HELLO...

It’s been a tough time, over the last year and a half. We have been through a very strange, and testing time. Even though it’s been hard, this period of prolonged isolation and uncertainty has given us a new perspective on life. The things we may have taken for granted previously, are now all the more important - perhaps this is one of the few ‘silver linings’ of storm Covid.”

End  Restrions

We are finally getting back to normality - well, the new kind of it anyway. With actual live events, holidays and even family get togethers back on the cards, things are looking good for the future...

W

e haven’t had a ‘What’s On section in the magazine for a while - mainly since there have not been any live events for months and months. But now, finally, we are moving away from the lockdowns, and looking forward to getting back out and about. In Telford, we are incredibly lucky to have so many great places to visit, right on our doorstep. We have the Ski Centre, Ice Rink, Theatre, Cinema, Hoo Farm (with Dinosaurs!), the Exotic Zoo, Telford Town Park, Sky Reach High Ropes, Foot-golf, Horsehay Village Golf, Local Nature Reserves galore and the world heritage site of Ironbridge - and that’s just a few of them! The Telford Balloon Fiesta returns on the August Bank Holiday weekend, which will be fabulous.

6 Telford Lifestyle Magazine

Our towns are also beginning to get back into the swing of things, with some brilliant High Street shops, selling everything you could need, from fresh baked bread to handmade bath bombs and everything in-between. We also have the return of eating and drinking out. I did really miss going for a nice meal, and a cheeky cocktail or two. Telford & Wrekin Council offer free swimming for under 18’s at their Leisure Centres, which should help keep the kids happy this summer. There is now an opportunity to start to make the most of what our great town has to offer. Let’s make the most of every day!

TELFORD BALLOON FIESTA Telford Town Park

Get ready to be blown away as the Telford Balloon Fiesta is set to return to Telford Town Park this August Bank Holiday weekend 2021. Last year’s ‘secret balloon event’ cheered the residents of Telford and Wrekin up with balloons launching from an undisclosed location. As part of its plans for recovery, Telford & Wrekin Council very much hope that Telford’s Balloon Fiesta will be part of a summer festival weekend spanning the August Bank Holiday from 27 to 30 August, where, weather permitting, there will be several opportunities to see balloons take off over the weekend. The event, like many other regional events will be subject to government guidelines at the time.

The Review

Riverside Dining The Water Rat, Ironbridge

Let’s do riverside dining!

It has been a while since we had visited The Water Rat, Ironbridge; in fact last time we were there it was called The Meadow Inn. Since then, it has been renamed and there has been a renovation undertaken by the new management, which has created a light and spacious restaurant area indoors, a large outdoor deck and extra seating in the garden, which stretches down towards the River Severn. The doors reopened back in May, serving great food from midday to 9pm (Sundays 12-6pm), both indoors and outdoors, supported by the new garden bar. All dishes are made fresh and on site, covering all the best bases and styles; from grown up pub dining in the evenings or small dish tapas style eating, through to rustic sandwiches and real ales by the river or even a hearty pub lunch on the decking. We were made very welcome, and shown to our table in the restaurant (we had to wear our masks

until seated) – situated next to the large windows overlooking the stunning garden area. Starting with drinks we ordered a soft drink for me as the designated driver and a large glass of Pinot for my husband. We ordered 3 ‘little dishes’ to kick things off – Bang Bang Chicken with Satay Sauce and Pickled Cucumber Salad, King Prawns with Lemon and Garlic Butter, and Crispy Duck Leg Croquette with Hoisin Sauce. After some deliberation, for the main course I went for the Pan Fried Sea bass with Ratatouille, Parmentier Potatoes and Pesto, and Stef decided on the Beef Bourguignon with Roast Garlic Mash and Root Vegetables. The ‘little dishes’ arrived in no time at all, the friendly waiting staff popped them in the middle of the table ready for us to share. The portions are perfect for sharing. The prawns were plump and

freshness. The bar is an ideal place to unwind and relax any time of the day, serving a range of drinks including regional Real Ales, Guinness, Ciders and Lagers on tap and in bottles, plus a wide range of Spirits and reasonably priced Wines.

fresh, and the chicken had a spicy kick. The duck was my favourite, a combination of the sweet hoisin, and savoury of the hearty duck – which really hit the spot. A couple more drinks and the main course arrived. I love Sea bass; this delicate white fish has a subtle sweetness which is similar to grouper or cod. The moist flesh is an excellent choice for people with a sensitive palate, that don’t like ‘fishy’ tasting seafood. This was cooked perfectly, and the Ratatouille was really bursting with flavour – superb. The Beef Bourguignon; a classic recipe prepared with braised beef in red wine, with pearl onions, button mushrooms and flavoured with pork fat lardons, was delicious. The tender beef, sweet onions, and garlic mash were the perfect partners. The roast parsnips and carrots finished the dish off brilliantly.

