La Lanterna - Shrewsbury’s very own piece of Italy...
On an crisp Autumn evening, my colleague Luke and I ventured into the heart of Shrewsbury, to tantalise our taste buds at the much talked about La Lanterna Italian restaurant at The Old Vestry. Nestled in the cobbled streets this Piece of Italy in the heart of Shrewsbury surely did not disappoint. The Old Vestry is at the back of St. Julian's Church. [St. Julian's from Fish Street] On approaching the restaurant the smell of Italian food wafted through the air, We could not wait to see the menu. On entering the building it was adorned with Italian memorabilia, with gentle music in the background, candlelit tables a quaint quirky restaurant that caters for every Occasion. We were greeted by Alfredo Pensa and his wonderful team who did there upmost to cater for all our needs throughout the evening. This quirky venue seats 33 people and boasts its own exclusive dining booth for those special occasions. We were handed the drinks menu accompanied by some delicious
olives and mozzarella cheese to indulge in whilst we gazed over the menu. They have a fantastic selection of Antipasti from (Funghetti All Aglio) –Italian style garlic mushrooms to (Zuppa Toscana) – Vegetable and bean soup from the Tuscan region,a great selection of Italian dishes. We opted for Caprese-Fresh Mozzarella cheese and sliced tomato and Italian style garlic mushrooms. Glancing round the restaurant was packed full of families and couples indulging in these Italian delights, The evening was going great so far as we eagerly awaited our Antipasti we looked around at the lovely setting imagining we were in Italy, it truly did have that special feel. They have a fantastic lunchtime special MondayThursday Pasta, salad or bruschetta and a glass of wine 125ml/ soft drink for just £10.00. Out came the lovely Antipasti, Fresh juicy tomato on the vine, sliced and packed with mozzarella and fresh basil drizzled with balsamic

vinegar and olive oil on a bed of fresh mixed leaves. Juicy mouthwatering infusion of flavour that complimented each other perfectly. The Italian style mushrooms were divine served with pancetta melted mozzarella and topped with prosciutto served on a bed of crispy leaves, drizzled with oil. Oh my if this was only our starter we could not wait for our mains.
“Carne e pesce” The mains menu all served with potatoes and vegetables or salad or pasta Napoli. This menu boasts many flavoursome dishes such as salmone mandorlato-Pan fried fillet of salmon topped with almonds and garlic to Bistecca al Pepe-Sirloin steak topped with peppercorn sauce to lamb steak topped with garlic and rosemary onions and bacon. Amazing menu so hard to choose. Obviously with it being Italian we decided to choose “La pasta menu”- A menu full of delicious well known Italian dishes such as Conchigle- Pasta shells in tomato sauce served with King prawns garlic and white wine. We decided on Penne
and fresh raspberry’s. The desserts were the finale of a enjoyable evening, full and satisfied we were given complimentary limoncello shots before the journey home. Ten out of ten to Alfredo and team for a wonderful evening with fantastic delicious food in a lovely setting, attentive friendly staff. I can’t wait to return. Highly recommended by The Hype team.

