Drapers Hall 10 St.Marys Place, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, SY1 1DZ Tel: 01743 344679
Nestled at the heart of Shrewsbury’s historic centre, Drapers Hall is a wellestablished and popular restaurant, tapas bar and boutique hotel.
Located in a Drapers guildhall dating back to 1485, the restaurant and rooms still retain much of their original character. A stylish new cocktail bar adds a contemporary twist against the backdrop of exposed beams and 17th century oak panelling. The restaurant and bar, established by chef Nigel Huxley and his wife Sharon in 2000, has become one of Shrewsbury’s foremost venues offering classic and innovative cuisine in a stunning and unique setting. Drapers Hall also has six AA five-star rated boutique rooms and suites, each elegantly combining a traditional atmosphere with modern comforts to provide a luxurious environment. It is ideally placed to enjoy this beautiful
and exciting market town.
Because of Drapers Hall’s reputation we were extremely excited when we were invited by Nigel and Sharon to visit and experience all the delights on offer. On arrival we were greeted by senior waiter, Grant, who made us feel instantly welcome and relaxed. Grant graciously offered to take us on a tour of the whole building, which we accepted without hesitation. Firstly, we were shown the main areas on the first floor, which we gained access to via a glorious handcrafted staircase. The boutique rooms and suites are all very luxurious, each with differing styles all in keeping with a building from the Tudor and Stuart periods. We were then led into a private dining area that was set out for a wedding banquet on two long tables. I was really taken aback by how elegantly the place settings were
laid out, with the moonlight streaming in through a magnificent leaded window.
The impressive cocktail bar is well stocked with local guest ales and a vast number of spirits. The wine list alone runs for seven pages and cocktails are a popular choice among customers. The jewel in Drapers’ Crown, is its jaw-dropping baronial style dining hall, complete with a large stone fireplace, floor-to-ceiling oak panelling and towering leaded windows. Grant introduced us to the waitress that would be attending to us for the evening. We were taken to our table, which she had selected due to its close proximity next to the gloriously roaring fire that made us feel warm and cosy. The dining room has retained much of the 17th century furniture that was made for the Drapers Guild, including a

400-year-old long table, still with the Master’s chair at its head. But the new also sits comfortably alongside the old at Drapers, from quirky modern seats upholstered in cow hide to original contemporary works of art on the walls.
With so many excellent wines listed, I asked our waitress for a recommendation. We settled on a Sauvignon blanc, a refreshing wine with lovely grassy tones. Despite such tempting starters as Drapers Hall’s legendary seared scallops or its beef carpaccio, we decided to sample the popular tapas menu instead. The ‘Lamb Kofta with minted Greek yoghurt’ and ‘Tempura battered vegetables with chilli sauce & crème fraiche’ were absolutely delicious. Deciding on our main dishes was difficult - so many wonderful sounding dishes to choose from, such as wild sea trout, Rib Eye steak, a Chateaubriand or
a fish platter of no less than stone bass, scallops, red mullet, wild trout and cuttlefish. We settled for a ‘T Bone steak with sauteed mushrooms and roasted tomato’ and grilled ‘line caught stone bass with olive tapenade, confit fennel and tomato’. Both were excellent choices, the steak tender and the fish, as it should be, flaking from the bone. We had just finished our main course when our waitress came over with perfect timing to enquire if we would like to order a dessert. We had no hesitation. I opted for a baked chocolate fondant that came complemented by a dollop of homemade vanilla ice cream and caramelised orange slices. My companion was intrigued by an unusual stollen bread and butter pudding that was served with a delicate warm apricot compote. Fondants can so easily be ruined by the slightest over baking, but
this one was perfectly soft and runny inside. My companion was raptured by the subtle tangy flavours of the bread and butter pudding. Both desserts were incredibly indulgent and they rounded off a thoroughly enjoyable evening.
For food and surroundings, it’s difficult to beat Drapers Hall. I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxed high quality restaurant, bar or hotel within Shrewsbury. Its unique setting also makes it an ideal choice for special occasions or romantic bespoke weddings.
Drapers Hall is hosting a four-course Valentine’s Day Gourmet Dinner on Friday February 14 at £45 per person, including a champagne cocktail. For reservations call 01743 344679.

