Hythe Watch News from Hy tHe towN CouNCil

Message from the  Town Mayor We have just enjoyed another marvellous Hythe Festival week with a diverse range of activities to suit every taste. Hythe town mayor Cllr Paul Peacock My heartfelt thanks go to all the organisers and contributors who have again given both residents and visitors a splendid insight into our thriving community. One of the final events was a stirring parade to commemorate Armed Forces Day. As our town has strong links with the Army, it’s also no surprise that the Hythe Ranges open day was a great highlight in the festival programme. As town mayor I was also asked to present prizes at the annual shooting competitions and in particular the winners of the 2018 Lord Lieutenant’s Falling Plate Shooting event, which was hotly contested between serving members and private gun clubs. It was clear that all attending had a great day and will be back to challenge the results next year. Alongside all the fun and festivities, we have all baked in unrelenting temperatures and local social media sites have often highlighted the plight of wildlife when the baked ground makes food scarce. Apart from garden birds, our hedgehogs, moles, bats, badgers, foxes and the controversial gull population have all suffered with lack of access to water, worms and insects. I think all the local vets have worked hard with wildlife casualties and I am grateful to the local rescuers who work tirelessly to help. Floral displays may be wilting but the slugs and snails are staying away as drying up means certain death. It’s not very often that you look out of the window and hope to see a bit of rain! New silk Hythe ties are now available to buy from Oaklands. They feature the Hythe crest repeated across the tie and would make a lovely gift for all who love our special town. They are being sold at cost, this is not a profit making project. To buy your tie just pop in to Oaklands office and speak to Margaret. Payment is £15 either cash or cheque to the Mayor of Hythe’s Benevolent Fund. Councillor’s Corner Ellie Cumming I am delighted to have been elected as town councillor for Hythe East ward. I am grateful to Councillor Ellie Cumming those who voted for me, and thankful for the great job done by everyone involved in the by-election campaign. I am greatly looking forward to the job working alongside my fellow councillors to make a difference for the town and its residents. I am full of enthusiasm and ideas about how I can help; the tricky bit might be prioritising my actions into the most important areas. I live in the town, and over the last few weeks of the campaign in particular, I have become increasingly involved with the residents of Seabrook, making good friends with many there, and I feel really privileged to have this opportunity to contribute to the community. As an individual, I am limited in what I can do. I will aim to work with my fellow councillors and residents to do what I can to influence council decisions. You might not agree with every voting decision I make, but I pledge that whatever I do as your elected town councillor, I will always act in the best interests of the residents.

10-mile race  Known as the ‘Folkestone 10’, the race has become regionally famous since it started in 1984. Organised by Folkestone Running Club, the annual 10-mile race starts and ends at Hythe Green, and takes runners along Marine Parade and Princes Parade toward Folkestone and then back to Hythe. It’s difficult to imagine after a long, dry summer, but it poured with rain all day on Good Friday. The event attracted a record 800 participants who splashed through heavy rain on their A record 800 runners ran this year’s 10-mile race in return trip to Hythe Green. the pouring rain. Unfortunately the vehicles used to transport the equipment caused temporary damage to grass of Hythe Green but thankfully it soon recovered. The town council provided free use of Hythe Green, Hythe Rotary provided most of the marshals, and Hythe Bay School provided a venue for the race headquarters. This year, the running club made a donation of £100 to the town mayor’s mayor charity fund, so even non-runners benefited from the event. It’s easy to enter for the 2019 race; just click through to www.folkestone10mile.co.uk/enter-online/ and fill in your details.

End of World War 1 commemoration Very soon, the nation will be united in commemorating the end of the horrific First World War. With hindsight, the military tactics and politics of the time seemed to be based in the 1800s, while the technology advances in military weaponry were very clearly 20th century. Visitors to the Hythe museum can see some of the weapons from the period (all safely disabled, you’ll be pleased to know) and envisage the terrors of being a soldier during that war. Hythe has deep military connections, and the town council will be joining in the commemorations. On the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War, on 11th November at 11:00, the town will fall silent again in tribute to those who fell in the war and in others since.

