Found My friends organized an intervention that I didn’t realize I needed. It was exactly a decade-and-a-half ago when the people I felt closest to, who also happened to be my co-workers, walked into my office at PressCorps—the magazine company I co-owned with business partner George W. Slowik, Jr.—and strongly suggested, um, demanded, I take a vacation. It didn’t sound that serious at the time, but to a majority of my colleagues, it was. At PressCorps, we owned or managed more than a dozen magazines. I was editor in chief of all of them (George was publisher) and as anyone who has worked with me can attest, I was hyper involved with every aspect at every magazine to the point of manic intensity. I had a tremendously talented team behind me, but an “If not me, who?” mentality permeated my work. That is until my crew said, “Enough!” About a dozen of my coworkers entered my office and asked me to name three cities I’ve always wanted to visit. I said Sydney, Rio de Janeiro and Montréal because I had been just about everywhere else I wanted to go. Rosie Case, our funny ringleader of mayhem and editor of Celebrity Style, placed pieces of paper with

those destinations in a box and asked me to close my eyes and pick one. And just like that, I chose Montréal. My assistant had been instructed to book me a ticket for that Friday (it was a Tuesday) for a weeklong vacation by myself. Oddly—and quite uncharacteristically—I didn’t put up much of a fight. I was going to Canada’s most diverse city the second week of January. The truth? I couldn’t wait. Only a 40-minute flight from New York City, Montréal was exactly what I needed that week: A foreign city I could get lost in with very few Americans and more than half of the population unable or unwilling to speak English. Morning after morning I would sit in different cafés in the older, French, more charming part of the city, flipping through Parisian newspapers I couldn’t understand and catching myself smiling a lot. During the day, I’d go to museums, shop in the famous underground malls or stroll through McGill University, while at night I’d dine in one of Boulevard Saint-Laurent’s spectacular restaurants. I never felt lonely. I never felt alone. I actually felt like me—the real me—for the first time in ages. How much did I love this trip? I went back nine times in three years—always in the dead of winter— because this city unlocked the truth of what traveling is about: Going away and finding yourself. It worked. I found me, again, in Montréal. Merci, mes amis.

DREAM TEAM “The magazine’s yearend ‘HudsonMOD 100’ will celebrate the people, places and things you need to know about,” says Publisher Shannon Steitz, here with business partner and MOD Media CEO, Jason Lembo.

Looking Back, Going Forward You are probably one of the many— myself included—who tends to take stock of your personal and professional goals and gains as the calendar changes and ushers in a promising new year. For me, 2013 brings with it more meaning and more excitement than any other year in the past. Looking back to the start of 2012, it was in these first months of the year that my vision of HudsonMOD truly began to take shape. Armed with determination and faith in the exceptional team I surrounded myself with, I watched as my ideas for a luxury lifestyle magazine unlike any publication this great region had seen before came to fruition. Even now as we plan for a promising year ahead I continue to be humbled by the successes of HudsonMOD and the shared excitement of our advertisers and readers who await each issue’s release. Beginning with this travel special issue, HudsonMOD will be produced six times in 2013 awarding us additional

opportunities to celebrate a ‘life well lived’ with our metropolitan-based readers. We will continue to provide the best in celebrity exclusives, world travel, luxury auto, fashion and jewelry, beauty, interior design and more that have become expected of us. Our passion for sharing the latest and greatest innovations in these categories will culminate with the first annual “HudsonMOD 100.” This yearend issue will bring together the 100 people, places and things you need to know about in New Jersey, New York and around the globe as chosen by Editor in Chief Richard Pérez-Feria and his talented editorial team. Most importantly, we will continue to celebrate those who help make a difference in the lives of others throughout the year, such as the DePasquale family of DePasquale the Spa who raised $90,000 for cancer care at Saint Clare’s Hospital with their 3rd Annual Fashion Fight for A Cure event (see page 86), aires Jewelers who ended their year with added support for The Red Cross and the victims of Hurricane Sandy (see page 85) and the folks at Kula For Karma who’s mission is to offer yoga and meditation free of charge to those who have been faced with difficult circumstances. While we’d like nothing more than to take all of you on an extravagant trip that mirrors those our contributors write about so beautifully in this issue, we hope that—for now—embarking on HudsonMOD’s exciting 2013 journey will be just enough to tide you over. It’s going to be a fabulous year. Won’t you join us?

hen you think of Reno—that seemingly innocuous spot in the far corners of Nevada—the word “luxury” doesn’t exactly jump out as an obvious adjective. Now, with the listing of that city’s ArrowCreek Country Club, for sale for $4.25 million, you must rethink everything. Maybe it’s time to consider saying, “Hello, Reno!” This secluded slice of paradise boasts a 36-hole course designed by golf gods Arnold Palmer, Fuzzy Zoeller and John Harbottle III. The rolling greens set amidst a picturesque landscape are breathtakingly beautiful. But don’t get too distracted by the natural beauty, you still have to make sure you remember to keep your head down and follow through on the swing if you want that hole-in-one. Once you’ve finalized your purchase, you’ll need to throw the grandest of parties to celebrate and share your newfound nirvana. ArrowCreek’s renowned Terrace Room is perfect for assembling some 150 of your favored guests. But, then again, why confine your friends to just one room when the whole gorgeous country club is yours? Proving that sex appeal isn’t all about low-cut dresses or skin-tight skirts, the Oscar favorite had jaws dropping just by showing off her exposed back and shoulders. That’s only part of the reason I couldn’t wait to interview the telegenic diva. as a lifelong beauty-and-media-hybrid myself,

I had to thank her for forcefully implementing awareness, business acumen and strategic order to fledgling salons and other small enterprises. here’s the thing that surprised me about our conversation: She is genuinely kind and passionate. On television, Tabatha coffey scorches with truth because it is genuine—and it came across clear as a bell. One thing is certain about Tabatha coffey—she’s not for the timid. Leave your ego at the door and prepare to bask in her eloquent, delicious truth. but, can you handle the truth?

how do you define luxury? comfort. That could be dinner with friends, a hot bath after a hard day or relaxing on the sofa with my dog and a movie. Of course, it could be an extravagant item as well.

how has living in New Jersey affected your life and career? I moved here from London, and New Jersey not only became my life, it became my home. I love all that New york city has to offer, but more so I enjoy the space, the landscape and the proximity to the shore in New Jersey.

Were there other career interests between high school and beauty school? No! I always wanted to be a hairdresser. No question.

If you didn’t or couldn’t do hair, what would you do? I couldn’t imagine not doing hair

or being involved in beauty as I am. It is simply unimaginable.

