BIKE4LIFE FEST 2018 SHREWSBURY – COSFORD 22ND APRIL 2018 Bike4Life Fest is set to return on Sunday 22 April with over 3,000 bikers and enthusiasts expected at the biggest biking 1672 in the Midlands. The Ride Out will start at Meole Brace, Shrewsbury and then head over to RAF Cosford. Midlands Air Ambulance Charity’s Bike4Life Ride Out and Festival is one of the biggest biker events in the country, attracting over 12,000 bikers. Starting from Meole Brace in Shrewsbury, the Ride Out takes you on a 23 mile route to RAF Cosford, home to the Bike4Life Festival.

Shrewsbury Chiquito, Shrewsbury is one of our favourite restaurants to visit, with its modern décor, comfortable seating, friendly staff and a new menu on offer we knew we were in for a Saturday night treat. We put on our branded sombreros which are dotted around the restaurant and got into the Mexican spirit for the evening.

We had come to sample the tantalising brand new menu and of course some of the many amazing cocktails they offer too.

Chiquitos is famously known for its extensive cocktail range from classics like the Mojito to the Pornstar Martini or for the drivers there are mocktails which are fabulous. Eileen went for her favourite mocktail - the Ginger Beer Mock-jito and the rest of us kicked things off with a Raspberry Rum Collins, a Berry Sling and a Fruity Passion Fruit Mojito – and as it was before 8pm we enjoyed the bonus 2-1 offer on cocktails! The cocktails went down almost too well, they were bursting with flavour and each had its very own individual ‘wow factor’ and this made for a great start to the evening.

We scanned the menus and collectively decided to try the street food options, which you just have to try – it is such a great idea, as you can enjoy a little bit of everything. Eileen and Stephan chose to share some Halloumi Bites, Chorizo and Sweet Potato Croquettes and Habanero Mushrooms. Ashleigh and I decided to also try the Halloumi Bites, Chorizo and Sweet Potato Croquettes but for our final choice we had the Chicken, Chorizo and Sweetcorn Quesadilla bites. We all unanimously agreed that the Halloumi Bites and Croquettes were amazing, perfectly cooked and full of freshness and flavour – they come served on a generous helping of jalapeño jelly which is sweet and tangy amazing. Eileen barely got a look in as Stephan tucked into the Habanero Mushrooms which he really loved the juicy mushrooms in hot habanero and tomato, oozing with melted mozzarella – a real winner. Our Quesadilla bites were bursting with flavour – a brilliant choice.

We were close to bursting beneath our sombreros, but the desserts are too good to miss out on, for Eileen some delicious Churros, drenched in cinnamon sugar with chocolate to dip into and for Ashleigh the Golden Nugget Cheesecake; a soft creamy cheesecake filled with chocolate honeycomb pieces and chopped with chocolate coated nuggets - served with fresh strawberries and chocolate sauce.

They went down very well. Stephan and I decided the ultimate dessert was the Mexican Mess, a special take on Eton Mess; Churros, chocolate brownie, chocolate sauce, strawberry pieces, raspberry ripple ice cream and strawberry yoghurt topped with cream and served in a hat shaped cinnamon tortilla basket. We both looked at each other in amazement as we feasted our eyes upon them- the quality doesn’t get lost even with the vast array of textures and flavours which work incredible well together.

From the moment you walk in to Chiquito Shrewsbury, Mags and the rest of the team give a warm welcome, and brilliant service.

This added to the lively atmosphere, fantastic food and fabulous cocktails, come together to make for a terrific experience – Salud Chiquitos!

More cocktails flowed (it was still before 8pm- which was a winner) – this time Amaretto Sours, and more Mojitos and Berry Slings. The Amaretto Sour- a personal favourite of mine, with the Luxardo Amaretto shaken with lemon juice, egg whites and sugar – simply divine. The main courses were met with enthusiasm, for my main course I had The Ultimate Fajita; grilled chicken breast with pulled pork and juicy tender steak on a sizzling skillet. This was sensational with peppers and onions sizzling away under the variety of meat, all cooked to perfection. This was one of my favourite dishes of all time - accompanied with cheese, sour cream, jalapenos and not forgetting the soft wraps to top it off.