Perspective view looking west along the canal, showing how the poppy will enhance the war memorial.

A team of volunteers and councillors has been working on a WW1 centenary commemoration project. The aim is to enhance the war memorial (if you’re not sure where it is, it’s on the north bank of the Royal Military Canal next to Ladies Walk bridge). Subject to heritage and planning consent, the memorial will gain a unique inlaid poppy design which is intended to add to the poignancy of the memorial and be a tribute to those who gave their lives. Hythe Town Council is also working with a number of military organisations to ensure that the town respectfully plays its part in what will be a national event. Later in the evening, a brazier will be lit and blaze out over Hythe Bay, with an accompanying spectacular firework display. These tributes will be free to attend, and all residents and visitors are welcome. No doubt those of us who attend will be thankful to those who died or were maimed, and reflective about war’s terrible consequences. The team has successfully obtained over £15,000 in grant donations so far. If you would like to donate an amount, please contact  admin@Hythe-tc.gov.uk and we’ll let you know how you can help.

Car boots

Flagging

It’s been another great season of car boot sales. We know from our web analytics that the dates of the year’s events on Hythe Green are eagerly anticipated. It’s also something that the council is glad to support. It gives entrepreneurs a low-risk path into the world of buying and selling, gives people a chance to clear out the clutter, and gives buyers an opportunity to pick up a bargain. The council made it even better this year by paying for portable toilets for each event. What’s not to like? The answer is the parking: that’s what upsets so many residents. Sometimes, the nearby roads get cluttered with vehicles on both sides. What if there were to be an emergency? How would the fire trucks or ambulances get down if there is no room? We’re delighted that the car boot sales are so popular, but if you possibly can, please use public transport or walk to Hythe Green. You’ll avoid all the stresses of trying to find a parking space, you won’t have to pay for fuel, and you’ll give yourself some free extra exercise. Now that’s something to like.

There comes a time in everybody’s life when you feel like the old threads have got a bit worn, you can see your colour draining away and you feel the need for a bit of reinvigoration. And so it proved for the Hythe town flag. Proudly flown on days when the town is in celebratory mood, such as during the Hythe Festival or for mayor making, the flag incorporates the seal of the corporation of Hythe Town Council. The design of the seal shows an antique cog (a 13th century ship used for both transport and as a warship), fitted with towers fore and aft. It has a single mast and shows three men on it: one is blowing a horn; and two men are lying on the yard arm. The inscription in Latin around the edge is “SIGILLUM COMMUNE BARONUM DE HETHE” which means, “the common seal of the barons of Hythe”. Over the years, different backgrounds to the seal have included white, brown, blue and a dark red. The new flag that you see flying from the town hall is on a white field, which we think shows it off to its best advantage.

If you go down to the woods today … The Teddy Bears’ picnic is always a favourite part of the Hythe Festival. This year, classes from local primary school, parents and carers with preschool children had a terrific time dancing, playing and listening to music at Oaklands Park. Held during the Hythe Festival, the picnic is always a favourite, and this year was no exception.

Good old-fashioned fun at the Teddy Bears’ picnic

The generations game

Cllr Laura Sullivan, Helen Calvert from Salus, students and teachers from Brockhill Park Performing Arts College and St. Augustine’s Catholic Primary School.

Research conducted by Hythe Town Council about 18 months ago investigated how different generations experienced teenage life. Hythe Town councillor, Laura Sullivan, said, “What came out of the survey was interesting. For example, while some young people get more pocket money today, it was easier in the 40s and 50s for teenagers to get Saturday jobs and other casual work.”  The research showed that different age groups enjoy many similar things such as music, sport and poetry. Tastes may vary but there are definitely common interests. Hythe has a lively older population who are learning to play the ukulele, painting, practising tai chi and joining walking groups, while younger people also play sport and listen to music – just different kinds. Hythe Town Council worked with Age UK, Salus (a local youth project), Brockhill Park School and Hythe Bay School to put on an event celebrating all the different generations that live and play in Hythe. Young people shared their poetry, sang in a choir and performed a pirates’ dance. Social care students served cream teas, and Age UK members took part in a ukulele class. Hopefully this will be the first of many intergenerational events on these lines. If you have any ideas on how we could improve upon this year’s event, contact the Town Council before the end of September.