With Tabatha’s Salon Takeover, you leave behind a lot of collateral damage and bruised egos. Do you get a lot of feedback? all the time! I still follow up with salon owners and stylists from the first four seasons, and they still contact me via email, social media and hair shows. It feels amazing to know I’ve helped people to make positive changes in their lives and their businesses—even viewers.

are you still booking salon hair appointments? I still style for private clients, but I sold my salon last year to my salon manager. I still love doing hair. Sometimes I mosey down to the basement where I have dozens of mannequin heads when I’ve wanted to try something new or put a twist on an old classic. With the launch of my LuXhaIr hOW wigs and extensions line, I seem to be working just as hard, trying to spread good hair days via my website and social media @tabathacoffey.

Tell me something genuinely surprising about you. I’m actually a great cook and an avid reader. I can also blow out and finish my hair in less than a minute flat.

Our staff has dubbed you the “Simon cowell of hair.” What’s your reaction to that? I don’t have a reaction! [Laughs] I am outspoken. I speak with an accent. I’m not mean, I’m honest. and my intention is to help people see what they can’t.

Which hollywood celebrity has the best hairstyle? Marilyn Monroe. Or Emma Stone. Wait! Miley Cyrus. We all know her long hair looks great, but the fact that she felt experimental enough to take the risk—to crack the mold of Hollywood and cut her hair off—is amazing. She’s young, she’s cute—it looks great.

What’s the biggest mistake salon or business owners can avoid? Complacency is the kiss of death. Not constantly evaluating performance; not asking “how can we make it better?” or assessing and dealing with small issues at their onset before they escalate into larger issues—that’s the problem.

What do you wish salons and other businesses could be more aware of? I wish they would think about their professional image. I think it’s important to be comfortable and be ourselves, but we’re in the image-transformation business. When we arrive with our hair, makeup and clothing together, our presentation is everything.

Just wondering: Do you, anderson cooper and Tim Gunn hang out and discuss who has the best shade of platinum locks? No! [Laughs] But any time either one of them want to sit down and have that conversation, I’d simply love to.

s I lean in to shake Victor Garber’s hand just prior to sitting down to lunch at the chic Manhattan outpost of celebrity magnet of a private club, Soho house, to discuss his starring role in Nbc’s new soapy drama, Deception, it all comes back to me—the anxiety, the humiliation, the embarrassment—the moment that has replayed in my mind for a decade-and-a-half as a perpetual highlight reel and just won’t let go. It all stems from the night I convinced myself that I unknowingly berated Garber, one of my all-time favorite actors, via hotel phone in Los

One of our biggest magazines had to be done from Los angeles so, like clockwork, twice a month (every other Thursday until Sunday), George and I would book the same round trip flight (TWa), stay at the same boutique hotel in West hollywood (Le Montrose) and always stay in the same rooms, mine being a floor directly below his. This routine became second nature to us after months then years of doing it. Le Montrose was a curious spot because though it was no more than two short blocks from the center of the peripatetic activity that is Santa Monica boulevard, it remained largely unnoticed on a side residential street

OK, so on this particular weekend, George had to fly back to New york a day earlier than usual and I stayed for one more night. as I returned to the room on Saturday night prior to my departure early the next morning, I noticed that PbS was about to air a special concert by George’s favorite singer. Without thinking much about it, I dialed his hotel room and when he picked up the phone, I humorously (at

This singular moment in my life—a life filled with literally hundreds of amusing celebrity moments—has been fodder for many a cocktail party as “the” anecdote of choice and is so popular a retelling that this cautionary tale of hubris and humility has taken on near urban myth status among my friends. For years, this is what I heard within five minutes of entering a party: “Oh, richard’s here—tell us that Victor Garber story again.” and now, with the man of the hour standing directly in front of me, I knew I had to come clean. but how? at that moment I had to decipher if Garber was trying to brush away such a traumatic, if comical, event to spare me any more pain or if he, in fact, had no earthly idea what I was talking about. I think the latter is true and am now convinced that my friend behind the desk at Le Montrose was having a bit of fun at my expense. So in telling Victor Garber my humiliating Victor Garber story, Victor Garber has now provided me with yet another Victor Garber humiliating story. Irony doesn’t begin to cover it and I now believe in curses. Damn. Garber is tall—standing well over six feet—and, at 63, undeniably movie star handsome. but what overwhelms the space you inhabit with the actor can only be described as kindness: his brown eyes envelop you with understanding. his firm handshake is welcoming. his body

language is that of a close friend. yes, he’s tall and good looking, but what comes across loud and clear is that this man is at peace with himself, with his surroundings, with his life. So few people—let alone celebrities— give off such incredible generosity of spirit because they simply don’t have it to give. Victor Garber does. and it suits him beautifully.

AND THE WINNER IS “It is lovely to be acknowledged but, sure, I’d like to win one someday,” Garber says of his ten Emmy and Tony award nominations.

ictor Garber was one of three siblings born in London, Ontario (120 miles from Toronto), to parents of russian-Jewish descent. Though he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at 12, there was little doubt Garber was on the fast track to greatness and fame. he started acting professionally while still at ryerson elementary School and at 16 he was accepted at the prestigious summer theater program at the university of Toronto’s hart house taught by robert Gill. but Garber’s career trajectory took a curious turn as he began performing as a folk singer and later became a founding member of The Sugar Shoppe, a folk group that had some success on the music charts and appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show and The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. but it was acting—particularly on the stage—that would soon become Garber’s true love. after graduating from the university of Toronto, Garber wowed audiences and critics as “Jesus” in the legendary canadian stage production of Godspell in 1972 that featured superstars-to-be Gilda radner, Martin Short, andrea Martin and eugene Levy. Oh, yes, Mr. Garber was well on his way. as one of the busiest working actors on stage, film and television, Garber is also one of the most beloved. my decades of interviewing and socializing with actors and the boldfaced name crowd. Not one. ever. It’s as if a talented, self-deprecating Gandhi had reincarnated as Garber. he’s that beloved by his peers. his performances are as indelible as his choices: For every turn in hollywood blockbusters The First Wives Club, Sleepless In Seattle or Legally Blonde there are his Tony award-nominated broadway portrayals in Deathtrap, Little Me, Lend Me A Tenor and Damn Yankees. On television, his commanding interpretation of “Daddy Warbucks”

in Annie, “Sidney Luft” in Judy Garland: Me And My Shadows and “Mayor Shinn” in The Music Man continued the irreverent streak of success. but it was his role in director James cameron’s colossal life changing film, Titanic, that catapulted Garber to fame. Then, Alias. In what arguably became the defining role of his professional life thus far, Garber played mysterious (is he a good guy guy?) “Jack bristow” in the smash abc series Alias for half a decade beginning in 2001. That series—created by JJ abrams (Felicity, Lost, Revolution)—

as much as there is such a thing any more. as canadian ambassador Ken Taylor in ben affleck’s Golden Globe winning film, Argo, Garber brings a nervy gravitas to the role that is hard to shake even days after seeing the movie. and, now, as the patriarch in the addictive Dynasty-meetsRevenge hit, Deception, Garber is spellbinding and very clearly at the top of his game. The fact that he gets to occasionally play in the same titfor-tat schoolyard as fellow thespian dynamo John Larroquette in the drama is just catnip for true acting fans, me very much among them.

