Every item in this catalogue, has been through a selection process where quality and value for money are carefully scrutinized. These products can be categorized as ‘GOOD, better or best’ in their various fields.
GOOD - So, you can trust us that at the very least, all catalogue gear will be ‘good’. This especially applies to lower priced items and deals where the excellent value for money could actually re-classify them as ‘VERY good’.
BETTER - From ‘good’ the upgrade to ‘better’ may mean a higher-grade rod on a proven reel, an up spec’d reel on a popular rod, or a step up in the quality and function of both. Pricing and detail will provide a key to evaluating this. That said, we’ve gone a step further this spring by featuring our PRO-PICKS where appropriate members of our store staff share their own knowledge and advice on the higher quality gear, they use themselves. Look for the icon and check out more detail opposite.
BEST - We’ve highlighted examples of the absolute top tier tackle – look for the PREMIUM PICK logo. We get that an angler at the top of his or her game will prefer to pick and choose their own combinations of rod and reel. We’ve got you sorted and outlined how in the PREMIUM PICK explanation opposite.
OOK, so there’s a type of fishing you love, and you’re prepared to upgrade to better gear in order to enjoy it even more. Here’s where our pro-staff come in as they’re as passionate about the equipment they recommend as they are about the fish they catch – well almost! When they gather for a conference or share a boat trip out on the briny, the conversation will be staunch about the technical detail and the performance of certain rods and reels, and they certainly know their stuff. We wanted you to benefit from this professional tackle analysis as the choices these days can otherwise be quite mind blowing. Some of our more experienced team (store owners, staff, or brand ambassadors) have contributed the low-down on what makes a certain combo worth its price tag and how you the angler will benefit.
You’re accomplished, at the top of your game and you want that extra performance that comes through fishing with the best. The ‘one combo fits most’ thinking is not appropriate to those wanting to customize tackle to suit a particular style, location, or species. Our expert staff share your passion and are well qualified to work with you to put together the ultimate match-up of rod and reel. A major point of difference at Hunting & Fishing New Zealand is that our team are regularly out there doing it themselves, fishing in the same location or for the species you intend to target, and rest assured they like nothing better than to pass on that knowledge and experience to increase your own success. To help achieve this we’ve empowered our stores and staff to work with you individually on the models of rod and reels identified as PREMIUM PICKS to customize the ultimate options. This applies right through to pricing and our pledge here is to see you right with a deal that more than stacks up with anything else out there.
Simms G4 Pro Powerlock Boot
fresh water HITLIST HITLIST
Airflo Bandit Flyline
Hunting & Fishing NZ, Waikato
The new Simms G4 Pro Powerlock Boot from Simms Fishing Products has set a new standard in build quality and traction in the water. The G4 Pro features a new Powerlock system of interchangeable cleats. Normally once you put a cleat into a boot it can’t be removed, but unlike regular cleats, with Powerlock you can change between the aluminium and rubber versions with ease. My suggestion is the rubber cleats are best for long-distance walks like on a backcountry river where comfort and a soft ride
Where the aluminium cleat comes into its own is on fast slippery rivers like the Tongariro or Whakapapa, where wading can be dangerous and getting yourself safely to the right spot can make the difference between catching
In addition to the Powerlock system. The new G4 Pro boot features a rugged synthetic upper with a combination of a scratch resistant rubber rand, bulletproof woven panels, and attractive synthetic leather detailing. The G4 Pro offers robust ankle support with a redesigned heel fit that pulls your foot into place for added stability when it counts. The feature-packed boot is still light to wear at 1.8kg for the pair, especially when you consider they absorb minimal water due to their synthetic construction.
The Simms G4 Pro Powerlock boot comes in sizes 7 to 15 and retails with the proprietary Simms stud packages for $799.99.
When first released back in 2012 the original Airflo Bandit taper created a cult following with NZ anglers with its innovative camo tip design. The ever-faithful, classic olive-coloured line was taken to a new level, and both locally and nationwide anglers swore by it for chasing ultra-spooky backcountry fish.
This season, Airflo have continued to evolve the Bandit into its two premium fly line collections, the SuperFlo Ridge 2.0 and non-ridge SuperFlo. Both series utilise Airflo’s new SuperFlo microsphere buoyancy system, improved coating slickness and incredibly low memory for better handling and those crucial drag-free drifts. The Ridge 2.0 version boasts even further reduced friction at the guides and a larger surface area for unbeatable buoyancy.
The NZ crew at Manic Tackle Project worked directly with the designers at Airflo to create an updated taper profile for NZ conditions. Very much like the original Bandit but with a longer rear taper that allows you to aerialise more line, making it perfect for longer casts but also giving better control for pinpoint accuracy at distance. New is the front end of the fly line where a double belly has been created in the weight forward section, the rear belly is relatively standard, and the shorter front belly is slightly heavier. This achieves key things for New Zealand fly fishing; it loads the rod quicker on short casts preventing the need to upline the rod, it releases a ton of power at the end of the cast so the line rolls out, and doesn’t lose power in those critical last few feet that can result in a dump of fly line, leader and flies. It also has enough mass to turn over heavy nymphs, yarn indicators and bushy dry flies like cicadas. Lastly, this extra energy is perfect for knocking over the super long leaders we use in Canterbury, this is a critical issue with regular tapers where too much energy is lost before it gets to the long leader.

The new trout and salmon fishing season is almost here and, by our reckoning, there’s two small things you need to sort before you hit the river and string up your rod on October 1st.
Obviously, number one is your Fish & Game freshwater licence, you can’t do much without that. Number two, you’ll need a good pair of polarised sunnies, because without them you won’t be seeing much in the way of fish and that’s not the experience you waited all winter for now is it?
Well, it’s happy days for everyone who comes in-store to buy their adult or family full season freshwater licence this season because (while stocks last) you’ll receive a pair of Fish Hunter polarized sunglasses worth $39.99 absolutely free with your licence purchase.

women on the fly
when Leigh Johnson joined the Kapiti Fly Fishing Club in 2020, she found there were only two female club members. That’s when she decided to start Kapiti Women on The Fly, with a sole focus on getting more female club members. Leigh wanted other women to enjoy fly fishing and had two simple questions - why don’t they, and what’s stopping them?
The organic expansion from just Kapiti Women On The Fly to a wider reaching Women On The Fly group has come about due to the demand in the Wellington region and further afield. Women are looking for opportunities to learn from and enjoy the company of other female anglers.
The WoTF community is now a network of approx. 100 women from across Wellington and further afield. As a result, the Kapiti Fly Fishing Club’s female membership has increased, along with those of the Hutt Valley and Wellington clubs. Support has come from Fish & Game, Manic Tackle Project, Hunting & Fishing NZ Hutt Valley, and the Kapiti Fly Fishing Club.
Leigh’s mental health journey over the past decade means she knows there is a huge benefit to be gained from spending time on the water, regardless of whether she is catching fish or not. With a major mental health crisis in 2013 and subsequent extended recovery, having something like fly fishing to lose herself in keeps Leigh grounded and focused on many levels, and is just the mindfulness exercise the doctor ordered.
Fly fishing requires concentration and focus on the present moment and a connection with nature has been shown to reduce symptoms of anxiety, depression, and improve overall well-being. Because fly fishing involves engaged mental movement, such as wading, casting, and walking along riverbanks, engaging in this physical activity releases endorphins, which are known as "feel-good" hormones and also motivates Leigh to work on her strength and fitness.
The inaugural 2022 WoTF Weekend Workshop in Upper Hutt was a great success and attended by twenty eight participants from across the lower North Island. Most were beginner and novice fly fishers, along with a few experienced anglers and seven female presenters travelled from across the North Island to share their enthusiasm and expertise with a very keen audience during the Saturday workshop sessions.
On Sunday morning attendees were joined by KFFC & Hutt club members to fish the Hutt River and highlight keynote speaker Corina Jordan, CEO of Fish & Game NZ, was very well received - further demonstrating that we have some exceptional female outdoor leaders in a traditionally male occupied space.
Thanks to the support from Wellington Fish & Game, Manic Tackle Project, Hunting & Fishing NZ Hutt Valley, Pelorus Trust, Pub Charities, and fly fishing
clubs who donated funds, future events for WoTF are guaranteed with plenty of planning underway for what the next couple of years might look like.
The WoTF plan for 2023 is to continue activities and events to get more women on the river. This includes monthly casting sessions, on river events hosted by the clubs in the region, plus networking, support and education to a wider community of female fly fishing enthusiasts, new, experienced, and everywhere in between. The highlight event will be the 2023 Weekend Workshop to be held on 10th-12th November hosted at TALTAC in Turangi, so make sure to register your interest.
Women on the Fly NZ will continue to grow as long as there is a demand from women and the support of the wider fishing community and we can’t see any sign of that slowing down, especially with the drive and enthusiasm of Leigh and the team behind it.

