CafEé Rouge
Cafe Rouge Review_Double Page Editorial 23/01/2014 16:18 Page 1
Brindley Place in Birmingham is an incredibly beautiful area of the city, with its lovely water features, and is the perfect setting for this French style, café bistro restaurant. Nestled between the large water filled open square, and the fantastic canal side, Café Rouge definitely adds a lot of character to a picture perfect setting. --------My wife was wearing high heel shoes, and was very pleased when she discovered how close the car park was. Within seconds we had crossed the beautiful square and had arrived outside the atmospherically lit café. The ornate wall mounted street lights gave out a warm welcoming glow which really set the stage for what was to come. The outside of the building is surrounded by tables and chairs which allows you the chance to enjoy the sights and sounds of the locale. However, on this occasion we had booked a table inside the Café. --------We entered, and were greeted by our friendly waitress, Sandra, who escorted us to a lovely table which had the view of the Brindley Place square, showcasing the pretty water features. The décor was very pleasing to the eye and consisted of Laurel green walls, which had many pieces of art incased in heavy black frames. There was also a huge black corner book case, loaded with more pictures and elegant books. The mirrored wall at the far end of the café looked fantastic and reflected the light from the attractive lighting globes onto the wonderful wooden floor. --------The café has a very relaxed buzz, which we noticed as we looked at the drinks menu. I wanted something crisp and refreshing, so I ordered a Pinot Grigio Del Lago, and Sandra asked if I would like a large one, which of course I agreed to. My wife was driving, so opted for a soft drink but commented that she would have ordered a Chenin Blanc Des Anges, which is soft and fruity, with a ripe peach flavour. For our Hors D’oeuves we ordered the Pate Maison, which is a smooth chicken liver, shallot and Madeira pate that is served with seeded bread batons, and my wife opted for the Crevettes, which is king prawns served in a garlic and chilli butter. ---------
We decided that we would order our mains from the steak and grillades section of the menu, so Eileen, my wife chose the Fletan which is two wild halibut fillets served with herb and chilli salsa, and I thought that I would give the 10oz rib eye steak a try; medium cooked, and served with a peppercorn sauce, alongside an order of French fries. --------The pate was delightful, and I spread it onto the warm twisted bread batons like Monet mixing paint onto a palette! I glanced over to Eileen, who was enthusiastically sampling her plump and juicy King prawns, and it gave me a smile to think of how much we were enjoying the flavours. --------Next, the rib eye steak and the halibut arrived and we were amazed at how succulent and tasty they were. We both looked at each other’s order and we knew that there was no option but to share, because neither of us wanted to miss out on the taste sensation. The most amazing burst of flavour came from the herb and chilli salsa that accompanied the Fletan, it did a can-can on your taste buds with every bite! --------It was at this point that Sandra, the waitress asked if I would like another drink and I heartily agreed. I finished off the last of the French fries whilst enjoying the wine, and then Sandra took our orders for dessert. This next part was easy, because Eileen is a real fan of Crème Brulee, which is vanilla custard with a caramel topping and I love chocolate and ice cream so I picked the Fondant au Chocolat. The Crème Brulee was amazing, with the delicate crunch of the caramel, mixed with the smooth vanilla rounding Eileen’s meal off perfectly, and well what can I say about the Fondant au Chocolat, I am not sure that there are words to describe the delightful eruption of gooing chocolate, I would just say ‘try it for yourself!’. --------It was at this point, we realised that we were completely satisfied and full, and we ordered a coffee to round off the whole night. --------All in all, Café Rouge was a fantastic experience, and I can’t wait until we go again. After seeing a number of reviews in the local press for Buonissimo in Harborne all positive I may add, I was very keen to see what all the fuss was about.
My colleague, Stef and I finished work, and ventured into Harborne one a cold Monday evening, looking forward to our dining experience. As we pulled up, my eyes were instantly drawn to the well lit restaurant frontage, which was very inviting – very picturesque. Probably even more so in the Summer I imagine, with seating available outside.