as impressive as Garber’s body of work is—and even with the heavy armload of Tony and emmy nominations, he’s unbelievably yet to win one—it’s his current acting choices that are perhaps the most interesting. his laugh-out-loud work as Lisa Kudrow’s politician husband on Showtime’s improvised hit Web Therapy is appointment television

ack at Soho house, as we peruse our menus, Garber and I are making amusing small talk (“kale is the new black”) and I suddenly realize that this affable man’s big three adjectives— adjectives that would define most people—don’t come into play at all. The fact that he’s canadian, of Jewish descent and has a long-term life partner, the celebrated painter and model rainer andreesen, are completely beside the point. In very real ways, my own big adjectives are so much more front-and-center than Garber’s it makes me take immediate stock and ask why. Garber resists labels because he’s an actor who won’t be weighed down by them. The reason I think Garber is so damn good at his craft—and perhaps why he gets enough credit to be nominated, but not enough to win major awards—is the dreaded “is it really acting if it’s so believable?” mentality. The answer is, of course, yes it is and Victor Garber has the gift-cum-curse he shares with many hollywood titans including cary Grant, Paul Newman and robert redford: They make acting look too easy. and it’s not.

sweeter to finally win?

It is lovely to be acknowledged but, sure, I’d like to win one someday.

Let’s talk about some of your most memorable roles. Titanic. I was the very last person cast in the film. I was playing Macbeth in San

Diego and after it closed, I drove to Tijuana (Mexico) to the set of the movie and met one of the most demanding directors, Jim Cameron. He’s a real director—know what I mean? Kate [Winslet] and Leo [DiCaprio] were a dream. I feel so privileged to be part of that movie; it literally changed my life.

Legally Blonde. I absolutely love Reese Witherspoon and I continue to be simply astonished by her professionalism.

Argo. I loved the script, and Jennifer [Garner] had something to do with this. Argo was undoubtedly one of the best experiences of my life. The fun I had bonding with Ben [Affleck] on screen and watching him work on set every day as the director was incredible. I loved the entire experience.

Now one of my personal favorites: Eli Stone. It was gone way too soon. I loved that show. Truly.

Web Therapy—is it as much fun to do as it looks? Absolutely! It couldn’t be more fun.

Turning to Broadway, how was Present Laughter? It’s easily one of the great experiences of my life. I had so much fun.

Is there a film role you didn’t get that you really wanted? Yes, Les Mis.

Is there a role you passed on that you regretted later? None. I’m so picky about what I do that I do only what I want to do.

Describe the perfect day. This one so far is pretty good. [Laughs] My good friend Matthew broderick and I often walk along hudson river Park before grabbing lunch in Greenwich Village and maybe seeing a play later that night and having a late supper. I’m blessed to know some of the most wonderful people in the world. I try to live by the thought that humor is the antidote to pain.

What’s your biggest fear? health is my biggest concern by far. Since I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes as a child—and my parents both died from alzheimer’s—I’m acutely aware of my health.

Define luxury. I like to be comfortable and, on that front, I’m very fortunate. I have my life, my health, my home upstate (New york)—I have enough. I don’t believe in having it all. I have enough.

Tell me a secret. I won’t put on a bathing suit. I just don’t do it. It stems from this selfimposed body image issue I have, but I’m working hard to get through it.

MUST-SEE TV “Deception is a new show for me because I’ve never done a show like this. I think the rich family drama and the financial corruption make great television. I’m having a lot of fun.” Suit: Tom Ford Shirt: Thomas Pink at Thomas Pink, New york city tie: ermenegildo Zegna at Saks Fifth avenue, Shops at riverside Pocket Square: Tom Ford at Neiman Marcus, Paramus Belt: Salvatore Ferragamo at Saks Fifth avenue, Shops at riverside ShoeS: Prada at Saks Fifth avenue, Shops at riverside ring: David yurman at Neiman Marcus, Paramus

Do you think that has to do with a fear of being judged? yes, I think so. The thing is, I’m absolutely judgmental about acting. That’s why I try to make other actors feel safe when I’m working with them.

Finish this sentence for me. Victor Garber is… I’m moderately content. [Laughs] Oh, but it’s true, richard, it’s true.

e fell in love with this house the moment we saw it. It’s an architectural wonder one simply doesn’t to see every day. Nestled in the countryside of bernardsville in central New Jersey lies this masterpiece dubbed “The bunny Lane house,” an exceedingly modern home that has an eyepopping and unexpected not-somodern twist inside. Situated on three acres, the home was designed by architect adam Kalkin and is a “prefab” house; that is, the home is made from recycled shipping containers, which can easily be transported. The outer shell of the home is an ultra-modern industrial shed with cool custom roll-up doors—perfect if you want to bring outdoor living inside. Taking a full year to complete, bunny Lane house has a remarkably cozy interior despite its voluminous spaces. The exterior is a blend of modern and contemporary, but the inside features a traditional (and wondrous) surprise. We asked the architect what his inspiration was to build such a unique home. his answer was straightforward and therefore unexpected. “I just had two babies and needed a place to raise them,” Kalkin said. “The house is a cradle for childhood.” On one end of this singular, impressive structure is a three-story wall consisting of nine rectangular rooms with a showy wall of windows sealing them in. a metal staircase leads to the second floor and a jaunty spiral staircase leads to the top floor. all rooms are the same square footage and feature exposed brick

walls, a warm, traditional contrast to the otherwise modern home. The living room is the largest part of the house, boasting comfortable seating that maximizes its gorgeous high ceilings. It’s quite a sight. The unquestioned centerpiece of the residence is the what-is-thisdoing-here? traditional, two-story 1880s farmhouse situated smack in the middle of the home. It features a wrap-around porch and cozy rooms with colorful antique furniture. It looks as if it were plucked from behind a white picket fence and gently placed in the modern marvel. The contrast of the Jetsons-like house and the traditional interior is ingenious. The result is just stunning. how did Kalkin come up with this plan for his home? “The world is a composite of the new and old so it is natural to work that way,” he said. “It’s the world we live in. I love to build things and see ideas become set into work. every building changes the world in a real tangible way.” With its striking architectural details throughout, Kalkin says the kitchen is his favorite part of bunny Lane house. “The kitchen is its organic soul,” he said. “It’s the place where raw materials of the earth are magically turned into thought.” Dreaming up—let alone designing and building—a house as monumental as this is equally challenging and exciting. There aren’t too many primary residences like bunny Lane house around that should be admired. It’s safe to say that this modern marvel will keep turning heads for years to come. as it should.