new tech upgrade
by Kiyoshi Nakagawa Hunting & Fishing nz, North Shorethe Primal Rod Company ‘Raw’ and its saltwater brother, the ‘Mega’, were the original two series for the Primal brand which launched in 2018. Since its introduction five seasons ago, the Raw series has literally taken the world by storm and gained a following not just in New Zealand and Australia but has become one of the biggest-selling rods in Europe. The Mega on the other hand has become one of the go-to saltwater rods for Australasian anglers catching everything from kingfish, to black marlin, to bonefish.
New for this season Primal has updated the Raw and Mega series with a new technology called CCC, which stands for Compressed Carbon Chain technology that utilises an exterior carbon wrap on the blank that shrinks at a rapid rate during the curing process to create a denser rod wall. From a fishing perspective, this makes for a crisper rod with fewer vibrations throughout the cast and a much stronger construction - especially when it comes to lifting power required in saltwater fly fishing and impact resistance when casting heavy nymphs. The blanks still maintain the Amplified Nano Resin and Carbon Helical Core of the original models and carbon fibre is supplied by the Japanese company Toray, so in short no cost has been spared in their construction.
I first cast a prototype rod with the CCC technology two years ago with Rene Vaz, Primal’s rod designer. Over the past two years the team have taken their time to refine the technology, work on the action of every model, and design some stand-out componentry and tubes to really elevate the rods. Both series of rods are massive, Raw runs from #5 to #8 weight but also includes 9’6” and 10’0” models in #6 and #7 weights. The Mega runs from 9’ #6 through to #12 and also includes a couple of 8’ models which would be perfect for kayak anglers in NZ. In freshwater, the two most popular models will most certainly be the 9’ #5 and #6, both of these balance an easy loading tip and mid section with an incredibly powerful butt and rapid recovery. The result is a rod that is incredibly accurate and easy to cast when sight fishing, yet has the power to handle big casts and big fish when it matters.
The saltwater models are surprisingly not too stiff making them perfect for throwing heavy flies and a variety of fly lines. They’re also perfect for flats fishing where a quick cast is a good cast. That easy casting style is backed up by powerful butt sections for lifting fish or locking up on a big fish as it heads for structure.
The new CCC models have updated handle shapes, custom reel seats, high-quality SIC stripping guides and titanium-coated snake guides. All rods are 4pc and come in a new moulded ABS plastic rod tube which looks pretty sweet. The rods are available individually for $599.99 or as well-appointed combos offering a significant all up saving for $999.99. Like many, I’ve always been a fan of the Raw and Mega series, it's great to see their update being such a significant lift in everything from blank construction and action, to

Simms Freestone Boot + Wader Combo
affordable quality
by Mike Davis Hunting & Fishing nz, rotoruawhen it comes to quality and workmanship, Simms Fishing Products have always been considered the very pinnacle of technical fishing gear. High quality often comes at a premium price, but over time Simms have widened their range to incorporate reasonably priced products that remain true to this top standard.
For many years my go-to waders have always been the Simms G3 Guide manufactured from a Gore-Tex fabric. But these don’t fit everybody’s budget, so when it came to testing the new Simms Freestone wader and boots, I jumped at the opportunity to see firsthand what anglers could expect to get in terms of a Simms mid-priced line.
Constructed from high quality Japanese Toray Quadralam (4 layer) fabric and based off the industry leading G3 Guide wader design properties, the new Freestone has front and rear leg seams that enable wider leg articulation for increased durability and comfort. No worn inside leg seams! The great thing about Simms is they go into high detail to get the correct fit for virtually all anglers, which we all know is very important as there is normally very little stretch in breathable waders. The new Freestones come in 18 men’s and 10 different women’s sizes, so you will most certainly find the perfect fit. (Note: Hunting & Fishing NZ stores will stock the regular fit sizes but can order others in when required).
will greatly help when jumping from rock to rock on our riverbeds. The new sole is also compatible with all brands of studs if you were wanting to use them for extra grip.
Individually the waders are priced at $699.99 and the boots are $399.99 but for the ultimate value at our stores you can save virtually $100.00 by purchasing them as a combo for a package deal price of only $999.99.
This spring there is no need to get cold through sweat that can’t escape or to overheat in the old neoprene waders. To enjoy the freedom of movement and the lightness of breathable waders, get on down to your local Hunting & Fishing New Zealand store and get fitted into the new Simms Freestone waders and boots as I rate them amongst the best value for money wading products on the market.
The Freestone waders are a fantastic product for the likes of those cold days on the famed Tongariro River especially if wading deep, but you’ll also appreciate them even when fishing the edge when the wind blows and you need that ultimate windproof barrier. Another feature that suits smaller streams and summer fishing is that the top half can be rolled down meaning your Freestones can be used as waist waders for when you need to dump that heat.
Freestone wading boots have always been super durable but were extremely heavy, well not anymore. The boot upper is now manufactured from recycled polyurethane which makes the boots very light, yet still retains their tough exterior. This material won’t absorb and retain water, therefore it minimises the boots gaining weight when they’re wet. The sole of the Freestone boot has been redesigned and now has better flex and feel, which

sCeymar HD 2500 spin reel. It is also great value for money, with features you would expect from a reel double the price.
The upgrades from its predecessor (the Ceymar C-25) include an oversized main gear, marketed by Okuma as HDG-II. By increasing the size of the main gear it is much stronger and gives the reel a faster retrieval speed that with the gear stabilisation design will stay smoother for longer. Okuma has also added their EFR II even flow roller system with a DLC (Diamond-like Carbon) coating. This coating allows the fishing line to run seamlessly over the surface of the roller, preventing annoying line twist and increasing the overall life of the line. To compliment this the bail- wire is constructed from heavy duty solid aluminium.
Next, they have introduced Flite DriveTM by hollowing out the precision machine cut brass pinion gear to reduce the friction of the main shaft inside, making for a smoother handle winding experience.
With these upgrades, the Okuma Ceymar HD 2500 punches well above its weight, especially at the Hunting & Fishing NZ price of only $169.99.
Drag is another feature of the Ceymar HD reel. Drags exist so you can apply pressure to tire the fish, but at a level that is below what it would take for the fish to break the line or tear the hook out. The Ceymar HD has a multidisc drag system meaning the drag is both smooth and consistent. The reel body is corrosion resistant being constructed with graphite body and rotor.
seamless performance
its modest price that that the Ceymar has 7+1 ball bearings. The spool is lightweight machined aluminium, and the anti-reverse system is quick set with a roller bearing.
Hunting & Fishing New Zealand’s fishing selectors have matched the reel up with two different Okuma rod options. An Okuma 8’6” Tournament Concept rod - which I use for freshwater fishing in more open areas like the canals and the lake edges. I’ve also taken it to the local estuaries, targeting sea run trout and kahawai which are great fun to catch on such a light rod and reel combination. This combo is priced at $349.99.
The second Okuma rod is the 7’9” Tournament Concept rod. This is one of our most popular rods that we sell because of its freshwater fishing versatility. Used by many of our staff and customers for targeting trout and salmon throughout the South Island, this combo is priced at $329.99.
Both rods match up exceptionally with the Okuma Ceymar HD 2500 spin reel and will be a welcome addition to anyone’s fishing kit.
People often ask how the Okuma brand stacks up against Daiwa or Shimano. Okuma has been around since 1986, the same year Hunting & Fishing New Zealand was formed. When it comes to comparing apples with apples or features with features at a given price point, Okuma has earned a solid reputation for value for money.

The most famous and reliable spoon for Trout fishing. The perfect match for any serious fresh water angler.
one for the tackle box
by Simon McMillanhaving initially been one that said I have more than enough lures in my arsenal and I do not need any extra baits added to my collection, I now have my own tackle box dedicated to Daiwa Chinook and Crusader lures in my kit for lake and canal fishing - and a separate compartment in my salmon fishing bag just for Chinooks!
When these were first launched into the New Zealand market my kids were still quite young and I had them very much in the black and gold Toby stage of learning to cast and hook fish, therefore my start with Daiwa spoons was with the Crusader range, and in black and gold of course! The dish on the Crusader is far more pronounced than what you see on a majority of other metal spoons and this is what got my attention. The action is outstanding, far better than the other styles of lures I was using at the time. This is an advantage when fishing in still water, quiet backwaters or in the canals when the flows are low. The Crusader is available in 7, 10, 13 and 17gm weights, giving plenty of options and versatility in varying situations. The Fishbowl, at the very bottom end of the Tekapo canal, is an extremely popular area to fish and is renowned for producing plenty of fish, both trout and salmon. The 10gm Crusader has become my go-to lure here. Around the change of light using black and gold, but as the sun brightens the day moving to the Burpin colour often does the trick. At only 10gm it does pay to give this lure plenty of time to sink, then a steady retrieve back from the depths to allow the action of the Crusader to do all the work for you!
Being an avid salmon fisherman, anything with the name Chinook tends to get my attention! The Chinook does not have the same pronounced dish as the Crusader, but don’t let that fool you, this lure also has a magnificent
action but can be fished in more current than the Crusader. With weights of 10, 14, 17 and 21gm the Chinook covers river, lake and canal fishing, but with 17 and 21gm in the mix these are suited perfectly to sea run salmon fishing in our bigger braided rivers and also chasing kahawai around our river mouths. For sea run salmon I mostly fish the Rakaia River and regularly use 22gm Zed spinners in a clearing river, but once the flow drops a little and I require a lighter weight that’s when I move to a 17gm Chinook. I find them great upriver or around the tidal reaches, my two preferred colours are Chartreuse Yamame and Yamame Orange Belly. Both lures use UV paint, so they are really nice and bold in the water and create a good contrast with the silver back side. The one thing that I do with these lures when targeting salmon or kahawai is to change out the split rings and hooks to beef them up a bit for those tougher fish. Once again, I like the 10gm for lake and canal fishing, but will sometimes go up to 14gm if longer casts are required or trying to get deeper, faster - remembering the thinner blade will always work better if you can get away with it in a particular situation. As with the Crusader, in the Fishbowl let them sink deep and retrieve slowly, if switching out from the Crusader colours I like the Green Tiger or if night fishing then the lumo option and Zebra Glow works a treat for both canal and lake action. Another colour that I have lot of faith in is Green Gold Tiger as this works well in waterways with rainbow trout, and whilst it isn’t the biggest trout she has caught, it was the lure my youngest daughter picked out of my tackle box herself and used to catch her first trout unassisted!
Whether you are fishing the canals, a high-country lake, river mouth or chasing sea run salmon there definitely is a lure within the Crusader or Chinook range for you, and they get the results too!

