NO.12 SHIFNAL REVIEW
My fiancé Ashleigh and I decided to visit the beautiful market town of Shifnal, to dine at the newly opened No 12 Shifnal, having heard great things about the restaurant. On arrival we were instantly impressed, the large car park and outdoor area are superb, extremely modern and on a warm summer evening would be the perfect location to sit back, relax and enjoy some drinks.
We ventured inside and were warmly welcomed by the manager Adrian and Kieran, the restaurant and cocktail lounge are designed to make this the ideal place to either pop in after work for a drink, or to visit for a family meal or special occasion. We even had the chance to stay in the hotel for the night too, which was something slightly different for us. We were shown up to our room, which was very spacious, with modern décor, and fully equipped with all of the stuff you would need, as well as little extras like an espresso machine which go a long way! As we were getting ready to go and explore the restaurant, when Kieran very kindly arrived with some cocktails for us to enjoy; what could be a better way to start off our evening? The cocktails were simply splendid, the No 12 Cherry Bakewell; which had Amaretto, raspberry liqueur, cranberry juice and pineapple juice. I must say this was the best cocktail I have ever had – a personal favourite. Once we finished our drinks, we headed down to the restaurant, but decided to take the scenic route through the cocktail lounge first and sample another cocktail, we took a seat in a nice open area leading onto the decking, a nice chance to sit down and relax after a hard day at the office. I opted for the Big Bang and Ashleigh went for the Pornstar Martini, the evening was about to get interesting… The Big Bang lived up to its name; full of flavour, the perfect amalgamation of ingredients and Ashleigh thoroughly enjoyed her cocktail. The cocktail lounge was a great place to visit before heading to the restaurant to take our seats.

We were shown to our table and took a peek at the A La Carte Menu, which has a plethora of choices, all bursting with an abundance of fresh ingredients which was lovely to see. For the starter Ashleigh went for the Crispy Belly Pork with pistachio crumb, honey and carrot puree, charred baby carrot, and I decided to try the Pan Seared Scallops with asparagus, black pudding, apple and Parma ham crisps. Ashleigh said her pork was sublime and full of flavour and the crispy crackling adorning the top, along with the combination of other ingredients made this the perfect dish. My Scallops were cooked impeccably and the asparagus and black pudding accompanied by the apple and Parma ham crisps made this a truly memorable start to the evening. For our main courses I went for the trio of pork- Pork tenderloin, braised pork cheek bon bon, crispy belly
pork, baby fondant potatoes accompanied with baby vegetables apple and caramel puree and red wine jus. Ashleigh went for the 8oz Sirloin Steak accompanied with fat chips and mushrooms and tomatoes. Visually, my main course looked magnificent and it tasted it too. The trio of pork was an unusual choice for me, but I was definitely pleased with my decision. Three pieces of sensational pork, each different and truly staggering in their own way; the standard of the food is something that I’ve experienced in Michelin star restaurants before now, and a real testament to the chefs. The rest of the dish worked really well and made this a fantastic main course. Ashleigh and steak can sometimes be a challenge, as she is definitely a steak snob; on this occasion she was truly impressed by the quality and equally the quantity. The steak was amazingly tender and oozing with flavour, and the fat chips were perfectly crispy and a brilliant partner to the steak; an epic winner for a hard to please steak lover. Onto pudding, and although we were almost bursting, the extensive dessert menu twisted our arms. For Ashleigh - Dark Chocolate Fudge and Cornish Sea Salt Brownie with white chocolate crumb, caramel and honey comb ice cream and I went for the Home Made Nutella Cheesecake. The chocolate brownie was delectable, and rated the best from a long list of brownies Ashleigh has tried; 10/10. The cheesecake was simply amazing, the base was perfectly crumbly and the Nutella topping was to die for.
Once we had finished we retreated to our bedroom. Overall we had a truly pleasurable stay at No.12 Shifnal, the service is excellent, and the food was sensational. The staff can’t do enough for you, and this combination makes this one of the best venues I have visited in the local area and even maybe the country. We would like to say thank you to the whole team for a wonderful evening, we will definitely be returning soon.