Sit and listen to the band

A Hythe Town Council contractor installed the new seating at Oaklands in April 2018.

The music might be fantastic, and that’s all very well if you have somewhere to sit. But what happens if you want to attend one of the amazing free concerts running all summer in Oaklands Park but the grass is wet? The council provides portable seating for hundreds of people, but for popular shows, sometimes all the seats are taken. This year, we commissioned three permanent, comfortable benches for concert-goers. In between concerts, the council expects the seats will be used by picnickers and others who just want a comfortable place to sit and have a chat or to watch their children play.

New councillor elected for Hythe East ward In a closely fought three-way election, Cllr Ellie Cumming was elected at the by-election on 24th May 2018. While all the candidates were passionate in their campaign messages, it was pleasing to see that they were respectful of opposing views. Hythe Town councillors are not paid and work hard. They must study background papers, attend regular committee and council meetings and sometimes have to make difficult and controversial decisions. So why do they do it? Simply this: they want to do a good job for the town. If you think you could contribute, if you think you could do a better job than the existing councillors, consider standing at the next elections in May 2019. You don’t have to be a member of a political party, and you don’t have to have any existing council connections. If you’re interested, make an appointment to call into the council offices at Oaklands in Stade Street, and we’ll listen to any questions you might have.

It could be you

A defibrillator gives a high energy electric shock to the heart through the chest wall to someone who is in cardiac arrest. It’s an essential lifesaving step in the chain of survival.

Exercise is good for your heart, lungs and muscles. It keeps you mobile and tones your body. You don’t need the council to tell you that. Along with healthy eating, regular exercise is a major contribution to your own long life and reducing the burden on the NHS. But what would happen if you came across someone with a heart problem – perhaps a suspected cardiac arrest? How could you help? Of course, the first thing to do in any real emergency is to ring 999. The NHS staff can talk you through what to do next. In case there is an emergency on the football fields at South Road, Hythe Town Council has installed a defibrillator in the sports pavilion. If required, the defibrillator would give a high energy electric shock to the heart through the chest wall to someone who is in cardiac arrest. It’s a technique that’s proven to save lives – and it could be yours.

Shore up

children’s learning on the beach Margaret Travers

Children are naturally hot-wired to show curiosity. if parents truly follow their child’s interests they will be supporting learning in a big way. really simple outdoor activities promote learning and progress. encourage children’s understanding of quantity, height, shape, space, distance and speed. exploring and playing are the key ingredients to support learning in school. Here are some suggestions: Playing with pebbles on the beach Children naturally learn mathematical skills when they play outdoors. Playing outdoors is crucial all year round, not just for developing physical skills and getting fresh air, but because children will develop really great maths skills. On the beach When you take your children to the beach, watch them pick up and look at the stones. Some have holes, some are tiny, they are all very different in shape, size, and texture. Children love to feel them, sort them, place them on sandcastles, and make towers with them. They enjoy putting them into buckets and skimming them into the sea. All this play promotes fantastic mathematical and scientific thinking! Give your children time and space, follow their interests, don’t take over, just encourage. Show curiosity alongside your child.

For instance, you can: • Compare the weight, shape and size of the different pebbles; comparisons are vital maths skills, and crucial in school when children start to calculate.

