fly Fishing has grown in popularity over the last few years and although it is far more accessible than in the past it can be a daunting task to get yourself started. One of the nice things about fly fishing is it’s not as elitist as it once was and to get yourself started all you really need is a licence, one of the Primal starter combo’s, a leader and a few flies. Here’s a quick list of tips to get you started on your journey.
Learn To Cast – if there is one part of the journey that’s a little difficult it’s learning to cast. The best thing not to do is just grab a rod and figure it out for yourself. With fly casting there are some simple principals of how it works and it’s not like casting a spinning rod, it’s not hard but worth taking the time to learn properly. Here are the main points,
Work on getting the tip of the rod to travel in a straight line. The fly line will follow whatever the rod tip does. So, if you want the line to travel in a straight line towards your target, your rod tip will first need to go in that straight line. The tendency when we start learning to fly cast is the rod travels in a big semicircle above our head. So, keep the wrist under control and drive the rod with your forearm and you’ll get the line travelling out nice and straight.
2 3 4 5
Stop at each end of the cast and pause. This does two things, firstly it allows the line to straighten after you stop the rod tip. Secondly it allows the rod to straighten after it’s been bent (or loaded) with the weight of the line. Once the rod straightens, it casts the line for you so all you have to do is stop.
Apply power smoothly. When you’re making the cast try and keep it as smooth as possible, this means the tip won’t bounce around and tangle your line. You’ll be surprised at how little effort you need to get it to work.
Reduce slack. One thing that can kill your cast is having a lot of loose line in the system that kills the energy. So tighten up all of the loose line and if you need to just focus on making short and well controlled casts versus long casts that land in a pile.
Vary the casting arc as you vary the casting distance. As you do get better at casting you’ll want to cast further and further. To do this you’ll need to increase the length of your casting stroke ie (how far the rod moves) and also open up the cast more with the wrist.

For a deeper dive into learning to cast we’d suggest clicking on this QR code and watching the videos to learn the basic principles.
Every item in this catalogue has been through a selection process where quality and value for money are carefully scrutinised. These products can be categorised as ‘GOOD, better or best’ in their various fields.
GOOD - So, you can trust us that at the very least all catalogue gear will be ‘good’. This especially applies to lower priced items and deals where the excellent value for money could actually re-classify them as ‘VERY good’.
BETTER - From ‘good’ the upgrade to ‘better’ may mean a higher-grade rod on a proven reel, an up spec’d reel on a popular rod, or a step up in the quality and function of both. Pricing and detail will provide a key to evaluating this. Look out for PRO-PICK highlighted combos through the catalogue where appropriate members of our store staff share their own knowledge and advice on the higher quality gear that they use themselves.
BEST - We’ve highlighted examples of the absolute top tier tackle – look for the PREMIUM PICK logo. We get that an angler at the top of his or her game will prefer to pick and choose their own combinations of rod and reel.

Russell HUNTING & FISHING NZ, Queenstown
The Queenstown Lakes District is blessed with an abundance of fishing opportunities with many aspiring anglers travelling to the region to enjoy their sport or catch that once-in-a-lifetime trout. Unfortunately though, we do hear the odd story about the one not landed “because we left our net at home” or “didn’t think we could take it on the plane”. To help mitigate this scenario we wanted to draw your attention to the Maritec Landing Net with Magnetic
The short-handled, sure-grip design, together with the blue anodised frame and deep rubberised mesh bag make for a durable and reliable fishing companion. What’s more, the strong magnetic release makes carrying and disengaging a breeze meaning that the net is always ready and waiting to help finish the job. Priced at just $59.99, there is now simply no excuse to go home empty-handed!! Call in to any of the Hunting & Fishing New Zealand stores around the country, and let us help make this your best fishing season yet!
I was recently asked if I might be interested in trialling the new Berkley PowerBait Trout Nibbles. As I am always keen to try new products and methods my arm was easily twisted. I quickly came up with a plan to head down to the Tekapo canals for a couple of days to wet a line and give these wee baits a go.
I was confident that these would be successful considering scientists from Berkley have spent years working on formulas to attract fish, get them to bite, and hold on.
I can tell you the Berkley scientists know what they are doing and they’re not wrong! Trout nibbles are absolute dynamite!
I had almost instant success landed 6 trout using the Trout Nibbles within the first two hours.
When I rig the baits, I always use a suitable sized hook in relation to the size of the bait, also making sure my barbs are crimped to help prevent damage to any fish I wish to release. They can be fished under a float, on the bottom and anywhere in between. The fact that they float make them extremely universal, though when float fishing make sure you use a split shot or two to keep the Nibble from floating to the surface.
You can fish them with just split shots or a heavier weight to get down deeper depending on depth or current and use with a trace of around 1 meter. Having the bait floating with the weight below can be very effective. But when fishing this way, the fish often have a tendency to swallow the bait, so crimping the barbs does come into play here making it a lot easier if wanting to release fish.
Starting from only $17.99, if you want to catch more fish or try a new method, then get yourself some of the new Berkley Trout Nibbles and get going!

