The Olive Tree is a unique Mediterranean bistro & bar nestled in the heart of vibrant Frankwell, Shrewsbury, which brings the ‘holiday experience’ alive - even on a chilly evening in Shropshire!
My husband Stef and I both love tapas, and we had heard great things about The Olive Tree, so we were excited to try it out. We went on a busy Friday evening and decided to have some drinks in the exquisite terraced garden to the rear of the bistro, a beautiful alfresco dining area, with a very Mediterranean feel, with rustic walls, pretty lighting and a beautiful grapevine growing over one of the seating areas.
Becky, Sam and the team offer Mediterranean tapas, as well as a classic Bistro menu; along-side stunning daily specials created lovingly by the chefs, even tapas novices will feel right at home, with lots of advice and guidance available from the friendly staff. Chef Sam came out to greet us and chat about the options available, it all sounded amazing so we asked him if he could ‘surprise us’ with a selection of tapas, after all, he is the expert! After checking if there were any special dietary requirements or anything either of us didn’t like, he set off to get started. We sat for a while to enjoy the lovely setting and relax with our drinks and then went inside, there is a very authentic feel to The Olive Tree, with stone floors, rustic walls and pretty ‘windows’ painted with views of the Med. There’s a relaxed vibe and welcoming atmosphere, which instantly make you feel at ease and the aroma wafting from the kitchen is glorious!
We took our seats for the first course “The Olive Tree Sharer” Platter of Mediterranean cured meats, olives, hummus, tomatoes, feta cheese & breads – a mixture of flavours that blend together in blissful harmony, the freshness of each ingredient was evident in every bite; simply delicious. Then began the steady flow of tapas, first of which were Patatas Bravas, Moroccan Lamb and Chilli Spaghetti – the lamb was braised in aromatic spices with tomatoes and chickpeas - amazing! The Chilli Spaghetti with sun-dried tomatoes, chilli and garlic was a glorious combination with a real kick. Then came Grilled Halloumi – stacked with aubergine and tomatoes with harissa drizzle which was stunning, and Gambas al Chorizo – pan fried king prawns and chorizo, which is one of my absolute favourites, it oozed flavour! Then came Spicy Chicken Livers – with rosemary, garlic, sea salt and chilli – I wasn’t sure about this one but my reservations were very quickly blown away with one bite! They were juicy and flavoursome, the spices rounding them off perfectly.
We ended with Vanilla Ice Cream with Amaretto and Coffee – a scoop of ice cream floating in Amaretto and sprinkled delicately with coffee – which was the perfect thing to complete a wonderful meal. The food at The Olive Tree is without doubt some of the best we have tasted and the team are fun, friendly and passionate about their food and the beautiful terraced garden brings a whole new dimension to the experience, all you need to do is sit back and relax, with a nice glass of red and enjoy the flavours!

