DUCK
HUNTING & FISHING NZ
seated range
ANDY TANNOCK HUNTING & FISHING NZ, FounderA mate confesses when he visits his pond pre-season, he’ll sometimes spend time just sitting in his maimai watching ducks. Of course, I say it’s because he’s a duckaholic tragic, but he assures me he’s simply ‘practicing waiting’. Yep, we do sometimes spend what seems like ages between ducks, and it’s important to stay vigilant throughout these quiet spells. You’ll be sprung if you’ve stood up because of a numb bum, or you’ve gotten bored and lost concentration because you’re uncomfortable. So maimai seating is important. There are times especially when we’re running and gunning, following duck movements around flood water, or staked out on crop margins, that having a maimai with a constructed seat is not an option because we’re hunkering down behind a camo net or in amongst some quickly cut foliage.
To be successful you must be comfortable to sit, wait, and be ready, a scenario Hunting & Fishing NZ has sorted with some great exclusive options. This includes the Molesworth folding camo camp chair that is sturdy on uneven ground, low profile for better concealment, very comfortable and of course camo. It also features a cup holder, and is extremely handy to pack-in with the included carry bag and sling. The budding young hunter is sorted too, with a ‘mini me’ version named the Dunstan, which he or she will love and most likely will keep them more settled between the action. These both double as regular camp chairs so your better-half will be excited about this, knowing you’re not just investing in yet another hunting item.
You can’t discuss portable hunting seating without highlighting the iconic camo swivel-seat buckets. Perfect in many scenarios, such as the quick evening hunt with your more precious items sealed dry inside and the things you want quick access to, organised in the external pockets. Features also include a carry sling for hands-free walking, plus the padded camo swivel seat which enables you to turn and face approaching ducks, all while remaining concealed.

AVERY PRO-GRADE MALLARD DECOY HARVESTER PACKS
Simon McMillan HUNTING & FISHING NZ, ChristchurchI have been a long-time user of many series of Avery decoys, but a mainstay for me nowadays are the Pro-Grade Mallard Harvester Packs. This is because in one decoy pack, you get a complete variety of head and body postures, perfect for portraying a truly natural duck-like scene. Pro-Grade Harvester packs are available in regular floating pack options, fully flocked options, and full-body options for pond edge or land-based hunting.
My fascination with Avery is not just due to the fact that they make a great looking decoy through their attention to detail in finishing and painting, but also they are one of the, if not the most durable decoys I have used, particularly so in the XD series. I find with the variation in body and head positions the Harvester Pack ensures I hunt over some of the most versatile decoys out there, in all of my spreads. Living in Canterbury gives me a 3-month season and plenty of opportunity to hunt varying styles from the big water of Lake Ellesmere to irrigation ponds, braided rivers, and small farm ponds. In a really big wind on Ellesmere I need less decoys so select the more alert postures I’ve observed in natural ducks that are fired up by the conditions.
The Dura-keel gives me the confidence that the decoys will sit and ‘swim’ just how I want them in the spread, and the variation and finish will give incoming ducks the confidence to commit nice and close for me to do the rest. I strongly recommend you check out the complete Avery range, including the Harvester Pack options in your local Hunting and Fishing New Zealand store as you prepare for the upcoming season.
Allen Concealment Range
MattHamilton HUNTING & FISHING NZ, Westgate
Concealment is one of the biggest parts of my waterfowling gear ensemble. Whether it be my outer clothing gear, blind, gun, hands or face, I’m always sure to perfect my concealment before the hunt kicks off. Gamebirds have an incredible sense of sight and are tuned in to spotting anything that looks even slightly out of place in their natural environment. You want to eliminate what’s likely to attract their attention to you, like movement of uncovered hands and face.
The Allen range of concealment products are perfect to solve this issue. The facemask range solves the problem when you need a quick face covering, they’re lightweight and easy to breathe in. There are two options, starting at only $29.99 for the ¾ head net, and $34.99 for the full. However, if you’re out for the day or find face cover annoying, or you want to camo your hands but its too hot for gloves, grab the Allen Vanish Camo Face Paint Kit. It includes 4 earthy face paint colours plus a handy mirror to ensure you cover up just where you need it. Or just keep things simple with the Vanish 3-colour Camo Face Paint Stick set kit.
With a forever expanding set of equipment on the hunt, there’s often pesky shiny parts that are easily covered with the Allen camo cloth tape or duct tape. As well as concealment, the tape options double as an essential piece of kit to repair gear in the field such as camo netting, gear bags or to cover up a bright blued gun barrel. The cloth tape is only $24.99 and the duct tape at $39.99.
There’s plenty more in the Allen range so check it out and disappear into the wetland this season!
Final Approach
Paradise Duck Silhouettes
Braided Creative
One thing that waterfowlers in New Zealand have been after for a while now is a decent shelduck silhouette. It’s awesome that Final Approach have little old New Zealand on their minds, and have put the effort in to come up with a product specifically for us Kiwis.
FA have created a silhouette light enough to carry a few dozen easily, durable enough so they can be used without worry and they definitely look the part. At under 1.5kg per dozen, along with being able to fit five dozen into a bag at 52cm X 30cm X 73cm, means that these silos are incredibly easy to transport.
The prototypes which I trialled last season, were very effective on field/ paddock hunts and equally as effective on the edges of water. The silhouette itself is held in the ground by two metal pins, making them steady in the wind easily adjustable when hunting shallow or tidal water.
The different postures create great variety, and allow us to set our spread to suit our hunting (roosts, feeding, traffic etc). With the opportunities to hunt parrys being so plentiful, these silhouettes are a must have for any waterfowler in New Zealand.

He probably knows how to use it!” Infamous words spoken by Scott Kunac back in the day, describing a shooting mate who with a Benelli M1 was a very successful hunter and an amazing shot. Some things never change, Benelli is still the choice of gun for many hunters. No surprise then that we’ve jumped at an opportunity to run a bulk ‘sell-down’ promotion featuring the latest and most popular models in the Benelli M2 family! Four legendary Benelli guns are in the offer, the M2 Tungsten, M2 Max 5 camo, M2 Optifade camo, plus the ever-popular M2 Black/Synthetic.
The M2 also has the Crio Choke System for great patterns in a wide variety of hunting scenarios.

There’s no fluff in this promo, it’s a pure cash discount offer that we will never be able to repeat. How come? We doubled up an order, so this stock must be moved through. Our bad is your good! But once these particular guns are sold out this Autumn, prices will return to RRP. There’s never been a better time to get yourself a state of the art Benelli.
But first, let’s back the truck up. The Benelli semi-auto system started as a simple concept evolved by Bruno Civolani, a firearms designer from Bologna, who invented a revolutionary action. His design led to the creation of the Benelli, a shotgun that used a simple Inertia driven mechanism in place of the traditional gas-operated system found in most semi-automatic shotguns. Instead, the bolt provided all the movement needed, and this revolutionary design provided the fastest reloading action in the world and permitted the shooter to fire five rounds in less than a second. Inertia guns operate cleaner and are less prone to fouling from muck, water or gunpowder residue.

