Irfan Aziz 12

KNOW YOUR FELLOW HYDERABADI
A
futuristic approach to the present-meet the simple yet powerful entrepreneur of our times. 38 year old Irfan Aziz, born in bhongir, Andhra Pradesh brought up in India; a double MBA from London has his dreams set on the right track. His ancestral lineage includes notable advocates; his father, M.A Akhil a highly reputed attorney in the high court of AP and his grandfather Late Mr Md Aleemuddin also an attorney, Sahakara Bhushan awardee who was personally awarded by the president for his services in various fields. This has greatly helped him inculcate impeccable quality of values possessed by intelligence and necessity. His educational qualifications include masters in business management from a B-school run by AIG; this triggered a passion in him to start working as a marketing executive in the States. Working meticulously in marketing helped him grow professionally and become one of the most sought after directors of business development in the corporate world. Armed with his concerted efforts he assisted Dr. Vijayunni (IAS and former Census commissioner of India) in caste census back in 2011 which is still benefiting many families below poverty line till date. His assistance to Mr K Rehman khan (minorities’ affairs minister) gave him a chance to discuss the 12th five year budget
plan for minorities and Muslim MP’s cutting across party lines, he played a vital role in acquiring the approval of the commissionarate. He had reformed Women SGH groups in Andhra Pradesh with the help of Mr. S.P Tucker IAS, Principal Secretary, Planning. When he’s not spearheading divergent teams he usually prefers to sweat it out on the cricket field. He holds the membership of “Dorking Cricket Club” in Surrey, U.K. He has captained the Indian blues team in six nation diversity cup in Detroit, USA back in 2008. With reasonable quantity of accomplishments in a short time he can surely be misjudged to be flamboyant; reality has a different story to tell. You’d feel suitably humble in his company; he holds an aura of honesty and his simplicity combined with an outright attitude will leave you enchanted. So what made him leave the United States and come back to India? “Leaving a high paid corporate job and giving back to my country, which has given me so much, was the least I could do”, pat comes the reply from his beaming face. He continues, “When I joined marketing, I was sure as to what to expect from life. It isn’t a piece of cake even, if you hail from a high profile family, you have to make your own mark in the society and that’s what I did”.

After getting his Masters degree in business administration he worked in different organizations, spearheading them, often learning from them and contributing in a big way. But he was rather unsatisfied with the way things were. Winning one of the biggest engagements in animation from Mother’s Garden INC, California, a contract worth a whopping 5 million (which is expected to grow to 50 million USD in the years to come) and leading the sales team and acquiring a contract as the sole provider for The Directorate of Information and Research in Texas (US) for a MNC are amongst his many achievements. Irfan seems to have acquired the perfect aptitude for obtaining intricate proposals, proving himself time and time again. So, what does he want to do after moving back to India? “Every man has to keep on moving through life and that’s what I did” is what he says about his decision to return to India even though he was doing great overseas. “It’s just a selfless gesture from my side. Doing something for my country is the least thing I can do from my side; I have moved here for good, the hurdles and problems that I went through I don’t want anyone else to go through and with the aim of helping people in my country I came back. I have planned to open a group of educational institution which is almost done under the name of ‘Adeen Educational Trust’ which aims to impart knowledge and education among the needy ones.” He says with conviction. Today we live in a world where superheroes are a work of fiction; in times of dire situations we wish one existed for even a single minute. What we need are men who can change the world and strive to make it a better place and Irfan seems promising. He knows where he’s comes from, but more importantly where he wants to take us. -Yamani Bin Zubair

Hyderabad’s heritage reflects its culture and tradition through the sites around the city. One such site is located at one of the suburbs of Hyderabad, 10 kms away from all the din and bustle of the city. Maula Ali is famous for the Maula Ali dargah built during the Asif Jaahi period dedicated in reverence to Hazrat Ali (A.s), the fourth Islamic caliph. Also called as the Commander of the Faithful (Amir al-Mu’minin) Hazrat Ali’s influence has been extremely important throughout Islamic history. Known for his unyielding devotion towards Islam, his stature is central to mystical traditions like Sufism. Maula Ali is recognized as one of the eleven heritage sites of Hyderabad by the Heritage Conservation of Hyderabad. Despite mostly consisting of rocky terrain, Maula Ali has managed to acquire commercialization. The most interesting part of Maula Ali is the hillock opposite to it also referred to as “Qadam -e- Rasul”. Legend has it that Mohammad Shakrullah Rahan, a servant to the Asif Jahi, supposedly deposited various sacred relics belonging to Prophet Mohammed (Pbuh). Since then Maula has been revered by its inhabitants.

