It’s Autumn, already. The last few months have been strange as they seem to have dragged in some ways, but in other ways they have flown by disappearing in the blink of an eye.

Not seeing loved ones was the bit that dragged most for me; my parents, kids and grandkids.

The days between seeing them were like an eternity.

But now, Christmas is only a few short months away, and I cannot wait to spend this year with them.”

t is pretty hard to believe that it is September, and the kids are going back to school, after the holidays. It’s been a tough year, and I think everyone needed a bit of time to rest and recuperate after the stressful months of lockdown.

In this edition we have some great features including some tasty autumn inspired recipes to try, as well as some ideas for making the most of this Halloween. We also have our regular Fashion and Home features with the latest trends for you and your home, and lots, lots more.

With live events back up and running, we see some big names coming to the QE11 Arena in Telford, starting with none other than the legend - Tom Jones on 3rd September and then Olly Murs on 5th September.

Looking out from the White Hart, I could see the small mid-terraced house on Bower Yard where I was born. It’s easy to forget just what a special place Ironbridge is when it has been a daily part of life, but special it is – and it draws in large numbers of tourists from all around the globe. In the heart of Ironbridge, just along the Wharfage you will find the White Hart; an eighteenth century beer house, which has been updated to create a relaxed café bar style feel by day and modern British restaurant and vibrant bar by night, offering bar food, pub lunches, afternoon teas and fine dining – as well as real ales, fine wines and cocktails.

It’s the perfect place to relax and unwind with an intimate 40 seat fine dining restaurant, two thirds of which is on the first floor gallery with large window views over the Severn and beyond. There is a small amount of seating on the ground floor too and outside there is a large courtyard, with plenty of seating; which is the perfect place for relaxing and

watching the world, or just the River Severn go by.

My husband Stephan and I had been looking forward to our visit for a while. We decided to park by the Museum of the River and took a stroll alongside the river. Along the way the heavens opened, but we managed to dart inside into the refuge of the welcoming bar, and were shown to our table by the friendly staff.

The menu which is written weekly and updated daily had a good selection of dishes available. But first, we ordered some drinks; a large Pinot Grigio for Stef and a soft drink for me. The waitress took our order for starters; Char Sui Pork for Stef, and I went for the Teriyaki Salmon and for our main course we ordered Sirloin Steak and Harissa Spiced Lamb. To kick things off we had some fresh sourdough bread, with butter – which is a nice little touch.

The starters arrived quickly. The salmon was a winner – flavourful and juicy – the sweetness of the hoisin mixed with the saltiness of the soy sauce, and the added kick from the pickled cucumber was a great combination. Stef was equally as impressed with his pork. Char Sui is the Chinese version of barbecue pork - this was tender, sticky and sweet. Both had the most important ingredients – flavour and balance.

We ordered a couple more drinks. Outside the rain was pounding down, so it felt really comforting to be warm inside, especially as the wine was now flowing, and Stef had developed a rosy glow to his cheeks. The mains followed soon after. Harissa is a hot chilli paste that originated in Tunisia, North Africa. It is commonly used as a dip or marinade, or to add to dishes like stews to add vibrant red colour and a touch of spice. The lamb was cooked perfectly – slightly pink, just as it should be, and the samosa was fabulous; a little parcel packed with flavour, and again the presentation was impeccable. The sirloin was just the ticket, cooked exactly as requested, and the chips were sensational too – I would go so far as to say that they are the best that I have stolen from his plate to date.

There was no way we could miss out on dessert, and with 70% Chocolate Mousse on the menu it sounded too good not to try. It was rich and luxurious, as you’d expect. It was another strong finish in the final week of the Olympics. There was no gold medal up for grabs, but if there had been, it would have definitely been in the running – unlike me as I could now barely move. To sum up simply; you really must eat at the White Hart.

The kitchen team, led by local chef Kate Bradley, take the upmost care to ensure every dish is carefully prepared and beautifully presented, with flavour and balance being the key - whether it’s a relaxed pub lunch or something from the fine dining menu. The food style is best described as modern British with hints of spice and fusion of eastern cuisines. Many ingredients are sourced locally, game in particular and Kate also has a small army of folk that bring in locally foraged goodies – such as wild garlic, berries, greens, and garden vegetables. From the simple to the sublime, the pub lunch menu offers everything from sharing little tapas style dishes, to sandwiches, to full dining. Starters are priced from £7 and main courses from £18. Our bill for two was £69.

There are also comfy rooms available, with premium beds and contemporary styling, if you want to make a night of it.

Busy Wellington welcomes

Wellington has seen a great ‘re-opening’ and has been a hive of activity as restrictions have been carefully lifted – with a number of new businesses opening their doors plus a stream of outdoor live music and events. The action kicked off with the arrival in Wellington Town Square of the famous ‘Back to the Future’ DeLorean car to mark the re-opening of the Orbit, Wellington’s community cinema, who were showing the famous time travel film which appealed to young and old.