Ashleigh chose Chicken Tacos; three crispy corn tortillas filled with rice, mozzarella, sour cream, pink onions and salsa, which she thoroughly enjoyed. Eileen opted for Chilli and Coriander Salmon; the salmon perfectly marinated and baked, served on a bed of roasted veg and crispy roasted new potatoes with salsa and Stephan went for the Chicken Enchilada; two flour tortillas with rice and jalapeño cheese sauce, baked in the oven and topped with tomato sauce, sour cream and pink onions. We all really enjoyed our main courses, the quality and freshness is quite remarkable with such more choice on the menu – credit to the chefs at Chiquito.

Ideal for runners of all abilities, the Shrewsbury Half Marathon is a friendly road race in a beautiful setting - Sign up now! he Shrewsbury Half Marathon takes place on Sunday 17th June 2018 at 9am. It is ideal for runners of all abilities wanting a professional and friendly road race in a spectacular setting, and attracts runners from the local area as well as plenty from further afield.

A total of 5,000 places are available for this popular half marathon that offers a perfect combination of history and scenery, with the route taking runners through Shrewsbury’s Medieval town centre and some of Shropshire’s most beautiful countryside.

The race starts and finishes at the Shropshire County Show Ground, an impressive 53-acre venue where the race village is also located, offering plenty of activities and entertainment for runners and spectators.

The UKA-accredited course follows the river in the Quarry and continues through the historic town centre, past hundreds of listed buildings and down steep narrow streets, before heading over the English bridge to run a loop of the Kingsland estate. Runners then ‘conquer the Wyle cop’, the UK’s longest row of uninterrupted independent shops, and head out to run the second half of the race in the rolling Shropshire countryside.

A UKRunChat pacing team will be supporting the 2018 Shrewsbury Half Marathon to help runners achieve their target times.

All finishers receive a medal, technical t-shirt and goody bag. Free pre- and post-race massages are also available.

The Shrewsbury Half Marathon takes place as part of a weekend celebration of running which also includes the final 1.1 mile of the Primary Schools Challenge on Saturday 16th June. The event is open to runners aged 4 upwards, and a total of 1,500 places are available. This is a fantastic opportunity for families to get involved in what promises to be a superb weekend of sport and entertainment in Shrewsbury next summer.

BISHOP'S CASTLE WALKING FESTIVAL 2018

Bishop's Castle is a small, medieval, market town surrounded by the wonderful Shropshire Hills AONB near the Welsh border and off the beaten track. It is a very friendly place and one of eight designated 'Walkers are Welome' towns in the county.

The nineteenth walking festival takes place 16th - 20th May and offers a great choice of five walks every day, all beautiful and all guided by local people who know the area.

Walks vary between five and sixteen miles.

They take walkers over wide open hills, though winding valleys and tiny hamlets and past ancient hill forts and there are some amazing views. Walks are friendly and informal and often end with tea or a pint and most cost just £3.00. There are five evening events planned, good accommodation, two breweries, six pubs, numerous cafes and and interesting little town to explore. www.walkingfestival.co.uk

Challenge Yourself -For Hope House

H

ope House are looking for energetic people to sign up to their sporting fundraising events as part of Team Hope House in 2018. The children’s charity are backing a range of events from half marathons, aquathons and triathlons as well as organising their popular annual Cycle Challenge and their brand new Snowdon Trek.

First out of the blocks is Chester Half Marathon and Shrewsbury Aquathon on April 29 followed by various other half marathons including Lake Vyrnwy and North Wales half marathon and the popular Shrewsbury Triathlon.

Challenges are subject to registration fees and minimum sponsorship for each event entered. In return supporters will receive their free Hope House running vest, fundraising pack and support up to and on the day. If supporters have already registered for these events or wish to register for an event not listed, they can still become part of Team Hope House by committing to raise minimum sponsorship.

The first ever Hope House one day Snowdon Trek will take you to the summit of the highest mountain in England and Wales, Mount Snowdon, on Sunday July 1. The trek will follow the most popular route to the summit, the Llanberis Trail, with a team of experienced mountain guides, guiding you along the route at check in points. Registration is £20 plus £100 sponsorship per person (to include free t-shirt).

The annual Hope House Cycle Challenge reaches its 10th anniversary in 2018 and will take place on Sunday August 5. The popular ride will be going back to its original two scenic routes – 56 miles to Lake Vyrnwy and 72 miles to Bala Lake. Cyclists will be treated to a snack stop at a Half Way Feed Station and a delicious home-made feast of cakes and savouries at the end.

