La Dolce Vita THE HYPE REVIEW
La Dolce Vita is a small, family-run Italian restaurant in Shrewsbury that aims to offer a real taste of Italy, in a friendly and relaxed environment. I had read good things about La Dolce Vita in the recent press, so was excited to have the opportunity to dine there.
As we entered this quaint restaurant on a fabulous summers evening, we were greeted with a warm welcome by front of house manager Luigi, which instantly put both Eileen and I at ease. I had already found out that Luigi was married to Patricia and that they had been running the restaurant since 1999. Patricia spent 14 years in Italy, which is where she honed her culinary skills. Their son Gennaro studied at Radbrook College, and works alongside Patricia in the kitchen. Gennaro is an award winning chef and is also a member of the Welsh Culinary team. Culinary skills of the highest calibre! Certainly a review I was looking forward to… We were escorted to the table and handed the menus. On the drive up, Eileen and I had been talking about olives (sad I know) and so it was the first thing we ordered, along with our drinks. As it was a school night we opted for soft
drinks, however there is a very good selection of authentic wines and beers to choose from.
The menu was extensive, and catered for a variety of different palettes. For starters, Eileen opted for the Carpaccio – wafer thin fillet of beef, topped with rocket and parmesan salad and truffle oil. I settled on the Crostini – toasted Italian bread topped with various exciting toppings – I was looking forward to seeing what these toppings were!
cannelloni with Swiss chard, smoked mozzarella, topped with spiced tomato sauce and parmesan cheese. Whilst we waited for our starters we munched on the delectable olives and breadsticks. The olives were some of the best I had tasted. We didn’t have to wait too long for the starters to arrive, and when they did they were both presented really well, and the aromas were out of this world - We tucked straight in! The blend of textures and flavour of the Carpaccio were balanced perfectly, and was a big hit with Eileen – which was evident as there was nothing left on her plate.
My Crostini bread was very pleasant surprise indeed – 4 different toppings, from goats cheese to chilli mushrooms, to Olive tapenade and finally roasted vegetables. They really did go down a treat, with my personal favourite being the roasted vegetables! For our mains, Eileen went for something she hadn’t tried before. Pescatrice – Monk fish, barbecued aubergine with tomato and peppers. I was a big fan of Cannelloni, so my main was a no brainer – Cannelloni Di Bietola – homemade
That setup us up perfectly for the mains, and before we knew it they arrived at the table. Again the aromas where something else! I didn’t waste any time in diving straight in. The combination of flavours of the Cannelloni worked really well and tantalised my taste buds with
La Dolce Vita_Double Page Editorial 17/07/2014 18:22 Page 2
every bite. The sauce had a nice kick to it, and the chard had a unique earthy taste which I really enjoyed, as it’s the first time I had Swiss chard – thumbs up from me! Eileen commented that the Monkfish had a texture like no other fish she had eaten before – it was meaty, plump and juicy and was oozing with flavour. It went really well with the smoky texture of the aubergine, tomato and peppers. I could tell Eileen enjoyed it, from the noises of approval she was making.
We were totally stuffed – but had heard so much about the high quality desserts. After pondering for a while, Eileen opted for the Peanut parfait on a lime base, with homemade banana ice scream, rum jelly and caramelised banana. Being a chocolate lover – I had the Chocolate torte, with homemade ice cream, liquorice sponge and chocolate soil. In the words of my teenage sister – OMG! The desserts were well worth waiting for. The peanut parfait was stunning, with the ice cream tasting of pure banana. Eileen had died and gone to heaven. My dessert was of the same high quality, the different types of chocolates on my plate were to my liking, and now I was the one making all the right noises!
La dolce Vita had lived up to my every expectation. The calibre of culinary skills showed in the food, and the ambience and décor was superb. They regularly hold Gourmet Evenings to celebrate the best of Italian cooking and to show another side of La Dolce Vita – the world where Gennaro , is given free rein to design and prepare a selection of unique dishes - such as Foie gras ice cream or Pigeon breast with Pear pureé, pear and Sambuca salad and Liquorice sauce. Top Marks from the Hype team!

Steak & Grill THE HYPE REVIEW
We were lucky enough to be invited to the The Steak & Grill Mediterranean Restaurant in Frankwell, which is conveniently situated opposite the Theatre Severn.