Maula Ali is a serene hill overlooking the city. At the foothill the palm impression of Imam Ali is installed. It is said that Nawab Sayyid Jamsheed Ali Khan (ibne Qaisar jang) installed a sandalwood tablet which bears the beautiful quranic verses of the “Ayat-al-qursi” engraved in it. On the eve of thirteenth rajjab (islamic calender) this wooden tablet also called as “panja-e-mubarak” (auspicious hand print) was installed in the presence of Naserud-daula the fourth Nizam of Hyderabad. The sandalwood tablet bears the signature of Jamsheed Ali Khan and the fourth Nizam of Hyderabad at the bottom. Engraved in fine nastaliq script, the tablet is a beautiful relic that leaves its viewer awestruck.

Maula Ali is probably one of the oldest inhabited places in the city. Iron Age burial sites belonging to the megalithic age have been excavated in Maula Ali. Under the reign of Nizam, the then Department of Archeology carried out an excavation in 1935 to find archaic burial sites at Maula Ali. Back in the day, Maula Ali was also known for the “Hyderabad race course which is now situated at Malakpet. Maula Ali was also famous for the open prison that was opened in 1954.

Maula Ali Hill has acquired its synonymy to serenity. The top of the hill holds a panoramic view of the city with the stars shining bright above and the city lights dazzling below. A flight of 600 stairs helps you get there but once there this beautiful view makes the uphill struggle worthwhile.

