e Review

(Reviewed by Luke Smith)

CHURCH FARM COUNTRY HOUSE Tucked away in the historic village of Wrockwardine, beside St. Peters Church you will find Church Farm Country House. This splendid 17th Century Farmhouse offers 5 relaxing bedrooms, spacious gardens and comforting food made with only locally sourced ingredients - including eggs from the resident hens. Privately owned and passionately run, Church Farm Country House offers an ideal base for a long weekend away, stopping off at local attractions or a home-from-home style retreat for business visitors. From the moment you arrive you are made to feel at home. The approach is friendly and relaxed, and the welcome is warm. My Recent visit was to sample the much talked afternoon tea that I had heard so much about and I was really looking forward to it. The grounds are absolutely stunning and the interior of the building offers a homely feeling, making you very comfortable from the off. Sandie welcomed me with open arms and settled me down in the lounge area near to the grand fire place, which brings plenty of character in the room.

Church Farm Country House has loads to offer, from hotel stays and afternoon teas to micro weddings, social events and wakes. It is also available for business meetings too. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit and am very much looking forward to returning again soon.

We chatted a little and then I decided to take a look around the country house, before my Afternoon Tea. There are 5 bedrooms, 4 double rooms and 1 family room which sleep up to 4. The bedrooms are furnished to a high standard and offer a comfortable base to explore the local area. Then it was time for tea, so I made my way into the dining room which also has a lovely cosy fire place, adding character to the room. First of all was a cup of traditional tea with other teas and coffee also available. Next arrived a lovely 3 tier cake stand, stacked with glorious treats and I must say - it looked terrific! With a selection of tasty sandwiches, a couple of freshly made scones and an assortment of cakes, I was in my element. I decided to start with the sandwiches; egg and mayonnaise, cheese and tomato and tuna and sweetcorn – absolute classics. Good fresh ingredients and a nice start to my afternoon.

Church Farm Country House_Double Page Editorial 16/10/2019 11:03 Page 2

Next up was the homemade scones served with jam and cream, they were still warm and melted in my mouth with every bite – with just the perfect texture; light and crumbly. Finally I moved on to the selection of cakes which included an indulgent chocolate éclair with gooey topping and fresh cream oozing out from the light pastry, and a zesty lemon tart with just the right amount of zingy filling and crusty pastry; a real treat. The selection of sandwiches and cakes varies from day to day. Overall it’s a great Afternoon tea, offering lots of variation; it is available every day from 14:00 – 18:00 (Sundays available for large bookings only) at a very reasonable price of just £12 per person. Church Farm Country House has loads to offer, from hotel stays and afternoon teas to micro weddings, social events and wakes. It is also available for business meetings too. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit and am very much looking forward to returning again soon.

Christmas time at

Oswestry Market... There are a number of events on in Oswestry over the coming months. Kicking things off for the festive period is the Christmas Light Switch On, on Thursday 21st November. From 4pm the local schools and musical groups will perform on the large stage, held on the Bailey Head to celebrate the switching on of the Christmas Lights by a special guest.

Following the switch on there will be a Shropshire Produce Market on Saturday 23rd November in the town centre, with handpicked Shropshire based food and craft producers selling the best the County has to offer, and then on 29th November, an Artisan Market with a collection of quality local craft and food producers, held at the Bailey Head - both between 9am and 3pm.

Christmas gets into full swing with Oswestry Christmas Music Live which takes place on Friday 6th December between 5pm and 10pm. One of the largest and spectacular night time events in the county. With huge amusement rides for the thrill seekers, an outdoor ice rink where you can test your skating skills, Christmas stalls which will be the

perfect place to pick up a gift or two, late night shopping is also available across the town. Visit Santa’s Grotto where you can take the kids to meet the ‘big man’ himself and watch their excited faces as they tell him what they want for Christmas this year- if they’ve been good of course! The live music stage provides the entertainment making for a fantastic night out for all the family. Then on Saturday 7th December from 11am we have the Oswestry Christmas Parade. Organised by all the local Rotary groups, this huge event has become one of the highlights of the year, raising thousands of pounds for local charities, including huge floats, walking parades and live music throughout.

Wrapping up the Christmas events there will be a Christmas Artisan Market on Friday 20th December between 9am and 3pm, where you can finish off your shopping with local crafts and foods with a Christmassy feel at Bailey Head.

WINTER FESTIVAL Ellesmere Winter Festival Friday 29th November 2019

E

llesmere has always been an important settlement ever since those clever ancient Britons found that the magnificent glacial Mere was an ideal place for some genuine rest and relaxation. You know the sort of thing – a spot of fishing, gentle boating and gazing at the views and wildlife.

Ellesmere still draws people in today for exactly the same reasons, although there’s much more to do today than simply standing and staring at the Mere, spectacular though it is; For a start there are formal gardens and woodland walks with art and sculpture trails to take in and there’s the motte and bailey of the castle grounds – good place for a picnic and what’s more you can buy all you need to eat from any one of the delicatessens or cafes in the town. The wildlife and Heron Watch has always been synonymous with Ellesmere so you can get back to nature from the comfort of the indoor viewing area.

However it’s hard to imagine that this pretty little market town in the heart of the Shropshire countryside was actually the catalyst for one of the greatest canal networks in the country and subsequent feats of breathtaking engineering that challenged the great Thomas Telford but it’s true. The town even gave its name (very generously) to Ellesmere Port to confirm the fact – more of this later on.

Over the centuries Ellesmere has developed into vibrant market town with numerous Georgian and half-timbered buildings surrounding the medieval streets. Ellesmere’s shops are many and varied, with the type of shops that other towns let go of years ago and not a ‘mall’ in sight.

Ellesmere prides itself on its individual and independent shops – some have been in the same family for generations and you only last that long if you know how to value your customers. There are antiques, crafts and gifts, and many other shops striving to tempt you and fresh local produce from the delicatessen. The weekly market still runs since it was granted its charter in 1221 by Henry the third and occasional antique fairs and craft sales complement the retail scene.

All shopped out? Then there are plenty of cafes, pubs, inns and restaurants when you can sit down and recharge yourself before venturing out again.

Whether it’s a new or older business Ellesmere is full of helpful retailers and staff who actually want to serve you – now how refreshing is that?