Hunting & Fishing Nz, Christchurch“The dish on the Crusader is far more pronounced than what you see on a majority of other metal spoons and this is what got my attention. The action is outstanding, far better than the other styles of lures I was using at the time. This is an advantage when fishing in still water, quiet backwaters or in the canals when the flows are low.”
Light Game IC 150 Reel + Aird-x 702LFB Rod
the quality counts
by pat swift Pat Swift Fliesigging is a popular method for catching trout in both the Taupo and Rotorua Lakes, and one of my favourite forms of fishing.
Technology has played a large part in my successes in recent years, with spot lock motors and bathymetrical mapping sounders making locating the fish and staying on the marks a piece of cake. However, never underestimate the benefits of a high-quality rod and reel and how they play their part in more trout ending up in your landing net.
Recently I was joined by Mike Davis of Hunting & Fishing NZ, Rotorua to put Daiwa’s latest trout jigging combo through its paces. After a couple of weather cancellations, we met up at Gisborne Point boat ramp on Lake Rotoiti where a fine cloudless day with five to ten knots of southerly wind awaited us. Our plan was to start at the eastern end of Gisborne Point and work our way west to Ruato Bay. Trout were quickly spotted on the sounder and flies were dropped into 20 meters of water.
First impressions of the combo were one of familiarity, as I have been fishing the Aird- X 702LFB rod for the last season and love it. This rod has all
the features I look for in a trout jigging rod, including 2.13 meters (7 feet) in length and Fuji guides, as quality guides are a must when fishing fine braids. The tip is sensitive but handled the 40-to-60-gram sinkers we used in a depth of 20 to 30 meters, as well as the different wind conditions we encountered.
Trout jigging is a vertical technique and rods are best fished in a system where you hold them parallel to the water. Hence why there is a problem with longbutted rods intruding into the boat. The Aird-X is the perfect length, and we had no restrictions moving around the boat.
I have also been fishing with the previous model Daiwa Light Game ICV 150 H reels for several years and was keen to see what changes have been made.
This is a completely updated reel and the 10% narrower width and 20% weight reduction makes it a lot more comfortable to hold and wrap your hand around whilst playing a fish. The new ATD drag was super smooth on stubborn rainbows, and small size #10 flies were not a problem. The most beneficial reason I love this reel is the LCD counter usually only found on bigger reels. Multicolored braid and sounders help to keep track of where you are in the water column, but there is nothing like winding up to within 10cm of a fish just by simply looking at the screen on your reel. The last new feature is a built-in clicker that was silent on the drop and retrieve and was only audible whilst playing fish when line is being pulled off the reel. I can see this feature making the reel a great choice for trout down rigger fishers as well as trout jiggers. For the test I set this combo up like all my sets, the bottom of the spool is packed out with mono and then top shot with 100 meters of 10lb – PE .15 Daiwa J-Braid Grand X8 strand. The reel will hold 300m of the above braid with no backing and there is also a larger size model available for salt water slow jig anglers.
23 trout were netted on the day with many over 2.5kg. Mike landed the best fish – a fat 3kg hen. A memorable day was had with a great rod, reel, and company.

a Sustainable Approach
by Peter Franciswe are pretty spoilt as anglers in New Zealand. Our diverse marine life differs quite remarkably around the country, offering excellent fishing opportunities wherever we are heading. Among the various fishing techniques available, lure fishing stands out as an exhilarating and effective way to target some of our most sought-after species. From stickbaits for kingfish, to softbaits for snapper, microjigging on light tackle, sliders for workups, and the popular slow pitch jigging-anglers have a wide array of options to explore in their quest for a memorable fishing experience.
While lure fishing is an incredibly effective way to target different species, it also makes the release of fish far easier given they are almost always hooked in, or around the mouth. This is the result of the angler always being directly in touch with the lure and the hook essentially being set on impact rather than the fish swallowing a bait - which often has fatal consequences. Having to kill an undersized or undesired fish because it has swallowed a bait is disastrous to our fishery and an outcome we endeavour to avoid.
Lure fishing is a far more sustainable way to practice catch-and-release and thereby protect the marine environment and preserve fish populations for future generations. This realisation and ethos have grown in recent years and has spawned fast-growing fishing tournaments like the NZ Lure Masters, where fish are caught and released, with photos showing the length of fish against a measure board to record category winners. Quickly fading are the days where competitions award prizes for fish weight – especially average weight categories which openly encourage the killing of all fish and is simply unnecessary.
With over 800 anglers expected this year, the NZ Lure Masters tournament has quickly grown to one of the largest and most lucrative fishing competitions in the country where big prize offerings are awarded to the longest fish. Because results are recorded digitally, the competition is not limited to a geographic location and anglers from all over the country can compete for prizes in their local fish species categories. The one commonality throughout is that there is no bait involved. Everything is targeted with lures and the following is a quick brush over some of the different lures that’ll be used for targeting different species.
Stickbaits and poppers have gained popularity as go-to lures for targeting kingfish. These lures imitate injured baitfish, enticing these powerful predators. Kingfish are known for their aggressive nature, and the thrill of witnessing a pack of big greenbacks chasing down your lure, finishing in a ferocious surface strike is unmatched.
Softbaits, on the other hand, have revolutionised snapper fishing in New Zealand. These versatile lures mimic small baitfish or crustaceans, fooling snapper into thinking they have stumbled upon an easy meal. The realistic movements and lifelike appearance of softbaits make them irresistible to a
wide range of species and are a must-have in any anglers tackle box.
Microjigging has emerged as a highly successful technique for targeting a wide range of species. This method involves using small, often brightly coloured, tungsten jigs that imitate baitfish or squid. Microjigs are effective both in shallow waters and in deeper areas, making them a versatile option for anglers seeking a thrilling fishing experience. They get down fast and are less susceptible to currents given the light gear you generally use, this means you’re in the strike zone quicker, and for longer, which can only mean more fish to the net.
Sliders, specifically designed for targeting fish during workups, have become a star-performer in the tackle trade in recent years due to their ease and effectiveness. Sliders are so good that they can prove difficult to reach the bottom as literally everything wants to eat them on their way down. Mr Rodholder can fish these lures particularly well too, so it always pays to have one down even if you’re not actively fishing it.
For anglers looking to explore deeper waters, slow-pitch jigging provides an exciting and effective method. Slow-pitch jigs are designed to flutter seductively as they descend through the water column, imitating an injured or dying baitfish. These lures have proven highly successful for anglers targeting species such as snapper, kingfish, and hapuku - providing anglers with a challenging and rewarding fishing experience. They’re much easier on the body than mechanical or speed jigging too, so it’s not hard to commit to a full day of slow-pitch jigging.
So if you are interested in catching more fish, bigger fish, have more fun in doing so, and you are selective about the ones you choose to keep, pop into your local Hunting & Fishing NZ store and ask the fishing team what you need to give lure fishing a go.

Berkley Gulp Trout Nuggets
salt water HITLIST HITLIST
Dean Officer Hunting & Fishing NZ, Ashburton
Berkley is a company with more than 20 years of continuous research and development into fish feeding stimulates, with proven results. Over this time, they’ve performed a mind-boggling 50,000+ taste tests and have produced over 1,000 scent and flavour combinations. So it’s no surprise that one of our most popular baits for the Mackenzie Basin fisheries is the Berkley GULP! Trout Nuggets in Chunky Cheese “flavour” – a very happy discovery in all of this taste testing.
The Chunky Cheese colourway is not too dissimilar to the pellets fed to the farmed salmon, which is also a happy by-product for the larger fish that inhabit the canals, patiently waiting around the farms for the dinner gong to go off.
Presented for sale in a 30gm twist top pottle, these preformed nuggets in a floating formula are fortified with a powerful GULP! scent and they can be further moulded into the desired size and shape for a perfect presentation to the unsuspected submarines lurking in the glacier canal waters. Whether fished “walk the dog” style, or on a simple ledger rig, this bite-triggering putty gives the angler the unfair advantage to catch more fish.
Whilst a proven product in our local waters, there is no reason not to try this product on your waterways (always check your local fishing regulations regarding scented baits), and I suspect that the likes of perch, which are always great fun for the kids, will also love this scent-loaded product.
shimano Insulated Lifestyle Cooler Range
Colin Barlow Hunting & Fishing NZ, Warkworth
When Shimano makes a new product, they do it properly, and the new Shimano 21Ltr Lifestyle Cooler Bag is no exception. Sitting at the premium end of the market, this cooler bag has some of the heaviest insulation I have ever seen in a soft-sided bag. It has a heavy-duty TPU inner to prevent punctures, and a gasproof rubberised zip to ensure your ice stays on the inside - even if it tips over. They even have fitted four dedicated tie-down points to make sure you don’t lose your catch
Daiwa BaitJunkie Jig Heads
When it comes to the hooks we use while fishing it is crucially important that you have complete trust that the hook is going to hold and land that fish of a lifetime. This is especially true with jig heads for softbaiting as the shank tends to be longer and thinner than your normal recurve or circle-style hook.
Six months ago, Daiwa launched their new jig head specifically designed for their own BaitJunkie softbaits, but of course they will happily fit any brand of softbait on the market. What makes the BaitJunkie heads different to others are the two reverse keels on the ribbed shoulder of the hook shank. Sometimes when fish hit the bait hard but don’t stay attached it’s likely they have pulled the soft bait along the hook and twisted it. Obviously, once the softbait is offset nothing will bite and you need to re-centre the bait and start again.
With Bait Junkie Jig Heads virtually the softbait can’t get pulled off the hook. This feature simply means that your bait is always looking natural, therefore you are effectively fishing longer in the strike zone which will ultimately lead to more fish being hooked, and hopefully landed.
I have been absolutely rapt with how the BaitJunkie jig heads have performed. They come in a huge range of weights and sizes for saltwater and I have enjoyed them so much I have adopted their freshwater jig heads for chasing trout also.
Check out the new Daiwa BaitJunkie jig heads the next time you head out on the ocean or the lake - you may just secure that fish of a lifetime through having your softbait fishing properly, for longer.
(or drinks) overboard in the rough stuff.
At $299.99, this is certainly a high-end cooler, but in a bit of scientific backyard testing we threw a bag of Party Ice in the cooler and zipped it up. Three days later, with still around half of the ice frozen, the twenty two bottles we managed to fit inside were perfectly chilled for the weekendsomething you will be very hard-pressed to find in any other soft cooler on the market. The heavy construction of both bag and the carry straps, and the well thought out design of this bag sets it apart from any other soft side cooler out there.