KRIS
GETHIN THE transformation specialist to Hrithik Roshan, John Abaraham, Mahesh Babu and many more in an exclusive interview with Hyderabadi Baatan
On Independence Day Kris woke up at 5 am, took a jog at Juhu beach and raised his watery coconut and saluted India, his new home away from home. That morning Kris Gethin did an intense 45 minute DTP workout with John Abraham, The following afternoon he’s talking to me. He is a qualified sports therapist, professional natural bodybuilder, author of the bestseller - Body by Design, deputy editor of the Bodybuilding.com Digital Publishing Group, spokesmodel for Bodybuilding.com, He’s put together a band named “Imperfect Intruder”. His hardcore video trainer series has already grossed a whopping 9 million views in 2011 and is still counting. From having a healthy dinner on named after him at Suzettes, Mumbai, to training and transforming some of the biggest names in the entertainment business like Hrithik Roshan, Mahesh Babu and now John Abraham. Kris Gethin juggles so many hats with élan. A role model to many, Kris Gethin talks with Hyderabadi Baatan in this exclusive interview.
Welcome to HB thank you so much for doing this interview with me, can you give our readers a brief background on how you got into fitness ? I got into fitness by accident really. When I was racing motocross, I was coming down with a lot of injuries and was spending too much time in the hospital. I was more off the track than I was on the track, in the end I kinda lost my sponsorship and that kinda got me a bit depressed, through that depression came a lot of partying. Through that partying came a lot of binge eating, I was basically neglecting myself and putting on a lot of weight. This was affecting my asthma. I was bed bound a lot of the time because of my back injury for which I went through osteopaths, chiropractors, massage therapists and everything like that until I found that weight training actually helps alleviate the strain off my spine and muscles and I kinda got hooked onto it. Then I sought education for three years until I became qualified as an international sports therapist. Then I pursued training people on board cruise liners out of the US, Mexico. Then I moved to Australia and opened my own fitness centre there for several years. It was during that time I started writing and sending articles to publications and that took me to the US where I was writing for FLEX and Wieder Publications. I was a writer and a photographer for a while and then I published my own magazine. I was competing at the
32
HyderabadiBAATAN | August 2013
time for Natural bodybuilding and I managed to get 2nd in the world championship 2006. Then I got offered a position as Editor-in-chief at Bodybuilding. com. I wasn’t really doing personal training at the time, just editing content, posting content through my video series and writing a couple of books. Hrithik Roshan had read my book “body by design”. he kept asking people in the industry if there is anybody that could help him since He had suffered a slipped disc and myalgia (muscle pain). And my name kept popping up . He gave me a call and then I came over to work with him initially for twelve weeks but that kept on extending and it’s been about nearly two years now.
You are the author to a book, Body By design, which talk talks about Dynamic transformation principle, could you tell us more about that ? The book is mainly motivational based because I found a lot of books out there that are useful, They help certain people and are useless to others if people don’t have motivation to acquire. To give you an example my father read the “Rich Dad, Poor dad” series and we grew up on a farm with very little money, however he applied that knowledge from the book and invested in this first property and then another, and another and we’ve got over fifty properties. He is somebody that applied that knowledge because he was motivated; 99% of the people out there
aren’t motivated. So the book is predominantly based on motivation – how to provide a support group? How to be transparent with your goals? How to be accountable to be in a crew? Of course there is training and nutrition and supplementation plan within, however the motivation is there to apply that education because you know education out there is absolutely useless through videos, through articles, through books whatever means without motivation to adapt for everybody young, old, female, male doesn’t matter who you are if you want to improve your quality of life right now this is the tool for you to apply, you just got to use the tool. India has a new fascination ! Body transformation and you transformed Hrithik Roshan for Krishh 3, How did you transform Hrithik’s body? I transformed Hrithik’s body exactly how I transformed everyone else’s , A lot of hardwork and a lot of intensity, I was surprised because a lot of people have followed my principles, my plans and have got results just as good as hrithik’s, As soon as hrithiks came out and was put in spotlight here in india, everybody had their doubts, They were like - it must be steroids, it must be photoshopped, it had to be something. I don’t mean there is a lot of insecurity here that is why we’re sticking around to educate these people that you can transform, doesn’t matter (what) culture you’re from, what background you’re from the truth is available, you just need to make smart decisions. What we did with Hrithik was a lil bit more customized, He had injuries, He is very long limbed, He’s got very small bones, So we had to work around these sort of problem areas, but it was very easy in the way that the client are 110% onboard and 110% off,
luckily what we were doing required him to be 110% on, He made my job very easy. We went from his normal 3 meals a day upto 8 meals a day. We did weight training four times a week for 45 minutes per session, and then he did cardiovascular exercise for 20-25 minutes on a daily basis. A lot of that was functional work because we needed to make sure that he was ready for action, he had to play a super hero so you have to feel like one you know.
That sounds great, You also trained Mahesh Babu and he’s a big name is hyderbad. How was your experience working with him ? The similarities between him(Mahesh) and Hrithik are uncanny. You know, mentally they are both exactly the same very 110% very professional, However very humble, they kinda stay out of light they do not want the spotlight, they kinda want to keep to themselves, Very very similar in that regards. However Hrithik, he comes with injuries, he had a lot more natural strength there than Mahesh. He had to push on his strength for muscular development. He got there in
the end and we transformed him for his next movie.
At that time you were working in Hyderabad, tell us about your experience in Hyderabad – the city ? I really liked it in Hyderabad because I’m kind of a loner. I like to spend a lot time by myself. My personal training is only like 5% of my job description. Because I write, I have my own food line; I go around lecturing people with “Physic Elite”, a company where we educate on personal trainings we increase their skill set. You know it was good for me because I would just hang out in the coffee shops, the developed coffee shops like the barista’s and stuff like that. It kinda quite out there I don’t like too much traffic, I don’t like too many people. I get freaked out. It was a lot better out there than Mumbai in that regards. I try to control my environment, whatever environment I’m in. Amongst all the chaos I have my simplicity, I have my schedules and stuff like that but it was good you know, people say it’s hard to train in heat like that but you just drink more coconut water man! Hyderabad lives mostly on high carb, high protein and high fat. Is there a nutrition plan that is specific to the Indian body type ? No and I get this question all the time. Indians I don’t train any different I’ve trained people from Australia, America, Mexico, Italy it doesn’t matter All have the same muscle intrusion, attachments, makes no difference. Your cortisol and hormonal levels are similar. So it makes no difference you know. Regardless of what sort of food you eat you have to change it, I don’t care where 36
HyderabadiBAATAN | August 2013
you come from, you know, Yes you may be adapted to that and that’s why you look a certain way. So that why you have to change things, you have to go for your food planning, your chicken breast, your poultry, and your fish your egg whites, your brown rice, your sweet potatoes, and your oatmeal. Everybody has that in pretty much every country. So you can have your salads you can have your greens and stick to a more frequent regime of eating. More so anything, it isn’t a secret diet or training program it’s the consistence which you keep you know.
We also have a large number of vegetarians, What is the specific change that you would recommend to them so that they can also gain lean muscle mass ? For vegetarians, it’s easy as well you know, you just go for low fat Paneer, Low fat tofu, if some of you eat eggs you can have your egg whites, Your whey protein powders. That’s gonna be your main sources of protein along with your complex carbs as anyone else. HB : While you were working in Hyderabad, I believe you were on a diet ? If you were not, did you get a chance to have our world famous biryani ? KG : I did so, Not this time because I was on a diet. I spent over two months, this was about nine weeks, I was in the film city there. It was Hrithik he was shooting Krishh 3. So I was at that hotel there, and we had biryani sent for from probably the best place in Hyderabad. It was fantastic, I remember even about now, it was very heavy I could feel it the next day, you know. My body was still trying to digest it three days later.
That’s what I’m saying, That’s what hyderabadi’s live on That why they find it difficult for them to get settled. It’s hard to get any energy to get off your arse. It’s so heavy, your body requires so many calories of energy just to try to digest it so it saps away all of your energy to be utilizing for exercise you know.