The restaurant had recently changed hands and had been refurbished, so I was very much looking forward to the review. My wife and I walked in and were greeted by restaurant owner Hatice, with a big friendly smile on her face, which instantly put us both at ease. We were escorted to our table and handed the menus. We took time to take in the settings and décor which was elegantly done. The combination of colours really gave the restaurant a Mediterranean feel.
We ordered soft drinks, although there is a large selection of wines and beers to choose from. We checked out the menu, which was easy and simple to understand. For starters my wife settled on the Garlic Mushrooms, and I opted for the Fried Calamari. For mains it had to be a steak for both of us. Riz ordered an 8oz Rump Steak for her main, and I opted for an
10oz Sirloin. We were both excited to see what they brought out.
Shortly after ordering the waitress brought over toasted bread with Hummus to nibble on whilst we waited for our starters. The bread was lovely and warm and the Hummus was tangy with a hint of garlic. It wasn’t long before our starters came out. The aromas were out of this world, and the food was presented well – we
tucked straight in. The Calamari was accompanied by a side salad and a tartar sauce, and the Garlic Mushrooms with toasted bread. Riz loves garlic and mushrooms, so the starter went down well, with her taking some personal pics to put on her Facebook page. My calamari was tender with a crispy coating, and the tartar sauce was a perfect accompaniment to it.
We were both ready for our mains and we weren’t disappointed. The steaks were
Steak & Grill_Double Page Editorial 17/07/2014 13:03 Page 2
accompanied with homemade chips and summer vegetables. They looked so nice, that we nearly forgot to photograph them! We had them well done, and in my opinion they were cooked to perfection. Even though they were well done, the knife sliced through like it was butter. The sirloin is a slightly richer piece of meat, with lots of natural juices and was flavoursome with every bite. Riz wasn’t saying much…she was too busy eating, which is a sure fire sign of approval. She did manage to comment that the meat was tender, succulent and seasoned well. The steak was some of the best I had the pleasure of devouring, it’s just a shame that we didn’t have any room for dessert. We will definitely be dining with Hatice and her team again!
Hatice and Zeki aren’t new to serving food in Shrewsbury. They have been successfully running another food establishment for the last 12 years – The Hype wishes Hatice and Zeki the best of success with their new venture. Steak & Grill are definately raising the ‘steaks’ in Shrewsbury...

Dorrington Old Hall
When the opportunity arose for a review, at Dorrington Old Hall, I eagerly volunteered to go. I had heard fantastic things about the restaurant, which is run and owned by Dr Haider. Dorrington Old Hall Persian Restaurant is situated in the charming village of Dorrington, just outside of Shrewsbury on the A49. The black and white Tudor period building is very impressive, set back off the main road, it has a lovely garden area with seating, which is perfect for a lovely summer evening. Dr Haider, has been running Dorrington Old Hall for around five years now and has built up a reputation for being one of the best chef’s in Shropshire, even winning ‘Shropshire Curry Chef of the Year’ for 2013/14.
My husband and I were excited to try Persian food and we were warmly welcomed by Dr Haider, who invited us to sit on some plump comfy leather sofas, near the bar. There is a large selection of wines, beers and spirits available and Dr Haider had mentioned a lovely Lebanese red wine from Bekaa Valley, which I really liked the sound of and he explained that it
THE HYPE REVIEW really went perfectly with the food. Stef opted for an alcohol free ’Supermalt Fusion Mango’ drink, as he had drawn the short straw on driving!
As we were new to Persian food, we decided that we would try a ‘Mazeh’ style dinner, which is a great way to try lots of different dishes. Stef and I took a moment to enjoy the surroundings outside and
also some of the authentic Persian rugs, which adorn the walls within the restaurant, which were stunning. The setting is relaxed and comfortable and there is ample seating that can accommodate any party size, from a romantic meal for two, to a large party.
The appetizer arrived and we were blown away before we even sampled the first mouthful. The platter was full of
mesmerizing dishes and the famous light, airy & crispy flatbreads looked amazing.