’ve been a fan and avid user of Lamson fly reels for over 20 years now. They are a brand that have never let me down and I’ve learnt to rely on their silky smooth drags for all of my fishing needs.
The thing that sets Lamson apart from all other fly reels is their uniquely designed sealed conical drag. The drags are compact, have a huge range of settings and are always smooth. I’m sure one of the reasons they are so smooth is they are sealed in a small cylinder that keeps dust and water out, this seems to ensure the drags are always consistent and don’t really need servicing.
One of the other things that has kept me using Lamson reels over such a long period is the fact they are always on the cutting edge of reel design. Not only do the reels always look modern and cool, they are always improving on weight, balance and improved tolerance. Over the past 6 months I’ve been fishing the new Lamson Liquid S reels. The Liquid series are die cast, so are more affordable than the machine cut Lamson reels. The new S series, is similar in shape and design to the Speedster reel, so compared

right balance. For me the Liquid S sets a new standard in performance at a reasonable price, it packs Lamson’s perfect drag in a really cool looking package. Spare spools are available as is a new Remix model which features the same die cast spools with a slightly stronger and lighter machine cut frame. The reel’s are either available on their own or in a kit which includes a carry case and two extra spare spools, perfect for sinking lines. The Liquid S reels are also available on a Primal Raw CCC combo and also the newly released Primal Revel CS combo. The reels are available in sizes 3+ to 9+ to cover everything from 3 to 10 weight lines making them suitable for anything from small streams to light saltwater.

Ayou, the keen whitebaiter, is that when you walk into any one of our stores –whether you are a seasoned professional or someone looking for first-time advice – you will find a team member ready and waiting (as long as the tides aren’t right!) to point you in the right direction.
Whitebait are such tasty wee critters, a true NZ delicacy, but the beauty of them is that they are accessible to everyone! I was lucky enough to be introduced to whitebaiting at a very early age, growing up in close proximity to the Rakaia River, Lake Ellesmere and the various culverts in the area, chasing whitebait was always a family affair – something we did as an immediate family but also with cousins, aunts and uncles and of course many many friends. A lot of these friendships continue today, and more are being made as each season passes. As I aged (gracefully of course!), I found myself venturing further afield and experiencing rivers such as the Waimakariri on the outskirts of Christchurch, but then a mild addiction to the West Coast, and in particular the Haast area which is where I passed on the whitebaiting addiction to my own children! Having fished with a myriad of techniques from dip netting the surf, pot netting some bigger southern rivers, set
comfortable on the river the addition of good waders, a life jacket, sunglasses, bucket or ice box for storing and caring for your catch and lunch, rain wear, sun hats, sunscreen, insect repellant, deck chair and the list goes on.

Forgo the fritters and discover this fresh twist on whitebait. Indulge in this creamy whitebait pasta that combines the delicate flavors of fresh seafood with a luxurious, velvety sauce. Sautéed in butter and garlic, the tender whitebait adds a subtle sweetness to each bite. Piled atop of fresh homemade pasta and an aromatic blend of heavy cream, Chardonnay, Parmesan cheese, with a hint of lemon zest, this dish offers a harmonious balance of textures and flavors that’s perfect for any occasion. You can always serve with ‘fresh’ pasta from the supermarket rather than making it by hand and, the ‘work’ in this recipe is in making the pasta from scratch. The gentle cooking of the Whitebait in this recipe and the velvety fresh pasta allows this delicacy to shine.
Fresh Tagliatelle Pasta
4 Large Organic eggs
400 gm Plain/All Purpose Flour
Directions
1. Create a mound of flour on your bench, adding some extra to the side to use while you knead.
2. Create a well in the centre of the flour, then break each egg into the well, then whisk the eggs gently together using a fork or your fingers.
3. Slowly drop in the flour from the sides of the well, mixing it through and being careful not to let any of the egg escape.
4. Once the eggs are mixed in with the flour, you can use a fork to drag any excess from your board back into the dough before starting to mix it together with your hands.
5. Knead the dough by pressing down and forward with the heel of your hands, then fold back in and repeat. If the dough is too dry, wet your fingertips a bit.
6. Continue to knead the pasta dough for around 10 minutes or until it smooths out and softens in consistency.
7. Create a ball with your pasta dough and cover it tightly with cling wrap or a bowl and leave to rest for 10-20 minutes.
8. After your pasta dough has rested, check that it is soft and smooth then cut a nice thick piece, sprinkle flour on the top and bottom and press down with your fingers slightly flattening it.
9. Roll this piece of dough forward and back with your rolling pin, until you create a silky-smooth sheet of pasta that has an even thickness all over.
10. When you are happy with the thickness, sprinkle a small amount of flour on top, then fold your pasta in half several times, until you’re left with a log around 5-10 cm in length.
11. Next, cut the homemade tagliatelle with a pastry cutter or a sharp knife, measuring approx. 1cm between each cut.
12. Unravel the pasta gently and then sprinkle some flour on top, before creating small nests and leaving them to rest on a tray (also dusted with flour underneath).
13. Repeat steps 8-12 for the remaining pasta, ensuring to keep an even thickness of your pasta across each batch.
14. Create portions and put it on a tray then in the fridge or freezer (if you’re not using it immediately) and ensure there is enough flour between each strand, so it doesn’t stick together.
Shallots, (finely chopped)
1 cup Chardonnay
2 cloves Garlic, (finely chopped)
300 ml Cream
1 Tbsp Lemon zest
1 Sea salt and cracked black pepper, (to season)
1 Nutmeg, (freshly grated)
Directions
1. In a medium sized saucepan on a medium heat, melt the butter and add the shallots to sauté.
2. Once the shallots are softened add the garlic and wine.
3. Increase the heat and bring to the boil allowing the liquid to reduce by half.
4. Add the cream, lemon zest and cracked black pepper and further reduce for a few minutes.
5. Add salt and nutmeg to taste and keep warm.
Final Ingredients
400 g Whitebait
1 Parmesan cheese, (freshly grated)
1 Parsley – roughly chopped (to serve)
Directions
Cook the pasta until al dente and drain.
As the pasta cooks, add the whitebait to the hot sauce to cook for approx. one minute.
Twirl the pasta into the centre of four warm plates, pile whitebait on top, spoon on some sauce and top with parmesan and parsley.