a versatile combination
by Davidthe new upgraded models of Shimano Dialuna rod and Vanquish reels are now available. The previous models made up a truly epic softbait combination of rod and reel for those seeking a lightweight spin outfit without compromising on power. I’m pleased to say that Shimano have improved this already amazing combo.
I feel well qualified to comment on this as I have personally owned three of the previous generation Dialuna/Vanquish combos for around three years now. They’ve been my go-to sets covering a range of fishing options, being truly great to fish with. I’ve had some epic softbaiting sessions and they’ve proven time and again they can certainly handle the bigger fish.
The new 2023 Shimano Dialuna rod now incorporates an upgraded blank and carbon monocoque butt section that improves the lightness and sensitivity of the rod. Meanwhile, the 2023 Shimano Vanquish reel is a strong and extremely lightweight design, featuring a magnesium alloy body with Ci4 (carbon fibre) side plate, rotor and handle. The 2023 version has also been upgraded internally to feature a lot of the latest technology found in the flagship Stella FK reels, such as Infinity Drive and Infinity Xross for increased gear durability and rotational smoothness under load. The line management system now features Infinity loop and an anti-twist fin for better line lay to
aid casting and eliminate wind knots. Lastly, the new Duracross drag washer material is ten times more durable and smoother than ever before.
There are two choices of Dialuna rod I would recommend for soft baiting, the 7’6” and the 8’. It comes down to personal preference and we invite you to come on in and compare in-store. The Vanquish reel is available in three sizes, 2500S (shallow spool), C3000 (compact) and 4000.
I like nothing better than the extra feel and control you get when targeting bigger fish on high quality light gear, so couldn’t hold back when the first 2023 Vanquish/Dialuna deliveries arrived. With a writing deadline to meet, I shot out into the Hauraki Gulf where I managed to get in a couple of hours of ‘testing’. I chose the Dialuna 7’6” rod and Vanquish C3000 reel, a soft baiting combo that I think many anglers will rate as a simply awesome pairing. Based on my familiarity with the old combo I was immediately impressed, this was definitely a more refined feel. I caught and released several fish including a couple of snapper around 12lb with ease, so my lasting impression was that this is all you could hope for in a combo.

you little beauty!
by Mike Davis Hunting &spring is a wonderful time of the year to chase snapper with a wide variety of lure fishing techniques. When sea conditions are optimal, styles such as slow pitch jigginvg are very effective. But as the wind notoriously blows throughout the spring period, or the snapper are hard on the bottom feeding, fishing with sliding lures is hard to beat.
During late October and the beginning of November, when the snapper start moving into the gulf and the work-up fishing is at its best, fishing with small, compact, overhead reels has some huge advantages over spin setupsespecially when the fish are still in deeper water.
Over the last six months I have been lucky enough to be fishing with the Shimano Grappler BB 150HG low-profile baitcasting reel. The Grappler BB 150HG is a well-priced, light jigging machine that is perfect for those people starting out their lure fishing journey. The new Hagane body stiffens the frame and helps with rigidity and strength. Shimano X-Protect is then incorporated into the reel which helps with waterproofing, creating a more durable, very light, strong reel that is more robust than other baitcast reels. A smooth incremental drag that makes playing fish a delight, plus there's a high speed 7.2 gear ratio and power handle giving this small baitcaster lots of torque and power when playing fish and re-setting lures. Also, the fact that these are available in both right and left hand wind options means that there is a reel for every angler.
Even though the reel is small, it can still retrieve 72cm of line with every rotation of the handle. This means that when fish are spotted on the sounder at varying levels, especially when higher in the water column, it is easy to wind up to the correct depth.
I have been lucky enough to have fished this reel with a variety of rods, the Shimano Xitus Nibble Tip, Shimano Kaos 662 40-150grm Nibble Tip and the Shimano Engetsu BB 869 45-200grm acid wrap rods.
When it comes to fishing with Shimano Nibble Tip rods you will instantly see that the tip of the rod is very soft. This tip is designed to let the lure bounce and dance subtly as it is slowly retrieved just off the bottom. The fish come in, pick and nip at the slider’s soft seductive skirt and feel no resistance as the gentle rod tip does its thing, all while you feel everything through the carbon rod. They come back and hit the lure again and pretty much hook themselves. For the angler the art is to not strike the fish and let the rod do all the work for you.
I have been using the Shimano Rakuchan lures (interchangeable head) and a variety of Shimano Lucanus lures and it amazes me just how often fishing with these lures can save the day.
The Shimano Grappler BB 150HG is due to be released into the New Zealand market in August, so be sure to stop into your local Hunting & Fishing New Zealand store and check out these little beauties. They will be ranged on a variety of Shimano rods starting at $429.99 with the Xitus Pro Nibble Tip at $429.99, meaning a quality combo to suit mid-range budgets.

shimano Beastmaster 9000B reel
absolutely electric
shimano have been producing top-quality electric reels for many years and the new Beastmaster 9000B is a welcome upgrade to the 9000A model. The new colour screen feature is more user-friendly and easier to navigate than the 9000A. That’s important to a technophobe like myself.
This Shimano Beastmaster reel is an essential piece of kit for anglers deep dropping for hapuku, bluenose and bass. It’s also becoming popular for drone fishing from the beach. The main features worth mentioning are the new full-colour LCD display screen, 25kg of drag, huge spool that holds 900m of 80lb braid, and an impressive retrieval of 170m per min due to the unmatched power of the Beastmaster’s GigaMax brushless motor. The Beastmaster also features a number of programmable modes including automatically stopping at a set distance from the boat to prevent the swivel from hitting your rod tip, as well as programmable jigging
and retrieval modes. Finally, the Thermo Adjust Drag Control feature stops the drag from generating excess heat during the fight by automatically cutting the motor while the drag is releasing line.
I matched the test Beastmaster 9000B with a Shimano Xitus bent but rod and took them out deep dropping for a full work-out. Joining me on the trip were good mates, golfer Ryan Fox and Alastair Mair from Hunting & Fishing NZ, North Shore. We were exploring some new areas fishing in depths of 100220m targeting hapuku. I spotted some sign on the fish finder and we quickly dropped the lines. We managed to get four hapuku and then decided that was plenty of fish for three of us. We also caught a few gem fish as by-catch, these are always great smoked. The Beastmaster reel performed superbly as expected, easily handling the fish we caught. The biggest fish we hooked was sadly sharked 50m from the surface. It was a really good fish too and gave a hard scrap, pulling line for several moments before I was able to get it off the
I’ve owned the previous 9000A model for two years and it’s caught plenty of fish so it’s great to see that it's more than a facelift on the Shimano Beastmaster 9000B. I can strongly recommend this new model given my personal experience of these reels.
The Shimano Beastmaster 9000B is due to land late October and stores are taking pre-orders now.

ihave always had a bit of a soft spot for Sako firearms as my first ever deer was secured with my father’s open sighted Sako Finnbear .270 (a few decades ago!). Sako have continued to refine and lead the market ever since, so when the opportunity arose to testfire the all new Sako 90 range I jumped at the chance.
Three rifles arrived at the shop. The Sako 90 PEAK, Sako 90 ADVENTURE, and Sako 90 HUNTER along with a Steiner Predator 2-16 scope with H series rings. For the purpose of this exercise I was to testfire the Sako 90 PEAK, as much as I would have loved to have been able to do them all!
The immediate impression when I unpacked the PEAK was the weight and feel. At 2.6kg for the bare rifle it felt like a dream to handle. I placed it in the gun vice to fit the scope and it’s then I noticed the machined in picatinny interface which not only assists with out of the box accuracy but also simplifies the scope mounting procedure. I fitted the scope and ran it through a quick bore sight procedure before we hit the range to sight the package in.
It was chambered in .308, so based on where I wanted to take it for a hunt, I decided to have it zeroed at 200 meters. It’s not surprising that it was immediately accurate and very comfortable to shoot and with Sako’s Cold Hammer Forged barrel there wasn’t any need to break it in. The action is super smooth with the bolt locking lug pushing the round out of the magazine into the chamber and, once in place, the extractor claw is pushed into the groove of the casing. With a double plunger on the bolt face extraction and ejection is robust, which is something to be aware of if you collect your spent cases for reloading!
deadly accurate
Did I mention this was comfortable to shoot? The 3D meshed carbon stock has a textured coating providing a solid grip in all conditions and is UV protected. It is ergonomically designed having a minimal palm swell and slightly raised cheek support to enable correct eye level. The Sako 90 PEAK comes with a radial muzzle break but as certain hunting situations dictate a suppressor is a big advantage, this can be easily fitted.
We’re finally ready for the field test. I am comfortable with how this is set up and sighted in so ultimately the end result is up to me. I’ll walk into a location where the morning sun hits a large manuka face, settle in and begin glassing. In this location the shooting range is anything from 50-400 meters so, depending where an animal appears, this will be a good test.
Given the tight central North Island hunting conditions to the vast openness of the South Island this is a quality rifle that will appeal to a lot of hunters.
Sako trigger mechanism parts are manufactured to an extremely high tolerance meaning a very clean and crisp trigger operation with zero creep. There are five easily adjustable weights of pull settings and the trigger position can be adjusted for individual hand sizes. The safety system blocks the firing pin and locks both the trigger and the bolt handle and it has a bolt release which enables you to load or remove a cartridge while the safety is engaged.
Sako 90 Range“It was chambered in .308, so based on where I wanted to take it for a hunt, I decided to have it zeroed at 200 meters. It’s not surprising that it was immediately accurate and very comfortable to shoot and with Sako’s Cold Hammer Forged barrel there wasn’t any need to break it in.”

