A Family Affair

Established for over 30 years, the Francesco Group salon in Shrewsbury has been in the expert hands of husband and wife team, Greg and Amy Corbett for the last three years and has seen the salon go from strength to strength.

The salon is part of the national salon group, Francesco Group, owned and run by the Italian Dellicompagni family. Biggies Diner and Boutique Hotel Myself and Eileen decided to take a drive over to Shrewsbury on a sunny Tuesday evening to Biggies diner, which has recently been transformed into a modern day American diner. We had heard great things about it, so this was certainly a restaurant we had great anticipation and excitement about visiting.

When we arrived, we parked at the rear of the restaurant in a spacious car park, a luxury that most eateries in the town don’t have and it certainly helps to make life easy, as at times Shrewsbury can be a very challenging place to park. At the side of the restaurant there is a lovely modern decking area and, my personal favourite, a foosball table – nice! As we entered we were warmly welcomed by Sophie, who runs the diner with her friendly team of staﬀ. They have achieved the wow factor, with a nice and spacious feel, multiple screens showing all the latest sports in the comfy bar area, where you can enjoy a cocktail or grab a beer or even a milkshake.

We were quickly shown to our table, a nice booth set out in a truly authentic American diner style. We were in the company of Marilyn Monroe, each booth had its own picture of an icon of music or the silver screen adorning the wall, and on the ﬂoor are Hollywood walk of fame stars for the diﬀerent celebrities. We were shown both menus and our drink orders were taken, Eileen went for a diet coke and I was tempted into trying the Reece’s sweet and salty Choco peanut shake. A glorious milkshake and arguably the best I have ever had, I was blown away by how big the shake was and the presentation was perfect, dripping in cream and peanut butter.

For my starter I decided to try the Awesome Pretzel Chicken Tenders and Eileen was delighted to see the Drunken Bubba Gump Shrimp Tacos, as she loves a good ﬁsh dish. My chicken was divine, with a crispy coating but nice and tender in the middle and with no grease whatsoever, the twist was delivered by the crushed pretzels mingled into the

Moving on to our main courses, Eileen went for the Chillin and Chargrilling Chicken Burger; a chargrilled chicken breast topped with BBQ sauce Monterey cheese served on a bed of salad in a brioche bun, and some Pulled Beef Chilli fries on the side. I was intrigued by one of the options, which was something I wouldn’t usually have gone for, but I just had to give a go; The Chicken and Waffle Burger, pretzel chicken tenders and crispy bacon topped with melted cheese in between homemade biggies waffles and drizzled with maple. Eileen’s main course was fantastically presented, the chicken on the burger was seasoned perfectly and the BBQ sauce and Monterey cheese blended to make this a match made in heaven. The chips were amazing, basic fries transformed into foodie heaven with generous helpings of chilli beef, with cheese melted all over, oozing through the layers below and topped with sour cream and jalapenos giving it a lip-smacking kick. I was absolutely mesmerised by my dish, the word Biggies definitely applies to this meal. Two pieces of crispy chicken, between two huge homemade waffles with maple syrup drizzled all over. I started with the smallest item on my plate and that was curly fries, I’ve always loved these as they take me back to my childhood – good times. The waffles themselves were fresh and nice and soft, flavour was definitely something this course wasn’t lacking in. The chicken again was nice and crispy but juicy in the centre. If you are up for a challenge this is the meal for you.

Unfortunately we had no room for pudding, something we rarely say! The portions here are gargantuan, so if you love desserts then you may want to leave the starter and save some space so you don’t have to miss out too – I will remember this the next time I go as I saw a Hazelnut Praline ‘Waﬄewich’ which I still need to get to grips with! Overall we had an epic experience and even tops the food experiences I had in Florida and I would recommend a visit without doubt. Biggies cater for everyone and every occasion – It is the Modern Day American Diner YOU’VE been waiting for!

3 Peaks Challenge Fundraising

Zest, based in Oswestry, will see ﬁve of its members with ages ranging from 21 to 58, undertake the gruelling 3 Peaks Challenge on 27th June, to raise funds for the Alzheimers’s Society.

The group have been training for a year, making trips to Ben Nevis and the Lakes as well as in the gym and out on the local hills. They have already climbed all the three peaks several times. Pauline Lacey, proprietor of Zest said “We feel ready for the challenge and are looking forward to it, even though the training has been seriously hard work” Dementia is a scary subject and research into it is underfunded. GARDENING FEATURE We all love to relax in the garden in the summer, but what looks like lovely green grass can, on closer inspection, be a depressing mix of moss and weeds. If you are determined to have a lush lawn for the summer, now is the ideal time to give your lawn an overhaul to ensure it remains in the peak of health over the coming summer months. Here are a few simple tips from lawn expert Jason Bell, of lawn treatment company GreenThumb, based in Oswestry, to get the perfect lawn and keep it that way right through the year.

