Duck shooting is bigger for many than Xmas, I know it is for me. Months of waiting, preparation and anticipation leads us to a season that always feels too short! With this in mind, you always want to make sure you are using equipment that is effective and fit for purpose, as a good days shooting can easily be wrecked by something not doing what it is supposed to. Unfortunately I had one such morning back in 2017 where the ammunition I was using didn’t go bang, nor did it want to cycle in my gun. I went to my local Hunting & Fishing and asked what I should be using, and the resounding response from the 3 guys at the counter was Eley. I made the switch and haven’t looked back!
For over 190 years, Eley Hawk have been producing high end shotgun cartridges for both game and sporting markets. Sourcing high end components from all over Europe and shipping them to their facility in England.
Loads go through 8 different inspection processes to ensure maximum quality, which simply means the kiwi shooter can rest assured their load will be reliable and consistent.
The product range offered is extensive, and caters for most of our waterfowling, pest control and sporting requirements.
For the duck shooter, the range starts with VIP Steel, this is a fantastic load for those using over and unders or smaller stature shooters as it offers the lowest recoil with the performance needed to get the job done. This 2 ¾ “ load fires at 1300fps, plenty to take down a green head on your smaller rivers or ponds. If you are shooting on farmland or don’t like to see plastic wads around, they also offer this load in an Eco Wad option, with the wad dissolving in 24 hours in water, or within 30 days on land.
The most popular option we sell is the VIP Lightning Steel. This 3” cartridge is offered in a 32gr or 36gr load in a number of shot sizes. This has been my go-to load since I started shooting Eley, utilising the 32gr #4s on smaller ponds or on days when numbers are known to be lower, then move to the 36gr #3 load for my bigger ponds or paddocks.
I would have fired over 20 slabs of this ammunition over the last few seasons, and I can honestly say that I have never had an issue. The recoil is low, the kills are clean and the powder burns effectively, meaning less cleaning! If you run a semi-auto shotgun, this is the cartridge for you!
For those of you running 20ga, there is a fantastic 24gr 2 ¾” load that is effective, but also doesn’t break the bank!

The Cupped Wing Mutt duck call has been produced since 2012 and with now over 10,000 sold they have earnt a well-deserved place on all of those duck hunters lanyards throughout New Zealand.
The Mutt Call is a double reed call that is designed, assembled, laser engraved, hand tuned and tested in Whakatane by renowned call maker Paul Thomas. These calls have earnt a reputation as a easy to blow call that will have mallards turning towards you with wings cupped and feet down looking for a place to drop into your decoy spread.
Personally, I used to run a variety of different duck call of various makes and models. Each call in my mind was to cater for different types of calls, quacks and clucks, various tones, higher or lower volumes and hunting occasions. Often this would lead to grabbing the wrong call at the wrong time and ballsing up what should be a simple task of calling in a duck. he Benelli M1 and M2 shotguns have been held in the highest regard across New Zealand since their launch in the late 80’s. Known for their ultra reliable Inertia Action, slim lines and simple operation, it has become one of the go to firearms for any discerning waterfowler. You would be hard pressed to find a maimai in the country that does not have at least one of these ready to rock and roll.
The design of the M2 has remained practically unchanged for more than a decade now, with the old saying “if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it” coming to mind. However, Benelli’s engineers felt an update was needed and have turned the trusted work horse into a modern waterfowlers dream.
The M2 Pro still houses the inertia system, which has been improved with an extra spring behind that bolt face, ensuring easier bolt rotation into the breach. This simple addition improves the reliability of the shotgun, quieter action closing and aids when firing light loads. As this gun has a 3” chamber, I ran a mixture of 2 ¾ and 3” loads without a single hang up.
The butt stock on the M2 Pro has had an upgrade as well, now housing the Progressive Comfort recoil reduction system. This progressive recoil absorption system kicks in gradually according to the cartridge being fired. This is teamed up with a soft cheek comb, making this light and pointable
The ergonomics have been looked at as well, with a new ribbed fore end, oversized bolt and mag release added to the Pro. Loading has been improved by the way of an open feed ramp under the action which is a
36 gram #2s it was a good test for the Progressive Recoil system. The gun performed flawlessly as expected and the improvements around loading and bolt controls meant it was fast to load up between mobs.
The next weekend I was able to take the M2 Pro to the local clay range. The Inertia action didn’t disappoint again, making short work of the light clay loads that we were running. We had an old M2 there at the same time, and when comparing them, you could easily tell the recoil was far less on the new Pro and the action faster with the improvement on the bolt I mentioned earlier.
The Crio chokes produced tight, consistent patterns which was clear to see by the way geese and clays were being hit.