The M1 launched in 1986 quickly set a benchmark against which most other shotguns were measured. The transition to steel shotshells placed new demands on guns and Benelli embraced this as an opportunity to update and launch the M2, and by doing so, again lead the market. In 2004 the first M2s were released and the rest as they say is history! Since then more and more hunters have moved up to this legendary gun that can take the mud, the blood, the sweat and the tears. All the while looking great and shooting sweetly. Few shotguns have that mix of reliability and high-quality, especially in a hard-out duck gun. Walk into any maimai across the country and there’s likely to be a Benelli in it, if not there’ll be some sad looking hunters,
The Benelli M2 popularity in NZ is foremost as a duck hunting icon, however it’s the most popular choice with professionals controlling rabbits, hares and possums, and is the go-to for most helicopter operators targeting bigger game. It all comes back to reliability and simplicity adding up to one
Since its introduction, Benelli M2s have been continually refined, these days offering better exterior finish options that make them more functional and more climate resistant. The latest technology includes features for smoother operation and fast target acquisition like the Comfortec Stock with its softer recoil pad and interlocking synthetic chevrons which dampen recoil.

a wicked performer!
ever since the one and only Browning Auto-5 hit the market back in
I have always been a big Browning fan and I’ve had the pleasure to shoot multiple Browning shotgun models over the years here and on the other side of the world in all sorts of crazy conditions and let me tell you… Browning shotguns can happily take a beating and run with it.
Late last year I got the chance to test the much awaited new Maxus II Wicked Wing, a hugely improved and overhauled version of the old original Maxus. After a planned goose hunt turned into a flop, as they can very well do, I luckily stumbled across a fresh stubble paddock drilled in peas, and better yet, covered in pigeons. If you know me you know I love a good pigeon hunt! Perfect! I figured a busy day on pigeons will be a great opportunity to put plenty of rounds through the gun and experiment with a variety of different shotshells to get a good feel for how the gun handles light to heavy loads.
Pigeons being pigeons are tricky and not as silly as people think. Typically, the day started with them playing chicken over the decoys, fluttering at 10-15 meters. I started the morning risking light clay target loads, knowing that a brand-new gun can be a bit sticky with these but the Maxus II showed this wasn’t a problem what so-ever… the perfectly tuned Power Drive Gas System had the gun ejecting and loading like a well-oiled machine. Let me tell you, this Power Drive Gas System is SNAPPY fast and SILKY soft, and might I add, the quickest loading gas gun I have ever pulled the trigger on. The Lightening Trigger on the Maxus has the fastest lock time of any autoloader in its class. As the morning went on and the pigeons got a little cagier, I changed to using heavier lead loads for any birds further out. This was a great way to replicate the more drawn-out swinging shots you get on waterfowl and learn the realdeal feel and balance of the beast. The thing that really stood out the most to
composite stock can be trimmed and shimmed for cast, drop and length of pull, the rubber over-molding on stock and forearm gives extra grip and comfort for the worst of conditions, the fiber optic front sight and ivory mid-bead give quick target acquisition, plus it comes with three extended chokes that are styled off a goose leg-band (Full, Modified & Improved Cylinder). Then there’s the Oversize Bolt Handle and Bolt Release Button and a Soft-flex cheek pad for added shooting comfort. (It’s also offered in Black Synthetic.)
Guys and girls, if you’re in the market for a new shotgun that’s going to last you many hard-out years, one that won’t let you down, take my word for it and definitely check this gun out at your Hunting & Fishing New Zealand store. Do your due-diligence and I’ll be surprised if you don’t become the next Maxus II owner this coming season. I can assure you…
“Let me tell you, this Power Drive Gas System is SNAPPY fast and SILKY soft, and might I add the quickest loading gas gun I have ever pulled the trigger on. The Lightening Trigger on the Maxus has the fastest lock time of any autoloader in its class.”

a heritage of excellence
hunting & fishing nz, founder
Fishing New Zealand pushed for a partnership with Eley Hawke UK. Eley’s heritage of excellence in shotshell manufacture was one thing, but its success in producing high performing steel shotshells was even more important to us. Since then, things have only got better with Eley being snapped up by the giant corporate Maxam (munitions), which quickly invested in new
Eley’s attractive pricing is not because it’s ‘budget’ in terms of quality. It’s because we enjoy a manufacturer direct relationship, using our buying power to ship in bulk, even landing containers directly into both islands to minimise domestic freight costs. What this means to our customers is high-performance
It’s not just waterfowl hunters who benefit from our Eley relationship, but for those wanting pre-season clay target practice using their duck semi-autos. We’ve worked with Eley to produce a High Velocity version of Olympic Blues, a clay target option that will cycle most game semi-autos. Game semi-autos are designed for the heavy pressures of field ammo, and some are prone to ‘hangup’ with weak ammo, a total frustration for a day at the gun club. The pressure produced by Olympic Blues High Velocity is nearer to that of field ammo. Now hunters with fussy semi-autos, or competition shooters wanting a faster load,
Some background! Founded by two Eley brothers in 1828, Eley Hawk is a truly iconic brand with an extremely rich heritage. Proudly reflecting on a legacy almost 200 years in the making, Eley is highly respected worldwide as a manufacturer of the finest game and clay target cartridges. To prosper for almost two centuries, its obvious Eley has continually embraced innovation. In fact, Eley often pioneered new shotshell technology. Founding brother William Eley is described as ‘an inventive genius’, growing the business into one of the world’s largest ammunition manufacturers of the time. William masterminded a revolutionary percussion cap, but was later tragically killed in a factory explosion while experimenting further. Eley’s market leading legacy is again to the fore in today’s modern era, but this time as a direct result of the Maxam investment. Notable examples coming out of the new state of the art facilities at Sutton, Coldfield (UK), include eco-friendly options that have a minimal