PONDICHERRY REVIEW
Autumn in the Ironbridge gorge is a beautiful sight; the trees are ablaze with rustic auburn hues bringing a warm and cosy feel to an otherwise chilly evening. Pondicherry has been a regular haunt for my partner and I, nestled in the midst of the world heritage site of Ironbridge the old police station and courthouse holds a gem of a fine dining experience. Built in 1862 the building retains its original charm, features of which are maintained both outside and within. is is complimented by fresh ambient décor and lighting which gives a contemporary vibe.
We entered the old courthouse, which was bustling with couples, families and larger parties giving it a vibrant atmosphere. Once seated at our table, we were given the extensive menus to study, a glass of Pinot Grigio blush and a Cobra beer were the perfect thing to help us relax whilst making our selections. ey also had a great selection of cocktails which we will have to go back and work through another night! After taking our order, the attentive staff brought over fresh poppadum's with mango chutney, onion salad and mint yoghurt which whet our appetites perfectly for the starters. I opted for the King Prawn Pakora, delicately spiced and deep fried in a light crunchy tempura batter, cooked to

perfection, with fantastic texture and very flavoursome. My partner chose the Tikka Gosht; tender pieces of lamb marinated with Indian herbs and spices. It went down a treat, the succulent and tender lamb was impressive, served with a fruity salad containing melon pieces, blackcurrants, kiwi and grapes, which complimented it brilliantly. After a short interval the mains arrived, I was excited to sample my King Prawns-Goan style; a king prawn dish simmered in a coconut based sauce finished with whole chillies, mustard seed and curry leaves with a garlic fried rice. e dish had a creamy yet crunchy texture, which really made it stand out - it was a sensational combination of flavours which I thoroughly
e staff were attentive without being imposing. After our meal they showed us underneath the courtroom to the old cells, which has been transformed with ambient décor which is simply breath-taking. Twinkling lights sparkle against the darker, brick lined cells creating a really beautiful, unique setting. e cells can be booked for private dining experiences which will be the venue for my next big birthday – if my partner can take a hint anyway! No wonder they boast celebrity clientele and a loyal happily fed list of regular customers to which we are pleased to be amongst. Check out the website for early bird offers, Christmas party bookings and see the full mouth-watering menu, to treat yourself to a first class dining experience.
enjoyed. My partner had the Tandoori Mixed Platter; an epic feast for the senses, with copious amounts of fragrant, aromatic lamb tikka, tandoori chicken, king prawn and seekh kebab with keema rice. A Cheese and Garlic Naan to share was just the ticket for mopping up every last drop. Suffice to say we were happily impressed with the delicious food and satisfied stomachs. Pondicherry is a smart eatery, maintaining the historic charm of the building whilst boasting a modern dining experience. e menu contains some special signature dishes as well as boasting many more, all of which are cooked to perfection. eir food is inspired by the finest street food from the four corners of the Indian subcontinent, with a range of dishes boasting rich and aromatic spices or more delicate intricate flavours that will delight every guest.