Jasmine and I travelled to North Shropshire College (NSC), home to their very own teaching restaurant, Scholars, a student led operation with budding young Chefs. With an exceptional Head Chef Lecturer Dan Tompson behind them this truly was a Monday Evening not to be forgotten. Scholars promote a newly developed Menu; all of which was chosen by the students to reflect the creativity and artistic nature behind the ideology of Scholars. The menu boasts a meal, side and drink for only £3 between 12pm and 1.30pm on a Tuesday and Wednesday, as well as two and three course formal lunch and dinner for diners in the evenings.
It all began with a warm welcome from 3 members of the front of house team, opening doors, leading us to our seats and offering us a shabby chic water decanter to truly wet our appetites. As we observed the restaurant we saw how slick of an operation Scholar’s really is. Live cooking happening in front of our very eyes made us look in awe at the coolness and precision these young students were displaying – few gadgets, little gizmo’s – just good ‘ole scrumptious food doing the talking! With the smell radiating from the kitchen I quickly asked our waiter for the evening, Brendan, for the menu, by this point, we were ravenous! The menu itself was slight in stature but boasted extraordinary dishes that any “foodie” would appreciate.
We began with the poached fillet of cod with cheddar cheese, mash, and lemon with dill cream, topped with crispy Carrot. This dish was well thought out, with Jasmine commenting on the crispy topping on the dish, which in her words made it complete. The fish itself was juicy and the lemon and dill cream complimented it all expertly. I, on the other hand, chose the slow roasted tomato and brie tartlet with dressed leaves. The beauty of this dish was the simplicity. The Brie gave it a punch, whereas the tomato oozed flavor. A mouthful of each aspect combined with the dressed leaves left me questioning were the students really making such excellent food on their own – the answer, a resounding yes!
Next up we had our mains. This could only be described as protein heaven. Jaz opted for the roast pork fillet, sage and onion farce, pea and cabbage fricassee, potato rosti, black pudding croquettes, honey glazed carrots and apple jus. Although there are a lot of elements to the dish they all combined to create an ensemble piece of art. A meal always begins with the visual – this truthfully would win an award for presentation. I stole one of the black pudding croquettes which were little portions of smiles, making you crave more… Yum! I chose the toasted brioche bun with grilled pate, blue cheese, a BBQ sauce, house coleslaw, onion rings and triple cooked chips. The effort that went into the chips was commendable – triple cooked and well worth the work. Although you may think it’s merely a burger – trust me, this wouldn’t be out of place in an American Diner in the heart of Texas! Whatever they make the coleslaw with needs to remain a closely guarded secret because it was simply gorgeous! Well done guys. Finally – the moment Jasmine was waiting for; Desserts. Jasmine settled for the salted caramel chocolate mousse with hazelnut praline. The mousse was light, hazelnut praline crunchy; all joining together to create a perfect harmony. I thought I’d indulge my sweet side with an apple and sultana streusel tart with crème anglaise and ice cream. There is no better feeling than the coolness of the ice cream on your pallet after such a satisfying meal. The crumbly top of the tart with ripe sweet apple cutting through was the perfect ending to a fantastic meal! I thank all the students for their attentiveness on this wonderful evening, in particular, Dan and his team for making each dish a triumph. Three courses for only £8 including a hot or soft drink is a steal. I thought it would have been much more expensive! I was taken aback. We will unquestionably be returning, principally as the menu rotates each week – we wait to see what’s next?

This event has grown into one of the largest Christmas celebrations in Shropshire and includes an assortment of entertainment, including enormous fairground rides positioned throughout the town centre. This creates quite a spectacle with some of the best rides in the UK. 1000’s of people enjoy the night with the streets packed with visitors, and there is something for everyone be it young or old. Safety is a priority with highly trained local security team managing the event and an Ambulance team on hand. The award winning Porthywaen Silver Band play Christmas carols and are supported by various local choirs and musical groups. We have a huge music stage to support local talent and street entertainers walk the town performing fire acts throughout the evening.
A synthetic ice rink is located on Festival Square where local schools are invited to have lots of skating fun, followed by the general public after 7pm. This was introduced a few years ago and has become an outstanding success. As well as being open for late night bargains, the Indoor Market is the home of Santa’s Grotto where children are invited to meet Santa in aid of the local Hope House Charity. A huge Christmas Market selling street food and Christmas gifts is set up along the main streets of the town and is incredibly popular. To complete the celebrations there is a massive firework display at Cae Glas Park. As you can imagine this has become a spectacular night which would rival any larger town and helps make Oswestry a special place for great events.

Haughton Honey comes from the meadows, gardens, trees and farmland across the English countryside and has traces of dandelion, hawthorn, chestnut, lime, blackberry, clover, rosebay willowherb and other assorted wild flowers. Our raw honey comes straight from the hive, is cold extracted and never pasteurised, which means that it retains all of the natural enzymes and proteins that make English honey so special. And of course, every jar is different depending upon where the bees and apiaries are located, what time of year it is and what types of flowers the bees are collecting their nectar and pollen from.

Roll out to about 5mm thick and cut out your gingerbread men. Refrigerate the uncooked, cut biscuit shapes on a baking tray prior to cooking. About 15 minutes in the fridge is long enough to ensure your gingerbread biscuits retain their shape during baking. 4. If you don't have a gingerbread man cutter then use whatever you have - stars and hearts are just as good. 5. Put a sheet of baking paper on a tray and evenly space out the biscuits, bake for 10-15 minutes until golden brown. 6. Leave to firm up for a couple of minutes before placing on a wire rack to cook. 7. Once cooled, decorate with icing. Ready to use tubes of icing are great for decorating and are a lot less messy!