14

Ellesmere Winter Festival

Come and join us for a fabulous, festive evening. e people of Ellesmere open their shops for the evening and the streets are full of people enjoying the entertainment. Below is an approximate list of timings for the Festival. More up-to-date details will be released nearer the time. A great evening for all! 4:00pm - Christmas Market and Santas Grotto kick off the event in the Market Hall, Scotland Street. 5.30pm - Santa leaves to feed his reindeer. 6.00pm - e Roads are closed in the centre of town in preparation for the evenings events. Carols begin around the Tree in the town centre, followed by the blessing and lighting of the Tree of Light. 6:30 pm - Santa returns to town on a narrowboat, arriving at e Wharf. 6:45pm - Santa joins the Fizztastical Fizzgigs Lantern Parade and Street Band which meanders its way from e Wharf, through the town and onto the Market Hall where Santa returns to his Grotto to meet more children. This is a great Late Night Shopping event with selected shops saying ‘thank you’ to their customers with food and drink treats.

Prior to the event, Fizzgigs will once again hold their LANTERN WORKSHOPS at the Town Hall.

Further details, including stall bookings, can be found on the Winter Festival Facebook Page.

SENSATIONAL SCALLOPS Scallops with Pickled Cucumber and Gin and Butter Sauce Juicy Scallops are a delicious and easy starter for dinner parties. These delicately flavoured shellfish come in fan shaped shells which can be used to serve the scallops in once they are cooked, which is a pretty way to impress your guests. This recipe takes these rounds of firm white flesh and gives them a fresh, zingy kick - with added gin, which will delight your tastebuds!

Ingredients Scallops with Pickled Cucumber and Gin and Butter Sauce 12 King scallops with the roe removed 1 tsp of salt ½ tsp of pepper 1 cucumber 100ml of î Že English Drinks Company Cucumber Gin 2 lemons 80g butter 2 tbsp of capers 1 tsp of fresh tarragon

Method 1) Before any cooking you need to pickle the cucumber. Peel and deseed the cucumber before carefully cutting into cubes. 2) Place the diced cucumber into a bowl and squeeze over the juice of 2 lemons. 3) Leave the cucumber to stand in only lemon juice for 30 minutes, then add the capers and the Cucumber gin. 4) Place the scallops in a clean J cloth to absorb all the extra moisture on both sides. 5) Drizzle the dry scallops with oil, then salt and pepper. 6) Pre-heat a non-stick frying pan on a medium heat. 7) When the pan is hot place the scallops into the pan one at a time starting at 12 o clock on the clock face, that way you will remember which scallop went into the pan first. 8) Cook the scallops for 90 seconds on each side, then add the butter, tarragon and pickled cucumber. 9) Remove from the heat when the butter is melted and serve.

SAVE THE PLANET 5 Small Everyday Actions You Can Take To Save e Planet

E

ach and every day, we hear news on how the planet is slowly dying and how humans are doing irreversible damage. With these headlines floating around, it’s easy to think that there’s nothing you, a single person, could do about it.

But fact is, there are plenty of little things you can do that will really make a difference! Tom “The Blowfish” Hird, is a Marine Biologist, broadcaster and author. Today he’s telling us 5, simple everyday actions we can all take to help save the planet. With these small steps, you can live a little greener and reduce your carbon footprint – and you’ll hardly notice you’re doing it! 1. Pass on plastics – everything we buy in our daily lives seems to be coated in single use plastic. From coffee cups, to fresh fruit. Cutting these plastics out of your life can make a huge difference. Try packing your own lunch and always carrying a reusable water bottle or coffee cup. 2. Reusable Shopping Bags – these days, most businesses sell inexpensive, reusable shopping bags that help to reduce the amount of plastic and paper that ends up landfill. They might cost a little more than your regular plastic bag, but the benefits are priceless. 3. Adjust your dials – changing your thermostat settings by two degrees will not make a noticeable difference to the room’s temperature, but it will save energy and reduce your home’s consumption rate. Also, be sure to turn off the lights when they’re not in use.

More on the Blowfish... Perhaps best known around the world for the epic adventure show, Filming Impossible (aired on BBC Worldwide), Tom “e Blowfish” Hird is a seasoned Shark expert, Marine Biologist, and wildlife presenter. Tom regularly shares his animal knowledge on shows such as Channel 4’s Sunday Brunch, ITV’s is Morning, BBC e One Show and many more. Tom Is also a published author with his book Blowfish's Oceanopedia: 291 Extraordinary ings You Didn't Know About the Sea. is book packed full of incredible ocean facts has been a number 1 best seller on amazon multiple times, and has been translated for audiences around the world. Toms passion and respect for marine biology was actually born from a child-hood fear of sharks! No wonder, with a catalogue of scaremongering films featuring killers sharks – whether they’re flying around in tornados or swimming to ominous music. But overtime, this fear became a deep fascination with one of nature’s greatest aquatic and aggressively toothy wonders.

4. Waste Less Food – countries in the West tend to throw away an inordinate amount of food, which ends up rotting in landfills and going to waste. Alternatively, you can buy less, donate your leftovers, or even compost them. 5. Turn off the taps – on average, the amount of water used in your bathroom accounts for about 75 percent of the water used in your whole home. To reduce water use, do something as simple as turning off the tap when brushing your teeth. Doing so can save eight gallons of water per day or 240 gallons every month!

LET’S EAT. Pink Gin and Blackcurrant Panna Cotta Winter is a time for indulging a little, or a lot if you feel like it. What better way to induldge than to add a bit of your favourite tipple to your recipes? — Let’s be-GIN! ith all of it’s complex flavour, botanicals and versatility, Gin makes a great cooking companion, and not just to drink while you’re cooking, but as an ingredient! Gin goes great in savoury dishes with pasta, fish and poultry, but it also goes brilliantly in sweet dishes too. It can go into desserts, pretty much anything from mince pies to things like this stunning recipe for Panna Cotta. You could also add it to your preserves like savory pickles or sweet jams for a more robust flavour.

W Method

1) For the panna cotta, soak the gelatine leaves in a little cold water until soft.

2) Place the milk, cream, vanilla pod and seeds and sugar into a pan and bring to a simmer. Remove the vanilla pod and discard.

3) Squeeze the water out of the gelatine leaves, then add to the pan and take off the heat. Stir until the gelatine has dissolved.

4) Divide the mixture among four ramekins and leave to cool.

5) Place into the fridge for at least a couple of hours, until set.

