Resolutions Growing up, New Year’s Eve was a pretty big deal around my house because not only was it the ending and beginning of a year, it also happened to be my dad’s birthday.

So to make sure my father didn’t feel short-changed because his big day landed on the single most festive savethe-date spot on the calendar, my mom made a glorious fuss every December 31 for the man she loved. The result of my mom’s thoughtfulness was happy news for my siblings and me because we were permitted to stay up very late at the annual house party we hosted for our extended Cuban family (cousins!) and close friends who would celebrate with raucous abandon. It was, needless to say, a night to remember.

When I was ten, our end of year gathering was in full swing when I walked into the kitchen to find my uncle—my dad’s younger brother and my godfather—in mid-story laughing with a half-dozen fellow revelers.

When he saw me, he threw his arm around my shoulders and said, “You tell them, Richard— and, remember now, I’m your godfather—do you think I’ll be able to keep my resolutions this year?” I didn’t know what to say because I had never heard that word before. “What’s a resolution?” I asked sheepishly.

My uncle’s wife, who’s hilarious, answered quickly: “It’s

something your godfather says he’ll do after three Johnnie Walkers!”

As the group in the kitchen erupted in laughter, her response only left me more confused. Over the melodic din of Celia Cruz blasting from the speakers in the living room and the men trying to one-up each other with funny I-can-do-better-than-thatanecdotes, I made my way to our bookcase and Webster’s dictionary. I read the definition out loud over the cacophony. Resolution: A firm decision to do or not to do something. Up until that moment, I didn’t realize what I felt had a name. I’ve always stood firm whether I’m doing or not doing something. Always.

There has never been a question or hesitation about how I wanted to conduct my life. For starters, I’m a hard worker. I’m punctual. I’m honest.

I’m fair. So when my friends invariably ask me what my New Year’s resolutions are, I gently dismiss the question for I believe the word “resolution” is a different way of saying “conviction.”

And in my estimation, you either have conviction or you don’t.

I recently read something Garth Brooks (of all people) said: “You aren’t wealthy until you have something money can’t buy.” He’s right. The fact that my mother made sure my dad never felt the sting of having to share his birthday with a holiday, says it all: My parents are indeed wealthy simply because they love each other. And that’s a resolution they keep every day, most especially on New Year’s Eve. Happy birthday, dad.

There has never been a question about how I wanted to conduct my life.

the hustle and bustle, the galas—I love it all. Every year I find myself modifying our holiday schedule and our family’s traditions in an attempt to fit in more celebrating wherever I can. This end-of-the-year fine-tuning has carried over to HudsonMOD as well, and during the last several months the team has been focused on planning our issues for 2014. Take us through the decision to develop 77 Hudson in Jersey City in the first place. Why there, when so few luxury developers were concentrating in Jersey City?

The truth of it is that we contemplated and built 77 Hudson during the peak of the real estate market back in 2006-07. Subsequent to this time the market crashed and values everywhere went south. One of the risky and unique things about building a high-rise is that you can’t stop half way through it: you are forced to complete it to move people in. So, I guess you could say that our timing wasn’t the greatest. But we’ve always felt Jersey City offers people fantastic value for homeownership compared to Manhattan and Brooklyn.

You recently broke a record by selling the single most expensive condo ever in Jersey City with one of your 77 Hudson penthouses. But for people familiar with the metropolitan area’s real estate, that sale was “affordable” by Manhattan standards, where a similar condo would demand up to four times the sale price. So is Northern New Jersey still a smart bargain for the luxury condo buyer?

Yes, the value here compared to similar homes in Manhattan is dramatic and it’s only a short ride by ferry or PATH train.

Given that it is estimated that it takes about two years from concept to move-in for high-rises to be built along the Hudson River waterfront, is your development team concerned with the recent explosion of interest again as the economy emerges from the low of 2008-2011? In other words, will there be too many available condos on the market at the same time when someone has bought in?

I think the cycle is somewhat inevitable. The best that you can hope for is to execute well and take the construction risk out of the equation. There will always be market risk.

Who, among your competitors, are doing a nice job with their own projects? What makes your developments unique?

I think Lennar at the Avenue is doing a nice job, as is Toll at Maxwell Place in Hoboken. We’re fiercely proud of all of our developments and we work tirelessly to ensure every one of our buyers is satisfied. We don’t win everyone over, but we are running well ahead of 90 percent on our customer satisfaction reviews and we are very proud of this statistic.