There are also rooms offering ‘B&B’ which are located in a Georgian House next to the Inn – which not only guarantees peace and quiet, but means that bedrooms and their ensuite bathrooms are all large and airy with high ceilings. Decor is modern, bathrooms are sparkling and showers are powerful. Eat, drink, stay - The Water Rat has it all.

We couldn’t resist dessert – it had been so long since we had dined out, so we rounded off the evening with Pear and Ginger Crumble with Crème Anglaise and a Chocolate Brownie with Chocolate Sauce and Salted Caramel Ice Cream. A good brownie is decided by attention to detail, ingredient proportions and baking time, and this one was just right - going down a storm. Crumble dates back to World War 2 rationing, when it was created as an economical alternative to a pastry crust. Since then it has really caught on and is still a firm favourite with many of us. This pear and ginger crumble was great, the ginger giving it a new dimension in flavour, which was right up my street. At The Water Rat you can relax and enjoy traditional seasonal pub food, from menus that celebrate the seasons, focusing on value and

Love Wellington says ‘Thank you’ for Shopping in Wellington....

As part of our way of saying 'thank you' to those who shop in Wellington, Love Wellington is currently running a campaign to thank and reward those who are ‘loyal to local’. Shoppers have been busy sending pictures of themselves making a local purchase in Wellington to be entered into a draw to win £25 to spend in Wellington. Each entry also gets featured on the Love Wellington Facebook page – which is great publicity boost for all the local shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants too.

Wrekin Rowers The ‘Wrekin Rowers’ will be bringing their boat ‘ClearCourse’ to their hometown of Wellington on Saturday 18th September. The 4 strong team made up of Wellington siblings Gary and Stuart Richards, Stuart Shepherd and Martin Skehan all live within sight of the Wrekin and are preparing to row 3000 miles in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge race in December 2021.

The winner for the May draw was Lee Plummer who can be seen here introducing friends to the new Food Quarter in Wellington Market – as Lee says “We ordered Lee Plummer something from each vendor to introducing friends spread the love out.” to the new Food Quarter in Wellington Market

The rowers, who all have compelling reasons behind their chosen charities are aiming to raise £100,000 for RNIB and The Severn Hospice through this amazing endeavour. They will be available all day, together with their sponsors ClearCourse, to answer questions from the public and rattle a bucket or two. It’s hoped that The Wellington Orbit will be showing a topical film ‘Through Hell and High Water’ - Ben Fogle and James Cracknell's film of their own Atlantic crossing that day and that the Severn Hospice Shop and other retailers, indeed the whole town, will get involved with this rowing themed day in Wellington’s Town Square.

BIG ADVENTURES in the heart of...

. . . d r o f  T 

Top picks for the summer...

Visit a Local Nature Reserve - We have a number of LNR’s in Telford & Wrekin:

Exploring Telford We have all been living very different lives since the pandemic hit. More and more of us have had our worlds reduced down to our homes, and a small local area. During this time we have discovered so many wonderful places - right on our doorstep, here in Telford. Many people think of Telford as a new town, which technically it is, but it is a new town made up of a number of old, historic towns, which have amazing histories. The town was put together in the 1960s and 1970s as a new town on previously industrial and agricultural land and towns. Like other planned towns of the era, Telford was created from the merger of other settlements and towns, most notably the towns of Wellington, Oakengates, Madeley and Dawley, some of which had urban developments as far back as the 13th century, and of course there is the World Heritage site of Ironbridge that sits on the River Severn. You don’t have to drive to discover some of the hidden gems of Telford, which you may be surprised to find are within walking or cycling distance from where you live. The Wrekin is one of the more popular spots to visit - mainly because of the reward of the best view in the county when you reach the top, but we also have some really beautiful tracks and trails, woodlands and nature reserves and some brilliant parks too.

www.telfordlifestyle.co.uk

18 Telford Lifestyle Magazine

Apley Woods, Dawley Pools & Pit Mounds, Dothill Nature Reserve, Granville Country Park, Ketley Paddock Mound, Lilleshall Hill, Limekiln Woods, Lodge Field, Madeley Pit Mounds, Madebrook Pools & Stirchley Dingle, Telford Town Park, The Beeches and The Ercall & Lawrences Hill. That is enough to keep you going all through the summer!

