Every year a 7-weeks cricketing extravaganza called the IPL; short for Indian Premier League is held in India which by virtue of its ensemble of cricketing superheroes leaves an indelible mark on the cricket crazy nation’s minds.

and the latest Indian batting sensation Shikhar Dhawan at the top of the order and Cameron White, the skipper and a vital cog in the middle order, the rest of the middle order comprised of Biplab Samantray and Hanuma Vihari.

In its 6th year now, it captivated the entire nation in its frenzy but one team which managed to capture everybody’s attention above all else was the Sunrisers Hyderabad.A new franchise under the tutelage of media baron and industrialist Mr. Kalanithi Maran, owner of Sun Network, shone like no other team this season. The transfer of ownership from Deccan Chronicle worked wonders for the new franchise as they not only won consistently, they were consistently in the top 4 all season.

Lankan Thishara Pereira and St. Lucian Darren Sammy filled the all-rounders slot to the T. Who could forget Darren Sammy’s brilliant all round abilities and his pacifier dance dedicated to his new born daughter. The local flavour in the form of a quartet comprised of Akshat Reddy, Ashish Reddy, Hanuma Vihari and Prashant Padmanabhan who rose up to the ocassion whenever required.

While T20 regarded as a batsman’s game, the Hyderabadi Risers showed the batsmen their place and commanded the respect they deserved on and off the field. While the batting worked in fits and starts, the bowlers including the Protean import Dale Steyn along with Ishant Sharma formed a lethal bowling pair, the spin department not to be left behind had the guile and experience of Amit Mishra and shrewdness in the form of Karan Sharma. The batting though good wasnt formidable enough to intimidate the opposition with . The likes of seasoned campaigner Parthiv Patel

A special mention of the great Waqar Younis who made the amazing turnaround possible and the head coach Tom Moody under whose wardship the risers rose up.A team devoid of any cricketing superstars bringing down the high and mighty of International Cricket, a team lording over batsmen in a batsman’s game is stuff what dreams are made of. We give an ode to the team which defied predictions and turned cricket pundits wrong. To quote Simon Helmot “Thanks Sunrisers for rewarding IPL-6” and as the name suggests ‘A new sun has risen’. See you Sunrisers Hyderabad in April 2014.

The Magnificent

Chowmahalla Palace -Yamani Bin Zubair

Chowmahalla Palace, also called as Chowmohallat Palace (4 places), was a palace belonging to the Nizams of Hyderabad and the center of Asaf Jahi dynasty . This was also the official residence of the Nizam. Chowmahalla Palace acquires its name from the persian and arabic root words Chahar & Mahalat. Chahar means four and Mahalat (plural of Mahal) means palaces. The name itself means that this royal palace signifies four palaces or Chowmahallat. From the accession of the Nizams to the Governor General receptions, all ceremonial functions were hosted in Chowmohalla Palace.

The constrution was initiated by Salabat Jung in the year 1959. It was completed during the Afzal ad-Dawlah period during the reign of Asaf Jah V. The Nizam ensured the completed on this palace between 1857 and 1869. Believed to bemodeled on the palace of The Shah of Iran, the palace oozes style and elegance. Till today, the magnificient palace stands as an epitome of architectural elegance and influence. The Palace consists of two magnificent courtyards-the northern and southern courtyard. It also claims of the grand Khilwat (the Durban Hall) gardens, equipped with beautiful fountains. Originally covering 45 acres (180,000 m2) of land, only 14 acres (57,000 m2) remain today.

HyderabadiBAATAN | June 2013

13

The Southern courtyard signifies European neo-classical architecture style. This is the oldest part of the palace. It consists of four beautiful palaces, Afzal Mahal, Mahtab Mahal, Tahniyat Mahal and Aftab Mahal. Of all the palaces, Afzal Mahal exudes the royal splendor of the Nizams of Hyderabad. A two storeyed building with a European facade of Corinthian columns,it is also called as the crown of Chowmahalla palace. The royal guests of the Nizams were treated at the Afzal Mahal.