Slow jigging is an awesome technique – it is not only an alternative way of fishing but also a great way of targeting a huge variety of fish.
Jigs designed for slow jigging come in a variety of different shapes and sizes, from 40g-200g typically and provide different actions and the ability to fish varying depths. The Shimano Snapper Slow Jig pack for only $99.99 offers a fantastic bundle of hard lures for those that want to give slow jigging a go, or for
I would highly recommend this method of fishing to anyone who enjoys a good day out on the open water. In my experience I have found that slow jigging ensures a more productive day out with less work to be done, opposed to speed jigging which for me is viewed as a far more taxing way of fishing. Another reason why slow jigging is my tactic of choice is due to the amount of play I get out from such a light profile jig to trigger bites even when other methods fail to
The best situation I find myself using slow jig tactics is when I am anchored down in thirty water with my dead baits no longer cutting the mustard, I know I can drop my jigs and start seeing the results.

Available in 5 colours and 6 hook sizes, ranging from a sharp 2/0 circle hook, perfect for catching smaller mouthed fish like Tarakihi, right up to a 7/0 for big Snapper and Kingfish. What sets the Instinct Snapper Flasher Rig apart is its integrated flasher blade, designed to mimic the glint of a distressed baitfish, enticing even the most cautious predators.
The Instinct Snapper Flasher range is exclusive to Hunting & Fishing New Zealand stores, ensuring anglers across the country have access to this great deal – 5 rigs for just $19.99.
Recently, I had a late afternoon fish testing these rigs. As the sun dipped below the horizon, I cast my line equipped with the Instinct Snapper Flasher Rig 6/0 in Pink & a chunk of baby squid – perfect for the cooler season in Tasman Bay.
Within minutes, the distinctive flash of the blade attracted a hungry Snapper.
I hooked a sizable catch, reaffirming the rigs effectiveness.
For anglers seeking reliability and results without breaking the bank, the Instinct Snapper Flasher Rig is a must-have companion on any saltwater fishing expedition. BAIT CATCHER $19

the Seychelles, where amongst other things they have monster dogtooth tuna. No fish will test jigging tackle harder than a big doggie, so I was spooled up with Ocea PE6 braid to give me over 50kg of breaking strain, my leader was 150lb
The first thing I wanted to know was how it felt jigging, it’s crucial that the retrieve ratio, the handle length and the action of the rod all work together to stay in rhythm and keep the action of the jig going with minimal effort, which is important when we were jigging in 35-degree heat! My drag was set to 14kg, more than what most game-fishers set their drags to when trolling for marlin, and I still had some in reserve with max drag on this reel at 20kg, and it would be
I found the small size of the reel made it easy to grip the rod and reel in my left hand, and the centrally weighted handle kept everything well balanced and comfortable. New jigging set-ups often take a little while to get used to, but halfway through my first retrieve it felt good, and it was just as well, I got slammed. Now it was time to see how the gear handled under load. The first run was only about four of five meters of line, and the rod loaded evenly and balanced with no twist, so I leaned back and applied a little more drag. I knew then it wasn’t a big dogtooth, it didn’t pull another inch of line and I was easily able to lift the fish and I expected it was a rat, but to my surprise it was an
Once the heat of the day increased, I dropped to a smaller 290-gram jig. Using the heavy PE8 rod that is needed to fight the XOS fish, I was concerned the lighter jig might not have the same balance, but it was actually spot on. The combo caught dogtooth up to 25kg on jigs, but the biggest test came when I caught a small yellowfin tuna, and sent it out on my new combo as a live bait
Back home and my first three drops of my jig on the same set resulted in three kingfish all around 15kg. It was here fighting a familiar fish I noticed how much smoother the lever drag was, which is important when fighting kingfish. Not only does a smooth drag reduce the chance of the line impact loading and breaking, I reckon kingfish don’t go as hard for the bottom when they have even resistance, the rod and the angler can help smooth things out here too.
Another thing I noticed was how easy the handle was to wind when under load, the nature of lever drags is, the more drag applied the harder the handle is to turn. But the Shimano double drag system has reduced the torque on the handle by 30%, so when you get into a battle where you are really grunting for every inch to get the fish’s head up, you get that handle turned easier to get that valuable line back.
see opposite pg
A huge dogtooth ate the yellowfin, and even with my full 20kg of drag it made it to the bottom 90 meters down, but the heavy leader held out, and my tough little OJ 2500/Grappler set worked the fish up to 50 meters off the
In general terms lever drags are smoother and the drag can be set more precisely, allowing you to set the drag right to the very limit of the lines breaking strain, both important factors when you need to stop a kingfish from dragging you into the reef.