Bunny Lane House is a blend of modern and contemporary, but the inside features a traditional (and wondrous) surprise.

Named after robertson’s own Tiger Fund, the ten-day excursion takes place twice a year and is the ne plus ultra of luxury: It’s open to only four couples at a time, and all transfers between robertson’s three resorts take place via helicopter or private jet. you’ll have to get yourself to New

Zealand—which is less of a chore than it sounds thanks the plush environs of air New Zealand—but once there, prepare to surrender yourself to the diligent, devoted staff at Kauri cliffs, cape Kidnappers and Matakauri. you’ll be in expert hands. While playing golf in the shadow of epic scenery is the initial lure of the Tiger Tour, the journey has something for every couple, including horseback riding, jet boating, sailing and wine tastings. Downtime can be indulged at the luxurious spas at The Farm at cape Kidnappers or The Lodge at Kauri cliffs, and the resorts pride themselves on extensive wine lists, exquisite dining and meticulous attention to detail—no request is too large, no aspect is too small—all while overlooking sweeping mountain or coastline views. Private jet and helicopter transport is arranged from property to property, and all meals, pre-dinner cocktails and luxury accommodations are included. First stop, The Farm at cape Kidnappers, an expansive property whose 22 suites enjoy knock-you-overthe-head balcony views of hawke’s bay and the Pacific Ocean beyond. a rustic lodge and working farm belie the sheer luxury of the resort, which features a world-class golf course designed by Tom Doak, a wine cellar with tasting room and a couples spa suite. The itinerary includes 18 holes of golf, a Kiwi Discovery Walk and wine tasting at Te awa winery. Next up: the Matakauri Lodge in Queenstown, New Zealand’s adventure tourism capital. home to adrenaline-pumpers—skiing, bungee

jumping, hang gliding—Queenstown is also close to Milford Sound, a titanic fjord described by rudyard Kipling as the “eighth wonder of the world.” each of ten suites affords views of Lake Wakatipu, and Matakauri is minutes away from the quaint alpine bustle of the city. The itinerary includes a private helicopter tour of Fiordland and Milford Sound, 18 holes at Jack’s Point Golf club, an excursion into Queenstown and “The Dart river experience” featuring either jet boating, a forest walk or a 4WD safari drive. hop a private jet back to the North Island where the tour ends at The Lodge at Kauri cliffs, a 6,500-acre beachfront lodge with a championship PGa golf course overlooking the cavalli Islands. I visited Kauri cliffs recently—just before it was named to Condé Nast Traveler’s 2013 Gold List as the premier hotel in New Zealand—and it remains the benchmark hotel for every five-star hotel I’ve visited since. The colonial lodge is laden with 1930s details to pull you back in time, its 22 suites command jaw-dropping views and there’s divine spa using indigenous ingredients such as manuka honey and paua shells from nearby Pink beach housed within a thick totara forest. Kauri cliffs’ agenda includes horseback riding with New Zealand 2004 Olympic equestrian Kate hewlett, catamaran sailing off the bay of Islands, a beach cocktail party and barbecue and, yes, rounds of championship golf. This is the type of indulgent vacation that could only be dreamed up by an american. We certainly approve.

New Zealand’s reputation as one of the most gorgeous spots on the planet is well deserved. And how. 48 HUDSONMOD February/March 2013

All Roads Lead To Cape Town How this gorgeous city became the world’s “It” destination

I

By NadiNe Jolie

f you’ve been paying even casual attention, this has been on everyone’s mind of late: South Africa—and specifically that country’s most vibrant, culturally diverse city, Cape Town—is the new “It” global destination for sheer geographic gorgeousness and beautiful residents. This is Cape Town’s moment. It’s hard to believe that it’s only been 20 years since the end of Apartheid, particularly in Cape Town—on the tip of South Africa’s southwest coast overlooking the Atlantic Ocean— which has always seemed worlds apart from the rest of Africa. Whether speeding in a cab down Beach Road—sunbaked apartments and hotels on one side, crashing waves on the other— or sitting in a beachfront café in Camps Bay watching the sun dip below the purple horizon, it’s difficult to shake the feeling that you’re back in the States: A dash of Santa Monica here, a little Hamptons there, South Beach, South Beach everywhere. Perfection sums it up. Photos don’t do it justice; nothing can prepare you for the intensity of Cape Town’s beauty, particularly the majestic, ever-watchful Table Mountain rising over the city. Believe me, I’ve traveled far and wide, but am hard-pressed to name a city more gorgeous. Not San Francisco. Not Sydney. Not anywhere.

There are no shortage of five-star hotels in cape Town, including the ultra upscale One&Only and refined cape Grace, both overlooking the V&a Waterfront. however, on my recent trip, it was Kensington Place—an eight-room boutique hotel dripping with magazine and readers’choice awards and located in a leafy residential area close to both Table Mountain and Kloof Street nightlife— which really wowed. after check in, I sat with the concierge in the sleek lobby, buddha bar-esque music pulsating through the speakers, as we discussed the terribly pressing issue of the day: What were the restaurant and bar “musts” in cape Town? The itinerary for the evening was quickly settled. First stop: Grand café and beach, housed in a cavernous warehouse in Granger bay. It was as if I’d stumbled into Nikki beach in Miami—a beach-front bar dotted with white sofas and gauzy linens, and inside featuring golden chandeliers, roses and a 20-foot-long bar—but with a funky, industrial-chic Parisian flair. after noshing on oysters, quaffing champagne and finally going for broke with flatbread pizza, I couldn’t resist a wander, feeling like a little kid with all the playful décor scattered about (think lip-shaped sofas and life-sized golden animals). There’s no shortage of amazing bars in cape Town, and Kensington Place is near the epicenter of upscale favorites on Kloof Street. bohemian, chic and crammed with stunningly beautiful people, the Kloof Street area is a can’t-miss destination for both delicious restaurants (Societi café, a favorite of chris Martin, Sienna Miller and Jared Leto) and funky, anything-goes bars (bombay bicycle club). I capped off my night with a late-night dance party at asoka,

which has a tiki vibe and boasts an extensive artisanal cocktail menu. another night, I sampled the wares at cape Grace hotel’s bascule, home to the largest single-malt collection in the Southern hemisphere. When I graciously asked for other recommendations over the course of my stay, however, one name came up over and over again: café caprice. “It’s where the beautiful people go,” the concierge said. “charlize Theron is there whenever she’s in town,” said my lunch waiter at delicious café Paradiso. “all the South african supermodels hang out there on Sunday night,” said a bartender at artsy The Power and The Glory. It was inescapable. and so to café caprice we went. Like so much of cape Town, the Miami beach vibe of camps bay is striking. being from Los angeles and New york city, we’re not the type

to be easily impressed by “scenes,” but walking through the doors of café caprice, even we were bowled over by the jaw-dropping gorgeous crowd. While it’s a celebrity favorite— and, yes, we did spot some runway gazelles—the prevailing dress code is effortless beach chic. The girls sport trendy shorts with ankle booties; guys are casual in T-shirts and flipflops. Don’t let the laid-back vibe fool you, though: caprice is the spot.