That’s true ! Also speaking about your food line, are you planning to launch it in India as well? Or is it already there that we don’t know of? No because I got 50 countries asking me the same thing. I really, physically cannot go in to launch the outlet in every country, because it cost me as much to have me shipped here anyways. There are a couple of hubs, Bodybuilding.com is the main one, you know unfortunately in India you got a huge tax and duty, I’m sorry about that. It’s something we have to deal with it I’m afraid it’s really bad. I’ve come up now and created a “Chicken Masala” and “Palak Paneer”, regardless I have a lot of people ordering food here from www. bodybuilding.com so I want to give something specific for the Indian palette as well. Chicken Masala is something you know internationally recognized anyways.
That’s so thoughtful of you. What tips would you give to the beginners out there?
38
HyderabadiBAATAN | August 2013
To beginners, mainly start with something. Just start small. For Instance don’t make unrealistic plans like “Im gonna go to the gym 4 times a week and plus I’m gonna do cardio every morning. Plus I’m gonna eat six meals a day”. Start with about that 20 min walk in the morning, maybe three times a week following that take it up to five. Then maybe you can start doing some exercise at home like pushups, chin-ups and squats. Make introductions to a lot of people who’re gung ho they try to accomplish everything and when they feel like they’re not doing everything a 100% then they kinda just walk out. If they consistently build upon it who try to accomplish. On of my main things that I try to articulate and what I’ve prescribed in the book – BE TRASPARENT. Whatever your goals are tell as many people as possible because then you’re gonna put your sincerity on the line. Nobody wants to lose their sincerity you know. You know if you tell everybody and you fail you gonna feel kinda guilty. You’re
not gonna feel guilty if you keep your goals to yourself so tell as many people as you possibly can.
That’s valuable Advice. What are the supplement must haves that you personally recommend? Supplement must haves are Multivitamins because the food today is so low in vitamins and minerals. It’s not harvested that way it was compared to 30 – 40 years ago. If you’re work out you utilize a lot of your vitamins and minerals and it’s the same with antioxidants. If you’re not getting a lot of food in you should supplement with an anti-oxidant. In metropolitan cities when you exercise you gonna have a lot of free radical damage in your body. And thirdly I would say a protein supplement; a whey protein supplement because you are looking after yourself and leading a healthy lifestyle and a healthy metabolism. You do need to eat 5 to 6 times a day sometimes you have to drink it to replace a meal.