Look to the stars... The dark night skies above The Wrekin make it a fabulous location for stargazers. It is actually designated by Dark Sky Discovery Partnership as a Milky Way Class rated site, meaning that the skies are dark enough to see the Milky Way with the naked eye. Seeing the Milky Way is a magical experience. You don’t need special equipment, as you can see lots with the naked eye, but binoculars or a telescope can bring a new dimensions to the stargazing experience. Don’t forget to take some photos too! Dark Sky Discovery Sites must meet basic standards. Typically they are at least 100 square metres in size –large enough to accommodate 30 stargazers, with good public access, and firm ground for wheelchairs.

Scotch Beef, lentil and beetroot burgers

INGREDIENTS

• 400g Scotch Beef PGI mince • 1 finely diced onion • 1 can of cooked green lentils, drained • 2 raw or pickled beetroot, grated • 1 tbsp sundried tomato paste • 1 egg, beaten • 200g baby spinach leaves • 4 brioche buns • Salt and pepper, pinch • 100g pickled gherkins, sliced • 2 tomatoes, sliced

(tip: if you can’t find sundried tomato paste try mixing 1tsp of smoked paprika with 1tbsp tomato paste)

• 1 red onion, sliced • Rapeseed oil METHOD

1. Mix the grated beetroot, onion, beef mince, tomato paste and lentils in a bowl, season and mix well. 2. Add the beaten egg and mix again. 3. Divide into four even sized balls then shape into patties (tip: these can be made ahead then stored in the fridge!) 4. To cook on the BBQ, brush each burger lightly with rapeseed oil and lay onto the preheated grill 5. Don’t be tempted to move them for 3-4 minutes. The burgers will stick and tear if you do. 6. Nudge them with the tongs gently and if they move they are ready to turn 7. Flip over and cook for a further 3-4 minutes 8. Serve in brioche buns with sliced tomato, red onion, gherkins and baby spinach

OFF THE GRID...

Locions!

New research has found Britain’s mobile phone coverage ‘black spots’ Rosedale Abbey in North Yorkshire and Isle of Man are the biggest tourist attractions on the list. Three signal black spots found in the Shetland Islands Scottish border town Ettrick and Alwinton in Northumberland also found to have no mobile phone coverage were also an off the grid preferred location. Isle of Canna, Scotland

A new study into mobile phone coverage across the UK conducted by Affordable Mobiles, winners of the Uswitch Mobile Reseller of the Year award, has revealed several go-to signal ‘blackspots’ across the country for those who want to fully unwind. The findings, that use data from two of the UK’s largest network providers suggest the ultimate destinations for those who want to spend quality time together as a family, take a break from work or to recharge the human battery by reducing screen time.

Rosedale Abbey

Located in the heart of the North Yorkshire Moors, Rosedale Abbey offers stunning views of one of England’s treasured national parks as well as ancient ruins to explore. Ettrick

Situated on the Scottish border, Ettrick is a peaceful place to escape from the stresses of modern life with many hiking trails, tranquil fishing hotspots and cycling routes to discover on your visit. Alwinton

Lying just at the head of the Coquet valley, the Northumberland village Alwinton contains beautiful riverside walking trails that historically were frequented by cattle drovers, shepherds, pedlars and whiskey smugglers. Isle of Man

This Irish sea island is packed with historic castles, rugged coastline walks and a mountainous centre giving tourists tonnes to explore. Douglas (the island’s capital) also contains the Manx Museum which traces the Isle of Man’s Viking and Celtic routes, making for a very educational visit. Isle of Canna

Under the care of the National Trust for Scotland, the Isle of Canna is one of the most preserved and naturally beautiful places in the UK. The whole island is a mere 4.3 miles long and 1 mile wide, providing an excellent haven to truly switch off.

“What is interesting is how few blackspots there actually are across the country, which reflects just how much the investment put in by major UK networks is paying off. “I feel that if we were to conduct the same research in 10 years’ time, it wouldn’t come as a shock to find zero blackspots in the UK, as networks are continuously investing time and money into improving their service.”

View from Rosedale Abbey on the North Yorks Moors, UK

Foula

Sticking within the Shetlands islands, Foula (or as the Scots say, Foola) is another extremely remote and small location again providing a great getaway spot. The Island is also famed for being the setting of the 1937 classic British film The Edge of The World. Stonybreck

Stonybreck is the largest settlement on Fair Isle (well known for its bird observatory) located towards the south of the Island. There are some stunning views to be taken in simply by walking around the picturesque settlement and the surrounding island setting. Jessica Canning, mobile expert at Affordable Mobiles commented on the research, “It comes as no surprise that a number of the really rural blackspots are located in the Shetland Islands, with that being the furthest north that the UK spans.

