About ten years ago I was offered a place to hunt on a large northern Waikato farm. The area I was given to shoot was about sixty acres of cut maize and full of Paradise ducks, great but I had little or no gear for parry shooting. When I change shooting environments to paddock or big river shooting where longer shots are the norm, I tend to lean towards the VIP Lightening rounds that come in either 32g 3” or the heavier 36g 3” loads which both work well for me targeting Mallard and Paradise Ducks, or Canada geese. eggs and their young were during nesting and brood rearing. In some areas where nesting habitat was poor, the recruitment of mallards was in the negative. DOC’s predator focus understandably is on the rarer indigenous forest species, so they were never going to target predators around wetlands, unless bittern or other threatened species resided there.

Meanwhile, in NZ we have around 40,000+ gamebird hunters. We figured if they understood the gravity of the problem, the hunting gene they possessed could be broadened to include targeting predators, especially at times of the year ground nesting birds are so vulnerable. Hunters have always been doers, not talkers when it comes to conservation, so we believed there could be a veritable army of volunteers with the smarts, enthusiasm, and motivation to out-wit even the most cunning stoat, ferret or weasel.

If we were going to design and run an event, we wanted it to have profile so that it attracted the public interest, and we wanted to see the participants rewarded in some way for all their hard efforts. We say every predator removed is a reward in itself, but we knew the event would have a higher profile if it also offered prizes. We reached out to the hunting supply industry, their amazing response has been rock solid support ever since with a prize pool that has averaged $30,000+ in recent years.

What does the future hold for the Swamp Comp? Well for starters its on again for 2023. If you haven’t participated as yet then make this the year. Just get out trapping stoats, ferrets or weasels, remove and freeze the tails when you catch them, then simply bring the tails into a Hunting & Fishing New Zealand store in November for counting. Each tail will give you a ‘ticket’ in the prize draws.

We approached a pond where hunters were maimai building, we knew they were there well before we flew over as we spotted their white faces at least 500m away. You might keep your head down but will the guy next to you? Hunting Blinds: Not every hunt takes place in a well camo’d maimai. A core rule of waterfowling is to be where the ducks want to be. This might be fresh floodwater, a crop, a riverbed where you’ve discovered a duck camp, or a random pond you’ve just accessed that is also full of ducks. They won’t hang around, so you need to be there set up at daylight tomorrow, and your hunting location must totally blend in. Here's where the arsenal may include an A-Frame blind, a layout blind, or even a pop-up blind depending on the cover height and type of game. Simms Tributary Waders

Another season has passed, and I still love this concept. As mentioned previously I have been wearing my American made, Gore-Tex Simms G4Z wader, but I have recently had the opportunity to try out the new Simms

The Tributary range has been around for several years now and has proven to be a winner as an introduction to Simms waders, or in fact an introduction to breathable waders full stop. For 2023 the Tributary is receiving an update on the success of the original, with an adjustment to the fit which will improve movement and durability, but also the addition of a new camouflage pattern.

The name that Simms has come up with for this camo pattern is a bit of a mouth full being ‘Regiment Camo Olive Drab’, but I found it a very good match for the varying areas I hunt. Concealment is a key component to any waterfowler’s gear in the field, and I have been one over the years that has said if I wear a camo jacket down to between my waist and knees what do I need camo waders for? Two reasons, firstly, a lot of the specific waterfowling jackets are now made as ‘wading jackets’ which means they are quite a lot shorter than traditional rainwear. This means they don’t end up in the water as easily when you are deep wading setting decoys and the likes, it also makes them a lot more comfortable when wearing them over waders. However, being considerably shorter means a lot more of your wader is exposed so having a camo wader aids in concealment, particularly if you get caught out of the blind. Secondly, mother nature will probably prove me wrong now, but the last few seasons have seen some very mild weather early

Proven training techniques are as important as good genetics to Sonya

when using the remote collar and it is the most humane and effective tool a handler has when training a working gundog. It can communicate precisely to the dog right and wrong using the absolute minimum pressure required. It takes time to learn how to use a remote collar effectively and humanely but the rewards of this effort are superb for both dog and handler.