Mytton & Mermaid Review_Double Page Editorial 23/01/2014 20:11 Page 1
The Mytton & Mermaid Hotel stands gracefully on the banks of the beautiful, meandering River Severn. This is a magnificent grade II listed building that has been tastefully decorated and captures the charms of its original coaching inn days, reflecting an atmosphere of comfort and tranquillity.
The Mytton & Mermaid has a renowned restaurant, so when I learned that we were going to carry out a review, I jumped at the chance! My colleague, Imran, and I pulled into the car park and sat for a moment to take in the impressive building and the glorious surrounding countryside, but the thought of the wonderful delights awaiting us soon drew our thoughts towards heading inside. We were greeted by the friendly front of house staff, who showed us to our table and brought some menus for us. We had chosen to visit during lunch, so opted for soft drinks, although there is an extensive wine list.
The restaurant is a lovely size, with a relaxed dining atmosphere. There are large dining areas that are ideal for the Weddings that are held at the hotel, which can be separated into smaller more intimate rooms, ideal for lunch. The décor is beautiful, with large plump leather sofas in comfortable seating areas, as well as long elegant tables set out for larger parties.
We had a choice from the main menu and a special lunchtime menu and were spoiled for choice. My eye was caught by a Chicken Liver and Tanners Port Parfait, with Apple and Thyme Jelly, Lambs Leaf Salad & Toasted Brioche and Imran was intrigued by the Balsamic Roasted Tomato and Red Pepper Soup, with Mozzarella Croute, Black Olive Tapenade and Basil Oil. While we waited for them to arrive we chatted and enjoyed the laid back atmosphere. The starters arrived and we could not wait to tuck in! The Parfait was so smooth and creamy in texture, with a wonderful flavour. The lambs leaf salad and tangy jelly, made the perfect partners, along with the lightly toasted brioche; it was delicious. From across the table I could hear regular groans of delight as Imran ate his soup; he was really enjoying the rich flavours of the roasted tomato and peppers, but the mozzarella, was the ‘cherry on top’ metaphorically speaking obviously!
The mouth-watering starters had really wet our appetites, and both of us were eager to try the main courses we had ordered. I had decided that the 8oz Sirloin Steak was definitely for me, and Imran had spotted Carrot, Roasted Nut and Parmesan Sausages. We didn’t have to wait very long at all before the mains arrived, looking absolutely amazing. My Sirloin was stunning and literally melted in my mouth; it came with the lightest
crispy Onion Rings, Watercress, Grilled Vine Tomato & Hand Cut Chips, but I opted for a fresh salad instead of chips as I had started my New Year’s diet! It was by no means an ‘ordinary’ salad and it was so tasty with sun dried tomatoes, I really enjoyed it. Imran’s Carrot, Roasted Nut and Parmesan Sausages, were accompanied by Sage and Onion Mash, Braised Savoy Cabbage, Baby Onions. He could not believe how scrumptious the sausages were, oozing with flavour and even asked if the chef was willing to let him in on his secret recipe. Although we were completely stuffed, Imran found the dessert menu too tempting to miss out on. He said to the waitress ‘well I ought to try the dessert, you know, for our readers’, but I really don’t think she was buying this! He went for a Sticky Toffee Pudding, Pecan and Butterscotch Sauce & Vanilla Pod Ice Cream. When it arrived, he seemed to find a new lease of life and eagerly set about devouring it, explaining to me with each mouthful how delightful it was.
The Mytton & Mermaid is a must visit, the location is brilliant, the staff are very professional and friendly and the food is absolutely stunning. I would definitely recommend The Mytton Mermaid to anyone who enjoys good food. You will definitely want to go back again and again, I know I do. Reviewed by Eileen Callear

e Animal Management Experience
Many people associate the Walford Campus of Walford and North Shropshire College (WNSC) with Agriculture, which is correct owing to the 150 plus full-time students and trainees studying this subject. However, for the past 18 years WNSC has also been delivering Animal Science and Management programmes, this has now become the largest department. The College is also in its second year of delivering animal courses at a purpose-built facility at the Shipley Campus, Bridgnorth Road (next to Gardenlands).
Over the last 12 months the College has invested heavily in Agricultural resources with a new state-of-the-art 300-cow Dairy Unit at Walford, but also, many may not realise that there is also a small zoo at Walford with over 90 species and a smaller zoo at Shipley with over 50 species of animal and thousands of examples including mammal, reptile, fish, invertebrate, amphibian, etc. Over the last nine years our second year Level 3 Agricultural students have been going to New Zealand for three weeks to learn about non-subsidised profitable farm systems which is vitally important as
our own Agricultural Industry is moving to a non-subsidised system. Last month Rupert Hill, Deputy Head of Faculty and Head of the Animal Management department visited Northern Zambia to set up a study tour for the Level 3 Animal Management and the Foundation degree in Animal Science with Animal Health Management (validated by Staffordshire University) students. The Kasanka Trust who WNSC is partnering oversees not only the Kasanka National Park, but also Lavushi Manda (1500 square kilometres) and the adjacent Bangweulu wetlands. The aim of
this study tour is for the students to research the rich variety of habitats, undertake conservation work and get involved in community projects. This will involve day and night safaris and river expeditions. This experience will be valuable for the students in future job opportunities and progression into higher education.
As our Animal Management students want to progress further up the ‘educational ladder’ we have met this demand by successfully validating a new Foundation Degree in Animal Science with Animal Health Management through Staffordshire University which starts in September 2014. This two year full-time programme will involve many animal science subjects, research projects and further study tours equipping our students for a very rewarding career.
If you are considering a future in an Animal Management / Science please visit the website at www.wnsc.ac.uk or call 01691 688080.

