Kevin Fiege enters the stage and addresses the mob of crazy fans. He then calls out Joss Whedon. The director charms his audience before presenting the title teaser for Age of Ultron. The fans lose their sanity again. This did not happen in Comic Con Express in Hyderabad on September the 21st and 22nd. The big movie studios presenting their comic book movies and/or any movies seeing as how they view comic con as just another marketing gig (see the expendables movies panels) were absent. Movie stars, pseudo celebrities/marginal celebrities were absent (okay, maybe one guy who hosted a panel showed up. What did you think this magazine is? Proper journalism?). What we did have were independent comic book artists peddling their magnificent wares and passionate fanboys (and a surprising a number of fangirls-shocking) wearing their pride on their sleeves (literally). Hall 2 at the Hitex may have seemed sporadic, but don’t let that fool you; more than a respectable number of people showed up. Of course they did. There was no entrance fee. And India loves free. A very significant percentage of the attendees were under 30 though. Not that they’d care if you had pointed it out to them. Unless you had fake claws or some overdrawn DIY costume, they couldn’t care less about you. The costumes, apologies, cosplay, were easily the greatest attraction. So much so that there was a contest, a winner and obligatory prize. Which really didn’t matter. Nor should it. It didn’t to them. The costumes were extraordinarily well made given their DIY nature. Comic book characters, anime characters, movie and TV show characters. Anything pop-culture was fair game (although I’ll admit characters from Nolan’s batman trilogy had a significant attendance, rather annoyingly). Particularly impressive were a certain Disney character and an eponymous dictator.

Fandom isn’t quite fandom until you display it with bravado and swagger. Merchandise stores set up at the con were fulfilling that need. Price was not of consequence for most. I’d like to think it was a mixture of passion and the independent nature of the stalls fuelling the loosening of the purses (unlike a couple of corporate food stalls which erk this indie hipster writer). But what mattered is that the people were great. The event was fun and everybody participating had a fun time. The joy of meeting like-minded people and sharing your passions with them freely is a universal feeling. It is almost a basic human need. Attending a sporting event, a movie is no different than going to comic con.so don’t whale on the nerd attending in an overblown costume. Let me take that back. You can’t do that. There’s almost no purpose to it. Don’t you keep up with the times? Nerd is king now. -Azam Rizwan & Anish Subramanian

T A R A M AT I

BARADARI -Anish Subramanian

Hyderabad houses many monuments and heritage buildings of various dynasties. It is home to many marvelous architectural wonders of the great Quli Qutub Shah era. Most of these monuments are associated with fables depicting monuments in a way to convey the stories of their time. One such monument is Taramati Baradari.

HyderabadiBAATAN | October 2013

25

Taramati Bharadari is a place constructed by the seventh Sultan of Quli Qutub Shah dynasty as an ode to his favorite courtesan Taramati. It was an inn where travelers could rest and recover after a day’s journey. Taramati Baradari was constructed over the bank of river Musi; now this region comes under the city limits of Hyderabad. Located near Gandipet, Taramati is surrounded by nature and city on either side. Stretching over seven acres, Taramati is a part of IbrahimBagh, a Persian style garden built during the reign of Ibrahim Quli Qutub Shah, the second Sultan of Golconda.

Various fables are associated with Taramati, one of the more famous ones being the romantic stories linking the then-Sultan with a courtesan named Taramati. One such story goes that during the reign of Abdullah Qutb Shah, he used to hear Taramati’s voice as she sung for travelers at the serai, while he sat two kilometers away at Golconda fort. Her melodious voice was carried by the breeze, reaching the prince’s ear at the fort. Which somehow permeated through the Hyderabadi gene pool and we now have roadside romeos,to everybody’s disdain.

Maula Ali is probably one of the oldest inhabited places in the city. Iron Age burial sites belonging to the megalithic age have been excavated in Maula Ali. Under the reign of Nizam, the then Department of Archeology carried out an excavation in 1935 to find archaic burial sites at Maula Ali. Back in the day, Maula Ali was also known for the “Hyderabad race course which is now situated at Malakpet. Maula Ali was also famous for the open prison that was opened in 1954.