Wellington played host to the Wolfruna Harley Davidson chapter who bought their amazing bikes to Wellington, helping to raise funds for the local Blood Bike charity. The hit event, organised by Wellington Rotary, saw the Lord Lieutenant of Shropshire, Anna Turner, arriving in town in style on one of the bikes.

Throughout the summer there have been ‘Sounds in the Square’; a series of Saturday concerts organised by Wellington Town Council and Wellington H2A. Acts have included David Busby, The Telford Steel Band, Three in a Bar jazz band, The Telfordaires Barbershop, The Shropshire Boatmen and the Wellington Brass Band – delighted to be playing together again – and this time to mark the Orbit’s showing of the film ‘Brassed Off”. On top of this, Telford & Wrekin Council held a very successful High Street Celebration event on 10th July and a great Wellington round of ‘Telford’s Got Talent’.

Local Wellington children have been well provided for with six Family Fun Days in the Bowring Park throughout the summer holidays, with Forest schools, Nature Festival, Exotic Zoo, PJ the Showman all funded by Wellington Town Council. Thanks to Shropshire Fire and rescue and our local policing team for their support at these events.

Telford and Wrekin also hosted an outdoor theatre productions of Mr Stink and Peter Rabbit, whilst adults were entertained by an outdoor production of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’.

Wellington Market has been buzzing as its new Food Quarter opened, with unique independent ‘foodie’ offerings to cater to every taste. Hundreds of people enjoyed the first ever late night opening of the market which The Market Company hope to continue these as a regular fixture on the last Saturday of each month. In addition, a pop up Youth Market has opened, where young entrepreneurs can trial their business idea.

August saw the first free screenings of ‘Big Fish’ funded by Wellington Town Council for the over 60’s at The Orbit. Each of the three showings were at full capacity and included a film, hot drink and homemade cake. Thank you to all who attended.

Half Term fun in Wellington

Youngsters will be able to follow a pumpkin trail and find letters to solve a riddle in Wellington in October Half Term.

Few who have visited Wellington since the lockdown ended will have failed to miss the new planters located in the Market Square, with trees returning to the town centre, banners welcoming shoppers back, bunting galore and fun ‘Welly Boots’ strung across Crown Street. In initiatives worked on collaboratively between Love Wellington, Wellington Town Council and Telford & Wrekin Council and funded by the Marches LEP, these are all measures designed to give us all a lift as we ‘build back better’ post pandemic.

The Great Wellington Pumpkin Trail, organised by Love Wellington, will see carved pumpkins displayed in shop windows. Children aged 12 and under are invited to collect a trail map from The Wellington Orbit, find the pumpkins displaying a hidden letter and solve the puzzle. Those participating can then claim their special Halloween treat from The Orbit.

Wellington Orbit’s Cults and Classics Cinema night has been running since October 2020 and has already shown some great classics such as Cinema Paradiso, The Ladykillers and The Long Good Friday. The screenings are driven by suggestions from the general public and endorsed by the Orbit’s volunteer film group.

Ray Hughes, a Director at Wellington Orbit explained:

Telford’s only Independent cinema, Wellington Orbit have been awarded funds by Films Hub Midlands through the National Lottery to continue their series of cults and classic film showings through to March 2022.

Film Hub Midlands support people to watch, show, and make films in the Midlands and are also part of the British Film Institute Film Audience Network.

Andy Rae from Films Hub Midlands commented "Thanks to the support from the National Lottery, we’re delighted to be able to support Wellington Orbit to bring a broad range of programming to their audiences, and engage with their community."

Taking place on the second Saturday of September annually, World First Aid Day falls on 11th September 2021, an annual campaign introduced in 2000 by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Cross Crescent Societies (IFCR) to promote the importance of first aid training for the prevention of injuries and to help saving lives.

World First Aid Day looks to highlight the importance of basic first aid knowledge and believe this knowledge and information should be available to everyone. Receiving First Aid quickly in emergency can save lives in everyday and crisis situations, Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is one of the lifesaving clinical aspects that can mean the difference between life and death, delayed CPR during a cardiac arrest often results in a poor outcome. For every minute without CPR, survival rates from cardiac arrest decreases by 7– 10%.

Burns and scolding occur regularly within the domestic home. Burns and scolds can be very minor but in other circumstances burns can be life threatening and need emergency First Aid. If you need to give first aid for a burn or scold you’ll need to cool the burn as quickly as possible.

Removing any clothing, being mindful to not apply any creams, THE THREE P’S lotions or sprays to the area.