THE HUSBANDS Kali Theatre and Pentabus Theatre present: By Sharmila Chauhan
Against a backdrop of modern rural India The Husbands is an explosive new play about love, jealousy and a woman’s right to choose. It’s Aya’s wedding day. Her third. Her current two husbands aren’t too fussed. In a society in which there are few women, that’s just what happens. But as the household prepares for the wedding feast, a stranger arrives – one who threatens to challenge everything they believe in. Award winning Kali Theatre and Pentabus Theatre have got together to present this provocative new play about love, jealousy and a woman’s right to choose.
It starts on Aya’s wedding day. Her third. Her current two husbands aren’t too fussed. In a society in which there are few women, that’s just what happens. But as the household prepares for the wedding feast, a stranger arrives – one who threatens to challenge everything they believe in… The Husbands is an imaginative response to the real issue of female infanticide that has become widespread in rural India. Girls are seen a drain on precious family resources whereas sons are seen as
valuable assets so girl babies are routinely aborted or quietly killed soon after birth. The result is a serious lack of young women and in some villages it’s becoming increasingly common for two men or more to share one wife. Sharmila Chauhan imagines a society where this has become the norm and then weaves a moving tale of love, jealousy and power using vivid, poetic language to show this extraordinary but believable new world.
directed over 30 readings of new work and 11 productions for Kali. After many years as an actress, Janet began directing in 1988 at Loose Change Theatre. Other directing credits include Behzti (The Rep), April in Paris, Bretevski Street, A Hard Rain, Top Girls (Northampton Royal), Millennium Mysteries, Big School (Belgrade Coventry).
Sharmila comments ‘In parts of India, polyandry has become a necessity. I wrote The Husbands both as a response to this but also as an exploration of the complexities of love, intimacy and trust between one woman and three men. In a sense this play is as much a warning as an allegory for the fate of women in The West today.’ The Husbands is directed by Janet Steel Artistic Director of Kali . Janet Steel has

From the preparation of luxury food and the sacrifice of the lamb to the dressing of the bride and the dance to end all dances, this will be an exuberant, joyful and challenging piece of theatre. Writer Sharmila Chauhan was shortlisted for the Asian New Writer award and chosen for the Royal Court's Critical Mass programme. Her short stories have been published online and in print, including Tell Tales Vol 2 and Happy Birthday to Me. She is also a pharmacologist so her work life mixes medicine, prose and plays.