Another fable tells of two ravishing dancing sisters, Taramati and Premamati, who danced on ropes tied between their pavilion and the balcony of the king and patron, Abdulla Qutub Shah. The story, no doubt, passed down by the men folk.

HyderabadiBAATAN | October 2013

33

About half a mile north of the fort lays his grave amid a cluster of carved royal tombs a.k.a the seven Qutb Shahi Tombs. Here lie buried the Qutub Shahi kings and queens in what once their rose gardens. As a tribute to Taramati and Premamati, they both were buried in the royal cemetery of the Qutub Shahi kings.

Taramati Baradari pavilion has 12 doorways and was constructed to allow cross ventilation and is one of the most indigenous techniques to have been used at that time. The open pavilion includes other facilities like an air-cooled theatre with capacity of 500 people, open-air auditorium with capacity of 1600 people and a banquet hall with a capacity of 250. The building itself has been renovated and turned into a fully functioning resort/heritage hotel, run by the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Department, with A/C suites, fully air conditioned theatre and banquet hall, a souvenir shop, health club and a swimming pool.

Cover Story

-Hyder Abadi Kooooooooooo chuk chuk chuk chuk...Rail gaadi Rail gaadi chuk chuk chuk chuk.... wait that’s not what a metro sounds like!

Kya bole Metro? Abba Metro? HAU! Hyderabad is finally getting its own metro, in essence completing its ascension into the league of most preferred cities of India. A fully automated rapid transit system is currently under construction. Its implementation is based on what happens to be world’s largest Public-Private Partnership Project (PPP) in the Metro Sector. Metro Rail, spearheaded by Larsen and Toubro (Turbo soche nai aap??maloom mereku..) has sparked the beginning of an era of seamless commuting in cities like Delhi, Bangalore and Kolkata.

HyderabadiBAATAN | October 2013

39

The first phase of the metro was approved by the central government back in 2008. The official estimated cost of the project stands at 141.32 billion (US$2.2 billion). L&T emerged as the highest bidder and the project was taken up for a whopping 14.58 billion (US$220 million). Its length is 71 km after final revisions. The construction of the entire 71.16 km has been split up into 6 stages. The first stage is scheduled to be completed by June 2014. The “Bhoomi Pooja” was performed on 26 April 2012 L&T has not looked back despite challenges, L&T has completed 50% of the construction on line 3 of pillars have been in full swing. The rolling stock tender of the project or the “Train stock” was allotted by L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad Ltd to Hyundai Rotem. Hyundai is expected to deliver 57 trains consisting of 171 cars in phases 9 months prior to the commencement of each stage. The ticketing is based on automatic fare collection system developed by Samsung data systems. The ticket fares will be as low as Rs.9 for distances between 0 -2 km to Rs.18 for distances above 18 km.

Unfortunately, it seems urban development can only come at the expense of environmental degradation. Hyderabad is known as the green city. We are moving into a new phase of automated trains running through the city whose development comes at a cost of trees being cut, long traffic jams, air and sound pollution and a possible threat to the heritage sites. Heritage conservationists have their doubts. Fresh protests have risen against the construction of metro. In cities like Delhi, Bangalore and Kolkata, metro tracks were laid underground to avoid any facade to the heritage sites. The same is being demanded by heritage conservationists in Hyderabad since the stretches from Rasoolpura junction to Maozamjahi market and the vicinity of the Charminar are under the metro scanner.

Amidst the debate of how Metro will affect the city, 361 pillars have been laid and development has been strong for L&T’s Metro project. The metro is expected to be operational by March 2015 as Ugadi gift to Hyderabad and is sought out and one of the top 100 strategic global infrastructure projects. Toh Metro aaye tak light leo aur seven seater pakdo !

A Bus Ride in Hyderabad Ticket...Ticket...Ticket...Ticket...Ticket...Ticket...Ticket...Ticket...