• Children will love exploring pebbles in a bucket of water, watching them float or sink; this promotes a scientific perception of density. Whether an object floats or sinks depends on its density. Density is how tightly packed the material inside an object is. Just

“Children will love exploring pebbles in a bucket of water, watching them float or sink; this promotes a scientific perception of density.” • Explore textures and colours, describe the stones for your child (“rough, smooth, lumpy, bumpy, heavy, light” etc) and then point out the flecks of colour and patterns on the stones. Young children have sensitive nerve endings in their fingers and they will love describing stones that are similar and those that are different.

because something is heavy does not mean it will sink. For example, ships are very heavy but not very dense, so they float. • Playing games, such as skimming pebbles into the sea, helps children learn concepts of weight, distance, time and speed. Which stones are the best skimmers? The flat ones, the heavy ones or the light ones? Perhaps the children can make two piles, best and worst skimmers.  Let the children show good imagination with the stones, using them to make towers, patterns, and small world imaginative games. Painting and drawing on the stones promotes creativity. Take time, enjoy. and know your child is a little scientist!  Margaret Travers M.A. is an Early Years teacher trainer who lives in Hythe.

by Paul Apps UA

The adventure continues art update: a Cornish summer Hi everyone, i hope that you all enjoyed the summer that we had, and managed to get out there with your sketch books and paints. i have been stuck in the gallery for much of it and sadly have not had the chances that i might have liked to get out in the warm sun and paint.

That said I have not been idle, with commissions to complete and my own painting schedule to stay on top of. I thought in this article that I would talk to you about some of the paintings that I have been creating this summer. Ever since my son Barnaby started university way down in Falmouth a couple of years ago, my duties as a father were called into action. I found myself as removal man and assisting with his relocation there. That was my first ever trip to Cornwall, I was instantly in love with the county and the landscape I saw. It held a thousand potential panting opportunities around every

cliff tops, deep azure seas, and hidden coves west of Falmouth. Oh, and not forgetting all those lovely little safe harbours and hillside hamlets such as Porthleven and Mousehole. I also painted the famous Crown mines at Botallack, deep into Poldark country. I was approached one evening here as I painted and photographed in the act; these images later found their way into the National Trust’s magazine for 2017.  In 2017 I found a very different Cornwall, one that was altogether more tranquil and peaceful: full of sailing, beautiful blue seas and calm. The

James earlier in the summer that work was selling and requesting more very soon. Of course I was overjoyed at the news and set to making new paintings. As well as painting my images of the Romney Marshes, sunsets across the Marshes and boats from Folkestone Harbour, I managed several of Cornwall, and the Falmouth working boat. One study of Portscatho Harbour was sent down and never made it onto the gallery wall. It was snapped up by a couple from London who saw it on my social media feeds.  My palette has once again changed - not just for these new works, but generally. I found

“My plein air work covering the Romney Marshes over these past years stood me in good stead. Studying clouds and light in each work, one hones the skills needed to paint outside.” corner. The light and colour there is so very different to that found here in Kent. To start with the atmosphere seems so fresh and clean, unpolluted, unspoilt. It gave the light an intensity that, as an artist, I have never seen before. Even painting in the south of France or indeed in Venice has not rivalled the light found in Cornwall.  My plein air work covering the Romney Marshes over these past years stood me in good stead. Studying clouds and light in each work, one hones the skills needed to paint outside. So, whilst relocating so far afield, these refined skills come into their own. I first painted the craggy

16 |  www.hythelife.org.uk

Roseland Peninsula east of Falmouth offered me a very different plein air  experience. I painted twenty-two plein air works in the week I was there, with a thousand more I wish I’d had the time to make. I even sold one painting to a couple at their wedding reception in the hotel above me. They had been watching my progress as I painted in St Mawes Harbour and they wanted the painting to remember their wonderful wedding day.  I also met James Wood, owner of the Waterside Gallery. He instantly became a fan of my work and started representing me in St Mawes and East Cornwall. So back to the plot. I’d had a frantic call from

myself putting so many colours out each time that I could have signed the palette and sold that. It was in need of a severe edit. So now I use just two blues, reds and yellows, one green, umber and blue black, with two whites. It allows for more considered mixes, simpler choices and an overall harmony throughout each painting. It’s is also less expensive to keep stock, which is always a good consideration. Next time around I will discuss planning plein air painting in the winter months for those of you who feel brave, as this time of year can offer so many opportunities to the plein air painter. So until then, happy painting.