for many anglers, the pursuit of swordfish is the pinnacle of sport fishing. It requires knowledge, patience, and the right gear to get you in the game. Recently, I had the opportunity to test the new Daiwa Seaborg G1800M-RJ electric reel on a trip to the deep waters behind Great Barrier Island. Though the swordfish eluded us this time, the performance of the Seaborg G1800M-RJ left a lasting impression.
Daiwa Seaborg G1800M-RJ Electric Reel
Our adventure began in the dark, with the boat slicing through the calm waters as we made our long steam to the swordfish grounds. Once we finally made it to the zone the anticipation was palpable as we set up our gear. The Seaborg G1800M-RJ, fresh out of the box and spooled up with 1200m of PE10 braid, gleamed under the early morning sun and its striking “Ironking Monster” cosmetic certainly impressed the crew on the boat. This reel is a beast, built for deep-sea fishing with Daiwa’s flagship Megatorque G motor, sleek design, and robust construction using a lightweight aluminium body and Magsealed ballbearings. The electric motor is almost double the size of the smaller Seaborg 1200MJ so it promised to ease the strain of reeling in a massive swordfish from the depths - a feature I was eager to put to the test.
As we reached the drop zone, the depth finder showed sign a promising 800 meters below us. I rigged up the Seaborg G1800M-RJ with a heavy-duty swordfish squid rig and sent it down into the abyss. The reel's smooth and responsive controls made it easy to manage the descent, the digital readout kept me informed of the line's depth with precision, and the Bluetooth Remote Jog meant I could stay in touch and manage the dropping and retrieval process from anywhere within the boat. Very handy for when you
Hour after hour, we drifted and trolled, waiting for that telltale strike. The Seaborg's automatic stop function at the preset depth was a godsend, preventing the rig from hitting the bottom and tangling. This feature allowed me to focus more on the surroundings and less on micromanaging the line, a significant advantage in the deep-sea environment. Being able to do multiple deep drops in a short period of time without any physical exertion is one of the key benefits of electric reels like this. It allows you to cover more ground and increase your chances of finding the fish without breaking a sweat.
Despite our best efforts, the swordfish remained elusive. Yet, the reel's performance during these long, quiet periods was impeccable. The manual cranking option was a pleasant surprise, offering a smooth transition from electric to manual operation, ensuring I never felt out of control. The power and speed of the motor were consistent, providing a reliable pull that inspired confidence, even when the fish were uncooperative.
drag to the test, along with the Seaborg’s 80kg of max hoisting force, we’d have to park that mission for the next weather window. Another new feature unique to the G1800M-RJ is an audible drag sound to assist the angler with drag slip, which is another great feature we’d have to wait for another day to test!
One of the standout features of the Seaborg G1800M-RJ was its endurance. The battery life held up impressively, powering through the day without a hitch. Knowing that your gear can keep up with the demands of deep-sea fishing provides a peace of mind that's hard to overstate, because you’re a long way from home for a replacement if gear fails.
As the day drew to a close and we made our way back to the marina, I reflected on the Seaborg G1800M-RJ. While we didn't hook

what memories come to mind when you think back on a great adventure? To others, a snapshot capturing the target species might describe a simple achievement. But what do you and the mates you were with remember?
The steaks are always a great reward, but they taste that much better because of the experience that helped procure them. While many seasoned adventurers know their “why” and understand this deeply, we are concerned that we might be guilty of taking this for granted and doing a disservice to those who have not yet experienced it. That is, while the pursuit of a target provides direction for an adventure, the true rewards come from the journey itself.
This is a long-term project where we will engage experts and seek help from some great New Zealanders. This summer, we will document some accessible adventures in a different light by sharing stories, telling yarns, and exploring what makes us tick.
Our goal is to inspire others to prioritize their health through outdoor exploration.
For many of us at Orson and Okuma, this is a challenge rooted in our "Kiwiness" — our inherent difficulty in communicating that sometimes, we are not just “hunting for meat”. It took my now wife a while to grasp my “outdoor priorities”, but after joining me on a few trips, she understood. Together, we've discovered the joy of sharing these experiences, and it has helped me realize that there is an even greater benefit in enabling someone else to experience the same.
Let's break down some of the benefits I have seen from a hunting or fishing trip:
Planning: The journey begins well before we set foot outdoors. It can involve months of preparation, from researching destinations to honing our skills. Planning isn't just logistics; it's a side project that gets the ticker going, offering opportunities to learn, socialize, and prepare for the unknown.
During: This phase is where memories are made, and new challenges are embraced. Whether actively pursuing a target species or simply soaking in nature, each moment holds its own rewards, and you must stop and make the most of it. Outdoors is where I relax and reset, disconnecting from the noise of daily life and check in with myself. There is no more honest conversation than one around a campfire or on the back of a boat, in the middle of nowhere (even if it's with yourself!).
After: While we may return tired and with a backlog of emails, the adventure's impact lingers. It's about the stories shared, the smiles exchanged, and the memories that sustain us until the next excursion. This is where my community and family see the benefits, as we return rejuvenated and refocused (and maybe with a few treats).
Stay tuned and follow @OkumaNZ, @OrsonOutdoors, and @HuntingandFishingNZ for updates on our journey.
This merely touches on some of the mental and physical health benefits that the outdoors provides me, and many of you will be able to list your own. The question is, are we doing our bit to encourage others to experience the same?
Alongside the great team at Hunting and Fishing New Zealand, we have committed to exploring the mental and physical health benefits of the outdoors and doing our bit to get the message out to those who don’t know.