In his biography Michael says: “I think it’s the best album I’ve ever made…I know every artist on earth says that when their new album is coming out but really - this time it’s true. I swear.
You can ask my mother. But don’t take my word for it or my mom’s. Play it yourself and you’ll see and hear I’m telling the honest truth. I want to take you on a wonderful journey about love – all different kinds of love.
The album swings big time – it rocks – it’s soulful – it’s happy –sometimes a little sad - it’s romantic – it’s yummy and it’s heartfelt.
Do not think I take my success these last ten years for granted. I was anything but an overnight sensation which inspires me to deliver big time for my fans – maybe even make some new ones this time out. Trust me, there’s no sitting back, no dialing in for me. I labored over every song, every note and every arrangement because I can’t resist trying to make each record better than my last one. It helps that I’m pretty happy in my life at the moment and feel that I’ve really grown a lot as a songwriter and interpreter of great songs. On “To Be
Loved” I felt a new sense of freedom to create and kind of take things further – maybe take a few risks and dig deep to find some gems. None of these songs would be what they were without the help of my partner in crime, the great Bob Rock who helped me realize all my dreams with the songs on “To Be Loved”. He is a producer extraordinaire and was there 1000 percent every day we were recording. Special thanks go to the vocal talents of Naturally 7, The Puppini Sisters and The Dap Kings for perfecting the sound I was trying to create. I don’t know if people even read these things so if you’ve gotten this far, thank you for taking the time. I know I sing better than I write but I wanted you to understand a little bit about what I wanted to accomplish with “To Be Loved”. I hope you love my record. See you on the road.” Love, Michael. Ali G, a boorish, uneducated, faux-streetwise character with a deeply stereotypical view of the world, first came to our screens on Channel 4's The 11 O'Clock Show as the "voice of da yoof" in 1998. He interviewed various public figures, embarrassing the interviewee with masses of political incorrectness and getting them to agree to all kinds of insults. Examples of his bold interviewing style include getting Lindsay Urwin, the Bishop of Horsham, to admit that God created the Universe, and then asking him, "And since then, he's just chilled?"
In an interview with the Chairman of the Arts Council of England Gerry Robinson Ali G's first question was: "Why is the arts so - excuse me French, but - crap?"
The funniest one for me was his interview with the Beckhams, for comic relief. David was picked on straight away. 'Now, just
because it's Comic Relief doesn't mean you can speak in a silly voice,' said Ali . Victoria was left speechless by a conversation about her son Brooklyn. 'So how old is Brooklyn now?' Ali asked. 'He's nearly two,' replied Victoria. 'So tell me, is your little boy starting to put whole sentences together?' 'He's learning the bits and pieces, so yeah.' 'And what about Brooklyn?'
He went on to ask her about a recent bout of illness ‘Posh me heard you recently ad a disease of de head, called mingingitis, are you better now?’, Victoria replied ‘I had viral meningitis, but yeah i’m better now’. Ali quickly replies ‘so did sporty catch the mingingitis from you then? cos she as got it well bad!’ Me for one is well looking forward to seeing Ali G back. Things as not been the same wivout him.Big up the Wes Side Massive, Aight!! Ali G: Rezurection Debuts in February

Beyonce Mrs Carter Tour_Double Page Editorial 10/01/2014 11:10 Page 1
That the album was available on the day the world learned about its release was an unprecedented strategic move by the artist to deliver music and visual content directly to her fans when she wants to and how she wants to, with no filter. This unique approach allows music fans to be the first to listen, view, engage and form their own opinions void of any middleman. In the age of social media and an insatiable appetite for direct communication, it was the answer to the question asked over and over again, when was Beyoncé’s next album coming?
“ I didn’t want to release my music the way I’ve done it,” she explained. “I am bored with that. I feel like I am able to speak directly to my fans. There’s so much that gets between the music, the artist and the fans. I felt like I didn’t want anybody to give the message when my record was coming out. I just want this to come out when it’s ready and from me to my fans.” Stripped of gimmicks, teasers and marketing campaigns, this project is truly about art before hype. Not one to stand on past achievements, this is an artist who thrives on evolving, challenging herself and raising the bar. This creative process gave Beyoncé power over her music and provided an opportunity to control how the music is heard. She is not playing by the rules and breaking what is expected, preferring to put music out as an entire body of work. Beyoncé, wearing multiple hats as writer, producer and director, put together a genius team of artists, songwriters, producers and video directors for her visual album that include JAY Z, Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, Pharrell Williams, Drake, The Dream, Sia, Ryan
For the videos, some of which she co-directed, she preferred to work with a more care-free formula. Shot primarily during her successful “Mrs. Carter Show World Tour”. The videos are visually stimulating, charged with visionary cinematography and clever storytelling. They capture every side of who she is, complete with vulnerability and even her imperfections, YES even Bey has some!!
The “Mrs. Carter Show World Tour” is now on its way to the UK, with Queen Bey kicking things off in Glasgow on 20th February, playing 12 dates across the UK including 2 at Birmingham’s LG Arena.
Beyonce's new UK 2014 February and March tour dates are as follows:
{ February 23 - LG Arena, Birmingham { February 24 - LG Arena, Birmgingham { February 25 - Manchester Arena, Manchester { February 26 - Manchester Arena, Manchester { February 28 - The O2, London { March 1 - The O2, London { March 2 - The O2, London { March 4-6 - The O2, London

“I see music,” says Beyoncé about her decision to create a visual album. “It’s more than just what I hear. When I’m connected to something, I immediately see a visual or a series of images that are tied to a feeling or an emotion, a memory from my childhood, thoughts about life, my dreams or my fantasies. And they’re all connected to the music.”
Tedder, Miguel, Frank Ocean, Hit Boy, Ammo, Boots, Detail, Jake Nava, Hype Williams, Terry Richardson, Melina Matsoukas, Jonas Åkerlund, Ricky Saiz, Pierre Debusschere, @lilinternet, Noah “40” Shebib, Francesco Carrozzini, Caroline Polachek, Ed Burke, Bill Kirstein and Todd Tourso.
WELL HELLO...Mrs Carter!
Beyoncé will be performing tracks from her 'surprise' 2013 album, which is self-titled. The album features collaborations with husband Jay-Z, daughter Blue Ivy, Drake and Frank Ocean among others. The album is 14 tracks long, but as a visual album, comes with an additional 17 videos.