– a light load with an awesome pattern. Perfect for O/U shotguns, lighter semi’s, and closer range hunting like evening
– amazing performance as the name suggests. I shoot Hyperspeed, front-loading the chamber and first shot out of the magazine, (but with 3” 36grm shells backing up). Great for twilight hunting when the shooting window is brief and a fast load helps.
VIP LIGHTNING STEEL – 3” Magnum, 32 (1640 fps) or 36grm (1450fps) – My personal recommendation for all round waterfowling! Stunning knock down
– VIP Eco ammo (wads that dissolve), and sub gauge steel.
– Select from ALPHAMAX 32, 36, 42 and 46grm field ammo. With shot sizes from #6 to BB’s and Buckshot, you can target rabbits, hares, possums, pigeons, (dry land) ducks, turkeys, geese, even wallabies and deer. Alternatively VIP GAME achieves perfection for upland game or (field) duck

by Dean Officernother waterfowl season is drawing near and I’m not sure about you, but I’m always excited to see the new range of motion decoys available to us. Opening weekend in my region is usually a great weekend to plan a BBQ as it’s dawned fine and clear with very little wind more often than not. So movement within your decoy spread is paramount for success, being able to replicate a content group of ducks, feeding, preening and splashing about goes a long way towards that natural look wary mallards are seeking. It could make the difference of them being in or out of range and presenting a shot.
This year’s selection of Avery GHG Finisher Series motion decoys will go along way towards providing success this season. The available in both a Mallard Drake feeder style decoy powered with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, a bilge pump sprays water directly onto the rear of the decoy in turn producing a feeding, rocking motion with plenty of splash. An extension tube on the pump exhaust can be removed to produce less splash on smaller ponds if desired. The pulse from the pump is intermittent so it produces an irregular wake and a natural look. The Canada Goose Spitter will make a highly visual confidence decoy on bigger ponds and waterways with its added size moving more water while rocking.
The Swimmer Mallard Drake attached. The pump, as with the spitter decoys, is a 750GPH pump and man does it move water! This decoy is propelled around your waterway

Iby andy tannock Hunting & Fishing Nz, foundern preparation for the coming gamebird hunting season I begin to increase my dog’s fitness with plenty of walks and I reinforce the basic commands, like signalling direction for a blind retrieve etc. Over summer I also ensure they get plenty of time in and around water. Some dogs, particularly young inexperienced ones, can be reluctant to enter water. Summer is the time to overcome this by wading or swimming with your dog, making water a fun and ‘normal’ environment to be in.
(ASD) Standard Dog Parka, the ASD Boaters Parka with back located hand grip enabling you to lift your dog into a boat or up a slippery bank, or the ultimate MoMarsh Vest, more expensive to start with but as you can adjust it as your dog grows, or adapt it for another dog, it is not only super warm, but very versatile and long lasting. All of these vests are constructed from buoyant waterproof materials giving your dog an extra element of floatation as well as protection from sharp objects and of course the
Heading into autumn, a big recommendation I have is to familiarise your dog with the wetland or location you’re going to hunt. This way, come opening day when there is so much action and excitement coming at your dog full noise, he or she will be comfortable in the surroundings. The familiarity of sights and smells will put them more at ease, confident to take on the multitude of challenges you in your own excitement, will expect of them. During the visits to mark-up or scrub-up my maimai I like to include my dog’s favourite training dummies, tossing them from the maimai to simulate the retrieves I’ll expect my my canine side-kick to be making. The dog learns entry and exit spots around the wetland, and just becomes more confident in the surroundings. If your hunting buddies have dogs, it’s a good idea to let the dogs socialise with each other. Again, you are eliminating a possible stressful or even aggressive situation that could ruin your opening morning. Even better, when there’ll be more than one dog doing the retrieving, is to toss dummies together with the other dogs. They get used to swimming with each other and hopefully not competing to be first to the same dummy (or duck), which is where having direction control or the ‘leave’ command instilled becomes very handy. Once sorted they will enjoy the teamwork that comes with working simultaneously. On a busy hunting day, you want to conserve their energy for multiple quick retrieves, so two or more dogs each retrieving different ducks is so important.
At Hunting & Fishing New Zealand, we import the specialised dog items you’ll need for training and keeping your dogs fit. These include the
Your gundog will give his or her all to retrieve your game, and you’ll want them to recover quickly and do it all again tomorrow. Dog whistles are great, they grab immediate attention and can be heard above wind and waves. Choosing a good high energy food for this time of year is something I do, but just as importantly, I make sure my dog is dry, warm and comfortable as well as being well fed, at the end of a hunt. To enhance that warmth and comfort, my dogs love their camo dog bed so it comes in the truck during the hunting season. And as a final compliment to your canine hunting buddy, you can’t go past the Styx Mill Oilskin Dog Coats for the recovery periods. Comfortable and warm, dogs really love them and they’re also a great looking accessory, perfect for those winter walks.
Top dog work can be the highlight of any hunt, to achieve this on a regular basis, what you put into your dogs in both training and gear, will reflect what you get out!