Ocean Angler saltwater range
G Bombs are fitted with a single, tough ‘swimming’ tail that’s proved very hard for fish to resist. Just the slightest motion or current is enough to bring this sliver of rubber to life, aided by the smaller trailing hook. Indeed, if the assist’s tail is lost, the size and quantity of fish attracted drops significantly. Fortunately, replacement tails and assists are available.
Ocean Angler is justifiably proud of the fact that all G Bombs are armed with Owner hooks. They might be small, but boy, are they strong! Light, whippy rods work best with G Bombs, as they help to provide a gently undulating action to the lure and also act as a shock absorber when fish are hooked, helping the small hooks to stay connected and unbent.
G Bombs can be used in water as shallow as 10 metres (especially if it’s murky and there’s current) all the way out to over 100 metres! Personally, I find the main thing is to get down to the bottom and stay there, so tend to go heavy
Slowly wind up off the seafloor, but usually no more than seven to 10 rotations (I prefer to do this with mechanical-jigging movements rather than straight winding, but both work). Now stop, wait for a few seconds, and if no bites drop down and try again. If you feel bites, don’t strike; instead wind quicker and/or lift the rod. Striking often misses the fish and causes the tail to be ripped off more quickly than it should be.
As a super-keen soft-baiter I’m after a product that’s as effective as possible, and as far as I’m concerned Z-Man soft-baits offer a package of useful qualities that’s hard to beat, especially the Jerk ShadZ range.
First up, it’s worth noting that Z-Mans are made from super-tough ElaZtech, a material that’s not a plastic and which contains no harmful phthalates. This quality is unsurpassed by any other brand; while other brands are getting bitten to bits or ripped apart, Z-Mans stay in one piece and remain
The material’s softness enables lures to impart a seductive action while dropping, lifting or being retrieved. This quality also means that Z-Mans
impart a seductive action if correctly fitted. Jerk ShadZ are just as effective in
If fishing locally for a feed I’ll mostly go for the 5” Jerk ShadZ, whereas the 7” version tends to be chosen when targeting larger fish in more distant destinations - but this is far from the absolute rule!
I’ll always try to determine the lightest jig-head that will get down in the circumstances, as fish will often grab these soft-baits during the descent. It’s also important to look at achieving the exact casting angles required for the circumstances; the way the tide and wind affect each other are infinite, so finding which casting angle allows the soft-bait to descend and

t’s wild goat hunting season! Following the success of the 2023 National Wild Goat Hunting Competition the Department of Conservation, the New Zealand Deerstalkers Association (NZDA) and supporting partners, including Hunting & Fishing New Zealand have decided to bring it back for 2024.
The competition can take place anywhere people have permission to hunt. This includes private land as well as public land. This is a great opportunity to build relationships with local landowners.
Over 10,000 wild goats were removed last year – can we beat this for 2024?
In 2023, one of our winners, Jesse O’Gorman, dropped flyers into the letterboxes of local landowners around his hometown Wellington. This led to gaining permission to hunt wild goats on QEII blocks and a large forestry block.
Wild goats are prolific breeders, and when left unchecked can cause extensive damage to the environment. Hunters can help play a role in the management of numbers.
We are thrilled to have Hunting & Fishing New Zealand as a Supporting Partner and Founding Sponsor. Hunting & Fishing New Zealand are supporting critical aspects of the event with every store participating in the competition. You can also enter at selected DOC offices and NZDA branches across the country – so there’s no excuse not to submit some wild goat tails this year!
We’d love to hear about your goat hunting adventures as well as what you do with the meat. Wild goats can make great eating.
The competition will run 1 August – 26 November and there are over $70,000 of prizes up for grabs, including $20,000 worth of prizes from Hunting & Fishing New Zealand.
Last year the wild goat meat recipes produced by wild meat specialist chef, Dariush Lolaiy, from Cazador Restaurant, were extremely popular. Why not try something new? Check out DOC’s blog and put some tasty wild goat meat dinners on the family table.
“We are keen to see wild goat hunting become a regular feature in the hunting calendar,” says Ben Reddiex, Director National Programmes at DOC.
The competition takes place during a quieter period in the hunting calendar, after the roar and duck shooting. So, if you're planning a hunt soon, factor in a side mission to target some wild goats too.
Callum Sheridan, National Vice-President of NZDA says, “The timing gives recreational hunters an extra reason to get out into the back country and refine their hunting skills – all while doing their part to control wild goat numbers”.
The competition promotes safe, ethical, and humane hunting. Supporting partner Te Tari Pūreke | Firearms Safety Authority would like to remind hunters to handle, transport and store their firearms safely, and always identify their target beyond all doubt.

