says Dr. Breslow. “There is nothing more satisfying than a patient who is over-the-top thrilled about their result and their experience with us.” THE BRESLOW CENTER FOR PLASTIC SURGERY MAIN ADDRESS

r. Rachana Kulkarni’s focus at Medicor Cardiology in Hillsborough, NJ, is preventive cardiology. Here, the patientdoctor relationship is viewed as a special partnership. By working together, patient and doctor can strive toward keeping the heart healthy. “When I see my patients, I make sure they have my complete attention and I listen to their concerns,” says Dr. Kulkarni. “I want them to feel that their doctor’s attention is focused on them and not on a computer screen.” This attentive care carries over to the staff that has been with the center for years. Dr. Kulkarni favors a noninvasive pathway in treating patients. In line with that philosophy, she uses various noninvasive diagnostic modalities such as echocardiography, stress testing and nuclear imaging, and coronary CT angiography. “I feel we should use all the noninvasive tools before we go into the realm of invasive treatment,” says Dr. Kulkarni. “When I treat my patients, my measure of success is if I can save them from having a heart attack and the extent to which I can help them maintain and improve their heart health.”

INFERTILITY & REPRODUCTIVE MEDICINE
Jane E. Miller, MD

r. Jane E. Miller created North Hudson IVF twenty years ago as a complete private IVF center in Englewood Cliffs. The biggest obstacles she faces today are insurance dictates (“which have nothing to do with patient care,” she points out) and the high cost of fertility medications. Whatever the challenge, she says, “we want to make patients feel our practice is the right fit for them.” Part of this “right fit” philosophy are the unrushed visits. “We take as long as the patient needs. Once our job is done, most of our patients tell us that they don’t want to leave us! After the inital consult, a series of tests that includes bloodwork, imaging studies and evaluation of the male partner (if appropriate) with semen analysis is scheduled. Other diagnostic tools include surgeries and hormonal therapies that are individualized.” Dr. Miller continues, “We are a state-of-the-art IVF facility where patients benefit from the latest proven technological advancements in the field of reproductive medicine, but we do our work in an oldfashioned private-office setting. We are not a fertility factory.”

ver the past four years, Dr. Kenneth D. Nahum and other doctors working at Regional Cancer Care Associates have been providing patients with top-of-the-line care at various locations throughout New Jersey. Dr. Nahum, who practices out of the Howell division, has 27 years of extensive experience in his field of work. He uses state-of-the-art oncological care and clinical medicines to assess, treat and help patients. “I treat my patients as family members,” says Dr. Nahum. “I go the extra mile for them.” Although the toughest challenge he faces is working with patients who have limited treatment options, he points out that Regional Cancer Care Associates gives patients access to clinical-trial options other practices don’t offer. Explore and learn about some of the world’s most amazing (and misunderstood) animals with an educational wolf watch tour by owners Jim Stein and Becky Mace. This is the only spot in New Jersey where you can see wolves up close in their natural habitat. Although you can take a shuttle bus from the parking lot to the preserve, we recommend the invigorating scenic half-mile nature walk. In the secure observation area, you’ll be surrounded by four different packs of wolves. Stein and Mace dispel the awful myths of these magnificent creatures while teaching you about their eating habits, social structure and interaction with man. Also on the preserve are fox and bobcats. You can take photos to your heart’s content.
MICKS PINE BARRENS CANOE AND KAYAK RENTAL 3107 Route 563 Chatsworth, NJ www.mickscanoerental.com (609) 726-1515 A little farther to the south, but worth the trip, are the New Jersey Pinelands and Wharton State Forest, one of the Garden State’s most pristine biospheres. Take a kayak or canoe ride through the gentle waterways enjoying views of the forest, that wonderful pine scent and glimpses of wildlife. Go slow or fast: you decide how rigorously you want to paddle. There are lots of hiking trails, too. When you’re all tuckered out, spend the night close to nature at one of the many campsites or at Isaac Hilliard House, an award-winning bed and breakfast in nearby Pemberton. Here’s a little known fact: Chatsworth, NJ, is the cranberry capital of the world. You might even stumble upon an Ocean Spray juice factory, the only thing modern about this luscious, rustic getaway.

