Rainbow Film Festival_Double Page Editorial 30/07/2015 18:41 Page 1

Shropshire’s Rainbow Film Festival celebrates ten years this October, with another packed weekend of fabulous feature films, documentaries, Q&A’s, discussions and short film screenings. The Festival will be opened by the Mayor of Shrewsbury, Cllr. Miles Kenny.

There are a number of filmmakers and directors attending, one of whom Matt Carter, will be talking about his film, ‘Jayson Bend: Queen and Country’, in a Q&A after the screening.

Jayson Bend is an LGBT James Bond styled Action/ Comedy/Satire feature film. Royal Intelligence Ministry agent, Jayson Bend teams up with his Swiss counterpart to try and stop the launch of a satellite that will turn the owner of the largest global hair salon chain into one of the most powerful men in the world! ‘We screened it to a small audience in Ludlow last year. They laughed all the way through, so we decided to screen it at the main Festival this year,’ said Will Allaway. Once again, the Festival has teamed up with SpringOut, who have chosen the films with a lesbian focus. ‘Mom’s

Apple Pie: the Heart of the Lesbian Mother’s Custody Movement’, reminds us of the struggles lesbian mothers faced in the 1970’s. This is coupled with ‘Raising Hell’, interviews with the children of lesbian and gay parents talking about their lives.

Taking festival goers back even further, ‘Victim’, a film made in 1961 (Dirk Bogarde/Sylvia Syms), is a gay classic film noir. It tells the story of a high flying barrister who is cut down when he confronts the blackmail suffered by gay men in 1960’s Britain. This will be accompanied by a Q&A about the film with Peter Scott-Presland, the author of ‘Amiable Warriors’: a history of the pioneers who struggled for gay rights in the 50’s and 60’s. Two Short Film screenings, on Saturday and Sunday mornings, will showcase films from around the world. Once again, the audience will choose the best films for an Audience Award. There will be a chance to meet the directors at a Directors' Breakfast, on the Saturday at 8.00am.

Shropshire Rainbow Film Festival: 16th – 18th October, at The Old Market Hall Cinema and The Hive, Shrewsbury. Visit: www.rainbowfilmfestival.org.uk or Email: info@rainbowfilmfestival.org.uk

Casa Naranjo Review_Double Page Editorial 15/08/2015 19:08 Page 1

Casa Naranjo is an authentic Tapas bar in the heart of historic Shrewsbury, which opened its doors for the first time in September 2010. This little restaurant is a place full of atmosphere, taste, friends and authenticity. Now, after 4 year on, Marta and Ramón have taken over the reins and started a whole new chapter at Casa Naranjo!

THE HYPE REVIEW

Casa Naranjo

“An Authentic Spanish Tapas Experience”

Serving beautiful, homemade, authentic Spanish Tapas with carefully sourced ingredients and complemented with Spanish Beers, Ciders and Wines, perfect for a romantic dinner for two or a large party! Everyone is welcomed with the same warm, friendly smiles, inviting atmosphere and delicious aromas at Casa Naranjo.

My husband Stephan and I visited on a Friday evening, we enjoyed a lovely stroll along the cobbled passageway, where the restaurant is situated and went in. Following the amazing smells emanating from the entrance we made our way up the stairs into the dining area. We were greeted by Marta and Ramón who really make you feel instantly at ease, and shown to our table. Marta took our drinks order, I went for a soft drink (driving again!) and Stef, being the wine lover of the two of us, ordered a glass of Jaun de Alzate (Red Wine) which was perfect for the occasion. We had a browse through the menus and really wanted to try some new dishes, so I asked if Marta would be able to put together a selection of her favourite dishes for us to try – like a Magical Mystery Tour of Spanish Tapas – and then the journey began!

Casa Naranjo Review_Double Page Editorial 15/08/2015 19:09 Page 2

Firstly, with some Aceitunas - Fresh and Juicy "Manzanilla" Olives, which are some of the best around, along with Pa amb Tomaquet - warm, crusty, Rustic Bread with a homemade Tomato and Garlic Dip - Simple yet brilliant! The next dish arrived, Boquerones en Vinagre - Marinated Spanish Anchovies with Garlic & Olive Oil, which were really tasty, especially with the kick of Garlic, we polished them off in no time but before they were all gone the next dish was ready to move on to. A selection of Ibéricos – – Iberian Cured Meats and Quesos – Spanish Cheeses along with fig bread which I loved, the cheese was so rich and full of flavour and the cured meats were the perfect match. Next up was one of Stef’s favourite dishes of the evening, Croquetas - Homemade croquettes, Crispy on the outside and

Creamy bechamel on the inside. They literally melt in your mouth and ooze with the most amazing flavours – delicioso! More dishes arrived for us to try - Solomillo de Cerdo al Queso Azul - Iberian Pork Sirloin with Creamy Blue Cheese Sauce, which I was blown away by. The pork was so succulent and juicy and the Blue Stilton Cheese sauce was simply delightful giving the dish a real punch. They were served with tiny fried potato which really rounded the dish off well –fantástico! The next two dishes

arrived together and looked fabulous, they were Alcachofas Rellenas Artichoke Hearts stuffed with Iberian Ham, topped with Piquillo Peppers and Poached Quail Eggs and Brochetas de Gambas y Vieiras Grilled Prawns and Scallops Skewers with a Garlic & Parsley Dressing. I absolutely adore seafood so the skewers were a real treat for me, they were cooked to perfection and the delicate flavours were accentuated by the dressing but the real surprise was the Artichoke Hearts – Guau! These were gloriously sweet and the quail eggs and peppers really made this my ‘dish of the night’ although that was not an easy choice to say the least! The dishes were beginning to fill the table as along came some Pimientos de Queso - Piquillo Peppers stuffed with Goat´s Cheese, Nuts and Capers – this being one of the dishes that ‘bursts’ with flavours. The peppers were sweet and the goat’s cheese had a richness that is hard to beat. The final dish of the evening was one that Ramón had recommended to us, Carrillera de Ibérico al Vino - Iberian Pork Cheek in Red Wine sauce served with sliced “panaderas” potatoes, this is why I like to ask for a selection that is chosen for me, as I may of missed out on this gem. The Pork cheek again was cooked beautifully and the red wine sauce had a lovely sweetness that had infused throughout the meat which made it taste amazing!