InStep Dance Company Rounds off Another Successful Year

“this is the greatest show”. so trilled the chorus line to the Greatest showman as instep’s elite Company one provided a spectacular finale to one of the dance organisation’s several end-of-year showpieces. it was a great show indeed, providing a celebration of skills and styles that took the audience on a fast-paced tour of dance, music and staging forms. This was an evening that fizzed with energy, athleticism, passion and pride. The packed auditorium at Brockhill Park Performing Arts College (BPPAC) was first treated to a routine by Company One, who created a contemporary dance punctuated by balletic grace. The atmospheric piece, entitled, ‘Find somebody’ turned the traditional male/female dance relationship on its head, cleverly echoing the wide variety of relationship patterns in modern society.  They were followed on stage by a series of tableaux by the younger members of InStep, some as young as four. They all rose to the challenge of the choreography they had been

something for everyone. The finale, the senior dancers’ take on the 2017 Hugh Jackman film, The Greatest Showman, was – in every sense – a show-stopper and brought the house down along with the curtain. The sense of pride each dancer took in their performance and that of their peers was almost tangible. InStep clearly fosters a great ethos in its members and in turn, the affection the students feel for InStep is deep-seated and widespread. As Luis Green, a 10-year old who has already been dancing with InStep for nine years, puts it ‘the people here are like a little family’. Elise Layton, 17, a senior student who is hoping to go onto study dance at university,

The whole show was a joyful carnival of dance, allowing all of InStep’s students to showcase their talents to best effect. given and, most importantly, seemed to be loving their big moment on stage.  In the second half of the show, the audience was treated to a mix-up of dance genres, including InStep’s new ‘Breakin’ Crew’, who exhibited impressive strength, endurance and creativity as they explored the fundamental elements of break dancing. ‘Break’ certainly seemed to be the operative word given the amazing contortions the dancers twisted their bodies into! The whole show was a joyful carnival of dance, allowing all of InStep’s students to showcase their talents to best effect. From street style to break moves, rhythmic gymnastics (the hoola-hooping was a real highlight!) to tumbling, contemporary dynamism to balletic grace, InStep provided

18 |  www.hythelife.org.uk

adds, ‘I just don’t want to leave’. Indeed, several former InSteppers have returned to coaching positions whilst numerous others have gone onto enjoy professional careers within the dance world. Perhaps the most notable of these is AJ Bentley, the former Brockhill pupil and InStep student who is now touring in the Take That musical, The Band (for more on AJ, see the feature on him elsewhere in this edition of Hythe Life!).  InStep was founded some thirty years ago by one-woman dynamo, Jackie Mortimer, a former BPPAC teacher, who describes herself as ‘retired’ – but if ‘retirement’ involves being the artistic director of a 200-strong dance school with 24 teaching staff and more dance classes than you can count on two hands, then heaven knows what she counts as ‘work’!

Jackie founded InStep as an after-school club for around ten of her pupils who wanted an opportunity to dance outside the curriculum. Since then, the company has grown and grown, thanks in no small part to its inclusive and familyorientated philosophy. It offers both a whole host of open-access classes on Thursday nights at BBPAC which cater for tiny tots right up to late teens, as well as putting together a range of elite companies – accessed via an audition process – for more able dancers, who train on Wednesdays. InStep is a not-for-profit organisation and relies upon the support it receives from its volunteers, sponsors and supporters, alongside its own fundraising efforts, to keep its programmes running. Its partnership with BPPAC has been particularly important to InStep’s success; the college provides both studio and performance space as well as admin support, and Jackie is quick to credit the role BPPAC plays in InStep’s continued success. And as the curtain comes down on the 2017/18 year at the dance company, it is not only time to start back on a fruitful year’s work but also forward to a new intake of dancers. For those interested in sponsorship or dance class opportunities, more information can be found at www.instepdance.co.uk. Auditions for company places will take place on September 26th and October 3rd, and classes resume on October 3rd/4th.