6) While the pan cotta is setting mix together the blackcurrants, redcurrants, The English Drinks Classic Pink Gin and honey to create a light and fruity compote.

Garnish with crumbled shortbread or biscuit.

e Ingredients For the Panna Cotta... 3 gelatine leaves 250ml full-fat milk 250ml of double cream 1 vanilla pod 25g of golden caster sugar 80ml of e English Drinks Company Classic Pink Gin 150g of fresh or frozen blackcurrants 50g of fresh or frozen redcurrants 3-4tbsp honey

To serve 50g of crumbled shortbread or biscuit (for garnish)

You Can Make Your Own Gin...

Making your own gin is as simple as taking vodka and infusing it with juniper berries and other spices and botanicals. There are kits to help you with the process. Too much trouble? You could just leave it to the Pro’s like The English Drinks Company!

SNOOP DOGG ARENA BIRMINGHAM – 16 APRIL 2020 Snoop Dogg has announced a six date ‘I Wanna ank Me’ UK arena headline tour, which includes a date at Arena Birmingham on 16 April 2020.

T

he forthcoming tour sees the West Coast rap legend touring in support of his 17th album I Wanna ank Me, and documentary of the same name, released earlier this year.

I Wanna ank Me celebrates 25 years of the Snoop Dogg, a career that has seen the Doggfather cement his undisputed influence on music with charttopping, multi-platinum records, while also solidifying his importance to wider culture as an actor, businessman and more across the board. e tour reflects this and sees Snoop Dogg enlist a selection of his key collaborators from the breadth of his iconic music career including further West Coast hip hop royalty; Warren G, a Dogg Pound, Obie Trice and D12. ey will also be joined by the multi-million streamed Irish rap duo Versatile. Tickets on sale via www.theticketfactory.com or by calling 0844 33 88 222 *Calls cost 7p per minute plus your phone company's access charge. ABOUT SNOOP DOGG... West Coast rap legend Snoop Dogg has come a long way since being discovered by Dr. Dre in the early 1990. As impressive as he was when guesting on Dre’s e Chronic in 1992, few could have guessed he’d go on to global fame, tens of millions of record sales, and a career in movies and TV. And that’s only part of the story, from battles with the law to reinvention as a reggae artist. He was born Cordozar Calvin Broadus Jr. in Long Beach, California, on October 20, 1971. His "Snoop Dogg" nickname came from his mother because she thought he looked like Snoopy from the Peanuts cartoon. He played piano and sang at his local Baptist church, before starting rap in sixth grade. After

graduating high school, Snoop was arrested several times for drug possession and spent time in prison. He was also associated with the Rollin’ 20 Crips Gang. He started making music as a way out of his troubles and recorded early demos with his cousin Nate Dogg and friend Warren G as 213. A track on one of these came to the attention of Dr. Dre who invited Snoop — then rapping under the name Snoop Doggy Dogg — to audition. From there they collaborated on a song called "Deep Cover" for the soundtrack of the film for the same name; and Snoop became the key rapper on Dre’s hugely successful first solo album, e Chronic, in 1992. Snoop's first album, the Dre-produced Doggystyle (1993), climbed its way to the No. 1 spot on Billboard's hip-hop and Top 200 charts, based in part on the success of the singles "Who Am I (What's My Name)?" and "Gin and Juice." Outside of music, Snoop has made investments in the burgeoning cannabis business. In November 2015 he launched Leafs By Snoop, becoming the first A-list celebrity to brand a line of cannabis products. at same year he also launched a new digital-media venture called Merry Jane, which focuses on the latest marijuana news. In May 2017 Snoop dropped his fifteenth studio album Neva Left. He also released a gospel album titled Bible of Love in March 2018. He is held in high esteem and affection by hip-hop fans worldwide, and is one of the most recognizable faces and voices of the whole genre, even to those who don’t listen to his music. He has the distinction for having the most Grammy nominations of any music artist— 17 to date — without having won one. But as Snoop Dogg shows few signs of retiring, don’t write him off just yet.

FUN WITH FABRICS...

From checks to florals, argyle knits to all out sparkle, massively oversized bags to equally oversized hats, we are looking at a seriously sassy fashion season - Bring on the winter wardrobe. I do love checks - like the jacket from Next (right) but this season will see different checks being mixed together. The Argyle sweater is officially back. No longer just for the middle-age golfer, the argyle knit will team up nicely with a fitted skirt or smart trousers for the perfect work outfit. Corduroy has been making a bit of a comeback over the last few months or so, but soon enough it will have truly reached the masses. I love this cream M&S Collection Jacket £79 (main image right), but corduroy will be everywhere.

PARTY SEASON...

Party season always brings a bit of sparkle into our lives. This year’s sparkles are more interesting than they normally are with more draped dresses and sequin fringing. Waist belts will be making a comeback, with just about everything from jumpers and jackets to dresses and coats (and just about everything else too!).

4 Fresh and Stylish Guest Bedroom Ideas ... Whether there’s always a guest over, or it’s typically used for something other than sleeping, revamping a guest bedroom is always fun. Rebecca Snowden, Interior Style Advisor at Furniture Choice, shares 4 easy tips to update an extra room for maximum enjoyment.

38

Guest Bedrooms

Page 46 & 47 - Home Edit - no page no_Double Page Editorial 15/10/2019 13:11 Page 2

Stay Home... 1. Store smartly A guest bedroom provides great additional storage space for out-of-season clothes and bedding. “The goal is to disguise or store so cleverly that it wouldn’t be a bother even when you have visitors over,” says Rebecca. “Using an ottoman bed is one of the best ways to do this without taking up any extra floor space in the room.”

How to achieve this: • Use ottoman beds with plenty of storage space. • Create a window seat with storage space - it’s also a cosy reading nook. • Vacuum pack bulkier items like bedding and winter wear.

2. Pay homage to your favourite characters “Decorating a bedroom as homage to a character can be as full-on or pared back as you like. Start with the walls paint or wallpaper them in the main colour of the theme,” advises Rebecca. Decorating the rest of the room is easy enough for fans with merchandise to display. “Then, style the space with relevant memorabilia and artwork to really make the theme shine,” she says. “Decor that is stylish yet practical is my favourite kind. Pillows, clocks, and lamps are some examples,” says Rebecca. “It can be as simple as choosing a red alarm clock and blue bedspread for a Captain America themed bedroom - just have fun.”