Smoked Duck Tacos
with Apple Slaw and Plum Cardamom Sauce
Peter Fowler – Hunting & Fishing NZ, Hutt Valleyººœœ º º W
ºººº ºº º ººº K recipe
Smoked Duck
Ingredients
1 whole duck - fresh is best but will work with a well thawed duck from the freezer.
Brine:
½ Cup brown sugar
¼ Cup salt
2 cloves garlic, crushed.
1 Tbsp crushed/minced ginger.
1.5 tsp chinese 5 Spice
500mls apple juice
500mls cold water
Instructions
1. With a paper towel ensure the duck skin is dried well. With a fork, pierce the skin all over.
2. In a large zip-lock bag or container with a lid mix brine ingredients together until salt and sugar have dissolved.
3. Add the duck to the brine and make sure it is submerged. Place in the fridge for 24-48 hours – turning the duck in the mixture from time to time to ensure even coverage.
4. Pre-heat smoker to 95°C. (Consider adding the water to a bowl in the smoker to keep the duck nice and moist.)
5. Remove duck from brine and pat dry before placing on smoker grill plate. Close the lid and cook for 4 hours or until the internal temperature of the thigh reads 74°C on an instant read meat thermometer.
6. Remove the duck from the heat and allow it to rest for 20 minutes.
7. Carve or pull the duck away from the carcass and serve in soft corn tacos, with apple slaw and drizzled with delicious plum cardamom sauce.
When cooking wild duck it really comes down to two options to ensure you don’t wind up with tough and gamey meat. First, searing and cooking rare to reduce how much the myoglobin can give meat a gamey taint. Or, slow cooking or smoking, packing in additional flavour profiles to help ease what some people perceive as “gamier” protein. This Smoked Duck Taco recipe employs two key processes that will help add those extra flavour layers as well as locking in much needed moistness. Brining flavours the duck and stops the meat from drying out during cooking. Low & slow smoking also helps retain moisture but adds more depth of flavour, so at this point any hint of “gaminess” is neutralised and you have yourself a crowdpleasing wild duck meal! Topped off with a refreshing Apple Slaw and Plum Cardamom sauce makes this an essential recipe to have up your sleeve this season.
Apple Slaw
Ingredients
1 granny smith apple
1 Tbsp squeezed lime juice
1 Cup shredded red cabbage
1 Cup shredded green cabbage
1 carrot (shredded)
1 spring onion or ½ red onion finely sliced.
½ Cup fresh coriander (roughly chopped)
3 Tbsp avocado oil
1 Tbsp red wine vinegar
2 Tbsp plain, unsweetened yogurt salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
1. In a large bowl combine the cabbage, carrot, cilantro and spring or red onion.
2. Cut the apple into thin strips and coat with the lime juice (this stops the apple from going brown)
3. Combine apple and lime juice in with the cabbage mix.
4. In a jar, shake together the avocado oil, red wine vinegar, yoghurt and salt and pepper.
5. Pour the dressing over the salad and toss until well combined.
6. Cover and refrigerate until ready to use.
Plum Cardamom Sauce
Ingredients
500 g plums (pitted with skin on)
25 g brown sugar
6 cardamom pods
½ tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp dried rosemary
15 ml orange juice
Squeezed orange peel.
1 & ½ T rye whiskey or dark rum
50-75 ml Water
Instructions
1. Quarter the plums, removing the pit and leaving the skins on as this adds to the tartness of the sauce.
2. Place cut plums with all listed ingredients, except the whiskey into a heavy-based saucepan.
3. Cook on a medium to low heat for 15-30 mins, gently mixing occasionally until the plums start to soften and appear mushy. (This might take longer depending on how ripe the fruit is.)
4. Once the fruit is softened, add contents of saucepan to a heavy-duty blender or food processor and blend well until mixture is well incorporated with a smooth consistency.
5. Pour blended mixture through a strainer or sieve, back into the pan and adjust the consistency by adding more water if required. The consistency should coat the back of a cool spoon thoroughly but not be too thick like jam.
6. Add the whiskey and cook on the lowest heat for a further 4-5 minutes.
7. Take the sauce off the heat and let it cool completely.
8. Sauce can be used right away but for the best flavour transfer the sauce into a sterilised jar and store in refrigerator for up to 3 weeks.
This sauce can be made well ahead of time but is best warmed prior to serving and can be used with other game meats or reduced further and used as an accompaniment to a cheese board.
It’s fair to say you blew us away with the amazing results of the 2023 Swamp Comp! It was huge. Collectively, participants removed a staggering 1898 stoats, 1116 ferrets, and 1381 weasels. That’s 4395 all up. There were also a good number of feral cats, hedgehogs, rats and even possums taken out as a by-kill bonus to the biodiversity of the areas protected.
Our pledge is to spread the net wider for the prize pool this year. In 2023 our awesome suppliers donated 298 prizes, but an amazing 394 keen hunters entered kills. For the first time nearly 100 participants missed out on a prize. Watch this space for the 2024 Swamp Comp! The Hunting & Fishing New Zealand website from August will list what we’ll hope to be our best prize pool ever. In the meantime, get out trapping and freezing tails, and store them until the counting time in November when Hunting & Fishing New Zealand stores are the drop off point for your kills.
drop-off points for entries, administering entries, draws and the shipping of the prizes. Now that this event is helping to protect a full cross section of the back country environments we and our customers hold dear, we think we can take the project to another level as part of our ‘sustainability’ ethos. Being part of what we believe is the greatest private initiative in the goal for NZ to be predator free by 2050, is as simple as getting out trapping stoats, ferrets and weasels. There is no entry fee.
For the team at Hunting & Fishing New Zealand, and every person who hunts, it’s important to demonstrate to the public with actions rather than words, that the hunting fraternity are driving a project that costs DOC nothing, yet delivers valued environmental outcomes.
The initial focus on protecting wetland habitats came about because we learned that predators were badly impacting gamebird nesting, and endangered fully protected wetland species were also taking a hit. These days the Swamp Comp has morphed into protecting many other habitats and we’re thrilled about this. It’s pointless eliminating predators from one area if they can move in from another. Hunting & Fishing New Zealand is the driving force behind the Swamp Comp, arranging prizes, promoting, being the
Mustelid predators, (stoats, ferrets and weasels) have been described as killing machines, so if those entered in the 2023 Swamp Comp were still running around, and made one ‘kill’ per day we can speculate over 1.6 million eggs, chicks or even nesting adults would have been taken out over a year.
Lastly keep looking for the supporter’s logo and choose the brands that get behind the Swamp Comp.
Congrats to the winner of our #swampcompphotocomp, Paula Griffen - https://www.instagram.com/collectionsbypaula/
Paula says “I used to be so against killing anything in nature. It really didn’t sit well with me.
After watching Fight For The Wild a couple of years ago, it really changed my perspective on how I see conservation in our country.
I developed a deeper understanding of what it means to protect our wildlife and to conserve nature for the future and for future generations.
The #swampcompphotocomp is on again for 2024!
Simply use the hashtag on Facebook or Instagram any time leading up to the November Swamp Comp deadline and you’re in the draw to win $250 worth of Hunting & Fishing NZ clothing!
The impact if we do nothing at all would be so detrimental that I felt called to join the Predator Free 2050 vision and play my part in what I believe to be true.
I have learnt so much about conservation, wildlife and my surroundings as I consciously rewild myself back to an untamed state of being.
Nature is a sublime storyteller and I have learnt my most profound lessons here. As I grow closer to nature and learn about more about our wildlife, I really do feel like they are our spiritual companions. They know a lot more than we think. I think co-existing with such amazing creatures is so cool!
I hope to share many cool stories and experiences on Instagram with wildlife I encounter!”
New Zealand is a country with many regions that can take the title of a “Sportsperson’s Paradise”, but one that regularly flies below the radar is the Wairarapa. With an abundance of access and available species the opportunities for outdoor pursuits are limitless and year-round. Here’s a quick peak behind the curtain that’s sure to get a few new trips planned to this adventurer’s playground.

