MERRY...

Christmas is only a few weeks away, and I cannot wait to spend this year with my family and friends. For a few years, I haven’t really made a big deal of Christmas. It had been pretty low-key, just really trying to have a rest before work started again. But the lockdown last year really hit me hard, and I vowed to make the very most of the festive period from now on. I can’t wait to make some special memories with my family this year - even if cooking for so many will be an interesting challenge. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas with your loved ones this year too...”

Christmas...

"God never gives someone a gift they are not capable of receiving. If He gives us the gift of Christmas, it is because we all have the ability to understand and receive it."... Pope Francis

C

hristmas this year seems even more special than usual, after last year’s restrictions. This year (fingers crossed) we will be able to come together and celebrate which for most of us will be the best present possible. Time has always been the most valuable gift, but next to this is kindness. After difficult times, many find themselves struggling to manage, and we never know when this situation could happen to us too. An unexpected redundancy, illness or bereavement can change everything. If you are able to, try to give a helping hand to someone in need - donate toys and clothes, or perhaps there is a local foodbank that you could help. This is what Christmas is truly about - Giving something, without the expectation of receiving something back. Even if it is a few minutes of your time, or just a kind word, or a smile!

6 Telford Lifestyle Magazine

The mayhem of shopping for gifts will soon begin, and it is worth remembering that there is a vast selection of local independent shops on the High Street. You can pick up something a little bit different to gift to a loved one, and support local business and jobs too. In this edition we have some great features including some festive inspired recipes to try, as well as some ideas for making the most of this Christmas. We also have our regular Fashion and Home features with the latest trends for you and your home, and lots, lots more... All of the team at Telford Lifestyle Magazine would like to wish you, and your loved ones a very merry Christmas, and a happy, healthy New Year!.

The Review

A famy friendly dining experience The Foresters Arms, Broseley www.forestersarmsbroseley.com

As we sort refuge from the wind and rain on a cool Friday evening we found ourselves warmly welcomed to The Foresters Arms in Broseley, which was recently taken over and given a new lease of life by two local families in July 2021, having already sampled a fabulous breakfast a few weeks prior I was enthusiastic to set my sights on the evening menu; myself and partner were not disappointed. The menu boasted an array of homely dishes and we were completely spoilt for choice. We were swiftly seated in the relaxed and inviting restaurant area. Starting with appetizers, my partner Mitchell was drawn in by the Deep fried crispy brie bites, red onion chutney with a rocket salad; while I couldn’t resist the Chilli pulled pork nachos topped with cheese. Mitchell devoured his appetizer giving it his seal of approval. My Chilli pulled pork nachos were amazing the pulled pork

melted in your mouth, accompanied by salted crisp nachos and jalapenos for that added kick. We all know that nachos are amazing but you could taste the effort put into this dish. Hats off to the chef! Our Appetizers geared us up for our main course. This is where it got tricky for me; as I wanted to try all of them. In the end I whittled it down to a choice between the Slow Braised Lamb Shank or Pan-seared Chicken wrapped in Bacon which came accompanied with Buttered New Potatoes, Seasonal Vegetables & Classic Chasseur Sauce. The Pan-seared Chicken won and I had made the hardest choice of the evening. Mitchell’s choice was not a hard one to make, being a steak lover he instantly chose the 10oz Ribeye Steak with Confit Tomato, grilled Field Mushroom & Skin on Chips which came served with a choice between Brandy & Peppercorn or Blue Cheese Sauce. As our

Brownie with Coffee and Praline Ice Cream and Fresh Strawberries and I once I tucked in there was no guilt on my side for indulging, the brownie was rich and the coffee and praline ice cream really was the cherry on top giving such a satisfying ending to the meal. Mitchell picked out the Chocolate Caramel Shortbread with Carmel Ice Cream; a real treat with a biscuit base accompanied by strawberries the elements of this dish complimented one another leaving his sweet tooth more than satisfied.

mains arrived we couldn’t wait to dig in, my Pan-seared Chicken arrived perfectly presented and the chicken breast was succulent and juicy the chasseur sauce really brought the dish to life. Mitchell was equally impressed with his Ribeye steak served just as he had ordered it was tender and full of flavour coupled with confit tomato and field mushroom it was a real winner. The Foresters Arms really do know how to cook up hearty meals, we were left feeling full and content however; we could not resist pondering over the desserts menu. Having eyes bigger than our bellies I could not ignore the temptation of the Warm Chocolate

We proceeded to take Chloe our host up on the offer of the Friday nights live entertainment in the newly refurbished Willow room and ended our evening with a few cocktails whilst we socialised with other customers enjoying the food, alcohol and entertainment on offer including a juke box and pool table. A really enjoyable evening was had by all. The Foresters Arms also offer buffet menus to cater for all of your needs from weddings, funerals, christenings and birthday parties or you can chose from the set menu. A quiz night is also held every other Wednesday, details can be found on Facebook.

a truly family friendly dining experience.

Remembrance Day Service and Parade Sunday 14th November...

On Sunday 14th November Wellington will remember those fallen by way of a Remembrance Parade and Service. The Parade will leave The Nailor’s Row car park in the centre of Wellington on Sunday 14th November at 10.25am. It will turn right into New Street, march through Market Square and into Church Street, past The Lychgate (in front of All Saints Church) in time for the short (outside) service which will be held on the grassed area in front of All Saints Church. Following the service, at approximately 11.15am, the parade will march—by the same route in reverse—back to Nailor’s Row car park for dismissal at approximately 11.40am. The Mayor will take the salute in the Square as this is done. A small service will also take place at 11am on 11th November in Wellington Market Square to commemorate Armistice Day.