The Island House Review_Double Page Editorial 17/10/2017 16:33 Page 1
THE ISLAND HOUSE REVIEW
Recently renovated, The Island House restaurant and takeaway was a review that truly excited me and my partner Luke. Growing up in Wolverhampton, I have seen the building sat derelict for many years before owner Andrew Calleja, transformed it into something that is truly wonderful, capturing the imagination of the local people, including myself as I grew up only a street away.
As we arrived we noticed not only the restaurant but the fish and chip shop adjoining, were very busy, and with the aroma coming from there you could easily see why. As we entered the restaurant we were definitely taken by surprise, with the spaciousness and with the warm, inviting atmosphere. We were shown to our table by Michael and given our menus, including extensive drinks menu, which had a combination of wines, soft drinks and a very inviting cocktails, which includes 2 for 1 deal from 6-7pm each evening. Taking full advantage of the cocktail offer, I went for the Cherry
Bakewell and Strawberry Mojito; the cherry bakewell consisted of Absolut cherry vodka, disaranno, cranberry juice and cherry puree and the mojito had strawberry mojito, Bacardi, mint leaves and lime juice topped with soda. Luke went for a diet coke as he was the driver for the evening. My cocktails were delicious and certainly made this the perfect start to the evening.
After a good look at the a la carte menu and the special menu for the evening we had decided. For my starter I went for the BBQ Pork Ribs served with onion bhaji with raita dressing and Luke went for the Potato and Bacon Croquettes served with chef’s salad and black pudding and brown sauce. The ribs were cooked to absolute perfection, and the meat just fell off the
The Island House Review_Double Page Editorial 17/10/2017 16:33 Page 2
bone, they were complimented well by the bbq sauce which coated the ribs, the onion bhaji with the raita dressing was an unusual partner for the ribs but worked fantastically well, as the bhaji was spot on. Luke’s croquettes were magnificent, crispy on the outside but mouthwatering on the inside, this combined with the black pudding and brown sauce was a true winner, and if this was a taste of things to come, we were bursting with excitement. For our main courses I went for the 14oz T-bone Steak served with chunky chips with tomato and mushrooms and homemade onion rings and Luke went for the Island House Mix Grill, this consisted off gammon steak, Cajun spiced chicken supreme, tomato sausages, chorizo, fried eggs and roast potato and tomato, mushroom finished off with the homemade onion rings. Luke’s main course definitely
had the wow factory, quantity and quality in abundance. Every item on the plate was spectacular and this was the best mix grill, in Luke’s opinion, from a long list of grills. I was excited about my steak, but with a degree of caution due to the fact that I am a steak snob who is not easily pleased and it has to be pretty amazing to win me over from my usual steak restaurant. One bite and I was sold- the steak I requested to be cooked medium and that’s exactly how it was. Bursting with flavour and melting in my mouth and one of the best steaks I have ever had, accompanied with the chunky chips and the mushrooms and tomatoes and not forgetting the huge onion rings; this is top class.
For our desserts Luke went for the homemade Sticky Toffee Pudding with toffee sauce and vanilla ice cream and I went for the Chef’s Brownie which came with pistachio ice cream, chocolate sauce and marshmallows. My brownie really hit the spot, the texture and the flavours really
worked well together and ended the evening on a high for me. Luke’s sticky toffee pudding -the sponge was moist and bathed in toffee sauce, it was sensational.
Overall our experience at The Island House was nothing short of first class from start to finish, from the level of the service to the freshness of the ingredients, which you can taste are of the highest quality. I will be recommending this place to everyone and in my opinion it is exactly what Wolverhampton needed. From steak night to fish and chips on a Friday, I can’t wait to come back and try some more dishes. We would like to thank the team for a wonderful evening and wish them the very best.

Could WATCH increase your
independence?
The alarm simply connects to a phone line and is operated by the touch of a button, via a pendant worn around the neck or wrist. A powerful microphone on the alarm unit means that help can be called from anywhere in and around the property. Customer, Miss Egan explains: “I’m epileptic and with my WATCH alarm I know that if I have a fit my mum will be called or a paramedic can get in if necessary. This means that I can live independently with my little boy.”
WATCH recently received accreditation from the TSA (Telecare Services Association). The Code of Practice aims to put service users at the heart of their standards and compliance with these standards provides real assurance to WATCH’s users that they are delivering quality in what is otherwise a largely unregulated industry.
WATCH is a lifeline pendant alarm service which offers peace of mind and help when needed. The service supports individuals looking for technology solutions to help them remain independent in their own homes. WATCH is ideal for people with disabilities, medical restrictions, lifelimiting conditions and vulnerabilities.
Emma Dickenson, Service Manager says,” We’re thrilled to receive accreditation from TSA. It shows that we can meet their standards and innovate while continuing to place our customers at the heart of everything we do. In addition to our telephone alarm our users in Telford can also benefit from a Mobile Response Officer Service. This is very popular with people who don’t have friends and family nearby.” For more information and a free demonstration phone 01952 217151 or email enquiries@watchalarms.co.uk.