After a marathon of Tapas dishes, I was bursting. But I ALWAYS have room for a little dessert and I had been saving a special space for one that I was hoping was on the menu – Crema Catalana – Custard with a

caramelised topping, and I was in luck. Stef is a chocolate lover and instantly opted for the Brownie – A nutty Brownie covered in Chocolate Sauce and Vanilla Ice Cream. I was in Amor! The desserts were a spectacular finish to our wonderful ‘Mystery Tour’ of Spanish Tapas and to wash them down we finished off with a lovely coffee.

Casa Naranjo is based on two things warmth and dedication – together these culminate in bringing the taste of Spain to the heart of Shrewsbury and you will definitely want to keep going back to sample some of the numerous dishes on offer – There are even special offers available every lunchtime (MONDAY TO FRIDAY) and WEDNESDAY evening of 2 TAPAS x £6.50 and Sunday 3 TAPAS x £12! Opening Times: EVERY DAY (MON - SUN) Lunch 12pm - 2.30pm Dinner 5.30pm - Late

Travelling out to Norton-in-Hales near Market Drayton on a Thursday evening we were excited to be out of the hustle and bustle of Shrewsbury Town and surrounded by masses of peaceful countryside. In this picturesque village stands a real treasure known as The Hinds Head, a family run village pub & restaurant. Steven and his team gave us a warm welcome and we were seated in the restaurant to soak up the traditional features of this quaint village pub.

THE HYPE REVIEW

The Hinds Head “Glorious Setting &

Mouth-watering Food”

Although Thursday for most at The Hinds Head means Tapas me and my partner Simon chose to mix it up with tapas starter’s to share then moving onto our mains we ordered from the main evening menu. Simon and I chose three dishes of Tapas Starters to share, after much deliberation we decided on the Hoi Sin Duck, Spring Onions & Pancakes, Garlic & Herb Prawns on Bruschetta and finally the Battered Chicken Balls with Sweet & Sour Sauce. As we sat and took in our surroundings the restaurant began to fill with hungry diners most of who had travelled to take advantage of the excellent Tapas Menu!

Soon our starters arrived. Tucking into the Hoi Sin Duck we were blown away - WOW! The meat was cooked to perfection, the duck and the hoi sin sauce complimenting each other beautifully, wrapped into a pancake, I was impressed! Simon loves Prawns and as he sampled the juicy Garlic & Herb Prawns on Bruschetta he said they were deliciously sensational oozing with flavour. The Battered Chicken Balls were fab, freshly battered succulent chicken bites eaten with a homemade sweet & sour sauce

The Hinds Head_Double Page Editorial 14/08/2015 12:54 Page 2

that suited my palate perfectly. Both I and Simon were extremely impressed with our shared starter and eager for our mains.

Ordering our mains took a while to decide! There were a number of dishes that we would have liked to have sampled. After a lot of deliberation I decided that the 8 Hour Slow Braised Blade of Beef, in a red wine, Button Mushroom & Baby Onion Sauce, Horseradish & Chive Mash Potato with Honey Glazed Carrot was just the dish for me. Simon opted for the Ballotine of Chicken Breast Stuffed with Mozzarella Cheese & Chorizo, Wrapped in Parma Ham with Roasted Mediterranean Vegetables, Dauphinoise Potato with a Tomato & Basil Sauce.

Our Mains arrived swiftly and were presented well in large dinner dishes. Simon’s Ballotine of Chicken was succulent and moist. The Parma ham, mozzarella cheese & chorizo made a divine dish. The Mediterranean vegetables & Dauphinoise potato with tomato and basil sauce worked perfectly, every mouthful complimenting the next. Simon was overjoyed and devoured the lot! My blade of beef was literally mouth-watering the beef

fell apart on the plate. The chive and horseradish mash potato worked excellent with the red wine, button mushroom & baby onion sauce. I was stuffed and very happy with my choice of dish.

Simon & I were both full to the brim but the dessert menu could not be ignored! From Cheese Boards to Crème Brulee there was plenty to choose from. Our waiter suggested the Lemon & Raspberry Posset with Shortbread Biscuit and Damson & Sloe Gin Ice Cream. I chose the Warm Chocolate Brownie Served with Vanilla Ice Cream, with Simon putting his trust in the waiter and going with his recommendation of the Lemon Posset. Our desserts came presented delicately on slate plates the warm chocolate brownie supporting a large scoop of Vanilla Ice Cream resting on a drizzle of raspberry puree! As a chocolate lover I was in my element! The warm soft brownie mixing with the cold ice cream was the ideal ending to my dining experience at The Hind’s Head. Simons Lemon Posset arrived with lots of different elements to make the dish completely stunning, a smooth creamy lemon posset cupped with a raspberry on top served with a crunchy shortbread, alongside scooped sloe gin ice cream with the raspberry puree finishing off the presentation amazingly. Both desserts went down a treat and we were thoroughly thrilled with our meals. The Hinds Head have many promotional evenings throughout the week. Tuesday is Grill Night offering 2 Meals & a bottle of house wine for only £25.95! Thursday is Tapas Night. Sunday Lunch is served 12-3.30pm

Sundays with 4 roasts available. The Hinds Head offer an extensive Children’s Menu. A NEW Tasting Menu coming soon offers a 10 course tasting menu evening including wine pairings. Please ask staff for more details.

CHIQUITO “Discover Fresh Flavours!”

Tex-Mex magic right on your doorstep at Chiquito’s Shrewsbury – They have a menu full of taste-bud-tingling, fresh flavours from their signature chicken fajita, served with sizzling chopped onions, crisp mixed peppers all wrapped in a soft flour tortilla to fresh fully loaded Nachos! Whether you like to turn up the heat with red hot jalapenos or cool it down with home-made salsa and sour cream, no matter what your preference, there’s a flavour for everyone at Chiquito!