3. Embrace some zen Bedrooms should be a place of peace, and a spare guest bedroom is no different. “In the business of our lives, it’s really important to have a quiet place where you can just go to chill and recharge.” Turn a guest bedroom into a zen space perfect for practising yoga or meditation. “Let in plenty of natural light and paint the room a calm neutral

Got Guests is Christmas? How to create a stylish guest bedroom...

like grey, ivory or taupe. You’ll definitely feel the zen vibes start to flow in there,” says Rebecca. “Add finishing touches like a large mirror, plants and candles to bring in a sense of life and cosiness.”

4. Make it multifunctional A spare room can multifunction as a space to showcase hobbies while also providing for overnight guests comfortably. “A guest bedroom is completely customisable to suit your personality and needs, so have fun while creating a practical and stylish space,” advises Rebecca.

How to achieve this: • Determine how the room will be used. Put up a lovely filled bookcase for a bedroom and library. • Slip in hobby pieces like musical instruments into the decor and theme of the room. • Choose furniture that serves more than one purpose like sofa beds and ottoman stools. • Incorporate clear visual dividers to show the different functional areas of the room. This can be done by strategically placing carpets, cabinets or decorative room dividers. W

hen we act from a place that feels deeply aligned with our core values, we move through life with greater purpose and contentment, making a positive impact on the world and those around us.

Author Jo ChunYan discovered this for herself during the final year of a chemical engineering and science degree, when a strong pull to study design set her in a direction she couldn’t ignore. Choosing to fully explore these “nudges” led her to move across the world, kick start her own successful graphic design business and become a trained intuition coach. In The Intuition Journal she shares a range of prompts for selfinquiry in a daily practice tool that you can start at any time in the year. Practical by design, readers are called upon to explore a Daily Intuition Ritual, set their Intention and commit to an Intuitive Action for the Week. The opposing interdependent forces of Yin and Yang energy are woven throughout to create a sense of balance and flow and are used as grounding principles for the seasons and exercises: Structure and discipline (Yang) has been created to hold space for intuition (Yin) to flow.

This consciously designed guide is perfect for anyone seeking increased clarity, growth and flow in their life, and for those excited to begin or deepen their spiritual journey.

Daily intuition practice is considered to be an integral skill for creativity, relationships, communication, problem-solving and leadership. Benefits include: • Self-trust and authentic decision-making • Self-acceptance and the shedding of old habits and limiting beliefs • Deepened intuitive skills and heightened creativity • Learning to balance strength and work with your energy

Our challenge had influencers such as Love Island’s Laura Anderson uploading their pups chowing down on their favourite food and challenging their dog owner friends such as winner Jack Finchman and former contestants, Olivia Buckland and Adam Collard to do the same – so that a healthy meal could be provided to a shelter dog in the UK. #BuyFoodGiveFood Now Paws.com are back, this time with some expert advice on how to settle your brand-new beloved rescue dog into their new forever home. BE REALISTIC IN YOUR EXPECTATIONS Moving into your home is likely to be daunting for your new dog. How long it takes your new friend to come out of their shell and feel at home will depend on a variety of factors – such as their age, level of previous house experience and whether they have been fostered or in kennels. Some dogs may feel comfortable in hours, while it may take others days or weeks. Give your dog time. GIVE THEM SPACE In the first few days, avoid having visitors where possible and allow your new dog to choose their own level of interaction with you. Provide them a safe space, such as a bed or crate, where they can retreat for privacy. Teach children from the beginning that these areas are off-limits.

Paws.com's Expert Tips for Settling a Rescue Dog into your Home In-house vet and pet wellbeing ambassador for Pets.com Dr Stephanie Wenban, BVSc, MRCVS, said, “... deciding to re-home a dog instead of getting a puppy can be incredibly fulfilling, as well as exciting! Settling a rescue dog into their new home requires some different considerations compared to welcoming a puppy…” Paws is a pet wellbeing company and champion of honest dog food. It helps pet parents care for their dog like a pro with vet-approved and personalised food recommendations, expert advice and a meal donated to a shelter dog with every order. Over 100,000 healthy meals have been donated to dogs in need so far.

KEEP THINGS CONSISTENT Your new dog is going through a period of change, so try to provide as much stability as possible during this time. Continue on the same food for at least the first week and establish a daily routine of feeding and bedtime. Avoid leaving them alone straightaway, as this can trigger separation anxiety; instead, begin to slowly build up their amount of solo time over the coming weeks. BUILD THEIR TRUST Establish a bond with your new friend by spending time with them – such as training classes, teaching them commands or playing with them. These activities create opportunities for you to communicate with and reward your dog, and in turn for them to view you as a safe and positive person. CONSIDER OTHER PETS If you have other pets at home, delay introductions for the first 24 hours to let your new dog find their feet. When starting intros, keep meetings controlled, making sure dogs

are on a lead and cats have an exit route. It can help to have the initial meeting on neutral territory, such as at the park, with an extra pair of hands to help. Head over to Paws.com for more information on their shelter network, plus handy tips on how you can get involved and show your support – from the Chow Down Challenge to subscription orders, or even becoming an official Buy Food Give Food ambassador.

SUBARU FORESTER: THINKING BEYOND THE BOXER Subaru has electrified its traditional boxer engine, with a new e-BOXER mild-hybrid for the Forester and XV. ey are deeply appealing cars. A mild-hybrid set-up harvests kinetic energy that would otherwise be lost by turning it into electricity and sending it to a battery - installed under the boot floor in Subaru's case- from where it can be used to take the load off the petrol engine under certain circumstances.

These include setting off from a standstill, or maybe a little boost of power when accelerating hard. Treat the throttle gently, and the e-BOXER can glide up to around 25mph using electric power alone, though the small capacity battery - typical of all mild-hybrids - means you won't go very far before the petrol engine kicks in.

The sub-plot to all this is that the diesel boxer engine is now defunct; electrification is where it's at now for Subaru. Few other cars feel as immediately durable and fit for purpose as a Subaru. The Forester and XV each feel like a four-wheeled Swiss army knife, ready for anything the world - or your family - can throw at them.

The new models use Subaru's latest super-stiff platform, and you can sense the rigidity in how the XV and Forester eagerly changed direction and dived round hairpin bends.