Cold Malice: Cold Justice Series Book #8
ASAC Steve (Mac) McKenzie is out to prove himself by leading a task force investigating a series of murders in the heart of Washington, DC. His undercover work in an antigovernment compound twenty years earlier is related—as is the sweet, innocent girl he befriended back then. Now that girl is a beautiful woman, and she has something to hide. Tess Fallon spent a lifetime trying to outrun her family’s brand of bigotry, but someone is threatening her anonymity by using the anniversary of her father’s death to carry out evil crimes and she’s terrified her younger brother is involved. She sets out to find the truth and comes face-to-face with a man she once idolized, a man she thought long dead. As the crimes escalate it becomes obvious the killer has an agenda, and Tess and Mac are running out of time to stop him. Will the perpetrator use a decades-old dream of revolution to attack the federal government? And will the fact that Tess and Mac have fallen hard for each other give a cold-hearted killer the power to destroy them both?.
e Killing Game by Toni Anderson Wildlife biologist Axelle Dehn isn’t about to let anyone harm her endangered snow leopards—not the poacher intent on killing them, nor the soldier who wants to use them as bait. But Axelle is unknowingly entangled in a conflict that stretches back three decades, a conflict that could spark a war between two of the world’s great nations. British SAS soldier, Ty Dempsey, is on a mission to hunt down an infamous Russian terrorist in a remote region of Afghanistan. Dempsey hasn’t failed a mission yet, but when Axelle is kidnapped by the Russian, he is forced to choose between duty and his heart. He risks everything to save the determined, prickly woman he’s fallen for, but in doing so sparks a deadly series of events that threaten to expose the most successful spy in history. A spy who will destroy anyone who gets in his way.

The Area that has become the big focus is dental implants and why dental implants are getting so popular; In the UK dental implants have recently become a popular choice for replacing missing teeth. Dentists routinely advise patients about the availability of implant treatment as well as other options such as bridgework and dentures. Indeed it is very likely that the number of implants will grow sharply here in the next few years.
Despite this trend, it is still surprising to note that the UK is only 9th place in Europe with respect to the number of implants placed per 10K people. We are not only behind Switzerland, Sweden and Germany but the numbers for the UK are 10 times lower than that for Italy and are on the same level as Russia.
Perhaps the lower number of dental implants placed in the UK can be explained by the fact that many patients have NHS treatments and the NHS does not provide dental implants in everyday primary care. But let’s forget politics, the NHS, and national stereotypes and look closer at why dental implants are so popular.
What Our Patients Say... People are conscious about their appearance and it is no longer acceptable to have a gap between teeth. This perhaps the most driven reason for implants. It is also very hard to justify preparing sound teeth to make bridgework. Thanks to dental implants we can now avoid interfering with those teeth.
Most patients particularly want to avoid traditional removable dentures as they can be uncomfortable and take up a lot of space in the mouth. Dental implants are fixed and are the size of a natural tooth. However it should be mentioned that implants are now regularly used to retain and stabilise loose dentures.
“I have been treated by Dr Wozniak for 8 years and have always found him to be extremely courteous, knowledgeable, direct and professional. He will make every possible investigation into treatments and options, charging fairly for whatever is mutually agreed upon. I feel that I am in good hands when I sit back in that dentists’ chair!”
Jane Harbord
“Dr Wozniak is a most meticulous and conscientious dentist. He has managed this year to resolve for me an extremely troublesome abscess infected front tooth/bridged crown. The journey of over an hour to visit his surgery is time well spent to receive such efficient and inexpensive treatment.”