Dating back to the mid 1980’s through to the 2000’s New Zealand has seen an increase in the number of upland game preserves formed. This has created a growing number of passionate local and international hunters as well as those attracted to outdoor game pursuits.
The NZGCA was formed in 2019 to create a unified voice for all participants and to provide a platform on which to grow the sport for future generations.
Managed upland game bird properties have an important role to play in the wider conservation process. The self-funding of habitat improvement and predator control coupled with improvements in local biodiversity benefits not only game birds but also our treasured native species. Pest control is a major part of a gamekeeper’s role and is vital to the success of game bird habitat.
Our network connects like-minded people throughout the country and around the world. It creates opportunities for those who enjoy working gun dogs in a safe and controlled environment. It builds rural community relationships with passionate people of all ages and connects city dwellers with countryside pursuits.
In addition upland game preserves enhance game bird populations across the country to the benefit of all Fish and Game licensed hunters.
Game birds are a delicious and valuable food resource. Many of our preserves provide feathers to local marae and colleges to enable opportunities for traditional weaving to create Kaku huruhuru, kakahu that is adorned with feathers of manu.
In recent times the proposed Wildlife Act review has created a strong focus for the NZGCA. Our Board members have invested significant time and effort collaborating with Fish and Game and DoC to develop a long term workable framework that will allow a sustainable game bird population for all license holders. We have sought legal counsel to ensure our proposal and interests are well represented.
Our collective voice will be strengthened once you join our community.
We aim to represent upland game bird sport in a professional manner with standards set for our members covering safety in the field and in the operation of upland game preserves. By guidance to practical animal welfare standards for the population of birds bred, reared and released onto private land as well as advice on predator control.

As someone who’s spent nine years running Motu River Jet and over 30 years in LandSAR, I know firsthand how vital a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) is when you’re out in the bush or on the water. One of the best bits of kit I’ve come across is the ACR ResQLink 410 RLS, and let me tell you, it’s a game-changer.
This little unit is packed with features. It’s buoyant (perfect for waterbased adventures), has GPS and Galileo GNSS for pinpoint accuracy, and blasts out a 406 MHz distress signal with a 121.5 MHz homing signal. But here’s the kicker: the Return Link Service. When you activate it, a blue light flashes to confirm your signal’s been received. In a crisis, that little light is worth its weight in gold. It’s also got built-in strobe and infrared lights for low-visibility rescues, runs for over 24 hours, and has a 5-year battery life. All this for $689.99 – not bad for something that could save your life.
I use the ResQLink 410 RLS on everything – hunting trips, boating missions, tramping – you name it. It’s tough, simple to use, and doesn’t need a subscription. I recently tested both the NeoLoft and Trail ProLite mats by Therm-a-Rest and was impressed by their performance. As a side sleeper, I found both mats surprisingly comfortable, even on uneven terrain.