fter a weekend of drinking (um, “cocktail research”), I needed to relax and unwind, banishing myself to the luxe Spa at the One&Only on the V&a Waterfront for a day of pampering. Tucked behind the One&Only hotel and situated on its own island of canals, the Spa at the One&Only is east asia meets africa, combining all the serene buddhist elements you’d expect from a world-class spa with specialty treatments featuring bespoke, indigenous ingredients. consider the Spa retreat Package, which includes

three hours of treatment time, one hour of oh-so-necessary relaxation in the exclusive Spa Suite and a yummy lunch by the infinity pool. Working up an appetite at the spa deserves some retail therapy, don’t you think? Just steps away from One&Only, the V&a Waterfront houses two retail markets full of stunning arts and crafts from local vendors. at the Waterfront craft Market, I picked up a wooden lion, beaded bracelets, table cloths, african art and posters, caftans and serving platters and spoons, to name just a few of the wares on display. beware: The shops close at 6 p.m., not a moment later. Of course, no visit to cape Town would be complete without a visit to Table Mountain. you can hike to the top alongside Saddle Path, but I elected for the cable car, which runs every 15 minutes and only takes five minutes to the top. The peak affords stunning views of the city, including the V&a Waterfront, camps bay and robben Island, where Nelson Mandela famously spent 18 years imprisoned. an excursion farther afield is also a must: how could you leave cape Town without sampling South africa’s world-famous wines? I hired a car and drove 45 minutes to historical French town Franschhoek for a wine-tasting jaunt. The theme of my cape Town trip repeated itself in Franschhoek: Most gorgeous scenery, anywhere. Franschhoek’s best hotel is Le Quartier Francais, a 21-room auberge in the center of town housing The Tasting room, named one of the top 50 French restaurants

hen communism fell in Prague, czech republic, it didn’t fall by the hands of a warrior or businessman. It fell at the feet of a playwright, Václav havel. It’s fitting, really, that this would happen in such a storied city. Taken over by Germans and then Soviets throughout the 20th century, the city has developed a unique personality, a feel undeniably all its own. From pain and suffering— common tropes in Prague’s history—rose beauty and luxury. From agony rose art, delicious food and beer and architectural marvels in combinations and densities rivaled by few metropolises. Praguers are survivors and, as such, they’re a laid-back bunch. When the times are good, why worry? They love their beer and they love their clubs. They love their pork and boiled potatoes, love their families and perhaps most importantly, they love their city. I do, too. When I lived in Prague, I lived by one rule: I would deny myself nothing. I would say “yes” to every piece of chocolate, mug of Pilsner urquell and every plate of svickova I was offered. and that was a lot. If I wanted to go for a four-hour walk around the city before dusk instead of doing work, I did it. If I wanted to stay in and read Milan Kundera books

and drink austrian sturm in my areyou-kidding-me? bohemian room, I did. If I wanted to eat pastries and knock-off Nutella for breakfast every day, I did (believe me). It was the first and perhaps only, time in my life that I allowed myself to let go of my hang-ups and literally go with the ebb and flow of a magnificent city. I didn’t worry about gaining weight— the beer I drank would be walked off while exploring the city’s hilly streets. I didn’t worry about spending too much money—this was eastern europe in the mid-2000s, when the uS dollar went a long, long way. and I didn’t worry about being productive. There would be plenty of time for that when

The National Theater is a must. The theater features operas with captions in several languages and it’s such a luxurious, authentic czech experience that it shouldn’t be missed. but before the curtain goes up on the opera, you’ll want to grab dinner. One of my favorite dining spots in Prague was café Savoy, located just across the Vltava river from the theater. It features different types of schnitzels, dumplings and meats all prepared beautifully. I recommend the pork schnitzel. although it’s not the most elegant of dishes, it’s surely one of the most delicious I’ve tasted in eastern europe. after dinner, the walk to the National Theater is a romantic one—you’ll see the glistening city lights across the river—and it’s the ideal place to stop for a moment and reflect. every night when we had the time, about eight of my girlfriends and I would grab some bottles of wine and delicious czech beer and take the tram up Petˇrin hill. From our favorite resting spot in the soft grass, we would watch the picturesque sunset in this, europe’s most beautiful and mysterious city. To our left was Pražký hrad. Straight ahead, the massive, ugly television tower in Žižkov, a gaudy remnant of a communist government that hasn’t existed for decades. below, in Old Town and New Town, streetlights flickered on and Praguers walked home from work or ambled towards cafés for a bite to eat. and, like clockwork, we sat there sipping and giggling, as schoolgirls are wont to do. Those sunsets with friends rank as some of my most precious memories, and it’s fitting that they happened in Prague, such a magnificent destination. Prague is so near to my heart, that it is difficult to choose the very best

to share with travelers. There’s the dark, but fun David cerný artwork throughout the city. There’s Frank Gehry’s famous “Dancing house,” a stark departure from the old-world architecture in much of central Prague. The Pilsner urquell brewery, located just outside the capital in Plzeˇn, is one of the most interesting places you’ll ever visit. Then there’s Old Town hall and the astronomical clock, located in an area that truly evokes old-world europe. There’s u Flek˚u, a beer hall where you’ll hear the drinking songs of Germans, russians and Irish travelers roar while you enjoy a plate of sausages. and, of course, Prague’s “eiffel Tower,” which in true czech fashion is taller than the

T H e S TA p L e S Let’s start with the obvious, swimwear. you’ll want to choose a suit flattering for your body type, of course, and avoid wearing the same suit twice on

the same trip. Don’t forget to pack a black bikini as a backup—it’s a can’tmiss staple. right now, there are lots of fun swimsuit trends to experiment with: Suits with retro pin-up style, highwaist bottoms and structured bustier tops evoke a flaunt-it-if-you-dare 1950s style. If you’re looking to go sexier, try lingerie-inspired swimwear— my personal favorite. Feeling a bit more conservative? No worries. Onepiece suits are very much in style and aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. Keep two designers in mind— L*Space and Vitamin A; each has a wide variety of options. Out of the water, however, you’ll want to look just as chic as you did on the beach. crop tops and cut outs we all favored last spring are still in play. Look to Herve Leger for cut outs and Jenni Kayne for a wide array of crop tops. Jason Wu and Stella McCartney are also great for shorts, blazers and dresses. you also can’t go wrong with BCBG Max Azria, whose colors and prints are pulled together with impeccable design. I’ve already purchased the “Luca” pant, “butterfly” jacket and “Sienna” short for my next trip. Naturally, no ensemble would be complete without a flawless pair of heels. always travel with the black classic peep toe by Christian Louboutin. If you really want to push the envelope, pack the 20th anniversary rose Du Desert leather gladiator knee sandals by christian Louboutin. heads will turn. Promise.