Spuce up your home in time for Christmas... We all love a good Spring clean but with Winter just around the corner, it’s now time to think about Christmas sprucing! It’s time to get your house in tip top shape for family, friends and Santa of course! Obviously you’ll need to do some general housework like dusting and hoovering but what else can you do to give your house a quick refresh before all the festivities? Turn on some Christmas music and try some of these ideas to spruce up your home ready to celebrate!
Update the furniture
Don’t wait until Christmas morning to receive something new for the house. Get it early and impress your guests with your home’s new stylish look. Whether it’s a new sofa or three piece suite or a stylish new dining table and sideboard, it is a guaranteed way to give your home a new lease of life.
Blitz your oven...
Either get someone to come and professionally clean your carpets (Prices normally start at around £25 a room but this will depend on the size and condition of the carpet), or you could hire a carpet cleaner for around £25 for the day from places like Tesco or some tool hire companies, and do it yourself. Get rid of the stains from the kid’s rooms and give your carpets a pristine, fresh look. If you have wood floors, give them a polish and they will look really good.
Scrubbing a greasy oven is officially the UKs most hated chore. But food and grease build up and for obvious hygiene reasons, its a job you can’t avoid. There are specialist companies that will come and get the job done for you, which will save you hours of scrubbing, plus they leave it looking like new! Or you can tackle the job yourself - grab your rubber gloves and get to work. You can use a mixture of white vinegar and bicarbonate of soda, or there are lots of chemical oven cleaners available to buy in the shops, just make sure you open all of your windows if you use any caustic products.
Paint It...
Don’t neglect outside...
Get Cleaning ose Carpets...
Whether in the hallway, kitchen or the living room, now is as good a time as any to do a quick lick of paint. Grab a lovely can of paint and get to work. Powdery blues, silvery grey, or a crisp white are colors that look great all year round and give any space a quick and easy transformation.

It’s easy to forget about your outside areas in winter, but paying attention to outdoors is important too. Get the windows and gutters cleaned, clear the garden of leaves and rubbish and get things tidy for the long winter months to come. Treat your home to a pretty wreath or some twinkling lights for Christmas to add to festive feeling.

Beating
e Winter Blues... It's thought that around 2 million people in the UK are affected by the winter blues, or seasonal affective disorder (SAD). It can affect people of any age, including children. ere are a few things that can help with SAD, just like most things, many of those affected suffer in different ways, so what works for one person probably won't work for another. But don't give up! If the first remedy you try doesn't work, keep trying until you find one or a combination of a few different ones that do.
Here are a few to try… 1. Keep active – Yeah I know, when you feel low, getting out and about is the last thing you fancy doing but research shows that a daily one-hour walk in the middle of the day could be very helpful for coping with the winter blues. 2. Let there be Light – Get outside in some natural daylight, especially around midday. When decorating your home, choose pale colours that reflect light from outside, and position seating near to windows when possible. 3. Keep warm - Keep warm with hot drinks and hot food. Wear warm clothes and shoes, and aim to keep your home between 18C and 21C. If your symptoms are affecting you leading a normal life, see your GP for medical help. It's been shown that staying warm can reduce the winter blues by half.
4. Eat well - A healthy diet will help to boost your mood, give you more energy and stop you putting on weight over winter. Balance your craving for carbohydrates, such as pasta and potatoes, with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. 5. Light ‘em up… Some people find light therapy effective for seasonal depression. One way to get light therapy at home in winter is to sit in front of a light box for up to two hours a day. Light boxes give out very bright light at least 10 times stronger than ordinary home and office lighting. ey're not available on the NHS and cost around £100 or more. 6. Keep in touch - It's been shown that socialising is good for your mental health and helps ward off the winter blues. Make an effort to keep in touch with people and if you get invited out – say yes! 7. Get Support - Sharing your experience with others who know what it's like to have SAD is very therapeutic and can make your symptoms more bearable. Find a support group - SADA is the UK's only registered charity dedicated to SAD. It costs £20 (£10 for concessions) to join, and you'll receive an information pack, regular newsletters, discounts on products such as light boxes, and contacts for telephone support.

