Principal’s Welcome Hello, and welcome to Hugh Baird College’s School Leavers’ Prospectus. Hugh Baird is an exciting, vibrant and successful FE College. We challenge our students throughout their time at the College to reach their potential and achieve their goals. Our enrichment programmes enable students to try new experiences, develop interests and meet new people. Essentially while we have high expectations of our students we also want everyone to enjoy themselves. What can I study at Hugh Baird College?

At Hugh Baird College, there are a wide range of qualifications and subjects for you to choose from. Qualifications will help you to develop your skills and knowledge so that you can get a job or continue to study at university. Different careers and jobs need different types of qualifications – and we offer both traditional and vocational courses. Vocational courses allow you to develop practical, work-based skills and often include work experience, placements and workshop- based teaching. Many of our courses can be studied to a higher level – and in some areas, there is the opportunity to study to degree level at Hugh Baird College. Our Careers Team can discuss your options with you – and don’t forget to talk to parents, teachers, carers and the careers service.

Functional Skills Whatever course you choose to study, you will continue to develop your key skills in areas such as communication, maths and information technology. School Link Programme Designed for 14 – 16 year olds, this programme will give you the opportunity to study a vocational course at Hugh Baird College, along with GCSEs at school. You can choose from a range of subjects including business, brickwork, childcare and catering. If you’re interested in opportunities for you as you approach Years 10 and 11. Other Training We also offer a range of courses for adults, including maths and English, to help in getting back to work and training for businesses. Our Learning for Life courses provide independent living skills for students aged over 19 who have a range of support needs, including learning difficulties and/or disabilities. Thornton College Run in partnership with Sefton Council, Thornton College is our specialist centre for people with learning difficulties and/ or physical disabilities.

Apprenticeships Are you looking to earn money whilst you train? Why not think about an apprenticeship? At Hugh Baird College you can study (usually on day release) whilst working for an employer. It will give you the skills you need to get ahead in your career, with the practical experience of the workplace. Real life working environments

Depending upon your course, you may be working in one of the College’s real life working environments. Our hairdressing and beauty salons, restaurants and florist provide practical hands on experience and give you the opportunity to showcase your skills to staff, other students and the public. You will be working alongside your tutors to provide a professional and high quality service.

Hair and Beauty – Images Hair and Beauty

Our hairdressing and beauty salons provide a range of treatments, giving you valuable experience of working in a real life environment. You will develop your skills in our workshops and graduate to the salons during your course.

Catering – Richlance Restaurant

You will be part of the team that provides superb hospitality and catering to the public, College staff and students. You will gain experience of a range of activities, including food preparation, cooking, reception and bar service duties.

Floristry – Secret Garden

You will be able to develop and showcase your skills by providing arrangements and displays for sale in the shop. Secret Garden provides attractive and professional floristry and balloon modelling. You may also have the opportunity to work on bespoke arrangements for weddings, funerals and special events.

Sports Hall

Providing the focal point for many of the sports and leisure courses, the Sports Hall is also used for College events, including fairs, awards ceremonies and displays.

Workshops

The College has a range of state of the art workshops where you can work with tutors to develop your skills in a range of real life environments, including floristry, brickwork, joinery, engineering and motor vehicle maintenance.

Our refurbished studios have the latest equipment which will give you the opportunity to work with industry standard equipment, ranging from music mixing to retail display areas.

Retention and Progression Team

The Retention and Progression Co-ordinators work to support and help you whilst you are at College. The Co-ordinators are available to talk to you about any problems or worries that are affecting your studies whilst you are in or outside of College. If you’re not sure about which course to choose, the team can advise you about career ideas and options; once you’re at College, they can help you with job searches, writing CVs and applications to university and higher education.

The College Health and Wellbeing Services are delivered by a number of external agencies who work in partnership with the College Health and Wellbeing Co-ordinator. The College has a well established Counselling Service to help you to overcome any problems you may be dealing with in College and in your personal life. The service gives you the opportunity to speak to an experienced counsellor and explore, in confidence, any problems you may have.