Further explaining ‘pressure’: Pressure is anything the dog thinks is aversive and dislikes. An aversive stimulus makes a behaviour extinct. However it can also act as a motivator for other behaviours when the dog looks to avoid the pressure. If the dog knows what to do to achieve avoidance then that creates motivation for the required behaviour. This is why teaching first, then overlaying pressure on known commands is so important. Further motivation can be achieved using reward. The dog naturally wants to avoid the aversive (just like humans) and will gravitate to the things that are pleasant. By adding pressure to an incorrect behaviour and rewarding for a correct one, the dog learns to activate pleasure by carrying out the correct behaviour. This should also make the unwanted action extinct. When the desired action occurs, release of pressure alone will not be enough, there needs to be a reward, (food, praise or play) to help reinforce the wanted behaviour.

It has 10 stimulation settings and all the necessary functions of the pro transmitters, being Momentary, Continuous, Tone and Vibration. Operating one handed is easy and the stimulation control is able to be changed with thumb and forefinger. This combined with the intuitive clicks built into the control knob, allow stimulation settings to be changed, or, moving from one mode to another, without having to look down at the transmitter. It’s also expandable and can control 2 receivers, meaning you can buy an extra collar for your second dog and not have to keep swapping the receiver from dog to dog. The range of 800m is very good for the size of the unit and this will be more than adequate for most training applications. I tested distance on clear flat terrain and extended the collar out past 1000m with good results.

tempted to use the short probes, as for most dogs with even a moderate coat, the short probes will not always provide an efficient contact through the hair.

The strap with its excellent SS buckle has holes located very close together. This allows it to be fitted with small precise changes when tightening or loosening. When fitting the collar, you must ensure that the strap is not too loose or too tight. Too loose and the probes will not always connect with the dog’s skin, resulting in lack of stimulation when required. Too tight and it may reduce air intake causing fatigue. Nothing will create more confusion for the dog than variable stimulation caused by an ill fitted collar, so make sure you get this part right.

Overall the Garmin Delta SE is an excellent tool and when used as part of a complete training program will yield excellent results. It is robust, well priced and is a good starting place for those considering using this equipment in their dogs training program.

Goat Neck Chops? What’s this all about?

Goat meat? Goat is one of the most consumed proteins on the planet and is so underrated in NZ. Sure an old stinky Billy Goat is best to avoid but it is up to us hunters to reduce numbers to help protect our environment. The back steaks make incredible schnitzel and a young goat pot roast tastes like lamb.

I’m obsessed with the flavour and texture of neck meat, I would happily swap you a venison back steak for the neck. Sure, neck chops require a slow and low approach when it comes to cooking but this cut of meat is worth the wait.

Think about it this way, the more work a muscle group does, the more flavour potential it has due to its connective tissue, muscle groups and marrow (if bone in).

A slow cook stew made from fillet steak, would be bland and boring compared to a shoulder, hocks or the neck. The job for the fillet is to act as an internal pillow against the backbone of the animal, this is a muscle group that does very little work.

Ingredients - Serves 2

Medium neck chops

½ bulb garlic

½ t cinnamon

½ t worcestershire sauce

1T balsamic vinegar

1T seeded mustard

1t dried oregano or thyme

Large kumera and potatoes

Method

K2 carrots

1 large onion

Salt and pepper

Butter to cook

Foraged edible weeds (here I used purple clover, plantain and chickweed) or baby spinach with a dash of red wine vinegar and lemon.

• Use meat saw or cleaver to portion thick neck chops

• Mix cinnamon, Worcestershire, mustard, oregano and balsamic in bowl

• Salt and pepper both sides of neck chops and lightly coat in marinade mixture, cover and set aside for 20 min

Cast iron cooking, this is a must in life! Invest in top quality cast iron and you’ll have it for life, not only you but the generations to come. If budget is tight start with Campfire Dutch Ovens cast iron cookware. Amazing product for the price.

The natural flavours and heat retention is unbeatable and so incredibly versatile when cooking over an open fire. If cooking this way, simply regulate the temperature by spreading out the coals or completely take off the fire and it will continue cooking for hours off the heat source, with the lid on.

My golden rule with cast iron is simple, the heavier the cast iron, the longer it will retain heat off the fire or out of the oven.

This recipe takes time, but you can pre-cook for a couple of hours and set aside on a large wooden chopping block with the lid on. It will tick over for hours like this, when it’s dinner time just place back in the oven or fire to reheat.