Denture Adventures..
E
xperiencing the world of denture wearing usually doesn’t mean a pleasant experience for most people. The journey that so many patients go through can be tough going. Part of the issue is that the treatments and outcomes are not fully explained along the way. We at Simply Dentures spend time to go through the options and desired results with each patient.
There are many different problems patients face on the journey. For example some comment that they have ended up with loose fitting teeth, especially lower dentures moving about. For others the dentures they have are worn down and it’s a new fresh smile they need. We have some of the latest most natural looking teeth available on the market today. Here you get
to speak direct to the boss who is the person who makes your new dentures as well as treat you clinically. Different options can be explored to discover what is best for you.
For those who have begun their denture journey there is the option to book in for a free 30 minute denture health check. This allows you to meet Peter Brookes, our clinical technician and get and honest opinion on the denture you have. The next step we take together in the adventure to advise on how we can best help.
For those with natural teeth then partial denture with supportive clasps maybe something that can be considered following your complimentary consultation. The solutions can come in a variety of different forms and may not cost as much as you feared. For those who would like the very best of denture stabilisation we can provide over-dentures on implants.
So perhaps your “Denture Adventure” hasn’t been a good one so far, why not give us a call at Simply Dentures and book your consultation to see how we can help you. Call our Roseville Clinic now on 01902 664634

Podiatry and Chiropody Care
Chiropodist or Podiatrist - What is the difference?
Podiatry is the modern term for professionals that also undertake routine medical based treatment of the foot and ankle. Be sure to check that your podiatrist has a full 3 year BSc Hons In Podiatric Medicine, for the Gold standard in Foot and Ankle treatment. This is a 3 year full time Science degree and requires dedication and significant training by the NHS and University to complete. Surprisingly, many of the those in the foot health market have many letters to accompany the qualifications, but are in fact very poorly qualified in comparison. Some with a distant learning course, part time by post! When looking for a podiatrist in Telford or Shrewsbury, ensure that you are visiting a well educated and skilled healthcare professional.
Why use General Podiatry Treatments?
Podiatry is very important, in the health of the population, as without your feet you can not walk! Staying active and mobile is important. Suffering and pain is often easily remedied. Of course Rheumatoid arthritis, Diabetic foot treatments are all important. But even the healthiest sports person can be incapacitated by athletes foot that becomes infected with bacteria, the healthiest pensioner can end in hospital with infective arthritis to the knee or ankle, after a simple corn becomes infected. I have patients, that have lost a limb due to these complaints! Worryingly, they were fit and healthy in all other aspects.
Podiatric Medicine - Trust in a professional.
Many people suffer needlessly with simple, often superficial foot complaints. I often mention to my patients, some of whom travel many miles to visit me, that a corn, hard skin or ingrowing toenail can be far more painful than any of the more "serious" complaints that I deal with each day. It is here that well skilled Professional Podiatry can assist as a routine and often regular treatment.
As a HCPC registered podiatrist and holder of a BSc (Hons) Pod Med, all of your foot complaints can be easily and comfortably treated. I hold full licence to issue antibiotics for nail and foot infections, as well as a high degree of skill in using local anaesthetic and steroid injections, to numb and make your treatment painless if required. In reality, this is rarely required! All clinical equipment is Vacuum Autoclaved, after thorough Ultrasonic cleansing, to provide the best in patient protection. Using the latest spray drill technology, your treatment and hard skin, is reduced quickly and perfectly every time. A podiatry treatment is thorough and addresses all medical conditions of the foot and ankle, this is not a buffing or low grade treatment, as offered by beauticians and the poorly qualified practitioners that tend to operate outside of the regulated healthcare environment.
Whether you need callous reduced and dry heels cured, corns removed, verrucae treated or ingrown nails removed in Telford, Newport, or Shrewsbury Shropshire - Call for an appointment sooner rather than later. I offer fair fees and high quality, gentle treatment.
If it is a foot, ankle or leg complaint then The Foot Doctor can help. To find out more visit www.TheFootDoctor.co.uk or call Steven Dowdeswell on 01952 677063 and take the first step to solving your foot and heel pain.