Method
1. Combine all the ingredients in a large bowl up to and including the rum. Cover then leave to soak overnight. 2. Soften the butter, beat it with the sugar in a bowl until light and fluffy then beat in the egg slowly, a little at a time, until combined. Fold in the soaked fruit and all the other ingredients. Lightly butter a pudding basin and fill with the mixture. Cover the surface with greaseproof paper, then with two layers of buttered foil, making a pleat in the centre to allow for the pudding to rise. Tie string tightly around the basin rim to secure the foil. 3. Place in a saucepan, with an upturned saucer in the base, pour in water so that it comes halfway up the sides of the bowl, then cover with a lid and simmer for 4 hours. Top up the water during cooking. Allow it cool then cover with greaseproof and clingfilm and store for upto 2 weeks, in the fridge until needed. 4. To reheat the pudding on Christmas Day, cover with foil and steam for 1 hour 30 minutes. Or cover with clingfilm, pierced in the top and microwave on high 5 minutes.

The Affair - Season 2_Double Page Editorial 21/08/2015 13:24 Page 1
“Do you honestly think things turn out for the best? That true love conquers all?”
Alison - Season 2 Trailer Season 1 of Golden Globe-winning drama THE AFFAIR explored the emotional effects of an extramarital relationship. We met Noah a New York City schoolteacher and novelist who was happily married, but had a deep resentment of his dependence on his wealthy father-in-law and Alison a young waitress trying to piece her life and marriage back together after the tragedy of losing her son. The provocative drama unfolded when Alison and Noah met in Montauk at the end of Long Island.
Season one of The Affair ended on a highly dramatic note, with police arresting Noah (Dominic West) for Scotty's murder just as he was settling down on the sofa of his NYC apartment with Alison (Ruth Wilson) and their child.
But is he guilty? We don't know what happened but there must be so much more to find out about those fateful events that started on that family Montauk holiday. What we do know is that we'll get answers in the second series of the show, which is due to air later this year. From the trailer it's clear that season two starts where season one finished. Cole (Joshua Jackson) has tracked down Alison in New York, but she tells him “I think you should leave”.
Noah hasn't been sentenced yet and his bail is set at $500,000, which suggests he won't necessarily be behind bars at all & Helen (Maura Tierney) is clearly on the war path and doesn’t want Alison “anywhere near” her kids. And it’s no surprise that after all the betrayals in season one, love doesn't look like it's having much success, with Alison saying in the trailer: “Do you honestly think things turn out for the best? That true love conquers all?”
We will see more of the past before we get to the present, which means there's more of the events leading up to Scotty's death than we've seen so far. We might get to hear Cole and Helen’s split narratives to get their side of things.
The evidence the detective is arresting Noah on is by no means conclusive, so he has his work cut out to figure out what actually happened, and prove it. It’s agonisingly mysterious! The anticipation is almost as intense as that first meeting between Noah and Alison in the quaint Lobster Roll Restaurant - which seems like a lifetime ago now!