This dish was gorgeous a beautiful creamy pasta sauce absolutely delicious with the mixed meats, I was in pasta heaven. Luke opted for Arrabbiata con bacon- Penne in a hot tomato sauce with chillies and bacon (Can be made without bacon and caters for vegetarian options too). As we sampled each other’s delightful food we were extremely pleased with our Italian dining experience here at La Lanterna.
A brief break was needed before “I Dolci” (Dessert)we sang along with the rest of the restaurant as as it was a diners birthday. They really make a fantastic effort here to make everyone feel special and very welcome. A dessert platter was shown which included an array of fine desserts from home made Tiramisu to limoncello pana cotta, chocolate and pear cheesecake it was a tray of pure delights. There is a specials board for mains and desserts too. So Tiramisu was Luke’s choice a creamy gorgeous dish laced with brandy and fresh cream,Very rich and tasty. Wyle Cop in Shrewsbury is packed with an eclectic mix of cafes, bars, independent shops and boutiques lining the steep hill, luckily there are some great eateries which make the climb a worthwhile endeavour. Casa Naranjo, tucked away down a quaint cobblestone alley, lined with Tudor styled buildings, is an authentic Tapas bar set in a little restaurant full of atmosphere, taste and authenticity. They serve homemade, authentic Spanish Tapas with very carefully sourced ingredients, which are complemented with a selection of Spanish Beers, Ciders and Wines.
Ramon and Marta have created a little slice of Spain within the taverna styled restaurant with exposed beams and traditional posters, which along with the warmest welcomes, makes you feel relaxed and at ease. We were seated and given the drinks menu, which has a good selection of traditional Spanish options, I chose Sangria which was just what the doctor ordered, and my colleague Luke, had a coke as he was driving. Some warm crusty bread with tomato dip and olives were brought over to get things started, which were really nice.
To follow we had Ham & Manchego Board; a firm cheese with an intense flavour, and Mejillones a la Gallega; Mussels with Chilli, Garlic, White Wine and Red Pepper Sauce. The flavours of the cheese were excellent to complement the ham and fresh bread, and the Mussels were on a whole new level; cooked to perfection, presented impeccably, the rich infusion of flavours were sensational.

Christmas Next to arrive was Pulpo Galician Style; boiled octopus with potatoes and pimento. I haven’t tried octopus previously, and although I was a little apprehensive, I didn’t need to be - it was amazing. The dishes were flowing nicely now, and hot on the heels of the last dish was Pinchos Morunos; Marinated Pork Skewers and a generous serving of Patatas Bravas; Crispy fried potatoes with spicy red pepper sauce and garlic mayonnaise. The pork was delicious and juicy; bursting with flavour and the patatas bravas was amazing, the spicy sauce and mayo making a really great companion for the pork – lovely.

The portions are generous and our bellies were filling up nicely but we always save a little space for pudding and this occasion was no different. Luke decided to try the Chocolate brownie and I was pleased to see Churros on the menu, which came with hot chocolate sauce; these were really amazing – hot and crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Luke said his brownie was moist and chocolaty with the perfect amount of crunch to the top and lashings of chocolate sauce, comfort food at its best; an excellent way to finish off the evening.

THE JAVA STOP My colleague Mia and I headed over to the historic town of Shrewsbury to visit e Java Stop, a brand new coffee shop, which specialise in coffee, tea, lunches and cakes. I was particularly intrigued about the origin of the name; apparently Java relates to the Indonesian island of Java, which during the 1600’s, the Dutch introduced coffee to the Southeast Asia region. ey began planting coffee on Java and it’s from this island that the name arose. As we made our way up Roushill we noticed the building straight away, very striking from the outside and it definitely caught our eye. As we entered we were warmly greeted by the co-owner Jo, and head chef Anthony. e inside is modern and inviting but still manages to have a cosy feel, it’s somewhere you could sit for hours and watch the world go by. ere is also an upstairs area, which is great, so plenty of choice when it comes to seating. We took a seat upstairs, the view was magnificent and you could easily get caught up in an afternoon of people watching. We were eager to get started on the first course of the day, which was afternoon tea, which the guys are introducing to the menu, and it was rather special; A traditional variety of freshly baked cakes, still warm scone with lashings of butter, strawberry jam & clotted cream. Exquisite finger sandwiches, with salmon, cucumber & crème fraiche, and chicken and curried mayonnaise with raisins, egg