Cyclists can register for the early bird price of £25, on the day entry will be available at £35.

Every week 3 local families face their biggest fear and their child dies, tragically Hope House can only afford to help 1. It is only with your support that Hope House can be there for every mum, dad, brother and sister who needs them so please challenge yourself in 2018 and help them ensure no family faces the death of a child alone.

Classic DISHES FOR Spring

Rhubarb

& Custard Pie Ingredients 375g Pack of Dessert Pastry 450g Rhubarb - Cut Into Small Slices 2 Tbsp Caster Sugar Juice 1 Orange For e Custard 150ml Double Cream 150ml Milk 1 Vanilla Pod, Halved 3 Free Range Eggs 85g Caster Sugar Zest of 1 Orange

Halloumi & Veg Skewers Ingredients 225g Lighter Halloumi, Cubed 2 Red Peppers -Cut Into Bite-Size Pieces 8-10 Small Shallots, Peeled Baby Plum Tomatos 2 Tbsp Freshly Squeezed Lemon Juice 60Ml Olive Oil Chopped Fresh Mint

Method

1 - Spear the halloumi, peppers, shallots and tomato, alternating each, onto skewers (if using wooden skewers soak them for 30 minutes first to prevent burning). Arrange in a shallow dish and set aside.

2 - Whisk together the dressing ingredients. Drizzle most of the dressing over the skewers and turn to coat. Marinate for 10 minutes.

3 Heat a griddle pan over a medium heat and cook the skewers for 4-5 minutes, then turn and cook for a further 3-4 minutes, until the vegetables start to soften and char around the edges. Remove carefully – and drizzle over the remaining dressing.

Method 1. Heat oven to 190C/170C fan/gas 5. Roll out the pastry to around the thickness of £1 coin and place in a 23cm tart tin.

Cut a round of baking paper bigger than the tin and place in the tin with baking beans on top. Bake for 15 mins, then remove the beans and bake for a further 10-15 mins until lightly golden. Remove the tart from the oven and turn the oven down to 160C/140C fan/gas 3.

2. Prepare the filling whilst the tart bakes. Simply heat the rhubarb, caster sugar and orange juice gently in a small pan for 8-10 mins until softened. Remove from the heat and leave to cool slightly while you prepare the custard.

3. Heat the cream, milk and vanilla pod in a small pan and bringing to the boil. Whisk the eggs and sugar in a separate bowl. When the cream mix reaches boiling point, pour it over the eggs while still whisking, then pour the mix through a sieve into a jug and add the orange zest.

4. Once the tart case is cooked, layer the rhubarb over the bottom of the case and pour the custard on top. Place the tart in the oven and cook for 30-35 mins until the custard is just set. Remove from the oven and leave to cool completely before cutting into slices.

We currently also hold the world record for a Women's Social and Political Union (Suffragettes) Hunger Strike medal sold at auction, being that of Mary Aldham (aka Mary Wood) who slashed the portrait of Henry James at the Royal Academy Exhibition in 1914, and caused a riot. We sold her medal and various personal effects on behalf of the owner for £23,450 including premium.

Our highest result for a single item so far was £113,000 (including premium) for the linocut print “Speed Trial” by Cyril Edward Power, at the time a world record for the artist.

Once I got past how unrealistic the book felt, I was able to really dive into the story and enjoy it for what it is. A funny and refreshing chick flick. Our heroine Angela is completely charming and relatable (if a little naïve). What I admired most about her is her courage for getting on that plane and getting as far away from home as possible. Let’s face it, how many times have we all wished we could do just that?

Lindsey Kelk is fantastic at creating atmosphere and provides an amazing introduction for those, like myself, who have never been to the big apple. Her descriptions of famous places such as Times Square and the Empire State building, the many shopping trips to designer stores in the city and her take on American food has me longing to visit New York. In fact, I am currently sat here contemplating booking a ticket as we speak!

I loved seeing how our heroine developed throughout the book. She grew into such a confident person and I know all of you will be rooting for her right through to the very end. I won’t spoil which guy she ends up with, but I was very happy with the choice! inally, can we all just take a moment to appreciate the sexy, fashionable and slightly over the top character that is Jenny? She is the friend that we all long for. Someone who will stand by you through thick and thin yet also tell you when you’re being a complete idiot. I think everyone needs a Jenny in their life.