My husband Stephan and I went along to Chiquito Shrewsbury, after a very long week at Hype towers and we were looking forward to a Tex-Mex treat to get the weekend started. I instantly fell in love with the traditional Mexican theme throughout the restaurant, with lots of colourful decorations and Aztec prints, and even an array of sombreros to choose from. We were greeted by the lovely staff and shown to a booth, and given some menus to check out. Firstly though, cocktails were needed! Stef loves trying something new so was in his element here, and after some deliberation he opted for a Strawberry Margarita - Tequila and fresh lime juice blended with your choice of fruit purée and served on the rocks. I was driving but was thrilled to see a Mock-jito for me to enjoy – all the flavours of the Mojito, without actually having the spirit – and it was glorious! We had a chat with Mags, who had explained some of the options available on the Lunch Menu and Stef decided that he was going to try Cantina Mushrooms - Mushrooms in their signature tomato & hot Habanero sauce, topped with cheese and served

Chiquito Review_Double Page Editorial 02/08/2015 16:40 Page 2

with tortilla chips and I couldn’t resist the Nachos -Tortilla chips, stacked high and covered in Texan style cheese sauce, jalapeño peppers, melted cheese, sour cream and a helping of homemade salsa & guacamole. Mags had warned Stef that the Cantina Mushrooms were spicy, and she wasn’t wrong! He tucked in eagerly, having to pause to put out the fire in his mouth with a slurp of his Margarita but he soon polished them off and really enjoyed the tasty combination. My Nachos were amazing, a perfect start – the salsa and cheese were great and the peppers gave it the perfect kick, spicing it up nicely. We enjoyed the fun vibe and lively music, and had a bit of fun with the sombreros – Selfie Time!

In no time at all the main course arrived and it looked fab! Stef had chosen Chicken Enchilada - Spicy chicken and Texan style cheese sauce rolled into two flour tortillas, baked in the oven and topped with their signature tomato sauce and melted cheese and served with a fresh house salad. I had Tacos – Well come on, I had to try them! These tacos came with added crunch, topped with cheese, sour cream and pink onions and served with salad and homemade

salsa on the side. There are a few options for fillings but I fancied Chicken, Chorizo & Sweetcorn – Sounds perfect, right?

They were without doubt as good as they sounded, full of flavour and filled to the brim with chunks of chicken, chorizo and melted cheese – YUM! The dollop of sour cream evened out the spice nicely and the salsa gave the whole thing that final touch of flavour – brilliant. Stef said that his Enchilada was phenomenal, full of fresh flavours – Just what the doctor ordered after a long week! He thought that maybe another cocktail was in order to wash down the lovely food – This time he went for a Azul Margarita - A twisted blue Margarita combining Jose Cuervo Silver Tequila, Blue Curacao and fresh lime juice complemented with a fresh orange wedge, he really had that Friday feeling after this one!

We debated whether to have dessert – well for at least 5 seconds anyway. We decided to do a ‘sharing’ portion of Churros - Delicious soft dough, fried until crispy and golden, drenched with cinnamon sugar, served with fresh strawberries and a pot of chocolate sauce for dipping. I was really delighted with these as they combined some of my favourite things, cinnamon, strawberries, chocolate and sharing something lovely with my other half, some things are just better when you do them together! The Churros were light and crispy, melting in my mouth to give the hit of cinnamon sugar – WOW! Chiquito’s is a fantastic place to enjoy great food, a great atmosphere and

cocktails to die for. The restaurant is fresh and vibrant and the staff brilliant and very friendly. You will feel right at home here, whether you are having a romantic meal or a party with your amigos. They offer Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner menus, as well as Kids Menu and a Gluten Intolerance Menu So everyone is catered for. From the moment you walk through the door you can expect a warm welcome, lively atmosphere and a burst of fantastic flavours - take a look around and you’ll find a host of authentic features that capture the very essence of all things Tex Mex and put all of this together and you’ve got the vibrant and laid-back fiesta feeling that Chiquito is famous for. The menus are packed with Mexican and American dishes to suit all tastes – from wild to mild, and every flavour in between - So sit back relax and enjoy… Welcome to the Chiquito Experience!

Oswestry - A Beautiful Market Town EDITORIAL FEATURE

Oswestry – A beautiful market town located in the North of Shropshire close to the Welsh Border. It remains an important market and shopping centre serving North West Shropshire and Mid Wales, the narrow passageways linking streets such as English Walls, Welsh Walls, The Bailey and the Horsemarket. Oswestry retains the intimacy of a rural town serving the local community and is home to an array of specialist and independent shops.

With some delightful tearooms, cafes and restaurants dotted around you will be able to find the perfect ‘bite to eat’. You can enjoy a wander through the meandering streets and find fantastic shops that have everything imaginable on offer from hand-made craft shops to traditional style butchers. The Market Hall has a vast diversity of stalls with everything from pet care to balloons, which is great as it means you can get everything you need under one roof. There are markets held on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays as well as a Farmers Market held on the last Friday of every month.

The Heritage centre, based in Oswestry's first school which was founded in 1407, holds regular exhibitions of local arts and crafts as well as the Tourist Information Centre. Most of the town centre is a designated Conservation Area, holding a mixture of architectural styles, from old timber framed houses to Georgian architecture around St Oswald's Church where there are a number of imposing town houses.

Points of Interest

Iron Age Fort - There is an impressive Iron Age fort, just to the North of the town, which dates back 2500 years ago. Nowadays, only the Earthworks remain, but it is well worth a visit and is maintained by English Heritage. Offa's Dyke footpath - This long distance footpath, which goes from Prestatyn to Chepstow along the Welsh border, passes about 3 miles to the west of Oswestry. It is well maintained and can be picked up at many points in the area. The path follows an ancient earthwork which is thought to have been a defensive dyke built by the Saxon King Offa. Ludlow Food Festival Edit_Double Page Editorial 17/08/2015 14:10 Page 1

The summer holidays maybe over but there’s still plenty to look forward to in the coming months, take the Ludlow Food Festival for example, which runs from 11-13 September. 200 Amazing Food Producers With the festival’s picturesque setting of Ludlow and its castle, you’ll find lots to tempt the senses, not least your taste buds. With nearly 200 of the very best local food producers exhibiting, there will be smokeries to cheese makers, millers to breweries, rare breed farmers to cake creators; the list is totally mouth-watering. In fact its well worth downloading a copy of the festival programme from the website www.foodfestival.co.uk to ensure you don’t miss anyone.