She’s a head turner alright. But there’s more to the Hilux SR5 Cruiser than sheer good looks. Add in the beefed up suspension and increased stopping power, courtesy of rear ventilated disc brakes, and it’s a complete package. Nice nice nice.
packed with value
when I was given the opportunity to testfire the Franchi Horizon Elite Strata rifle package I was stoked as I had been eyeing them up in our gun room for a while now and I was keen to see if it shoots as good as it looks. Designed as an entry-level package ideal for kiwi hunters, this rifle ticks the boxes for looks, durability, accuracy, and reliability.
The rifle came paired with the Burris Droptine 3-9x40 scope, featuring a “Ballistic Plex” reticle for quick, on the fly holdover adjustments. With the reticle's markings, estimating and compensating for a bullet’s drop on the long shots is easy. This is a combo deal Hunting & Fishing NZ sells at special pricing.
The lightweight Strata features a camo True Timber Techno polymer stock
and includes the Burris Droptine scope as mentioned, but also Burris Zee Rings and Burris Scope Bases. There are 7 calibres in the range with my test
During my range tests, the Franchi consistently punched 1” MOA groups on the targets. I was testing it with the Sako Powerhead Blade ammo in .308, and my rifle loved it straight out of the box. The Sako Powerhead Blade ammo is something special. It’s a lead-free option that delivers reliable performance when hunting. Its deep, hollow, cavity design allows for immediate expansion - mushrooming upon impact - ensuring effective energy transfer and stopping power. With its non-toxic, pure copper projectile, I don’t have to worry about lead fragments contaminating the hard-earned meat that I’m
The verdict? Yes at just $1699 for an Italian made rifle with a quality Burris scope, the Franchi Horizon Elite Strata rifle package is a real standout in its price class and is ideal for pretty much any kiwi hunter no matter what or where they hunt.

Hunting & Fishing Nz, Whakatane by Marin Hobson“Kiwis are tough on gear, and we hunt in all weather. The cerakote coating on the barrel and action is not just for looks. The coating protects from scuffing and corrosion, keeping maintenance simple, and reducing barrel flash without the demanding maintenance required of a blued barrel.”

by joe edlington j e wilds youtube channeli've done some awesome hunts this year filming for my 'Out There Doing It' show on my JE Wilds YouTube channel. If you’ve been following along, you will have seen the stag hunts have been a huge focus of mine this year. I also had a great time with friend Pedro De Ampuero, where we each got a nice old bull Tahr, one being 13.5 inches and the other a broomed off 14.5 year old bull. The channel is just shy of reaching 25 million views and continues to climb, so if you haven't yet seen my videos make sure you get onto youtube and search out 'JE Wilds Hunting'
Bergara B14 Wilderness Ridge Carbon
OK, first I'm going to let you know about a very cool, new rifle that you're going to love. It's the Bergara B14 Wilderness Ridge Carbon. This is a carbonbarreled rifle that is new to the Bergara lineup and is now available at Hunting & Fishing New Zealand stores. It’s packed full of modern and extremely practical features.
Let’s firstly talk about the main new feature of this rifle, it’s an obvious one - the carbon barrel. Carbon-fibre rifle barrels, are produced by turning down a steel rifle barrel into a mere shadow of its former self, wrapping it in carbon fibre, and bonding them both together. As a result of this design, there are a wide range of advantages you will get over the standard full-steel or fluted barrel because the inside portion of the barrel and bore is made from 410 stainless steel, and the exterior is made from layers of carbon fibre which gives increased rigidity, strength, and improves the overall harmonics. Better barrel harmonics means better shot accuracy, especially when shooting multiple rounds in quick succession. Carbon fibre barrels are also lighter in weight than standard steel or fluted barrels and also disperse heat a lot quicker, which leads to a longer barrel life. Bergara has built their reputation on creating world-class barrels due to their fine-tuned drilling, honing, and rifling processes that guarantee sub-MOA precision. These new carbon models are an awesome addition to their ever-expanding product lineup.
All Wilderness Series rifles come standard with Bergara's own supersmooth B-14 Action using Sniper Grey Cerakote finishes for advanced protection in extremely harsh weather - which we've definitely put to the test here in the rugged New Zealand alpine hunting conditions! This is a two-lug system with a sliding plate extractor and a coned bolt nose and breech to ensure smooth feeding and extraction. It’s also equipped with a hinged floor plate, which I personally love because there's no chance of accidentally leaving the magazine at home!
The weight of this rifle starts at only 2.9kg (6.4lbs) and is available in a range of popular kiwi calibres including 308 Win, 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5 PRC, and 300 Win Mag. The stock is a hand-painted American-style synthetic material with SoftTouch finish.
A scope question I get asked a lot:
“What other Leupold scopes do I personally recommend, that fit an affordable price point?”. The easy answer is Leupold’s VX-3HD scope. The VX-3HD delivers legendary performance and clarity in an incredibly tough yet lightweight package. It has Leupold’s proven waterproof, fogproof, and shockproof technology which uses advanced internal gasses and sealing methods that withstand extreme temperatures, elevation changes, and shocks - so the internals of the optics stay moisture-free and crystal clear for life. I would safely say that these are one of the more popular quality scope choices for NZ hunters due to the range of available models and value price points. Another great feature is that they are equipped with the CDS ZeroLock system which you normally find in the higher-end scopes. If you’re at all thinking of stretching the legs with your shooting distances then a custom dial-up turret, once calibrated and verified, takes all of the guesswork out of holdovers and clicks. This system also makes the process so much quicker, so you no longer have an animal walking back into the bush as you are still playing around with an app figuring out how many clicks you need to move. Customising your scope to your ammo is simple. Just complete the Leupold ballistic info chart supplied with your scope then go online or bring it in to one of Hunting & Fishing New Zealand’s stores, they send your info to Leupold and it won’t take long before you have a custom turret in your hot little hands. Having a turret customised to your ammo is a very cool feature and will take your longer-distance shooting to a new level.
So, to wrap things up, the next time you're at your local Hunting & Fishing New Zealand store make sure you check out the new carbon-barreled Bergara Wilderness Ridge rifles and Leupold’s VX-3HD scopes. You’ll see me using mine a lot on the JE Wilds Hunting YouTube channel in the very near future.

gear up with burris
by Brooke Kimber Hunting & Fishing nz, CambridgeTwo 'state of the art' Burris optic options to take the guess work out, and up the success rate this spring.
Burris Veracity PH 4-20x50mm scope
The Burris Veracity PH 4-20x50mm scope is a highly anticipated addition to the world of precision optics and one we’ve been quite excited about getting our hands on. I had this paired up with the Tikka Aspire .308 rifle and found it very easy to use and set up for taking into the field.
One of the standout features of the Veracity PH is its magnification range, which spans from 4x to 20x. This wide zoom range ensures versatility in various shooting scenarios, from up close and personal bush hunting to long-range alpine opportunities. The 50mm objective lens diameter allows for ample light transmission which results in a bright and clear picture even in low-light conditions.
This scope incorporates the new clickless digital turret along with a builtin heads up display. This covers custom ballistic information in yards, metres or MOA and a digital bubble level displays rifle cant (Lateral Alignment) on a Burris wind MOA FFP reticle. I found the ease of use with the clickless dial amazing both when sighting in the scope and also in the field while hunting with the Veracity PH. Bluetooth connectivity to the BurrisConnect mobile app is the data hub for this integration and once you have your ballistic info dialled in you’re good to go.
Durability is a key aspect of any quality optic and the Veracity PH excels in this area. It is constructed with a rugged single-piece tube which is shockproof. The scope is also nitrogen-filled and O-ring sealed which makes it both fogproof and waterproof, allowing shooters to confidently use it in various weather conditions. It is also covered by the Burris Forever Warranty, where they will repair or replace your optic if it is damaged or defective.
The Veracity PH features a side parallax adjustment and a fast-focus eyepiece which allows for quick and easy reticle focusing and parallax correction. These user-friendly adjustments enhance the overall shooting experience and help ensure precise aim at any distance.
The Burris Veracity PH 4-20x50mm scope impresses with its versatile magnification range, clear optics, effective reticle and durable construction. It is poised to become a top choice for those seeking a high-performance riflescope for hunting, competitive shooting and long-range precision.
Overall while using the Veracity PH Scope I thought that it is great value for $2399. Optical quality was good, even while having to sight it in at lower light conditions. Was great to have the Burris Signature LRF (Laser Range Finder)10x42 binoculars alongside to help with spotting and ranging a nice Fallow hind at 230m. All I needed to do was adjust the scope dial to the specified range in the heads-up display, and I was ready to shoot. I can see this being a great option for a wide cross section of Hunters throughout the country, so head on down to your local Hunting & Fishing Store to check it out!
Burris Signature LRF 10x42 Binoculars
The new Burris Signature LRF (Laser Range Finder)10x42 binoculars are a groundbreaking addition to the world of optics, offering exceptional performance, advanced features and unparalleled accuracy. With a compact design and a weight of just 1020g, these binoculars provide a lightweight and portable solution for hunters and outdoor enthusiasts alike.