Employer Links Hugh Baird College has developed excellent links with local employers who provide work experience, placements, real life projects, and even employment for our students. Employers often visit the College to talk about their industry and can advise students about further study and employment opportunities. IKEA IKEA have provided valuable work placements for our students for several years. Last year they challenged our BTEC and BA students to design rooms for real life families on a budget – using furniture from the IKEA range. IKEA’s Interior Design Manager, Melodie Higgins, also joined the judging panel at the Visual Merchandising end of year show, where BA (Hons) and Foundation Degree students showcased their work. Melodie said “We’ve been very impressed with what we’ve seen of Hugh Baird College. The students’ awareness of the market, their professionalism and confidence demonstrate that they are industry ready and makes them very marketable. The tutors are amazing and both they and the students should be very proud”.

Atherton House

One Vision Housing

Andrula Webster-Gavriel left college in 2011 and is working at Atherton House, an independent day nursery in Great Crosby. Following completion of her Diploma in Childcare and Education Level 3 course at Hugh Baird College , Andrula has been accepted at Hope University to study Early Childhood Studies. Atherton House works closely with Hugh Baird College to offer practical work placements for Childcare students. They have also provided valuable sessions on interview techniques and employment advice for students as they look to take the next step from College. Alice Apel, of Atherton House, said “I have always found that our links with Hugh Baird College have been mutually beneficial. The staff are very cooperative and understand my requirements. The students respect our high standards and, as Andrula has shown, they can quickly grow in confidence and become part of the team here, working together to support our wonderful children and their families.”

One Vision Housing is a social housing provider, with more than 11,700 homes across Sefton. They offered a Bricklaying apprenticeship to Jake Jones, a School Link student. Following Jake’s success, and a visit to see the facilities at Hugh Baird College, One Vision Housing is offering places for more apprentices. Jo Watkins, of One Vision Housing Property Services said “OVH Property Services visited Hugh Baird and we were really impressed with the high standard of facilities available. We met with some of the staff and students and their work ethic and positive attitude really appealed to us.”

Beauty Therapy Salon Sharon O’Neill began her beauty therapy career as a mature student at Hugh Baird College. Within five years of completing her qualifications, Sharon progressed from working from two rooms in a salon to running her own business in the prestigious Crowne Plaza hotel in Liverpool. Sharon has recently opened a further salon in Liverpool’s Toni and Guy studio and continues to employ students from Hugh Baird College. As a judge at the College’s annual Hair and Beauty show, Sharon continues to support the College. She said “The standard of education that the students receive at Hugh Baird College is fantastic and the support they receive is excellent. I was the first employer to recruit an apprentice from the School of Hair and Beauty Therapy and I’m always happy to work with Hugh Baird students to give them valuable experience of working in this industry.

Royal Navy and Royal Marines The Merseyside Royal Navy and Royal Marines Careers Office has worked closely with the Public Service team at Hugh Baird College for many years. It has recruited many students into the Royal Navy and has been successful in recruiting appropriate candidates for the Royal Marine Commandos. The Careers Office values the benefits offered by the Public Service courses. The College regularly receives ships’ visits, visits from the Royal Navy and Royal Marine demonstration teams and careers advisors who give informed advice to future candidates. Business Administration – NVQ Level 1

Where will it lead? You could continue to study to achieve the NVQ Level 2 in Business Administration. How long does it last? One year The course will give you an introduction to working in a realistic office environment to gain fundamental office skills. You will learn about the need for office procedures and have the chance to carry out different job roles e.g. mail clerk or word processing clerk. During the course you will learn how to work and communicate in a business environment, and you will have the chance to visit different types of companies to get a practical understanding of Business Administration. Assessment is ongoing and you will produce a portfolio of work which will showcase your skills, including Word, text processing and computer skills.

In order to qualify for this course, you will need: • An appropriate standard of literacy and numeracy • Business Administration – NVQ Level 1 • If you are joining the course from school, you will need to provide evidence of good attendance at school and a good Record of Achievement.