FISHING AUTUMN
FRESHWATER - Daylight savings and handy rivers means you can get out for a fish after work with plenty of handy opportunities in the Wairarapa for both fly and spin fishing. The three main rivers are the Ruamahanga, Waingawa and Waiohine. Spotting and stalking fish is a popular method, as is the great evening dry fly fishing. Be prepared to undertake a few fly changes for selective feeding fish
The Wairarapa is one of the most underrated hunting regions in NZ. It encompasses the eastern parts of Rimutaka and Tararua Forest Parks, the south Wairarapa Coast, the plains, the eastern hill country and the northern districts to the Puketoi Range. This means many diverse hunting opportunities from farm edge country to the high tops with pretty much everything in between. Red deer are abundant throughout, and pockets of fallow deer are becoming more and more prevalent.
At 116,535 hectares the Tararua Forest Park is the largest conservation park in the North Island. Its main entrance from the Wairarapa is the Mount Holdsworth road end near Masterton. The Waiohine Gorge near Carterton is another popular gateway, particularly to the south eastern Tararua’s. This close proximity is perfect for those of us living in Masterton, Carterton or Greytown, as we can be hunting only 20 minutes after driving out the gate! The Featherston hunters could almost shoot deer out of their kitchen windows! (Not advisable unless one wants to avail oneself of his majesty’s free accommodation facilities). In the south, Aorangi Forest Park offers hunters a more isolated alternative with stunning coastal views and Fiordlandlike rugged terrain making this a true wilderness area.
gamebird
For waterfowl hunters Lake Wairarapa is a dream come true. This is the largest wetland system in the lower North Island and habitat for over 100 bird species, including large numbers of international migrants. Of particular interest are the abundant mallard, grey and shoveler ducks, while Black Swans can be resident in plague proportions. Canada goose numbers are controlled but still there for the dedicated hunter. Lake hunting can be particularly challenging, requiring specialist wading gear, large decoy spreads and above par duck calling to achieve results. Many of us prefer hunting the margins with just a handful of decoys and some good camo clothing. This mobile, simplistic style of hunting can be very rewarding, especially when strong winds encourage the ducks into the network of wetlands surrounding the lake. Much of these wetland areas particularly on the eastern side are well managed by Fish & Game and offer excellent opportunities for public hunting.
Whether visiting or a resident wanting to explore our own extraordinary backyard, at Hunting & Fishing Wairarapa we’ll be happy to find you the right gear and point you in the right direction!

Badlands Bino Caddies
Cate Lee HUNTING & FISHING NZ, Queenstown Brooke KimberRecently I have been trialling the new Orson Hopper 2 Pro Tent which is now my trusted shelter during hunting and fishing escapades across the scenic South Island. Navigating New Zealand’s unpredictable weather demands a tent that can withstand the elements, and the Ripstop Silnylon material, complemented by a waterproof PU3000mm fly and a PU5000mm-rated floor, positions this tent among the top choices in its price category.
Weighing a mere 2.05kg and boasting a remarkably compact pack-down size, the Hopper 2 Pro maximizes space in your backpack for additional hunting, fishing, and camping essentials. Despite its lightweight and compact design, this tent remains spacious for two occupants and features vestibules on both sides for extra gear storage.
Within the Orson range, The Hopper 2 Pro ($599.99) stands out as a welldesigned 2-person mid-range adventure tent option, offering specifications comparable to tents selling for almost twice this price. Whether considering pack size, weight, durability, or cost, the Hopper 2 Pro emerges as one of the market’s top-quality and budget-friendly tents.
Explore the Orson tent collection, which extends beyond the Hopper 2 Pro, with a variety of lightweight adventure hiking tents designed for the solo adventurer through to tents that will accommodate groups of three.
Badlands binocular caddies are an absolute must! They’re such a versatile accessory for not only keeping your binoculars safe and covered but also making them easily accessible, perfect even when wearing a pack. The new slim-line harness system means you can wear them underneath your pack harness straps with no issues or discomfort.
I’ve been using the Badlands caddie for several years as I like knowing my binoculars are safe and at the ready. There’s nothing like being in the open country while having a 75L pack loaded up on my back and knowing I can scan over likely country at any moment without having to dig through my pack to get at my binos.
Badlands feature an amazing magnetic-close system in both the new Bino X2 and Bino Mag2. It’s a super secure but very quiet open/close system for getting your binoculars out or tucking them away. Caddie fit is readily customised as the dual harness system links over your shoulders and under your arms with adjustability to fit firmly against your chest to stop any swaying, great for rock hopping etc.
Another feature is side-wing accessory attachment points which can hold additional pouches for essentials like rangefinders meaning the caddy can be customised to fit individual needs. Badlands have included a bow-hook underneath the pouch for bow-hunters! Both models feature elasticated safety cords for attaching to your binoculars, keeping them extra safe and secure. The Mag2 has an internal zip mesh pocket providing tough storage for items like extra ammo, spare batteries, or your headlamp etc. The X2 has a smaller zip pocket on the outside of the caddy. Colour options are Approach camo or ‘Mud’ (plain olive). Capacity is generous, with both models handling my Swarovski 10x42 EL Range binoculars with the extra size of the rangefinder under-fins fitting snuggly.

Leupold
BX-2 Alpine HD binoculars
The Leupold name is extremely well known and trusted around the world. In New Zealand Leupold has earned the reputation of having crystal clear optics, backed by an amazing warranty pledge.
A lot of hunters in NZ will remember the Leupold ‘Cascade’ binoculars which were very popular a few years back (my partner Simon still uses his). The Leupold BX-2 Alpine can be considered an upgrade on these and will definitely be in as much demand due to the mix of features and extremely good value for money.
Stoney Creek Switch Range
They’re light, durable and have a lot of great features - such as the generous field of view and multi coated lenses. They work well in low light situations and are extremely comfortable to hold. At Hunting & Fishing New Zealand we are also supplying them complete with a Leupold bino harness/caddy valued at $99.99, so this is a great package offer to top things off.
I’ve personally been using my 10x42 BX-2 Alpine’s for several trips now including a recent hunt which went into the late twilight before we got onto game. Well after the sun had gone down, my Alpine’s really came into their own when needed for spotting goats and pigs deep down in the dark valley floor. It goes without saying they are also great in the big wide open tussock country that we have here in Central Otago where seeing game before it sees you is paramount to success.
Lastly, I find the Lifetime Warranty brings great peace of mind, which is so important when purchasing optics.