Thirty-Three Free Talks And Demos Top restaurant chefs, national food journalists and cookbook authors are part of the exciting line-up on Ludlow’s two demonstration stages this year. The Wot’s Cooking and Graeme Kidd stages will be the focal point for culinary wizardry with no less than 33 free talks and demonstrations across the weekend.

Friday’s highlights on the Wot’s Cooking Stage include Principal Tutor of 'The Vegetarian Society Cookery School Alex Connell and Great British Bake Off star Howard Middleton with recipes from his new book ‘Delicious Gluten Free Baking’. This stage will also host the Young Chef of the Year Competition when the two finalists will battle it out to be crowned champion. Saturday includes a visit from another Great British Bake Off favourite, last year’s finalist Luis Troyano, before we venture into our wild larders with forager Liz Knight and

discover what made Bevan Fleming rescue an abandoned Olive Farm. On the Graeme Kidd Stage food writer Lesley Mackley will be launching the new ‘Made in Shropshire’ cookbook.Sunday’s selection includes the very welcome return of culinary legend Shaun Hill whose Merchant House helped put Ludlow on the food map. The Food Festival will be announcing more Top Chefs for its Friday line-up so keep checking the website for more details in the week before the festival. Get Involved No matter whether you’re 8, 80 or somewhere in between, there is plenty to see and do at the festival. Taste Workshops offer hour-long sessions including talk and tastings range from £4 to £15 depending on the session. You can find more details on the website, www.slowfoodludlow.org.uk.

The sausage, ale and bread trails are one of the most opular aspects of the Festival, but they sell out quickly so don’t hang around! There’s kids cookery sponsored by Lanyon Bowdler as well as workshops with Grow Cook Learn.

At the Ludlow Assembly Rooms you’ll find the Pink Lady® Food Photographer of the Year exhibition. There’s also pudding tasting, the window dressing competition, you can take a brewery tour, visit the market or just sit and relax while listening to music all weekend long.

With so much going on it’s hard to imagine just the one day visit will be enough, luckily you can buy a weekend ticket too. For more details and to buy tickets please visit the website www.foodfestival.co.uk

Duran Duran Tour_Double Page Editorial 29/07/2015 11:53 Page 1

Multi-platinum superstars Duran Duran will release their 14th studio album, Paper Gods on September 11th through Warner Bros. Records. Singer Simon Le Bon, keyboardist Nick Rhodes, bassist John Taylor, and drummer Roger Taylor recorded the album in London with producers Nile Rodgers, Mark Ronson, Josh Blair, and Mr Hudson. The record features special guests Janelle Monáe (on the first single “Pressure Off”), former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante, Canadian Juno-Award winning singer Kiesza, British singer/songwriter Mr Hudson, violinist Davidé Rossi and actress Lindsay Lohan. The album was mixed by Mark ‘Spike’ Stent. The songs on Paper Gods capture the duality and sense of conflict at the heart of Duran Duran’s music. “It really goes back to that strange early Duran mix: the hard-edged pop, coexisting with this dark, weird, experimental side,” John says. “That’s something that’s essential to all of us,” Nick adds. “It’s great to be able to lift people’s spirits — and your own — with a strong shot of pure pop, but the world we live in isn’t all just made of that stuff, so it seems natural to me that we have kept one foot in the darker, more Gothic side of life.” Early sessions for Paper Gods began in 2013, with Mark Ronson and engineer Josh Blair once again joining the band in their south London recording studio, as they had for 2011’s All You Need is Now, which was produced by Ronson. When Ronson was called away to begin working on his own album, Duran Duran and Blair hooked up with the Kanye West/Jay-Z collaborator Ben “Mr” Hudson, and the sessions caught fire. In the summer of 2014, Ronson returned once more to the project, adding long-time Duran collaborator, Nile Rodgers to the mix for two of the album’s standout tracks. The remaining songs were co-produced by Josh Blair and the band.

“We found a whole new level of inspiration on this album,” says Rhodes. “We’ve allowed ourselves the time to make music that we can be proud of,” adds Le Bon. “I judge what we release by my favourite albums — Horses, Harvest, Let It Bleed, Blue, Transformer, Aladdin Sane. Those are classic albums. The only rule is it’s got to be music you can live with for the rest of your life.”

CHIC co-founder Nile Rodgers and Mark Ronson co-wrote, and produced the tracks “Pressure Off” and “Only in Dreams”. Rodgers also features on the first single from what will be the band’s 14th studio release. The former harks back to the taut funk of Duran Duran’s 1986 album Notorious, which was also co-produced by Rodgers. “Notorious was a strong touchstone for the band,” says Roger Taylor. “All You Need is Now definitely reflected our earlier albums, but our starting point here was Notorious. We’re fortunate to be able to be inspired by our own back catalogue – not many bands can say that.”

DURAN In a collaboration overseen by China Chow, the band worked closely with Los Angeles-based artist Alex Israel, who created the album's cover art. It features a collage of images that reference the visual history of Duran Duran, each placed like a sticker on a reproduction of Israel's "Sky Backdrop" painting. The logo and graphic design is by Brian Roettinger.

Alongside news of the new album, Duran Duran have also announced that they will perform a series of dates on their UK arena tour that kicks off in late November. Formed in Birmingham in 1978, Duran Duran is one of the most culturally influential and commercially successful bands of all time, topping the charts around the world over the past three decades and selling more than 100 million records worldwide. The band has been honoured with multiple Grammy, BRIT, Ivor Novello, and MTV Video Music Lifetime Achievement Awards, as well as a 20th Century Style Icon award from the City of Milan. In July, they will receive the Spotify UK Lifetime Achievement Award. Tireless innovators, they are always at the vanguard of music, fashion, art, technology and film — a group with unique and everlasting appeal.