Is there anything spe- go through it really. cific that you would like to say to our Hyderabadi One last question before audience ? we part. Motivation plays an important Specific to the role that is something Hyderabadi audience, you strongly agree and (the) main thing is advocate. How can a that the people find person get/ stay motian excuse that its so vated to work out? damn hot there that they can’t workout. I was there and it was hot for a little while and I used to train in 110 F and 115 F and all you gotta do is hydrate yourself. Since its hot you take in your minerals and take in your salts provided you don’t have a heart condition. Drink more fluid; I’ve found the coconut water out there was perfect since you don’t have to drink as much as you would with water. You won’t feel bloated all the time because you couldn’t get enough down because you were sweating so much. Coconut water has enzymes in there; it’s got five times more potassium than Bananas. It’s fantastic for hydration so don’t get controlled by that environment;
role model. And the “W” is for Weakness which could be “I love Mc’donalds or cake”. So if you keep visiting that flowchart and reiterating it you’re more likely to stick to it.
I want to thank you again Kris for giving this great interview I hope it inspires our readers to stay motivated and use your valuable advice and transform their lives and their bodies as well.
Well there are various forms of staying motivated. Before you begin or go to work out watch a motivational video, Read motivational quotes. Have this on your phone, your computer what- Yes, thank you. It was ever it maybe. What I an honor to do so. always say is make a flow chart where you have letters abbreviated. Where “F” stands for your fixed goal, goals like losing 10 pounds or wearing a new jeans. The “L” stands for Limitless goals – which could be “I want to have more confidence”, “I’m gonna approach that woman” or “I wanna have more energy” That Opportunity would be If I feel better about myself I would be able to go to the job Interviewed by I always wanted. I’d be a better inspiring Yamani Bin Zubair

HATE IS A STRONG WORD! by Prashanth Ghoshal
Hate is such a strong word. But people use it with spectacular frequency – “I hate cabbage!” “I hate exercising!” “I hate when my Mom re-arranges my stuff!” The reason why people use the word ‘hate’ so much is because they use the word ‘love’ more than it should be. In fact, from what I felt, the word ‘like’ would have been extinct if not for Facebook.
you got going there in your throat. Howling (misunderstood for crying) is a like a doggy cell phone or radio. It is a medium of long range communication for them. Wolves do it too! They do it to warn their pack about some stranger, to call their pack for hunting or if they get separated by their pack or owners. They express this separation anxiety through howling.
So when people often say “I hate dogs!” what do they actually mean? You have to be in their shoes to answer that question. So why do they hate dogs? They bark, they bite, they chase your automobile at night, they litter in your residential areas and they … they … they are just worst creatures on earth!! That’s it.
Contrary to popular belief, it is beneficial for a locality to keep stray dogs. They work as scavengers (better than most municipality ‘people’ actually) and eat up organic garbage, which can cause serious health issues if they get rotten. They also keep the rat population under control. If you remove strays from such areas and not clean the place efficiently, rat population increases. Minus the dogs, rats’ most natural predators are snakes. What do you preferstray snakes? Or stray dogs?
In India, they hate dogs because they howl, and if a dog howls a person nearby dies. Wow dog that is some real superpower

Since the beginning of the time, dogs have been our companions for security from wild animals. Dogs are used to being around human beings since the beginning of time. They love company of humans, often more than their own kind. They provide you with safety and eliminate a lot of diseases with their scavenging. If a dog bites you, which is a fairly rare occurrence, keep in mind that it is protecting something/itself. Maybe you ignorantly did something invoking an involuntary response fine-tuned by evolution. Maybe you did more than enough sound with the sole of your shoes, or maybe he just didn’t like your stupid face (that is a legitimate reason. You know you do it all the time).