New Ford S-Max
Intelligent technologies and ultra-contemporary styling, exhilarating performance and precision handling: all set the All-New S-MAX apart from the crowd.
Flexibility, practicality and efficiency are built-in. And with a range of remarkable technologies, this is one of the smartest seven seat vehicles around. Active life? You’ve found the car that’s made for it.
CONFIDENCE IN CHANGEABLE CONDITIONS... An available intelligent All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system can determine how much grip, cornering balance and responsiveness is required in wet, dry or icy conditions and on varying terrain. The technology is able to send drive to the front or rear axle depending on requirements. And this ‘torque on demand’ system delivers exceptional handling and improved efficiency.
POWER-ASSISTED STEERING THAT RESPONDS TO EVERY SITUATION... At low speeds, the system makes wheel turns feel lighter and easier, improving manoeuvrability. At high speeds, when you need greater control, it firms up the steering. Now with drift control, EPAS also takes into account crosswinds and
other driving conditions, while active nibble control reduces any unwanted vibration in the steering wheel.
SEES WHAT’S COMING, FROM EITHER SIDE... A tiny (optional) camera, on the front of the All-New S-MAX, relays a split-screen image to your car’s Multi-Function Display so you can see vehicles, cyclists or pedestrians coming from either side. This optional new technology option is invaluable if you’re edging out of a narrow parking space, or onto a busy road where your view is obstructed.
STRESS-FREE PARKING AND PULLING OUT - Park Assist.... Using a combination of different technologies, Active Park Assist does more than steer you into parallel parking spots. With Park Out Assist (POA), it helps you pull out of them, too. The Perpendicular Parking (PPA) system can sense if there’s space for your car to fit, then reverse you in. Side Parking Aid (SPA) also warns you if there are any lateral obstructions. Easier reversing, as you can view what’s behind - Bollards, railings low walls… the rear view camera (option) shows whatever’s behind you on a screen built into the centre stack display and activates
Ford Furrows DPS_Double Page Editorial 08/10/2015 13:53 Page 2
automatically when you select reverse gear. The system also displays virtual guidelines, to help you park in the smallest of spaces.
A PANORAMIC ROOF FOR A LIGHTER, AIRIER FEEL... At the press of a button, the electronically operated roof blind glides away, allowing natural light to stream in through the fixed panoramic roof. At the same time, solar reflective glass keeps you cool and protects you from harmful UV rays. SMART SEATING SYSTEM FOR ULTIMATE FLEXIBILITY... Versatile seating provides generous space for up to seven, with folding second- and third-row seats enabling numerous seating and stowage configurations. For example, the second-row and third-row seats can be folded flat at the press of a button making instant room for your sporting gear or bulky DIY purchases GENEROUS WITH PERFORMANCE. ECONOMICAL WITH FUEL.... Gone are the days when you had to choose between power and
efficiency. With the All-New S-MAX, ingenious design, innovative engineering and technologies like Auto Start-Stop enable you to enjoy the perfect combination of both.
EcoBoost: no compromise power and efficiency -Two EcoBoost petrol engine options use a combination of direct fuel injection and turbo-charging, to deliver outstanding levels of performance and economy: A new 1.5L EcoBoost petrol engine adds to the revolutionary EcoBoost range. Cleverly downsized from the 1.6L EcoBoost, the engine provides excellent emissions and fuel economy along with 160PS of power. An even more powerful 2.0 litre EcoBoost option delivers an impressive 240PS. A RANGE OF DIESEL OPTIONS... Prefer diesel? An advanced AllNew 2.0L TDCi gives you a choice of four power options: 120PS, 150PS, 180PS and a bi-turbo 210PS. Every engine incorporates the latest technology to improve power, torque and economy,
while lowering emissions: an enhanced design delivers low CO2 while improving fuel economy.
YOUR PROTECTION IS OUR PRIORITY A system that can help protect pedestrians - Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection detects people (and large objects) in the road ahead, or who could cross the vehicle’s path, and warns you of their presence. If you don’t respond, the system automatically applies the brakes. This new technology is designed to help reduce the severity of accidents, or help avoid them altogether, and functions at speeds of up to 50 mph (80 km/h).

“A beautiful partnership for expanding salons business”
TELFORD COLLEGE OF ARTS & TECHNOLOGY
Haybridge Road, Wellington, Telford, TF1 2NP. Tel: 01952 642200 or Learner Services: 01952 642237 An expanding beauty salons business has praised its partnership with Telford College of Arts and Technology – describing the apprenticeship programme as a key factor in its success.
Glow Beauty Studio was founded at Teagues Crescent in Trench in the summer of 2012, and has since opened a second based at Gnosall, near Newport. Three permanent staff are now based at each site, alongside owner Natasha Grigg who divides her time between the two.She said: “When we set up as a new business, the cost implications of taking on new members of staff were a big issue for us. “That’s why we decided to go down the apprenticeship route, and the partnership we have built up with Telford College has been brilliant. “They have given us a choice of potential apprentices, and offered us all the help and support we need.”
So far, Glow has taken on three apprentices through TCAT, and two of them – Ellie Boden from Admaston, and Dee Parsons from Little Dawley – remain key members of the team. Natasha said: “Both of them came in with level two qualifications in beauty, and we have worked with Telford College to take them through their level three beauty apprenticeship. “It is an ongoing situation for us. As people like Ellie and Dee complete their apprenticeship and take on full-time jobs, we need more juniors to come through and follow in their footsteps.“So I am sure we will be looking to take on additional apprentices in partnership with Telford College as our business continues to grow in the coming months.”
Photos: Ellie and Dee at work The two Glow studios offer a wide range of services including tanning, nail treatments, eyebrow shaping, waxing, facials, eyelash extensions and make-up. The team also offer an array of massages and other holistic treatments such as reflexology and Hopi ear candles. Natasha is no stranger to the beauty therapy qualifications on offer at Telford College – she studied there for her own NVQs in Beauty, and Nail Technology in 2006.
When she left TCAT, she worked at several five-star salons and spas, including a spell on a cruise ship, before returning to her Telford roots to launch the Glow business.“Since our opening in August 2012, we have surpassed all expectations,” she said. “Our second salon, The Beauty Station by Glow, opened in Gnosall last December, and has been well received. And the apprentices we have taken on, in partnership with Telford College, have been an important part of our success.” Hayley Corbett, Apprenticeship Recruitment Manager at Telford College said: “At the college we work with our current students to offer work experience placements alongside their course. “It’s great to see how apprenticeships have helped Natasha grow the business; the team has provided such fantastic support to Ellie and Dee, mentoring them to become their future therapists.” If you are a small employer looking to recruit an apprentice and would like to find out more about the Apprenticeship Grant for Employers, please contact the Apprenticeship Team at TCAT on 01952 642452 or email apprentices@tcat.ac.uk