Wellington has claimed the top spot in the town category of the ‘Shropshire’s Outstanding Community’ awards –run by the Shropshire Community Foundation. Wellington shares the first prize with Church Stretton having put in a strong application highlighting the progressive regeneration work taking place in the town, the strong sense of community and the many voluntary organisations which improve the local environment such as the Peace Gardeners, the Friends of Wellington Station and Friends of the Bowring Park. Part of the entry was the physical improvement in the town centre such as the new look market with popular late night openings, as well as improvements in shop facades made possible through the Telford & Wrekin Pride in Your High Street initiative, better cleanliness, stunning hanging baskets, improved CCTV, new planters in the market Square and the fun hanging wellies in Crown Street made possible through Marches LEP funding. Judges complimented the good communication with residents through Love Wellington social media and website, and Wellington Town Council’s newsletter ‘This is Our Wellington’ as well as the many activities and events going on which promote a strong sense of community – the most recent of which was the recent sell out ‘Bond Weekend’ organised and hosted by Wellington Orbit communityrun cinema which saw a red carpet and cocktail reception and an Aston Martin on show, with Wellington Brass Band playing as cinema guests arrived. Judges saw how businesses work well together in Wellington, with many putting on themed events and supporting activities going on the town, such as the recent visit of the Wrekin Rowers, a Pumpkin Trail involving over 20 town centre retailers over October Half Term, as well as the ‘shop local’ campaigns and directories throughout the pandemic.

The awards were presented at a reception hosted by the Shropshire Community Foundation at the Engine House in Ironbridge in late October.

The Regeneration of Wellington... Not so long ago, Wellington was looking rather run-down. It had become known for charity shops and cash converter style shops, and had lost some of it’s pretty market town appeal. The regeneration of Wellington has been on-going for a number of years. The Town Council, along with Telford & Wrekin Council, Wellington Market and many other businesses and community groups have all played major roles in this transformation, and now Wellington is emerging as an exciting hub with independent shops, with so much on offer. The regeneration is set to continue, as Telford & Wrekin Council has announced a package to help bridge a government funding gap that will ensure plans for the continued regeneration of Wellington town centre become a reality. The funding which will build on the success of the ‘Pride in Our High Street’ programme will support revitalising the centre of Wellington with a focus on the Market Square.

extra £1 million into leisure and events to support pandemic recovery...

! e d i s r u o y n #O thinking about one of Telford’s most famous sons, captain Matthew Webb, the first man to swim the English Channel. “In time for the 150th anniversary of the great man’s achievement, we are committing to funding a new pool in the Dawley area so that more people can swim locally. Add this to the extension of our free swimming offer and we should see more people enjoying the benefits of swimming more often.” A new Youth Health & Fitness Membership will also be launched to give young people aged 16-19 access to Telford & Wrekin’s aspirations health and fitness facilities for just £19.99 per month with no minimum term contract or joining fee.

Telford & Wrekin Council will be investing an extra £1 million into leisure and events as a part of a wider £16 million commitment to support the borough to recover from the COVID pandemic. The money is being invested into a range of initiatives to help residents get fit and active, tackle big issues such as loneliness and give a boost to local businesses by bringing people together safely. As part of the investment, from 1 October 2021 all residents under the age of 25 with a Telford Loyalty Card (TLC) will be able to swim for free in council leisure centres across the borough. Plans are also being made to give more people access to a local pool by investing in new swimming facilities in Dawley. Councillor Shaun Davies, Leader of Telford & Wrekin Council said: “We can’t talk about swimming in Telford and Wrekin without

The investment will also go towards delivering more quality events in the borough. Already this year the council’s events team have hosted a number of successful events including music concerts in Telford Town Park, Balloon Fiesta and Armed Forces Day; all whilst following government coronavirus guidance to ensure residents and visitors can enjoy outdoor entertainment whilst keeping safe. The extra investment will see brand new experiences for 2022 as well as the return of family favourites such as Carnival, Big Top and celebrating the Queens Jubilee. Money will also be spent upgrading facilities at Oakengates Theatre @ The Place to ensure there is a quality indoor entertainment on offer locally.

Councillor Eileen Callear, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture and Visitor Economy commented:

“As a council we are choosing to invest in our events and leisure programme to help our residents enjoy life after the worst of the pandemic, but in reality, our investment will have a much greater impact, helping to tackle big issues such as obesity, mental wellbeing and loneliness and supporting local businesses to bounce back by bringing people together safely.” People can find out more about the free swimming offer or new youth membership at their nearest leisure centre. Contact details can be found: www.telfordandwrekinleisure.co.uk The new youth membership will be available to both new and existing members. Ironbridge Gorge

rated No6 in the top 60 UK towns and villages

. . . d r o f  T o #G

Cllr Eileen Callear, Telford & Wrekin Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture and Visitor Economy, said:

“Telford is an extraordinary district, and we are so proud that one of our communities should be voted among the top towns and villages in the UK. For Ironbridge Gorge to achieve this accolade is a testament to the dedication and hard work of the management and staff at its many attractions and to the local retailers and accommodation providers who help create such a positive environment for visitors and locals to eat, stay, drink, shop and enjoy.”