with and without BPH found that those who regularly ate garlic had significantly less incidence of BPH than those who did not. ONIONS: The same Italian study showed that men who ate onions as well as garlic were even less prone to having BPH. YOGURT: The probiotic acidophilus, also known as lactobacillus acidophilus, is derived from fermented dairy products such as yogurt. Although it lives in your intestine, these bacteria also help keep your prostate healthy.
EAT YOUR WAY TO A HEALTHY PROSTATE
SALMON: Along with helping to build healthy cell membranes throughout your body, omega-3 fatty acids may curtail your risk of BPH. Salmon is loaded with these “good fats.” Also try walnuts, kidney beans or a supplement. How important are omega3s not only to prostate health but also to overall health? A study by the Harvard School of Public Health found that 100,000 Americans die every year from too few omega-3s in their diets.
By Michael Banka
B
enign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or an enlarged prostate, affects half of men over the age of 60. The primary symptom is impeded urinary flow. Although age plays a major factor in prostate enlargement (by the age of 85, more than 95 percent of men have BPH), there is evidence to suggest that men can lower their risk by including certain foods in their diet. TOMATOES: Tomatoes contain lycopene, a powerful antioxidant that lowers the blood level of a protein called antigen that has been traced to BPH. The redder the tomato the higher the lycopene content. In tomato products such as ketchup and tomato sauce, the antioxidant is more potent than in fresh tomatoes because it is more easily absorbed. Lycopene is also found in other red foods such as watermelon and is a common ingredient in multi-vitamins formulated for men aged 50+.
BELL PEPPERS: Vitamin C from vegetables (but not fruits) reduces your risk of an enlarged prostate, and raw bell peppers contain more vitamin C than any other vegetable. One cup contains almost two times your recommended daily allowance (RDA). Brussels sprouts, cabbage and broccoli also are high in BPH-fighting vitamin C. GARLIC: Allicin, a potent antioxidant, is released when garlic cloves are cut or crushed. An Italian study of 2,800 men
SAW PALMETTO: There is a lot of disagreement about the benefits of extract from saw palmetto berries in combating BPH. Some men swear by it. A member of my family, using it in place of Flomax, said he got better results and without the side effects. While some studies have been inconclusive, other research shows that saw palmetto blocks the formation of the DHT hormone responsible for prostate growth. AVOCADOS: Because it grows in pairs with one side hanging lower than the other, the avocado is called the testicle plant. Perhaps another reason for the nickname is it contains a healthy fat (identical to the one in saw palmetto) that decreases the risk of BPH. SESAME SEEDS AND PUMPKIN SEEDS: They’re high in zinc, a mineral indispensable to a healthy prostate. Studies show that men with BPH have much lower levels of zinc in their bodies. If you’re not a seed eater, almonds are a good source, too.