As we entered we were warmly greeted by Matteo, the proprietor of Buonissimo for the last 14 years. We were escorted to our table, seated and handed the menus. The manner in which were greeted with, instantly put us both at ease. Whilst we perused the menu, I took time to take in the decor – it was fresh, modern and contemporary. There was so much variety on the menu, something for everyone’s pallet and we were still pondering, when Matteo came over with a glass of Aperol, an Italian aperitif for Stef, and asked if we need assistance with the menu which was great, especially as I in particular have some dietary restrictions – non meat and non alcoholic. Matteo took time to find out our likes, dislikes etc and recommended what he felt we would enjoy. We opted for the Misto di Bruschette alla Buonissimo, a platter of Bruschetta (grilled breads, with a variety of toppings) It consisted of Pane Rustico con Aglio al Forno Crusty rustic bread, served with a whole bulb of slowly baked fresh garlic. A must for garlic lovers! Bruschetta Melanzane e Prosciutto - Toasted ciabatta bread, topped with an aubergine mousse, crispy Parma ham and slow roast tomato. Bruschetta con Fagioli e Parmigiano - Warm ciabatta bread topped with cannellini bean salad and parmesan shavings. For starters I chose the Polpette Senza Carne - Homemade parmesan, mozzarella, tomato and basil-shaped fritters, served on a bed of arrabbiata tomato sauce, and Stef decided on Arrosto di Maiale con Polenta Outdoor-reared pork belly, cooked with chilli and red wine, served with roast vegetables and crisp polenta chips. A delicious and highly recommended dish! On to the mains – Stef couldn’t resist the Pollo con Pancetta e Porri -
Free-range chicken breast with bacon and leeks in a cream and wholegrain mustard sauce, served with potato wedges, broccoli and thyme roast carrot. Matteo spoke of a menu change in mid-Feb, and recommended I try a couple of the new dishes that are being launched on the spring menu. I went for a duet of Ravioli al Tartufo (Artisan filled pasta with ricotta and wild truffles in a cream, roast garlic and mushroom sauce, topped with rocket and parmesan) AND Gemelli Con Verdure Arrosto e Dolcelatte (Gemelli pasta in chilli, garlic and olive oil, with roast Mediterranean vegetables. Tossed with Dolcelatte and parmesan cheese) Wow…all that food to look forward to! Whilst we waited for the food, we were given a guided tour of the restaurant, and taken to the Mediterranean room upstairs, which is ideal for parties and special occasions with its own unique pop open bar - again beautifully decorated, and classy. Back downstairs – our first course was ready and we tucked straight in – the selection of bruschetta were some of the best I had tasted – the cannellini salad was fresh and tangy, the parma ham, aubergine and roast tomato was full of flavour, and what can I say about the roasted garlic? It was surprisingly sweet, and spread like pate on the bread – my personal favourite! Next were the starters - the pork belly for Stef and the mozzarella, parmesan and basil fritters for me. The pork belly was succulent with a crispy outer skin. Stef made very positive noises and said it ‘oozed’ flavour. The Pinot Grigio accompanied his starter perfectly! My fritters were cooked to perfection, full of flavour and the arrabbiata tomato sauce had a wonderful kick to it. My taste buds were doing the furlana on my tongue!
We were definitely ready for the main course, and we didn’t have to wait long – we dived straight in. The chicken breast wrapped in bacon had a smoky melt in the mouth texture, with a little kick to the sauce and the vegetables were a great accompaniment to the dish. All this whilst sipping on a glass of Terre Al Sole Primitivo. My two pasta dishes certainly lived up to expectation. The Pasta dishes were fresh, seasoned well, and had layers flavour in each bite full. The truffle gave the ravioli and air of elegance. We were full to the brim, however the desserts menu was too appetising to
ignore. I was told the popular choice with the locals was Panettone Pudding traditional sweet Italian sponge pudding, cooked in a way that will remind you of an upmarket bread and butter pudding, served warm with crème anglaise – it was devine! Warm, gooey, spongy, light…I’m running out of superlatives! Being a fan of chocolate, Stef had the Crespelle Ripiene di Mascarpone e Arancia – homemade crêpes filled with sweet mascarpone, chocolate and orange, served with vanilla ice cream – the plate looked like it was licked clean – enough said! Oh…and Stef finished off the whole experience with a dessert wine - Moscato Di Sicilia – lucky I was driving home! To summarise…the ambience was authentic, relaxed and friendly. The food was some of the most flavoursome that I had ever tasted, and the service was second to none.
“It was easy to see why in the 2013 Top Table Diners Choice awards, Buonissimo was named one of the Top 50 restaurants in the UK for service”. All in all a great night, and highly recommended!

Mytton & Mermaid Review_Double Page Editorial 23/01/2014 20:11 Page 1
The Mytton & Mermaid Hotel stands gracefully on the banks of the beautiful, meandering River Severn. This is a magnificent grade II listed building that has been tastefully decorated and captures the charms of its original coaching inn days, reflecting an atmosphere of comfort and tranquillity.