Telford’s Ironbridge Gorge has been hailed by leading consumer organisation Which? and its magazine readers as one of the best destinations in the UK. The top-rated UNESCO World Heritage Site, a historic and vibrant community of more than 3,000 people, was rated sixth in the top 60 UK towns and villages to visit in a Which? Magazine poll. Ironbridge Gorge, under Telford & Wrekin Council’s guardianship, is a flagship cultural destination set along the River Severn, the UK’s longest river. Its globally important world heritage is matched by its natural beauty which can be enjoyed in its woodlands and dingles, waterways, and stunning viewpoints. The destination scored 86, just four percentage points of the top slot – with four-star ratings for the beauty of the landscape, its appealing environment and its peace and tranquillity. But it was its attractions that achieved highest marks from Which? consumers. Ironbridge Gorge is home to some of the finest museums and monuments in the UK including English Heritage’s Iron Bridge and the 52 acre Blists Hill Victorian Town as well as outdoor, artisan and adventure attractions, and its appeal is clear.

www.telfordlifestyle.co.uk

Telford Lifestyle Magazine

“But most importantly it is a tribute to the people who live in Ironbridge Gorge and care for it day in, day out. They have created a warm, welcoming community that brings back visitors year after year. We are looking forward to a great autumn season and welcoming visitors and locals to explore all our extraordinary towns.” “It is not only the richness of its culture and heritage, its wonderful family attractions and its independent shopping that make Ironbridge Gorge a flagship UK town –and that sense of community and the warmth that make it a great place to just be.” Cllr Carolyn Healy, Telford & Wrekin Councillor for Ironbridge Gorge, added:

“We are delighted to have one of our towns here in Telford recognised by Which? – the UK’s leading consumer champion – and thousands of its readers. Designated as one of the very first UNESCO World Heritage Sites, more than 35 years ago, this latest accolade is a result of the continuing work and investment in Ironbridge Gorge making it a jewel in the crown of Telford. While Ironbridge Gorge may be famed the world over for its Industrial heritage, today the destination is also home to some of the UK’s leading artisans and creative communities from teddy bear makers like Merrythought and Tile designers and manufactures like Craven Dunnill to glass makers, bike builders and coracle crafters.” Telford has become a real destination of choice over recent years and not only for local and UK visitors on day trips and short breaks to places like Ironbridge Gorge it is also one of the UK’s leading destinations for business conventions, exhibitions, and cultural events. This recognition for the people of Ironbridge and Telford could not come at a better time, as the destination rolls out its Covid recovery and regrowth plans, welcoming locals and visitors to come and discover for themselves this amazing destination. Top Tips...

TO DECORATE THE PERFECT

Christmas tree...

Decorating your tree is one of the most cherished Christmas traditions. A magical moment to share with loved ones, this Christmas is going to be one to remember! Lights4fun reveals their top tips to make your Christmas tree decorating even more magical than ever before...

It’s always best to begin by wrapping your tree in twinkling lights! With many options available, Lights4fun’s string lights are designed with slim cables in darker colours to camouflage for a discreet finish. Whilst warm white lights are one of the most popular shades, decorate to suit your space with string lights in many different colours. Ensure no spare wires are on display by measuring how many lights you’ll need and then you can get started… Find the end of your lights and begin entwining around from the top of your tree. Follow the wire in tiers as you make your way down the tree, creating an even spread and finishing at the bottom where your lead wire meets the plug. With minimum wire displayed, adjust where you see fit to create a discreet yet super sparkly display. Radiating a magical feeling to all who enter your home, your tree warrants the best of the best! Open up your decorations from previous years and decide which you’d like to use again. Themes change with the years, however a theme of rustic woods and golden hues is a staple as it’s neutral tones pair perfectly with almost any decor! Traditional tones of red, gold and green are a timeless classic whilst a key theme this year is down a more playful route, introducing a palette of baby pink, berry red and deep navy blue. Begin to hang your baubles, smaller sizes to the top with larger to the bottom to even out the weight in your tree. Mix and match decorations, old and new, adding Lights4fun’s illuminated baubles for an extra glow. Introduce character to your display by draping garlands around your tree. Take your gift wrap the extra mile by carefully wrapping in beautiful, bold paper and velvet ribbons. Pop them under the tree, enjoying every glimpse you get of your eye-catching display. Bring your tree to life this Christmas with Lights4fun’s tips! Available at: lights4fun.co.uk

Chipolata Pigs in Blankets... It would not be a Christmas Dinner without a good Pig in Blanket, it is estimated that 130 million pigs in blankets are consumed on the 25th December each year alone. 1. Using Chipolatas of your choice place on a baking tray and cook for 10 minutes in a pre-heated oven at 190 2. Remove the chipolatas and wrap each one in a rasher of smoked bacon (be careful they will be hot) then place them back in the oven for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.

THE INGREDIENTS 10 chipolatas

10 rashers of smoked bacon

Don’t stop there; why not add a few cloves of garlic and a couple of sprigs of thyme to add extra flavour.

2. Start by mixing together the flour and salt in a bowl, beat and add the eggs. Folding the mixture together until smooth, then gradually add the milk. Pour the mix into a jug for easy pouring. 3. Remove the tin from the oven and pour the batter into each hole carefully but as quickly as possible to keep the oil piping. Return the batter to the oven and cook for 25 minutes, or until golden-brow.

THE INGREDIENTS 100g plain flour ¼ tsp salt

3 large eggs 225ml milk 4 tbsp oil

They say that the secret to the best Yorkshire pudding is to ensure that you pre-heat the oil until it is piping hot and don’t open the door.

e Perfect Yorkshire Pudding... Making Christmas that extra special means ditching the frozen Yorkshire puds! You can’t beat a homemade fluffy golden Yorkshire pudding. 1. Preheat the oven to 200c. Add a teaspoon of oil into each hole of a bun/baking tin then place in the oven until the oil is hot. Normally 5-10 minutes, this will give you time to prepare your mixture.

FESTIVE HOME... How nostalgic styling will make Christmas...