Ford Focus ST MOTORING FEATURE

The new Focus ST is a genuine performance car which, at the same time, makes everyday driving a pleasure.

With its 2.0-litre EcoBoost engine, the Focus ST delivers exhilarating power. This power is perfectly balanced by the precision control of new sports steering and enhanced Torque Vectoring Control, for exceptional grip when cornering. To add to the excitement, a specially tuned sound symposer intensifies the engine note in the cabin.

One glance at the new Focus ST and you’ll be struck by its aggressive, powerful, low-riding looks. The interior is equally bold and distinctive, with sports-influenced design, including figure-hugging Recaro sports seats and styling that’s exclusive to the ST range.

Thanks to cutting edge, performance-enhancing features, the new Focus ST can deliver thrills on request. But this car is as sophisticated as it is exhilarating. Advanced technology keeps you connected to the world outside the cabin and makes everyday driving feel refined and comfortable. Discover some of the highlights of the unique Focus ST experience.

ENJOY THE MUSIC OF A TRUE PERFORMANCE ENGINE... From your position in the driver’s seat, you can fully enjoy the thrilling sound of the Focus ST’s engine. That’s because it has a specially tuned sound symposer, which increases the sound you hear in the cabin when you accelerate hard. The sound level is controlled so you’ll hear a sporty engine noise when you put your foot down, but enjoy a quiet cabin the rest of the time.

NEW STEERING FOR PERFECT HAND POSITIONING... When you’re taking a sharp corner, the Focus ST’s new ‘Short-arm’

steering system avoids the need to cross your hands. That’s because, once you steer more than 10º offcentre, the car’s wheels turn at a progressively greater angle. You can even keep your hands perfectly positioned as you take hairpin bends. To further improve the precision of the steering, the amount of turns from lock to lock has also been reduced from 2.5 to just 1.8. Extra gauges to monitor engine performance The Focus ST has a cluster of three additional gauges at the top of the instrument panel. They enable you to monitor the engine more precisely, showing the Turbo boost up to 1.8 Bar, the oil temperature and oil pressure.

NEW FORD SYNC. ADVANCED HANDS-FREE TECHNOLOGY... With Ford SYNC voice control, you can control your music and make and take calls on your mobile, using simple, direct voice commands. SYNC will even read out loud the text messages sent to your mobile. Which means you can focus all your attention on just… driving. In addition SYNC is fitted with Emergency Assistance as standard. In the unlikely event of an accident, this technology is triggered by airbags and can use your mobile to call the emergency services for you. Emergency Assistance won ‘Best Mobile Innovation for Automotive Transport or Utilities’ at the 2012 Global Mobile Awards. NEVER MISS ANOTHER TRAFFIC SIGN Innovative Traffic Sign Recognition technology identifies traffic signs and then displays them on the instrument panel. It even flashes when you’re over the speed limit, helping you drive legally and safely. (Part of the Driver Assistance Pack) THREE-MODE ESC. THERE IF EVER YOU NEED IT... When switched fully on, Electronic Stability Control (ESC) constantly

monitors your vehicle’s progress. It senses any deviations from your chosen driving line, such as if you start to skid, and automatically corrects your road position, helping you maintain control of the car. With the Focus ST, you’ve two other options. Firstly, you can choose Sport Mode. A reduced form of ESC, this is designed to allow experienced performance drivers to ‘drift’ the car through corners on track days. Secondly, you can choose to turn the ESC fully off – for accomplished drivers only.

TWO ADVANCED SYSTEMS DESIGNED TO KEEP YOU SAFER... First, if you begin to drift out of lane, Lane Departure Warrning alerts you by vibrating your steering wheel and showing a visual warning on your driver information display. (You can set the vibration to one of three levels of sensitivity.) Then, if you're slow to react or don’t respond, Lane Keeping Aid will help guide you safely back into the correct lane. (Part of the Driver Assistance Pack) DRIVER ALERT WARNS YOU WHEN YOU’RE GETTING TIRED... Driver Alert constantly monitors your driving behaviour and is designed to detect any changes

caused by fatigue. If you’re getting tired, a warning icon appears in the display, suggesting it’s time to take a break. (Part of the Driver Assistance Pack)

AUTO HIGH BEAM. HELPING YOU SEE, WITHOUT BLINDING OTHERS... An invaluable night-driving aid, Auti High Beam temporarily dips your headlights when it detects oncoming traffic or a vehicle ahead, stopping you dazzling other drivers. It then automatically reverts back to high beam, giving you maximum visibility. (Part of the Driver Assistance Pack)

TECHNOLOGY THAT ALERTS YOU TO CARS YOU CAN’T SEE... The Blind Spot Information System uses radar sensors to see vehicles that may be hidden in your blind spot, on either side of your car. It then alerts you with an orange light, clearly displayed in the side door mirrors. (Part of the Driver Assistance Pack)

The Education Journey

The new school year is upon us once again and we at The Hype have put together an education feature spanning everything from choosing the right nursery or child minder for the tiniest tots right through to further education. It’s an educational spectrum that everyone has to go through and whether you have already made your decisions or you are still exploring your options, read on to find out a little more about what is available to you.

Starting at the youngest end of the spectrum, choosing a nursery for your precious bundle of joy is a huge decision. This is your child’s first taste of the educational system and can help structure the way that they approach the next step into ‘big school’. This is normally be the first time that your child interacts with other kids without you being there and it is a great way to prepare for school. Nurseries come in many shapes and sizes, from ones that are attached to schools to community centre and converted houses. Go and pay a visit to any prospective nurseries, looking out for good staffing numbers and large quantities of happy, smiling kids – always a good indication! Ask some of the other parents whilst you are there is a great way of knowing you are on the right track. When it comes to taking the next steps on the educational journey you have a few options. You may simply opt for the nearest local primary and secondary schools in your catchment area or you

may want to look a little further afield. Pick up a copy of the Information For Parents booklet from your local authority to find out more about the choices available to you, helping to secure a place in the school of your choice. You need to set the wheels in motion sooner rather than later so make your enquiries early on. Of course there is the independent sector to consider, as they pride themselves on offering all of the things parent’s value – high expectations, low class numbers, a strong work ethic, excellent discipline and outstanding results. The British independent sector is second to none in turning out highly educated and successful young people. After secondary education comes some of the biggest decisions, your child may choose to stay at the sixth form of their existing school or a separate institute, to study A-Levels. Of course there are lots of courses available at the nearby colleges, which are often more practical based courses and apprenticeships. They have lots of open days and taster events that will help you find out what’s on offer, helping you and your child make the right decisions. Read on - our education feature has lots of information on local schools & colleges, as well as a wide array of education services, giving you some useful dates for your diary - from open evenings to taster days. We also have music tutors, a specialist in Dyslexia tutoring and lots, lots more!