The Mytton & Mermaid has a renowned restaurant, so when I learned that we were going to carry out a review, I jumped at the chance! My colleague, Imran, and I pulled into the car park and sat for a moment to take in the impressive building and the glorious surrounding countryside, but the thought of the wonderful delights awaiting us soon drew our thoughts towards heading inside. We were greeted by the friendly front of house staff, who showed us to our table and brought some menus for us. We had chosen to visit during lunch, so opted for soft drinks, although there is an extensive wine list.
The restaurant is a lovely size, with a relaxed dining atmosphere. There are large dining areas that are ideal for the Weddings that are held at the hotel, which can be separated into smaller more intimate rooms, ideal for lunch. The décor is beautiful, with large plump leather sofas in comfortable seating areas, as well as long elegant tables set out for larger parties.
We had a choice from the main menu and a special lunchtime menu and were spoiled for choice. My eye was caught by a Chicken Liver and Tanners Port Parfait, with Apple and Thyme Jelly, Lambs Leaf Salad & Toasted Brioche and Imran was intrigued by the Balsamic Roasted Tomato and Red Pepper Soup, with Mozzarella Croute, Black Olive Tapenade and Basil Oil. While we waited for them to arrive we chatted and enjoyed the laid back atmosphere. The starters arrived and we could not wait to tuck in! The Parfait was so smooth and creamy in texture, with a wonderful flavour. The lambs leaf salad and tangy jelly, made the perfect partners, along with the lightly toasted brioche; it was delicious. From across the table I could hear regular groans of delight as Imran ate his soup; he was really enjoying the rich flavours of the roasted tomato and peppers, but the mozzarella, was the ‘cherry on top’ metaphorically speaking obviously!
The mouth-watering starters had really wet our appetites, and both of us were eager to try the main courses we had ordered. I had decided that the 8oz Sirloin Steak was definitely for me, and Imran had spotted Carrot, Roasted Nut and Parmesan Sausages. We didn’t have to wait very long at all before the mains arrived, looking absolutely amazing. My Sirloin was stunning and literally melted in my mouth; it came with the lightest
crispy Onion Rings, Watercress, Grilled Vine Tomato & Hand Cut Chips, but I opted for a fresh salad instead of chips as I had started my New Year’s diet! It was by no means an ‘ordinary’ salad and it was so tasty with sun dried tomatoes, I really enjoyed it. Imran’s Carrot, Roasted Nut and Parmesan Sausages, were accompanied by Sage and Onion Mash, Braised Savoy Cabbage, Baby Onions. He could not believe how scrumptious the sausages were, oozing with flavour and even asked if the chef was willing to let him in on his secret recipe. Although we were completely stuffed, Imran found the dessert menu too tempting to miss out on. He said to the waitress ‘well I ought to try the dessert, you know, for our readers’, but I really don’t think she was buying this! He went for a Sticky Toffee Pudding, Pecan and Butterscotch Sauce & Vanilla Pod Ice Cream. When it arrived, he seemed to find a new lease of life and eagerly set about devouring it, explaining to me with each mouthful how delightful it was.
The Mytton & Mermaid is a must visit, the location is brilliant, the staff are very professional and friendly and the food is absolutely stunning. I would definitely recommend The Mytton Mermaid to anyone who enjoys good food. You will definitely want to go back again and again, I know I do. Reviewed by Eileen Callear

THE HUSBANDS Kali Theatre and Pentabus Theatre present: By Sharmila Chauhan
Against a backdrop of modern rural India, The Husbands is an explosive new play about love, jealousy and a woman’s right to choose.
It’s Aya’s wedding day. Her third. Her current two husbands aren’t too fussed. In a society in which there are few women, that’s just what happens. But as the household prepares for the wedding feast, a stranger arrives – one who threatens to challenge everything they believe in. The Husbands is a provocative new play from award winning Kali Theatre and Pentabus Theatre.
The Husbands is an imaginative response to the real issue of female infanticide that has become widespread in rural India. Girls are seen as a drain on precious family resources, whereas sons are seen as valuable assets; so girl babies are routinely aborted or quietly killed soon after birth. The result is a serious lack of young women and in some villages it’s becoming increasingly common for two men or more to share one wife. Sharmila Chauhan imagines a society where this
has become the norm and then weaves a moving tale of love, jealousy and power using vivid, poetic language to show this extraordinary but believable new world.