The e-BOXER mild-hybrid system is impressive as much for how unobtrusive it is as for the efficiency improvements it delivers over the old engines. The interiors of these new models are also more pleasant than previous Subarus - a slick, easy-to-use touchscreen, clear instruments, lots of soft-touch plastics and super-comfortable seats mean this is a big step up. There are many of the thoughtful, practical touches that make a Subaru so useful. Big, square back doors mean loading children into a child seat is easy; the wide, flat door sills are designed to double

44

as steps when you are securing bikes and boats to the roof bars, which are themselves cleverly designed with lashing points. And so it goes on...

Other observations? The CVT gearbox is definitely one of the best of the breed, though lean too hard on the throttle and you can't escape the soaring engine revs characteristic of all these transmissions. They are swifter than their on-paper figures suggest, too - a sensation aided by just how effectively these cars can maintain momentum.

The e-BOXER system is impressive as much for how unobtrusive it is as for the efficiency improvements it delivers over the old engines.

A Subaru isn't something you choose merely because of the impression it makes on a spreadsheet, however; its appeal is far deeper and more enduring than that. That's why Subaru owners tend to keep their cars for such a long time. There's an indefatigable, bomb-proof feeling to how these cars drive, which is deeply appealing and needs to be experienced to be appreciated.

No wonder Subaru has 'confidence in motion' - few other cars, at any price, are shot through with as such integrity. AT A GLANCE Subaru Forester e-BOXER XE Price: £33,995 Engine and transmission: 2.0-litre four-cylinder 'boxer' petrol with mild-hybrid system, all-wheel-drive, continuously variable transmission; 148bhp, 145lb.ft Performance: Top speed 117mph, 0-62mph in 11.8 seconds Fuel consumption and CO2: 34.7mpg (WLTP combined), 154g/km Car tax: £530 in first year, then £145 annually Benefit in kind: 34 per cent Euro NCAP safety rating: Not yet tested

Why Electric Heating Should Be Something To Consider is Winter. North West Heating Solutions Talk about the importance of well specified electric heating.

For More information about Electric Heating contact North West Heating Solutions and speak to Emily Or Sam. 01244 371445.

Our ELKAtherm electric heating have long been a popular replacement for old night storage heating and ineffective panel heaters, giving our customers comfortable and controllable warmth in their homes. In recent years we have started to see a shift in our business as the national grid becomes greener more and more people look towards renewable energy. We have seen a significant increase in people with Gas and Oil look for electric alternatives as a viable way to heat their homes. With this shift, the electric heating market has rapidly expanded with an array of products it can be confusing for the consumer.

Just like a car, often the way you use your heating system can make a big difference to its efficiencies and running cost which is why it is very important to ensure your electric heating system is correctly specified. There are lots of factors that impact the heating required in a room more than just the size of the room. Electric heating is different to the traditional Gas systems we see in this country, it offers some great benefits like no servicing costs or maintenance. The modular nature of electric heating allows you to control each and every part of your home maximising efficiency you can achieve from the system.

Things like radiator position, building glazing and insulation room usage and personal comfort levels all effect what heating should be installed.

UNDER PRESSURE Politeness and "peer pressure" make Brits drink more

A

third (35%) of British drinkers drink more than they intended because they were encouraged by others, reveals a new study by independent alcohol education charity, Drinkaware.

More than one in three (37%) UK adults who drink report drinking more alcohol than they set out to because they were in a round, and a third (34%) drink more because they did not want to be impolite and refuse a drink. Overall, Drinkaware’s annual monitor of more than 2,000 UK adults found that a majority of Brits who drink (57%) say they would like there to be less pressure to drink alcohol. Slightly over a third of drinkers (35%) say that pressure to drink alcohol is common in their age group (rising to 60% of those aged 18-34). Some people employ avoidance tactics; over a third polled (37%) admit to having nursed their drink to avoid pressure to have another, while one in ten (11%) admit to actively seeking friends who drink little or no alcohol. Almost a third of research respondents (29%) drink more because they want to keep up with others. Friends are the chief influential figures that are most likely to encourage drinkers to have more with 60% of people polled saying their friends have pressured them to drink more than they intended.Among working adults (who drink), two-fifths (43%) agree that there is too much pressure to drink when socialising with work colleagues. One in five reported their co-workers have pressured them to drink more than they’d set out to. Men in particular are more likely than women to have experienced pressure to drink from their boss or superior (13% compared with 8%). Drinkaware’s research also reveals that a significant proportion of British adults are contributing to a culture of pressure; one in five (21%) adults who drink admitted to having encouraged someone to drink more alcohol after they said they didn’t want to. A similar number had given someone an alcoholic drink or topped up their glass without asking first (19%). Drinkaware’s Chief Executive, Elaine Hindal, says: “Our research lifts the lid on a culture of peer pressure in this country. It speaks volumes that over half the adult population say they would like there to be less pressure to drink. “And it seems from our new research that being polite, not wanting to confront a situation and feeling the need to keep up could be preventing many of us from standing up to that pressure.” While the number of people who drink has decreased yearon-year (81% of UK adults compared with 84% in 2018), the results show pressure to drink could be impacting the

drinking patterns of ‘risky drinkers’ (those at most risk of health harms because of their drinking levels). Almost half (46%) reported drinking more than they’d intended because they were encouraged by others, compared with a UK average of just over a third (35%) and 14% reporting that this happens regularly (monthly or more often). This is true of only four percent of low risk drinkers. Similarly, almost one in ten ‘risky drinkers’ (eight percent) admit to regularly encouraging others to drink after they’ve said they don’t want to. This is compared with only one percent of low risk drinkers. Elaine adds: “Pressure to drink in the majority of cases isn’t malicious, it may not even be conscious. Most people just want the people they’re with to have a good time. But regularly drinking alcohol above recommended levels can significantly increase your risk of developing a range of diseases. “It’s crucial that people are aware of the health harms of drinking more than the low risk drinking guidelines. Being armed with the facts could make people feel more confident in resisting pressure, as well as making many of us think twice about topping up a friend’s glass.” Drinkaware advises staying in control of your drinking by interspersing alcoholic drinks with water or soft drinks, eating food whilst drinking and avoiding buying or drinking in rounds. When drinking, keep track and stay within the Chief Medical Officers’ low risk drinking guidelines, which recommend drinking not more than 14 units of alcohol per week, spread over three or more days. Drinkaware also recommends taking at least three drink free days every week. For more information visit drinkaware.co.uk.

GUILTY PLEASURES Brits Spend Over ree Times What ey Can Afford To...