What Is Dyslexia?

Felicity Page Of Shropshire Dyslexia Tutoring Explains...

Early recognition

Felicity P. Page MA (Ed) B.Ed (Hons) AMBDA SpLD APC (Patoss) Telephone: 07983 981677 Email: dyslexiateaching@aol.co.uk Have you noticed your child is sometimes getting words muddled when they are reading or spelling? Do they find it hard to remember and carry out two or more instructions at a time? Is it difficult for them to concentrate on writing or reading without being distracted by what’s going on around them?

And are these challenges starting to have an impact on your child’s confidence and on their progress at school? If they are, have you wondered whether you child may be experiencing specific language and learning difficulties?

The speed of children’s learning and development may vary, but if your child experiences any of these challenges and they are persisting then it would be worthwhile investigating further. It may be that they have a dyslexic profile or there may be other reasons. A child with a dyslexic profile is just as bright and capable as their peers – sometimes brighter! Often they are highly imaginative and creative, and they may have exceptional technical skills. They can be quick ‘thinkers’ and ‘doers’.

What is dyslexia?

Dyslexia can be described as a specific difference in the way that some individuals learn and process information. This can present difficulties in one or more of the following areas: • Spelling and written language • Reading • Motor skills • Short-term memory • Sequencing • Auditory or visual memory According to the British Dyslexia Association, 10 per cent of the population experience dyslexia to a greater or lesser extent. While children and adults with dyslexia share features in common, each individual’s profile is unique. Dyslexia as an advantage

The same dyslexic features that create academic challenges bring exceptional talents, which should be recognised and nurtured. Entrepreneurs are five times more likely to experience dyslexia and many architects, engineers, surgeons, sportspeople, actors, explorers and craftspeople have a dyslexic style.

There are clear advantages to early recognition of a dyslexic profile. This means that your child can start to learn and practise essential literacy skills using approaches that recognise their own individual strengths and style. Recognition gives children an earlier opportunity to learn simple techniques for managing concentration and stress anxiety, allowing their confidence, learning and potential to develop.

Does my child need an assessment for dyslexia? An assessment is useful but not essential in every case. It can help to identify the way in which your child processes information as well as their strengths and weaknesses in literacy learning. Tutoring can be more carefully tailored to your child’s individual needs and style. How can I help?

As an experienced specialist dyslexia tutor and assessor I will create an individual and timebased plan for your child, for tutoring in a calm environment where distractions are minimised. All students who are keen to improve their skills will succeed!

EDUCATION FEATURE

Shrewsbury Sixth Form College There is a buzz of excitement at Shrewsbury Sixth Form College as staff students are celebrating a super set of A Level results with 20% of the students gaining A*-A grades, 45% A*-B grades and an overall pass rate of 98%. For the first time in the college’s 35 year history over 700 students were sitting A level examinations in 45 subjects equating to 2135 entries making the college the biggest A level centre in the county.

Martin Ward, Principal comments ‘A level results are so important for students in terms of their progression to University or employment. The pass rate is an impressive 98% with significantly high proportions of higher grades with A*-B grades at 45% and A*-C grades at 73%. Results at A level and AS level show a pleasing improvement which benefits students from all over the county and significant numbers from even further afield. To achieve such consistency whilst providing such a range of choice to such a large number of students is a credit to the college.”

Underlying the headline rate there are many individual success stories. The students who were offered places at Oxford or Cambridge Universities or Medicine/ Dentistry/Veterinary courses have achieved the grades required; good grades have been achieved by our international students with all the A2 students gaining A*-C grades and Jasmine Fan gaining three AS grades all at A grade in Economics, German and Maths. 60 A level students gained 3 grades of A or A*. For the second year the college has entered students for level 3 BTEC courses. 131 entries were made in BTEC Applied Science, Business, ICT and Sport and a

fantastic 62% of all entries were at Distinction level. These qualifications have a high academic content and also prepare students for the world of employment.

Whilst this time of year at Shrewsbury Sixth Form College finds us congratulating and saying a fond farewell to our leavers as they head of to higher education or employment and preparing to meet our new students at enrolment, we also take time to reflect over the past year which has been very varied! Successes range from participation in a model United Nations weekend and a week-long World War 1 art project involving students from SSFC, Germany and France which was displayed in Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery; a wealth of curriculum visits from law courts to New York City, three Engineering Education Scheme teams, a celebrating achievement evening, supporting the High Sheriff of Shropshire’s Legal Service, two musical concerts and a production of Cabaret. All this alongside watching an eclipse, celebrating diversity and difference at our Diversity Day, congratulating Hazel Rogers as she was hailed Shropshire’s Poet Laureate, Gap, HE and Careers fairs and an extensive display of students creative work from Graphics, Product Design, Fine Art, Food, Photography, Engineering, Film and Media Studies at The Show.

Shrewsbury Sixth Form College is Shropshire’s leading sixth form college offering over 45 subjects in A levels and BTEC. We consistently appear in the top 20 of sixth form colleges across the country and we offer students a unique twin campus and town centre experience.

Success for North Shropshire College A Level Students... EDUCATION FEATURE

ALEX ROBINSON

North Shropshire College (NSC) is celebrating another excellent year for A Levels with a massive 7% increase in grades A to C and a 100% pass rate in several subjects including Maths, English Language/Literature, Geography, History, ICT, and many more.