From the preparation of luxury food and the sacrifice of the lamb to the dressing of the bride and the dance to end all dances, this will be an exuberant, joyful and challenging piece of theatre. Writer Sharmila Chauhan was shortlisted for the Asian New Writer award and chosen for the Royal Court's Critical Mass programme. Her short stories have been published online and in print, including Tell Tales Vol 2 and Happy Birthday to Me. She is also a pharmacologist, so her work life mixes medicine, prose and plays.
Sharmila comments ‘In parts of India, polyandry has become a necessity. I wrote The Husbands both as a response to this but also as an exploration of the complexities of love, intimacy and trust between one woman and three men. In a sense this play is as much a warning as an allegory for the fate of women in The West today.’ The Husbands is directed by Janet Steel, Artistic Director of Kali. Janet Steel has directed over 30 readings of new work and 11 productions for Kali. After many years as an actress, Janet began directing in 1988 at Loose Change Theatre. Other directing credits include Behzti (The Rep), April in Paris, Bretevski Street, A Hard
Rain, Top Girls (Northampton Royal), Millennium Mysteries, Big School (Belgrade Coventry).
Pentabus is a contemporary theatre company, producing original plays about the rural world for local and national audiences. Based on a farm in Shropshire, we make theatre that digs deep into the psyche of the English countryside. Our shows are playful, political and compassionate, offering rural audiences work that is made especially for, and speaks directly to, them. We then take these plays on the road, touring around the country, telling stories that are born locally, but resonate nationally. Our productions turn up at festivals, in fields and in theatres, reaching our audience wherever they may be. To find out more visit www.pentabus.co.uk
Kali presents ground breaking theatre writing by South Asian women. They seek out and nurture strong individual writers who challenge our perceptions through original and thought-provoking theatre. Kali has won rave reviews, sell-out performances and inspired audiences all over the UK with work that reflects and comments on our lives. Touring nationally February and March 2014. Michael Bublé brings his live Arena Tour to the NIA in Birmingham on the 12th & 13TH March 2014 Michael Bublé announced details of his return to the UK as he takes his live experience to Birmingham’s NIA.
Michael Bublé is still riding high in the charts with the ongoing success of his current album ‘To Be Loved’ – the album was his first to go straight to #1 in the UK with first week sales of 120,000 and passed the 200,000 mark just three weeks later. The album has also topped the charts in numerous other nations including the USA and his homeland of Canada with worldwide sales in excess of 2 million.
michael bublé
In his biography Michael says: “I think it’s the best album I’ve ever made…I know every artist on earth says that when their new album is coming out but really - this time it’s true. I swear.
You can ask my mother. But don’t take my word for it or my mom’s. Play it yourself and you’ll see and hear I’m telling the honest truth. I want to take you on a wonderful journey about love – all different kinds of love.
The album swings big time – it rocks – it’s soulful – it’s happy –sometimes a little sad - it’s romantic – it’s yummy and it’s heartfelt.
Do not think I take my success these last ten years for granted. I was anything but an overnight sensation which inspires me to deliver big time for my fans – maybe even make some new ones this time out. Trust me, there’s no sitting back, no dialing in for me. I labored over every song, every note and every arrangement because I can’t resist trying to make each record better than my last one. It helps that I’m pretty happy in my life at the moment and feel that I’ve really grown a lot as a songwriter and interpreter of great songs. On “To Be
Loved” I felt a new sense of freedom to create and kind of take things further – maybe take a few risks and dig deep to find some gems. None of these songs would be what they were without the help of my partner in crime, the great Bob Rock who helped me realize all my dreams with the songs on “To Be Loved”. He is a producer extraordinaire and was there 1000 percent every day we were recording. Special thanks go to the vocal talents of Naturally 7, The Puppini Sisters and The Dap Kings for perfecting the sound I was trying to create. I don’t know if people even read these things so if you’ve gotten this far, thank you for taking the time. I know I sing better than I write but I wanted you to understand a little bit about what I wanted to accomplish with “To Be Loved”. I hope you love my record. See you on the road.” Love, Michael. ALI REZURECTION G
Booyakasha!!! Ali G is back, innit! Back on the small screen with the rezurection of Da Ali G Show!
Sacha Baron Cohen has been recording new Ali G material for the first time in over six years after signing a deal with FXX comedy channel. The 42-year-old comedian has agreed to record introductions which will air before old episodes of Da Ali G Show as part of the Ali G: Rezurection season on Fox’s FXX comedy channel. The recording of new material forms part of a deal which will give FXX the first option on new ideas by Sacha.
Ali G was retired in 2007, although he made a brief reappearance in 2012, when he appeared on stage at the British Comedy Awards to pick up Sacha’s Outstanding Contribution Award but as always caused a stir with jokes about Kate
Middleton and Jimmy Savile.