ow I’m not the most tech guy out there in regards to new and innovative things so when I was asked to write an article on two scopes recently released by Burris into the New Zealand market it was with some uncertainty I started my investigation. Once I got my hands on the scopes and followed some pretty easy steps I was amazed at the simplicity with which someone could take these into the field and shoot mid to longer ranges effectively without too much trouble.
Burris Scope - Eliminator 6 and the Veracity PH
one, it’s a good buy for hassle free shooting.
The Veracity PH is another technological advancement for the Burris range of scopes. Where this scope differs from the current Veracity range is its programmable elevation knob (PEK) and heads-up display (HUD) technology.
The Burris Eliminator is not new to us in hunting circles and has been around for over 2 decades. The Eliminator 6 however, is a different beast altogether. The most noticeable change from its predecessors is it actually looks like a normal hunting scope and with the use of 34mm rings you can mount this on any gun easily. Another major improvement is the glass quality. The Eliminator 6 is equipped with multi-coated HD glass that delivers an excellent brightness and clarity leaving the older models in its wake.
The PEK allows users to ‘dial-to-distance’ using a click-less digital elevation turret courtesy of the BurrisConnect app. You simply input your ballistic data ie bullet type, muzzle velocity, environmental conditions etc and the app calculates a ballistic profile based on the information given. You then connect via Bluetooth and transmit the profile to the scope. Once zeroed to your distance specified in the profile the scope will now dial digitally to 1/10th MOA accuracy out to any given distance.
The Eliminator 6 is equipped with multi coated HD glass that delivers an excellent brightness and clarity leaving the older models in its wake.
The Eliminator 6 still does everything we know and love about the old models, it just does them better.
• Precise inbuilt rangefinder, capable of ranging reflective targets at 2000 yards.
• Built in heads-up display (HUD) providing important ballistic and rifle data
• Fine tuning parallax adjustment
• Bluetooth connectivity allows pairing to the BurrisConnect App where the user can upload custom ballistic profiles and modify advanced scope features.
• Inbuilt environmental sensors including thermometer and barometer which are essential for long range ballistic calculations.
• The X177 reticle uses 177 micro LED’s to provide an aiming solution with 1/6 MOA accuracy.
If you don’t want to be carrying a rangefinder around, checking drop charts and dialing in your MOA/ MRAD adjustment this scope does it all for you. Once you have chosen your ballistic profile or downloaded your own custom profile you simply push the range button on the side turret and the scope does the rest, providing you with a precise holdover point for any given distance. On the range it proved exactly that and once zeroed at 100 yards it proceeded to hit the target out to 400 yards effectively and precisely. I have no doubt that a competent shooter could shoot beyond 400 yards and take game ethically with accurate ballistic data loaded in. This is not a cheap scope with an RRP of $5099 but given it is a rangefinder, ballistic calculator and scope all in
The heads-up display (HUD) is shown in the upper portion of the reticle. This shows you your current dial in MOA (yards or meters), rifle cant and battery level. You simply turn the top turret until the display reads the distance you need, put the cross hairs on the target and pull the trigger.
Like all of the Veracity range of scopes the PH is a solid piece of kit. It is robust and will handle New Zealand hunting conditions very well. The Veracity PH series includes various models with different magnification ranges and objective lens diameters, catering to different hunting preferences and shooting distances. With a price tag starting at $2449, it is great value and add to this the Burris ‘Forever Warranty’ its hard to beat.
This would be a great scope for hunting guides as there is no need to check drop charts and dial correction. Simply tell the client the range, they turn the top turret until the correct distance is displayed in the HUD and you’re ready to shoot.
I enjoyed shooting both of these scopes and feel they would be a welcomed addition to any hunters’ kit.
Did I mention the Burris ‘Forever Warranty’, no questions asked? It is that simple any Burris product, any problem, fixed or replaced no questions asked. You can buy with confidence knowing Burris stand by their product forever.

There are 4 main thermal sensor processing chips, and these are what make the magic happen, 256x192, 384x288, 640x512, and 1280x1028 (new). The higher the number the more clarity in the picture you receive as this refers to the number of pixels that make up the sensor. More pixels mean more points to detect temperature and temperature changes.
It’s not just the sensor that is important, there is also a sensitivity aspect to consider, this is called a Millikelvin (mK) reading or NetD. The smaller the number the better as this helps you detect heat differential in the thermal image therefore creating a more detailed image.
in a country where we are seeing rapid game animal increases. Everyday hunters can now control game like professionals. As with all technology that helps us become more efficient hunters, we need to be aware of the limitations. Identifying our targets beyond doubt and only taking shots that are within our capabilities is so important.
As technology advances, these devices continue to evolve, becoming more accessible and enhancing their utility across different sectors of society. There are numerous brands on the market that are all pretty good, the main thing to consider is understanding what your needs are and to be assured of great aftersales service from the brands you choose.