We began with the marinated chicken breast, as the flavours worked their way over our taste buds, we looked at each other and knew this was going to be a very special experience. I have eaten quite a lot of chicken, but I have NEVER tasted chicken this good before! There was Mast-o-Baddemjan, which is roasted aubergines with garlic, cumin, salt and cracked black pepper, folded in yoghurt. Mahi Biryan is delicious deep fried River Cobbler, with onion and carom seeds and then coated in a Tempura style batter, it was mouth-watering, the light crispy batter melting away, exposing the flavours beneath. Salad Olivich with chicken, chopped egg, fresh fruit and pickled cucumber folded in mayonnaise and extra virgin olive oil, Homous, made from creamed chick peas, tahini, garlic, fresh lime juice, salt and extra virgin olive oil and marinated olives with onions, tomatoes, lemon, cumin, herbs and pepper, which were absolutely amazing. The amalgamation of these dishes, along with the intricate use of the herbs, spices and seeds, is a delight to the palette and perfectly partnered by the flatbread,
Dorrington Old Hall1_Double Page Editorial 15/07/2014 16:58 Page 2
which was so light and airy, it looked like it could float away.
Stef and I were so impressed with the appetizers that we could barely wait to taste the main courses, we chatted and finished off our drinks. I have to say, the wine went down all too well and Stef really enjoyed his ‘Supermalt’ with its light fruity taste, so we decided that refills were definitely a great idea.
The main courses arrived and we dived in, there was Khoresht-e-Gheimeh which is a Persian split pea stew, Ghormeh Sabiz, which some consider to be the national dish of Persia, it is deliciously savoury and loaded with flavours, such as green herbs, rose coco beans, spinach, onions, fenugreek, parsley and sun dried limes, a truly stunning combination. Fesenjan is a traditional stew, which delightfully sweet and sour, bursting with taste. Boneless chicken breast cooked with onion, tomatoes in pomegranate juice, walnuts, almonds, olive oil, salt and pepper and Gosht-e-Akbari a sensual lamb curry cooked with swede and whole spices, combined with onions, tomatoes, bay leaves, cloves, cinnamon, brown cardamom pods, fresh garlic, ginger & salt, which was simply divine.
As well as the ‘Mazeh’ dinner option, there is a full a` la carte menu available to choose from.
I can honestly say that I have fallen in love with Persian cuisine after just one visit, the exquisite combinations within the different dishes has left me wanting more and I will definitely be returning to Dorrington Old Hall again, very soon!

Electronic Cigarettes The easier way to quit 34, unhealthy, overweight, a mild asthmatic and worst of all I had been smoking since the age of 15 – not a great combination I know! I had tried giving up smoking so many times before without any lengthy time of success. The most I had done was a month, and that was only due to me fasting in Ramadan. I had gone cold turkey, used patches and chewing gum and still smoked around 15 a day. Even now I have 4 packets of un-opened patches at home!
I had to fix this addiction and quick, as my asthma was starting to deteriorate. Sometimes I thought that I don’t need a fag, but still had one because I was bored or I was around friends that were smoking. The only ones that I really enjoyed was the first one in the morning and after a good meal.
I had heard about electronic cigarettes, and seen a few people using them so I went into my local Puff in Peace store to find out more.
I was very impressed with the level of service that I was offered. The staff were very consultative, and spent a good 20 minutes asking about my smoking habits and recommending the right kit for me. In the end I decided on the Titan 2. It came with the electronic cigarette, USB charger and 2 bottles of fluid. I opted for watermelon and cherry.
That was last year, and 12 month on from my first visit to Puff in Peace, I know don’t smoke conventional cigarettes. I feel healthier, my asthma is improved and I have more money in my back pocket – bonus! I am pretty sure that this wouldn’t be the case if it wasn’t for the advice and detailed explanation given to me at my first visit to the Puff in Peace store. I would definitely recommend that you pay them a visit and have a chat, because it certainly worked for me!

BID Boost to Shrewsbury Businesses In late 2013, the business community of Shrewsbury town centre firmly backed proposals to establish a Business Improvement District (BID) for Shrewsbury, making it the first and only BID in Shropshire.
More than three quarters of businesses voted ‘yes’ for the BID and as a result £1.6 million will be invested to improve the commercial environment for over 500 businesses.
BID Manager Kirsten Henly explains how over the next five years the BID will bring a real change to how the town centre is managed and positively impact those who live and work in Shrewsbury. “This is an exciting time for Shrewsbury. The BID came into operation in April this year and is already playing a role in uniting businesses, local government and private investors with a common vision.