! t h g i r b & y merr

Hope and optimism remain at the forefront of this festive period, after an unpredictable time for all we look towards a brighter future and happier times to come. According to Lights4fun, nostalgic decor is a key theme for this Christmas with bright colours & retro shapes taking centre stage. Nosta lg Lights ic Styling fr 4fun om

Lucy Kirk, Creative & Photography Manager at Lights4fun, quotes “Capturing the nostalgia of the season lets us escape for a moment into a simpler and less complicated time, whilst we look forwards to the future with optimism.” Playful decorations featuring shapes such as ribbons and bows capture the joy of the season perfectly and Lights4fun suggests mixing a selection of colourful & vintage accessories as part of your styling. Their FALALA Felt Christmas Garland, is a fun feature for Christmas and looks great paired alongside micro lights to add some seasonal sparkle. To complete the look, scatter an array of baubles of different styles and sizes on tables or mantels as a festive finishing touch. Simple and classic decor also continues to be a favourite for the season, reflecting the charm of Christmas which we all love so dearly. Silvers, golds and festive foliage remain on-trend year after year and Lights4fun’s Champagne TruGlow Pillar Candle Trio is the perfect addition to your interior. They recommend using the candles as a centrepiece for your dining table or simply displaying them on ledges or window sills to introduce a cosy glow to any room.

Bold shades of reds and pinks are also trending this year, with standout decorations making an appearance. Lights4fun suggests opting for a focal point for your display and surrounding this with muted colours and minimalistic accessories. Their Pom Pom Osby Star is a unique and playful take on the traditional festive star and is a great feature to put pride of place on your mantel in your living room or on a shelf in your kitchen. Get nostalgic this Christmas & capture the merriness of the season with your festive styling!

THE

style guide

Autumn/Winter season is always my favourites when it comes to the world of fashion. This year we are back together (hopefully!), for the festive period and looking forward with enthusiasm to sharing our individual style with others... Autumn/Winter fashion season brings comfort and style together in all the major trends. Jeans have loosened up, with the ‘Mom’ jean being extremely popular. Heels are no longer a must for a night out, so you can throw on some boots, or trainers with a dress, dance the night away, and still be fabulous, but comfortable too! Combining a mixture of different fabrics gives outfits a whole new feel, pair sequins and knits, leather and lace and denim with just about anything else, to create an interesting winter outfit.

Autumn/Winter Colours...

Top AW21 colours are Teal, Marine Green, Grey, Browns, Dusky Pink, Brilliant Yellow, Powder Blue and Peach.

Day & Night

Layering your favourite cosy knits with your fancier eveningwear will not only make them far more comfy but it’s also perfect for a versatile daytime option.

Shades of Brown

If bold colours aren't for you and you're into something on the more subtle end of the shade spectrum, try swapping your whites and creams for browns this AW season. Mix your shades and don’t try to add in any other colours to make this trend work to its fullest.

BAGS OF STYLE This stunning leather messenger bag oozes smart sophistication. Crafted in super-soft Italian grained leather and finished in a dreamy shade of teal, this eye-catching leather bag is exceptionally versatile perfect for work and play. 26cm x 30cm x 2cm. Strap Length: 130cm

MIX IT UP For many, winter is more about keeping warm than being stylish. But who says you can’t do both? Wearing the right fabrics will make you look both elegant and will keep you warm during the cold season. A good winter fabric should be strong, warm and natural, but should look amazing too. Try mixing knits and sequins for a glam winter night out orsome leather trousers with a smart wool coat. Left:: Matalan AW21 Womenswear Cream Knit and Gold Sequin Skirt. Green Collared Longline Coat £22 from George. Relaxed jeans from White Stuff

WINTER WILD SIDE Let out your winter wild side with this animal print maxi. Adorned in a classic yet subtle leopard print, this round-necked dress has 3/4 length sleeves and a timeless gathered skirt making your figure look flawless. Pair with your favourite boots and 'shacket' for an autumnal look to take you from desk to dinner! Right: Black Animal Print Gathered Maxi Dress ROMAN ORIGINALS £35

STAY HOME... 4 ways to style your home like an

interior designer

Whether it’s an inspirational home in a glossy magazine or a celebrity’s well-styled house on social media, they often share one thing - the all-important touch of an interior designer. Designers bring beauty and taste to homes they work with, creating luxurious, enviable spaces. Achieving that polished designer feel in the home is completely possible - with just 4 simple rules.

Rebecca Snowden, Interior Style Advisor at Furniture And Choice (FurnitureChoice.co.uk), shares 4 rules to follow, to style your home like an interior designer.

1. Start with a clean monochrome palette A classic monochrome colour palette has an effortlessly elegant quality, with tonal neutrals such as grey and taupe providing a calm, sophisticated feel. The key is to ensure contrast and variety with these tones, creating visual interest and movement.

2. Incorporate glamorous, luxe textures “Punctuate a monochrome look with black accessories and details - this immediately gives the home a stylish, yet grounded feel, as you see in this living room, with the coffee table legs and decorative tray.” A go-to interior design trick is to include luxurious textures in different ways and sections of the room. When paired with a monochrome background, this technique creates a curated, thoughtfully designed home. “Think about the space from top to bottom, and consider how to add textures at every level,” says Rebecca. “This way, you get a cohesive look that also has a sense of understated luxury. In this grey bedroom, we kept it simple when it came to colour but there’s a variety of textures from the rug on the floor, to the velvet pillows and the gold lamps. Together, they create a rich, lush feel.” It is also about looking for furniture and accessories with textural details and contrast. “Velvet is always a good choice for that soft, glamorous look, but having chrome finishing on these dining chairs really takes it to another level. Keep an eye out for moments of detail and contrast, because these small touches can have a big impact.”

3. Style accessories like a designer Much as the right jewelry can complete an outfit, signature accessories can make a home feel unique, personal and expensive. Designers understand this and the key to getting a high-end look with accessories is two fold: firstly, go bold when selecting the right accessories for your home and secondly, make a feature of them to create focus and attention. “Start by considering what you want to highlight and draw attention to,” Rebecca comments. “In this designer dining room, a bold marble mirror offsets an elegant white fireplace mantel, while a stunning orchid centrepiece gives height and drama, pulling your gaze upwards to a statement chandelier. So think about grouping accessories to complement one another, and accentuate your room’s best features.”

