Welcome to the first season of 2019 at Hull Independent Cinema. 2018 was a great year, with our regular weekly films supplemented by special events with partners such as Sheffield Doc/Fest, Back to Ours, Doc’n Roll and many more, plus our own Hull Film Festival and Dead of Night Hull Horror Film Festival. This year is going to be no different, as this first season demonstrates. As ever, we have our weekly screenings of the best new-release films with highlights such as 2018 Palme d’Or winner SHOPLIFTERS and provocative new work from Lars von Trier, THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT, plus the regular return of our friends at Yorkshire Silent Film Festival. Also this season we’re delighted to be working once more with Leeds International Film Festival, presenting some of the best of world cinema with no UK theatrical release. Make sure you get yourselves along for a chance to see some real hidden gems. It all adds up to a brilliant three months of films that you won’t find anywhere else, so why not join us to Discover Something Different?

BLACKMAIL
The 1929 silent film with live score
Tue 19 March, 7.00pm Hull Truck Theatre
After killing a man in self-defense, a young woman is blackmailed by a witness to the event. Alfred Hitchcock’s sinister, suspenseful tale of crime and romance is one of the last British silent films to be made. Through its mixture of location filming and cast of believable working-class characters, Blackmail is a rich evocation of London life in the late 1920s with scenes in the London Underground, Whitehall, the Lyon’s Tea House at Piccadilly Circus, and a climactic chase in and atop the British Museum. Live improvised score by Jonny Best (piano) and James Hedgecock (percussion). Directed by Alfred Hitchcock UK | 1929 | 85 min Language: Silent (English title cards) Cast: Anny Ondra, John Longden, Sara Allgood
