Muhammad

Quli Qutub Shah THE FOUNDING FATHER OF HYDERABAD -Mohammed Taha Faridi

HyderabadiBAATAN | November 2013

Often commemorated for his greatest achievements “Hyderabad and Charminar; the most popular amongst the Qutub Shahi rulers, the Founding Father Mohammed Quli Qutub Shahthe fifth Qutub Shahi is often known or understood through folklore and legend rather than facts. Why not, his persona and works were such. He founded the great city of Hyderabad (as a sign of love), was a great architect and a poet of Arabic, Persian, Urdu, Deccani (an industrial dialect of Urdu) and Telugu (read his Diwan- a collection of poems). He had inherited a large and densely populated kingdom. Under him, the kingdom centred at Golconda reached its peak and became an attraction for the traders from all over the world. Raza Ali Khan enlists diamonds, printed cloth, steel and other commercial activities that brought him prosperity to raise a structure such as Charminar. Despite being a populist; much less is aptly known about his life in depth.

As the name Qutub Shah suggests he belonged to the Qutub Shahi family. Some say that his grandfather Sultan Quli Qutub al-Mulk was a Turk (that’s why he was usually seen with the Turkish slaves of the Bahmani ruler) and some consider him to be a descendant of Mirza Jahan Shah the assassinated . He procured power when the Bahmani kingdom of the famous region of Telangana began to twitch and cripple. He was a respected military officer during the Bahmani reign and for his works was made the subedar of Telangana with Golconda as capitol. In 1518 C.E, he crowned himself and South India saw the rise of a new and powerful dynasty only to fall to the Mughals hundred and seventy one years later. After being in the throne for twenty five years, Sultan Quli Qutub al-Mulk was assassinated in a plot fashioned by his own son Jamsheed Quli Qutub Shah who went on to become the second ruler of the dynasty.

The Founding Father Mohammed Quli Qutub Shah was one of three three sons of Ibrahim Quli Qutub Shah (the youngest son of Sultan Quli Qutub al-Mulk, who ascended the throne after his nephew Subhan Quli Qutub Shah son of Jamsheed Quli Qutub Shah). Farishta says he (Mohammed Quli Qutub Shah) was the eldest of Ibrahim Quli and Wiki considers him the youngest. Mohammed Quli Qutub Shah had a good relation with his brothers and loved them dearly till the end of his life. He never apparently was antagonised nor distressed by them. He was married to Isfahan’s (Iranian province) Shah Mirza’s daughter. Later on, Mohammed Quli became ferocious with his father-in-law and had him locked up. Few days later, he forgave Shah Mirza and ordered him to be send to Isfahan for the rest of his life but the exiled expired whilst still travelling on boat towards Isfahan. Hayat Bakshi Begum was Mohammed Quli’s only daughter; who according to Raza was married to his nephew and successor Sultan Mohammed Qutub Shah. But Farishta says that his daughter (doesn’t name her) was married off to the king of Iran Shah Abbas’s son when the latter had sent a proposal for her. - Mohammed Taha Faridi

TOMBS -Mohammed Taha Faridi

Hyderabad State aristocracy has had a family unknown to many who under the British raj were richer than the average Indian maharajah, maintained their own court, and had their own army of three to four thousand strong private soldiers. The Paigahs - A family which had matrimonial ties with the Nizam of Hyderabad. The paigah tombs is the graveyard or burial ground of the Paigahs. The Paigahs were nobles (and an aristocratic family as everybody who’s written on them stresses) during the golden Asaf Jahi era in Hyderabad right from the first Asaf Jah (or Nizam). Even though their main job was to maintain the Nizam’s army (which brought to them a fortune); they were considered second only to the Nizam (Asaf Jah).

The place where this family lies is no ordinary one. It is, in fact, a marvellous piece of art and style which is a blend of Asaf Jahi and Rajasthani architectures. It also seems to have a European influence in it. Many experts from all over the world have come to see it. Every architect who has seen the tombs has admired their stucco work, marbles, structure, construction, materials, paint and artwork etc. It looks as if the Paigahs wanted their tombs to be a source of admiration and respect apart from their works, achievements, ranks and property.

The tombs were designed by the local artists. Generations of Paigahs rest here including Shams al-Umarā (Shams-ul-Umaraa, sun for rulers), Viqār al-Umarā (Viqaar-ul-Umaraa, the pride of rulers) and Sir Āsman Jah. American architect Harish Lalvani says that the geometry of the Paigah Tombs is unique and is not to be found anywhere else around the globe.

The condition and maintenance of these tombs nowadays is not quite well and this exemplar of excellence along with the areas and roads surrounding it is one of the victims to negligence by the government authorities.

