Our first season of 2019 was a belter! We've enjoyed some great films, and with membership and audience numbers higher than ever we’re enjoying them with more of you! We’ve no doubt this new season will keep that momentum going. As ever, at its heart is our weekly programme of the best new release world and independent cinema. We have films from Lebanon, Italy, Belgium, Sweden, Germany, France and Iceland as well as the best English-language features, and we’ve got you covered if you’re a fan of heartbreaking emotion, coming-of-age comedy, timely social drama, science fiction, art history and much more. As ever our friends at Yorkshire Silent Film Festival will be joining us, and we’re also delighted to be working again with Doc n’ Roll Film Festival after their successful visit to Hull in 2017. New events include a special screening in partnership with the Kiev International Short Film Festival, and a programme of films nominated for the Best Short Film Prize at the Austrian Film Academy Awards. It’s another three months of brilliant films that you won’t find anywhere else, so why not join us to Discover Something Different?

THE GENERAL

The 1926 silent film with live score

Fri 7 June, 8.00pm Hull Truck Theatre

The General is considered the last great comedy of the silent era, and it consistently ranks as one of the greatest comedies of all time on international critics’ polls. Buster Keaton portrays the engineer Johnnie Gray, who is rejected by the Confederate Army and then suffers the further humiliation of his girlfriend thinking him a coward. When a small band of Union soldiers penetrate far beyond Confederate lines to steal his locomotive, Johnnie sets off in hot pursuit. Seven of the film’s eight reels are devoted to the chase, with its orchestration of thrills and comedy. Live improvised score by Jonny Best (piano) and Trevor Bartlett (percussion). Directed by Buster Keaton, Clyde Bruckman USA | 1926 | 79 min | Comedy Language: Silent (English title cards) Cast: Buster Keaton, Marion Mack, Glen Cavander