Attending a first aid course will PRESERVE LIFE teach you how to treat many types of burns from chemical PREVENT FURTHER INJURY burns to friction burns; with PROMOTE RECOVERY added knowledge in basic first aid training you can make a difference to the outcome before the person receives full medical treatment.

Choking is the fourth leading cause of unintentional death, choking causes suffocation and obstruction of the airwaves if not treated immediately. First Aid for choking uses a technique called the Heimlich manoeuvre; they are abdominal thrusts that lift your diaphragm and expel air from your lungs. If someone is choking and they have an obstruction in their airway the Heimlich Manoeuvre can expel the object causing the obstruction and therefore save the casualties life.

Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction that can occur after an insect sting or

First Aid training will give you the confidence and skills to effectively respond with confidence.

To help with this, UK's No.1 online tutoring specialists MyTutor have compiled three tried-and-tested techniques to manage procrastination, prioritise tasks and tackle their most dreaded subjects head-on.

1. The Eisenhower Matrix (to decide what to do when)

A lengthy list of homework can be daunting for any child. This is a simple way to work out which tasks are urgent, which are important, and which can wait.

All you need is to create a simple grid of four boxes on a sheet of paper, like this: Whatever falls into the urgent and important box should be done first – though the aim is to complete everything while it’s important but not (yet) urgent. Any items that are not urgent and not important, consider putting to one side.

When the Eisenhower Matrix is used in business, urgent tasks that are not deemed important are usually “delegated” i.e. you get someone else to do it!

Since you can’t get anyone to do your child's homework for them (sorry!), they probably won’t need to use this box for school revision, however it might be helpful to question whether something that falls into this box actually need to be done (and no, that doesn’t mean your child can put house chores or their least favourite subject in there!).

This matrix can be a great tool to teach your child how to prioritise their various tasks while taking away some of the panic they might be feeling when they've got 20 things to study and don’t know where to start.

2. The Pomodoro Technique (to beat procrastination)

This one sounds a little fancy, but in fact “pomodoro” is simply Italian for tomato. It’s also a common shape for a kitchen timer! Neither of those things have anything to do with your child's study however - and you don’t need a tomato-shaped timer to try this technique (although a timer that’s not your phone is a good idea to help you shut off distractions). One of our favourite learning experts, Barbara Oakley, recommends this process as a way to bust procrastination and completely focus on any given task. Here’s a handy infographic that illustrates the process!

The main goal of this technique is to shut off distractions and allocate specific periods of time for highly-focussed study, but an equally important aspect of this technique is teaching your child how to manage their wandering thoughts, as well as the importance of taking regular short breaks.

The UK's workforce looks considerably different to how it did a year ago. With 750,000 jobs lost, the pandemic has decimated job security across many sectors.

Unfortunately there is no doubt that the hospitality and entertainment sectors have been some of the hardest hit, but data from LinkedIn suggests that now, some months after the first wave of job losses, the demand for white-collar workers is declining and causing a shortage in jobs for these professions.

Whilst the job rate for workers in transport has risen by 18% with delivery drivers among the most popular new jobs, IT and software hires are down 9%, and the rate of new jobs in media is down by 17%. It seems office jobs are now lacking the job security they once had as the pandemic has called for a rise in blue-collar workers.

The nation’s children are now more mindful than ever of their university and career prospects. Having witnessed periods of furlough or even unemployment in their parents and others around them, this has undoubtedly prompted students to rethink their long term university selection and career progression.

New data from leading EdTech platform MyTutor has revealed that 18% of Brits have considered a job in the trades due the pandemic, so it's very possible that university applications this year will see a big decline as students prioritise skill based jobs and apprenticeships over higher education.

The best way for a teen to find a career that suits them is if they work it out themselves. As a parent though, you can help a huge amount by asking the right questions and encouraging them to get thinking and looking.

Ryan says that “asking a teen what they want to do in the future is like asking them to think of a colour that doesn’t exist”. In other words – you can’t know what you’ll enjoy if you don’t know what’s out there. If your teen doesn’t know

what they want to do, a good first step is seeing what jobs are out there and testing their gut reaction. To get started, the National Careers Service lists hundreds of jobs and tells you what they’re like and how you can get there.

2. Help them think about what they enjoy doing (and what they don’t)

Rather than trying to find a job to aim for and then working out the path to get there, starting with the skills and activities your teen enjoys can make it much easier to find what they’ll really love. As a parent, asking them what they enjoy the most at school, after school, on the weekends, and highlight particular skills that are involved in those roles can help them realise what they could be good at professionally. The Skills Builder website is a great free resource for helping teens with this.

3. Talk about it with them

Having an ongoing open conversation about their career planning is the best way to help them. Teens often don’t even realise what their strengths are, and telling them what you think they’re good at.