Regardless, there are a few precautions you can take if you feel you are approaching or going through an aggressive unknown dog’s territory. *kutto se darta, haha!* Do not look the dog in the eye. If you do, you are basically challenging them to a fight. If the dog is lying/resting, don’t walk with loud shoes or do not try to jump over him. Remember how grumpy you are when your mom wakes you up in the morning? If you know there is a pregnant or mother dog nearby. Do not go past that area. Dog mommies are overprotective. Like all mothers should be and are. Don’t be stupid and throw stones at dogs. Just remember that a dog’s head is aligned straight to your crotch and buttocks. Like you are very protective about your underwear, a dog is protective of its tail. So don’t pull or touch it. Do not drive past dogs with speed or they will chase you. Remember the guy that cut you off and you used the full extent of your vocabulary in the most imaginative way possible? Same difference.
HyderabadiBAATAN | August 2013

You might be asking “Why should I take so much pain? I’d rather use a stick instead.”. A dog being aggressive is a defence mechanism; they do it out of fear. They don’t trust you; they recognise your body language. The easiest way to befriend a dog is to feed him. You don’t have to pamper him if you don’t want to. Just drop a few bread crumbs near your house and let the dog see that you dropped them. Repeat this process for a few days. Voila! The dog will trust you and will never harm you. “Why should I feed dogs? I hate it when you feed them and they litter all over the place. If you want them, keep them in your house.” Well. • It is illegal to threaten, abuse or harass dog feeders/care takers under Section 506 Indian penal court act. The court has termed feeding of animals as social service and any person
48

obstructing this shall be prosecuted and the police shall be deemed to protect such social activists. • Under Section 428/429 Indian penal court act it is illegal to harm, hurt, poison, hit, harass or kill any animal. • It is illegal to relocate dogs from their original territory under AWBI dog rules 2001. (Aur unloga kuch nai karre toh humla pakka atte) So take it up with your elected officials. They’ll look into it. After they steal crores of rupees. And litigate against colleagues they hate, who also do the exact same thing. After they contrive years to change archaic laws. After they struggle their way to pass judgement on rapists and murderers. All of this done by less than half of your MP’s work for 100 odd days a year.Good luck with that.

“But I really, really want to hate dogs for the main cause of Rabies they are!” One word. Vaccination. Get your society dogs vaccinated against stray dogs. It is free and takes only one or two phone calls to local N.G.O. or Municipal Corporation. Rabies is caused by saliva of ‘infected dogs’. It is not possible to tell infected dogs from normal ones (except for those who are severely infected). Also the main cause of rabies spreading within dogs is because of dogs fighting. When an infected dog bites another dog, the other dog becomes infected with rabies too. Why do fights happen? There are mainly two reasons: • When a dog relocated from one location to another. In other territory the dog becomes hostile and other dog of that territory attack. This results in a fight which leads to bites and thus spreading of rabies. So, never encourage relocation of dogs. It is worse than killing a dog. • The fight during mating season. You know the drill. I’ve seen men pathetically try and fight for the hot chick. Same difference. There are two ways to prevent them: (a) either make sure the dogs in your neighbourhood are vaccinated, which is unlikely to ensure, (b) Or, sterilize as well as vaccinate your colony dogs. So if I’ve convinced you on any level whatsoever and you’d like to help, there are several adoption facilities around the city for dogs (and cats, fish, reptiles, horses and other animals, we love them all). These animals range from being purebreds to mixed breeds, from being puppies to older adults, from being small to being very large. Take a ride to your local animal shelter and see if any of the available pets appeal to you. Alternatively, seek out the perfect pet online. See the below links to do a quick, targeted search for a cat or dog.

Kehte hain mulk ke sikke ki kheemat, wataniyon ki mohabbat se badti hai, Chahe wo maghribi mumalik ho ya khaleeji mumalik, Unke watani apne watan se mohabbat karte hain. Mere sikke ki kheemat aaj itni nakhist kaise?