I Heart New York is a fun and fresh romantic read. It’s definitely one you would take on holiday. What’s even better is, this is the first book in a series of seven. If like me, you love a good chick flick, this book is perfect for you, especially if you’re a fan of Sophie Kinsella’s ‘Shopaholic’ series. I’d rate this book 4/5 stars and I can’t wait to read the next in the series.

Asset First Aid Training burst onto the scene back in 2014 after identifying a massive shortfall in First Aid Training in the Midlands.

Being a team of qualified front line paramedics with over 20 years experience, Directors Tessa Allmark and Edd Davis, were often asked for advice from friends, family and neighbours. ‘We realised we have a lot to offer the general public and businesses alike.’

The Asset team have varying skills including: BSc (Hons) in Paramedic Science, clinical supervision and mentoring as well as front line experience with the Ministry of Defence as a military paramedic, search and rescue and air ambulance. All instructors hold their level 3 qualification in Education and Training, (this is compulsory from 2015) Asset First Aid Training are also OFQUAL approved and accredited by FAA Awards, with this level of expertise, you know you are in safe hands.

As you are likely to be preparing to set about the spring clean in your home, it’s a great time to look at your routine to see if you can make a few changes to help create a healthier environment, so you and your family can breathe more easily. Washing windows, cleaning cupboards and overall freshening up are typical but what can help with seasonal allergies? Read on to discover how to tackle reducing sources of allergies in your home!

Many people suffer from allergies, and while most of us tend to link sneezes caused by pollen to the spring and summer seasons, the fact is lots of allergens lurk in our homes all year round. So, on the threshold allergies busy season, let's take a look around indoors to find some of the problems and see what can be done about them. Symptoms are generally mild but can be more severe for some, mainly they are frustrating like runny noses and itchy eyes, but some allergic reactions can be life threatening. There's no

real cure for allergies, at best we can ease the symptoms and take steps to eliminate the causes.

Bedrooms are top of the list for most household allergens. To lessen the problems avoid storing items under the bed, which collect dust, and remove books and clutter that can attract mould spores. Wash pillows every two weeks and use non-allergenic coverings on mattresses and pillows. Also get your duvet cleaned regularly. Vacuum your mattress frequently, to remove dust mites. Make your bedroom a pet free zone.

Elsewhere in the home, replace carpet with wood flooring and tiles if possible. Don’t use heavy drapes or venetian blinds. Remove houseplants to reduce pollen. Use a vacuum cleaner with an airtight dust container like the Miele Compact C2 Allergy vacuum cleaner or one of the new Dyson range that help reduce allergens. Avoid aerosol based cleaning products – they're easily inhaled.

Dyes and chemical additives can also spark a reaction. If you child has allergies, make sure you tell the school. And if anyone in your family, including yourself, is prone to severe allergic reactions, use a medical identity bracelet to alert others who may be involved in helping or treating you/them.

But there are some effective ways of managing an allergy which will help control symptoms. Antihistamines help stop the reaction occurring and decongestants will help for a blocked nose. Steroid medications like sprays, drops and creams can help reduce redness and swelling caused by an allergic reaction.

Exposure to animals in early life?

Allergic rhinitis, also known as hay fever, is a type of inflammation in the nose which occurs when the immune system overreacts to allergens in the air. It is thought that people who are exposed to animals in their early years are more likely to develop Allergic rhinitis with onset usually occurring between the age of 20-40.

Nut allergy...

Some peanut allergy symptoms can be quite violent and unpleasant. However, they might not represent a serious health risk. Some common symptoms include: swollen lips or tongue. wheezing. diarrhoea. stomach cramps. nausea. vomiting. swollen face or limbs. A GP can arrange testing if a nut allergy is suspected. An NHS allergy clinic will use blood tests or skin prick tests to help make a diagnosis.

t was a misty morning; not quite cold enough for frost. An antipodean used to baking in the heat of breakfast time would have reached for a woolly jumper. As for me, I had spring in my step. I'd already spotted my chariot waiting on the drive. Quick as a camera flash, I got myself ready for action. Skip breakfast? Why not? I knew a place down the road where the coffee was hot and the bacon sizzled on the grille plate. On my way out I scooped up the keys. The Volvo XC60 would soon be divulging its secrets.