4. Splurge on lighting Statement lighting is a simple change that will immediately give the home a designer sheen. Lighting the home well will highlight all the details and thought that has gone into it, while adding a stylish touch. “Designers favour lighting installations that feature strong shapes and silhouettes,” Rebecca says. “A sculptural, eye-catching lighting centrepiece can completely transform the room, and give it depth and height. Layer the lighting options, instead of focusing solely on overhead or general lighting. “Having multiple sources of light is key, and allows you to play with different settings for a variety of looks and moods,” Rebecca advises.

Statement lighting is a simple change that will immediately give the home a designer sheen. Lighting the home well will highlight all the details and thought that has gone into it, while adding a stylish touch.

“So mix it up - while you can have a beautiful chandelier, don’t forget the importance and power of a mid-century modern sconce, or lovely floor lamp.”

Ming plants POP this Christmas!

Dobbies reveals how to incorporate plants into Christmas décor, injecting a burst of life into its 2021 themes... Dobbies, the UK’s leading garden centre retailer, has revealed its top suggestions for customers looking to incorporate plants into their Christmas look this year. Dobbies’ Horticultural Director, Marcus Eyles shares his top plant picks for winter 2021 to complement Dobbies’ Christmas themes, giving customers a wealth of inspiration for their Christmas décor this season. Marcus commented: “Christmas is about more than trees and wreaths, there are a whole host of stunning plants and houseplants which can enhance your home. And, given the proper care and attention, these plants can last well beyond the ringing of the bells on New Year’s Eve, so they really are the gift that keeps on giving and a worthwhile investment. “Each of our themes this year have a unique style so I have created a tailored selection that will really complement the key colours and add a splash of botanical beauty to each look.”

For Yuletide Wonder, Dobbies take on traditional Christmas décor. Marcus recommends classic plants such as Red Amaryllis, Red Cyclamen and Red Anthurium to continue the warm colour scheme. Yuletide Wonder features bold scarlet and luxe gold tones, so outdoor plants like Skimmia rubella, Picea glauca albertiana ‘Conica’ will help tie the outside in and create a natural flow from home to garden.

Mystical Woodland embraces rustic tones so to create an authentic feel, Marcus suggests incorporating earthy evergreens including Holly Green, Ivy Green and Buxus into tablescapes and décor. To carry the theme outdoors, Contorted Hazel ‘Contorta’, Bay Trees and Box Topiary are the top picks.

Winter Glamour is Dobbies “Instagrammable” theme for 2021 and features a glamorous look and feel. To incorporate some greenery into this polished look, Marcus recommends indulgent plants such as White Cyclamen, succulent Stephanotis and glamourous Gardenia. To continue the lavish theme outdoors, Christmas Rose, Lenten Rose and Silver Birch are the top choices for an elegant garden area. For the moody and chic Midnight Reflections look, Marcus advises on plants like Paperwhites and white Hyacinth to add a subtle finishing touch without detracting from the overall effect. Blue Spruce, Ivy White, Holly White and Viburnum tinus are timeless plants that will also enhance the festive glow in this glamorous theme.

For Dobbies’ most colourful Christmas theme, Festive Bazaar, Marcus suggests customers opt for an eclectic mix of pink and blue Hyacinths, paired with Christmas Cherry (Solanum) to really amplify the overall décor. Callicarpa, Vaccinium and Pyracantha the perfect outdoor additions and will bring a pop of colour to winter gardens, tying the outdoors into this fun theme.

To finish off the elegant Champagne Sparkle look, Marcus recommends dainty and delicate plants including Camellia and White Amaryllis so as not to overwhelm the muted palette in this theme. If customers are looking to bring some drama to the décor, Christmas Cacti, Sarcoccoca, Variegated Rubber Plant and Spider Plant (Chlorophytum) present beautiful contrasting textures and will make the Champagne Sparkle accessories pop. For more inspiration and decorating tips for this festive season Dobbies’ 2021 Christmas look book, filled with ideas and top tips is available here: http://redmcgregor.com/dobbies-christmas/mobile/index.html

The Best Colour Combinations Using

. . . t n i a P Bla

Frenchic Paint have provided their top tips on how to make black paint work...

Very few colours make a statement quite like black. It's sophisticated, seductive and oh-so-modern. Far from being difficult to work with, it complements a kaleidoscopic array of shades, tints, tones and hues. Black And White: Timeless Contrast

You can't go wrong with a timeless black and white palette. Thanks to the high contrast, it lends drama to drab-looking settings. What's more, both colours are exceptionally adaptable, meaning you have ultimate freedom when choosing accents and furnishings.Painting door frames with Frenchic Blackjack is a fuss-free and inexpensive way to revamp your interiors without undergoing a complete overhaul. To add warmth, accessorise with wooden furniture, woven rugs, indoor plants and artificial lights with a soft golden glow. Black And Stone Grey: Create Space

Minimalists love black and stone grey for its contemporary charm, expansive feel and harmonious blend. It's an excellent combination to give the illusion of space. Stone greys like Frenchic Stormy reflect natural light while black disguises where walls start and end. Paint window frames, doors and bannisters in Frenchic Loof, an innovative chalk and mineral paint that requires no sealing, and choose grey curtains, stair runners and door hangings to tie the look together.

Black And Sage Green: Bring The Outside In

Bring the outside in with a calming black and sage green scheme, reminiscent of leisurely walks and luscious fields in spring. Kitchen cabinets painted in Wise Old Sage and splashes of white counterbalance black floors and countertops, making spaces feel quaint rather than overwhelming. Black And Dusky Pink: Retro Glamour

Dusky pink is a more compelling and unusual neutral than white, with warmer undertones for a less brazen finish. Unlike hot pinks and fuchsias, it softens black and suits vintage to modern decor. Stepping away from the ultrafeminine, you can make this combination a little more out-there by introducing retro signs, bathmats and mirrors. Fun accents heighten pink's playfulness without feeling childish. Try Frenchic Dusky Blush for this.