Osmania Hyderabadi Shortbread
-Yamani Bin Zubair
Slurp….Ah Irani Chai! Slurp….Ah Irani chai! Wait something’s missing?. What I am missing is the feeling of washing down a crispy, zesty biscuit with Irani Chai! I’m missing the guilty pleasure that comes along with biscuits. No I’m not craving Britannia’s Marie Biscuits. Instead, I’m thinking about the delicious, crispy, little salty, little sweet, melt-in-your mouth ‘zaiqa’ of Osmania Biscuits. Osmania Biscuits are homemade from the heart of Hyderabad and filled with salty sweet love. Hyderabad is famous for a lot of things but the Osmania Biscuit has carved a niche for itself. The fact of the matter is that if you are new to Hyderabad and you are looking around to experience the true feeling of the city, don’t throng to the “Ladies Night” at Liquids and mingle with the party insects over there. Instead just dip an Osmania Biscuit into the world famous Irani Chai and sense a taste that makes Hyderabadi’s all over the world nostalgic. I still remember, as a kid, I’d hold my grandfather’s hand and walk faster than I could to the nearest bakery. Once I was there I’d fill my lungs with the smell of freshly baked goodies. I’d literally drool over the showcase of biscuits, Pull my grandfater’s hand and point out every single one of the goodies there. He’d say “Ek kilo Osmania pack karo, Bacche ku ek khane ku diyo”. I’d savour that one biscuit as I walked back home.

A marriage made in Hyderabad (better than Heaven) - Osmania Biscuits & Irani Chai. Every single time they meet, taste buds tantalize, eyes pry and mouths water. Yes, it is a tea time favourite and is sold off the shelf in almost every Irani hotel in Hyderabad. Too many around the city tea time is incomplete without Osmania Biscuits. They are eaten with so often and in such large volumes, this snack could have actually made it to the main course. Osmania lovers around Hyderabad throng to Nampally to buy Osmania from “Subhan Bakery” – a haven for biscuit lovers. Subhan bakers apparently sell over a tonne Osmania Biscuits every day and cater to different parts of the state.

We’ve heard of jewellery acquiring royal patronage, but biscuits? Yes indeed, Just like every other hyderabadi delicacy, Osmania Biscuit has a princely legacy. Legend has it that back in the day there was a popular hotel located at Abids called Viacji Hotel. They were also famous for their biscuits; so famous that the seventh Nizam of Hyderabad, Mis Osman Ali Khan absolutely loved them. It is said that a car from Nazari Bagh used to fetch it for him on a daily basis. Delighted with the royal patronage the hotel decided to name the biscuit “Osmania”. It’s been ages since the Nizamian era ended but “Osmania” was here to stay. The hotel supposedly altered the taste of the biscuit by making it less satly and slightly sugary to suit Nizam’s taste buds. An Osmania Biscuit is the buttress of all conversations. Shaadi ki baat karna hai ? Osmania laao ! Ladki dekhne jaare ? Osmania Khaao ! Ladki Dekhne aare ? Osmania Khilao! Badday hai kisiki ? Osmania lana mat bhoolo ! Most Hyderabadi affairs are plastered with Osmania Biscuits and Irani chai. Despite other delicacies making their way into the market Osmania holds its own. Whatever the weather be, in Hyderabad tea time is Osmania time. So go to your nearest Irani café and show some love to the traditional soft tea biscuits that blow away every hyderabadis’ mind in a single bite.

KHAGEENA: EGGS Hyderabadi Style -Yamani Bin Zubair
Mornings are lazy. Monsoon is still lingering around the corner and breakfast needs to just melt into your mouth, without effort. People in Hyderabad or who’ve just moved in – I’m a food fanatic, I have more Biryani in my blood stream than RBC’s. Of late, people in Hyderabad have moved to the quintessential working man’s breakfast and authentic Hyderabadi cuisine has become outdated. There are people providing ‘specialty’ Andhra cuisine in centralized AC hotels, catering to the taste buds of everyone. We don’t even know if the cook can speak Telugu, but he’s well capable of churning out perfectly round dosas. In all fairness, I love Andhra cuisine. But this is not about that; this is about authentic Hyderabadi cuisine. Biryani seems to be the only dish people are familiar with, so who’s got time for Khichdi Khatta or Khageena Roti? Where is the love? Anyways, where was I when I started this article, yes Hyderabadi breakfast. Well typically eggs can be put on anything and it’ll be called breakfast. That means you can just put eggs on top of sautéed onions, tomatoes, chilies and viola you’ll have what hyderabadis’ call Khageena. Traditionally a breakfast dish that’s served with oil glazed, fluffy rotis. This dish is basically an egg variant in the breakfast family cooked along with onions, tomatoes and chilies. Khaaaa what now? The name takes some time to get along but the dish just clicks with you. 76