The multi-coated lenses ensure optimal light transmission resulting in bright, vibrant visuals with enhanced contrast, ensuring you are able to make the most of those early morning and end of day primetime hunting moments.
While I was using the Burris LRF Binoculars in the range, I found them great for checking where the rifle was grouping, getting it sighted and ready to head out on the hill - looking for a Fallow hind for the freezer.
After using range finding binoculars, I just couldn’t go back to having two individual items. It’s just so much more practical being able to range the animal you have spotted, plus there are other adventures like being able to measure and minimize the distance of terrain when planning to stalk in on animals currently out of reach. The Laser range finder can accurately read out to a maximum distance of 2377m and with a battery life of 2000+ ranges it is a key bit of kit to have.
The ergonomic design of these binoculars ensures a comfortable grip, the rubber armour coating provides a secure and non-slip hold, even in wet or humid conditions. It is also covered by the Burris Forever Warranty, where they will repair or replace your optic if it is damaged or defective.
The Burris Signature LRF 10x42 binoculars combine cutting-edge technology, exceptional performance, and user-friendly features in a lightweight and compact package. HIGH PERFORMANCE DAY / NIGHT RIFLESCOPES
Pulsar digital night vision riflescopes
Since 2009, Pulsar have lead the digital night vision (DNV) market with advanced riflescopes that deliver exceptional image performance in low light, due to high sensitivity NIR (Near Infrared) optimised sensors, large aperture f 1.0 precision IR coated optics and Pulsar’s patented SumLight signal amplification.
Pulsar DNVs are bright light resistant.
Pulsar’s NIR riflescopes require little or no additional IR illumination after sunset or before sunrise, providing a usable image even in high humidity.
In total darkness, a supplied IR illuminator produces excellent image quality for most shooting purposes. Pulsar IR illuminators are available as 940nm ‘stealth’ or 850nm ‘long distance’ variants.
Digex C50 day/night
The Digex shares many features with the Thermion riflescope. Supplied with 850nm long distance IR illuminator.
Integrated laser rangefinder for accurate shot placement, supplied with Weaver style mount and 940nm IR illuminator.
The Digex C50 is Pulsar’s first digital colour day and night riflescope. In daylight, it produces a high definition colour image with exceptional low light performance due to SumLight light amplification.
A supplied quick-fit IR illuminator produces a clear monochrome image for shooting in total darkness.
The C50 has a unique iris diaphragm for focus free operation in daylight and maximum light transmission and precision focusing at night. It is also packed full of Pulsar’s usual features including video recording, multiple reticles and profiles.

SUSTAINABILITY
It’s a buzz word for sure, but if you’re going to talk the talk, you’ve got to walk the walk! At Hunting & Fishing New Zealand our playground is the outdoors, so for us the environment is top of mind and sustainability is part of our culture in everything from phasing out the use of plastic, to utilising more natural fibres in our clothing line or synthetics manufactured from recycled material. And that’s just the start, the Swamp Comp we facilitate has inspired our hunter customers to cull over 22,000 stoats, ferrets and weasels since it began in 2012, making it the most successful private predator control program we’re aware of. Many of our individual store owners are involved in projects that benefit regional environmental or recreational initiatives, and we sponsor events that enable more people to discover the outdoors for themselves, meaning they go on to enjoy a healthier lifestyle.
We’re also dedicated to play our part in sustaining healthy (managed) populations of valued introduced game and freshwater fish species. This often means protecting habitats where the outcome is to equally benefit our indigenous flora and fauna. Supporting the current DOC goat reduction focus is
an example of a joint venture where hunters can demonstrate their value in a project the wider community and environment will benefit from. These days there’s a challenge ahead to just sustain our ‘right’ to hunt and fish. With so many of our population now urban based, the public connection with our rural and back country heritage is quite weak. We outdoors enthusiasts must educate the public on the positive outcomes that evolve from time spent hunting, fishing, camping or just hiking in the outdoors. With this in mind, we didn’t hesitate to be involved in a recent ‘influencers’ workshop jointly hosted by Fish & Game and the Game Animal Council. The workshop was instigated following proposed Government legislative changes that failed to recognise the value New Zealanders place on fish and game species. Also attending were many of the leaders in outdoors media plus representation from organisations like the NZDA, Hunters for Conservation, guides, and other affected groups. The outcome of this meeting is a mandate for all these like-minded organisations to work together to educate the public on the positives that come from hunting and fishing, and to become a not so complacent silent majority in the future.

The National Wild Goat Hunting Competition
Enter now through till 26 November 2023!
Wild goats cause severe damage to Aotearoa NZ’s native vegetation and habitats, devouring native plants and any new seedlings. They have strong preferences and will eat out favoured species, such as broadleaf/pāpāuma and māhoe before moving onto less desirable plants. Damage caused by wild goats contributes to a loss of biodiversity and can prevent forest regeneration. These changes will threaten ecosystem function and have long term consequences for the health of the natural environment. Wild goats are also a problem for many private landowners, damaging and destroying fences, pasture, new trees, riparian plantings and are becoming increasingly widespread, with significant numbers in some places.
“DOC’s national biodiversity monitoring shows that the amount of faecal pellets left behind by goats, at monitored sites across public conservation land, almost doubled between 2013 and 2022”, says DOC’s Ben Reddiex, Director National Programmes. Understandably DOC is increasing wild goat control on public conservation land and has partnered with the New Zealand Deerstalkers Association (NZDA) to run a national wild goat hunting competition. “The competition provides an excellent opportunity to bring together hunters, farmers, and conservationists to work towards a common goal” says Ben.
Hunting & Fishing NZ is proud to be a founding sponsor of the National Wild Goat Hunting Competition and we believe there’s no question that managing feral goat numbers is essential for restoring and maintaining the health of our whenua and ngahere. Typically seen as a difficult to remove pest, our view is that wild goats are a valuable protein resource and another excellent reason to get into the hills on a new adventure. If we can symbiotically put food on the table, enjoy the outdoors, and promote hunter-led conservation, then everyone wins.
What you need to know
The competition is free to enter, and hunters will have over $50k worth of prizes up for grabs, kindly donated by the hunting/outdoor recreation sector including gear and vouchers from Hunting & Fishing New Zealand, Huntech clothing, a Traeger Ironwood Series grill & accessories, Garmin In Reach Minis, Backcountry Cuisine vouchers, Lowa Boots, Personal Locator Beacons and more.
NZDA will be running ‘Goat Competition Hubs’ where local competitors can attend venue open days to lodge their tails and score their horns, as well as this year’s Sika show. There will also be recording points across the country where competitors can enter tails only at DOC offices and visitor centres, and participating Hunting & Fishing stores*. More information on how to enter the competition can be found at www.doc.govt.nz/wild-goat-hunting-competition
There will be prizes and spot prizes locally, and every entry at a local competition will also count towards the national competition. National competition categories include:
• NZ Hunter Goat Pursuit: Win an unforgettable filmed wild goat hunting expedition with the NZ Hunter team. Enter a wild goat head or tail and tell us in two sentences or less why you should win.
• Got Your Goat: Enter a wild goat tail or head and go in the draw to win one of 9 epic spot prize packs – each worth approximately $1500. One chance to win per competitor.
• The Great Goat Roundup: The more wild goat tails you enter the more entries you get and the greater your chance of winning one of 9 prize packs – each worth approximately $1500.
• NZDA’s G.O.A.T Hunter: Highest scoring goat head nationwidebased on the Douglas score of goat head entries received at NZDA branches only. Prize worth $1,900.
Competitors will be able to hunt anywhere they have permission through landowner consent or the local authority by permit for public conservation land, forestry, farms, or regional council land. The competition provides an opportunity for hunters to build win-win relationships with local landowners.
The competition promotes safe, ethical, and humane hunting. Please follow the 7 rules of firearms safety and the Animal Welfare Act 1999.
* Participating Hunting & Fishing NZ stores: Whānganui, Whakatāne, Gisborne, Manawatu, Nelson, Richmond, Christchuch, Wairarapa, Queenstown, Dunedin, and Invercargill.

In the meantime, here’s a crowd favourite recipe supplied by Dariush and Rebecca at Cazador that you can make at home and is sure to make people see wild goat in a whole new light.
“I really enjoy cooking wild goat, it’s a versatile protein well suited to the coal grill, slow braises, and even charcuterie. There’s so much more to this meat than the classic curry! I especially appreciate the sustainability factor, and the variety of dishes it offers to work through the seasons”, says Dariush Lolaiy, chef and co-owner. www.cazador.co.nz

Braised goat shank and mushroom pappardelle
recipe
Ingredients Serves 6
5 cloves garlic, crushed 2 sprigs rosemary
4 goat shanks, on the bone
300g portobello mushrooms, sliced 400g shiitake mushrooms, sliced 200g oyster mushrooms, sliced 1 tbsp porcini powder or, if you can get them, 4 fresh porcini, sliced ½ bottle red wine
500ml veal stock (or dark chicken or beef stock)
Prep
5 stalks parsley, bruised sherry vinegar, to taste
ººº º º K
1 500g pack fresh or dry pappardelle pasta knob of unsalted butter wedge of good Parmesan cheese
1 tbsp capers
½ shallot, peeled and finely diced handful flat-leaf parsley, chopped handful black olives, pitted and quartered
Note: this recipe requires preparation 48 hours in advance of cooking
• Season the meat with salt and pepper and marinate it with 2 cloves crushed garlic and a sprig of rosemary for 48 hours ahead of cooking, cover and refrigerate.
For the goat
• Preheat the oven to 160ºC.
• Heat a little cooking fat in a heavy-based pan, add the mushrooms and the porcini powder. When the mushrooms have softened, add the wine and stock. Transfer to a large roasting tray, then add the remaining 3 cloves garlic and sprig of rosemary. Bruise the parsley stalks with the back of a knife and add to the roasting tray.
• Lay the shanks on mushrooms, garlic, herbs, cover with wine and stock and cover this roasting tray with baking paper and tin foil. Cook in the oven on 180 degrees for 2.5 hours.
• Remove the braise from the oven and discard the parsley stalks and the rosemary sprig. Leave the meat to cool in the braising liquid. Once the meat is cool enough to handle, carefully remove it from the bone – look out for small bone fragments.
• Transfer the mushrooms, garlic, herbs and sauce to a large pan, then add the meat. Season with salt, plenty of black pepper, and sherry vinegar if the sauce needs extra acidity.
• In salted boiling water, cook the pasta until it’s almost al dente. Add the pasta to the goat meat sauce, and toss with a knob of butter and a generous grating of Parmesan cheese. Keep tossing for a minute to thicken the sauce, then add the capers, shallot, flat-leaf parsley and olives.
To serve
Serve with extra grated Parmesan. You’ll probably have leftover sauce – it’ll keep for 5 days in the fridge.