the negative spin that those opposed to our pursuits are putting out there. To sustain our rights to carry on with the heritage of activities we enjoy, we need to have a plan to ensure these are portrayed in balanced ways the general public can accept. The reality is, we are often the most active independent guardians of the environments we hunt and fish in, and we do this out of the connection we get through spending time in these special places. Our wish to put back isn’t for praise or publicity, in fact we shun this. But the reality is this modesty is actually letting us down. The public never get to learn of the positive outcomes
don’t want game animals or sports fish in NZ. Others don’t like guns, or don’t understand the wellbeing benefits that come from the things we do. The ‘anti’s’ are clever at manipulating public opinion, and while we’d rather just ignore this, we can no longer afford to. Whether providing for the family, assisting with pest control, or taking on challenges that make us better people, we need to be
A looming threat to the sustainability of some activities we currently pursue is the proposed review of the Wildlife Act. After 40 years this Act does need to be updated, but the worrying thing for hunters and anglers is the risk of biased advice the law reviewers are likely to get from those with a more fundamental outlook or agenda.
In 2021 I was invited to join a new group called ‘Hunters for Conservation’. The founders have a vision to establish an umbrella organisation that can have the credentials to attract financial support from big business and philanthropists. Sizeable funds would then be available for approved projects that benefit the community including initiatives such as natural habitat restoration, through to subsidising the costs of supplying venison to needy foodbanks. Hunters for Conservation is openly liaising with the many

ueenstown is the tourist poster child for New Zealand and is also widely regarded as a hunting and fishing mecca in its own rite. Our region is spoilt for year-round outdoor pursuits; camping, tramping, mountain climbing, trail riding to name a few. Being so central, you are only 2-3 hours away from fresh or saltwater fishing, diving, small game, gamebird or big game hunting opportunities depending on the season. Our passionate Team live and breathe the outdoors, and looking at our surrounds and what the region has to offer, make it a great place to call home.
Summer is the time of year when outdoor enthusiasts flock to the Queenstown Lakes District primarily with camping and fishing in mind. The region is known for its warm, dry summers, long days and crystal-clear water. The trout fishing is world-class, both for Rainbows and large resident Browns, while Quinnat Salmon and Redfin Perch are also on the menu. Please be aware of local regulations and the timing of which waterways open. Lake Wakatipu is a wonderful fishery and boasts a rich pioneering history as well as being recognized as both NZ’s longest lake at 80km and third largest overall.
Having such a plethora of fishing opportunities available, it makes sense that the Hunting & Fishing Queenstown store stocks all the latest offerings from leading brands like Shimano, Daiwa, Simms, Scott and Sage to name a few. The best part of our Remarkables Park location, is that you do not need to travel far to be successful, with local customers and our experienced staff knowing “Spot X’s” that can mean they have a trout or salmon in their net within 20 minutes of leaving the store.
Queenstown is also the gateway for those travelling to Fiordland, and in the past few years, has seen good numbers of Southern Bluefin Tuna being
well supplied. We are lucky enough to be able to walk out of our front door with a pair of binoculars or a spotting scope and find an animal on one of the surrounding hills within minutes. The abundance of feed means that these animals are always in good condition and with the species list varied, means you never know what you might come home with. One thing we are never short of down here is rabbits, with most landowners fighting the annual boom in the spring and summer time. You will find the Hunting & Fishing Queenstown Team out most evenings either behind a rifle helping keep numbers in check or down on one of the local waterways with a spin or fly rod in hand.
Come early March, the store changes from summer recreation and into our Hunting specialty. The Fiordland Wapiti Blocks are a huge part of our business together with the Haast and Wanaka Roar Blocks and Wilderness Tahr blocks. Those fortunate enough to have drawn a ballot simply walk off the plane and can be stocking up on their freeze dried meals, gas and ammunition within 5 minutes of leaving the airport.
The Scottish-descendant Central Otago Red Stags and mixed-race Fallow Bucks are highly sought after due to their fantastic genetics and good feed. Access to both public and private land can easily be arranged, and numbers are plentiful. Some of the heads coming out of the Queenstown region are world class which makes it a bucket list destination for many hunters. The local Chamois population is well established, and a trophy buck is the desire of local and tourist hunters alike.
At the beginning of April, we ramp up for what is considered as Otago and Southland’s calling card – the opening of the Gamebird season. Overnight the store is revamped to display the latest decoys, shotguns, ammo and accessories. With our season being longer than our North Island neighbours, we

In my experience when sighting in any firearm and using a bore sighter it’s best to use them at the distance you intend to be zeroing that firearm, hoping that the laser during a bright day can be seen through the scope at further distances. Eg. I want my .22LR to be zero at 50m, I would use the bore sighter, point the laser at my target at 50m and adjust the vertical and horizontal turrets to get my crosshair centre as close as possible to my target bull. Once that’s done you remove the bore sighter and continue to true shoot

• 3/4 length main zip with down filled baffle to trap warmth
• Zipped internal stash pocket
• Angled foot box for relaxed sleeping posture