The full scale analysis of the UK’s major cities signal ratings and coverage also reveals the best and worst cities in the UK based on average phone signal rating. The research looks at both the overall coverage and the coverage for individual devices in various staycation hotspots around the UK. Scoring was based on 4G and 5G signal, as well as the coverage rating on a number of the latest best-selling handsets from two of the nationals largest network providers.

Isle of Man landscape view with wall of Peel Castle

London, Birmingham, Belfast and Cardiff ranked amongst the cities in first place for the best signal rating, all scoring 4.2 out of 5 based on general 5G and 4G signal as well as the coverage rating on a number of the latest best-selling handsets from two of the nation's largest network providers. High heels are falling out of fashion. Sales of dress shoes, including stilettos, dropped down by 71% in the second quarter of 2020. Have you already considered a topic idea about this drastic change? The rise of comfort shoes

The decline of high heels can be attributed to the rise of comfort shoes. For example, last year Lyst, a global fashion search engine, said that searches for Birkenstock sandals went up by 225%. Sneakers, slippers, and slides have also been on the rise during the pandemic. The risk of injuries

High heels are known to be harmful to the feet. According to Vytautas Kimtys, expert surgeon at Nordorthopaedics Clinic, a leading orthopedic surgery clinic for medical tourists from the UK in Lithuania, constant wearing of high heels can damage the bone structure and even result in injuries like hallux valgus (bunion) and hammered toe. Feminist statement

Clothing choices are not only about fashion or comfort, but also about making a statement. Traditionally, high heels have been seen as a way to express women's sexuality or power, but the fourth wave of feminism aims to change stereotypical standards, including the glamorization of wearing high heels. www.riverisland.com 35 GBP

Coast Living...

We have all missed visiting the coast, over the long lockdown periods. It’s great that we are now able to get back to the seaside in Wales and down south, but this popular home trend allows us to have a coastal vibe - all year round! With coastal themes for every room in your home, you can create a relaxed seaside look, which you can enjoy every day...

1. Beach House Razor clams, mussel shells, winkles and a whelk shell sit against a beautiful fan of indigo seaweed. It has shades of blue, from deep washy indigos, silver greys, through to sky blues with a pop of soft pink, this collection of shells reminds me of a Cornish summer. Choose from two base colours, ink blue or off white for this beautiful lampshade. Rockpool Off White Lampshade - Cream Cornwall £48

2. Wicker and Rope Nothing soothes the soul quite like being by the sea, but with holidays uncertain this year you can at least bring the beach to you with this seaside tablescape. Tranquility is the order of the day, with a beige linen runner and warm white pillar candles creating a calming focal point. Real British oysters, white clam shells and resin star fish can be artfully placed to introduce a hint of the sea.

According to the data, the young are leading the way, with the perfect age to get into a traditional hobby found to be 24. Almost three quarters (72 percent) of the under thirties polled said they’d rather spend a weekday evening doing their favourite hobby than on a zoom call with friends. Traditional ideas about which gender should do which hobby no longer apply, as 45 percent claim that hobbies seen as ‘female’ - such as knitting, jam making, or sewing are now popular for men too. The study also found that 54 percent of Britons say home hobbies offer a welcome retreat away from screens and technology, while half (50 percent) say they are a great distraction to life’s everyday stresses.

IS A DREAM COME TRUE! My name is Edward Scott and from a young age I’ve always loved exotic animals. I have owned frogs since the age of nine and always dreamed of owning a pet shop, and that’s exactly what I’ve done. At 18 years old I’m the owner of Edzotics, which is a recently opened exotic pet shop here in Telford. This means I’m one of the youngest pet shop owners in the country - if not the youngest. The shop is located in the Oakengates shopping mall, on the high street. We have a range of animals from reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates as well as a large variety of live food and supplies to keep your reptile happy. All livestock in store is available to purchase and we have many animal specific set-ups ready to go. If you are looking for something that isn’t in store and it can be sourced from my suppliers, then it will be in the shop as soon as possible for you to collect.

Edzotics only opened just before Christmas, after finally being licensed to sell animals. The shop had a great first few days and then the lockdown came again. I was allowed to stay open as an essential supplier to provide people with their pet food and supplies, but footfall dropped massively so business was slow at times. Now the high streets are busy again, people can come and look for their ideal pet to keep them company at home. For me the care of the animals is the most important thing at Edzotics, and all the set-ups on display are most favourable for your pet’s wellbeing. The more natural and realistic the set-up looks, the happier and healthier the animal will be. The thing I want to do to make Edzotics different is to be able to engage with customers at any time of the day, to ensure their questions are answered and that the customer is happy with their new pet.