mayonnaise and watercress. Finished off with cheddar and tomato, this particular afternoon tea would be difficult to beat, bursting with flavours and the combination of ingredients was well thought out and really worked well together. e dishes are all homemade and this was evident in the quality, the cakes were simply scrumptious, from Victoria sponge to zesty lemon drizzle cake and huge homemade scone, and the mouth-watering chocolate covered strawberries, accompanied by a bottle of Prosecco - What a truly staggering start to proceedings. To follow was e Java wrap, Italian flatbread with 3 different varieties of cured meats with rocket sundried tomatoes, mozzarella, almonds and
dressing – an extraordinary delight, the texture and tastes were out of this world. e dish was simply top quality, as were the dishes that followed. Next up was Half Breakfast in a wrap; scrambled egg, sausage and bacon. Once again the food was nothing short of perfection and something I would expect in a top Michelin star restaurant. e sausage and bacon were cooked brilliantly, and once again the fresh ingredients made this an amazing treat. e humble scrambled egg is something that I am somewhat of a critic of, but this I could not fault at all, and I even asked Anthony for the recipe it was that good! To finish, we had the Parma ham and courgette roll, roasted off, and sat on a bed of salad, accompanied
with a poached egg and hollandaise sauce with a balsamic glaze. is is the first time Mia has tried courgette, and she was pleasantly surprised, if fact she was blown away. Everything worked excellently, once again and quality was never compromised – in spite of the large quantities of dishes being produced. Overall we had a truly fantastic experience at e Java Stop and I can only imagine it going from strength to strength. Jo Langfield and Gary Slaytor the co-owners have done a fantastic job to bring something different to the town, and with the very talented chef Anthony, they have the ability to establish themselves a very important part of the Shrewsbury food scene. If it’s just a good cup of coffee that you are after then you won’t go far wrong, or if you are looking to treat yourself to a meal - e Java Stop is the place to go.

Leaton Forest on The Leaton Knolls Estate
As most of you who have visited us will know, Leaton Forest is one of the largest privately owned and run retailer of Christmas trees in Shropshire, providing trees for a range of customers through Shropshire, the West Midlands and Mid Wales.
Each year Leaton Forest supplies a number of trees from:
• The very tall – 10 meters plus; to schools, churches, local authorities and organisations like The National Trust • To the very small for decoration above and in shop windows.
Some of our customers who have moved away from Shrewsbury are returning with their families from as far afield as Liverpool, Manchester, London and Jersey to name but a few places; carrying on the Family tradition of going into the forest to choose and cut or dig their own special Christmas tree. It is lovely to see new additions to these families who return year after year, sometimes with 3, 4 or more generations returning together; great grandparents, grandparents, parents, children and grandchildren. We see hundreds of these families with their happy, friendly faces who have been visiting the Leaton Forest for over 30 years, arriving in wellies, warm coats, hats and scarfs, all kitted out for an adventure in the forest!
This year we’ve started our own tradition, we now have our own flock of natural lawnmowers and weed controllers – Shropshire Sheep! They have had 14 lambs in March and April this year, some of which have stayed with us and others who have gone to start their own flocks. We hope to increase the flock again in 2018. We aim to carry on the tradition of growing trees cared for mostly by hand, e.g. pruning, shaping, thinning, felling and weeding, but now also with the help of our own Shropshire sheep.
From the woodlands we produce firewood, kindling, Swedish fire logs and other woodland products which we sell from our Christmas Tree Barn and where we also sell our Christmas trees, tree stands, wreaths, Christmas greenery, log baskets and mistletoe.

Festive Beef Wellington Beef Wellington is a classic ‘feel-good’ dish. Brilliant for the Winter time, with tender fillet, tasty coating, enveloped in crisp pastry that will hit the spot - every time!
Method 1. Preheat a frying pan on high heat, add some oil and a sprig of Rosemary, along with a generous knob of butter, Sear the beef fillet on all sides until brown (about 4mins) then remove and place to one side. 2. Finely chop the onion, garlic and mushrooms and cook in the frying pan with some oil and another knob of butter strip 2 sprigs of rosemary and add to the pan, cook for 1215minutes, stirring regularly. Add the chicken livers and Worcestershire sauce and continue cooking for 3-4 mins. Tip this onto a large chopped board season with salt and pepper and chop to a spreadable consistency, finally adding the breadcrumbs. 3. Preheat the oven 210c/Gas Mark 7. Dust the surface with flour and roll out your pastry to about 30cm by 40cm. Spread the chopped mixture over the pastry leaving a gap at each edge of about 5cm. Eggwash the edges. Place the beef on top and wrap carefully pinching the ends. Place on a greaseproof paper lined tray score the pastry on top and eggwash the pastry, then cook for 40 minutes. 4. Once cooked set aside the wellington for 5 minutes, then slice and serve with steamed veg and gravy.