My brain began to string together phrases - each word beginning with the letter V. Once started I couldn't stop. 'Vapour veil vexes visibility'... That means it was misty. 'Valorous Volvo vanquishes vagueness'....That means the Volvo stood poised in purposeful fashion ready to do business. 'Verily the vehicle for versatile velocity and verified vitality'....But enough of vain verification! Here was the very latest smooth XC60 - a 4wd, modestly magnificent premium sector SUV replete

with every additive possible at the price of ÂŁ50,230 (With all the extras), resulting in an irresistible promise of many smiles per mile.

This is the car that has just been named 2017-2018 'Car of the Year' - in Japan of all places! One of the safest Volvos ever made, It's fully loaded with new technology and is rated overall safest car in Euro NCAP testing, underlying Volvo's lead in automotive safety.

I can tell you from experience that even if you have nowhere to go, you just have to go somewhere - if only to relish the invigorating attributes of this 'hell of a good car' that will take some beating.

Before setting off I had just enough time to sweep the luxurious interior with admiring eyes before settling down on seats that do not stint when it comes to cosseting in the top notch quality cabin. Soon, thanks to Volvo's Sensus connectivity and entertainment technology, I was enjoying the ultimate

Depressing the throttle uplifted the heart as the 190bhp 2.0 litre diesel, driving through the 8 speed automatic gearbox, encouraged the XC60 to lead me all the way to 130 mph (If I had wanted to and the law had allowed) in smooth and silent fashion even in 'comfort' mode, and in a style as refined as the Duke of Debonair and as irresistible as the Duchess of Desire. In sport mode responsiveness and handling sharpen up even more to make you feel full of the joys of safe performance. Should you wish to venture off-road you select 'off road' and the ride height rises. At the same time you're gifted with thrifty fuel consumption of a claimed 55.4 mpg. It all adds up to a persuasive verdict summed up in one word. Volvo. 'Voluminous Volvo validates virtuous values....' I was at it again.'If only' I thought, 'I were myself as refined as the XC60 then the world would take notice.

Mercedes-Benz celebrated the world premiere of the new AClass in Amsterdam. Against a modern setting with a festival atmosphere more than 450 invited guests experienced the new benchmark in the compact class.

This underlines: the A-Class is more mature and comfortable than ever before. aguar has announced a range of enhancements to its FPACE performance SUV. The 2018 Model Year updates see the debut of Jaguar Land Rover’s latest Ingenium engines and new convenience and safety features introduced.

The changes broaden the appeal of the FPACE with an all-new 250PS four-cylinder Ingenium petrol engine available alongside a high-output 240PS diesel powerplant. In addition, F-PACE benefits from an efficient new E-Performance diesel derivative promising CO2 emissions as low as 126*g/km.

The 250PS 2.0-litre four-cylinder Ingenium petrol engine uses Jaguar Land Rover’s aluminium-intensive design to provide excellent thermal properties and lightweight construction for improved efficiency and enhanced vehicle dynamics.

Extending customer choice is a hallmark of the 2018 Model Year enhancements, alongside comfort and convenience

enhancements. This approach sees the introduction of new multi-adjustable 20way front seats as an option in the F-PACE Portfolio variant, which deliver heightened comfort.

Dual View technology is introduced, allowing the driver and front passenger to view different infotainment displays using the central 10-inch touchscreen display.

The clever InControl technology is available when Touch Pro is specified and allows the driver to follow satellite navigation instructions while the passenger uses the same display to view USB or TV outputs. Jaguar takes pride in the safety credentials of its vehicles and F-PACE features a pair of new technologies for 2018 Model Year.

Forward Traffic Detection is designed to assist when forward visibility is restricted.

Fitted as part of the Surround Camera System, the new safety feature detects items crossing the path of the vehicle and provides a visual warning on the central screen when a potential hazard is detected.

Forward Vehicle Guidance, which is also

part of the Surround Camera System, helps drivers to place the vehicle when completing low speed manoeuvres.

Working in conjunction with the front parking sensors the system provides a visual representation of the vehicle overlaid with wheel projections showing the alignment of the steering. Drivers can see the parking distance reading on the central screen, taking the stress out of tight manoeuvres.

Visual changes are restricted to a revised colour palette and the introduction to the options list of the distinctive contrasts and finishes originally available on the 15spoke 22-inch alloy wheels fitted to the exclusive First Edition models. As of 2018 Model year, S vehicles also feature a dual tone Light Oyster/Ebony interior colourway and a wider range of interior finishes are available across the rest of the range.