I have always been a bit of a fan of their rifles and I already have a couple in the safe. My first impression of this rifle, visually, is that it is very smart looking, but the real test for me is does it shoot as good as it looks?
After mounting a Leupold vx5 3-15x44 scope it was time to hit the range. I decided to run the Hornady 175 gr ELDX 7mm PRC with a DPT suppressor on the front. After sighting it in and becoming comfortable behind the rifle it was time to see how well it performed. It was no surprise that I was not disappointed. I shot three shot groups, which were all under a 1” group at a hundred metres. The bolt is smooth to open and close and has a good half cock. The trigger is crisp and responsive, and has a pull range from 1.5 to 3 pounds, which can be adjusted with an Allen key not requiring a gunsmith. The Bergara crest carbon uses the CURE barrel which has stainless strands embedded in the carbon weave. This helps to dissipate heat from the barrel.

some trips are planned months in advance, only to face delays or cancellations. Others, like our recent adventure up the Motu River, finally come to life and make the wait worthwhile. This November, the stars aligned for an unforgettable 24 hours off the grid with Alan, his son Shane, grandkids Jack and Annie, and Ant, who travelled all the way from Auckland to join us.
Our journey began with a jet boat ride up the Motu River, cutting through rugged landscape, every bend revealing fresh country and opportunity.
Setting up camp with Orson’s new tents added a touch of ease to the experience, leaving us more time to soak in our surroundings. The kids were thrilled, and their excitement was uncontrollable as they explored this remote slice of New Zealand.
That evening, we embarked on a hunt, immersing ourselves in the rhythm of
the backcountry. While the pursuit of adventure and/or protein is a cornerstone of these trips, it was the little moments—Jack wading through knee high water and searching for clues like hoof prints in the riverbed or Annie remarking on how quiet it was in the bush at night as we chatted around the fire—that captured the essence of the adventure.
The gems that often occur on these trips are unhurried conversations around the campfire and a chance to connect with friends and family in a way that’s uninterrupted from modern society and the noise it carries with it. The kids revelled in the freedom of the outdoors, learning to appreciate the natural world and the deeper connection it fosters within a family.
The next day, the itinerary was equally fulfilling. Fishing, rafting and in just 24 hours, we managed to pack in an array of experiences that showcased the magic of the wilderness. From the thrill of the jet boat to the serenity of floating downriver, every activity reminded us of the joy and balance that nature provides.

Christchurch is a great place to either base yourself in or use as a launching pad for visiting Canterbury or the South Island. Having an international airport serving the needs of national and international travelers, and the biggest Hunting & Fishing New Zealand store in the country is a fantastic start to any South Island adventure!
The southern Alps are a true natural beauty which attracts those wanting to fish, hunt, bike, ski, tramp, camp or simply drive through them on their way to the next adventure, you can be in the surrounds of the Arthurs Pass National Park within a 2-hour drive of Christchurch City.
We have many options for the freshwater angler in Canterbury, with year-round seasons that always leave somewhere to fish. Our high-country river trout fishing is world class with the chance of sight fishing to trophy brown trout a real possibility. That doesn’t mean that our lakes are lacking, they certainly hold great numbers of fish, with many easily accessed and can also make a great stopover on your journey to the next destination. Whilst the last couple of seasons have been tough, we have a sea-run salmon fishery in canterbury too, a majestic fish that is a true trophy to catch. Travelling a little further will get you into the Mackenzie Country where you will find the hydro canals and the chance to catch some of the biggest trout you could ever imagine encountering, and again some magnificent scenery. In the saltwater scene the summer sees our coast come alive with surf casters, out there chasing rig, gurnard, kahawhai and the elusive elephant fish. Pegasus Bay also sees good numbers of king fish through these warmer months, mostly targeted from boats, but they are increasingly getting caught from the rocks around Banks Peninsula too. Further offshore fishing out of Lyttleton or Akaroa we have blue cod, trumpeter, gurnard, perch and hapuka as tasty target species, and you can get the dive gear on or set a pot or two for crayfish as well. Freediving