The programme of activity for our first year is ambitious, but fundamentally the additional investment is being directed to priorities identified by the businesses themselves. Over the last few years, many businesses in the town centre have been affected by the challenging economic climate, which is why so many agreed
that the time was right for a BID. Shrewsbury town centre competes with many destinations so there is a real need to work collectively with a united sense of purpose. That is why it is so important to focus on activities, projects and events that can make a positive difference to doing business in Shrewsbury, such as working with the upcoming Shrewsbury Folk Festival and Shrewsbury Fields Forever in August and September, organising parking deals in the town and co-ordinating business support activities.
One of the main purposes of the BID is to champion business issues, provide direction in how the town centre is managed and act as a credible voice at the decision-making table. This means working with the Police, Shropshire Council and Shrewsbury Town Council and holding regular senior level meetings with these organisations on a range of issues that affect or impact businesses in the town centre. We are already working with two local agencies to support the BID’s marketing objectives, which are to position and promote the town both commercially and culturally as a vibrant destination. We have also started work on enhancing the town’s website to ensure it is fully representative of Shrewsbury’s offer.
I strongly believe the BID will make a significant contribution to Shrewsbury town centre and deliver demonstrable change over the coming years. I am looking forward to leading the BID’s activities and being a part of something exciting that sets Shrewsbury apart as an original one-off place to live, work and visit. For more information visit: www.shrewsburybid.co.uk, follow @OriginalShrews on Twitter or find Shrewsbury on Facebook: OriginalShrewsbury.

Postman Pat interviews_Double Page Editorial 15/07/2014 15:29 Page 1
“
Postman Pat: The Movie opened at cinemas nationwide on Friday 23rd May
A MOMENT WITH RONAN
”
n a n Ro g n i t Kea w e
i v r e t In
You wouldn’t necessarily put the image of Ronan Keating, the suave Irish singersongwriter, together with that of our cheery Postman Pat. But the vocalist has lent his talent to the much loved cartoon character when he tries to hold a tune in Postman Pat: The Movie.
With years of experience performing to adoring fans, Ronan Keating has certainly developed himself a stage presence. Having filled huge arenas as part of Boyzone and as a solo artist, Ronan’s latest performance sees him as Pat’s singing voice in Postman Pat: The Movie. With the 3D animation trying his luck auditioning for TV talent show ‘You’re the One’, the pop star found himself crooning in a different sort of recording studio. “I loved it.” Ronan imparts with his characteristic soft spoken charm. “I really enjoyed the whole process. I had to match the way my voice works and my mouth moves and match the words so that was quite an interesting thing. It’s a new world for me and I really enjoyed it.”
It’s clear that Keating was taken in by the filming process, and he got on so well with the directors that they even gave him a cameo. “Originally I wasn’t even in it!” he explains. “I was just the singing voice and then the director worked on putting me in it after we met and spent some time together. So that actually changed halfway
through the whole thing, they added an extra part which is nice.”
With this his third film, the singer is becoming familiar with the acting trade. “It’s been something I’ve been trying to do for what, sixteen years and it has been a slog with a lot of rejection and that’s ok, Because, you know, I’m a singer and it’d be hard for directors to put their faith in me – being a well known singer it’s hard to then be an actor and I understand that. So finding those directors with a belief in me was a breath of fresh air.”
That's not to say the singer hasn't kept himself busy over the past sixteen years. Juggling a successful career as a solo artist and working earnestly with the breast cancer charity he founded, the Marie Keating foundation, it's surprising Ronan's found the time to champion Postman Pat's journey to the big screen from the get go. “To be honest I’m actually surprised it’s taken this long for it to be turned into a feature length film because it was such a legendary, iconic cartoon when we were kids. 30 years later to only now hit our big screens is kind of sad but exciting because my kids don’t really know Postman Pat. Hopefully the film will introduce him to them properly.” That said, getting to the studio has been a journey in itself for Keating. The per-
former is currently based in Australia where he’s a judge on the Australian version of The X Factor. “We’ve seen a lot (of talent competitions) in the UK with the last 15 years with Pop Idol, The X Factor, and you kind of feel that the talent has been exhausted. But in Australia it’s still very fresh.”