The most important thing is to give your lawn a much-deserved drink. Water at times when the moisture is likely to soak in rather than evaporate - early morning or late evening is the best. When it’s dry, a good soaking once or twice a week is much more beneﬁcial for your lawn as opposed to a light sprinkling every day, as this can cause the roots to grow shallow and be prone to drying out. Try to mow your lawn at least once a week, keeping the height of the grass to about 25mm (1”) or 50mm (2”) during dry spells. Avoid cutting too short as this will encourage weeds and moss to enter your lawn. In hot, dry weather your lawn will become stressed and it is advisable to reduce the amount of mowing, and allow your grass to grow longer. Hotter weather and dry spells over the summer can lead to your lawn turning yellow and drying up. There are some really eﬀective treatments out there that can help grass stay greener for longer, such as the Oasis treatment from local lawn care specialist GreenThumb. The surfactant attaches itself to the molecules in the soil to conserve any moisture, helping to reduce the amount of watering needed. Where soil type is mainly clay,

which is common in the Oswestry region, the amount of water needed to keep grass green can be reduced by up to 80%, so you can spend less time watering and more time enjoying your lawn.

At this time of year, GreenThumb provide an Early Summer treatment. This will continue to nourish the grass plant using a controlled release fertiliser, whilst keeping the growth and colour over the warm summer months. Weeds are also targeted to ensure that any remaining weeds are controlled.

Often the centrepiece that sets oﬀ spectacular ﬂowering borders, and links patio to pond or sundeck to shrubbery, the lawn is frequently the least cared-for feature in the garden. ‘Weeds are the bane of many lawns, and spring-time onwards is a good time to tackle them,” says Jason. “Our treatment controls dandelions, daisies and clover, as well as other weeds.”

Now in its ﬁfth year, Shrewsbury Food Festival is going from strength to strength. TV chef Sally Bee, who cooks for ITV's Lorraine; Nathan Eades from Simpsons and Stephane Borie from The Checkers; plus Shropshire stars Chris Burt from The Peach Tree and Karl Martin from Old Downton Lodge, are amongst those who will bring their culinary skills to the Wenlock Spring Chef Demonstration Stage. Learn new skills Shrewsbury Food Festival encourages everyone to get involved - no matter what

their age or experience - and learn something new, from rolling sushi, to roasting ingredients over an open ﬁre. The FBC Mamby Bowdler Cookery School will run throughout the festival weekend and focuses on making dishes that are quick and easy, so everyone will leave with an increased recipe range, not to mention some extra knife skills. New for 2017 Shropshire’s biggest festival is getting even bigger. Never one for standing still, this year sees some exciting developments such as a new craft area - which will be ﬁlled with potters, glass blowers, artists, and photographers- plus an opportunity for the more adventurous to learn bushcraft skills. Foraging anyone?

Fun for all the family Beth Heath, festival co-founder, is not called the Director of Fun for nothing. There is a huge array of entertainment, such as live music performances from bands, choirs and singers on The Buttermarket stage providing the perfect opportunity to sit down, have a drink and soak up the festival vibes. Katie’s Kids Kitchen will be oﬀering classes to a range of young budding chefs. And, if cooking is not quite to their taste, the huge children’s area will keep them occupied for hours. It is full of free activities such as the climbing wall, a creative area, a “Have a Go” music tent - plus an onsite crèche, allowing parents to have some uninterrupted shopping time!

Lunch Trail Just as London is celebrating its own Food Month throughout June, so too is Shrewsbury. The town has far too much talent to showcase over one weekend, so around 30 restaurants in Shrewsbury will take part in the Monks Estate Agents Lunch Club. Lunch is oﬀered for £5, encouraging people try somewhere new. This runs throughout June and is the perfect festival appetiser.

Value for money Tickets for the festival are extremely reasonably priced to ensure everyone can come and join in with the fun. Adult tickets are £7, while children gain entry for £2 and family tickets are £15. All activities and entertainment within the festival are included within the ticket price. Everyone is advised to arrive hungry.

What's more, each year, the festival donates money to a local school to build a garden and the festival is inviting applications from schools again this year.

The RAF Cosford Air Show, taking place on Sunday 11th June 2017, is one of the UK’s premier aviation events and the Royal Air Force’s only official Air Show. The 2017 event will be bigger and better than ever before with multiple hangars of interactive exhibits, an extensive array of military ground displays and an eclectic mix of aircraft displays! The six-hour flying display will include an exciting mix of military and civilian aircraft from the UK and overseas, performing spectacular aerial displays. Spring Festival Gives More, More, More...

This year’s Ludlow Spring Festival promises to be a real corker bringing together the very best regional beer, food, music, plus gorgeous classic cars in the form of the Marches Transport Festival.

This is a beer festival and so much more, with 200 plus glorious real ales from more than 60 local brewers available to taste over the weekend. For those not so keen on beer, don’t worry there will also be ciders, perry, fruit ﬂavoured liqueurs and local wines. There will also be plenty of artisan producers too, so don’t wait till the September Festival to stock up on your favourite products.

In this year’s Chefs Kitchen area you can try your hand at Perfect Sticky, Spicy Buffalo Wings, Curry Chow and Braaing, South African style. There will also be coffee masterclasses with award winning barista, Danielle (Hadley) from Danielle’s Coffee.