THe ACCeSSOrieS If you’re going to be traipsing on the beach in your swimsuit, it’s imperative to have a hat to protect your face from the sun’s harsh rays.

Don’t forget to pack the leather gladiator knee sandals by Christian Louboutin. Heads will turn. Promise. The Gucci natural straw wide brim hat is my perfect pick. coupled with your great hat should be a pair of knockout sunglasses. Invest in aviators from Chloé or Chanel or the oversized “cat’s eye” or “raquel” styles by Tom Ford. They’re ideal for hiding behind if you had too many glasses of champagne the night before. and to match those fab shades you’ll need the perfect bag. The luxury and elegance of the Ferragamo collections couple vibrant hues and color-blocking techniques that provide an eclectic spin on an otherwise classic bag. For evening, you’ll want to complete your look with a purse or clutch from Emilio Pucci’s 2013 resort collection. The chanel boy bag flap bag and the Python evening Wild clutch—No. 1 on my personal wish list—are impeccable travel companions.

BCBG OMG You can’t go wrong with BCBG Max azria, whose colors and prints are pulled together with distinct and impeccable design.

THE ExTraS For comfort and relaxation, chic headphones are a must. The standard ear buds are so passé compared to Molami’s Twine Silk Satin headphones. everyone should have a pair to comfortably—and fashionably—listen to favorite tunes to enhance the stress-free environment. and, of course, don’t forget to accessorize with jewelry—bracelets, earrings, rings, belts and necklaces. a little black dress with cutouts can be dressed up or down with the right accessories. and since these items don’t take up much room in your luggage, don’t be shy about stowing a few in your bag. There you go. your suitcase is now packed with the essentials for an unforgettable, fashionable trip. We can’t wait to see the photos.

What fashion trends from 2012 are out this year? Trade last year’s neon for primary colors. Greens, reds and royal blues are clear trends in Michael Kors’ and calvin Klein’s lines for 2013. They’re a bold statement and a wardrobe must.

Is it ever OK to wear black and navy blue together? Not only is it OK, it’s become a fashion must. contrary to couture urban legend, the combination of black and navy blue gives you a chic, stylish look that an all-black ensemble cannot always achieve. best of all, navy is still very flattering to the figure, as is black.

The textbook example of this is the velvet trend that Jason Wu, Gucci and ralph Lauren highlighted in their Fall/Winter 2012 collections. at best, I would say that black velvet pants or a dark colored velvet blazer are truly great sartorial alternatives to head-to-toe velvet outfits. e’re well into 2013, fellow anti-agesters. all the holiday dust is but a distant memory, and we’ve surely abandoned most of our New year’s resolutions by now. but a clean slate is a beautiful canvas. So let’s get gorgeous.

66 HUDSONMOD February/March 2013

The idea for this column started several months ago while ingesting anti-oxidant teas and skin supplements—asking myself a few questions you may have asked yourself: Is botox and microdermabrasion the only solution for unwrinkled eyes? Should I push

I like to start by using methods we can control. We know drinking up to two gallons of pure water (and/or green tea) will not only shed pounds, but also greatly improve skin tone, texture and firmness. Well, I’ve taken it a step further with “skin-a-mins.” allow me to introduce SIBUbeauty. com, a philosophy I was impressed by because it incorporates what’s known as the eurasian bioactive beauty berry. SIbu’s Sea Buckthorn is truly an “inside out” himalayan regimen that aids digestion (the mother of all health). It impounds powerful antioxidants and the rare Omega 7 to promote supple, clear skin while achieving strong, shiny hair and nails. The line includes potent nutritive drinks, gel caps and a no-nonsense skincare regimen that I found to be organically pure and matte, yet supple. and wait until you taste the Omega 7 Chocolates, which the company claims to be certified kosher truffles. remember “Pixy Stix” powdered candy? If you find your petite gullet requiring an even gentler intake or need a slam-dunk vita-format for children, consider AlternaVites.com, an amazing, tasty way to take a full-spectrum multi-vitamin. Just tear the convenient stick pack and

s dissolve the mixed berry powder on your tongue—that’s it! Another chic and glamorous option even your Pilates instructor would envy is Pure Inventions liquid concentrates; considered the ultimate liquid water enhancer. These ingenious, delicious, great-for-you extracts can fit in your purse and include remedies such as D3 for calcium and immune support, Wild Cherry Apple Resveratrol for overall anti-aging and Blueberry White Tea for a sharp mind. Now that we’ve addressed some internal beautifying options, let’s shed some light on new-to-market anti-aging skincare advances. As far as I’m concerned, Ester C (not Vita C) with Flavonoids—the white insides of citrus, are the most soluble and in skincare form are considered golden for even skin tone. Perricone MD’s

Vitamin C Ester 15 serum contains an unprecedented 15 percent concentration for an almost immediate collagen boosting, brightening and all over smoothing effect— and can be used on crows’ feet. Before its Cold Plasma could finish wowing the world, the Blue Plasma non-acidic daily peel is causing waves through the skin science community (Dr. Perricone is a non-invasive pioneer), providing a gentler bio-exfoliation that targets only the dead skin cells via salmon egg enzymes. Without redness or irritation, it peels and hydrates as one using a long list of other extracts. This is used as a treatment under your serum or daily regimen. To our benefit, it appears La Prairie scientists never sleep. I love when skin ‘anti-products’ feel like they’re marching. Behind their motto of “never look your age again” stands Cellular Power Charge Night. Whoa! A dual-chamber pumps out the breakthrough Cellular Power Infusion with timed-release Retinol—and separately, a boost of oxygen to balance and resurface your skin each night. Decadent. Worthy. I’m hooked! Additionally, La Prairie suggests alternating the above with Cellular Power Infusion ampule droppers (a four-week treatment), allowing its potent ingredients to re-ignite, densely hydrate and energize skin cells from the inside. Yes, please. Not rich enough for you? CARITA’s Perfect Serum Trio Of Gold is part of a trademarked skincare lineup that utilizes the exclusive CINETIC technology, which reactivates skin energy, flows and cell dialogue. To us, that means true radiance-youth activation, a three-gold nectar