NSC has also seen an increase of 5% in grades A to C for AS Levels! Jackie Doodson, Principal and Chief Executive, said: “I am delighted with our students results, particularly those in the Arts area, which includes Fine Art, Photography, Graphics and Textiles, who achieved a 100% pass rate for the second year running. The high standard of work in the Arts was exhibited in the College foyer at the Oswestry Campus throughout June and July. The results are a tribute to the hard work of our students, the professionalism of our staff and the dedicated support of parents and guardians.”

BTEC Extended Diploma Results With most results in place for BTEC Extended Diplomas (the vocational equivalent to A Levels), over a third of students have achieved a Triple Starred Distinction (equivalent to three A* at A Level) and over half have achieved a Triple Distinction (equivalent to three A’s at A Level). These achievements once again reflect the significant value that the College adds to students during their study programmes. In particular, 82% of students studying Animal Management achieved a Triple Starred Distinction and 92% achieved a Triple Distinction and above. The Principal said: “I am encouraged by this year’s performance. We have continued the College’s yearon-year improvement in our vocational provision. I wish all our students a successful future as they

Telford youngsters enrol at the ‘Children’s University’ EDUCATION FEATURE

Dozens of Telford primary school pupils were given a taste of life in further education when they kicked off their summer holidays by attending a special ‘Children’s University’.

Telford College of Arts and Technology threw open the doors of its Wellington campus this week for four days of special taster sessions aimed at pupils from local primary schools. Around 50 youngsters, aged between 9 and 11, took part in the programme, which ended with a ‘graduation ceremony’ in the Telford College sports hall.

The Children’s University was made possible by a £15,000 grant from the Maxell Educational Trust, which covered the cost of laying on all the sessions, as well as transport for the children. Among the schools which took part were John Randall and St Mary’s Catholic school, both from Madeley, plus Short Wood primary in Wellington, and Windmill primary in Brookside. Liz Bekker, part of the team which co-ordinated the programme, said: “The youngsters had a fantastic time sampling some of the facilities which we have on offer here at Telford College. In the art and media section, they were able to try their hands at stop-motion film production and photography, as well as creating models, and designing and printing T-shirts.”

Maxell hands over £15,000 to Telford College for the Children’s University. Pictured are Maxell education trustee Ken Pattinson, TCAT chairman of governors Rick Tyrer, and Maxell trustee Mike Lowe, with students Kiera Shaw, Rebecca Peters, Janelle Arthur, and Madlyn Debrah.

“In the engineering department they were given the chance to make their own dinosaurs, as well as programming table-top robotic arms, writing computer programmes and building printed circuit boards. After spending time in our hair and beauty salon, The Retreat, they staged a fashion show which they choreographed themselves, as well as doing all the hair and make-up. And in the sports department, the youngsters had a chance to try all sorts of different activities, as well as learning about sports nutrition.” She added: “The intention was to give these children the chance to formulate some early ideas of the sort of things they might like to do in the future – things they enjoy, and things they are good at”. “It was lovely to see so many smiling faces, and we were very pleased to also see many returning youngsters who were back for more after attending a ‘taster’ day we held earlier in the year.”

Ian Pattinson, European HR Manager at Maxell who attended the graduation ceremony, told the college that the activities he had seen had ‘exceeded his expectations’. Fabulous Flowers For Every Occasion...

THE FLOWER LADY - IZY LISTON Recently I was told that in our village, Trefonen in Shropshire, I'm known as 'The Flower Lady', which is quite a nice label to have I think.

Flowers and flower arranging are my passions and I specialise in creative floral design, which I translate into imaginative floral arrangements for every occasion.

I love doing wedding flowers and the opportunity to transform a bride’s ideas, beginning with her own special bouquet and then following the theme through with bridesmaids posies, church arrangements and table arrangements.

Not just weddings though, any occasion can enjoy wonderful flowers arrangements and I am as happy creating large display pieces for corporate venues as sympathetic arrangements for funerals and memorials.

I love sharing my knowledge of flowers, colour and design and I often do demonstrations of themed flower arrangements to groups and I have a programme of creative flower arranging workshops at my studio in Trefonen, Shropshire. I am constantly challenging my own knowledge of everything to do with flowers and floral artistry and I often enter my work at flower shows and have been a top prizewinner at local, county and national flower shows.

WEDDING FLOWERS Creating wedding flowers is a joy for me. From my first meeting with you when I hear your ideas and themes to the moment I put in place the last flower in each bouquet, I work to create a totally unique design that enhances the magic of your wedding day.

Whether you choose something for your wedding like a simple seaside theme in sea blue and sand or a sumptuous medieval banquet with rich oranges and velvety autumn shades, enhanced with fruit and candelabra or perhaps a Christmas wedding in winter white, natural cones and twigs, dusted with frost, I will take your ideas and transform them into bouquets and arrangements that bring your theme to life. In busy flower shops it is easy to produce similar bouquets and table decorations for each wedding but with Fleurizi Flowers you can be assured that your design is what YOU choose - to match your ideas and to reflect your personality.

I will have two consultations with you before we finalise your designs, and then deliver on the day and remove arrangements from church to reception if required. Every wedding is different and so I don’t include prices on my web site - www.fleurizi.co.uk Fleurizi Greystones Cottage, Hollies Lane, Trefonen, Oswestry SY10 9DP Telephone: 01691 688618 or 0777 356 1040

I'm based in Aston, Shropshire but I provide coverage all over the county including Shrewsbury, Newport, Ludlow, Much Wenlock, Market Drayton, Wem plus the West Midlands and Staffordshire.

thisisnicola@hotmail.com

Call Me:

07847 186848

Nicola Gough is a wedding photographer based in Shropshire with over six years experience of shooting weddings and almost ten years of being behind the camera.

When she set out on her photographic journey back in the days of a studio, rolls of film and formal education, weddings were not on the radar. What started out as her brother in law asking her for some informal wedding pictures back in August 2009 became a dream vocation realised and 2015 has seen her celebrate her busiest summer to date. Bookings are coming through thick and fast for next year and even 2017 too.