How to chop the price of your

Rising Costs...

following record inflation rise...

It was recently announced that the UK inflation rate rose to a record 3.2% in the year to August, its highest level in nine years. The Consumer Prices Index rose from 2% in July, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), in a development primarily driven by higher food costs. The ONS described the increase as “temporary”, but experts at price comparison site money.co.uk have urged Britons to shop smart in order to withstand the rise regardless of how long it goes on for. James Andrews, senior personal finance expert at money.co.uk said: “The increase of 1.2 percentage points since July is the biggest since records began and, in part, has been brought about by the ‘Eat Out to Help Out’ scheme, which pushed down the price of restaurant meals a year go, making today’s figures more stark.

“While we do not expect inflation to remain at current levels for long, it’s important to plan for the here and now. And remember, just because inflation falls, that doesn’t mean prices will drop, merely stop rising. With food costs bearing the brunt of this rise, there are several ways to keep your weekly costs lower.

“One way to get ahead is by taking advantage of loyalty schemes, which is much easier today than it was in years gone by, thanks to the magic of the app and smartphone. Both Tesco Clubcard and Nectar card holders can use applications on their mobile to collect points at the till. You can then redeem these points for discounts on shopping and other benefits. “If you’re a parent or a caregiver, you might be eligible for supermarket vouchers, which can be spent on food at shops including Aldi, Asda, Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose and M&S. To find out if you qualify you should contact your child’s school. Plenty of online supermarkets also have introductory offers for new customers, which you can find

on their websites, while discount codes frequently appear in the supermarket magazines that you see at the store entrance and exit.

“If you’re shopping online, then you also have the benefit of easily comparing prices between different stores. Spend some time looking at each supermarket's website to see which has the best prices. You could even build the same shopping basket at multiple stores and then compare the total bills (before paying them of course) to see how much you are able to save. “Always remember that larger supermarkets tend to be cheaper than ‘metro’ or ‘local’ branches on the high street, so you should avoid doing big shops at local convenience stores like Tesco Express and Sainsbury's Local. Plan ahead and visit the full-size supermarkets to avoid paying a premium.

“As hard as it may be, try and avoid being a brand snob. In their heyday, shops like Waitrose and M&S were the market leaders for quality food, however, thanks to the meteoric rise of shops like Lidl and Aldi, you can get good quality groceries much cheaper. And don’t get too hung up on brand names. Some of the own-brand versions are actually the same product, made in the same factory, just with a different label. The key is to try ownbrand items out, if you’re happy with the way they taste and look there’s no reason to move back to the more expensive version after all.” “And while you’re on the hunt for quality, cheap food, do a little bit of snooping at your local store to find out when the treasured yellow reduced stickers come out. It’s often possible to get tomorrow’s lunch or dinner at a bargain price if you show up a few hours before closing time.

“This tip sounds obvious but it’s often overlooked - make a budget. Figure out how much you can afford to spend before arriving at the shop and then tot up your items as you go along. If you don’t then it’s all too easy to end up spending an additional £20 or £30 on your shop.

“For more shopping tips be sure to visit money.co.uk’s comprehensive guide here: https://www.money.co.uk /guides/tips-for-shopping-smartly-during-lockdown.”

Telford & Wrekin Council’s

Mental Health Champion, working with Town & Parish Council’s to have their own Mental Health

! s n o i p m a h C

So far 27 mental health champions have been elected over 16 Town and Parish councils, making Telford & Wrekin the first area to achieve this, or even have mental health areas of responsibility on Town and Parish councils. This pioneering work has not gone un-noticed and they have now been asked to do a blog/vlog for the centre for mental health website to showcase to other councils how this is working. Mental health awareness training has been written, which will be delivered over November to all mental health champions, to enable them to recognise the signs of mental ill health, and be able to refer and signpost to the many services available here in Telford & Wrekin The Deputy CEO of centre for mental health has also agreed to attend one of their monthly meetings to support their work, deliver a presentation and answer any questions they may have.

Over the last few months, Cllr Kelly Middleton - Telford & Wrekin Councils Mental Health Champion has encouraged all local Town & Parish Councils to have their own Mental Health Champions... All town and parish councils were contacted, and asked to include this on their full council meeting agendas. Cllr Middleton then went along to talk to them over several months, to explain more about the role, and set up a plan of how we could work together to raise awareness and help end the stigma around mental health, by each electing their own mental health champion, to work on ward specific targeted campaigns. These include things like wellbeing walks, support drop in’s to help raise awareness of what support is available, attending events with a promotional stand, with a calendar of national awareness days to target.

www.telfordlifestyle.co.uk

Telford Lifestyle Magazine

As a result of attending meetings, Cllr Middleton has also had requests for this training to be delivered to Town and Parish councils and staff. The mental health champions will be working with their Town and Parish councils to look at the support available for staff and councillors and they are now working to further promote a culture of positive wellbeing in the workplace. The support across the borough has been amazing and it’s fantastic to see councils, and councillors wanting to do more work to support positive mental health in their communities Cllr Middleton has been regularly posting updates on this work on social media to further raise awareness and it’s been very well received. Mental health workers and organisations have contacted her wanting to get involved. Park Lane Centre in Woodside have also made mental health champion an area of responsibility for the Directors board and have requested the training, which will be delivered to all staff. Having worked with centre for mental health to create a pledge to formalise the commitment, and rolling it out to all Town and Parish councils to sign, as well as to services, community settings and businesses too. This whole community approach will enable them to work with the community to tackle these entrenched health inequalities, and create improved mental health in our Borough. Have Yourself a...

MERRY MINDFUL

Christmas!

Learning to be mindful is one of the best Christmas gifts you can give to yourself. Finding ways to improve calmness, positivity and well-being, through a range of mindfulness methods can really benefit both kids and adults.