• Scrub and cut potatoes, kumera and carrots

• Peel garlic and onion (chop in half)

• Heat cast iron pot with lid on over an open flame of camp fire or pre-heat in oven to 140-150 degrees celcius.

• In heated cast iron pot brown both sides of neck chops in butter

• Add in whole garlic cloves and onion

• Put lid on and place in oven or onto tripod stand if cooking on campfire. If you have temperature right you shouldn’t need to add water, but if worried about it drying out add 1/2 cup of water

• After 30 mins turn chops, add potatoes and carrots, 30mins later add kumera. Cast iron pots will self-baste but the more you take the lid off the more moisture will escape. Check every 20-30 minutes, if drying out add a little water

• After 2-3 hours the neck meat (depending on the chop size) should be falling off the bone

• Place wild greens in bowl, drizzle lemon juice and red wine vinegar over. Lightly mix.

• Plate chops and root vegetables carefully, baste chops with pan juice

• Add wild greens and smash it down with a smile…enjoy

For those unfamiliar with the Eliminator, this is its 5th generation, its popularity ensuring Burris keep upgrading it as technology allows. It can best be described as a range-finding ballistic scope which when setting up and sighting in, you programme your specific bullet ballistics into. The inbuilt rangefinder within the Eliminator will then instantly calculate the precise drop to the target and highlight with the illuminated dot – where the bullet will go. twist I paired it up with some 55gr factory rounds. Four shots to get on target and a tidy 20mm 3-shot group at 100 metres had me set ready for hunting.

With sighting-in complete it was straight out for a hunt. Marlborough boasts some great hunting opportunities with deer, pigs and especially goats present in good numbers. I wasn’t fussy about what I was looking for as I knew the .223Rem calibre could tackle all the potential opportunities. The new Predator 8 scopes certainly look and act the part, and with two models available, the 2-16x42 I tested, plus the 3-24x50, meaning they will cover most NZ hunting requirements from long distance shooting to bush hunting. As said, our mission was testing the 2-16x42, and given they are part of the Beretta family, we thought it would be particularly appropriate to pair it with a favourite rifle of mine in a brand that is also a key member of the Beretta family, namely my Sako, in 223.

We found the illumination was particularly valuable as our review firstly involved sitting out at dusk and continually watching and comparing the Steiner to a variety of other scopes as the light changed. I find that one of the better times to actually register scope variation is on the change of light. All can be “good” during the day, but the change of light is critical, and the Predator 8 was excellent in “holding light”. Steiner claim 92% light transmission, which is one of the best on the market.

As a butcher, I’m really keen to educate the public on utilising the whole animal, demonstrating different break down methods and cooking tips to help reduce wastage and maximise the yield of carcass of any animal!

The Zamberlan Saguaro GTX is your all terrain, all season high performance hunting boot. If you are looking for one boot to take you to the mountain summits and the valley floors, this is it! Handcrafted in Italy, there are a few key components that make it a winning boot. Firstly, it has an incredible 3 part Vibram sole. The outsole is pretty much ready to tackle anything you throw at it. The rigid midsole is absolutely key - not only does it help with stability while sidewalling through those tricky terrains, it also helps with pack load to boot, which reduces possible fatigue or injury. The mega robust full rubber rand is an absolute vital addition when hitting those alpine tops. Now, when I’m choosing a boot, an absolute must that I look for is the strength and structure of the back counter. In other boots, with heavy packs and on those big days, this is what has collapsed on me in the past, but on the Saguaros this is still going strong. There is also extra panelling stitched into the boot for extra support to the ankle and to help with abrasions. The GORE-TEX lining keeps your feet dry all day, while the Hydrobloc® Nubuck high-cut leather upper with PU reinforcements is waterproof and durable. The padded collar and tongue combined with the anatomical fit get you in the comfort zone with the boot molding to your foot. The Zamberlan Saguaro GTX is not as stiff as your normal mountaineering boot but hits a real sweet spot when it comes to flexibility and support.

We offer a variety of payment and finance options in our stores. To get approved for finance we can do the regular checks in-store, although, a convenient service we recommend is to get your pre-approval online before you even go shopping.

Then simply walk into your favourite Hunting & Fishing New Zealand store and select items within your shopping credit limit, process your pre-approval authority, then get “Out There Doing It”.