containing pure mineral gold, plant gold and biological gold to restore all around vitality, radiance and lift while smoothing tone imperfections and wrinkles. Equally as impressive, focusing on elasticity, deep lines and pores is the Genesis of Youth Serum that ultimately re-sculpts and refines dull or sallow skin from within. One of my CARITA faves is the Lagoon Serum—a thirst-quenching gel and radiance corrector, from the super-duper hydration collection. You’ll find that much of this results-oriented line is interactive, meaning you could easily use Pearl Of Youth Nutritive day or night cream for seriously lifting and restructuring mature skin or any of the targeted moisturizers with any of the above serums. Exclusive and rare, caritadirect.com provides full access for those not near Red Bank or The Ritz-Carlton in New York City’s Battery Park. Considered a French Pilates for our face, CARITA’s professional Le Rénovateur service is one of the most astounding, customizable facials I’ve ever experienced, utilizing cloves, Lagoon Cream, citrus and crushed sunflower seeds with pulsating electrodesponges. Wow. Now, if you find yourself on an above-the-shoulder treatment plan that keeps you lying low for a bit, I say, shift the focus. Eyes may be the windows to the soul, but lashes and brows are everything. A major contender in past VIP lineups is HydroPeptide, having just added even more to my permanent repertoire. Bink. Bink. gorgeous serum. Just like that, lashes came in long, lush and full of color. The upside? Moderately priced (no rx), no darkening of the skin around the creases of the eyes and brings back those over plucked and waxed brows in a snap. The other can’t-live-without product is Anti-Wrinkle Brightening Toner. I’ve never had a toner work like an expensive treatment (buy two). It brightens discoloration while attacking lines and pores. HINT: Wipe a small amount with a cotton ball, then pat a quarter-size with fingertips and don’t rinse. Proceed to Even Out if you’re on a brightening program, an award-winning tone correcting and dark spot treatment.

So, now, let’s not confuse daily hot-iron straight hair with thick, shiny, keratinsmooooooth hair. Keratin is not a perm or a relaxer— it’s a treatment. Discussing keratin smoothing has become righteous sport for many, but I’d gladly wear a cap over the weekend to have amazingly easy hair for months. There are so many misconceptions about keratin. Many establishments are offering non-formaldehyde and “green” 30-day formulas at the same price merely because they’re not required to install ventilation or be specifically insured (state-by-state),

Following the heavy-metal fever that has flourished on high-fashion runways over the past several seasons, metallic surfaces are enveloping the home. Offering an array of shiny or weathered tones—such as the now popular rose gold and gunmetal—metallics have stepped beyond stainless steel as perfect accents and focal points. From embossed silver leathers or chain-link light fixtures to gold-plated writing desks from Giorgio Armani, more ore is in store for your living space.

WOW, THAT’S BOlD! Bold splashes of color are complementing the neutrals that have reigned for several years, and Harbinger points to citrus hues, turquoise and Kelly green as new favorites. And bold patterns in bright colors continue to make waves, “even hounds tooth and zigzag prints provide fun and festive interior elements,” Harbinger said. For Brown, abstract floral patterns, pushing botanicals toward bold, are standouts.

ewel-tone hues and woven metals, abstract floral prints and blown-glass wall screens: home design this year promises to chart new territories of style and sparkle. In December, hudsonMOD helped cliff young Ltd. host the annual trends forecasting event at the latter’s showroom in the New york Design center in Manhattan. Beyond color and texture, the tailoring details of high fashion on the runway are being translated for the home. Take for example the careful placement of “cerusing” (opening the pores of wood to accept a whitening lime agent for a streaked effect), piercing and interlocking textures. Meanwhile, panels with strategic cutouts that allow in light are artful room dividers. The intricate patchwork designs first seen in couture are now adapted to sofas and rugs, while overstitching adds a bespoke spirit to upholstery.

R gLaM SLaM “Luxury and glam are musts in my world,” Harbinger said. In 2013 you can expect to see the glamour of Old Hollywood transposed today to create “the type of rooms in which you’d want to throw a fabulous cocktail party.” Yes, please. The designers agreed that palettes inspired by gemstones are the new glam: “There are no boundaries to how you can use them,” Harbinger said. “Deep, rich gem colors, Murano glass and iridescence are all undoubtedly in vogue right now.”

RUggeD LUxURy Think cowboy luxe. Rugged luxury goes beyond the perennial use of animal prints and extends beautifully into textures. “Warm, natural materials that play against stainless steel accents and appliances in the home exemplify this trend,” Harbinger said. Petrified wood, stones, natural hides, sienna tones and even antlers(!) define the earthy design look.

MixOLOgy Mixology, coined by Brown, represents a cohesive combination of fabrics, patterns and opposing elements. “It’s a blending of old and new, of dark and light,” Harbinger said. Juxtaposing materials with controlled tension creates a design scheme that’s eye-catching and inspiring without feeling busy. An elegant dining room with dark blue-grey walls lets Chinese Chippendale chairs painted white to pop, while a study swathed in exotic furs and hides paired with industrial metals creates a unique retreat.

oumana Kidd is many things: Journalist, career woman, survivor, glamour girl. but the attribute that catches most people off guard is the fact that she’s nice. Really nice. “People automatically assume I’m a diva,” Kidd says. “They want to film reality shows about me, but come to find out that I’m not the drama queen they were hoping for and then they get bored. being a diva is what sells, but that’s just not me. I’ve heard a certain amount of surprise from a lot of people who actually say to me: ‘I never thought you’d be so nice’.” Joumana Kidd is a striking example of unabashed self-awareness. Kidd first made waves as the stunning wife of current New york Knicks basketball superstar, Jason Kidd. She was on his arm at every high-profile event and sat courtside watching her man do his thing for the whole world to see. Then, in 2007, her marriage ended and she once again made headlines—but not the kind one hopes for. Gossip and innuendo come with a megawatt union (and subsequent divorce), but Kidd rose above it and came through relatively unscathed. born and raised in california, Kidd has resided in New Jersey for more than a decade. “New Jersey is definitely home to me now,” she says. “It’s the only place that my children know as home. ew sounds signify celebration— or top off a romantic Valentine’s Day evening—quite like the pop of a cork from a champagne bottle. and why shouldn’t it? It’s a versatile drink that’s been the beverage of choice of society’s upper classes for centuries. but different champagnes are better for different occasions. We’ve done some of the work for you with the help of champagne expert John Oliver, director of marketing at r&r Marketing in West caldwell.

all champagnes come from France and are traditionally made from a mix of three grapes: Chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot meunier. The best brands are also the ones you’ve probably heard of, Oliver says, including Dom Pérignon, Veuve Clicquot, Krug and Moët & Chandon. Dom Pérignon Vintage 2004 is one of the best champagnes one can buy. according