It’s colder on the ridgeline, and the sweat from the hill climb starts to chill. Time to put that warmth layer back on…sound familiar?
Stoney Creek have released a new range of technical mid layers, purpose built for active hunting which demands consistent temperature regulation. The Switch Range is designed as a no nonsense, dependable, light mid layer to tackle everything that New Zealand hunting can throw at it. The EXO CORE fabric has a super tight weave making it air permeable and wind resistant, while the grid fleece inner traps warmth. The 2-way stretch means it can be worn as a low-profile garment that allows full movement in tight country, so great for bush hunting and for layering under a waterproof shell. Although your Switch layer is not a waterproof shell itself, it is DWR coated to help shed water if you get caught out in a shower and to assist in its quick drying performance. Freeze drying retains natural vitamins and minerals due to the low temperatures used in the process. Check out our instore displays and create a menu with a mix of variety and favourites for your next trip. There is nothing more morale boosting than a hot meal if energy levels are drained due to a tough day or dodgy weather. Weighing in at no more than 175g for the regular option, and packing down flat, the Back Country Cuisines are essential for those who are confined by pack weight and space. But you probably know all this already and to you a selection of Back Country Cuisine is part of your trip essentials. Great news is we’ve again negotiated our popular deal of ‘FOUR PACKS FOR THE PRICE OF THREE’ offer. So its the perfect time to stock up with a few spares tucked away at home in case of power cuts or weather events. Offer closes 5th May 2024.
Randy Newberg DTS
Gerber, a household name amongst hunters and outdoor folk with its hardearned reputation as a true workhorse in the knife market. Hunting & Fishing New Zealand are proud to be committed outlets for a wide variety of Gerber knives and tools. This year Gerber has done it again and we’re excited to be launching three new innovative items into to the range.
Randy Newberg is a legendary American elk hunter who has designed this knife with dual blades including the clever tendon tool which helps you make the tougher cuts that would otherwise destroy the edge on your conventional knife. 440C blades, Cordura carry pouch plus reflective handle strip aids location in the dark.
Randy Newberg EBS
The interchangeable blade knife system that has it all. Supplied with three different 440C stainless steel blades, each are specifically designed for the various different processes involved with skinning, boning and processing deer. The blades are not disposable and with normal care they will last for years, and they nest together along with the handle into a neat wee carry box you stow in your day pack.
Dual Force Pro
The tough jobs just got easier with Gerber’s plier jaw system. What a beaut! It has twelve tools, butterfly opening, locking tools and a good quality sheath. The two position slip lock jaws are great for those stubborn bolts and nuts.
These are all great additions to the Gerber family, so if you appreciate innovation and can see how one of these will make jobs easier, come check them out at your nearest Hunting & Fishing New Zealand store where we are more than happy to help!

Winchester ammo was super-X, becoming Power Point
iconic ammo rebranded
HUNT WISE
tested and where possible, advanced. Not long-ago Winchester changed the bullet profile slightly to improve accuracy and expansion, and while subtle, this
who developed the concept of Super-X centrefire ammo. Olin theorised that progressive-burning powders could produce greater velocities and more energy without creating pressure spikes. This stood Super X apart at the time and began the first chapter in the 100-year success story that continues today.
Fast forward to 2024 and Winchester celebrate the success of the Power Point projectile by honouring it in the Super-X rebrand. As said, only the name has changed. All the components are still manufactured to exacting standards by Winchester itself, apart from the powder which is these days commissioned to Hodgdon. So what’s so great about the bullet performance? Experts state it achieves a very high impact, so with correct placement is unlikely to pass through an animal without inflicting a fatal wound cavity. Tests and history show it is particularly well suited to deer size game, as it is designed to mushroom to twice its original diameter on impact and retain a healthy percentage of its original weight for penetration. Therefore, a trusted choice for more quick humane kills. To achieve this performance, the bullet features a soft lead tip which on impact, is forced toward the rear of the bullet creating that trademark mushroom. Its notched jacket helps achieve a very uniform level of expansion, and while in flight maintaining a high degree of accuracy. Some of the ammo-snobs may refer to Power Point as a more ‘standard’ hunting bullet that drops out in performance beyond 300m, but as 99% of deer are shot closer than this, those critics can’t argue Power Point’s proven all-round performance. In fact it will upstage some of the way more expensive ammo in specific hunting
Availability and value are other key considerations with ammo choice. Nothing is more frustrating than sighting your rifle in with a load that is hard to top up on. Power Point (Super-X) can be considered a ‘bread and butter’ load, certainly stocked consistently in our stores nationwide when international supply allows. For extra value this roar, Hunting & Fishing New Zealand is again offering the most popular loads in their popular 3-packet deals. You can save on calibres like .243 (80gr & 100gr PSP), .270 (130gr & 150gr PP), .308 (150 & 180 PP), 7m-08 (140gr PP), and 7m Rem Mag (175gr PP). Apart from the saving you’ll make, 60 rounds is a healthy supply to have on hand for the occasional sightingin, plus many subsequent hunts.
So, if you are like me and many other hunters in that you rarely if ever attempt to shoot beyond 300m, and deer are your target species, the Power Point/Super-X accuracy, value, availability, combined with tried and true knockdown power make it an excellent choice. Just remember, whether you see it in its original Super-X packaging, or the new Power Point box, it’s the same ammo

Sighting in any HIKMICRO is a breeze, due to the 1 shot zero system. Simply line up your target, and fire. Then you realign back on the target and “freeze frame” the image, adjusting your cross hairs to where the bullet “actually went”. After saving that information, you should now be bang on!
One of the major changes for the THUNDER 2.0 is the super long life 10hr
When shooting with thermals, I also like the “Picture in Picture” technology, allowing a more zoomed option in the top of screen.
The below images demonstrate this, along with the various “black hot”, “fusion” and “white hot” colour pallets. In this image we were lucky enough to

Out of all the thermals I currently use, the CONDOR has to now be my favourite, not only because of the LRF, or the superior quality imaging (our test unit was the CQ50L 640 x 512) but its size is very comfortable in the hand. The compactness and ergonomic design, including LRF, still in a slim line handheld, is so easy to fit into a chest pocket etc which is fantastic.
These units are good for animal detection out to 2600m, making locating targets super easy. Once in close, animal identification can then be achieved
Little things also make a big difference, like the magnetised lens cover, that “holds” on the back of your hand grip and doesn’t flap around, or that every unit comes with two batteries, which is just another great service offering from the
So, as the landscape and advancements in technology changes, so too do our hunting habits. We are seeing a trend for customers seeking higher quality hand held thermals like the CONDOR, which can detect animals over 2km away, and then adding a night vision scope (like the ALPEX) for improved image clarity once under the 500yd range for actual shooting. With so much variation in options available, it is probably best to pop on down to your local Hunting & Fishing New Zealand specialist who can offer you the info you’ll need to select

by Grant Ashtonwas recently given the chance to trial Spypoints latest cellular trail camera, the Flex-S which is now available at Hunting & Fishing New Zealand. This camera has all the great functions of its predecessors but also has a built in rechargeable lithium battery and solar panel, meaning you could have months of uninterrupted battery supply and no need to return to change batteries. This has the added advantages of reducing fuel costs and leaving your hunting area undisturbed until you are ready to head there to fill the freezer or bag your trophy buck. One of the best things about this product was the ease of setup, other cellular cameras I have dealt with require purchasing NZ sim cards and adding fiddly settings into the camera itself. With the Spypoint Cellular models it is as simple as installing the Spypoint Trail Camera App onto your smartphone, making up a login, scanning (or typing in) the activation code inside your camera and picking a plan. Plans range from Free (up to 100 photos a month) to unlimited at $15 a month US$, I am currently on the standard plan which offers 1000 photos a month at $10 US$ ($17 NZD) on a month-by-month basis. You can also save another 33% by purchasing your plans on an annual contract. Once I had the plan sorted all that is required is a good quality micro-SD card of 2 to 512GB at Class 10 (which needs to be formatted in the camera). From this point all settings for the camera can be done through the app and is extremely simple. I would suggest you do a good test of the unit at home to make sure you get all your settings correct and uploaded before taking it out to your hunting spot, as changing settings or finding your Micro SD card does not work hours from home and in little service area can be frustrating and expensive. I loved the fact that this camera already has a built in dual sim card meaning it will work on nearly any available network giving you far more chance of getting enough signal to get images out to you from these