50

HyderabadiBAATAN | October 2013

Well live in a metropolitan city, always crowded, always hectic, with traffic more often than not moving at a snail’s pace. As such, public transportation is a great option for getting around in the city. Unless you are filthy rich. Then you simple have some poor sap

chauffer you around. The Metro rail is also going to be launched soon, but over the years, it has been the wonderful orange –white (erstwhile green-white) R.T.C buses getting people to their destinations almost on time.

HyderabadiBAATAN | October 2013

51

Unlike most cities in India, the backbone of the public transportation in Hyderabad is the bus system, not the train/tram service. The A.P.S.R.T.C is certified by the Guinness World Records for being the largest bus operator in the world. Fitting, considering you need so many buses for the world’s second largest population. (Although not as bad as the trains of Japan) there is pushing and pulling with buckets of people fighting over petty issues. The bus is very punctual, always arriving five minutes later than on the schedule, crowded, and almost always not having an empty seat, unless you belong to the fairer sex. Ladies, you’re welcome. As for the males, there are two kinds of people-the foot boarding population, who are too cool for standing inside, along with the others, who are too tired to give a care about looking cool.

52

HyderabadiBAATAN | October 2013

HyderabadiBAATAN | October 2013

53

54

HyderabadiBAATAN | October 2013

Enter the conductor, his/her holy Highness, Lord of the bus. Thou shall (a) listen to every word said (b) bow one’s head and not speak out of turn (c) bring exact trinkets if thy seeks safe passage. “Chillar Ledaa!?” in his/her majesty’s tongue means you’ve done something wrong. Respond swiftly and without hesitation, else it’s off the bus. That doesn’t go just for the males. Because India. We might be lazy, obnoxious and inconsiderate, but we sure as hell aren’t sexist.

HyderabadiBAATAN | October 2013

55

56

HyderabadiBAATAN | October 2013

Yet I am drawn towards these slow, inconvenient means of transport. Nostalgia, I figure, is playing a major role. Travelling with friends on a regular basis, mimicking the conductor, foot boarding (not recommended; kids, don’t try this), listening to songs whilst seeing out of the

window and pretending to be in a movie. Only to be dragged back to reality by some guy asking you where the buses is headed. Nai jaata Kachiguda ku, you tourist. Because only a tourist doesn’t know where the hell Kachiguda is. Ha. Noob. -Anish Subramanian HyderabadiBAATAN | October 2013

Fashion:

Fall/Winter Survival kit Somewhere along the way – probably when Hyderabad was waking up to acquire a fashion sense off the runway for this fall/winter 2013 – we saw the style/mood for this fall/winter and the must haves for Hyderabadi’s winter. Hyderabad is not big on winter, unlike colder its counterparts Delhi & Bangalore. We’re huge when it comes to rain, not so big about the cold though, I swear I see men sporting loafers in knee deep water. Really! Loafers in monsoon? Are you kidding me? This season we’ve got biker jackets and bold plaid prints. Let’s get a grip on the seasons must haves and try not to wear loafers in the winter, shall we?

58

HyderabadiBAATAN | October 2013

TurtleNeck No! It’s not called a “polo neck”. Get your facts right. Sweaters are big but consider a turtle neck, since they are big this season and walk the line between casual and classy. This season, go for darker shades with thinner fabrics. You can team it up with a jacket or a coat to add class to regular attire.

HyderabadiBAATAN | October 2013

59

Double-Breasted Jackets Think yesteryear suits with well cut, slim fits. This season traditional brands drew inspiration from retro and vintage eras and added double breasted jackets to their superbly dapper collections.

60

HyderabadiBAATAN | October 2013

Bold Plaids Plaids have been a print that has been painted on everything from pants to bags. Now its back but with a lil’ tweak. It’s bold! From suits to coats and jackets - plaids just got bold and are bigger than life.

HyderabadiBAATAN | October 2013

61

Camel

The colour of the season – camel. From coats, jackets, tailored pants to suits, camel is a must have. Try to break free from the grays and blacks this season and sport the color sought out by who’s who at the fashion runways.