For the uninformed, give us the “elevator pitch” for why a Manhattanbased professional should consider

moving to your developments on the Jersey waterfront.

Would your company ever consider developing luxury rentals? After all, that is how the vast majority of Manhattan residents currently live.

We’re strictly focused on ownership and sales. I think it’s truly difficult to be all things to all people, so we focus our efforts accordingly.

Walk us through the most overthe-top property currently being developed by your company on the New Jersey waterfront. Is it one of the proposed penthouses?

I have a magnificent two-bedroom penthouse in the center of the building where you can see from the George Washington Bridge to the Verrazano Bridge and everything in between. There are very few buildings in the world where you can

I don’t think we set out with the concept that a particular project is going to be for mostly foreign buyers; sometimes it happens this way, sometimes not. The point is to start with a great design, execute well and provide value to the buyer.

For potential first-time residents to any of your properties, tell us the significant differences in your projects in Jersey City, Edgewater and Weehawken.

All of our projects have such different settings, the key to each is to try to be authentic to the area and take advantage of the light and views.

n Polynesian mythos, it is believed that the god of war, ’Oro, gave Tahitian pearls their iridescence by imbedding them with the chromatic brilliance of a rainbow. As legend goes, ’Oro then offered his creation to the beautiful princess of Bora Bora, who, one can only assume, lived happily ever after with such a fine treasure. But for anyone that’s laid eyes on one, the eternal beauty and sophistication of Tahitian pearls are undeniable; so much so that by 1880, France had to regulate oyster diving in Polynesia because the demand for Tahitian pearls had nearly forced an early extinction for the treasure-filled mollusks.

The mega yacht industry is growing but the super yacht industry has struggled for the last five years and it’s still struggling to come out of the global financial crisis.

Mega and super yacht: What are the main differences?

There’s no real definition. When you get over the 280-300 foot mark, that’s a unique market. I guess you would say that’s a mega yacht as opposed to a super yacht.

Tips for first time buyers?

I think it starts with not trying to do it by yourself—get an expert to help you go shopping.

Azzam goes 30 knots (35 mph)?

Correct, so that comes with all sorts of challenges just to get a vessel of that size moving through the water at that sort of speed. But the challenge is, I think, when you get up to these bigger yachts most of them will need to comply with more stringent safety and security aspects. So that classification would be more like a passenger ship.

What sets the Nero apart?

It’s fabulous. She’s been created as a replica of yachts of a bygone era.

everal years ago my close friend—Argentinean supermodel Inés Rivero, who’s best known for being one of Victoria’s Secret’s “Angels”— asked me to join her for Thanksgiving weekend in her beautiful home in upstate New York. Eight of us spent that festive, frigid weekend eating, drinking and, mostly, laughing. When

superstar hairstylist and beauty brand impresario Frédéric Fekkai walked in to join the close-knit gathering, the party really got started. Charged with preparing the turkey, Fekkai took as much care with the main course as he does on a regular basis for celebrity coifs belonging to Jessica Lange, Debra Messing, Heidi Klum and, most memorably, Hillary Clinton. He was into it. Self-deprecating, soft spoken and genuinely kind, Fekkai was a most welcome addition to our rambunctious group and I knew why he had such a loyal, devoted following: You want to be in his presence.

Frédéric Fekkai was born and raised in Aix-en-Provence, France to a Vietnamese mother and an Egyptian father and later moved to Paris to become one of that city’s most celebrated hairstylists by not following a particular trend, but by “customizing” a style for each individual client. At the time, this was considered quite revolutionary. Today, Fekkai operates seven salons in the US (three in New York City) and has

I never would have imagined this to be my life when I was younger but I can imagine it no other way now.

Are you the happiest right now?

I am very happy but I think it is most important to keep working and innovating because you must keep moving to stay happy. Nothing pleases me more than creating products that make women feel beautiful.

Who has the best celebrity hair?

I like the classic wavy, beachy look of Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and David Beckham always looks well groomed.

The question most people ask?

Most people ask what my favorite Fekkai product is and I will say, without a doubt, it is my Brilliant Glossing Crème—it’s a cult classic.

Biggest hair mistake women make?

The biggest mistake is not treating their hair like it’s the investment it truly is—invest in your hair and you will feel beautiful every day.

Biggest moment in your career?

Cutting Hillary Clinton’s hair was definitely a highlight of both my life and career. It happened in 1993, shortly after her husband became president and we added layers, sweeping the hair away from her face.

Tell me a secret.

I went to law school but it wasn’t something I was passionate about.