THE HYPE - ROMANTIC DESTINATIONS
PARIS 1 That’s AMORE!
Paris, the city of love, who could question that? It really is a city for lovers, for strolls along the Seine, sipping coffee at a café, and for picture-perfect moments in romantic neighbourhoods like Montmartre. Then there's the Champs Elysees, the Eiffel Tower lit up at night, and the many, many gardens like the Jardin du Luxembourg. In Paris, love is in the air everywhere you look around.
ROME 3 Monte Belle
Rome stirs the senses, evoking images of gladiators and ancient times; Rome is one of the world's most dazzling cities. Lovers sit by its many fountains to throw coins as they make a wish, share gelatos and sip cappuccinos in the middle of beautiful piazzas, all while soaking in three thousand years of history. In Rome, life really is dolce.
LAS VEGAS 5 Viva Las Vegas
You might wonder why Las Vegas? Well with an average of 315 weddings a day it is the marriage capital of the world. Iconic spots such as the drive-through altar at the Little White Chapel and the Graceland Wedding Chapel are must see sights on the Vegas map, even if tying the knot is not part of your plans! Not only that, Las Vegas has got all of the other top romantic cities, all rolled into one. There is the Eiffel tower at the Paris hotel, the indoor gondolas at the Venetian hotel, the dramatic Caesar’s Palace with its glorious Roman themes and the wonderful New York New York. I got married in the Little White Chapel and would recommend it to anyone, it was an amazing experience!
Romantic Cities_Double Page Editorial 10/01/2014 14:55 Page 2
VENICE 2 Just One Cornetto
Venice always seems like a bit of a miracle to me, more like something from a Hollywood set, for the backdrop of a romantic film, than a real city. Thank goodness it’s not just from a movie, as it would most likely not capture the fairy tale that it is in reality. Canals and stunning architecture, what could be more romantic than a gondola ride, or a walk over narrow bridges, getting lost through the narrow lanes, and ending up at monumental square? If you're not in love already, you will be.
NEW YORK 4 The Big Apple
The "Capital of the world" lives up to that title. From Wall Street to Broadway, there is always something going on in the city that never sleeps, new restaurants opening to share all of the world's cuisines, what’s not to love. From pizzerias in little Italy to walking through Central Park in the snow, it doesn’t get much more romantic! Trendsetting New York is the city everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime.

Valentines every day_Full Page Bleed New 23/01/2014 20:50 Page 1
www.hypemagazine.co.uk
LOVE EVERY DAY LIKES ITS VALENTINES DAY We all remember that feeling, when we meet that special someone and can think of nothing but seeing them again. The thing is after a few years of cooking and washing raising the kids we can sometimes forget what it was like! It’s important to make time for each other as a couple.
Valentines is a great time to reignite the flames of passion, with maybe a nice meal out together or some nice gifts of chocilates and lingerie to remind us that we can still be romantic. But Valentines is just once a year, and most of us would like that feeling a little more often than yearly! So what can we do to keep the pot on simmer rather than letting it go completely off he boil? There are some simple things that you can do to keep the ‘Valentines’ feeling going, and here are a few!
Firstly, it’s important to spend some time together. You are not gonna get very far if one of you is atching the soaps and the other is playing on the Xbox! Find a couple of things that you both enjoy, that you can do together. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good thing to
have your own hobbies but you can soon become strangers living under the same roof if you don’t have balance. Check out what films are on at the flicks, or even on DVD and watch it together. Another important thing that we can forget to do is LISTEN to each other. After a busy day, most of us just want to flop on the sofa. But it’s important to communicate. One of the best ways of doing this is having dinner at the table together. It’s nice to just sit and chat just to see what each of you has been up to, and to see how your other half is doing. If a problem comes up, pay attention and discuss it - it’s normally the only way to come up with a solution.
Have a date night, hire a sitter or ask a family member to help out. Just a bit of time away from the house, kids, work AND freinds can make all the difference. It is somtimes a good idea to mix things up, so maybe two dates a month, one just the two of you and maybe the other with some freinds. Either way it’s nice to be able to have a few hours to relax and enjoy each others company. Make sure you ban talk of work, kids, bills and all the stuff that you are supposed to be forgetting about for a while!
The ultimate treat for any couple is a holiday away together. If you get the opportunity to get away without the kids, even if just for a couple of nights, TAKE IT! We sometimes feel bad leaving the kids behind, but often they enjoy the break from us just as much as we do from them! It doesn’t have to be miles away from home either. Check out some local hotels to see what’s available in your area. Remember why you fell in love and you can keep that Valentines feeling alive all year round!