62

HyderabadiBAATAN | October 2013

Sturdy Boots Boots are huge when it comes to winter. As the season gets cold and the air gets chillier it makes a solid pair of boots imperative. It’s worth considering investing in a pair of boots in Tan or black leather versions which are most versatile. They go well with casual denims and chinos and they also look great with a pair of tailored suit. HyderabadiBAATAN | October 2013

63

Biker Jackets Biker jackets rose to prominence as a symbol of rebellious subculture post the Second World War. It was huge in India when Bollywood movies went on to epitomize the tough-guy image. This season, biker jackets are showcased in browns, blacks. Don’t stray away from classic styles with asymmetric zippers.

64

HyderabadiBAATAN | October 2013

Chunky Knits Yash Chopra always liked the heroes of his movies being shot amidst snowy backgrounds in chunky knits, This fashion sense has made its way to the runways and was displayed by the likes of emporio Armani, Salvatore Ferragamo & Gucci.

Shikampur

-Yamani Bin Zubair

These days, I’m living and breathing “meat”. I’ve always been a huge fan of protein which keeps my doting mom on her toes since I crave meat all the time. This almost obsessive behaviour comes from the fact that being a Hyderabadi I’m armed with a “nawabi” palate. Hyderabadi cuisine has so much to offer that I begin to muster the recipes I love. Since the advent of Hyderabadi Baatan, I’ve always wanted to bring Hyderbadi cuisine out in the open (even few khaandaani recipies). One such name that literally brings water to my mouth is Shikampoor. No, it is not a place after Shamshabad! It is a boneless/minced meat patty with an yogurt+onion+herb filling fried to perfection. They can be eaten as a side dish with regular food or along with hot chapattis.

HyderabadiBAATAN | October 2013

73

Recipe

Ingredients • • • • • • • • • • • • • 74

Boneless/Minced Lamb meat - 750 gms Onions – 2 large, roughly chopped Chana Dal – 1 cup (pre-soaked for about an hour and drained) Garam masala powder- 1 tsp Turmeric – 1/4 tsp Cinnamon sticks/Dalchini – one 8 cm long stick Cumin seeds – 1/2 tsp Red Chilli /Lal mirch powder – 3 1/2 tsp Salt – 3 tsp Ginger Garlic paste – 2 tbsp Green chillies – around 10-12, roughly chopped Lemon juice – 4 tbsp Cilantro – 1 cup, roughly chopped

HyderabadiBAATAN | October 2013

Directions To prepare the dough: Pour half a cup of water in a pressure cooker at medium high heat and add lamb, pre-soaked dal, chopped onions, turmeric powder, red chilli powder, salt, cumin seeds, and ginger garlic paste and cinnamon stick. Mix well! Close the lid and let it pressure cook until the meat is tender. Later, open the lid and let it cook until all the liquid has evaporated and it’s a dry mixture. Make sure there’s no water left in the mixture. This is important or else while making the patties you’ll see they’re cracking while you shallow fry them. Let this mixture cool down. Once cool, remove the cinnamon stick. Add the mixture to a food blender. Now add the garam masala powder, lemon juice , cilantro, chillies and blend them without adding any water until its consistency is smooth and pasty. Viola! The Shikampoor dough is ready. Rice as a side dish. To prepare Shikampoor: 1. Finely chop 1 medium onion, 1 tbsp fresh cilantro, 1 tbsp fresh mint leaves, and 4 small green chillies. Add 2 tbsp hung thick yogurt and salt to taste. Mix well. This is the yogurt delight – a filling for the shikampoor. (Prepare more of this if you are planning to make many Shikampoor for a large crowd) 2. Take a small amount of oil in a cup. Take a golf ball size of the above prepared meat mixture in your hands. Make a well in the centre and add about a tablespoon of the yogurt delight prepared in the above step. Working gently with your hands bring the edges together and cover the filling properly to shape into a flattened patty(as shown in the picture above). 3. In a small frying pan at medium high heat, pour little oil and shallow fry theShikampoor until crisp dark brown on each side. Shallow fry them in batches. Serve warm with chapattis or with rice as a side dish.