Krug Grande cuvée, which will cost about $180 per bottle, features floral aromas, ripe and dry fruit, marzipan, gingerbread and citrus, making it a full-package champagne. “It’s the most well-rounded, full-bodied champagne I’ve ever had,” Oliver says. Veuve clicquot’s non-vintage rosé is a balanced, fruity wine that has flavors of fresh red fruits—wild strawberries and raspberries—the company says. as you sip, that flavor develops into dried, rich fruits and pastry flavors, like almonds and brioche. It costs about $70 per bottle. Moët & chandon has “a classic, bright finish that’s a lighter, fresher taste,” Oliver says. It’s a lively wine, perfect for energetic springtime get-togethers. Its Moët Impérial has notes of exotic fruits such as pineapples and plums. While there are a number of factors to consider when choosing the perfect champagne, ultimately it comes down to personal tastes. If you know you love only fruity wines, why drink something heavy and rich? That’s the beauty of champagne. In its long history, there’s something for every palate. how romantic is that?

It may seem like a daunting task— and it can be—but even for the savviest shopper, acquiring a yacht is no simple purchase. unique to your particular needs and desires, there are dozens of custom options available and plenty of details to consider before you set sight on a prime docking space. engine type are just the beginning, but we’re here to get you thinking details so you’re that much closer to transforming your nautical dreams into reality on the high seas. The first question to ask yourself is how you’re planning to use your new yacht, says Peter Frederiksen, director of communications at Viking yacht company. “Do you plan to travel more, need more room for family and friends, adding a professional captain or want better service from the dealer?” Motor yachts are the ideal choice for those interested in cruising, entertaining and island hopping. These yachts are conventionally 30-100 feet long, and if you thought a Ferrari was ostentatious, just wait until you climb aboard your sleek yacht. Motor yachts typically boast large deck space for schmoozing and sunbathing, and

a cabin with the embellishments, amenities and comforts your lifestyle demands. There are a lot of luxurious specifications to sift through, and hiring a decorator would certainly lessen your load and ensure a better outcome. Designing the cabin of a yacht is similar to designing a home. It is, of course, crucial to develop an amiable relationship with your master builder, and finding one is worth more consideration than a quick Google search. Speak with friends, family, folks at the yacht club and even charter companies for references and contacts. cost may not be your first priority, but there’s more to buying a yacht than the initial purchase price. Maintenance, repairs, fueling and docking are important costs to keep in mind. Size and engine type will affect not only the purchase, but also the amount you spend on upkeep and fuel. “No two Vikings are ever alike; they’re more like custom homes, albeit waterfront homes with fantastic views,” Frederiksen said. “Viking builds from 42 to 92 feet, and within this range there are 19 models. a Viking 60 convertible’s base price is $2.8 million, although when the customer adds navigation, communication and entertainment electronics, fishing or cruising equipment and custom accessories, it approaches the $3.5 million mark. The current largest Viking, an 82-footer, is in the neighborhood of $6.5 million, and the 92 convertible is in development and should be completed by the fall of 2014,” Frederiksen said. and start brainstorming yacht names now; you’ll be more likely to land on a fitting title by the time your dream vessel is finished.

events Fashion Fight For A Cure DePasquale The Spa celebrated another successful Fashion Fight For a cure event on November 18, 2012 in the ballroom at the hanover Marriott. The fundraiser, which honored long time Morris county assemblyman, the late alex Decroce, raised $90,000 to benefit the extraordinary efforts at cancer care at Saint clare’s. In addition to the cocktails, dining options and auction items, the gathering’s main event was a one-of-a-kind fashion show based on themes that DePasquale The Spa’s expert stylists and artists conceptualized and executed. Paying homage to current trends and classic childhood wonders, the top prize of the runway showdown went to a group of talented stylists who recreated some of the late alexander McQueen’s signature looks, complete with jaw-dropping fashions and gravity-defying hairstyles.

HUDSON HEAVEN “I’ll always hold onto this house on the river in New Jersey—it’s my slice of heaven,” says FOX business anchor, Liz Claman.

reporter for FOX business Network since 2007, Liz Claman hasn’t only made it in the journalism industry, she owns it. Having interviewed the legendary Warren buffett, Intel CeO Paul Otellini and Ford CeO alan Mulally, among numerous others financial all-stars, Claman is a New york City power woman and stock market expert who calls New Jersey home. The California girl-cum-New Jersey mom opened up to HudsonMOD about her hobbies: Fashion, athletic activities, squirrel trapping—that’s right, squirrel trapping—and spending time with family. — ERIN DOSTAL

I parachuted into New Jersey nearly by accident. My husband, then fiancé, was helping launch MSNbC, and I kept coming to visit him from boston. When I got my job at CNbC, I had a long commute. I hate long commutes—I grew up in La so I’m allergic to them. It was the best option for both of us to live in New Jersey.

you’ve run the New york City Marathon and you’re a triathlete—is this how you have fun?

Can you really enjoy jumping into the Hudson? I feel like I can say, “I did it.”

Tell me a secret. If you’re on a boat at the exact right point on the Hudson river, you might be able to see me naked in my bedroom.

In your career, have you faced any challenges because you’re a woman? I’ve always felt that the only challenges you take on are the ones you let in your path. I really feel that we’re all in control of our own destiny.

Define luxury.

here preparing. I need to know how to say “tax changes” in French. I’m always looking for the next big story. and I’m a total Francophile.

What’s the best Valentine’s Day gift you’ve received? a hug from my dad—oh, and a Cartier bracelet from my husband.

Describe your perfect day. Waking up and glancing at the Hudson river. I’ve learned to tell the weather just by looking at how the light comes off of it. Heading over to Jackson Hole diner in englewood for an egg white, broccoli and Swiss cheese omelet and eating four bites of my daughter’s chocolate chip pancakes. Then, heading to the city and seeing an art exhibit or going to the NyC Fire Museum—we love to go there—and just exploring. Then lunch at the Carnegie Deli, where I’d have the extra lean corned beef—and end up at a rangers hockey game. I also do a lot with my kids. I just built a squirrel trap with my son.

How does one make a squirrel trap? We took a Prada shoebox, taped branches of evergreen to the sides, put almond butter inside as bait and propped it up. I’m a Jew from beverly Hills. I don’t know how to trap squirrels.

“I’ve always felt that the only challenges you take on are the ones you let in your path.” Do you see yourself staying in New Jersey forever? My kids go to school in the city. all their friends live in the city. I keep telling them it’s great to be different. at a certain point, I know they’ll want us to move there. I’ll always hold onto this house on the river in New Jersey, though. It really is my slice of heaven.