John Biddle Edit_Double Page Editorial 23/01/2014 12:48 Page 1
John Biddle Opticians (JBO) is an independent established in 1972 and remains in the same ownership today (but with a younger team). Young and experienced. A nice combination.
The Optometrist determines whether the eyes require visual correction, are the front line in monitoring eye health, and specialise in contact lenses. The Dispensing Optician specialises in interpreting the prescription and recommends a choice of lens solutions, is experienced in assisting with frame selection (with reference to the type of lenses and facial features), and also possesses the skills necessary to manipulate and adjust the fitting of the frame to the head to satisfy all visual and aesthetic requirements. Independent Opticians differentiate themselves from the High Street multiples by their passion for the job, in understanding your individual optical needs and recommending appropriate solutions from a wide range of products. If there is a belief that independent Optician’s are more expensive than the High Street multiple Opticians it is not really true. We have frames and lenses starting from £29 a pair (free if you qualify for an NHS optical voucher). Of course you can pay more, as with everything else from cat food to cars. The difference with an independent is they have access to ALL the latest products and will explain their features and benefits when relevant to you. After all, with vision, everyone deserves, at least, to be offered the best solution.
Then you can make an informed choice, based on understanding and affordability.
Conventional distance or reading glasses were the only choice for a long time for hundreds of years with very little or no change, and in the case of bifocals from about 1875. Today, technology has enabled truly amazing improvements in vision correction, including improvements to contact lenses, all of which can make a real difference. An independent Optician is at the forefront of understanding this technology and making it available to you, if appropriate. Ultimately, the choice is yours, but a decision is better made when your personal options are explained by someone willing and able to spend the time doing so with you. If you have any questions or would like to arrange a free consultation, please call 01952 587423 or e-mail admin@johnbiddleopticians.com
Quotes from customers: “Just a quick e-mail to say thank you again for the excellent personal service you showed me recently when I renewed my glasses. It was a pleasure doing business with you, from the initial consultation through to the eye examination, and finally the appointment to have my new glasses checked and fitted. You displayed a level of personal and professional service that certainly wasn’t matched by almost all the other opticians in Shrewsbury. I must admit I had left you until last, as I had presumed you to be
somewhat expensive compared to the competition, but I guess that proves the old adage - you get what you pay for. However from the moment I walked into your branch I realised my money would be best spent with you. The young lady who is on reception has a manner that almost all receptionists could benefit from copying. She has such a welcoming smile and attitude it just reassures you that you will be well looked after. She admirably proves that old fashioned service doesn’t have to be ‘old fashioned’. Having a courtesy call before my appointment was also a nice touch, thank you. Rest assured that I will continue to come to you for all future eye tests and glasses - unless any of you leave, then I’ll just have to hope you will train your replacements to exactly the same high standards”. Mrs Rene B, Shrewsbury “I’d like to say a big thank you on behalf of my Mrs G. Your optician’s thorough test revealed a tumour behind her eyes. She has now been given the all clear and her doctor says that your speedy and accurate intervention has undoubtedly prevented a much worse situation from developing. Our heartfelt thanks” Mr G. Esthetique Dental Practice - Making you Smile!
Esthetique Dental Practice is now a well-established Dental practice having opened in 2013. It is set in an idyllic location in Shropshire just off the A49 at Hadnall. The practice provides a calm, relaxing and discreet environment with plenty of on-site free parking available. The very experienced team is led by Thomas Norlin (DDS, Odont Lic, Dipl) and Emily Wright (BDS). Esthetique Dental's services range from preventative and general dentistry for all the family, through to cosmetic and reconstructive dentistry, such as dental implants. Patients are always given sufficient time for their appointments so there is time to discuss treatment; and they are never made to feel rushed. They understand how some patients may feel uneasy about their visits. The team take pride in making the experience as relaxed and as positive as possible. The practice believes that preventive care and education is the key for good oral health for both adults and children. Thorough dental examinations are provided which include checking the overall health of your teeth and gums.
Performing oral cancer screening and taking X rays when necessary as well as utilising cameras to improve patients’ understanding of their oral health. Patients are then advised on the best ways to help prevent decay and gum disease or treat them early before problems advance.
For those patients that are looking to improve the beauty of their smile, perhaps considering tooth whitening, cosmetic orthodontics, dental implants or amalgam removal. Thomas and Emily have many years experience in cosmetic dentistry and will spend time to find the solution that’s right for you.
Teeth are for more than just chewing, many patients can live their lives covering their smile, hiding behind their hands when laughing or talking since they feel embarrassed by their teeth. By understanding patient’s fears of pain, inconvenience and expense of treatment, this practice is for anybody that seeks quality dentistry offering a wide range of options in treatments to find an individual solution for each patient. For those that wish to budget monthly for their Dental Care the practice offers Denplan and interest free Credit.