Local woman’s life saved after routine eye checkup uncovers life-threatening illness.......
A
woman from Madeley is teaming up with her local opticians to help raise awareness for the importance of regular eye tests, after a routine examination led to a potentially life saving discovery.
Jackie Ditchman, aged 28, visited John Biddle opticians in Madeley, after suffering from a visual blackout in both eyes. Jackie had also been suffering from severe headaches for over a year, which had previously been attributed to stress. However, the real cause of her symptoms was in fact far more severe.
Optometrist at John Biddle, Nilesh Patel, examined the back of Jackie’s eyes and discovered indications that Jackie may have been suffering from a build up of pressure behind her eyes. He immediately called the Acute Referral Clinic at Shrewsbury Hospital to book an emergency appointment that same day. It was here that it was discovered Jackie has in fact been suffering from a swollen optical disk as well as hemorrhaging behind both eyes. After a two week stay in hospital and following further examinations, it was then discovered that Jackie had benign intercranial pressure, a condition that if unchecked would have been fatal.
Speaking about her ordeal, Jackie, said: “I just can’t believe that after having suffered from these headaches for so long, there was such a dangerous condition lying undiagnosed for all of this time. Had I not gone to see Nilesh when I did, my symptoms could have been irreversible, or worse, I could have died.”
“I am so grateful to the team at John Biddles and hope that my story helps people realize just how important it is to have your eyes examined regularly!” Nilesh Patel said: "I am glad this was picked up before it was too late”
“It’s a perfect example of how something as seemingly innocuous as an eye examination can uncover underlying health issues and potentially save your life.“

Firework Phobia in Pets
Bonfire night is fast approaching, although for us this is an exciting time of year, the same cannot be said for our pets. Many animals will find the noise and flashes created from fireworks frightening and very stressful. There are several things that can be done to help keep our pets feeling calm and safe during this time, have a read through our advice and see what you can do help your pet. After all it’s not just for the one evening, firework season will continue over Christmas and New Year.
There are some basic things you can start with at home, including:
• Make sure all dogs and cats are kept inside, lock your cat flaps and keep all windows and doors tightly shut to prevent pets from escaping. • Keep curtains drawn and place on the TV and radio, this will help block out some of the sound and visual effects. • Create a den, our cats and dogs like to hide away to help make themselves feel more secure. Place in their favourite toys and something of yours, the familiar smells will help them a feel a little more at ease. You can create this den earlier so that your pet gets used to it. • Try to act normally! If they want to pace around a little and find new hiding spots let them. The more you stress around them, the more stressed they will become, if you are relaxed it will help them do so too. • It’s also a good time to make sure your pets identification details are up to date! Just in case they manage to escape. Check your microchip details, collars and tags to ensure that all the details are correct.
It’s not just our cats and dogs that get worried, don’t forget about your smaller pets too:
• This can include our rabbits, guinea pigs, rodents and birds! • If possible hutches/enclosures should be moved out of the open, whether this be a room in the house or just into a shed or garage. • If you are unable to move your pets hutch/enclosure cover over with blankets, this will help deaden the noise and block out the sight of the fireworks. You could also turn the opening of the hutch towards the fence/wall so it’s not facing the open garden. • Provide plenty of extra bedding to allow for effective burrowing, this will help them feel a little safer.
Sometimes these general precautions aren’t enough for our more nervous animals. There are lots of products on the market designed to help calm and relieve anxiety. These include Adaptil and Feliway products, that come in plug-in diffusers, sprays and collars. For more advice on which product might be best suited to your pets needs, please do not hesitate to speak to us at any of our Severn Edge Vet branches.
Also spare a thought for our wildlife this firework season! If you’re building bonfires check them before lighting to make sure there are no little friends hibernating inside. Make sure all firework rubbish is disposed of properly, if left around it can become a hazard.