Even in day-to-day life, there are ample opportunities to fit in a moment of mindfulness, which will help to breathe space into your daily routine.

Most days we are running around and rushing out of the door, without a moment’s thought towards how we would like the day to go. Rushing to school or work, you all too often find that someone (or something) has got on your nerves and then you find yourself reacting with frustration, anger or impatience - which is difficult to deal with, as none of us WANT to act this way. Changing this pattern of behaviour may seem hard, but by just pausing for a moment through each day, and practicing mindfulness, you really can change your day for the better to be more in line with how you would like it to be. Start the day by taking a moment to relax, take three slow, deep breaths and ask yourself what your intention is for the day. It could be something small like just to be kind to yourself or to be more patient with the kids, or others. It could be just to have more fun, or to eat well. Then through the day remind yourself of your intention regularly. Creating new patterns takes time, but it is really important to build new healthy mental health habits, which in turn can help to achieve a positive can-do attitude, help you to increase confidence and reduce stress. Learning to live in the moment and to de-stress is a powerful tool which will improve your well-being. Try different methods of mindfulness to get the one that suits you best. There are all kinds of things to try; meditation, yoga, exercise, mindful eating and so on. I have found meditation works well for me (I use videos from The Mindful Movement on YouTube), as it has taught me to live in the moment - which in turn helps to reduce stress around things in the past, and the future. Give yourself the best Christmas present this year - the gift of mindfulness! For tips and ideas visit: https://www.nhs.uk/mentalhealth/self-help/tips-and-support/mindfulness/

. . . n o i t p Consum Could you reduce your meat consumption?

Many red and processed meats are high in saturated fat. Too much saturated fat in the diet can raise the amount of LDL cholesterol in the blood. The NHS recommends a daily meat intake of no more than 70g. Reducing your intake of red and processed meats will not only benefit your health, but it is also good for the environment. We have some tips to help you reduce your red and processed meat consumption.

What are red, white and processed meats?

Red meat includes beef, lamb and pork and it tends to be higher in saturated fat. White meat, such as chicken and turkey are lower in total fat and saturated fat. Processed meat includes smoked, cured and preserved meats, such as bacon, salami, sausages and ham.

Take a break from red and processed meat every week

Don’t feel pressured to cut out all meat from your diet. If you tend to eat red and/or processed meat most days, why not challenge yourself to one meat-free day every week? Try searching online or in cookbooks for meat-free recipes. You can also get some inspiration by visiting: https://www.meatfreemondays.com/

Switch to white meat or fish

If you cook with a lot of red and processed meat, or if steak is your usual option when eating out, try switching to chicken, turkey or fish instead. This will help to reduce your saturated fat intake. Aim to eat two portions of fish every week, one of which should be an oily fish. Oily fish, such as salmon, sardines, and mackerel, contain omega-3 fatty acids which help to keep your heart healthy.

Try some vegetarian alternatives

Meat substitutes, such as vegetarian sausages, mince and burgers are lower in saturated fat than equivalent meat products. Keep an eye on food labels as some meat substitutes are high in calories and salt. If you’re not a fan of ‘fake meat’ you could try products made with beans, pulses, and nuts as these are all good sources of protein.

Environmental impacts... Does eating less meat reduce your impact on the environment? The simple answer is yes. It’s important to understand the bigger picture around animal farming and it’s impact. Things like deforestation, fuel for transportation, methane emissions and other things like waste management. You don’t have to become veggie or vegan tomake a difference - just reducing your intake can help! The Basics

Model:Ford Fiesta ST-Line Edition (5dr) 1.0 Mhev 6-Speed Manual Price: £21,160 5 door version Engine: 1.0 Hhev 6-speed Pictures: fordpresskits.com

Shake the maracas and tap the tambourine. The new Fiesta ST-Line mild hybrid is in town. It's fanfare time as Fords Fiesta heads a supermini parade. Ford never rests on its laurels and the latest Fiesta incarnation leaves rivals licked and seems set for sales success judging by public response to this 5 door hatchback that seems to have it all. Nothing bowls along with such bountiful verve as this acknowledged leader of the pack. In truth, the Fiesta brand is not so much a legend in the making as a mechanised marvel for modern times. The look is certainly smart, with a sporty body kit that is a true indicator of what this Fiesta is all about. Several times I invited friends and neighbours to appraise the design and say what came into mind. There was unanimous concurrence that it promised joie de vivre - and they were right. Although a car is much more than its looks, a good looking car makes the owner feel good - and if that works for a broken nosed old dog like me, it's no wonder that it 'does the trick' for everyone else. Sales figures will prove this. The £21,160 5 door version of the ST-Line, powered by that super efficient, super clean, super economical three cylinder 998cc 'wonder engine' aided by unobtrusive mild hybrid technology, does everything so well that you feel like ringing a bell. A small battery pack and generator electrically assist the petrol engine for moving away from a standstill and for boosting acceleration when needed. The only way you will be aware of electrical assistance is by spotting a tiny green light on the instrument panel. The net result is a feeling of liveliness that you probably haven't experienced since your teens. 125PS is enough to take you to over 120mph, yet around 57/8 mpg overall is easy to achieve. It's essentially thrifty nature would make