GET SORTED FOR THE HUNT
Use your Farmlands Card online or in-store with Hunting & Fishing New Zealand to get a 2% rebate.
For those people that are lucky enough to either play, live or holiday in or around the Rotorua region you will know that we are truly blessed with the ability to hunt, fish and sustainably capture beautiful, delicious unprocessed wild food within minutes of our doorsteps.
Only 10 minutes from town you can be shooting deer, pigs, and catching trout. Within 30 minutes we have 13 different lakes all full of trout and only 40 minute’s drive to the coast for a sea fish or dive.
With an abundance of picturesque lakes and in particular, Lake Rotoiti which is the jewel in the fishing crown, it goes without saying trout fishing is a very popular pursuit in the area. The average sized fish in Rotoiti is around 2.5-2.7kg and as the season gets on they regularly get over 3kg where anglers target them on fly, jigs, softbaits, trolling, and harling.
The rainbows tend to be in excellent condition as the smelt population they feed on is very healthy so there’s no shortage of high-protein meals to help these fish get big, quickly. When it comes to picking the best fish to take home you want to choose the fattest, best-conditioned fish you can. These fish will have beautiful bright orange flesh and if you’re lucky enough to catch a trout that is feeding on koura the meat will be deep red in colour and almost salmon-like.
Once landed, the trout needs to go directly on ice. After your day’s fishing has ended hopefully the flesh of the fish has sufficiently cooled enough that the meat is not soft but firm to fillet, making the job of whoever is on filleting duty much easier.
Trout can be cooked in a number of ways - crumbed, battered, poached, fried, and of course, smoked. We tend to leave the smaller bulletshaped fish for the frying pan and smoke up the larger fish that are over 2.5kg.
I always prepare a brine for my fish which is made up of:
• 1 cup white sugar
• 1/2 cup of sea salt
• 1 litre of water
Just bring the water to a quick boil, add sugar and salt until dissolved and let cool before adding the trout fillets. You can play around with adding in different spices etc to the brine that will permeate into the flesh, but I like to keep it simple and let the fishes natural flavour do the heavy lifting. Same goes for my saltwater species too.
I leave the boneless fillets to soak in the brine overnight before preparing them for the Traeger grill in the morning. Once the fillets leave the brine they are patted dry with paper towels, brought back to room temperature and then brown sugar is applied liberally to the flesh. Sometimes I add maple syrup also depending on my tastes at the time.

Mike’s d trout tips Mike’s d trout tips Mike’s d
The Traeger is set to smoke which runs at 70 degrees so as to not cook the fish before the smoker does its job, and I tend to fill it up by putting in up to six sides of fish in at a time. The cooking time will vary slightly depending on the ambient air temperature but smoking a batch generally takes around 3 1/2 hours. Sometimes I may just up the temp for the last half hour of the smoke just to add a bit more colour and finish to the fillets.
I also like to mix up my Traeger pellets that I use and often go for apple or cherry as they’re fairly sweet, or if you are using the fish as an ingredient in a bigger recipe then go lighter on the sugar and run a less sweet pellet to accentuate the fish flavour.
Once out of the Traeger, the fillets are left to sit and return to air temperature when the full flavour of the fish, seasoning, and smoke will be at its best. The fillets are then vacuum packed and will last for weeks and will be as good as when they first went in.
Not everyone owns a Traeger but you can adapt the preparation to suit your own smoker. Many people use the popular stainless steel Kilwell smokers that are NZ made. They come supplied with Manuka sawdust which you sprinkle lightly across the base tray of the smoker. Heating is by way of two small meths burners you light below the smoker tray. Your fish is placed skin down on two racks within the smoker and the lid seals the smoke in. Prepare your fish the same way or as a minimum, baste it with a mixture of sea salt and brown sugar (add salt and pepper to taste), before smoking its best to leave it in the fridge overnight if you can wait that long! This is a hot smoke method, so it literally cooks the fish in 30-35 minutes and applies a great smokey flavour. Perfect for finger food or a plated dish.
There is nothing more satisfying than getting out and catching your own fish, dispatching it humanly, taking the utmost care of it through to smoking or cooking, we urge you to give it a go! The results are superb and your family or mates will love you for it when they savour your hardearned smoked trout with cream-cheese and crackers!

Rab Ascent Pro 600 Sleeping Bag & Klymit Insulated
the ultimate in comfort
by Rebecca Munro Hunting & Fishing nz, Invercargillso off I went to Stewart Island, bound for Masons Bay to see what it had instore and for this journey I got the opportunity to try out the Rab Ascent Pro 600 Sleeping Bag, along with the Klymit Insulated Static V Mat.
The Rab Ascent Pro 600 sleeping bag includes many great features to achieve its sleep Rab Sleep Limit Comfort Rating of -8degrees. (EN-13537-2012) Not bad for a bag rated as 3-season! Its lightweight at just 1190 grams, and is constructed with a wind and water-resistant Pertex Quantum Pro outer and features Hydrophobic duck down insulation. This in turn copes extremely well with condensation and damp conditions.
The construction design is well thought out with baffles that are stacked neatly together for maximising warmth all over, along with a wide ‘mummy’ design to allow for extra layers to be worn inside – which I didn’t find I required at all as the sleeping bag was so cozy. It also has a convenient zip pocket inside, located by the shoulders for handy storage for items you might need in the night like your headlamp. It also features an angled foot box design for the ultimate comfortable sleeping position. The three-dimensional shaped neck collar seals in extra heat, and the left and right bag zip options means for partners these bags can be zipped together for a twin bed sleeping arrangement in the backcountry! By the way the zips are quality YKK for years of untroubled use.
“Its lightweight at just 1190 grams, and is constructed with a wind and waterresistant Pertex Quantum Pro outer and features Hydrophobic duck down insulation. This in turn copes extremely well with condensation and damp conditions.”
Great news this spring is that this bag is on Special at Hunting & Fishing New Zealand, at just $649.99, down from $799.99. Please note that this pricing applies to the regular model, Rab bags are also at reduced pricing, see advert opposite.
Along with the Rab Ascent Pro 600 Sleeping Bag, I tested out the Klymit Insulated Static V Mat. It has a toasty Klymit R-value rating of 4.4, is also extremely light weight at only 680 grams, and is a convenient size at 183x58 cm and 6cm in thickness. This means that it fits away perfectly into a stuff bag and packs down nice and small, ideal for when you need to pack light. It retains heat by incorporating Klymalite™ lofted synthetic insulation and a raised V chamber, which combine to create maximum comfort. The sleeping mat also features side railing to ensure you stay on during the night and don’t move around.
As we don’t take a pump whilst tramping, I simply inflated this up by mouth. I found this was convenient and it didn’t take long at all, with Klymit stating it inflates in just 10-15 breaths. It was also extremely easy to deflate and roll back up. Overall, a very satisfactory night’s sleep in the tent was had - after our kiwi spotting and whitetail success!
For spring we have reduced this mat from $259.99 to $199.99 through till October 31. Perfect timing for the tenting or fly camping opportunities ahead!
Warm and spacious, the Ascent Pro sleeping bags have a generous wide fit with space to wear extra, bulkier layers inside if the temperature suddenly drops, ensuring a comfortable night’s sleep for the weary mountain explorer. With a Pertex® Quantum Pro wind and water-resistant outer and hydrophobic duck down, they cope well with wind, condensation, and damp conditions, ideal for an exposed bivi ledge. Built with trapezoid shaped, boxwall baffles that stack neatly together, the down inside is encouraged to fully loft, maximising insulation and reducing the appearance of cold spots. Hand-filled in the UK, all our down bags benefit from never having had their down compressed before use, maintaining the down’s loft and warmth.

GARMIN – PROUD SUPPORTERS OF NEW ZEALAND LAND SEARCH & RESCUE
New Zealand Land Search & Rescue is extremely proud to be associated with such an esteemed company like Garmin. New Zealand Land Search and Rescue has seen the real value in supporting its 3,500 volunteers, who are part of 63 different Groups. Garmin has provided national connections for Land Search & Rescue Groups, devices, and vital technical support, with the relationship first being established in November 2020.
This was after the need for InReach and technical support which had been identified through our own in-depth Group analysis. The frequency of requests and the need for Land Search & Rescue Groups to be equipped and supported with Garmin devices increased, and through our partnership with Garmin, we have been able to address that need.
“Garmin provides an outstanding service and has helped extend Search and Rescue capabilities across New Zealand. The InReach minis and technical support have been game changers. This partnership is something we hope will last for many years to come.”