e are a small, family run rescue centre situated in The picturesque village of Grinshill - 8 miles north of Shewsbury (off the a 49 Whitchurch Road).
Our house and kennels nestle into the base of Grinshill hill and we are surrounded by woods and fields - haven for cats and dogs alike. We started rescuing approximately 30 years ago, taking in stray, battered and abused animals and generally helping people when they could no longer look after their animals for one reason or another. No matter how much space is made with new kennels and a cattery, there is never enough room - we always have waiting lists for dogs & cats to be re-homed. Our aim is to rehabilitate and re-home all animals to suitable, caring homes. All homes are checked before and after rehoming. The dogs are vet checked, vaccinated, microchipped and a voucher towards neutering is given and all cats are neutered, microchipped and vaccinated. As we are only a small sanctuary are animals all have individual love and attention and we never put a healthy dog down. We are limited to what we can do by the strength of our resources, both financial and human. We are short in both areas and are appealing for help. We need more people to help raise funds and carry out other voluntary tasks, such as ‘dog walking’, if you can spare a little of your time then your help would be most welcome OPEN... Monday - Thursday between 11:30 AM & 1:30 PM FRIDAY CLOSED... Saturday and Sunday open 12 midday to 3 PM DOG WALKING AVAILABLE EVERY DAY 9 AM TO 1:30 PM

Bringing A Night Out To Your Workout! Clubbercise At Bonds Shrewsbury...
Since having a baby a few years ago I have been struggling to find a way to enjoy myself whilst getting fit without feeling self-conscious. Before kids my favourite past time was clubbing and 90s dance music and I was amazed to find an actual class that would incorporate all of these aspects.
I entered the hall for the clubbercise class and was immediately met by the familiar and loved sounds of the 90s, as I passed into the room the lights were off and the floor was lit up with disco lights and the other members neon outfits and glow sticks. Immediately at ease due to the dim lighting and familiar music I was warmly greeted to my fellow clubbers of a wide range of ages, both male and female. After brief greetings I was passed my own glow sticks and the music and routine began with Jac on stage leading us all. The routine began with a warm up, stretching all the forgotten muscles to a well-known soundtrack. Within the hour session the beat increased along with the amount of
movement and glow stick waving until we were all dancing away burning from 500-1000 calories without even realising it! After a brief dance off we were all lead into a warm down, re-stretching and relaxing all of our muscles again aided by the amazing music and reassurance and guidance from Jac. Reminiscent of my clubbing days but without the alcohol and self-consciousness, at the end of the session everyone had worked hard but were still in brilliant spirits. All of the routines were easy to follow and you could throw yourself into them as much as you felt that you could – after all everything was only lit by the forgiving disco lights and although very much part of the group you felt that you could work to your own ability with Jacs guidance without any pressure in your own little clubbercise world. I am definitely hooked and will be back for the next session for a little bit or reminiscent escapism and I will definitely be bringing my nearest and dearest.
For £5 including your glow sticks it is not only much cheaper than a night out clubbing, you also wake up feeling revived and toned. Try it for yourself and bring a friend by contacting Jac on Facebook or call her on 07856588740 or email jackie311273@gmail.com or to pre-register a class go to: www.bookwhen.com/4mhu2.