Mediation – a positive way forward There have been huge changes to the family law and legal aid system in England and Wales in the last few years. These led to a gradual reduction in the number of solicitor’s firms offering legal aid for family law work.
With just a few exceptions, the family legal aid system vanished as from April last year. This had an enormous effect on many people needing to deal with issues concerning their children or family finances as here in Shropshire and Mid Wales, as in the rest of the country, there is not the option of being able to use a solicitor with the benefit of legal aid. Also, the court system is under increasing pressure and resources available to CAFCASS and social services are ever more limited. Despite all this, issues about children and finances between former couples are not getting any less or easier. There is no simple solution to the problems which are inevitably caused by separation and divorce. So more and more couples are faced with a choice having to pay fees that they really cannot afford to use a solicitor, or sort out their problems on their own or make applications to the increasingly overburdened court system. However, there has been increased interest in other methods of resolving
disputes over the past few years, and the Ministry of Justice is encouraging couples to consider mediation. Mediation is an alternative way to resolve issues, where a qualified and independent mediator helps couples make their own arrangements for their children or dividing their assets without the need to go to court. Not only does this way of dealing with matters reduce conflict and hopefully help the couple to at least keep a civilised relationship for the future, but according to the Ministry’s own figures, mediation takes about a quarter of the time of court proceedings, and can be eight times cheaper. Importantly, legal aid is still available for mediation if an individual is financially eligible and so the whole process could well be free.

Article written by Cathy Swan, Solicitor and Mediator with Wace Morgan Family Mediation Service on legal aid changes and mediation
Mediation is not right for every separating couple, and mediation services will carry out careful individual assessments to ensure that it is the right way forward. Some cases will have to be resolved by a court, and mediation cannot solve every problem. However, many couples are surprised how issues can be narrowed and how much progress can be possible in a short space of time. The advantage of being able to speak directly to each other in a controlled and neutral environment is immense and can lead to great progress even where couples are not optimistic that they will be able

THE HYPE - HOME SECURITY
where you can easily find it. Personally I give my mom a spare key to keep for me (she is very trustworthy )