what an unreal piece of kit. When I first got this sealer I tested it on an empty coke can at the office to see how powerful the vacuum was. The coke can didn’t stand a chance, the can was crushed in the vacuum seal bag through the sheer power of the vacuum pump on the sealer. From here I was so excited to try it on some fresh veni. Key features include the built in battery, making this unit fully portable. As well as the USB power source to charge - whether that’s your ute, laptop, solar powerbank, or standard USB wall adapter.
For those that don’t vacuum pack your food, you’re missing out on preserving the quality of your catch or the spoils from your hunt. The key to all good preserving is removing as much oxygen from the vacuum sleeve as possible to reduce food oxidation. The solution to removing air starts with a quality unit, then good quality bags through to a strong sealing machine to lock out the air and lock in the flavour. A big fear that’s prevented some people from not using a vacuum sealer is perhaps a misunderstanding that there is extra admin involved in processing your own food this way, however this unit is super simple and fast with no messy clean-ups!
Being fully portable is an absolute winner. It becomes the ultimate accessory at the campground or any other place where you have things fish or game to process and no power source. Imagine this at duck-shooting or on the boat. You’ve had some luck on the mallards, breasted them in the field when they’ve cooled down, then straight into the vacuum sealer out in the field. Or you come ashore with your fish already chilled on ice. Set up a filleting table somewhere appropriate, then pop fillets straight into the vacuum bags. Result, no mess at home meaning you can relax sooner after the trip. With nothing to attract flies at home you’ll also be keeping the family happy with the cleanup as simple as bringing the fish frames

our lucky winners of $5,000 each worth of fishing tackle!
A big congrats to our five lucky Hunting & Fishing New Zealand 25K Spring Tackle Top Up winners, each person took home a 5K fishing prize pack. You bought up, and got topped up this spring, and now you can hit the water with a load of new gear and be the envy of your fellow fishos! Thank you to everyone who entered and another big thanks to our fishing partners who teamed up with us on this one.
once a year the Yokohama Tackle Show rolls around in late January and is eagerly anticipated by the diehard fishing enthusiast, as the show sets the tone for the major tackle releases for 2024. This year did not disappoint with Daiwa announcing an all new ‘24 Certate Reel’.
The existing Certate had become the go-to reel for a number of the country’s top lure anglers and had earned a solid reputation through providing power, reliability and an unmatched silky-smooth durable drag system. Certate has been regarded as the ultimate weapon in a reel designed for battling big fish on light line.
It’s fair to say, the 24 Certate had a bit of work to do to one-up its predecessor, but I was suitably impressed to find genuine improvements on the previous model. The new AIRDRIVE design concept originally released in the ‘22 Daiwa Exist provides a smoother rotation reducing angler fatigue through a refined rotor design. Next for me is the improved support system for the pinion gear allowing for enhanced power transfer from the handle to the main gear. The new ATD Type-L drag system lightens the drag’s start up inertia allowing for an extremely smooth transition between no drag and the drag coming on, meaning less chance of popping knots on lighter line weights. These are just a few of the new improvements that form a significant list of technical upgrades that I found made a difference out in the field.
Now to the part that really matters, fishing the reel. Out on the water I found the reel light in hand, the body was extremely rigid meaning under load the reel felt solid. The drag was a real game changer for me, ATD Type-L did exactly what the tech sheet said, when hooked up on a fish, the transition from no drag to line exiting the reel was exceptional. I also see a real benefit to the freshwater guys targeting canal trout on light line with this new system. It gives you a huge amount of confidence that when fighting fish you will stay connected and in control. The reduced start up inertia also meant that you could comfortably fish the reel all day with little fatigue, a must have for the dedicated lure angler.
In conclusion the 24 Certate provides a meaningful upgrade from the 2019 Certate LT. If you are impressed with the current model, you’ll find a noticeable difference in the 24 Certate. Daiwa offer it in a size range from 2500, through 3000 to 4000 options. So, something for every angler targeting saltwater fish from shallow to medium depths, plus as mentioned, it would be the ultimate for trout or salmon.
Keep an eye out, by the time you’re reading this these should have just hit stores or be not be far away. The Daiwa 24 Certate is sure to uphold the reputation of one of NZ’s preferred premium spin reels and will be a stunning addition to your fishing arsenal.

ea lady in
by ellie mcvicarver since I was a kid I have had a passion for hunting, fishing, and diving. I love the experience of being ‘Out There Doing it’ and getting out on the water or doing the miles in hills with the added bonus of the mental reset it gives me.
When I head into the back country, I need to be sure that any of the kit I take with me is reliable, durable and has the ability to stand up to any conditions or task that may come my way. This is one of the reasons why I am a massive fan of my Lowa Lady III’s. Not only are they dependable and durable they are also the most comfortable boots I have worn and these are three factors that Lowa pride themselves on!
The full-length nylon stabiliser gives extra support that enables more confidence when tackling difficult and challenging terrain, such as scree slopes or steep guts in the scrub.
The Vibram soles and PU midsoles add comfort, grip and reliability when hunting or on a multiple day tramp. The load bearing 15kg + is a definite bonus though, I would even say is a necessity to get further into the back country comfortable and blister free. Not only this, but the Vibram outsole is re-soleable!
Now let’s talk about the Gore Tex and nubuck leather. Unlike traditional leather, nubuck is easier to wear-in meaning no blisters from the get-go. It is also a tough and wear resistant leather adding an extra layer of waterproofing to the boot on top of the lining. Gore Tex is the most waterproof and highly breathable material on the market, making it an exceptional lining for the Lady III GTX, keeping your feet dry all day. The breathability of the lining allows sweat to escape the boot whilst preventing water from entering, especially when you are walking through mud, wet tussock, or shallow creeks.
The X lacing stud and rolling eyelets are two of my favourite features of this boot. The X lacing stud allows you to lace the boot around a lug to prevent the tongue from sliding around to the side and underneath your gaiters, it also helps prevent pressure and blisters. This a fantastic feature because you don’t find yourself stopping all the time to adjust your boots, just lace them up and hit the bush! The roller eyelets not only allow for ease of lacing up when they are wet and cold but put less stress and friction on your laces meaning no broken laces halfway through your hunting trip.
With all that said, if you spend a lot of time in the outdoors and want to take your experience to the next level, having a pair of boots that fit correctly and are designed for women in mind can make all the difference.
The original cost of $699.99 was well worth the comfort and reliability these boots offer. But the great news is that the Lady III GTX has been dropped to a new everyday low price of an unbeatable $499.99!