My Teachers by Ameen Ahmed
In this wonderful country of ours, Teachers’ Day is observed on 5th September every year to pay honor to Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan and as a tribute to the extraordinary educators of our country. Students often go to the houses of their teachers, offer them garlands and flower bouquets and in return seek their blessings. It strengthens the relationship between students and teachers in educational institutions. Raised a Muslim in a convent school, I’d say I’ve had a relatively unique experience and perspective on the matter. Christians normally communicate in English all the time and with most teachers being Christian, I’d like to think I’ve picked up English fairly well. I’d like to think I am a well-mannered human being, which is all thanks to my teachers. We start going to school at an early age and spend most of our time in school. Our teachers prepare us for the world, prepare us to be strong and uphold moral values. Teachers are our intellectual parents and school was my second home. I was always a naughty child, teasing my teachers, mimicking them and what not. Being a child of the 90’s, my teachers used to thrash me, which were essential to teach me manners. Now a days teachers can’t even touch a child, rendering the newer generation a bit pampered. Parents and teachers know how to deal with the child but parents of this day and age are against teachers who beat their children. No teacher wants their students to stray down a wrong path which is why our teachers beat or scold us; for our own good. It is very important to respect our teachers and value them.
If acquiring knowledge is so important then, what would be the status of teacher in Islam? Here are few quotes that shed some light on the standing of a teacher in our religion. Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) said “I am sent as a teacher.” Hazrat Ali R.A said “One who taught me a single word, made me his slave.” I would love to share a small memory about my tuition teacher. I am so thankful to my tuition teacher for taking care of me all the time. My teacher used to be my neighbor .If I did any mischievous or wrong, my teacher used to catch hold of me and would correct my actions. To quote her “kahan the aaj ROADO’N pe tirgi tirgi phirrain the ujaad potton ke saat “ “KOT KOLA padta ab ye answer yaad nai hua toh “ She was like my mother. On teachers’ day, I used to sing songs for my teacher- both at school and tuition too. I and my tuition teacher used to have panipuri , share sheerkhuma biryani , iftaari . We had good rapport between us; we shared moments great moments; moments to be cherished. I’d like to thank my teachers a lot for taking care of me all the time and teaching me, both morally and academically. May Allah swt bless them with health and prosperity.
BAIGAN KE EXCUSES -Kareem lalani
Hyderabadis are most efficient at making excuses and truly convincing people that they speak nothing but the honest to god truth. Such efficiency requires natural talent rigorous training. And like any of the arts, prodigies start young. We asked a few teachers close to Hyderabadi Baatan for some of the most common excuses they’ve heard. They say it makes them proud that a new generation is carrying on a time honored tradition (I’m not making this part up).
“Aaj fir late?”
-”Auto wala ni aya madam” (when he goes to school on a cycle) -”Cycle puncture hogai thi madam” (when he goes to school in an auto) -”Barish ari thi madam” (despite owning a raincoat) -”Kalse time pe ata” (kal is a beautifully complex, variable quantum time constant invented in this wonderful motherland)
“Show me your homework ” -”Book bhulgaya madam” (whilst hiding it under the desk till the danger subsides) -”Didn’t do madam” (answers the lazy student who can’t even care to come up with a good excuse. Goddamn it Ramesh. I expect better) -”Home hi nai gaye madam toh homework kesa krna” (no way someone said that, she’s probably messing with me now)
“Kal Absent Kyon The? ”
-”Fever” (The most common excuse of all the students) -”Phupere chacha ki shadi thi “ (when the dude is still a bachelor) -”My Phupere chacha Passed Away“ (same guy who “got married“) -”Meri rasam thi “(says the genius who can’t even grow a half decent moustache)
“Call your parents ” “Out of town” (when they are not) -”Both are sick” (because why hesitate to healthy parents into patients and tempt the gods of fate) -“I don’t have balance to call them “(surely they’re screwing with me now; I’ll just stop)