Rather than searching for a really specific role that they’d like to do in the future, ask your teen to have a think about what problems they see in the world and care about solving. This can help them connect their passions to groups of professions, and then can narrow down from there based on skills they have and ones they’d like to work on.

5. Listen to what they’ve got planned

One of the most helpful things you can do as a parent is really listen to what they’ve got planned – or what they’re not sure about. Instead of pushing them towards a particular path, you can help by encouraging them to develop an independent approach. Exploring their interests by talking about it with them, sharing resources and showing them different qualification types that are out there will set your teen on the best path to discovering the career path that’s right for them.

6. Direct them to resources available to them

As a parent, you don’t need to become a careers expert yourself. What you can do though, whatever your expertise, is push them in the direction of resources available to them: their school guidance teachers, online tutors and the big range of free online resources that are out there. For starters, have a look at the National Careers Service and the iCould website.

7. Help them evaluate opportunities

When looking at career opportunities – whether it’s work experience, apprenticeships, school subject choices, universities or even degrees – teens often don’t know how to weigh up their options. Here you can really help by asking probing questions to help them evaluate and work out what to go for. This can involve writing down with them the pros and cons of different options, including a bit of online research.

For work experience, you can also help them look out for the things that will make an opportunity really valuable – will they get 1-1 support from people in the workplace? Will they be given the chance to learn about the company? By helping them research and make decisions through open discussions, you’re also setting them up well to work things out themselves in the future.

LET’S EAT. Pumpkin Recipes...

From savoury soups to sweet pies, there are plenty of ways to enjoy this tasty golden squash.

Here are two of my favourite pumpkin recipes, which are absolutely great for Autumn time.

Pumpkin & Carrot soup is delicious, warming and easy to make. It’s perfect for Autumnas it is hearty and comforting throughout the colder months, and it’s very tasty. Or you can try this Roast Pumpkin with Tomato and Garlic - which is another simple, and tasty way to enjoy pumpkin, or other squash.

THE INGREDIENTS

Serves 6-8

1 large onion, chopped

2 carrots, peeled and chopped 2 garlic cloves 1 bay leaf

25g/1oz unsalted butter 2 tbsp olive oil

1 medium pumpkin (prepared weight about 850g/1lb 14oz) deseeded and roughly chopped 1 medium-sized floury potato, such as Maris Piper, roughly chopped

1 litre/1¾ pint vegetable or chicken stock, a little extra may be needed 100ml/3½fl oz double cream 3 tbsp pumpkin seeds

salt and freshly ground black pepper

Interesting Fact In a 100-gram amount, raw pumpkin provides 110 KJ or 26 calories of food energy and is an excellent source of provitamin A beta-carotene and vitamin A. Vitamin C is present in moderate amount. Pumpkin is 92% water, 6.5% carbohydrate, 0.1% fat and 1% protein.

Roasted Pumpkin...

Ingredients

1 pumpkin about 1 Kg 16 cherry tomatoes

3 cloves garlic chopped

1 red onion peeled and chopped into quarters Olive Oil

Sea Salt & freshly ground black pepper Method: Preheat the oven to 200ºC / 420ºF. Peel the pumpkin and cut into slices. Remove the seeds. Place pumpkin, cherry tomatoes, red onion and garlic into a large & sturdy roasting tray. Drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and black pepper.

Bake in the oven for about 30 to 45 minutes or until the pumpkin is soft and also tinged brown at the edges. Serve as a side dish.

Method...

1) Heat the butter and half the olive oil in a large pan, then fry the onion, carrots, garlic, bay leaf on a low–medium heat for about 10 minutes until the vegetables are softened.

2) Add the squash and potato and cook for a further 2–3 minutes, then pour in the stock, and season well - bring to the boil. Gently simmer, with the pan lid rested (with a gap) and continue to cook for around 40 minutes until the squash is really tender.

3) Remove the bay leaf and blend the soup until smooth using a blender (stick or tabletop).

4) Add the cream and a little more stock if the soup is too thick. Season to taste, adding more salt and pepper as required.

5) Meanwhile, heat the remaining oil in a frying pan over a medium heat and add the pumpkin seeds and fry quickly until the seeds start to pop. Remove from the pan. Serve in soup bowls and finish with a swirl of cream and a few toasted pumpkin seeds.

HALLOWEEN It’s that time of year when pumpkin sales go through the roof, horror movies sell out at the cinema, and everyone is seemingly dressed up as spooky characters heading out to play trick or treat with their neighbours. Traditionally Halloween is of a Celtic origin, the traditions started with the ancient Celtic celebration of Samhain which took place on 1st November, Halloween was known as Hallows Eve which was celebrated the night before on 31st October where people would set bonfires and dress up in scary costumes to ward off ghosts.