Weighing In On Childhood Obesity STEPPING ON THE SCALE
It used to be that kids would come home after school, dump their backpacks and make a beeline for the door to play outside with the other neighborhood children. They would play until it was dinnertime or the streetlights came on, whichever came first. Today’s youth is less excited about a kickball game outside with peers and more captivated by their mobile devices and electronics. With it being 2015, and electronic devices being interactive and offering many different social outlets, it’s not hard to believe that someone could unknowingly spend nearly an entire day tucked away from the outside world and brushed up against an electrical outlet. While technology is not the only perpetrator, it is certainly a major factor in the fact that childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents
34
Healthy Living • 2015
in the past 30 years. What is even more alarming is the health effects of childhood obesity.
AS THE NUMBERS RISE
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has stated that children between the ages of 6 and 11 in the United States who were considered obese increased from 7 percent in 1980 to just about 18 percent in 2012. The percentage of adolescents from 12-19 years of age who were obese increased from 5 percent to 21 percent in the same period. In 2012, more than a third of children and adolescents were overweight or obese. In a population-based sample of 5 to 17-year-olds, 70 percent of obese youth had at least one risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Prediabetes is another potential
prostate as well as multiple myeloma and Hodgkin’s lymphoma. There are plenty of issues triggered by obesity.
KEEPING THE WEIGHT OFF
Though New Jersey has yet to sign on, many states have started putting laws in place requiring schools to dedicate a number of minutes to a physical activity during the school day. New Jersey has, however, put the “Complete Streets” policy in place. This encourages physical activity and green transportation including biking, walking and fuel-efficient vehicles. All but two U.S. states require schools to provide health education to their students in an effort to improve health literacy. Rather than having kids put aside the tablets, phones and game consoles, why not incorporate them into the conversation about childhood obesity? There are apps for everything these days, and weight loss is a category that has not been overlooked. For example, Kurbo is an app featuring health coaching and mobile weight loss geared towards children, which offers weekly live coaching and keeps kids motivated and accountable throughout their week. Daily text messages from the app also remind the kids to make the best choices that day. Another perk to the app is the 24/7 support system that children can reach out to for guidance. With video games, instructional videos and food monitoring, this app is bound
to help any child who is overweight or obese get on a healthy track. There are a plethora of weight loss apps available to children and adults to choose from, so it’s a matter of doing some research to pick the right app that is best suited for each child and their family.
THERE’S HOPE
Childhood obesity is an epidemic run rampant in America, but if each household implemented two simple rules (but not the only rules!), it may not seem like such an arduous task to expel it. The rules are as follows: 1. Eat well 2. Play more If children came home after school, dumped their backpacks, made a beeline for the door to play outside with other neighborhood children and stayed out until it was dinnertime or the lights came on, it would be one step closer to a healthier America. With physical activity a couple days of the week after school, kids would be in better shape. If they came home to eat a relatively healthy meal after their activities, they’d be even better off. With the knowledge of statistics on childhood obesity, the very serious health effects that come along with that and what can be done to reverse a child’s unhealthy lifestyle, families have all the tools they need to make positive changes before the next school year begins.
effect. This is a condition in which blood glucose levels indicate a high risk for development of diabetes. Obese children are also at risk for bone and joint issues, sleep apnea and social and psychological problems such as stigmatization and poor self-esteem. On the long-term front, those who are obese as children are likely to be obese as adults. Therefore, they are more at risk for adult problems such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, several types of cancer and osteoarthritis. Being obese brings on increased risk for many types of cancer, including cancer of the breast, colon, endometrium, esophagus, kidney, pancreas, gall bladder, thyroid, ovary, cervix and Healthy Living • 2015

Brainstorming: Five Common Neurological Disorders
Q
By Jessica Dietrich
uick! You have 10 seconds. Can you name two neurological disorders? How about three? You can relax now. Don’t give yourself a headache racking your brain for the answers. Much like an unexpected thunderstorm, we’re hitting you with five common neurological disorders that you or a loved one may have to weather through one day. Lyricist and novelist Paulo Coelho said, “I have seen many storms in my life. Most storms have caught me by surprise, so I had to learn very quickly to look further and understand that I am not capable of controlling the weather, to exercise the art of patience and to respect the fury of nature.”