Strong words from a man with clear talent spotting skills. As despite spending his days sieving through a plethora of Australian talent, Ronan has picked himself a worthy contender with his Aussie girlfriend. What’s it like dating a girl who grew up halfway across the world? “I guess when you meet someone from another country and have a close relationship you see life differently through them. Which is incredible - the food, the drink, the society, just the way they’ve grown up and stuff they are used to which is so different from the way you’ve been brought up. It’s good to learn about that and blend.”

“
Postman Pat is one of the most iconic television characters and it’s time he is given a chance to show what he can do on the big screen. You’ve got James Bond, you’ve got Jason Bourne: now it’s Pat’s turn!
Steph ” en Mang an In tervi
ew
You may know Stephen Mangan for his role as anaesthesiologist Guy Secretan in Green Wing, or perhaps as the exasperated Sean Lincoln in sitcom Episodes. Now, you’ll have to get used to him in a whole new framework, as the actor is appearing on the big screen as family favourite Postman Pat.
It’s the much loved cartoon character’s first ever feature film, and Mangan is proud to be capturing the thoroughly English postie. “Postman Pat is one of the most iconic television characters and it’s time he is given a chance to show what he can do on the big screen. You’ve got James Bond, you’ve got Jason Bourne: now it’s Pat’s turn.”
Postman Pat: The Movie sees Mangan as Pat, but Ronan Keating captures the postie’s singing voice. Wasn’t Mangan up to the crooning task himself? After all, he was in a band in the nineties… “The main problem is – my voice is actually too good.” He quips. “I mean, Pat’s supposed to have a beautiful singing voice but mine sounds otherworldly, just disturbingly beautiful….”
And whilst Ronan has spent years as a member of Boyzone, Steve prefers a rather different musical style; “I’m more of a folk artist.” He quips. “Give me an aran jumper and some wellies and a stool
and I’m away.”
He may jest about competing with the Irish singer, but Mangan didn’t actually meet the pop sensation until after his shoot – or any of the cast for that matter. Apparently, animation is more of a solo effort. “I did the entire thing on my own in a booth over two days and I actually met the women who played my wife at the premiere.” “That’s the way animation works. Quite often you do your thing in isolation, you perfect your performance, they get what they want from you. It’s a great credit to the director who really is responsible for the whole thing because he’s got all these conversations in his head, the way it’s going to look, they do the animation after you’ve recorded the voice.”
It may afford him less banter with his cast mates, but Mangan divulges that he loves working as a voiceover artist. “I think the voice is fascinating, the fact that you can pick up a phone and hear a voice, and out of all the millions of people on the planet, the thousands and thousands of voices you’ve heard, you know instantly who is talking. That’s incredible. The fact that you can get so much subtlety and nuance is remarkable. The voice is an amazing instrument and I don’t think it’s been bettered by any manmade instrument.”
Mangan isn’t new to stretching his vocal chords for a part. Primarily a stage actor – and a TONY nominated one at that – he refused film and TV roles for five years after finishing drama school, preferring to remain upon the stage. Now, twenty years on, he remains resolute that despite encroaching technology, the human aspect of performance can never be replaced. “With all the animated films we have around, and we have some great, artistic stuff that’s been done – Toy Story, Frozen - what makes them so good is the human performance. You don’t get many silent movies or cartoons anymore, because nuance needs to be provided by human beings … you’ll never get rid of actors however hard you try!”
After graduating from RADA in 1994, the actor’s career trajectory has now leapt from stage to screen to animation, and for that Mangan credits his “itchy brain”. “I get very bored easily, doing the same thing over and over again doesn’t interest me. We’ve got Episodes filming in August so I’m looking forward to series four of that. In the meantime I’ve got radio and a bit of presenting: you mix it up.”
“I’d play Pat again in a heartbeat.”
That’s said …
Interviews from Interviewhub.co.uk
Ken Hom_Double Page Editorial 15/07/2014 14:36 Page 1
THE HYPE
KEN HOM
BRING YOU AN INTERVIEW WITH
WORDS WITH THE CHEF
As the American-Chinese chef, author, TV presenter and humanitarian that has been the face of Asian cuisine for over 30 years, Ken Hom knows what it is like to be healthy, wealthy and successful. But he also knows what it is like to be poverty-stricken and struggling to find enough money to put food on the table, which is why he is fronting a campaign for Laila rice, which aims to give away one million servings of rice to the hungry via UK foodbanks and NGOs in India and Africa.