is becoming more popular in our region, and the likes of Akaroa Harbor and the greater Banks peninsular area providing the chance of nabbing a crayfish, a feed of paua or spearing butterfish and moki.
Hunting is plentiful in our region, from knocking over a pig or deer for the freezer or bbq to chasing trophy red stags on both public and private land, busting a few bunnies or opossums, heading into the Alps for a chamois or the magnificent bull tahr, to game bird hunting for ducks, quail or pheasants, we have everything on offer. March and April sees an influx of local and international hunters arriving in town and heading out looking for that stag of a lifetime, roaring red stags are definitely an exciting hunt! Deeper into the winter months the focus moves to the king of the alps, bull tahr, a true trophy that is found in some of the most awesome country you will ever see. As far as gamebird hunting goes we do not have high numbers of quail or pheasant in our Fish and Game region, but what we lack there we make up for with ducks. Our waterfowl season runs from the first weekend in May until the last weekend in July, so one of the longer seasons in the country, and offering big water hunting on the likes of Lake Ellesmere and our larger braided rivers attracts hunters from across the country and around the world.
As you have read, we have more than enough to keep the outdoorsy persons entertained out of Christchurch, but if you’re not as outdoorsy as some we also have some great eateries, entertainment and attractions in and around our city. Walking and biking tracks are plentiful both near town and around the likes of Banks Peninsula, with some very cool accommodation to be

LT with me – and can confidently say I think this tent might just have it all. Choosing a mostly sheltered part of the bay we pitched the Hubba Hubba LT on the sandy shore. The late December weather was mild, but we did encounter light onshore breezes and a lot of moisture in the air overnight. I found the Hubba Hubba LT to be impressively easy to put up. After pegging out the tent floor, the single interlocking pole unit snapped effortlessly into the tent body. The widened ridge pole design meant there was ample space to comfortably seat two adults upright inside. There were plenty of internal mesh storage pockets which helped to keep torches and

Our Ascent Pro 800 sleeping bag is made of 650FP European Duck Down with Nikwax Fluorocarbon-Free Hydrophobic finish. Down is naturally breathable, which makes it very comfortable to wear, but this comes with a drawback – it can absorb moisture. This moisture can overload the fibres, or cause them to stick together, stripping the down of its insulative properties. To mitigate this effect, Rab applies a Nikwax water repellent “hydrophobic” treatment to the down. This treatment significantly improves the performance of the down by preventing the clusters from absorbing moisture and helping it to retain its loft. Even if the down does get wet, the treatment speeds up drying time and helps it regain its loft quickly —which is a must in unpredictable conditions.

Any advice to someone purchasing a sleeping bag for their first big adventure?
Make sure you choose the right sleeping system for the conditions you are going to face. An alpine expedition doesn’t require the same sleeping bag and mat than a summer expedition.
Comfort ratings are especially important when choosing the right gear. The comfort rating indicates the minimum temperature when one can sleep in normal thermals and be comfortable for a night’s sleep. The limit of comfort rating is the temperature where someone can sleep with additional clothing but might be slightly cold throughout the night. The former premises had long since been outgrown. When the opportunity arose to join the new development, the team eagerly embraced it, signing on alongside established retailers such as Repco, Chemist Warehouse, Cracker Jack, Animates, and Super Cheap, in addition to The Warehouse, Noel Leeming, and Mitre 10.
With Warkworth's population experiencing rapid growth, the relocation was seen as a a great move in an ever-evolving retail landscape in the region.
The new store, now boasting an impressive 800sqm of retail space, opened its doors on December 6th. The relocation process, from packing down the old store to setting up the new one, was accomplished within just two weeks—a testament to the dedication and hard work of the Warkworth Hunting & Fishing NZ team.

Our Selection Explained - Terms and Conditions
The products listed in this catalogue represent what is on order at the time of printing and what we plan to have collectively available through Hunting & Fishing New Zealand® stores nationwide with reserve supplies available from our importers where possible. We have ordered what we believe will be sufficient stock to last us 2 months from the date of publication. Specials and close-out deals however are limited by stock availability. Hunting & Fishing New Zealand® will not be responsible for lack of stock through supplier problems. We strive to print correct colours and images but cannot guarantee that they will always be a 100% correct representation of the products advertised. The climatic and geographic diversity of New Zealand makes stocking everything in each store impractical, however each store does carry as full a range as is practical and financially possible.