For Hunting & Fishing New Zealand, it is all about enjoying the great outdoors. To help preserve our taiao (environment) we have been comprising some exciting sustainable options using ‘Reborn’ recycled polyester, certified organic Fair Trade & GOTS approved cotton, natural fibres, and recycled and biodegradable packaging.
Sustainable Blends + Recycled Fibres
Our plain fleece micro tees, sweatshirts & pants are now in our Reborn 100% recycled polyester, made from plastic bottles that would normally go into landfill. The yarn retains all the easy care and hard wearing attributes of our regular polyester fleece whilst bearing the Global Recycled standard
Sustainable Blends + Recycled Fibres
We are continuing to introduce natural yarns into our clothing ranges. The very nature of natural fibres also means it is less harmful to the environment and it will break down naturally and ultimately leave no trace. Look out for our single stag logo on these styles.

99 Cadillac Way, Annesbrook, Nelson 03 548 1840
ast year we locked in the opportunity to merge our two stores, Nelson and Richmond, into one brand-new store at the Nelson Junction. This was our chance to join our two teams together into a 1450m2 site and create a shop that not only displayed a generous range of hand-selected equipment but housed a team of experts to advise the selection.

clubs, friends, and family. Their dedication made the monumental task of shifting not one, but two stores, into this new space possible.
We spent 2023 dreaming up the best store design we could offer our customers. One that is modern, fresh, and has a layout that is both spacious and navigable.
We are thrilled to announce that our grand opening on April 20th, 2024, was a tremendous success, and we couldn't have done it without the incredible effort of our team, Gibbons, the trades, business partners, local
The day featured spin & win activities, grand opening sales, competitions, and the enticing aroma of venison being barbequed outside. The store was packed with hundreds of customers and friends, all eager to explore our new store and enjoy the festivities. The support from the community was overwhelming, and we are grateful for everyone who came to celebrate with us.
Having served the region for over 30 years, we are excited for the future of Hunting & Fishing Nelson and look forward to continuing to provide exceptional service and products for the next 30 years and beyond.
he Napier region has long been on our radar as an area with so much potential for those interested in the great outdoors. Not only does it have some of New Zealand’s best salt water fishing right on its doorstep, it also has great trout fishing, deer stalking and game bird hunting close by as well. It’s also only 2 hours away from Taupo, where I currently live and work as a co-owner of the Hunting & Fishing Taupo store. So when we heard that after 24 years Wooly had decided it was time to sell, you can bet we were the first on the phone to give him a call.
Less than a year ago the store went under a complete transformation, moving from the Prebensen Street address to the new store on Taradale Road. The move was lead by Wooly’s son Dylan and saw a complete revamp of the business, with a greatly elevated look and feel that came from the new fitout. It’s given us a great base to build off an we’re excited by the challenge to improve on it further, while adding our own unique touches.
As part of the change over we will be closing the business for a couple of weeks to make some changes to the look and feel of the store. This will be the 10th fitout/renovation that my father and business partner Mike Stent has been in charge of, having overseen multiple builds across the Taupo, Invercargill and Queenstown Hunting & Fishing stores that he has owned. We’re hoping to bring some of the great ideas from those stores and combine them with the Napier store to make it even better. We will be adding the odd wall, removing another here or there, changing some of the displays, and most importantly… adding more stock!
Watch this space Hawkes Bay for the New Hunting & Fishing Napier!

Our Selection Explained - Terms and Conditions
The products listed in this catalogue represent what is on order at the time of printing and what we plan to have collectively available through Hunting & Fishing New Zealand® stores nationwide with reserve supplies available from our importers where possible. We have ordered what we believe will be sufficient stock to last us 2 months from the date of publication. Specials and close-out deals however are limited by stock availability. Hunting & Fishing New Zealand® will not be responsible for lack of stock through supplier problems. We strive to print correct colours and images but cannot guarantee that they will always be a 100% correct representation of the products advertised. The climatic and geographic diversity of New Zealand makes stocking everything in each store impractical, however each store does carry as full a range as is practical and financially possible. If you want something from this catalogue and it’s not available at your local store, then we will
leave no stone unturned getting it from our extensive store network with the goal of delivering it to you within 3-5 working days. During sales and special closeouts etc, we may not be able to supply your first choice, but you can be assured that we will always suggest the closest alternative.
Pricing
We pride ourselves on our buying power and if you ever see an item advertised for less elsewhere, then give us the chance to match or beat it, because our printed prices can go out of date. As always, we reserve the right to correct prices up or down if our costs change or if there is a misprint in this catalogue. Note too that while our advertised prices are current at the time of printing, the fluctuating dollar may make changes necessary this season. All savings indicated are off full retail price. Special pricing in this publication ends 31st October 2024 or earlier if stock at special catalogue pricing runs out. Other conditions may apply.
We offer a variety of payment and finance options in our stores.
To get approved for finance we can do the regular checks in-store, although, a convenient service we recommend is to get your pre-approval online before you even go shopping.
Then simply walk into your favourite Hunting & Fishing New Zealand store and select items within your shopping credit limit, process your pre-approval authority, then get “Out There Doing It”. Lending criteria, fees, terms and conditions apply and may vary between finance companies.