10. Ask for credentials from any salesperson who requests entry to your home. Ask that their ID be pushed under the door. Many professional burglars use this cover to check out homes. If you're doubtful, check with the person's office before letting him or her in.
TOP TIPS TO KEEP YOUR HOME SAFE FROM BURGLARS It’s something that most of us dread happening, coming home to find out that some criminal has broken in to our home and riffled through our most personal belongings. Even worse, are the stories of people being burgled
whilst they are asleep! We should be able to relax and feel safe within our own homes, and the thought that we sometimes aren’t is difficult to accept. Just lately, I have noticed that the news and Facebook have been full of stories of people being broken into. I recently read an article in the news explaining that burglary had risen over the Christmas period at a higher level than usual, maybe because of the economic issues facing the nation, but whatever the reason, it still left me a little more worried. Just before Christmas, my colleague had exactly this happen to him. He had a family get together at home and with all the different comings and goings, they had managed to go to bed and the back door had been left unlocked. While they were asleep, someone had simply walked in and took laptops and some bank cards etc. He was gutted, not just because the insurance won’t pay out if you have left a door unlocked, but because while they slept, someone had helped themselves to their hard earned belongings and intruded on their personal space. For weeks his wife didn’t feel safe and could barely sleep at night. Professional burglars are near impossible to stop, but a high percentage of burglaries are carried out by opportunists and amateurs. A few simple steps can help to reduce your chances of being their next victim and keep your home safe and secure, from these kinds of burglars. With this in mind I decided that I would put together some TOP TIPS FOR KEEPING YOUR HOME SECURE.
1. Lock up your home, even when you are home or if you go out only for a short time. Many burglars just walk in through an unlocked door or window. This means no matter how good your insurance is, they won’t pay out!
2. For alarm systems to be effective, it is best to conceal all wiring. A professional burglar looks for places where he or she can disconnect the security system. Get your system fitted by a reputable firm. 3. Change all the locks when you move into a new house.
4. Make it look like you are in at all times. Use timers to switch lights and radios on and off when you're not at home.
5. Get a deadbolt lock, this will prevent a burglar from “loiding” (a method used on spring-latch locks, where a credit card is slipped against the latch tongue to unlock the door), which cannot be used if a
deadbolt is in place.
6. If you lose, or even mislay a set of keys, get the locks changed! Again insurance does not cover burglaries where access has been gained by use of a key to the property.
7. If you have to pop out, but are expecting a delivery or someone is due to call round, don’t leave a huge note attached to your door telling everyone you are not in, it may as well say “Dear Burglar, Help Yourself!” 8. Security lights are a must, not only do they make life easy on dark nights but they will put off a burglar too, as they like to skulk around in the dark, unseen.
9. Don’t leave a key under the doormat! Or any other obvious place like under the plant pot etc... If you really need to leave a key for emergencies, wrap the key in foil -- or put it in a small container and bury it
11. Dogs are good deterrents to burglars. Even a small, noisy dog can be effective burglars do not like to have attention drawn to their presence. Be aware, however, that trained guard dogs do not make good pets! 12. To help burglar-proof your home, install 1-inch throw deadbolt locks on all exterior doors.
13. If there are door hinges on the outside of your house, take down the door and reset the hinges inside. Otherwise all a thief has to do to gain entry to your home is knock out the hinge pin. 14. You can burglar-proof your glass patio doors by setting a pipe or metal bar in the middle bottom track of the door slide. The pipe should be the same length as the track, it will stop the door sliding. 15. Replace rotted door frames with new, solid wood.
16. It's simple for a thief to break glass panels and then reach in and open a doorknob from the inside. A door with glass panels should ideally be replaced, or secured with deadbolts that can only be opened with a key. Don’t leave keys in the locks of doors or windows.
17. Protect your windows with one or more good locks. When installing window locks, drip some solder on the screw heads. It will stop a burglar from unscrewing the lock after cutting a small hole in the windowpane.
18. Take out some insurance, as I said before, if you are unlucky enough to be targeted by a professional burglar, there is every chance that they will succeed. It is well worth covering your possessions for this. Just make sure you follow all of the precautions necessary as lots of insurers won’t pay out if you have failed to secure your property properly. Hope this helps to keep you all stay safe! Written by Eileen Callear

Brookfields demo home opens with carpets offer
BUY one of Bromford’s feature-packed shared ownership homes in Shrewsbury and you’ll get yet another reason to celebrate − free fitted carpets.
All you have to do to qualify is complete your purchase of a two-bed Brookfields house − all built by our award-winning site manager and his team − by the end of February. This great offer for first-time buyers and other people who can't afford to buy on the open market coincides with the January launch of the new demonstration home off Bagley Drive. Buyers can call Bromford Homes on 0845 60 10 878 to arrange a viewing - and check out the first-rate build quality and long list of features that come as standard.
It's also a great opportunity to find out how you can get onto the property ladder in this desirable Shropshire town for as little as £60,750 through Bromford’s popular part-buy, part-rent deal − also known as shared ownership − and a deposit that could be just £3,038 with a 95% mortgage. That's enough to buy a typical 45% share of a Brookfields home with two double bedrooms, gas-fired central heating, downstairs cloakroom, fitted kitchen with oven, hob and extractor fan, and several other great features.
It all adds up to an exceptional chance to get onto the property ladder for less than it costs to rent from a private landlord, according to Bromford Homes Head of Sales Alan Bradley, and he urges first-time buyers to be quick or miss out.
Free Carpets Offer on Selected Homes
"We've already secured our first two reservations here at Brookfields and now the demo home is open we expect local first-time buyers will start to snap them up," says Alan.
"My message to them is simple − come along, look around to check out the features, layout and build quality, and find out how little it can cost to have one just like it. It's a truly affordable option for would-be buyers on lower incomes who feel locked out of the property market and are probably renting from private landlords − part of what's now known as Generation Rent − or living at home with their folks." To find out more about Brookfields, shared ownership and Bromford’s special carpets incentive call 0845 60 10878 or register your interest online at www.bromfordhomes.co.uk