Ali G, a boorish, uneducated, faux-streetwise character with a deeply stereotypical view of the world, first came to our screens on Channel 4's The 11 O'Clock Show as the "voice of da yoof" in 1998. He interviewed various public figures, embarrassing the interviewee with masses of political incorrectness and getting them to agree to all kinds of insults. Examples of his bold interviewing style include getting Lindsay Urwin, the Bishop of Horsham, to admit that God created the Universe, and then asking him, "And since then, he's just chilled?"
In an interview with the Chairman of the Arts Council of England Gerry Robinson Ali G's first question was: "Why is the arts so - excuse me French, but - crap?"
The funniest one for me was his interview with the Beckhams, for comic relief. David was picked on straight away. 'Now, just
because it's Comic Relief doesn't mean you can speak in a silly voice,' said Ali . Victoria was left speechless by a conversation about her son Brooklyn. 'So how old is Brooklyn now?' Ali asked. 'He's nearly two,' replied Victoria. 'So tell me, is your little boy starting to put whole sentences together?' 'He's learning the bits and pieces, so yeah.' 'And what about Brooklyn?'
He went on to ask her about a recent bout of illness ‘Posh me heard you recently ad a disease of de head, called mingingitis, are you better now?’, Victoria replied ‘I had viral meningitis, but yeah i’m better now’. Ali quickly replies ‘so did sporty catch the mingingitis from you then? cos she as got it well bad!’ Me for one is well looking forward to seeing Ali G back. Things as not been the same wivout him.Big up the Wes Side Massive, Aight!! Ali G: Rezurection Debuts in February

Beyonce Mrs Carter Tour_Double Page Editorial 10/01/2014 11:10 Page 1
That the album was available on the day the world learned about its release was an unprecedented strategic move by the artist to deliver music and visual content directly to her fans when she wants to and how she wants to, with no filter. This unique approach allows music fans to be the first to listen, view, engage and form their own opinions void of any middleman. In the age of social media and an insatiable appetite for direct communication, it was the answer to the question asked over and over again, when was Beyoncé’s next album coming?
“ I didn’t want to release my music the way I’ve done it,” she explained. “I am bored with that. I feel like I am able to speak directly to my fans. There’s so much that gets between the music, the artist and the fans. I felt like I didn’t want anybody to give the message when my record was coming out. I just want this to come out when it’s ready and from me to my fans.” Stripped of gimmicks, teasers and marketing campaigns, this project is truly about art before hype. Not one to stand on past achievements, this is an artist who thrives on evolving, challenging herself and raising the bar. This creative process gave Beyoncé power over her music and provided an opportunity to control how the music is heard. She is not playing by the rules and breaking what is expected, preferring to put music out as an entire body of work. Beyoncé, wearing multiple hats as writer, producer and director, put together a genius team of artists, songwriters, producers and video directors for her visual album that include JAY Z, Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, Pharrell Williams, Drake, The Dream, Sia, Ryan
For the videos, some of which she co-directed, she preferred to work with a more care-free formula. Shot primarily during her successful “Mrs. Carter Show World Tour”. The videos are visually stimulating, charged with visionary cinematography and clever storytelling. They capture every side of who she is, complete with vulnerability and even her imperfections, YES even Bey has some!!
The “Mrs. Carter Show World Tour” is now on its way to the UK, with Queen Bey kicking things off in Glasgow on 20th February, playing 12 dates across the UK including 2 at Birmingham’s LG Arena.
Beyonce's new UK 2014 February and March tour dates are as follows:
{ February 23 - LG Arena, Birmingham { February 24 - LG Arena, Birmgingham { February 25 - Manchester Arena, Manchester { February 26 - Manchester Arena, Manchester { February 28 - The O2, London { March 1 - The O2, London { March 2 - The O2, London { March 4-6 - The O2, London

“I see music,” says Beyoncé about her decision to create a visual album. “It’s more than just what I hear. When I’m connected to something, I immediately see a visual or a series of images that are tied to a feeling or an emotion, a memory from my childhood, thoughts about life, my dreams or my fantasies. And they’re all connected to the music.”
Tedder, Miguel, Frank Ocean, Hit Boy, Ammo, Boots, Detail, Jake Nava, Hype Williams, Terry Richardson, Melina Matsoukas, Jonas Åkerlund, Ricky Saiz, Pierre Debusschere, @lilinternet, Noah “40” Shebib, Francesco Carrozzini, Caroline Polachek, Ed Burke, Bill Kirstein and Todd Tourso.