Halloween has evolved over time and now we celebrate with trick-or-treating, apple bobbing, pumpkin carving and parties. Here are some ideas for you to ensure you have the best Halloween ever.

This is a great trend, and perfect for if you have a few spare dress-ups in the back off your little ones wardrobes. Halloween doesn’t have to be costly; upcycling items already within the home can make great savings.

Pumpkin Picking and Carving

Pumpkin Carving originates from Ireland, many years ago people started to carve demonic faces into turnips or other vegetables to scare away Jack’s wondering soul. An American trend that has slowly made its way to the UK is the pumpkin patch; the kids will love a visit to the local pumpkin patch.

Whilst your there why not spend some welldeserved family time carving your hand picked pumpkins. We are very lucky to have a number of local establishments that hold annual pumpkin picking events giving you a great day out.

Sticky toffee apples

Now it would not be Halloween without a few Sticky Toffee Apples, this tradition originates from the Northern Hemisphere to mark the apple harvest, this is definitely not a new trend but it’s certainly not a dying one either! The best thing about sticky toffee apples, they are not just for children!

Why not mix it up with treat apples and trick apples?

Add glitter and a bit off jazz to the treat apples and maybe a hidden layer of tomato ketchup or mustard under that sweet layer of toffee for a sneaky trick on your friends or family. Either way they will look fab on a platter if you are hosting this Halloween.

With restrictions no longer there’s a lot of catching up to do, nearly two years’ worth of celebrations missed with family and friends. If you have a celebration coming up there will be no doubt that you and your loved ones will really want to push the boat out.

Cocktails are a fantastic way to celebrate any celebration and making them can be so much fun too. Why not get the girls round for an evening of cocktail making and catching up.

The more the merrier.

STRAWBERRY DAIQUIRI Probably one of the nation’s favourites, the strawberry Daiquiri is refreshing, typically served frozen. You can pick to add alcohol or opt alcohol free making it a great choice for the non-drinkers in your party also.

1. Start by blending the strawberries and straining through a sieve to reduce the amount of seeds.

2. Add your blended strawberries back into the blender with the ice and blend until smooth 3. Add the lime and juice and sugar syrup into the blender and blend for 30 seconds.

4. Serve in a cocktail glass and garnish with a strawberry and slice of lime.

Serves 4

THE INGREDIENTS 1000g fresh strawberries 400g ice

200ml rum

1 juiced lime

3 tbsp sugar syrup

How to store: If you pre make strawberry daiquiri be sure to store it in the freezer to keep fresh for up to 7 days. To serve after freezing bring to room temperature for 10-15 minutes before serving and garnishing.

MARTINI The Martini is a classic cocktail, although it does not look fancy it is a famous favourite; paired with a few olives or twist of lemon and you are onto a winner with any cocktail evening.

THE INGREDIENTS Ice

60ml vodka or gin

1-2 tbsp of dry vermouth

Olives or lemon peel (or both if you prefer!) to garnish your Martini

MOJITO The Mojito is a cocktail consisting of sweet, citrus and minty flavours and best served on the rocks, Mojito is probably the most well-known rum based cocktail. Although there are many different methods to creating a fantastic Mojito we just love this one.

1. Stir the Ice, chosen spirit and vermouth in a glass or if you prefer shake in a cocktail shaker.

2. Prepare your Martini glass and add an olive or two for garnish and pour your Martini mix into the glass.

Don’t forget your lemon twist.

THE INGREDIENTS 6-7 fresh lime 5 mint sprigs Ice

4 tbsp sugar

375ml rum

600ml sparkling water 1. Slice each lime into six equal chunks and add them to a pitcher, crush the lime with the back of a spoon until all of the juices are out then add the sugar.

Full sleeves

Especially puff, or bishop sleeves, on blouses, dresses and knits, keep things fun and feminine, and look great when combined with Edwardian-style ruffles or a pussybow tie neck.

Shoulder pads are everywhere

Whether subtle, or not-so-subtle - on t-shirts, sweat tops, knits and shirts, as well as jackets and blazers.

Denim

Including jeans, shirts, jackets, shackets, dresses and puffers - anything at all. The dominant washes are dark (indigo) and medium-light vintage washes. The new shapes are mom, full, straight, or flared. Mid and highwaisted styles remain the favoured trend.

Denim-on-denim is also on-trend for styling purposes.

GO BOLD Go bold. Patterns such as checks (bold or classic), dark background florals, paisley, and animal prints galore are still around. Team with a chunky boot for an ultra-cool look, that will be suitable whatever the weather this Autumn. Add a leather or denim jacket and you’re all set!

IN THE BAG The Tote is the perfect bag for this Autumn. Black and Brown are the go to colours, but there is an array of more colourful options if you feel a bit bolder. You can fit in all the essentials, keys, phone, hand sanitizer and masks, and there will still be plenty of space for everything else. Yoga kit, change of shoes, or a trip to the farmer’s market - not a problem. It may be worth making an investment in a slightly more expensive one.