Born in Tucson, Arizona to Taishanese parents, Ken Hom was raised by his mother who would “earn not much more than $75 a month, if that”. It
meant food had to go far, and as such the celebrity chef has first-hand experience of the pain that a lack of sustenance can cause.
“I am an ambassador for Action against Hunger - not just an ambassador for it but I give a substantial amount of money and gifts and contribution to the legacy of hunger.
It fits right into what I do. And of course, rice is an important part of my life. I love basmati rice and the fact that it can feed so many people. In today’s world it is scandalous that we even have hunger. We waste so much food - over 40% is wasted. That’s ridiculous, don’t you think? That’s another passion: so anything that can

contribute to combating those things I’m against, I am for.”
Another reason Hom is lending his support to the campaign is his disbelief at the current increase in use of food banks in the UK.
“The fact there is hunger in the UK is shocking. It has come to this for a lot of mismanagement on the government side as well as the social side. We live in world where people are worried about buying their next iPhone. We are not aware that not everybody can inspire to those kinds of things. What is important is that people can afford a good meal.” The chef is of the opinion that sustenance should be a main priority. “People talk about diets, yet some
Ken Hom_Double Page Editorial 15/07/2014 14:36 Page 2
people don’t have enough to eat. We have become unconscious of what is going on around us. So if this campaign can bring to attention that over one million people in the UK have been to the food bank in the last 12 months, it will be a very good thing.”
INDONESIAN FRIED RICE
FROM KEN HOM'S SIMPLE ASIAN COOKERY
Displaying a keen interest in British food and culture since 1982, when he started to front the BBC show Ken Hom's Chinese Cookery, Hom has witnessed great change in Britain’s culinary landscape both culturally and socially.
“If you take the UK as an example, being a legacy of the empire it has different cuisines. That is one of the positive aspects of colonialism from what I can see. It has made Britain in many ways a multicultural and a very interesting country. But it is the same for many western countries, like France, where I live. When many people come to a country, with it comes their food. I have seen these changes over 40 years, and it means the quality and the things that you can get are really, really amazing.” Given his expertise and extensive travel, what would he class as his favourite type of food?
“As it was my childhood cuisine, it definitely has to be Chinese food because I grew up eating it. I always end up going back to it because it is comforting and reassuring. It reminds me of being young and it makes me feel happy”.
So if Chinese cuisine will always cast Hom back down memory lane, what does he make of what England has to offer?
“It is not really to my taste, but there are some good aspects. Old fashioned things like steak and kidney pie are nice and hearty, with not much meat. But I think there is too much bread and potato, which I can’t eat too much of.”
“But…” he chuckles, “I do like fish and chips!”
Ken is proud to support Laila's Rice for Life campaign, to donate one million servings of rice to the hungry, launched this month. For further details visit: www.lailafoods.com/riceforlife

HENRY TUDOR HOUSE
A SPECIAL WEDDING VENUE
WITH A BOUTIQUE TOUCH
Henry Tudor House is a unique Shrewsbury wedding reception venue which offers something a little different... It is one of the town’s most historic medieval buildings and has been beautifully restored to its former glory. As well as a thriving bar, restaurant and music venue it also has a large top floor function room with impressive vaulted ceiling which can be booked for wedding receptions, as well as a beautiful private dining room for more intimate after-marriage lunches or dinners. Clare and Graham Jenkins, proprietors of Henry Tudor House, situated just off the Wyle Cop, offer a boutique wedding reception service for couples who want something a little more intimate and individual, with
each event, tailor-made to suit the needs of the bride and groom – rather than just a ‘set package’ of food and drink. They work with couples to develop a reception, so family and guests can enjoy the really special and stylish feel of this historic Grade 1 listed building. It is a unique venue and every wedding held here is as distinctive as Henry Tudor House is.