WELL HELLO...Mrs Carter!
Beyoncé will be performing tracks from her 'surprise' 2013 album, which is self-titled. The album features collaborations with husband Jay-Z, daughter Blue Ivy, Drake and Frank Ocean among others. The album is 14 tracks long, but as a visual album, comes with an additional 17 videos.

THE HYPE - ROMANTIC DESTINATIONS
PARIS 1 That’s AMORE!
Paris, the city of love, who could question that? It really is a city for lovers, for strolls along the Seine, sipping coffee at a café, and for picture-perfect moments in romantic neighbourhoods like Montmartre. Then there's the Champs Elysees, the Eiffel Tower lit up at night, and the many, many gardens like the Jardin du Luxembourg. In Paris, love is in the air everywhere you look around.
ROME 3 Monte Belle
Rome stirs the senses, evoking images of gladiators and ancient times; Rome is one of the world's most dazzling cities. Lovers sit by its many fountains to throw coins as they make a wish, share gelatos and sip cappuccinos in the middle of beautiful piazzas, all while soaking in three thousand years of history. In Rome, life really is dolce.
LAS VEGAS 5 Viva Las Vegas
You might wonder why Las Vegas? Well with an average of 315 weddings a day it is the marriage capital of the world. Iconic spots such as the drive-through altar at the Little White Chapel and the Graceland Wedding Chapel are must see sights on the Vegas map, even if tying the knot is not part of your plans! Not only that, Las Vegas has got all of the other top romantic cities, all rolled into one. There is the Eiffel tower at the Paris hotel, the indoor gondolas at the Venetian hotel, the dramatic Caesar’s Palace with its glorious Roman themes and the wonderful New York New York. I got married in the Little White Chapel and would recommend it to anyone, it was an amazing experience!
Romantic Cities_Double Page Editorial 10/01/2014 14:55 Page 2
VENICE 2 Just One Cornetto
Venice always seems like a bit of a miracle to me, more like something from a Hollywood set, for the backdrop of a romantic film, than a real city. Thank goodness it’s not just from a movie, as it would most likely not capture the fairy tale that it is in reality. Canals and stunning architecture, what could be more romantic than a gondola ride, or a walk over narrow bridges, getting lost through the narrow lanes, and ending up at monumental square? If you're not in love already, you will be.
NEW YORK 4 The Big Apple
The "Capital of the world" lives up to that title. From Wall Street to Broadway, there is always something going on in the city that never sleeps, new restaurants opening to share all of the world's cuisines, what’s not to love. From pizzerias in little Italy to walking through Central Park in the snow, it doesn’t get much more romantic! Trendsetting New York is the city everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime.

John Biddle Opticians (JBO) is an independent, established in 1972 and remains in the same ownership today (but with a younger team). Young and experienced. A nice combination.
The Optometrist determines whether the eyes require visual correction, and is the front line in monitoring eye health, and specialises in contact lenses. The Dispensing Optician specialises in interpreting the prescription, and recommends a choice of lens solutions, and is experienced in assisting with frame selection (with reference to the type of lenses and facial features), and also possesses the skills necessary to manipulate and adjust the fitting of the frame to the head to satisfy all visual and aesthetic requirements. Independent Opticians differentiate themselves from the High Street multiples by their passion for the job; in understanding your individual optical needs and recommending appropriate solutions from a wide range of products. If there is a belief that independent Opticians are more expensive than the High Street multiple Opticians - it is not really true. We have frames and lenses starting from £29 a pair (free if you qualify for an NHS optical voucher). Of course you can pay more, as with everything else from cat food to cars. The difference with an independent is that they have access to ALL the latest products and will explain their features and benefits when relevant to you. After all, with vision, everyone deserves, at least, to be offered the best solution.
Then you can make an informed choice, based on understanding and affordability.