Parkinson’s Disease
Awareness Month: November
Awareness Month: April
Alzheimer’s is a chronic disease that typically starts slowly and gets worse over time with a progressive loss of neurologic functions. It is the most common form of dementia. Shortterm memory loss is one of the first indicators of the disease followed by mood swings, lack of self-care and easily getting lost.
Parkinson’s disease is a progressive disorder of the nervous system that affects one’s movement. A common early symptom of the disease is an unsteady hand. It can also cause stiffness or slowness in movement. Someone with Parkinson’s may have little to no expression in his or her face. Speech can also become slurred and softened. The symptoms of Parkinson’s disease become worse over time.
Statistics: »» In America, Alzheimer’s is the only cause of death that cannot be prevented, slowed or cured. »» It’s the sixth-leading cause of death in the U.S., with almost two-thirds of Americans with Alzheimer’s disease being women. »» One in three seniors dies of Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia. »» Only 45 percent of people with Alzheimer’s disease report being told of their diagnosis. »» Every 67 seconds, someone in the U.S. develops the disease.
Celebrity Connection: Actor and comedian, Seth Rogen, gave a heartfelt speech to Congress about Alzheimer’s. Rogen’s mother-in-law was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in her fifties: “My impression of Alzheimer’s was probably what, I assume, most people’s impression is. I thought it was something only, like, really, really old people got and I thought the way the disease primarily showed itself was in the form of forgotten keys, wearing mismatched shoes and being asked the same question over and over. This period, which was the only way I’d seen Alzheimer’s displayed in movies or television, lasted a few years for Lauren’s mom. After that, however, is when I saw the real, ugly truth of the disease.”
Foundation: Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) www.AlzFdn.org
Statistics: »» Nearly 1 million Americans live with Parkinson’s disease, which is more than the number of people diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy and Lou Gehrig’s disease combined. »» Each year, about 60,000 Americans are diagnosed with the disease and this figure doesn’t include undetected cases. »» An estimated 7-10 million people worldwide are living with the disease. »» The incidence of Parkinson’s increases with age, but an estimated four percent of people with Parkinson’s are diagnosed before the age of 50. »» Men are one-and-a-half times more likely to have Parkinson’s than women.
Celebrity Connection: Diagnosed with Parkinson’s in the 90s, actor Michael J. Fox shed a positive light on the disease by saying, “I have no choice about whether or not I have Parkinson’s. I have nothing but choices about how I react to it. In those choices, there’s freedom to do a lot of things in areas that I wouldn’t have otherwise found myself in.”

Headache Disorders
Awareness Month: March
Awareness Month: November
Awareness Month: June
Caused by brain damage, cerebral palsy is commonly described by loss or impairment of motor function. It is caused by any injury or abnormal development of the brain that occurs while a child’s brain is still developing, whether before, during or just after birth. The symptoms of cerebral palsy differ in type and severity from one person to the next, and may even change in an individual over time. All people with cerebral palsy have problems with movement and posture and some also have a certain level of intellectual disability. Seizures, abnormal physical sensations or perceptions and other medical disorders are common in individuals with cerebral palsy.
Epilepsy is a chronic disorder of recurrent, unprovoked seizures. Seizures may affect any part of the body, but it’s the electrical events in the brain that trigger symptoms. It is a spectrum condition with a wide range of seizure types and control varying from person-to-person.
Headaches, one of the most common disorders of the nervous system, affect about 47 percent of adults. A painful and disabling migraine, tension headache or cluster headache fall under the umbrella of headache disorders.
Statistics:
»» Almost 500 new cases of epilepsy are diagnosed every day in the U.S.
»» Cerebral palsy is the most common motor disability in childhood. »» Globally, over 17 million people have this disease. »» Of all children with cerebral palsy, 60 percent of them are born at term. »» About 1 in 500 babies is diagnosed with cerebral palsy. »» About 1 in 2 people with the disorder lives in chronic pain.
Celebrity Connection: Abbey Nicole Curran is the firstever Miss USA Contestant to have a disability. She was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at 2 years old. When asked about her determination to become Miss Iowa by Ellen DeGeneres, Curran responded, “One of my teachers told me that I couldn’t do a pageant because I had cerebral palsy. And so, you know, that just set me out to prove them wrong.”

Statistics: »» Epilepsy affects over 3 million Americans of all ages, more than multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy and Parkinson’s disease combined. »» In America, epilepsy is as common as breast cancer and takes as many lives.
Statistics: »» Headache disorders are among the most common disorders of the nervous system. »» It has been estimated that 47 percent of the adult population had headaches at least once within the last year. »» Headache disorders are associated with personal and societal burdens of pain, disability, damaged quality of life and financial cost.
»» 1 in 100 people will develop epilepsy, and 1 in 10 people will suffer a seizure in their lifetime.
»» A marginal number of people with headache disorders are diagnosed appropriately by a healthcare provider.
»» Approximately one-third of all children with epilepsy continue to have seizures even with medical treatment.
»» Headaches have been underestimated, under-recognized and under-treated throughout the world.