Bas Tum Ajao! by Saad Khan Khushiyan hazaar rang mein milti hain Kabhi muqtasar kabhi sadaa ke liye In hazaar rango mein ek rang jo sabse khoobsurat hota hai Wo ek pardesi parinde ka apne watan laut ke aana.. Hum apne watan se meelon duur Barson ki muddat ko anjaam dene per bhi. Ek mohabbat apne watan ki Ek khushi jahan lautne ki Jo humse kabhi duur nahi hoti. Koi saudi, koi dubai, koi us,koi london. Duniya ke her mulk mein hyderabadiyan basey hain. Lekin jab hum ko apne mulk lautne ka khayal aata hai. Phir humara yahan rukna namumkin sa hojata hai..

Ek haseen ehsaas, Jab hum ye mehsoos karte hain. Ke humare apno ki aankhein humare intezaar mein raah takrahi hain. Kahin apne se choto’n ki farmaishiein. Kahin bado’n ki khwahishein. Kisi ka ajwa khajoor talab karna. Kisi rishtedar ke liye zamzam ki khwahish. Ghar ke buzurg ke payro ki malish ke liye zayetoon ka tel, Hum umar dost-o-bhaiyon ke liye perfumes ke bottles. College jane wale bhai ke liye galaxy mobile. Wo chocolates, chewing gum bin bole bhi lejana hoga. Agar kahin kuch bhool gaya to phir ek saal tak manana hoga. Hazaar lamho se kehta hun, Bas ek lamhe mein samaa jao. Beshumaar apno ki farmaisho ke beech. Jab koi shaqs ka kehta hai”bas tum ajao”

Wo lamhe wo dino ka guzarna, ek haseen si khushi ke kareeb laata hai. Ek arsa tanhayiyon ke baad ye marhala apne wujood ka ehsaas dilaata hai.. Koi saj sanvar ke baitha hota hai intezaar mein apne mehboob ke, Wo haathon mein mehendi, Wo kangan ka shor, Wo ghadi do ghadi ayina dekhna, Wo ghar ke fard se poochna “main kaisi lagrahi hun” Wo har dastak pe bechain hojana. Wo her aahat ko mehsoos karna. Wo khudko pal pal bekaraar karna. Bedaar aankho se intezaar karna. Sabki apni apni khushiyo mein, Ammi ka khayal alag hota hai Sab ki kaifiyat alag hoti hai Her baat mein ammi ka khayaal alag hota hai. Wo saare ghar ki safayi ko dekhna, Wo apna ek pasandeeda pakwan aaj bhi yaad rakhna Wo gaadi ki marammat, Wo pani bottle ko aajbhi takiye ke baad rakhna.. Intezaar ki ghadiyan bhi kuch isqadar taweel hoti hain. Na din guzarta hai na raat hoti hai Her pehen apni khud se yehi baat hoti hai….

THE FESTIVAL OF

LIGHTS It’s the simple things in life. Watching fireworks go off is something that transcends all ages, creeds, nationalities, genders, etc. etc. etc. etc. (to whomever I may offend); especially when you are not holding an electronic device. Whatever the people who raised you have told you about why people celebrate Deepavali/Diwali/whatever you call it in your household, it is really of very little importance. There is a wonderful social aspect to all festivals. Regardless of what demographic you fall into, the opportunity that is afforded by a festival to find social relief from your daily routine (or the other way around if you are one of those crazy, introverted, creative types who happen to work in a public field) is wonderful. Add fireworks to that, and baby, you’ve got gold (or onions- I wrote this a long time ago).

HyderabadiBAATAN | November 2013

Where Diwali really excels is it fine tunes this social aspect by not leaving anyone out. There is not a person I know who does not find at least half an hour to watch fireworks explode with people. Even if they do not want to, they physically cannot do anything else. It simply is too noisy to do anything else properly. You literally have nothing better to do than to look forward to the annual 10k ladi at 10 p.m. Like in all relationships, it is these quirks that matter. The neighbour whose sweets don’t taste too good. The neighbour whose food is excellent. The Tamil household which celebrates it a day early. The weird friend who only burns ‘snakes’ and nothing else. The uncle who has young kids and should practice more caution while launching rockets but never is (and will be for that matter. The elder harping on about how modern day kids are less passionate about it or how the smoke is good and kills mosquitos. So don’t force yourself against it. Give in. Talk to the weird uncle in your neighbourhood. Hang out with your ‘gang’. Hit on the girl you have no shot with. Burn your ex’s house down. Drive on the roads like a madman. It’s the simple things in life.