Conventional distance or reading glasses were the only choice for a long time; for hundreds of years with very little or no change, and in the case of bifocals from about 1875. Today, technology has enabled truly amazing improvements in vision correction, including improvements to contact lenses, all of which can make a real difference. An independent Optician is at the forefront of understanding this technology and making it available to you, if appropriate. Ultimately, the choice is yours, but a decision is better made when your personal options are explained by someone willing and able to spend the time doing so with you. If you have any questions or would like to arrange a free consultation, please call 01952 587423 or e-mail admin@johnbiddleopticians.com
Quotes from customers: “Just a quick e-mail to say thank you again for the excellent personal service you showed me recently when I renewed my glasses. It was a pleasure doing business with you, from the initial consultation through to the eye examination, and finally the appointment to have my new glasses checked and fitted. You displayed a level of personal and professional service that certainly wasn’t matched by almost all the other opticians in Shrewsbury. I must admit I had left you until last, as I had presumed you to be
somewhat expensive compared to the competition, but I guess that proves the old adage - you get what you pay for. However from the moment I walked into your branch I realised my money would be best spent with you. The young lady who is on reception has a manner that almost all receptionists could benefit from copying. She has such a welcoming smile and attitude, it just reassures you that you will be well looked after. She admirably proves that old fashioned service doesn’t have to be ‘old fashioned’. Having a courtesy call before my appointment was also a nice touch, thank you. Rest assured that I will continue to come to you for all future eye tests and glasses - unless any of you leave, then I’ll just have to hope you will train your replacements to exactly the same high standards”. Mrs Rene B, Shrewsbury “I’d like to say a big thank you on behalf of my Mrs G. Your optician’s thorough test revealed a tumour behind her eyes. She has now been given the all clear and her doctor says that your speedy and accurate intervention has undoubtedly prevented a much worse situation from developing. Our heartfelt thanks” Mr G. If you’re a smoker, the thought of quitting is somewhat daunting and usually gets pushed right to the back of your mind along with the in-law’s birth dates and many other things. But it seems that smokers have finally been given a big helping hand in the battle – the electronic cigarette.
Electronic cigarettes are a smoke free device that mimic real cigarettes, but instead of inhaling tobacco smoke the user inhales flavoured vapour. The vapour is produced via a battery powered heating element which heats the E-liquid to the correct temperature to create a vapour. There’s no fire, no ash and no smoky smell, but the best part- they don’t contain the harmful chemicals associated with smoking tobacco cigarettes, such as carbon monoxide and tar.
Now Cartridge World in Oxley has brought the No-Match range of electronic cigarettes to Wolverhampton, with a “Try before you buy” policy. Customers can try any of the No-Match liquids in store before purchase to make sure they get a flavour and strength they are happy with. All liquid flavours are available in different nicotine strengths ranging from zero up to 3.6%. Aside from the obvious health benefits over regular cigarettes, No Match
electronic cigarettes also allow you to smoke inside venues such as pubs, shopping centres and at work etc. as E-cigarettes are not subject to the smoking ban. They also offer huge cost savings. One bottle of liquid will last the average “Pack–a-day” smoker seven to ten days. With the average pack of 20 cigarettes costing £7 this works out at saving over £150 a month. Cartridge World brought the No Match range into stock as it fits with the quality ethos of their cartridge range. At the moment the electronic cigarette industry is relatively un-regulated, but this will certainly change in the future and No Match are staying one step ahead of regulatory changes with all products being CE certified and RoHS certified. The No-Match brand offers over 125 different flavours in the range including around 25 different tobacco flavours which replicate the major tobacco brands, but also have flavours such as cherry, toffee, blueberry and Red Bull flavour. The key to giving up regular cigarettes is finding a liquid and strength that fits your particular taste and with Cartridge World stocking around 70 of the No Match flavours at present, you’re sure to find something suitable.

According to Time Magazine, 60% of gym memberships are wasted every year, I know mine was last year! Try to avoid being in that number by rewarding yourself for small victories like treating yourself to a manicure or massage for every five pounds you lose.
Small goals are more easy to achieve and help to keep a more positive attitude, this in turn helps to stop you from feeling overwhelmed by the bigger goal. Besides, you are not going to see dramatic results overnight. On average, it takes about 4-6 weeks to see results from a newly implemented regular exercise program. Oftentimes, the problem with this resolution is that the diet is too extreme or restrictive to maintain on a regular basis. Instead of completely overhauling your diet on January 1st, focus on making one sustainable change each month. For example, strive to drink eight glasses of water a day for the month of January, then add to that change and eat dinner before 8 p.m. in February. Eat healthy-er, but allow yourself a special treat on Sundays. By December, you’ll definitely have a reason to be proud of yourself.
A new study also says that you’re more likely to have dieting success if you don’t tell people about it. Hearing their positive responses could subconsciously reward you with a feeling of accomplishment that takes away your brain’s desire to actually achieve something, so keep your diet on the down low!

The average smoker attempts to quit four times before they succeed, and only 15% of those who quit remain smoke-free after 6 months. To give yourself the best chance of being one of the successful ‘quiters’ try the following tips.