Nicola sets out to create real, relaxed, warm images of people in love and advises that selecting your wedding photographer is one of the most important decisions to make as it's the only wedding supplier you'll spend all day with and beyond. "You have to love their work but also it helps if you get along with each other too. I always want to meet a couple before the wedding over a coffee and a chat - most of the time we don't even talk all that much about the wedding but instead just talk about films, music and food!" A self confessed film geek, Nicola looks to work with like minded creative people and loves it when couples put their own stamp on a wedding, "I love seeing people's quirks and personalities come out in the little details like movie inspired centre pieces, bouquets made from comic books and handmade gifts or favours."

Nicola's photographic style is what she describes as 'lifestyle'. "It's very real, relaxed and upbeat. My heart lies in photojournalism so I tend to photograph much of a wedding day with a very 'hands off' approach."

It's this laid back, friendly approach that Nicola says gets the best from her clients, "Most people dislike having their picture taken so it's only natural that you might feel a bit awkward to begin with but hopefully I put people at ease quickly. If you feel comfortable and relaxed, it will be noticeable in your images. My aim is to make people feel as though a friend is taking their picture. I talk to clients, avoid the 'cheesy' poses and try to make things as easy going and light as possible. And it works because so many previous clients go on to become friends and then, a year or two down the line, I get invited into their homes when the pitter patter of tiny feet comes along. It's hands down the best job in the world!" www.weddingphotographyinshropshire.co.uk

Autumn Beauty Tips_Double Page Editorial 04/08/2015 08:49 Page 1

Autumn Beauty Tips & Trends

Autumn Skin You Will Fall For Ditch the soap – It leaves your skin dry so switch to a soap-free hydrating cleanser when Autumn comes. Exfoliate with an oil-based scrub, start the new season off with a full-body exfoliation treatment. Oil-based scrubs are brill because they hydrate too. Creams provide a stronger oily barrier, helping to reduce water loss from the outer layer of skin and hydrating it all at the same time. Hands often get neglected meaning they become dry and cracked during Autumn so give them a head start by moisturizing now to ensure soft, supple hands right through the cold season and don’t forget to protect your lips to prevent dryness and cracking - lip balms are perfect for this.

Natural Brows Full brows are more flattering so don’t go over the top with the tweezers. Get rid of strays where necessary and then fill in brows with a pencil one shade lighter than your natural brow colour. This gives a softer, natural look. Avoid using your own shade or darker as this can look harsh. Smooth Hair The Safe Way Okay, so you don’t want to shell out £100’s for a salon straightening treatment. The Good news is you can get frizz-free locks at home. New treatments work like the salon service, using keratin to temporarily fill in holes in the hair shaft. Shampoo or spritz on the formula, dry your hair and then seal in sleekness by flat-ironing – this is the key to locking in the lusciousness. The result is smooth hair for up to 30 days –

Whoop! Try Organix Brazilian Keratin Therapy 30-Day Smoothing Treatment available from www.feelunique.com - £12.99.

Mineral Make-Over If you’ve not already been tempted by mineral makeup, now might be the time to get in on the trend. The latest mineral products boast ingredients that are kind to your skin, like soybean extract and seaweed, in addition they are free of preservatives, synthetics, and artificial oils. Two top picks are: Makeup pro by Bobbi Brown - Their first mineral product - Skin Foundation Mineral Makeup SPF 15 available from www.bobbibrown.co.uk at £29.00 and the new pressed mineral eye shadow from Bare Minerals available from www.bareminerals.co.uk

The Bob Is Back – And it Looks Good! Need a new hair style? Consider the bob, yes it’s back and it’s the hottest chop around. The bob suits most face shape’s, it can be styled straight or wavy and still look great! For the bang on trend look go short, stopping at the jawline or try the slightly longer, below-the-chin option – recently seen on Emily Clarke (Game of Thrones – Daenerys). Seeing Red We have recently seen some big names experimenting with going red: Red hair warms up all skin tones and there are loads of at-home foam hair colours available to choose from. If you’re fair then Copper tones are for you, Auburn is ideal for olive skin and for dark skin tones try Mahogany.

01743 343928 A Salon on the Rise: Francesco Group Shrewsbury

Francesco Group Shrewsbury is celebrating 30 years in business this year and in it’s 30th year the salon shows no sign of slowing down!

At the close of 2014 the Franchise was taken over by Greg Corbett and in the Spring, the salon underwent a complete makeover! Greg joined Francesco Group over 15 years ago at the tender age of 16 and became a Franchisee for the first time 5 years ago at the Knowle salon. He has since run the successful flagship salon in House of Fraser in Birmingham and when the opportunity came to acquire Shrewsbury, he jumped at the chance; “Since joining the Group I envisioned myself in Shrewsbury, it’s my dream location! I am thrilled to be working with the talented team here and look forward to relocating to the area with my family later this year.” The recent refurbishment has completely refreshed the salon and created an idyllic environment for clients to come and relax and enjoy the Francesco Group experience. Clients will be able to explore new products at the exclusive retail pods and will be kept up to date with all the Group and salon news on the new plasma televisions displaying ‘Francesco Group TV’. The new backwash area has a ‘spa-like’

shrewsbury@francescogroup.co.uk atmosphere where clients can relax and take advantage of an extensive menu of specialised hair treatments, whilst taking their pick from the new complimentary refreshment menu.

The team at Shrewsbury are experiencing a renewed passion for their craft and throughout the year, the whole team will be embarking on new training courses to explore their passions and enhance their skills and knowledge, ensuring they possess the most up to date knowledge about the latest trends and techniques. The salon’s Technician, Kathy will be embarking on the Wella Professionals Master Colour Programme this summer to work towards achieving the title of Master Colour Expert and new Stylist, Kirk is attending the Group’s intensive Finishing School this Autumn.

The salon will also be welcoming Greg’s wife to the team in September, as joint Salon Director. Amy is an experienced Senior Stylist, who has worked with Francesco Group for over 10 years and is highly skilled in all aspects of hairdressing, particularly cutting, colouring and bridal hair for all hair types. The future of the Shrewsbury salon is looking good; Greg said, “I am really looking forward to building up the senior members and watching everyone grow together as a team. I think the salon can be taken to even greater success and I can’t wait to be a part of that.”
