Welcome to Higher Education at Hugh Baird College From Foundation Degrees to HNDs, you can study at a higher level here at your local College. You can choose from a range of subject areas and our courses are approved by UCLan, Edge Hill University, Edexcel and AAT, allowing you to achieve a Higher Education qualification on your doorstep.

Hugh Baird College offers a range of Higher Education courses. Our Foundation Degrees are approved by either the University of Central Lancashire or Edge Hill University. Foundation Degrees
● Health and Social Care
These courses offer an academic qualification as well as the opportunity to develop your practical skills. Available as part time or full time courses, our Foundation Degrees will provide the basis of your full Honours Degree. Choose from:

●C hildren, Young People and their Services Building on work experience, this course will help you to become more effective in your professional role. It includes 48 days placement each year and encourages collaboration between professionals working with children and young people.

Based on industry requirements, this course gives you the opportunity to combine practical and theoretical skills. It includes a practical industry placement and gives you the basis for a wide range of careers within the sector.
● Art and Design – National Diploma Pre Degree Foundation
This Foundation course provides a broad Art and Design education, covering a wide range of subjects. It will prepare you for more advanced study at BA (Hons) or Foundation Degree level, leading to opportunities in art and design related careers.
BA (Hons) ● Visual Merchandising and Promotional Design
This course provides you with the opportunity to build on your Foundation Degree and achieve a full Honours Degree. Designed in conjunction with the industry, this commercial course will encourage you to study independently and specialise in a focused area.
Accountancy ● AAT Level 4 Diploma in Accounting
This part time course provides you with the final level of study for the AAT Accounting qualification. It combines personal study with College classes.

Overview of Higher Education courses
Higher National Certificate and Diploma (HNC and HND) These qualifications focus on work related achievements and are developed in conjunction with the relevant industries. ● Art and Design
This course provides you with a specialist work related programme of study which includes practical and theoretical knowledge and allows you to specialise in one of five areas.
Teaching Qualifications ● Certificate in Education (PGCE)
This part time course will provide you with a qualification for teaching in the Lifelong Learning sector. It is open to all new in service teachers, trainers and tutors, and will include practical teaching practice combined with College based learning.

● Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector Certificate
A short course leading to a free standing qualification in initial teacher training. It will give you a clear picture of the knowledge and skills required for teaching, learning and assessing in the Lifelong Learning sector.
●T eaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector Certificate
This course is for all new in service teachers, trainers and tutors in the Lifelong Learning sector. It will provide you with a qualification related to teaching on a one to one basis or teaching a limited range of subjects within the curriculum. It will give you the opportunity to undertake over 30 hours of teaching practice.
Student life As a student of Hugh Baird College, you are able to enjoy all of our facilities – including free Wi-Fi which is available across the College campus. If you’re studying at Hugh Baird College on one of our UCLan validated courses, you can enjoy all the benefits offered to UCLan students.
Our students enjoy activities throughout the year, from Induction Week in September, through to trips, visits and guest speakers which are organised as part of your course. The College has a Student Council which provides feedback on all areas of College life; students are encouraged to play an active part in the Council.
Bootle has its own community, but for many students, the city life of Liverpool is a real attraction. Only ten minutes away by train from College, Liverpool is a vibrant city which plays host to world class music and entertainment. Theatres, cinemas and galleries add to the mix, whilst independent shops in Bold Street and the successful Liverpool One shopping centre provide plenty to keep you busy.

You can enjoy a wide range of facilities when you join Hugh Baird College. Whilst our teaching facilities and resources are excellent, we also understand that you want to relax at College and socialise with friends. Higher Education Suite A light, airy and modern space where you can enjoy lectures, seminars – or just study privately or with friends. With free laptops and adjacent to the library, the study area is accessible only by our Higher Education students.
Sports Hall As well as providing facilities for sports and leisure courses, the Sports Hall is a focal point for careers and employment fairs, awards ceremonies and fundraising events .
Media and Art studios Our refurbished studios have the latest equipment which will give you the opportunity to work with industry standard equipment.

What financial support is available? Hugh Baird College bursaries – A package of benefits worth up to £1,500 is available (depending on your course). National Scholarship Scheme – Awards, worth £3,000 in cash benefits and fee/ accommodation waivers for academic year 2012/13, for eligible prospective full-time students.
Tuition Fee Loan – You can apply for a loan from the Government to pay for your tuition fees. The money is paid directly from the Government to the College or university so you don’t have to find the money to pay for your tuition costs. You don’t have to start repaying the loan until you’re earning over £21,000 a year, and you will pay it back at an agreed rate. Any money still outstanding on the student loan after 30 years will be written off. For more detailed information, see the Government website: http://studentfinance-yourfuture.direct.gov.uk Maintenance Grant – To help full time students with living costs. Grants are available for students whose household income is £42,875 or less. You don’t have to pay this money back. Maintenance Loans – You can apply for a Maintenance Loan, which is for living costs such as accommodation, travel, food, books etc. The amount available depends on household income, if living at home or in student accommodation. This money must also be repaid, but only after graduation when earning are above £21,000 per year.

What do I need to enrol on this course? You will need either ● One AS Level (usually Art) supported by three GCSE Grades A* to C, or ● A BTEC Extended Diploma in Art and Design and ● A portfolio of work ● Aged 18 or over ● A successful interview Mature applicants (over 19) will be admitted on the basis of interview and must show evidence of an aptitude for this level of qualification.
The course provides a broad Art and Design education, including drawing, colour study, painting, figure drawing, life and location drawing, photography, film and video, art and design history and 3-dimensional design including wood, metal, ceramics, plaster. This course is designed for those wishing to start a career in the accountancy profession. It is the final level of a highly regarded professional qualification and increasingly popular with employers. As an AAT qualified accounting technician you will have an internationally recognised and respected qualification that shows potential employers that you have been trained to a high standard. This course runs two evenings per week or one full day per week for one year.

What do I need to enrol on this course? You will need either: ● A minimum of 40 points from one A level or equivalent in a related subject, plus GCSE Mathematics at grade C or equivalent or ● A BTEC Level 3 qualification in Computing and IT (students with DDD are guaranteed a place subject to numbers) or ● An Access to Higher Education Certificate (IT) awarded by an approved further education institution and ● A successful interview and ● Aged 18 or over Mature learners may have extensive work experience (paid and/or unpaid) and/or achievement of a range of professional qualifications in their work sector.