Social Fatigue - Normal Life_Full Page Bleed New 18/05/2021 16:13 Page 1

Social Fatigue & Navigating The Return of

'Norm Le' Have you been feeling particularly drained, emotionally and physically over the last few months (try the year!)? Lost your mojo, focus and productivity? Getting irritated by nothing and everything, swinging from fairly content and quite callous and before you know it, bored out of your mind?

Have you heard of social fatigue? It’s something commonly described by introverts when we reach the limit of socialising. Although not everyone will identify nor usually class themselves as an introvert, you might still be feeling the effects of social fatigue - and might well be thinking “how am I socially fatigued - we’ve not seen anyone for a year?!” and that is quite possibly exactly why many of us are. Firstly, we’ve not seen friends and family much this year. We’ve faced the challenges that life and the pandemic have thrown at us without our support networks which means our minds have had a little (possibly a lot) more turmoil to cope with than usual and on our own, depleting our resources.

Secondly, we’ve not had much in-person or face-to-face interaction with anyone at all. No pubs, shops, gyms, salons, baby groups, the list goes on, to see another face in real life, to work out around other people, to smile and nod at strangers. This means that when we are seeing people as restrictions ease, our resources for socialising are depleting quicker than usual because we’ve adjusted to a quiet, solitary life around restrictions.

Thirdly, we’re worrying about the return to more relaxed lockdown rules, on top of this, because it’s more change to wrap our heads around. And on top of that, we are now having more faceto-face interaction and seeing more people while worrying about doing all these

things - which is causing us to over-fill our ‘social cups’, leading to us feeling fried by 7pm after a Saturday afternoon garden party that, previously, we’d still be boogying at till the small hours of the morning!

Now if this sounds familiar (pandemic-caused or not) here are three tips for easing back into normality without feeling exhausted by the prospect, never mind the actual doing!

1. Take your time - if you’re one of the many not sprinting back to the pub, not desperately phoning your hairdresser trying to squeeze an appointment it, not raring to get back to shopping centres - that’s cool. If you are, enjoy the freedom (but within guidelines). It doesn’t really matter what everyone else is doing as long as you are comfortable and content with your pace, try to let go of FOMO (fear of missing out) because there’ll be other events, meetups, bottomless brunches to get to when you feel more ready - and can sit through them in peace and joy, rather than discomfort and a longing to be back on your sofa with a cuppa.

2. Hold your boundaries - be firm with yourself and others around your boundaries, some of us may be more than happy to go for a picnic in the park but not quite ready for the bustle of the beer garden. It can be challenging to do, it might annoy a few people but you’ve spent the last year dealing with a pandemic so go easy on yourself, join friends when you want and politely decline, rearrange or suggest a more suitable option you’ll all enjoy and feel comfortable with. Don’t just go because someone said “it’ll be great” or “you’ll be fine once you get there” - you might, they’re probably not wrong but we don’t need to push ourselves for anyone else.

3. Make it your normal - we’re worried by the return to normality because we’re not really sure what it entails nor how to navigate it when we do. So make it your own, take back some control for yourself. If that means staying at home more often, or starting a new outdoor hobby for the summer, do what makes you happy and take care of your wellbeing first.

Sleep after lockdown_Full Page Bleed New 18/05/2021 13:23 Page 1

With Lockdown Restrictions Lifting Further, How Will This Affect

Our Sleep...

So, what can we expect the easing of lockdown to do to our sleep?

Firstly, we might feel a lot more exhausted but more wired as we get out and about more. The emotional exhaustion from being out and about more, from doing more physically and adjusting to more social contact. This might mean our body is not quite ready for bed, our mind is racing and even if we do fall asleep, sustaining that sleep through the night might be more difficult. If this is the case, and even if we feel exhausted, we need to make sure we are winding down before sleep.

the early wake ups. To combat this, try and have a conversation with your employer. Due to the pandemic, more and more organisations are open to more flexible work patterns as they have seen how this approach has not impacted on productivity during lockdown. If you are an employer, consider the benefits of allowing your employees to have a work pattern that matches their body’s natural rhythm. Wherever we sit on the sleep type continuum, we can have a work routine that works for us.

Take the hour before sleep time and focus on activities that help us feel relaxed and cooler. A warm bath or shower for the latter, and maybe swapping watching the news or a crime drama, for your favourite comedy series or something trashy. Only go to bed when you are sleepy, sleepy is that feeling when our eyes are drooping and our head starts to nod. If we go to bed and don’t fall asleep within 30 minutes, reset your mind, start again and maybe try listening to something like a spoken word book or a meditation app.