As always the beer and food are accompanied by a wealth of great music from jazz and blues to Latin and folk, as well as The Marches Transport Festival. This year’s Ludlow Spring Festival runs 13-14 May, however; there is a special preview evening on Friday 12 May when visitors can ‘Meet the Brewer’. It’s a unique opportunity to talk to brewers about their beers and sample the full selection.

With prizes handed out early in the weekend, favourites sell out quickly so the Friday preview is an opportunity not to be missed.

BEEF STEAKS Let’s face it, it is pretty hard to beat a good steak when it comes to summer eating - from thick juicy ﬁllet steaks to a good old slab of rump. These barbecued steaks are easy-peasy and super tasty and they are ready in just 20 minutes!

7 Tablespoons Butter 4 To 6 Cloves Garlic, Minced 2kg (4 Lb) Beef Steaks (Fillet, Sirloin or Rump - whichever you prefer) Salt And Freshly Ground Black Pepper To Season to Taste Mixed Salad Leaves

Preheat barbecue for high heat.

In a small saucepan, melt butter over medium-low heat with garlic. Set aside.

Season both sides of each steak with salt and pepper.

Barbecue steaks 4 to 5 minutes per side, or to desired doneness. When cooked, transfer to a serving board and slice into strips.

Brush twith a little garlic butter, and allow to rest for 2 to 3 minutes before serving.

Served with a mixed leaf salad and small dish of garlic butter. For an extra special treat crumble some blue cheese (Stilton works great) through the salad.

Shortcrust Pastry (Ready Made is just ﬁne, or you can make your own from scratch) For the Filling: 500ml Full Fat Milk 2 Vanilla Pods, Seeds Removed And Pods Retained 6 Free-Range Egg Yolks 120g Caster Sugar 50g Plain Flour Mixed Berries, Strawberries (halved or quartered), Raspberries, Bluberries, Redcurrants and Mint to garnish.

- For this I am using ready made shortcrust pasrty cases (available in most supermarkets either already baked or in a roll ready to cut) but you could make your own if you like. - For the filling, place the milk, vanilla seeds and pods into a large saucepan and warm though. Place the eggs, sugar and flour in a large mixing bowl and whisk until the colour changes and becomes pale. Gradually add the warm milk and vanilla to the egg mixture, whisk together, then return the mixture to the pan. Cook on a low heat until it the mixture thickens, then pour into a clean bowl. Place a circle of greaseproof paper on the mixture, to stop a skin forming. - Fill the pastry cases with the cooled filling by either spooning it in or piping (using a piping bag) then add your chosen berries and garnish with a sprig of mint.

New report assesses impact of physical inactivity on UK heart health and economy cardiovascular health and risk of early death.

Take on the MyMarathon challenge More than 20million UK adults are classified as physically inactive increasing their risk of heart disease and costing the UK health service as much as £1.2billion each year according to our new report. The Physical Inactivity and Sedentary Behaviour Report represents the most up-to-date analysis of UK adults and their level of inactivity – one of the most significant national health crises threatening people’s cardiovascular health today.

What the report shows

The report shows that more than 20million adults in the UK are failing to meet Government guidelines for physical activity, and that women are 36% more likely to be considered physically inactive than men. Statistics show the regions in England where people are most physically inactive, with the North West coming out worst as almost half of the adult population – 2.7million adults– are insufficiently active. Evidence is growing that also shows a sedentary lifestyle, regardless of how physically active you are, is associated with poor health. Our estimates show that the average man in the UK spends a fifth of their lifetime sitting - the equivalent of 78 days each year. For women this is around 74 days a year.

Inactivity and heart health

More than 5 million deaths worldwide are attributed to physical inactivity. In the UK alone it causes one in ten premature deaths from coronary heart disease, and one in six deaths overall. Evidence shows keeping physically active can reduce the risk of heart and circulatory disease by as much as 35% and risk of early death by as much as 30%.

Dr Mike Knapton, our Associate Medical Director, said: “Physical inactivity is one of the most significant global health crises of the moment. Levels of physical inactivity and sedentary behaviour in the UK remain stubbornly high, and combined these two risk factors present a substantial threat to our

The charttopping singer?s New York show precedes a charity auction of the hotly anticipated new mid-size SUV at the East Side House Settlement Annual Gala later this week.

Goulding brought a touch of British glamour to the Velar?s US launch party when she arrived in Manhattan ? the Metropolitan home of Range Rover ? to be the ﬁrst person to drive the new Velar and to sing for a global online audience. Her performance of ?Love Me Like You Do? opened the reveal event and was shown live on her Facebook page. Ellie said: ?I have always been a big Range Rover fan and it was a pleasure to be a part of its launch here in the US. Even more rewarding to be supporting a local charity that improves over 10,000 lives every year in one of my favourite cities.? A Range Rover Velar will be auctioned at the East Side House Settlement charity gala, a preview of the 2017 New York International Auto Show, at the Jacob Javits Center on Thursday 13 April. The winning bidder will be among the ﬁrst customers in the world to take delivery of the highly coveted new vehicle. New York remains the world?s biggest Range Rover market.

Proceeds from the gala will beneﬁt the East Side House Settlement, a non-proﬁt organisation providing education and social services in the Bronx and north Manhattan.