Business Administration – NVQ Level 2

Where will it lead? You could continue to study to achieve the NVQ Level 3 in Business Administration, or similar qualifications, or go into employment. How long does it last? One year The course will build on the office skills gained during your NVQ Level 1. During the course you will study office and reception systems and procedures, and will learn how to work and communicate in a business environment. You will gain telephone skills and will study word processing, health and safety, spreadsheets and database work, by working in a realistic office environment. You will choose eight modules to study, in addition to four core modules: • Managing your own performance in a business environment • Improving your own performance in a business environment • Working in a business environment • Communicating in a business environment

Business Administration – NVQ Level 3 What do I need to enrol on this course? In order to qualify for this course, you will need: • A minimum age of 18 • Business Administration – NVQ Level 2 or • 4 GCSEs (grade A*-C) plus two years’ work experience in an office Where will it lead? You could enter employment, progress to university, or continue at Hugh Baird College to study a Foundation Degree in Business and Management. How long does it last? One year The course will build on your office skills, and prepare you to take on a responsible position within a business environment. You will carry out supervisory duties within a realistic environment and complete PA (personal assistant) duties in and around the College for one day per week.

During the course you will develop office systems and procedures and will develop your computer skills to a high standard. You will learn to develop effective working relationships with colleagues at all levels, and to provide basic coaching to team members. You will learn how to research and present information, study IT key skills, text processing and achieve a technical certificate. You will undertake several assessed work placements to develop your skills, and you will produce a portfolio of work which will showcase your abilities. You will choose eight modules to study, in addition to four core modules: • Managing your own performance in a business environment • Improving your own performance in a business environment • Working in a business environment • Communicating in a business environment

Business Enterprise – BTEC Level 2 Diploma

What do I need to enrol on this course? In order to qualify for this course, you will need: • 2 GCSEs (grade A*-C) – although alternatives will be considered • A general interest in business and enterprise • Good communication and research skills Where will it lead? You could continue your studies to the Business BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma. How long does it last? One year The course will provide you with skills which can be used in a range of careers. It will give you the skills to progress onto further study or university and will give you the opportunity to develop skills which will be useful in your working life. You will be assessed through continuous assignments and will develop a portfolio of work to demonstrate your abilities. You will study thirteen modules, including: • The entrepreneurial mindset • Creating a vision for your business plan • Financial modelling and forecasting • Preparing and pitching a business plan • Leadership and teamwork • Enterprise in the workplace • Business purposes • Business organisations 24

What do I need to enrol on this course? In order to qualify for this course, you will need: • 4 GCSEs (grade A*-C) or • A BTEC First Diploma (Merit), preferably in a business related subject • A general interest in law, with good communication and research skills Where will it lead? You could continue your studies at Higher Education studying Law or Business or you could gain employment within the legal or business sectors. How long does it last? Two years The course will provide you with a solid foundation for progression into Higher Education or employment in a range of legal or business careers. You will gain a broad knowledge of the English legal system and how businesses work.

Assessment is continuous and you will complete a portfolio of assignments to demonstrate that you have successfully completed the course. Hugh Baird was recommended to me by work colleagues and has a good reputation. It’s a good college, friendly with good teachers. I like that I don’t have to give up work to further my career. Music Technology – BTEC Extended Diploma What do I need to enrol on this course? You could continue to study for a Higher Education course, or you could gain employment. How long does it last? Two years This course will help you to develop the necessary skills to achieve success in an increasingly competitive industry. You will take part in performance events and product launches for recorded products which you have produced and will have the opportunity to create music videos, get involved in live performances and create original music on computers and in the recording studio. I like the sense of professionalism of the course and we are always doing something new every week. There is always a sense of progression, both individually and as a whole class. Since being on my course, I have done a number of voice-overs for course advertisements in College and have also starred in a promotional video for Connexions. I’m hoping one day to follow acting as a career, preferably as a stage actor in theatres. The next step I want to take is to hopefully be accepted into a drama school in London. If anyone was thinking of coming to Hugh Baird, I’d say do it. Just be prepared to work hard. At times it can be tough but if you put the work in, it’ll be worth it.