Use nicotine patches, gum, and/or candy to curb cravings, rather than trying to go cold turkey. Also, many successful ex-smokers swear by the slightly painful “rubber band method.” To do this, snap a rubber band on your wrist whenever you have a craving.
If you can stand the discomfort, your brain will eventually associate the craving with unpleasantness.

10. Ask for credentials from any salesperson who requests entry to your home. Ask that their ID be pushed under the door. Many professional burglars use this cover to check out homes. If you're doubtful, check with the person's office before letting him or her in.
TOP TIPS TO KEEP YOUR HOME SAFE FROM BURGLARS It’s something that most of us dread happening, coming home to find out that some criminal has broken in to our home and riffled through our most personal belongings. Even worse, are the stories of people being burgled
whilst they are asleep! We should be able to relax and feel safe within our own homes, and the thought that we sometimes aren’t is difficult to accept. Just lately, I have noticed that the news and Facebook have been full of stories of people being broken into. I recently read an article in the news explaining that burglary had risen over the Christmas period at a higher level than usual, maybe because of the economic issues facing the nation, but whatever the reason, it still left me a little more worried. Just before Christmas, my colleague had exactly this happen to him. He had a family get together at home and with all the different comings and goings, they had managed to go to bed and the back door had been left unlocked. While they were asleep, someone had simply walked in and took laptops and some bank cards etc. He was gutted, not just because the insurance won’t pay out if you have left a door unlocked, but because while they slept, someone had helped themselves to their hard earned belongings and intruded on their personal space. For weeks his wife didn’t feel safe and could barely sleep at night. Professional burglars are near impossible to stop, but a high percentage of burglaries are carried out by opportunists and amateurs. A few simple steps can help to reduce your chances of being their next victim and keep your home safe and secure, from these kinds of burglars. With this in mind I decided that I would put together some TOP TIPS FOR KEEPING YOUR HOME SECURE.
1. Lock up your home, even when you are home or if you go out only for a short time. Many burglars just walk in through an unlocked door or window. This means no matter how good your insurance is, they won’t pay out!
2. For alarm systems to be effective, it is best to conceal all wiring. A professional burglar looks for places where he or she can disconnect the security system. Get your system fitted by a reputable firm. 3. Change all the locks when you move into a new house.
4. Make it look like you are in at all times. Use timers to switch lights and radios on and off when you're not at home.
5. Get a deadbolt lock, this will prevent a burglar from “loiding” (a method used on spring-latch locks, where a credit card is slipped against the latch tongue to unlock the door), which cannot be used if a
deadbolt is in place.
6. If you lose, or even mislay a set of keys, get the locks changed! Again insurance does not cover burglaries where access has been gained by use of a key to the property.
7. If you have to pop out, but are expecting a delivery or someone is due to call round, don’t leave a huge note attached to your door telling everyone you are not in, it may as well say “Dear Burglar, Help Yourself!” 8. Security lights are a must, not only do they make life easy on dark nights but they will put off a burglar too, as they like to skulk around in the dark, unseen.
9. Don’t leave a key under the doormat! Or any other obvious place like under the plant pot etc... If you really need to leave a key for emergencies, wrap the key in foil -- or put it in a small container and bury it
11. Dogs are good deterrents to burglars. Even a small, noisy dog can be effective burglars do not like to have attention drawn to their presence. Be aware, however, that trained guard dogs do not make good pets! 12. To help burglar-proof your home, install 1-inch throw deadbolt locks on all exterior doors.
13. If there are door hinges on the outside of your house, take down the door and reset the hinges inside. Otherwise all a thief has to do to gain entry to your home is knock out the hinge pin. 14. You can burglar-proof your glass patio doors by setting a pipe or metal bar in the middle bottom track of the door slide. The pipe should be the same length as the track, it will stop the door sliding. 15. Replace rotted door frames with new, solid wood.
16. It's simple for a thief to break glass panels and then reach in and open a doorknob from the inside. A door with glass panels should ideally be replaced, or secured with deadbolts that can only be opened with a key. Don’t leave keys in the locks of doors or windows.
17. Protect your windows with one or more good locks. When installing window locks, drip some solder on the screw heads. It will stop a burglar from unscrewing the lock after cutting a small hole in the windowpane.
18. Take out some insurance, as I said before, if you are unlucky enough to be targeted by a professional burglar, there is every chance that they will succeed. It is well worth covering your possessions for this. Just make sure you follow all of the precautions necessary as lots of insurers won’t pay out if you have failed to secure your property properly. Hope this helps to keep you all stay safe! Written by Eileen Callear