Vivid dreams have been a hallmark of the pandemic and they often worsen when things change, either lockdown’s starting or easing. These dreams are a sign of our brain’s dealing with the stress caused by the COVID crisis as during sleep, the REM stage of sleep acts as an overnight counselling session, where we work through the stresses and strains of the day. So as the changes happen we may experience more dreams but as we get used to more freedom and things opening up they should, hopefully subside.

For some of us, lockdown has actually improved our sleep, particularly if we were more likely to be a bit of a night owl, going to bed later and getting up later. No commute, and more flexible working patterns have allowed owls to have a sleep routine that works for them and they may be dreading the return to work and

During the ebbs and flows of the pandemic our sleep has been impacted, and the message is there might be a short term impact as lockdown eases and it would be incredibly useful to take this time to reassess our sleep, and the patterns of our day and see if we can do more to allow ourselves to get the sleep we need. You can’t beat a healthy heart... More than 14 million adults in the UK have high blood pressure resulting in an increased risk of heart diseases and stroke... Check Your Blood Pressure

One in three people in the UK has high blood pressure (hypertension), however many people are unaware of it as there are usually no symptoms. High blood pressure increases your risk of having a heart attack or stroke. The only way to know if your blood pressure is high is to have it measured. We explain what blood pressure is and provide some tips for keeping your blood pressure healthy. What is high blood pressure?

When blood pressure is measured, two numbers are generated. An ideal blood pressure is below 120/80 millimetres of mercury (mmHg). The first number is the systolic blood pressure (higher number), which is the force at which blood is being pumped around your body. Ideally, this will be below 120. A systolic blood pressure of 140 or more is regarded as high. The second number is the diastolic blood pressure (lower number) which is the pressure when your heart is at rest, in between beats. Ideally this will be 80 or lower. A diastolic reading of 90 or above is regarded as high. The lower your blood pressure, the lower your risk of having a heart attack or stroke. Get your blood pressure checked

The only way to know if your blood pressure is high is to have it checked. Blood pressure checks are quick and easy, and it could be lifesaving. Adults aged 40 years or over should aim to have their blood pressure checked at least every five years. You can ask your GP to check your blood pressure, or you may be able to have your blood pressure checked with your local pharmacy. You could also consider investing in a home blood pressure monitor.

BLOOD PRESSURE

Page 58 & 59 - Back to Fitness_Double Page Editorial 10/05/2021 14:10 Page 2

What can I do to maintain a healthy blood pressure?

• Maintain a healthy weight by eating a healthy diet and getting plenty of physical activity. • Reduce the amount of salt in your diet to no more than 6g a day (1 teaspoon). Look at the amount of salt on food labels and avoid choosing snacks that are high in salt. • Eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables every day. • Keep your alcohol consumption within the recommended limits of no more than 14 units a week, spread over three or more days. • Aim to do 150 minutes of moderate activity (e.g. brisk walking) or 75 minutes of vigorous activity (e.g. running) each week plus some strengthening activities (e.g. lifting weights) at least twice a week. • Get a good night’s sleep. In the last 10 years, Heart Research UK has funded over £10.2m in medical research in hospitals and universities across the UK, as well as £2.2m on innovative community-based lifestyle projects to improve the heart health of the nation If you’d like to support Heart Research UK’s vital work into the prevention, treatment and cure of heart disease, please visit www.heartresearch.org.uk for inspiration on how you could help

Don’t make excuses If you are over 40 years off age you should have your blood pressure checked every five years regardless of your health status. Low Blood Pressure Low blood pressure is anything less than 90/60mmHg. Normal Blood Pressure Normal blood pressure is 120/80 mmHg

High Blood Pressure High blood pressure is normally based on a reading of 150/90mmHg however, if you are over 80 years old a reading over 140/90mmHg would indecate high blood pressure.

Glowing Summer Skin_Full Page Bleed New 04/06/2021 10:54 Page 1

Expert Tips for Glowing

Summer Skin Expert reveals the secret for glowing skin this summer...

Omega-7 for Dry Skin For very dry skin I love sources of omega-7. It helps to redistribute the moisture in our bodies by nourishing and moisturising us from within. This helps to keep our skin looking and feeling plump and sleek. It can help to reduce redness, irritation, and inflammation which are all symptoms associated with dry skin. Dry skin is also more prone to infections, which omega-7 can help to minimise. Omega-7 also helps to protect our mucous membranes which line areas like our mouth, nose, and eyes.