LOW HEELS Luckily for our feet (and ankles) flat and lowheeled footwear remains the dominant trend!

Trainers, especially white ones, are still very much on-trend, regardless of the rest of the outfit, as they go with dresses and suits too!

This month, the UK’s oldest remaining teddy bear manufacturer will celebrate the 100th birthday of Edward, Christopher Robin’s muchloved childhood bear who became the inspiration for Winnie the Pooh. .

Purchased from Harrods, London, Edward Bear was given to Christopher Robin by his mother Daphne as a first birthday present on 21 August 1921.

Daphne’s husband and Christopher’s father, AA Milne, was so enamoured by the partnership he witnessed between a boy and his bear, that he began to write stories about their journey through life together - and the stories of Winnie the Pooh were born.

Now a century later, an adorable quartet of Edward bears created by Merrythought is charming a new generation of children and adults across the world.

To celebrate this special bear’s 100th birthday this year, Merrythought is also giving away a free commemorative gold-plated keyring with the purchase of every original 18in Edward bear, until the end of 2021.

Originally created by Farnell in 1921, Edward Bear was brought to life again for the 2017 Goodbye Christopher Robin film after Merrythought, which owns the Farnell brand, was asked to recreate the bear that featured throughout the award-winning film.

It has seen the Shropshire-based firm play its own part in the ongoing legacy of Winnie the Pooh, and the enduring stories

of friendship which have connected people across the generations.

With deep knowledge in their fields, these nutrition and diet experts unpack what nutrition actually is, while providing tools so readers can discover what wellness means to them.

With their desire to overhaul diet culture and breakdown the facts, Sophie and Bari have provided their top 10 things people usually don’t know about nutrition: 1. Fat doesn’t make you fat.

It’s estimated one third of our energy intake should come from fat, more so from unsaturated fat sources, like nuts, seeds and avocados, but saturated too. Saturated fats are usually found in animal products and are good to include as part of a well-balanced diet. Many people don’t include enough fats in their diet, particularly fatty acids which are often referred to as omega-3s.

2. You don’t have to count calories to be healthy.

Overall, your intake should consist of highquality protein, healthy fats, and whole-grain carbohydrates with plenty of fruit and vegetables. There’s no counting (macros or calories) involved, and there are definitely no restrictions.

3. Gluten is just a protein. You don’t have to eliminate it to improve your health.

Only 0.5% of the population medically require a gluten free diet. It’s important to know gluten is just a protein found in wheat – it’s not toxic and does not lead to adverse health effects. Basically, gluten-free is not synonymous with healthy.

4. Cheat meals can create an unhealthy relationship with food. If you feel the need to cheat on your eating style, it’s not sustainable.

Incorporating flexibility into your meals will allow you to skip out on the guilt when you eat something considered as a ‘cheat’ snack or meal.

5. Your kidneys & liver will kindly detox your body for you - no need for lemon water and celery juice.

Ensuring fruit and vegetables are being consumed regularly is imperative because they provide essential vitamins and minerals linked to improved health. No food or food substance actually has the ability to detox or cleanse the body. Hurrah for livers and kidneys!

6. Smoothies are more nutritious than juices - don’t strip your fruit and vegetables of fibre!

Removing the pulp removes the fibre! And if juices or smoothies aren’t enjoyed, consuming the whole fruit provides more nutritional impact.

7. Carbs don’t cause weight gain. In fact, fruit, vegetables, and dairy products break down into carbohydrates as well.

It is thought the brain uses 20% of all energy needed by the body and the glucose from carbohydrate-containing foods provides adequate fuel for the brain to function properly. Good sources for carbs include breads, whole grains, starchy vegetables (potatoes, butternut squash, parsnips and peas, for example.) and fruits.

8. Hunger signals are a good thing - don’t ignore them. When your body needs fuel, it will let you know.

Diets encourage us to ignore hunger when in fact these instincts are really positive and important to embrace. If you override those hunger pangs and restrict food, your body is likely to react with the urgency to binge. We need to be able to tune in to our hunger signals so we can respond.

9. Digestion isn’t dictated by the time of day. Your body will not digest nor store food differently at 6:01

Our digestive systems work just as hard in the morning as they do throughout the day!

10. Increasing your intake of plant-based foods is not just beneficial for the environment. It also enhances your overall health.

According to Public Health England (2018), only 31% of adults, 32% of people aged 65074 years old and a mere 8% of teenagers meet the 5 A Day recommendation for fruit and veg consumption. Eating more fruit and veg has been shown to lower blood pressure, maintain a healthy heart, help prevent Type-2 Diabetes, decrease the rick of cancer and so much more.