The Northern courtyard has been restored for the public to view. The Bara Imam - a long corridor of rooms on the east side- housed the administrative wing of the Nizams. Shishe-Alat (literally the mirror image) was once used as guest room for officials accompanying visiting dignitaries. The Clock Tower houses the Khliwat Clock which was installed when the palace was built. The clock has been ticking away ever since. The Council Hall was often the home to official meetings between the Nizam and important officials and dignitaries. It houses a rare collection of priceless books and manuscripts. Roshan Bangla was named after the Roshan Begum, the mother of the sixth Nizam of Hyderabad. This exquisite part of the northern courtyard was also home to the sixth Nizam.

Khilwat Mubarak (The Grand Durban Hall), the pièce de rÊsistance, is believed to be the heart of Chowmahalla Palace. This is the seat of the Asif Jahi Dynasty. The construction was influenced by Mughal architecture, signified by the domes and arches. Its ornate stucco work is believed to be influenced by Persian architecture. This grand pillared Durban Hall has a pure marble floor which hosts the Royal seat, fondly known as Takht-eNishan.

Princess Esra has spearheaded the restoration initiative to restore glamour and splendor to the halls of Chowmahalla Palace. Currently, it is one of the most sought out venues for select individuals and corporates for hosting their dinners, receptions and cultural evenings. Chowmahalla is a venue that’s clearly a symbol of exclusivity, and offers an exquisite experience guests will never forget.

CHABUTRA TALES

The hyderabadi guide to

being laidback Part One -Yamani Bin Zubair

By appearences all Hyderabadi’s including myself look very preoccupied with work, little do you know that we are currently multi-procrastinating, never concerened or not bothered. Wonder how can someone do all that, Lets take a poll to decide where you stand while dealing with day to day life. a) Perfectionist b) Overachiever c) Workaholic d) Worrier Whether you have chosen any of the above answers or not, you’ve probably envied people who cut through life like a sword, smoothly never bothered about what’s in store for them. Perhaps they might not be you ideal choice for motivation, they might not be the perfect example of accomplishment, but they do seem content. If you happen to be on the other side of the spectrum, always working your ass off, trying to find your place in life, never satisfied -- Here’s Hyderabad’s Guide on being laid back.

Ek Time pe Ek kaam Most hyderabadi’s agree that when we plan our day ahead we mentally note the things we have to do, however we give our undivided attention to one task and end up getting stuck trying to complete it. If we have a list of things to buy and get home by 1 PM and we dont, chances are we got caught up with an old friend and decided to give up on the grocery list, altogether for the next 4 hrs. Finally we arrive at home for supper with a welcome of kings from our mothers - “Areeeeeeey, kothmir laane subha gaya tha, ab raat ku teri naak main daalon woh kothmir ka katta. “ SITUATIONAL RESPONSE : Lite Liyo.

When hyderabadis have tea it gives them bigger wings than redbull, However when we have it with a couple of friends we end up paying for 12 cups of tea, 23 osmania biscuits, 10 samosas, 12 thumbs up. We might have started talking at 9 am and we’ll be around till 4pm. We dont take breaks while doing our regular chores to grab a cup of tea, We take breaks from our tea sessions to do our regular chores. SITUATIONAL RESPONSE: Abhi Atun, Yainch Raho Hotal Pe.

K a u n k a r t e y eh When we have high standards, they have their own place. But everything we do, we do it with planning. POORI PILANNING. which requires time and effort, even before the task is carried out. We never allow perfectionism to become the enemy of our potential. That’s why when hyderabadi’s do something, they do it at their own convenience, at their own time. Hum Aisich Hai, Pilan Karke Light Lelete. As hyderabad’s we calculate time independent of any event that happens in past, present or future. I say : I’ll be right there in 5 mins - Chances are I just woke up and wont show my face for atleast 2 hrs. SITUATIONAL RESPONSE: Kal Merku Rukaya Tha Ab Isku Rukatu

Yeh DEKHO!