Norix backpackpacked with quality
by Brad Young Hunting & Fishing nz, Invercargilltatonka’s connection and understanding of New Zealand backcountry hunting is unrivaled, being a clear favourite among Kiwi hunters for many years. I was excited to try their new Modulus system, being designed and extensively tested in extreme New Zealand conditions, tweaked and fine-tuned in the bush by avid kiwi hunters and adventurers.
Like all great ideas, the Modulus is a simple concept, beautifully executed. Start with a base and build your own adventure.
The versatility of the Modulus starts with the pack frame, which is sold separately, and is based on the X1 carrying system for heavy loads. This is infact the same frame as the Bison pack with a bare weight of just 2.8kgs. The Modulus system includes the option of three packs, or Sac’s - a 75+10L weighing 1.4kg, 55+10L weighing 1.3kg, and a 30L weighing 1kg.
The interchangeability of the system really appeals, allowing you to change the pack size to suit the expedition planned. But what makes it really stand out are the load expansion qualities of the frame itself.
The Modulus X1 frame has a fold-out meat shelf allowing you to carry awkward heavy loads close to your back against the frame, perfect for packing out animals or pack rafts. It also allows you to strap your pack sac on the back of the load and strap your rifle barrel up or barrel down in the centre of the frame with or without the load and pack sac.
Clearly the Modulus is very well constructed, the X1 frame fits snug and is easy to adjust as well as being comfortable to carry.
I was supplied with the 75+10L and the 30L Sac’s to review. The 75+10L Sac is based on the Takonka Bison pack. I think it is an ideal size for most multiday missions. It has a drawcord top with a flap, internal and external pockets, a bottom opening zip with a compartment you can separate from the main pack, as well as having a large 3D zip to allow access to the whole centre of the pack. This is really helpful to quickly locate items and works great if they are in smaller dry bags to identify what you are after. This pack also has a central zipped external pocket and side water bottle style pockets that can also be used when strapping stuff to the sides of your pack.
The Modulus 30 Sac has a large double opening zip and internal and external pockets at the top as well as twin ice axe loops. It also has a blaze orange clip-on patch. This is a good size day pack, especially with the versatility of the expanding meat shelf on the frame to carry out your catch. It can also be rolled up and stored in the 75+10L pack. Both sacs are hydration bladder compatible with an internal pouch to hold the bladder. The built-in Recco advanced rescue reflector system is excellent as rescue personnel can detect location using their Recco sensors in an emergency.
When I first clipped a sac onto the frame it looked a little daunting with all the straps, but as you clip in the metal C clips and start to pull it all together you see it is very intuitive and well thought out.
I think the Tatonka Modulus system is a great addition to our load expandable pack options, so pop down to your local Hunting & Fishing New Zealand to evaluate it in-store and have one fitted ahead of your next adventure!
“The interchangeability of the system really appeals, allowing you to change the pack size to suit the expedition planned. But what makes it really stand out are the load expansion qualities of the frame itself.”

Vacuum Sealers
zeropak status solid 300
FRESH INNOVATION
by Brooke Kimber Hunting & Fishing nz, CambridgeIntroducing the revolutionary ZeroPak Status Solid 300 Dual Seal Vacuum Sealer. This cutting-edge kitchen appliance is designed to take your food preservation to the next level. With its advanced technology and sleek design, the Status Solid 300 promises to be a game-changer.
I have been using this unit for the past five months and it has never missed a beat! Whether you've just been out for a fish, or have been out hunting and have some venison ready to go in the freezer, the Status Solid 300 has got you covered.
Equipped with double seal technology, this vacuum sealer creates an airtight and leak-proof seal ensuring your food is kept fresher for longer.
Its solid construction and powerful suction capability provides a reliable sealing experience. The intuitive control panel allows you to customize the vacuum and sealing process according to your needs.
The removable liquid trap/drip tray with liquid sensor can catch any liquids accidentally sucked out of the bag while vacuuming protecting the vacuum sealer. The machine will tell you that liquid has been sucked out of the bag and is in the tray. To clean just lift it out and wash in hot soapy water, dry and put back into place.
The pulse function is precise. The machine will vacuum while you have your finger on the pulse button and will stop the moment you take your finger off.
The ZeroPak Status Solid 300 also boasts a spacious sealing chamber, accommodating a variety of bag sizes. It even includes a built-in cutter and bag storage compartment for added convenience.
Say goodbye to freezer burn and food waste! Embrace the future of food preservation with the ZeroPak Status Solid 300 Dual Seal Vacuum Sealer and enjoy the benefits of longer-lasting freshness, convenience, and efficiency in your kitchen.

good design served up
by Willie Duley NZ Hunter adventuresthe humble camp cup and cutlery set is something often overlooked by us hunters. A last-minute dash to grab the oldest looking items in the pantry before a trip is an all-too-common occurrence! Enter Wildo eating accessories, a range of lightweight, durable and compact campware made in Sweden that is perfectly suited to the backcountry hunter, fisher and tramper down under here in New Zealand.
We first stumbled across Wildo’s 250ml and 500ml Fold-a-Cups about 10 years ago when looking for something more compact and lightweight than the common options available. After that very first trip they’ve become our go-to camp mugs and bowls ever since. Weighing in at a mere 25 grams for the 250ml Fold-a-Cup and 46 grams for the larger 600ml Fold-a-Cup (which we use as a bowl), what we love about these cups beyond their obvious light weight and durable Thermoplastic Elastomer construction, is their compactness, driven by their smart design whereby the top half of the cup folds down inside the bottom
Back Country freeze-dried meals.
The Camp-A-Box Complete set is the do-it-all modular meal kit that packs away nice and compact and is constructed from super-durable materials to ensure nothing is getting crushed or deformed in the bottom of your pack. Lightweight and functional, these are great little sets for back country dining.
The full Wildo range includes cups, mugs, bowls, plates, sporks and more, available in a variety of bright colours (so you won’t misplace them out on the hill), and all these products are BPA free.
Forever being asked by viewers about ‘where can they find those mugs we’re using on the show’, it’s great to hear the Wildo range will now be available to check out on the shelves at your local Hunting & Fishing NZ store.
gun safety comes WITH EXPERIENCE!
by andy tannock hunting & fishing nzit’s a natural fit for Hunting & Fishing New Zealand to be partnering with NZ Young Farmers. We love our connection with the rural communities, and we supply a big cross section of gear for farm use including clothing and footwear, plus everything from headlamps to farm knives, then there’s all the recreational kit for the many outdoors pursuits farm families get into. When it comes to firearms on farms, we’re right behind anything that teaches safety and encourages the skills that experience brings to safe shooting. Guns are an essential tool on farms, particularly for pest control, and farms provide a vast recreational hunting opportunity not only to landowners, but also staff and friends.
The Young Farmer event format starts in each of the seven Young Farmers chapter regions, where they hold a claybird competition at a local gun club with members getting to experience a proper shooting competition with the fun of being up against each other. We come in here by spicing
conjunction with the Young Farmer of the Year event which was held in Timaru this year. Our premium shot shell provider, Eley, supplied the ammo used which ensured top results all round. Another of our suppliers, Churchill Shotguns, put up two major shotgun prizes for first and second, and there were more Hunting & Fishing New Zealand voucher for the minor places. For 2023 the bragging rights went to Otago/Southland’s Shane Sanders who held his nerve and shot brilliantly to pull off top gun! However, the blokes did not have it all their way with Aorangi’s Mikayla Bryant nailing a superb second place, while East Coast’s David Easton joined the podium in third. David then combined with Quinn Steed, showing great teamwork resulting in East Coast pulling off the Teams Championship win.

Merino Thermals +
The Hunting & Fishing Merino blend thermals will be the go-to for warmth, layering and durability this spring.
Merino is the ultimate natural yarn with many properties that cannot be replicated by using 100% synthetic fibers.
Thermoregulator Merino wicks moisture from the body, leaving the skin dry and comfortable. It is considered an intelligent yarn that has climate control which cools when the temperature rises and warms the body in extreme cold weather conditions.
Odour-resistant Merino also has natural antibacterial properties that resist retaining any odour, staying fresh for longer.

Specifically Designed For New Zealand Alpine Hunting
The LOWA High Country Evo GTX® was designed for NZ hunting above the tree line and around the Southern Alps.
Its special features include the LOWA Flex lacing system (including the patented X-Lacing Stud to keep the tongue in place), plus a high alpine rand to protect the leather against rocks and scree.
The floating lace loops conform and flex with your foot to reduce pressure. This gives you the stability you need for alpine environments and more versatile comfort when travelling in the forest below the tree line.
Built for 3-4 season performance with a waterproof and breathable Gore-Tex® membrane to keep your feet dry and comfortable. This heavy duty hunting boot can easily handle over 25kg in pack weight, plus carry your trophy home.
“We wore the High Country fresh out of the box on our latest trip and found them to be comfortable with plenty of support as expected (and no blisters). With a range of boots suited to New Zealand’s diverse hunting terrain and their out of the box comfort, LOWA is the trusted boot of choice for all of our hunting adventures.”

Our Selection Explained - Terms and Conditions
The products listed in this catalogue represent what is on order at the time of printing and what we plan to have collectively available through Hunting & Fishing New Zealand® stores nationwide with reserve supplies available from our importers where possible. We have ordered what we believe will be sufficient stock to last us 2 months from the date of publication. Specials and close-out deals however are limited by stock availability. Hunting & Fishing New Zealand® will not be responsible for lack of stock through supplier problems. We strive to print correct colours and images but cannot guarantee that they will always be a 100% correct representation of the products advertised. The climatic and geographic diversity of New Zealand makes stocking everything in each store impractical, however each store does carry as full a range as is practical and financially possible. If you want something from this catalogue and it’s not available at your local store, then we will
We offer five convenient ways to shop...
leave no stone unturned getting it from our extensive store network with the goal of delivering it to you within 3-5 working days. During sales and special closeouts etc, we may not be able to supply your first choice, but you can be assured that we will always suggest the closest alternative.
Pricing Policy - Trading Terms and Conditions
We pride ourselves on our buying power and if you ever see an item advertised for less elsewhere, then give us the chance to match or beat it, because our printed prices can go out of date. As always, we reserve the right to correct prices up or down if our costs change or if there is a misprint in this catalogue. Note too that while our advertised prices are current at the time of printing, the fluctuating dollar may make changes necessary this season. All savings indicated are off full retail price. Special pricing in this publication ends 31st October 2023 or earlier if stock at special catalogue pricing runs out. Other conditions may apply.
Finance options
We offer a variety of payment and finance options in our stores. To get approved for finance we can do the regular checks in-store, although, a convenient service we recommend is to get your pre-approval online before you even go shopping.
Then simply walk into your favourite Hunting & Fishing New Zealand store and select items within your shopping credit limit, process your pre-approval authority, then get “Out There Doing It”. Lending criteria, fees, terms and conditions apply and may vary between finance companies.