Whether you’re a complete beginner to exercise or an avid gym-goer, shifting stubborn body fat is challenging.

Whilst losing fat and toning up is a fitness goal for lots of people, many don’t know how to alter their workout routine and overall lifestyle to maximise fat loss in a healthy way. To help those looking to shed fat and slim down, Steven Virtue, Fitness Development Manager at Total Fitness, shares his expert insights for burning fat effectively.

Debunking Fat Loss Myths

Before establishing what will help you to burn stubborn fat, it is important to debunk several common myths surrounding fat loss. First and foremost, you cannot spot reduce fat. Although some parts of your body may take longer than others to slim down, depending on factors such as body shape and composition, if you workout to lose fat then you will lose fat across your entire body. You can focus your weight training on building certain muscles so that they appear particularly defined once fat is lost, however it is not possible to lose fat in one body part by exercising that specific area alone.

Furthermore, whilst exercise is undeniably important and offers many fantastic benefits to our overall health, research shows us that losing fat cannot be achieved by exercise alone.

You cannot ‘out-train’ a bad diet and increasing your level of exercise whilst still eating junk food will not facilitate fat loss.

Therefore, it is essential to create a diet plan and exercise routine that compliment one another.

Top Tip 1: Pick Up the Weights

Whilst you may be tempted to focus solely on cardio-based workouts when trying to shift stubborn fat, combining aerobic exercises with strength training has been shown to be particularly effective for losing body fat. Adding resistance to your workout with weight training can help the body preserve fat-free mass, which has been shown to increase the number of calories your body burns whilst resting. Consistent weight training, that is safe yet challenging for your body, will also help you to build lean muscle – this, combined with the fat loss, helps to create a more toned and sculpted physique.

Top Tip 2: Incorporate HIIT into Workout Routine

High Intensity Interval Training, or HIIT for short, is a fantastic form of exercise to incorporate into your fitness routine. Not only is HIIT a great way to boost your mood, but research shows that the increased metabolic rate, caused by strenuous and high intensity exercise, can last up to 38 hours, meaning your body will burn significantly more calories in a resting state. HIIT, particularly the longer circuits or more complex combinations, can be intimidating to beginners. However, there are simple and short HIIT exercises that you can start with: squats, sit ups,

burpees and mountain climbers are all fantastic exercises to try for 30 second intervals with a 20 second rest.

Top Tip 3: Adjust Your Diet

As mentioned, your diet is fundamental to fat loss. In fact, the latest research suggests that 80% of your fat loss is dependent on a good diet, which shows why many people struggle to lose fat despite frequent exercise.[1] If your goal is to lose fat, then you need to be in a calorie deficit – this is when you consume slightly fewer calories than you are burning which in turn makes your body tap into the stored body fat for extra energy.

To ensure you are still consuming the nutrients your body needs whilst in a calorie deficit, it’s a good idea to work with a Personal Trainer to create a healthy and balanced diet plan.

Top Tip 4: Increase Activity Outside of the Gym

Whilst a sweaty gym session is great for burning calories, having a more active lifestyle outside of the gym will also promote fat loss whilst improving your overall health. Increase your daily activity levels with simple lifestyle changes: avoid driving short distances and try walking instead, use stairs instead of lifts, or take up hobbies that involve movement, such as climbing or swimming. If you are struggling to stay motivated to be more active in day-to-day life, then combine this with socialising and seeing loved ones. For example, you could suggest swapping your next afternoon in the pub for a trip to a beautiful nature spot where you can enjoy a long walk and picnic.

Top Tip 5: Allow Time for Rest

When trying to meet fitness goals, it can be tempting to try to push your body to its limits with a rigorous and relentless training schedule. However, this is not the most effective way to lose body fat or maintain a healthy exercise routine. Too much vigorous exercise without enough recovery days can lead to overtraining which actually causes your body to store more fat, due to an increase in the stress hormone cortisol. Listen to how your body feels and what it needs - if you feel particularly lethargic or achy then vigorous exercise is probably not the best idea. Instead, consider an activity that will allow you to rest whilst also benefiting your mood, such as reading or meditation. Sleep is also crucial to the fat burning process aim for at least 7 hours of quality sleep per night and ensure that you have an optimum environment for falling into a deep state of sleep.

So there you have it, five top tips to help you shed stubborn fat in a healthy and effective way.

It is estimated that 200-500 million people worldwide use meditation as a way to help with stress or a mental health disorders. Guided meditation has many health benefits; it is thought that guided meditation can improve anxiety levels by 60%. Meditation is also thought to help insomnia suffers reduce their wake time by a huge 50%.