The top floor at Henry Tudor House can host between 30 and 70 people depending on the seating plan. It has a stage area, superb acoustics and excellent lighting for live music – or even drama – which can be organised with a range of accomplished performers. The kitchen team is led by renowned chef Chris Conde who specialises in creating traditional dishes with a twist and he is happy to discuss requirements with wedding customers. Situated in an ideal town centre location in Barrack’s Passage, the historic half-timbered building was fully restored by Clare and husband Graham, with the interior given a quirky, contemporary feel.
Henry Tudor House provides a comfortable, intimate and welcoming setting – that is unlikely to be found in the more homogenous and larger venues.
The building is one of the oldest medieval buildings in Shrewsbury and is reputed to have got its name when Henry Tudor stayed at the site on his way to victory over Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485.

for her very first one, but after a thorough examination he was happy with the result. Last but not least was Lily, who is 13, she was eager to see how her examination would go. Again she had a very thorough eye test and it turned out that she was a little short sighted and would also need a prescription. They happily picked out the frames that they wanted, there were lots to choose from. Jenna opted for a turquoise colour frame and Lily had seen a pair that she loved before she even went in for the test. They were measured up to get the frames to fit them properly and we had to wait a week for the glasses to arrive. We got the call to say that they had arrived and we popped in to get Jenna and Lily to try them on. They were very pleased with them and I am sure that they will make all the difference at school! I am very pleased that I took the children to get their eyes examined and was a little bit upset with myself that I hadn’t taken them sooner, especially as Jenna must have been struggling with her school work but at least she is all sorted now, I will make sure that I take them for regular check-ups from now on, just like the dentists, eye tests for under 16’s are free too! Eileen Callear
HOW IMPORTANT ARE CHILDREN’S EYE TESTS? Being a parent of 5 children, I am always running here and there, be it the doctors, dentist or school clubs etc but when my youngest daughter Jenna, who is 9 years old, recently came home from school and mentioned that she had struggled at school that day because she couldn’t see what the teacher had written on the board, it dawned on me that I had never taken any of my younger children for an eye test! I called John Biddle Opticians in Madeley, as they were the most local to me and the friendly lady on reception took our details and booked them in for eye tests. We arrived for our appointments and the kids were all quite excited and were busy trying on different frames, to see which suited them best. Jared, who is 11, was first, he sat in the chair a little nervously at first but soon settled in. He had numerous tests carried out from reading the ‘well known’ opticians chart to retina checks. He was made to feel very comfortable whilst having the tests done and it turned out that his vision was excellent. The next to take hot-seat was Jenna, who was very excited, her test took a little longer and it was clear that she was in need of a prescription for glasses. It can be quite a long process to get the exact prescription needed and the optician patiently went through the different lenses to ensure he got it absolutely perfect for her. He was a little bit hesitant, as her vision was really quite bad and the prescription she needed was strong
MADELEY 01952 586267
WELLINGTON 01952 246121
My granddaughter had her first eye test pre-school and was found to be virtually blind in one eye although her eyes looked normal. In her case it couldn`t be improved so spectacles wouldn`t help, but if she had not been taken to the Optician`s this may never have been discovered. She is now 15 years old and it has had an adverse impact on her quality of life and academic achievement. I have never heard of anyone not taking their children to the dentist regularly, even though their teeth seem fine. Is the case for eyes any different? Uncorrected, or poor vision can be a serious impediment to the development and quality of life for children. Unlike the 6 months dental checks, regular eye checks are recommended every 12 months for children even if they require no correction. It doesn`t hurt, and it`s free! So, if a child does not require visual correction why take them every year? Well, for the same health reasons they go to the dentist. Also things can change as children grow, so get them seen annually. Sometimes there is a misconception that children have eye tests at school, so it`s sort of taken care of. To my knowledge this has not been the case for many years and even when it was, it never qualified as an eye exam.