Celebrity Connection:
Actress Hayden Panetierre teamed up with TalkAboutIt.org to spread awareness about epilepsy: “You know people with epilepsy may not say anything because they are afraid of how others will treat them. You can help change things by talking about it.”
Marcia Cross, an actress best known for her role as Bree Van de Kamp in Desperate Housewives, is a chronic migraine sufferer. In a recent interview, she said, “I would just say not to be a victim and to be your own health advocate and to take it into your own hands. You actually can affect the number of migraines you have and your quality of life and it’s worth the effort. It will increase your entire healthy lifestyle and reduce your migraines, so it’s a winwin situation, I think.”

“Bad” Foods That Are Good For You
By Michael Banka
Warnings about what we eat are as ubiquitous as junk food at a convenience store. But surprise: when consumed in moderate quantities, some notoriously “bad” foods and flavor enhancers actually are good for you.
1. Eggs Much maligned because of their high cholesterol content, eggs are one of the most nutritious of all foods. Plus, studies have shown that the cholesterol in eggs doesn’t significantly raise blood cholesterol levels and the biggest culprit in “hardening of the arteries” actually may be genetics. Because they are high in protein, eggs take the edge off hunger. That means fewer trips to the refrigerator and therefore less weight gain.
2. Bananas They’ve caught a bad rap for containing more calories than most fruits and for packing on pounds because of their carbohydrate content. Yet the average banana has only 105 calories and puts a curb on your appetite by making you feel full. What fills you up is a type of dietary fiber your body doesn’t absorb that also increases post-meal fat burning. Greener bananas have more of this fiber than yellow ones.
3. Salt We are constantly told that salt not only can raise blood pressure, but also cause cardiac arrest, damage the kidneys, aggravate asthma and cause kidney stones. Sea salt is an exception. Along with being toxic to bacteria and parasites (which is why salt has always been used as a preservative), it contains boron (helps prevent osteoporosis), chromium (regulates blood sugar levels) and copper (helps the body form new arteries whenever the main arteries become clogged). Both table salt and sea salt contain potassium iodide, which is necessary to optimum health. A good general rule is not to avoid salt (including the table variety) altogether, but consume it in moderation.
4. Chocolate It contains cacao, which is loaded with healthy chemicals called flavonoids and theobromine. The potency of these chemicals is much higher in dark chocolate than in milk chocolate. Studies have shown that consuming dark chocolate in moderate quantities reduces risk of stroke and heart failure, lowers blood pressure, contributes to weight loss (by reducing cravings for sweet, salty and fatty foods), mitigates the metabolic effects of stress, slows the reddening effect that is the first sign of sunburn, boosts blood flow to parts of the brain that could improve alertness in the short term, and provides diarrhea relief.
5. Ketchup It’s been vilified because of its high sodium content, but ketchup is one of the few foods to contain lycopene, which has been shown to help prevent prostate cancer. (See “Eating Your Way to a Healthy Prostate” in this issue.) Lycopene’s benefits are so well documented that it now is an ingredient in most multi-vitamins for those aged 50+.
6. Coffee In the beverage category, we’ve all heard how the caffeine in this morning wakerupper negatively affects the body, making you feel jittery and causing difficulty in falling asleep. Why then are millions of Americans consuming high-caffeine noncoffee beverages in order to get an “energy” boost? Besides being much cheaper, studies have shown coffee can help ward off earlyonset Alzheimer’s disease. Of course you shouldn’t drink cups of the stuff a few hours before going to bed, as caffeine can stay in the body for as long as eight hours. Be aware, though, that if you want to benefit from coffee’s medicinal properties, they are not nearly so potent in decaf varieties.