Hunting & Fishing Nz, christchurchWe partner with the New Zealand Merino company, developers of ZQ merino, to bring you ethically sourced wool from annually accredited ZQ growers only.
In an exciting move that marks the beginning of a new era, Nelson Hunting & Fishing and Richmond Hunting & Fishing are set to close their doors in April 2024, coming together to create a unified shopping experience at our brand-new flagship store at the Nelson Junction.
Mike Darling, the Managing Director, expressed, “Our 'one store' strategy is aimed at elevating your customer experience. We're thrilled to co-locate with national and Australian brands at Nelson Junction, seizing an opportunity that aligns with our commitment to providing top-notch outdoor products and experiences.”
Acquired by Michael Darling and his brothers, David, Andrew, and Peter, in December 2017, both stores have thrived under their stewardship. The merger brings together two dynamic teams, uniting staff from both stores to work collaboratively at the new location. This move not only ensures continuity but also allows us to offer an even broader range of high-quality products and exceptional service.
This decision not only capitalises on a strategic location but also showcases our gratitude to the loyal customers who have supported us throughout the years. We're transitioning to a central hub, just 7km from Richmond and 5km from Nelson, within a high-profile home improvement & lifestyle precinct anchored by Mitre 10 Mega Nelson.
Richmond Hunting & Fishing, established in 2014, is celebrating its 10th year in the Richmond CBD, while Nelson Hunting & Fishing was established over 30 years ago in 1993 as ‘Tony Entwistle’s Hunting & Fishing’.
As we bid farewell to our individual stores, we're embracing a fresh chapter with optimism. Our history is a testament to our growth, and this merger is a testament to our commitment to evolving with the needs of our customers. We look forward to welcoming you to our new flagship store, where the spirit of adventure and outdoor enthusiasm will continue to thrive under one unified banner.
Our new store located at Nelson Junction is set to open its doors on April 18th 2024.

new ownership ...in good hands
t is said that when you purchase a business, you either choose a poorly performing operation and make big changes or find an outstanding operation and ensure its positive growth is maintained, I’m very pleased to say that my family’s acquisition of Queenstown Hunting &
not pass up. It simply ticked all the boxes.
After graduating from university, I went onto a 5-year management program with Toyota New Zealand, working at both the national head office and finishing up as a Toyota Business Manager in Canterbury. However, every spare moment I had I found myself out either chasing deer, duck shooting, fishing or competitive clay shooting. Turning my hobbies into a job has always been a goal, which lead me to make a career change into the firearms industry where I worked for Beretta New Zealand for 4 years. During that time, I came to understand and appreciate the Hunting & Fishing New Zealand business model, the brand itself and the simple fact that every store is family owned and operated.
Working on the wholesale side of the industry, I always knew that Queenstown Hunting & Fishing New Zealand was fantastically managed, had a great product range, but most importantly, a hard-working team that have a genuine passion for all things outdoors. So, when I was made aware that Mike Stent and Jack Russell were looking to sell, it was an opportunity I could
whitianga store update
Queenstown can only be described as an outdoor enthusiast’s dream. Within 20 minutes of the store, you can have a trout on the end of your line or be camping in amazing surroundings. Within an hour or two you can be in Fiordland diving for crays or chasing Southern Blue Fin Tuna, on the tops hunting deer, thar and chamois or out hiking some of the world’s best trails such as the Routeburn. Because of this, we carry a wide range of products to meet our local market as well as equipment for domestic and international tourists, all backed up by experts in-store who ensure that the customer gets the right product for their intended adventure. Complimenting our core range, we also stock brands such as Carhartt, Wild Kiwi Merino, Yeti, Stone Glacier, Blaser and Smartwool, ensuring our customers get the best selection possible. I’m pleased to say that the team remains unchanged, ensuring the knowledge and, more importantly, the relationships we have with our loyal customers are maintained. There will always be new opportunities for any business, but a clear strength for me is bringing in my knowledge of firearms, particularly competition shotguns, which rounds the store out to be a one stop shop. If you are in town, come in to see what we have on offer and meet
open day!
hilst presented with the amazing opportunity to bring a new Hunting & Fishing New Zealand store to the beautiful Whitianga, there were endless meetings and sleepless nights hustling to bring the dream to life. We were very lucky with all the helping hands from whanau and
5am on the day of opening we were met by local iwi Nga Te Hei to bless our business with a karakia/prayer, the sun then stunningly popped up over the ranges and the big day swings into full motion. BBQs and smokers are going hard from open to close, providing the customers with kai as they arrive. The place was absolutely humming and we were welcomed with open arms by the community here with the most popular word of the day being "WOW!".
Since opening the feedback has been amazing, and with vast local knowledge throughout our sharp team and large range of outdoors goodies
we are excited for the year ahead. If you find yourself in the area please come and visit. You will be welcomed with smiling faces and a beautiful store to look

Our Selection Explained - Terms and Conditions
The products listed in this catalogue represent what is on order at the time of printing and what we plan to have collectively available through Hunting & Fishing New Zealand® stores nationwide with reserve supplies available from our importers where possible. We have ordered what we believe will be sufficient stock to last us 2 months from the date of publication. Specials and close-out deals however are limited by stock availability. Hunting & Fishing New Zealand® will not be responsible for lack of stock through supplier problems. We strive to print correct colours and images but cannot guarantee that they will always be a 100% correct representation of the products advertised. The climatic and geographic diversity of New Zealand makes stocking everything in each store impractical, however each store does carry as full a range as is practical and financially possible. If you want something from this catalogue and it’s not available at your local store, then we will
leave no stone unturned getting it from our extensive store network with the goal of delivering it to you within 3-5 working days. During sales and special closeouts etc, we may not be able to supply your first choice, but you can be assured that we will always suggest the closest alternative.
Pricing Policy - Trading Terms and Conditions
We pride ourselves on our buying power and if you ever see an item advertised for less elsewhere, then give us the chance to match or beat it, because our printed prices can go out of date. As always, we reserve the right to correct prices up or down if our costs change or if there is a misprint in this catalogue. Note too that while our advertised prices are current at the time of printing, the fluctuating dollar may make changes necessary this season. All savings indicated are off full retail price. We offer a variety of payment and finance options in our stores. To get approved for finance we can do the regular checks in-store, although, a convenient service we recommend is to get your pre-approval online before you even go shopping.
Then simply walk into your favourite Hunting & Fishing New Zealand store and select items within your shopping credit limit, process your pre-approval authority, then get “Out There Doing It”. Lending criteria, fees, terms and conditions apply and may vary between finance companies.
We've made it easy to find the product or brand you're looking for...