B

RITS ARE struggling to save for the future due to overspending on guilty pleasures, including holiday travel, owning a car and making home improvements.

A survey of 1,000 UK adults by a leading personal insolvency practice, Creditfix.co.uk, published in The UK Spending Report, has lifted the lid on the UK’s overspending, revealing that each month adults spend £722.60 more than the average person’s disposable income allowance.

According to the data, the average UK adult spends £1,093.90 each month on treats and non-essential items, despite only having £371.30 in disposable income.

The most expensive temptation has been revealed as holiday travel with Brits typically spending £168.86 on this each month. In second place was owning and running a car which sets adults back £143.65 each month, followed by home improvements at a monthly cost of £84.66.

Gadgets and tech came fourth on the list of biggest guilty spending pleasures at a cost of £78.98 per month. Completing the top five was attending events such as music concerts, theatre or sporting events, as Brits typically spend £75.73 on this per month.

When quizzed on the reason why they spend, almost a third (29%) say they love buying gifts for friends and family while 1 in 10 say they treat themselves to new things because they want to be stylish.16% of those surveyed admit they can be wreckless with money at times but 1 in 5 believe it’s important to treat yourself to nice things.

Taylor Flynn, head of marketing at Creditfix, comments: “A worrying number of Brits are massively overspending on nonessential items, looking for that immediate gratification rather than saving for the future. Whilst it’s definitely healthy to treat yourself to nice things once in a while, spending on treats and luxuries does need to be moderated to avoid nasty financial surprises at the end of the month.

Guilty pleasure spending costs Brits £866billion each year... • Brits spend £1,093.90 on treats for themselves each month despite only having £371.30 of disposable income • e most expensive purchases include holiday travel, running a car and home improvements • 16% admit to being wreckless with money at times

Top 10 Monthly Guilty Pleasure Expenses 1. Holiday travel - £169

8. Hobbies (music lessons, gym, sports clubs, etc) - £70 9. Drinks and nights out - £68 10. Clothes and shoes - £65

“The fact that the average British adult is spending £722.60 more than their disposable income budget each month is a big cause for concern and suggests more needs to be done to curb overspending and educate the public on the dangers or overindulgence.”

MENTAL HEALTH ousands of Brits now hooked on prescription drugs...

F

ollowing the Public Health England review which found that thousands of Brits are hooked on antidepressants and painkillers, the conversation around depression and the available treatments is one that is a garnering more and more attention.

Serving as a crippling reminder of the UK’s mental health strain, it has been reported that anti-depressant prescriptions have nearly doubled in a decade with 70.9 million being prescribed last year. But the real issue is that a large proportion of the patients who receive these prescriptions are unable to disengage from their medications, once their prescribed course is complete. Given the startling levels of addiction now seen up and down the UK as a result of prescription medication, we now need to ask whether the current mainstream treatments are working. Smart TMS, a specialist in mental health treatment for a number of conditions, has conducted exclusive research on a range of themes around the treatment of mental health in the UK. Not only are thousands becoming addicted to their prescribed medication, but Smart TMS' research uncovers that many people are choosing to suffer through the crippling effects of mental health issues in order to avoid taking antidepressants and other prescription drugs due to their reported side effects and high addiction rates. The exclusive research surveyed over 2000 Brits and found the following: • 25% (11.4 million Brits) say they have suffered from undiagnosed depression for many years

Over 6 million Brits suffering with a long term mental illness going UNTREATED to AVOID prescription drugs... • Record number of antidepressants prescribed last year in the UK at 71 million • 7 million Brits have taken prescription depression medication and the side effects have dissuaded them from using them again • A QUARTER of Brits want alternative treatments for depression Depression treatment specialists, Smart TMS, provide commentary on the need to change how we approach treatment of mental health and the dangers of prescription drugs.

• 25% (11.4 million Brits) want their GP to prescribe an alternative treatment to prescription drugs for their depression • 14% (6.7 million Brits) have left a long-term mental health issue untreated over many years in order to avoid prescription drugs • 10% (4.2 million Brits) would pay over £2,000 to receive an innovative treatment for their mental health issue • 15% (7.3 million Brits) of those who have used antidepressants say that they don't work • 14% (7 million Brits) have taken prescription medication for depression before and the side effects alone (e.g. insomnia, drowsiness) have dissuaded them from using them again • 12% (5.7 million Brits) had to stop using antidepressants because they found them ineffective or they had negative side effects

58

Health Matters

• 6% (3.2 million Brits) think that prescribed antidepressants have stopped them from doing their job properly or stopped them from working all together.

LASER HAIR REMOVAL

w Laser Hair Removal

Humans have had a problem with hair for thousands of years. Plucking, waxing and needle epilation are all temporary and needle epilation is only capable of treating one hair at a time.

Excess hair may be the result of medical conditions, but the pressure to remove it may be cosmetic. Cultural norms and Helen & Rachel peer group pressure often require the removal of hair in certain regions such as the face, axillae (armpits), legs and bikini line for women, and the chest and back for men. Our Laser hair removal treatment is 10 times faster than standard IPL. It is clinically-proven, safe and effective, giving long-term removal of unwanted hair and is effective on all skin types. Treatments start at just £30. Offer! Buy 5 sessions and get the 6th session free.

w eDS Dermastamp

eDS DERMASTAMP

The multi-award winning eDS dermastamp microneedling treatment is a firm favourite of ours. Using medical grade, German engineered microneedles, the device produces thousands of microneedle columns in the skin, which in turn stimulates the skin to naturally regenerate and repair itself. This treatment is idea for the treatment of fine lines around the delicate eye area and results are not only smoother, brighter rejuvenated skin, but it can also lead to an improvement in the appearance of acne scars and stretch marks. Single treatments start at just £120.

w Sun protection and SPF

We often think of protecting our skin from UVB when its sunny, but damaging UVA, infrared-A and visible light radiation is present everyday, all year round. They penetrate the cloud and even glass. High energy visible light (HEV) from our mobile phones and computer screens are also contributing to premature skin ageing. Therefore it is really important not to neglect your skin when it comes to protecting it. We recommend wearing a factor 50 SPF everyday throughout the autumn and winter months, such as Heliocare 360° which is proven to protect the skin from UVA, UVA and Infrared-A. Park Street Clinic are official stockists of Heliocare and Heliocare 360°.