Comfrey for Mature Skin I love the herbal ingredient Comfrey for aging skin. Comfrey is super moisturising which means it can help to ease the appearance of fine lines, smoothing, strengthening, and invigorating your skin with new life as a result of its array of naturally occurring antioxidants and tannins; helping to brighten your natural complexion. Neem for Sensitive Skin The herbal ingredient Neem is great for calming sensitive or even eczema-prone skin. The naturally occurring, antiinflammatory

properties of Neem seem to make it wonderful at relieving stubborn discomfort or itchiness often associated with dry, sensitive skin. If skin is prone to angrier infections, echinacea within creams can help as a result of this herb’s antimicrobial properties, similar to coconut oil which is my everyday goto. Hyaluronic Acid for Oily Skin Interestingly, even if we suffer from oily skin, this can actually be a sign of underlying dryness as your body is trying hard to overcompensate. One other ingredient that can work well for issues with dryness and even feeling oily, is hyaluronic acid. This ingredient helps to keep the skin hydrated and retains water where it’s needed most. Just watch out for how hyaluronic acid is produced. In some cases, it can come from animal origin which I’d say for people to avoid. Look out for herbal and non-GMO sources instead, such as with some of A.Vogel’s products. Credit: Emma Thornton

It began with the smoke signal. A column of dark smoke beyond the trees bordering my extensive domain. "I wonder what that is?" I thought. Surely not a smokey exhaust. It's possibly the spontaneous combustion of some alternative energy source. Or could it be a pipeful of O'SHAUGHNESSY'S RICH DARK IRISH MIXTURE? Or maybe a millionaire with a conscience burning all his money before adopting sackcloth and evangelical environmentalism. I wasn't kept in suspense for long. Trudging towards me with all the inevitability of a wet day in Wigan was a striking figure of a man. This is a car review not a short story by Tolstoy so I'll not dwell on descriptive details except to say that he was very tall and in matters of girth, almost as wide. He still retained a vestigial Mohican haircut, although it was now greyish compared with the strident cerise of his heyday. He wore a downcast expression. I knew him from old. This was none other than BILLY TALL PINES, former all-in wrestler of repute, now all in: six feet four inches of pure flab and pinkcheeked breathlessness. I greeted him cheerily. "Hello Squire! Could that smoke signal be connected with your arrival here?" "Too right mate" he gasped, pausing after his efforts in order to collect his breath. "My Sinclair C5 has gone up in smoke. It caught fire the moment I sat down on it. "I wonder why" I responded, glancing at his trouser seat which seemed mercifully unscorched. His weight presumably had precipitated some sort of fusion of sub atomic particles, prompting an inferno. I kept this surmise to myself. Can you give me a lift to my health farm in Wolverhampton? I'm booked in for a socially distanced Abyssinian Massage in an hour"

Range Rover Sport D350 HST... Cutting it fine Squire" I said. But you're in luck. I've got the latest Range Rover Sport. A superbly adaptable and luxurious automobile guaranteed to whisk you to Wolverhampton in the time it would take to boil an egg. And an automobile capable like few other motor carriages of making you feel like a king - or should I say in deference to your illustrious past career in the ring, 'Chief' not King. "You can call me what you like, so long as you get me there in time." "Consider it done. Follow me" I replied. I led him to the stable block where, gleaming resplendently in the Spring sunshine was the Range Rover Sport. Red with a black top and cool looking black alloys, it was every inch the business and 'Ready! Aye ready!' for adventure. "Gosh!" exclaimed Billy. "I bet that didn't come cheap. "Not cheap at £85,995 but

certainly cheering to the spirit. Climb aboard and experience true quality." He needed no prompting. Lesser vehicles would have tipped sideways under the weight but the Range Rover Sport is made of sterling stuff as befits a highly specified and accommodating motoring icon. It would take more than the likes of Billy to topple it from its perch. In a jiffy we were strapped in and relishing an interior which poets have described as 'the bee's knees' in luxury. Simply put, the Range Rover Sport delivers motoring in the grand manner. It represents the culmination of a trailblazing career of 4WD 'go anywhere' success offering every adjunct to off-road ability you could name. My model had the outstanding 350bhp 6 cylinder diesel engine ably assisted by a 48 volt mild hybrid system to drive through an 8 speed auto transmission - all capable of giving over 31mpg. Drive

gently and you will even see 40mpg! It's a combination that wonderfully juggles the sometimes contradictory imperatives of grunt, economy and eco-mindfulness. It is a clean, potent and satisfying answer to twenty first century first class motoring. Not only impressive looking, it insists on cosseting occupants in superb comfort. The phrase 'Elegant spaciousness wrapped up in engineering excellence and stylistic accomplishment ' although weighty enough, somehow is insufficient to do it justice. Perhaps a romantic soul perched high on a picturesque peak, where encircling sky stretches imperiously over the ground far below - maybe only such a one could ever possess an inkling of the sublime experience to be savoured within. For the driver it can spring forward like an unknown avatar of transcendental speed up to 140mph. Boy! Does it go! And stop too as suddenly as thought. Nothing