Teaching Basic Digital Photography Teaching basic digital photography. I wish I’d thought of doing this sooner, it’s so much fun! Because this is a subject I’m really passionate about, its easy for me to talk about it and teach people the basics. Photography is a subject I know inside and out. When I first thought of the idea it was a bit daunting as photography is such a large subject. But it was actually a lot easier than it first seemed. After a lot of planning, I finally put together lesson plans, which will take people from knowing nearly nothing, to shooting portraits in manual by the end of day one! The only real problem is not getting carried away and teaching too much! I don’t want to overload everyone with too much information! The feedback from all those that have attended so far has been brilliant, everyone has left the course happy and bursting with a new found understanding of photography. Basing this course on my core skills, as well as the fact that to take great photos, you firstly need to understand how your camera works. Over the 2 days I will teach you how your own camera works, explain aperture, shutter, ISO and how they all work together to create the right exposure. Add that to new skills in composition
and portraiture, you’ll be taking great photos by the end of day one! I like to keep training fun and hands on, so we will be out and about taking photos! But there will still be some theory to get through. So our time will be spent half and half, with a riverside lunch to break things up. Once you’ve taken all these great photos, what do you do with them then? I’ll also be taking you through the basics in Adobes Light Room 5, from getting the photos off your camera to basic editing and archiving. “A fantastic two day photography course covering all of the basics and much much more! Great advice given, knowledge shared and have come
away from the course with a raft of new ideas and a renewed interest in taking great photographs. Cannot rate highly enough and would recommend to anyone wanting to improve their knowledge and skills." - Charlie T “Excellent from the first hello to the goodbye on the last day. I did not want the course to end. Mike is so welcoming, supportive and understanding. Top bloke.” – Jon B “Great mix of theory and practical work. Mike showed enthusiasm throughout and was very concise with explanation. I had no previous knowledge of digital photography but came away with a firm basis on which to build and develop as a photographer.” – Val H
Shrewsbury 6th Form Edit_Double Page Editorial 15/07/2014 15:57 Page 1
Shrewsbury Sixth Form College is dedicated to ensuring that its students are involved in a broad range of educational experiences above and beyond their academic studies, in order to fully prepare them for successful progression to both higher education and employment. This year students have been provided with opportunities to work with individuals and organisations from the private and public sectors, the professions and many thriving and enterprising small businesses.
Wellmeadow Consulting recently selected Stephanie Antrobus for their first university sponsorship package following an assessment centre day with nine students testing their team working skills, mathematical abilities and performance during an interview. Stephanie will receive a £500 grant and a paid internship during holidays from university. Students interested in teaching have had the opportunity to teach and lead classes at Radbrook Primary School. They were also involved in supporting students from Meole Brace, Martin Wilson and Mount Pleasant Primary Schools in SSFC's annual primary school day where Year 5 pupils participated in a range of activities across the curriculum spectrum from Sciences to Product Design, ICT to Psychology and Food Technology and PE. Physics, Electronics and Product Design students
have been working with local firms GKN Land Systems, Ingimex and GKN Aluminium Structures through the Engineering Education Scheme, innovating and seeking solutions to real life engineering problems. Additionally six students, having deferred their university entry for a years paid employment, thereby receiving an invaluable insight to their chosen careers before university, have participated in the 'The Year in Industry' scheme.
Martin Ward, Principal, commented: “As a college in the heart of Shrewsbury, we believe it is vitally important for us to contribute to, and enhance, the life of the local community. This philosophy has been put into practice in a huge variety of ways, and our students have had many opportunities to gain valuable real work and life experiences. “The majority of our students go onto higher education, but the current economic climate means that employability skills are essential whatever route to employment might be taken.’ ‘This is also why we are continually examining our curriculum offer’ adds Paul Morgan, Assistant Principal Curriculum ‘there is something in the news almost
daily about changes in subjects and what is being studied at all levels and as a college we need to respond both to what universities and employers look for in potential students and employees'. 'We're expanding our BTEC offer, redesigning the programme for students who need to resit their Maths and/or English Language GCSE'. The expansion this year of the college onto two campuses named English Bridge Campus and Welsh Bridge Campus has been well received the students, teachers and town centre businesses alike. Subject areas have been able to grow both in student number and facilities; business owners have commented on the increased vitality and footfall around the whole town that has resulted from students moving between the campuses.
We are already looking forward to another successful pre-enrolment course, A Level results day, and then enrolling and supporting an increasing number of new students at the end of August. Many students continue to come from across Shropshire and surrounding areas, because of our extensive range of courses, enrichment activities, and specialist post-16 advisory services. Our travel scheme in association with Arriva trains and buses is an additional bonus for those attending the College and one that we’re delighted to be able to be involved with. We are pleased also that Shropshire Council has responded so positively to the feelings of students and parents alike about the changes in the councils transport provision.”