GHANCHAKKAR With a kind of plot which lends itself easily to hilarious shenanigans and enough name talent behind and in front of the camera, this should be a solid flick (but you never know in the fickle business of cinema). 54

HyderabadiBAATAN | June 2013

SHORTCUT ROMEO Susi Ganeshan has made this movie before and it turned out to be pretty decent. At the very least, this should be pretty good. Don’t know if it will cross the language threshold though.

IDDARAMMAYILATHO Puri Jagannadh, Allu Arjun and two gorgeous leading ladies-you won’t care if the movie is any good or not, do you? Odds are you’ve already seen it by the time you’ve read this. Here’s hoping it is thoroughly entertaining.

56

HyderabadiBAATAN | June 2013

Yeh DEKHO!

PAISA Oddly enough, it shares a leading lady with Iddarammayilatho (no, I’m not her agent). Nani has been doing very well for himself and Krishna Vamsi’s 90’s heavy-handed style might hit home this time.

MONSTERS UNIVERSITY

After a couple of missteps with Cars 2 and Brave, it would be great if Pixar could get back on the right track (although it certainly won’t equal the extraordinary run it made in the 2000’s). Monsters U does look promising though; hopefully it delivers on said promise.

MAN OF STEEL Snyder just won the internet with that trailer, didn’t he? He did the same with that Sucker Punch trailer and look at what that led to. The movie does look absolutely gorgeous tough. Goyer’s take on the Supes mythology (fanboys, Nolan is producer in name only-he hired Snyder, that’s about it; he gets story credit because he was in the room when Goyer pitched his idea) sounds fascinating actually. All things considered, this might actually be really good.

CHAMPIONS TROPHY S A NS T H E C H A M P I ONS As the IPL extravaganza comes to an end, the focus now shifts to the international arena with the ICC Champions Trophy to be held in England from the 6th of June. This tournament has receded in importance over the years and has lost many a follower. The advent of the twenty over format of the game has greatly contributed to the decline of fifty over format and Champions Trophy being more or less a smaller version of the World cup has lost its significance. The ICC has decided to put an end to this tournament in the future-this will be the final edition of the Champions Trophy. The teams fielded by various countries bear a depleted look, with some of the more established players missing in action. India is without Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Zaheer Khan, etc. South Africa is without Graeme Smith and Jacques Kallis. Similarly other nations have big players missing in action. From the point of view of the Indian team, we are looking at a transition period and the English conditions would provide a good test for the younger players to prove their mettle and cement their places in the Indian team. A good performance in these conditions can never go unnoticed. The likes of Amit Mishra and Irfan Pathan who will be making a comeback to the Indian team would be eager to seize the opportunity. With the conditions in England assisting swing bowling, Irfan Pathan could be the man to watch out for.

The India-Pakistan clash is an enticing proposition;another chapter will be written in one of cricket’s greatest rivalries. You can rest assured that people from either side of the border will be hooked to the television screen on the 15th of June, hoping for their team to emerge victorious.

The spot fixing scandal has raised doubts and suspicions in the minds of people, but a few rotten eggs does not mean all eggs in the basket are spoilt. People with questionable morals and character exist everywhere. They need to be punished severely and dealt with an iron hand to preserve the credibility and integrity of the game. The Champions Trophy will unite the players who have been playing against each other in the IPL. They will shed their regional and franchisee colors and turn up together in blue. The fans who would have been in a dilemma whether to support Dhoni or Kohli or any of the other Indian stars in the IPL will now have the opportunity to cheer for all of them together, to cheer for our nation, India. Dhoni has been phenomenal as a captain and has every trophy in his cabinet except the Champions Trophy. With this being the final edition, this is his only opportunity to complete his trophy cabinet. Let us unite from the length and breadth of our country, from Jaipur to Chennai, from Mumbai to Kolkata and cheer the boys on. Bring that cup home.
