Principal’s Welcome Hello, and welcome to Hugh Baird College’s A Level Prospectus. Hugh Baird is an exciting, vibrant and successful FE College. We challenge our students throughout their time at the College to reach their potential and achieve their goals. Director’s Welcome Hello and welcome to the Sixth Form at Hugh Baird College. We provide a friendly and supportive environment which will enable you to achieve your full potential. You have the opportunity to select from over 30 A level subjects with specific support in place to meet individual needs. You will benefit from our highly qualified specialist staff who will challenge you further in your studies. Our excellent teaching will enhance your knowledge and encourage the development of relevant skills for Higher Education and employment. We will support your development with advice and guidance relating to your studies and future aspirations. Retention and Progression Team

The Retention and Progression Co-ordinators work to support and help you whilst you are at College. The Co-ordinators are available to talk to you about any problems or worries that are affecting your studies whilst you are in or outside of College. If you’re not sure about which course to choose, the team can advise you about career ideas and options; once you’re at College, they can help you with job searches, writing CVs and applications to university and higher education.

Higher Education at Hugh Baird College You don’t need to go to university to get a degree. From Foundation Degrees to HNDs, you can study at a higher level here at Hugh Baird College. You can choose from a range of subject areas and our courses are approved by the University of Central Lancashire, Edge Hill University, Edexcel or AAT, allowing you to achieve a Higher Education qualification on your doorstep. Higher National Certificate and Diploma (HNC and HND) These qualifications focus on work related achievements and are developed in conjunction with the relevant industries.

Where will it lead? You could study Accountancy at university. I came to Hugh Baird because they have A Level Accounting and are the best FE College in Merseyside. What I like about the course is that the teachers are friendly and helpful. They will help you when you need it and always try their best to support you. Whilst on this course, I’ve been a Student Ambassador and a member of the Student Council. Michaela Jane Jones Before Hugh Baird: Gateacre Comprehensive School Course: A Levels in Media, Art and Sociology

I love doing art as it is so relaxing up in the art rooms here and the tutors are helpful. I have already been accepted onto the Pre-degree Foundation Studies in Art. The advice Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d give to anyone who was thinking of coming to Hugh Baird College is that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a friendly place.

This course will allow you to pursue, extend and develop your study of art and design to a greater depth. The course is flexible and allows you to develop your personal ideas. It includes subject related history and theory, and will give you a sound and comprehensive grounding for further study at higher education institutions, including Hugh Baird College. You will be assessed by an end of term examination, which includes a five hour controlled test (AS Levels) or fifteen hour controlled test (A2 Level). This will be supported by your course work folder and a personal study.

The things I like about the course are the tutors and the teaching styles. The best things about the College are meeting new people and the comfy couches! After college, I want to move away to a university and then I want to go into a business, possibly in a management role. The services at Hugh Baird are good, always available and very supportive. This course introduces you to the challenges and issues of starting a business, including financial planning. It will focus on how established businesses could improve their performance. You will consider strategies for larger businesses and how managers might measure the performance of their business. You will also consider the effect that external factors can have on businesses and how to plan for, and manage change, including leadership style and changing business culture. Dance

This course provides you with the opportunity to gain experience of performance and choreography and to engage in critical thinking about dance. The course promotes a healthy lifestyle through an awareness of the importance of exercise and training. Through the analysis, interpretation and evaluation of dances you will gain an appreciation and understanding of their historical and cultural context. You will take your first steps in developing your own creativity as a dancer and choreographer. AS Level: • Understanding dance • Choreography and performance - You will learn from studying professional dancers to understand how dance can portray human emotions and stories, emulate meaning and expression - Your coursework will include physical, interpretative and performance skills

A2 Level: • Dance appreciation - You will study a dance genre (ballet, modern dance or jazz). There will be a set piece to study, chosen from three professional dance pieces • Group choreography and solo performance - You will develop your choreography skills even further, creating a dance piece for others to perform - You will choreograph your very own performance in the style of one of the three genres

You will explore how stories are told and examine how narrative works in texts, with an introduction to the study of genre through the analysis of drama. A2 Level: • Performance Contexts 2 You will study a number of extracts of works to support your study of one of the following topics: - Post-modern approaches to the Performing Arts since 1960 - Politics and Performance since 1914 - The Twentieth-Century American Musical - Approaches to Performance in the Far East

Through the study of practitioners and genres, you will explore the cultural, social and historical contexts in which the performing arts operate and evaluate your own performance work. You will develop the ability to discuss your practical work using appropriate technical and expressive language. AS Level: • Creating Performance You will be required to complete: - a skills-based workshop in individual art forms (eg dance, drama, music) - a short performance piece in each individual art form - a longer performance piece that combines elements of all three art forms, and has a community focus - a written commentary on the practical work as a whole

• Performance Project You will complete two performance assessments consisting of: - a performance realisation of one of the works from the repertoire you have studied for either Performance Contexts 1 or 2 - a student devised performance

The course is designed to encourage you to explore all aspects of physical education with particular reference to increasing participation in physical activity and exercise. You will also gain a rounded view of the human form in terms of anatomy and physiology. The key aim is to provide a broad understanding of the performer and their surrounding participation environment. This course focuses on issues of culture and socialisation and will identify trends in contemporary Britain. You will study various topics focusing on the family, crime and deviance.