Crust: • 10 Digestive Buscuits -Crushed • 2 Tbsp. Sugar • 5 Tbsp. Butter, Melted Filling Ingredients: • 1/2 Cup Fresh Lime Juice • 10-12 Fresh Mint Leaves • 1 Can Sweetened Condensed Milk • 4 Large Egg Yolks • 2 Tablespoons Rum (Optional) To Top: • Whipped Cream • Finely Grated Lime Zest • Mint Leaves
Method Preheat oven to 350°F. 1. Stir together the buscuit crumbs, sugar, and butter in a bowl until evenly combined. Press mixture evenly onto bottom and up side of a 9-inch tin. Bake crust for 10 minutes, then remove and let cool. 2. Muddle the mint leaves and lime juice in a glass. Use a muddler or the end of your wooden spoon to mash the mint into the lime juice gently. Strain the juice and discard the mint leaves. 3. In a separate mixing bowl, beat together the condensed milk and egg yolks in a bowl until combined. Add the minty lime juice and add a little white rum to spice things up. Whisk until combined and slightly thickened. en pour the mixture into the crust and bake on the middle oven shelf for 15 minutes. Cool to room temperature and then refridgerate for 3 hours. 4. Finish with a dollop of cream, lime zest and some mint leaves.

The Area that has become the big focus is dental implants and why dental implants are getting so popular; In the UK dental implants have recently become a popular choice for replacing missing teeth. Dentists routinely advise patients about the availability of implant treatment as well as other options such as bridgework and dentures. Indeed it is very likely that the number of implants will grow sharply here in the next few years.
Despite this trend, it is still surprising to note that the UK is only 9th place in Europe with respect to the number of implants placed per 10K people. We are not only behind Switzerland, Sweden and Germany but the numbers for the UK are 10 times lower than that for Italy and are on the same level as Russia.
Perhaps the lower number of dental implants placed in the UK can be explained by the fact that many patients have NHS treatments and the NHS does not provide dental implants in everyday primary care. Spuce up your home in time for Christmas... We all love a good Spring clean but with Winter just around the corner, it’s now time to think about Christmas sprucing! It’s time to get your house in tip top shape for family, friends and Santa of course! Obviously you’ll need to do some general housework like dusting and hoovering but what else can you do to give your house a quick refresh before all the festivities? Turn on some Christmas music and try some of these ideas to spruce up your home ready to celebrate!
Update the furniture
Don’t wait until Christmas morning to receive something new for the house. Get it early and impress your guests with your home’s new stylish look. Whether it’s a new sofa or three piece suite or a stylish new dining table and sideboard, it is a guaranteed way to give your home a new lease of life.
Blitz your oven...
Either get someone to come and professionally clean your carpets (Prices normally start at around £25 a room but this will depend on the size and condition of the carpet), or you could hire a carpet cleaner for around £25 for the day from places like Tesco or some tool hire companies, and do it yourself. Get rid of the stains from the kid’s rooms and give your carpets a pristine, fresh look. If you have wood floors, give them a polish and they will look really good.
Scrubbing a greasy oven is officially the UKs most hated chore. But food and grease build up and for obvious hygiene reasons, its a job you can’t avoid. There are specialist companies that will come and get the job done for you, which will save you hours of scrubbing, plus they leave it looking like new! Podiatry is the modern term for professionals that also undertake routine medical based treatment of the foot and ankle. e Winter Blues... It's thought that around 2 million people in the UK are affected by the winter blues, or seasonal affective disorder (SAD). It can affect people of any age, including children. ere are a few things that can help with SAD, just like most things, many of those affected suffer in different ways, so what works for one person probably won't work for another. But don't give up! If the first remedy you try doesn't work, keep trying until you find one or a combination of a few different ones that do.
Here are a few to try… 1. Keep active – Yeah I know, when you feel low, getting out and about is the last thing you fancy doing but research shows that a daily one-hour walk in the middle of the day could be very helpful for coping with the winter blues. 2. Let there be Light – Get outside in some natural daylight, especially around midday. When decorating your home, choose pale colours that reflect light from outside, and position seating near to windows when possible. 3. Keep warm - Keep warm with hot drinks and hot food. Wear warm clothes and shoes, and aim to keep your home between 18C and 21C. If your symptoms are affecting you leading a normal life, see your GP for medical help. It's been shown that staying warm can reduce the winter blues by half.
4. Eat well - A healthy diet will help to boost your mood, give you more energy and stop you putting on weight over winter. Balance your craving for carbohydrates, such as pasta and potatoes, with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. 5. Light ‘em up… Some people find light therapy effective for seasonal depression. One way to get light therapy at home in winter is to sit in front of a light box for up to two hours a day. Light boxes give out very bright light at least 10 times stronger than ordinary home and office lighting. ey're not available on the NHS and cost around £100 or more. 6. Keep in touch - It's been shown that socialising is good for your mental health and helps ward off the winter blues. Make an effort to keep in touch with people and if you get invited out – say yes! 7. Get Support - Sharing your experience with others who know what it's like to have SAD is very therapeutic and can make your symptoms more bearable. Find a support group - SADA is the UK's only registered charity dedicated to SAD. It costs £20 (£10 for concessions) to join, and you'll receive an information pack, regular newsletters, discounts on products such as light boxes, and contacts for telephone support.