The Basics

Model:Mercedes CLS 400 d 4MATIC AMG Line Coupe. Price: £61,215 Engine:3.0 Diesel 340bhp Pictures: Mercedes Benz UK

We all know that e Count of Monte Cristo hankered after his lost love, Mercedes. I can tell you dear reader that now I know just how he felt. But there's a difference. e Mercedes I yearn for is actually available: if indeed at a price even I - ensconced in the luxury of my chateau - might struggle to afford. But then I could sell the chateau and buy the car for £61,215. And guess what? I'd live happily ever after. For the car in question- the new Mercedes CLS Coupe- comes fully equipped with everything a modern count or countess could conceivably need. With the added bonus that, initial outlay aside, you won't have to 'count' the pennies at the fuel pump. Nor will you need an expensive retinue of servants to do your bidding for it serves your every need and more with an attention to detail that beggars belief.

During my only too brief time with the CLS I was aware of the envious eyes of the world trained on this car. And it's easy to see why. Did ever a car declare its intent so boldly to awaken the planet from it's dogmatic slumbers? Can you look like a million quid and not be vulgar? Yes you can if you happen to be called Mercedes Benz CLS Coupe. It's as though somewhere in the mountain mists where lies the as yet undiscovered Refinery of Refinement, something is stirring. And that something is glinting with purpose like a long-lost repository of precious metals. Or to put it another way, picture a plush-lined casket of jewel-studded silver designed to accommodate the dreams of every highway wayfarer. This is the sort of quality we're talking about. No wonder the CLS Coupe is a magnet for all eyes.

Lightly breakfasted and dressed in my best Monte Cristo opera cloak, I plucked my perfectly legal facsimile swordstick off the umbrella stand, flung open the chateau door and was greeted by a golden morning. A perfect day for a perfect outing. There was the car. I paused to look. I say that to disguise the fact that in truth I was pausing for breath. For the very appearance of the CLS takes the breath away. The classic low lines, long bonnet and fastback rear of traditional coupe styling are in evidence as you would expect - but here, accentuated in the modern idiom, the better to suggest the sort of armoured invulnerability so necessary for security on modern roads. That legendary three-pointed star is presented to the world in an up front assertion of uncompromising self belief. There's no argument about this car. It is what it is. And it looks, of course, glorious.

Mercedes CLS 400 d Modern technology and the miracles it can weave abounds to such an extent that I must leave it to the experts to explicate. The roll call includes all that you would expect of infotainment, display, driver aids and comfort and safety equipment systems. The old adage "Too much is just right" is applicable here. But without any suggestion of the old! Never came newness in such an exciting package. The CLS must be relished for the sheer luxury embodied in a potent pedigree pushed to the acme of evolution. The interior embodies top levels of luxury. But that's not quite enough for sir or madam. You also get ergonomic efficiency and a level of cosseting with the optional 'comfort package' that more than borders on the therapeutic. It's a package that allows a specific 'wellness' set up tailored to your moods and needs via management of general climate and delightful scenting and purification of the air you breathe. Never before has a cabin radiated to such good effect the sense of 'being the place to be'. For the benefit of the "Wot'll it do mister?" brigade it's worth

pointing out that it manifests what they call in technical jargon 'serious performance'. You might say - in purplish vein- that the CLS represents a Mercedes manifesto of sculpted muscle, supplying tension-free dynamism for life's lucky winners. Properly to put into words the qualities of this machine you would need a Wordsworth under the spell of a magic Wandsworth, floating on a lonely cloud of translucent algorithms.

Three key points to establish: the first point to declare is that the CLS boasts a brand new engine: possibly the very best of its kind in the world. A clean, powerful and refined straight six 3.0 diesel gives all the economy you would expect of a milemunching grand machine. Second, the power that it puts out is unlike the crude heavyweight punch of the point and squirt sort. This is the effortless power you only get from an emperor of dynastic entitlement. Not that it doesn't pack a hefty punch with 340bhp behind the smooth smile. But brute force is not what you get. Ample sufficiency and then some more, but never less than sublimely

4MATIC AMG Line Coupe. served up with a velvet glove driving through a seamless 9 speed G-Tronic automatic gearbox. The swiftness of the CLS which will, if you are so inclined, sweep you up to a benchmark 60mph in under five seconds and on to a sensibly limited 155mph, means that on busy motorways you are never in danger of being boxed in. This makes for a wonderfully relaxed feeling at the wheel. The third point to establish is that the smile on your face put there by the cars refined alacrity will stay in place at the fuel pump. You can look forward to a shade under 50mpg on a long journey. This is a remarkable figure. If the engine is the heart of the car and the external appearance the apparel of the grand touring gentle person of means, then the interior is most certainly the stateroom of success. No-one hurries to get out. Rather one hurries to get in and get going.

So it was that morning. After dwelling on the appearance of the CLS for an inordinate amount of time it was eventually necessary to take to the road. At once a white van stopped to wave me

along at a junction. This was not because my debonair features had fooled him into thinking David Niven was behind the wheel but rather because that threepointed star signified to him as well as the rest of the world that here was a coupe deserving of respect. Peerless poise and patrician pulchritude automatically invite deference mixed with aspirational envy. As one might put it: deserving a bow with no scrapes. Just another reason why the Mercedes CLS is the car for the Monte Cristo in us all.

MINCE PIES WITH GIN IN! Lime Gin and Cranberry Mince pies (Makes approximately 12 mince pies)

I have the fondest memories of crumbly mince pies at Christmas. My Nan would bake piles of them which she packed into her special tins, which were whisked out for visitors that popped in for a sherry over the festive period. Still to this day Nan’s mince pies are they best I have ever had. This recipe is a new twist on the traditional mince pie with Cranberries and Lime Gin from The English Drinks Company. Oh my - what would Nan say?