shaking: just braking. And all this performance to be enjoyed within the leather-clad opulence of an interior more luxurious than a score of Pall Mall clubs decked out for decadence. "It is a classy motor" Billy exclaimed. "Better than your Sinclair C5?" I asked. But he wouldn't go that far. He had too many fond memories to commit to a full endorsement. As I dropped him off at the WOLVERHAMPTON ALL-IN WELLBEING CENTRE I sensed his disappointment at having to say goodbye to the Range Rover Sport. He had been forced to submit to the appeal of this knockout motor.

Cyber

Fraud

& online deceptions... By Hatti Suvari

Reports on the increase of cyber fraud and online deceptions have become more frequent since the start of the Covid pandemic. Hatti Suvari, consumer advocate, law expert and Get Legally Speaking podcast host has been drawing attention to this since the first indication these activities were on the rise. As we become more reliant on banks due to the decline in cash usage, banks ought to have a greater responsibility in safeguarding their customers against fraud. Increasing knowledgeable about consumer rights can help put pressure on banks to do the right thing by their users. Financial crime is always rife, but the pandemic has triggered an epidemic of cyber fraud. In its many different forms, from cold calls, text messages to email, there are evermore opportunities to be tricked into giving away personal information. Hatti has three general rules when it comes to scams:

• STOP! – think to consider if this is genuine or if there is any reason you should have doubt • CHALLENGE! – cross-check the

information through other means. Use a search engine to find the number for the organisation in question and ask them if the communication to you is genuine. • PROTECT! – Protect yourself by phoning your bank ASAP. If you are a small business, take pre-emptive protection and get insurance.

If money has been stolen from an account as a result of replying or acting on a message which turns out to be a scam, there are several things you can do.

• Contact your bank – they have fraud teams operating 24 hours a day. If you log the transaction with your bank as a fraudulent payment, the transfer can be blocked and prevented. • Even if you made the payment a couple of days ago, it isn’t the end of the battle. If it has moved from your account to another, your bank can still contact the other bank provider and communicate that it has been reported as fraud. They can then lock it down and freeze the account. Meaning there’s still a chance you could be reimbursed. • Take a hard line with your bank. Although they private organisations, they are obliged by law to help you, albeit to a certain extent. The introduction of the Contingent Reimbursement Model Code, which most banks have opted-in for, means that if you are victim of fraud, banks are likely to have to reimburse you.

TELFORD AWARDED £22.3m from...

d n u F s n w o T

Telford has been awarded £22.3m for projects that will transform the town centre, creating jobs, boosting economic growth and ensuring a bright future for residents and businesses. Telford’s Town Deal Board has successfully bid for the funding from the Government’s Towns Fund. The funding will attract around an additional £30m of investment, creating the foundations for further development. At the heart of the submission was a drive to skill up the local workforce for an increasingly digital world. So the plans for Station Quarter include a digital skills and enterprise hub that will be delivered by Telford College and the University of Wolverhampton and a budding partnership of local businesses. A centre of excellence focused on meeting business need and the next important step towards the town’s future. The development will also introduce town centre living into Telford, with eco-homes included in the plans. The Town Deal Board recognised investing in to our communities is vital to sustained economic growth, so ensuring links between Telford town centre with Oakengates and Wellington was central to the bid. The investment will offer huge potential to these key locations and to the people who live there.

potential. Through targeted development the funding will help to redefine the town’s offer with opportunities for investment and a focus towards encouraging independent ventures and business start-ups. These centres will set a new benchmark for what can be expected from local centres and high streets.

Graham Wynne OBE, chair of the Telford Towns Deal Board, said: “I am so pleased the government has approved our bid for our Towns Fund proposals. This is great news and a result of a lot of hard work by the board and the Telford team. The plans we have put together will have a transformational impact on Telford. They will kickstart our ambitious vision for Station Quarter, alongside the vital investment in to our borough towns.”

Cllr Shaun Davies, leader of Telford & Wrekin Council, added: “This is great news for the town. I want to say a big thank you to the board and our partners who worked brilliantly to make such a compelling case to government. “Our bid was for £25m and we still need to unpick exactly what the government funding will be allocated towards and the implications of the short fall. However, our proposals are so strong and exciting and I’m confident they will allow us to establish a model for regeneration that will benefit some of our most deprived communities. “The future for Telford is bright and this funding is a game-changer as we move together into the next phase of the town’s development.”

Both towns have distinct identities and heritage and wide catchment areas with enormous