Firework Phobia in Pets
Bonfire night is fast approaching, although for us this is an exciting time of year, the same cannot be said for our pets. Many animals will find the noise and flashes created from fireworks frightening and very stressful. There are several things that can be done to help keep our pets feeling calm and safe during this time, have a read through our advice and see what you can do help your pet. After all it’s not just for the one evening, firework season will continue over Christmas and New Year.
There are some basic things you can start with at home, including:
• Make sure all dogs and cats are kept inside, lock your cat flaps and keep all windows and doors tightly shut to prevent pets from escaping. • Keep curtains drawn and place on the TV and radio, this will help block out some of the sound and visual effects. • Create a den, our cats and dogs like to hide away to help make themselves feel more secure. Place in their favourite toys and something of yours, the familiar smells will help them a feel a little more at ease. You can create this den earlier so that your pet gets used to it. • Try to act normally! If they want to pace around a little and find new hiding spots let them. The more you stress around them, the more stressed they will become, if you are relaxed it will help them do so too. • It’s also a good time to make sure your pets identification details are up to date! Just in case they manage to escape. Check your microchip details, collars and tags to ensure that all the details are correct.
It’s not just our cats and dogs that get worried, don’t forget about your smaller pets too:
• This can include our rabbits, guinea pigs, rodents and birds! • If possible hutches/enclosures should be moved out of the open, whether this be a room in the house or just into a shed or garage. • If you are unable to move your pets hutch/enclosure cover over with blankets, this will help deaden the noise and block out the sight of the fireworks. You could also turn the opening of the hutch towards the fence/wall so it’s not facing the open garden. • Provide plenty of extra bedding to allow for effective burrowing, this will help them feel a little safer.
Sometimes these general precautions aren’t enough for our more nervous animals. There are lots of products on the market designed to help calm and relieve anxiety. These include Adaptil and Feliway products, that come in plug-in diffusers, sprays and collars. For more advice on which product might be best suited to your pets needs, please do not hesitate to speak to us at any of our Severn Edge Vet branches.
Also spare a thought for our wildlife this firework season! If you’re building bonfires check them before lighting to make sure there are no little friends hibernating inside. Make sure all firework rubbish is disposed of properly, if left around it can become a hazard.