Ford Fiesta ST-Line Edition... any Chancellor jealous. Try as I might to restrain myself - because this Fiesta invites such spirited driving - the figure didn't drop much even then. Excellent though the low fuel consumption is, it's not the best in class. But are we really reduced to obsessively focussing on mpg at the expense of 'fun'? (remember that?). This Fiestas other leading attractions are legion and you'd buy one because it's such a lovely little car to drive, is so well made that it oozes quality, is so comfortable and is simply - overall - the best car in the class: better than the new Corsa - particularly so now that the interior is much improved. It's less 'fiddly' in the dashboard department and the navigation is a joy to use and is sensibly placed at eye level - unlike in some rivals that place screens dangerously low. Needless to say you get lots

of electrical wizardry for the modern age. It might not have quite as much room inside as some rivals or have such a big boot but it really does offer big car comfort. If you prioritise an extra centimetre of boot space over sharp steering, an agile chassis and plenty of grip then you're missing something in your motoring. Even on boring motorway trips it hums along quietly in an even more relaxed way in the sixth gear of the delightfully light and slick gearbox. That highly acclaimed three cylinder petrol engine is a gem: smooth, quiet - but above all - lively as a cricket with its tail on fire..

in the service of fine motoring. As an addendum to the above remarks, it struck me as I applied the brakes in deference to a panting cyclist heaving his bike up a particularly unchallenging hill, that whereas one's progress may be retarded by ever more sophisticated braking systems, there appears to be no stopping Ford's progress. Other manufacturers watch and weep.

As I bobbed along, enraptured by the carefree felicity of the Fiestas road dynamism, I asked myself 'Is this the finest handling supermini available today?' And no. I'm not in the pay of the manufacturers: just

Stern readers may 'tut tut' at such rhapsodising but those canny folk at Ford know better than anyone how much more fun the world is when liveliness is sprinkled across the grey path of predictability. So it is with the Fiesta ST Line Edition 1.0 mild hybrid.. Never once behind the wheel did I feel anything but light-hearted and well prepared for the messy pitfalls of life. It might be pushing things to say that it blazes a trail - but certainly it has rivals trailing. If 'feel good' motoring is your meat, the Fiesta is the perfect treat. So blow the fife and bang the drum - the new Fiestas time has come.

Councillor community grants

Local News...

increase to help local communities...

. . . d n u F e Prid Councillor Paul Watling, cabinet member for cooperative communities, engagement and partnerships, said:

“The Councillors’ Pride Fund has helped our communities better support each other in the places where they live. During the last 18 months, this has been more important than ever and is why we have raised each councillor’s fund to £5,000. “Feedback from ward councillors highlights how even small amounts of money can have a significant and long-lasting impact on communities and people’s wellbeing. Breakfasts for young people, Laptops for Learning and wellbeing packs for people on their own at Christmas are things that really do make a big difference, and why the increased funding is such great news.”

Telford & Wrekin Council's cabinet approved an increased in funding for ward councillors to spend in the next two years on projects that benefit their local communities. Since the councillor grant fund was introduced 10 years ago, Telford & Wrekin Council has invested £918,000 to councillors to fund local community projects, with more than 1,160 community projects benefiting from the Councillors’ Pride Fund since 2015. Recent projects have included Laptops for Learning, breakfasts for children and young people, wellbeing packs for residents who were on their own at Christmas, play area improvements, community benches, trees to enhance the environment and reduce the impact of climate change, and practical measures to help community centres become Covid-secure so they can reopen their doors.

For 2021/22 and 2022/23, all 54 ward councillors will each have £5,000 to allocate to community projects in their ward, which is an extra £3,000 to support communities in their Covid-19 recovery. Council leader Councillor Shaun Davies said:

“The pandemic has impacted on communities in so many ways, with people experiencing difficulties and feelings of isolation. Our local green spaces have also been the destination of choice for many of us, reminding us why they are so important. This fund helps make projects that support communities and improve local environments happen. It offers funds that can be difficult to achieve from other grant giving organisations, with flexibility to support even the smallest of community groups. It makes all things possible. As long as the projects benefit the local community, how the money is allocated is at the discretion of the ward councillor.” Telford & Wrekin Council’s cabinet noted the continued impact of the Councillors’ Pride Fund and increased funding over the next two years. Ward councillors have until 31 January 2022 to allocate their £5,000 community funding for 2021/22. A full list of projects benefiting from the funding in 2020/21 can be found on the website. Anyone who has a community project that they would like to put forward for consideration is asked to contact their local councillor. Council announces

£4.8m investment into Telford and Wrekin’s borough town

. . . s  e r st High Plans will be drawn up for each of the borough towns, working with town councils and other local partners, and the Plans will reflect the different roles of each high street from local community ‘hubs’ to larger centres attracting visitors from across the borough and from further afield. The investment will also support initiatives to promote all the borough’s high streets including new marketing opportunities. Further announcements will be made in the coming weeks. Cllr Lee Carter, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood, Commercial and Regeneration, said:

Telford & Wrekin Council has announced that it will invest £4.8m into the borough’s high streets over the next two years, with work on phase three of its nationally acclaimed Pride in Our High Streets programme now underway. The programme, which includes a focus on regenerating the high streets of Dawley, Madeley, Ironbridge and Newport will see the introduction of high street Place Plans aiming to tackle the issues that are impacting on each of the borough’s high streets.

“Phase two of the programme saw us commit £2.2m to a range of innovative high street initiatives including a programme of façade improvements, engagement initiatives with the younger generation of entrepreneurs, and a raft of ‘Revive and Thrive’ business grants supporting local high street businesses to launch or diversify, creating more than 160 local high street jobs. As a direct result, we are seeing more residents enjoying our high streets. “Recognising the achievements of previous phases, the next phase of Pride in Our High Streets will expand on those successful initiatives as well as launching new campaigns. “Place Plans will play a significant part in shaping each borough town’s future by informing investment priorities. Fundamentally, they will aim to make each a more attractive destination for residents and visitors whilst also addressing town centre problems such as antisocial behaviour by linking with other council initiatives such as our Safer Stronger Communities programme. “As a council, our vision is to protect, care and invest to create a better borough. By investing this £4.8m across our borough high streets, we’re helping make our borough town centres vibrant places where residents want to be. “Everyone in our borough towns should be able to take pride in their high street – so that’s what we’re working to deliver.”