Take up a new hobby

Taking up a new hobby can help your mental wellbeing, not only will a new hobby take your focus away from the negative feelings and give you something to focus on but also meeting new people with a shared interest can help socially and mentally. Social isolation is a leading cause of some mental health issues normally affecting the older generation but it can cause anyone a negative impact on their mental health if they are isolated from human interaction.

What can cause Mental Health Disorders?

Genetics: If your family carry a history of certain mental health disorders it may make it more likely for you to develop an issue. It's thought that certain conditions can be passed down through generations.

The exact way this happens, though, isn't clear.

Life events: Even positive things in life could make you anxious or depressed.

Changes include: • A new job • Loss of employment or income • Marriage or divorce • Bereavement • Retirement or social isolation • Having a baby

Substance Abuse: A high percentage of people who abuse drugs or alcohol can later develop mental health disorders.

Death or loss: Sadness and grief are normal reactions. Sometimes, though, such big life event can bring serious mental health disruptions, like thoughts of suicide, depression or feelings of worthlessness.

Abuse: Physical, sexual, or emotional abuse can bring on mental health disorders.

Medications: Certain medications can cause temporary side effects such as depression or anxiety. If this happens talk to your doctor as may be able to change your medication.

Don’t make excuses...

If you are suffering from any mental health issues, don’t delay. Often talking about your feeling can feel intimidating adding to stressful feelings however, after you have opened up to your feelings this will feel like a weight has been lifted. You could start off by confiding in a trusted friend or family member but it may be easier for you to a trained medical professional. Sometimes talking to a stranger is the better option; it is always down to the individual.

Looked out of the window today? By the distressed denim of Jeremiah, 'tis a grim sight! When the weather's not behaving the spirits droop. And then there's the little matter of the post-covid 'economy', rolling on downhill ever faster and looming like an empty oil drum.

But what's this? What can I see parked outside on the mansion drive? Just the car that's needed to bring a little ruddy glow of jollity into our post-pandemic pit of despair, that's what. A car that's as bright as a daisy meadow, but rather quicker to respond to the throttle. A car that says hello to the young at heart of all ages. A car that's lively, quirky, cute and charismatic.

Say hello to the £14, 750 Fiat 500 Lounge 1.0 litre Hybrid - a three door hatch powered by a 70 bhp 999cc 3 cylinder turbo petrol engine lightly assisted by a tiny battery that offers an extra push for starting off or accelerating. You don't drive on electric alone. It's just there for when the need arises.

Then it releases recovered energy from braking etc.. There's a manual gearbox with well chosen ratios including an 'overdrive' sixth gear to let you get the best from the lively petrol engine for nippiness and then for cruising in sixth - which it does well even on a motorway. It's capable of near 105 mph and really does return more than the claimed 53.3 mpg. Near 60 mpg was easily achieved by your lead booted correspondent.

With light and nimble handling, it's a car to zip about in that's as much fun as a Mini or Fiesta. The engine is fabulous and the turbo boost gives a linear surge as you floor the throttle. Not since I stampeded the farmers cattle whilst escaping from Borstal and running for my life have I enjoyed nippiness so much.

Four sit acceptably comfortably for short hops but even sardines would find it a challenge on a long journey. As stylish inside as it is outside, the 'fun' intent is clear.

Good ergonomics, an excellent driving position and comfortable and supportive seats to hold you secure as you explore the limits of the dynamic ability. It's a safe and secure car that you can drive like a roller skate - convincing yourself that you are doing Mach 1 when you are only subsonic.

You have to hand it to Fiat. They bamboozle expectations with the aplomb of a pantheon of spin bowlers. They seem to have a knack for knowing just how far to push common sense and how far to twirl the tenets of taste. Not for them the sombre orthodoxies of the "We Design a Car to Function Properly. Full Stop" school. Fiat go beyond the stop. And it's

that one-stop-beyond philosophy that tickles the fancy; that tempts that tentative yearning for some plain and simple fun.

Fiat 500s are more popular than ever now, with Brits adoring Italian 'eleganza'. Who wouldn't want to face the brand new day with a 500 hybrid waiting to be driven? Better by far than going to work on an egg, or in a big smelly bus.

Epic Blue was the colour of this vivacious lifestyle chaser. Fiery Vesuvian Red would have been my choice. Yes, it's just a bit unserious, but when did light heartedness ever hurt? If your heart is not yet an encrusted, dull-thumping thing a 500 ride will buck you up every time.

All electronic essentials that might have the old colonels and retired seamstresses frothing at the folly of modern

ways are there aplenty. Being long in the tooth also, I just wanted to listen to the purposeful hum of the delightful engine.

The 500 Hybrid is very much a modern car with fine manners so you can take it on the best tarmac - yet it's so streetwise that it thinks nothing of dashing to the chippy on potholed side streets. When I picked up my new assistant, Angelina Corleone (For it was she)