Ingredients For the pastry 170g plain flour 100g cold unsalted butter, cut into chunks 1 tbsp golden caster sugar 1 large free-range egg yolk 1 clementine, zested 1 lemon, zested ½ tsp ground ginger 1 tbsp milk For the filling 250g mincemeat 100g dried cranberries 100ml e English Drinks Company Lime Tree Gin

Method 1) Soak the cranberries in e English Drinks Company Lime Tree Gin overnight for the best flavor. Pre-heat oven to 180°C. 2) Add the plain flour and cold butter to a bowl, rub together until you create breadcrumbs. To the mixing bowl add the zest of both the lemon the clementine. Also add the golden caster sugar and ground ginger. Mix together. Add the egg yolk and milk to bind the mixture together. You should have a smooth dough- don’t mix together any further as your pastry will become too tough. Cover with a tea towel and rest in the fridge for an hour or overnight. On a floured surface roll out the pastry to 5mm thick and cut out circles of pastry to fit the shape of a mince pie tin. e pastry should come to the top of the tin mould. 3) Place the mincemeat in a bowl and add the blueberries soaked in e English Drinks Company Lime Tree Gin. Mix together. Add the filling to the pastry cases in the tin. Fill approximately half of each pastry case so the mixture does not spill over. Brush the rim of the mince pies with a beaten egg. If you want to add a lid, roll the pastry to 5mm thick and cut out a circle to fit the mince pie. Score the lids to let steam out while cooking to help ensure a crisp pastry. 4) Bush the lid with egg wash and sprinkle a golden caster sugar on top.Bake for 20 minutes until the pastry is golden brown.

Star Signs - When to Move in Together_Double Page Editorial 17/09/2019 13:40 Page 1

TIME TO MOVE IN? When to move in together based on your zodiac sign

M

oving in together is a huge step for most couples, but while some can spend years making that decision, others will be unpacking their bags in their partner’s home after a few months.

The housing agents at Sellhousefast.uk had a look at the personality traits of each zodiac sign and revealed after how long they should be moving in with their partners, and also what kind of property would suit their personalities most. Sellhousefast.uk looked at what each zodiac sign likes and dislikes, along with other personality traits to make up the ideal time for them to move in together with their partners and the types of housing they prefer. In a couple of two difference signs, the most dominant partner will probably end up getting their way, especially when it comes to the type of property they will live in. When it comes to how long it takes to move in together, the best way to interpret the numbers is by calculating the average for both zodiac signs. AQUARIUS – 3 YEARS – FLAT People under the Aquarius star sign are independent and don’t like labels, so they won’t settle down after only a few months. They are very analytical so they will measure the pros and cons of living together before taking such a big step. Three years is usually the ideal time for an Aquarius to move in with a significant other, as that will give them plenty of time to know if they are making the right decision. They value connections with other people more than anything material, so a flat will be just enough for them to feel comfortable without going over the top. PISCES – 2 YEARS – TERRACED HOUSE Pisces is a deeply intuitive sign, so you would think they would know straight away if they are with the right person. However, their logical sides are also very evolved, so they will not rush into a decision just because their gut feeling says it’s right. You can expect a Pisces to ask you to move in with them after approximately 2 years. A Pisces will love a terraced house because he loves being surrounded by people, and that type of property will offer him or her just that! ARIES - 3.5 YEARS – DETACHED HOUSE Just like Aquarius, Aries are known to be very independent people. They are overly blunt and that can sometimes cause issues in their relationships with others. It might take them up to three and a half years to feel ready to move in together with someone and give away some of that independence they cherish so much. Because of their independent nature, a detached house would be ideal for them. While loyal to his/her friends, the Aquarius cherishes their time away from people. TAURUS – 3 MONTHS – COTTAGE People under the Taurus sign like stability and are the anchors of the zodiac signs. So perhaps it is no surprise that they would move in with their partners after just 3 months. As long as their partners are honest and don’t lose their trust, the relationship should work. They are very hardworking and like to stay grounded. A cottage is what it takes to satisfy their needs when it comes to a home.

Love Matters

GEMINI – 1 YEAR – SEMI-DETACHED HOUSE ‘In love with love’ is one way to describe a Gemini. However, they won’t dive head first into a huge commitment like sharing a house. They are highly intelligent, and they will wait until they find the right person to take things forward with. When they think they have found the one, it will take approximately one year to move in together with them. They are great friends, but they also cherish their alone time, and a semidetached house describes their personalities perfectly! CANCER – 6 MONTHS – BUNGALOW Cancers have a great intuition and they will know immediately when a person is right for them. They thrive in a relationship and, if things go well, why wait? A cancer would move in with their partner within the first 6 months if they could. They are very family-orientated and are a grounded sign. They prefer cosy over glamorous, so a bungalow is perfect for them. LEO – 1.5 YEARS – FLAT Leos are very passionate and always put their partners’ needs first. They don’t like everybody, but if a Leo chooses you as a partner, you’ll know they are truly fond of you. They love grand gestures and to be shown attention. One year and a half is enough for them to take this next step. They like the city life and modern architecture, so they would probably prefer living in a flat. VIRGO - 2.5 YEARS – 2-LEVEL FLAT Virgos are very hardworking and are often perfectionists. They will not stop until something is done right. That’s why it will take a while for them to let another person into their private space if they’re not sure whether they will ruin what they’ve worked for. Two and a half years is about the time a Virgo needs before trusting someone to live with them. They are extravagant and like grandeur when it comes to their surroundings, so ideally, a 2-level flat is what would satisfy their need for living big. LIBRA – 8 MONTHS – STUDIO FLAT Libras think they are quite good at directing their own lives, so if they see themselves with you in the long run, it won’t take them long to ask you to move in together, more precisely around 8 months. Libras are attracted to intelligence rather than appearance, so when this translates to housing, they would be more than happy just with a studio flat, as long as it’s packed with books. SCORPIO – 2 MONTHS – MANSION While a bit intimidating, Scorpios know what they want, and they want it now! If you manged to penetrate their thick shells, you’ll discover a loving and loyal person. Two months is enough for this sign to know they want to be living with their significant other. Strong and outstanding, Scorpios demand respect, and the type of property that can match their personality can only be a mansion. SAGITTARIUS – 6 YEARS – END OF TERRACE HOUSE This sign is known for being very truthful, even if the truth will hurt the people around them, they don’t feel the need to sugar-coat anything. This could cause trouble in their relationship and may cause them to lose relationships quickly. If you’ve been with them for several years then that might be enough time for them to see the relationship as long lasting, and they may ask their partners to move in together. While they like their friends, they also need to have ‘me time’, so an end-ofterrace house would be perfect for them to be close to other people but at the same time have some space to themselves. CAPRICORN – 10 MONTHS – CONVERTED FLAT While some may call them stubborn, Capricorns in fact just know what they want, and they will work hard to achieve it, whether it’s in their professional or private lives. With a very corporate approach to love, they would sit down with a partner and discuss where the relationship is going. They would probably need just under a year to decide if it’s time to move in together; and because they like having people around, a converted flat would be right up their alley.