AJ Bentley: Hythe’s Own Star in the Making

there’s no doubt that AJ Bentley’s star is shining brightly these days. Just two years ago, the 23-year old from Hythe was about to embark upon his dissertation at university in london, a prospect that he admits he was dreading. fast forward twenty-four months and he is touring in a hugely successful musical, gets regular texts from Gary Barlow and is about to make his west end stage debut. oh, and he also has his own eP in the pipeline to boot. suffice it to say, that dissertation never did get written… AJ is a familiar face to those of us who watched BBC One’s Saturday night talent show, Let It Shine, in early 2017. Created by Take That’s Gary Barlow, the show sought to discover five fresh-faced and super-talented young men to form ‘the band’ in a new musical of the same name, based around Take That’s greatest hits. Let it Shine AJ has his mother to thank for his rise to fame, as it was she who sent him a link to the Let It Shine application form. But you can’t help but feel that AJ’s big break was written in the stars anyway. As AJ explains, “I can actually remember a few years ago – before Let It Shine – walking down the main road in Hythe and saying to my mum, ‘how can I get to Gary Barlow?’ I’d just always wanted him to be my mentor.” Barlow had always been one of AJ’s biggest idols, and he describes the decision to enter Let It Shine as a ‘no-brainer’. Fate had already lent a hand when AJ’s boyband auditioned for the X Factor prior to

20 |  www.hythelife.org.uk

Let It Shine. Although the group made it through several stages of the audition process, they were unsuccessful in landing a place in the televised rounds. This proved to be serendipitous for AJ: Simon Cowell’s door closing merely propelled him towards his longed-for audition in front of Barlow. “I think it was all meant to be”, he smiles.  Although AJ did not win the show of the same name, he certainly has the X-factor: that elusive star quality that thousands of young hopefuls want but far fewer actually have. In his first Let It Shine audition in front of the judges – Barlow, Danni Minogue and US singer Amber Riley – AJ looked as if he was born to perform: the camera loved him and his crowdpleasing delivery of Stevie Wonder’s Signed, Sealed, Delivered was note-perfect. It was a huge gamble for AJ, who had never performed on stage on his own before. But, with the judges boogying on down in their seats, his risk-taking paid off handsomely and he sailed through to the next round. His willingness to make his solo debut in

front of three famous faces, TV cameras and several million viewers might sound extraordinary. But AJ is a completely comfortable on a stage. In fact, having been taken to watch his sister’s dance classes as a tot sitting on his mother’s lap, he started dancing himself with the InStep Dance Company when he was just three.

Hythe Life - ISSUE 18 (Autumn 18)_v04.qxp_____ 10/09/2018 13:22 Page 21

dance teachers watching, ‘was a particularly special moment’.

AJ had been dancing at InStep since he was three AJ is quick to credit InStep’s role within his career trajectory. “I just wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing without InStep. You learn a lot of performance skills as well as different dance styles, and it builds your confidence and your character.” AJ is still a great supporter of InStep: in fact, the day after our interview, he was off to its end-of-year show. Once he’d got through the initial Let It Shine

Touring with The Band Instead, 9 to 5 became ‘The Band’ and he found himself caught up in a whirlwind of publicity and rehearsals leading up to the world premiere of The Band, six months after the Let It Shine final. The tour is physically demanding, with a gruelling schedule of dates across the length and breadth of the country. AJ has been on the road for the past year. Although he admits that the nomadic lifestyle of a touring company has its challenges

“I just wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing without InStep. You learn a lot of performance skills as well as different dance styles, and it builds your confidence and your character.” audition, AJ’s passage through the competition was unobstructed. AJ himself wasn’t convinced that he would make it all the way, though. In a phone call to his mother when he was placed in one of several bands by the judges, he confessed that he did not think the group, called 9 to 5, had a realistic chance of winning. As it was, his band was so popular with the voting public that it never found itself in the elimination zone.  And so to the grand final, where 9 to 5 went head-to-head with two of the other bands manufactured by Barlow and his gang of judges. Suddenly, reality hit home to AJ, who was midway through his final year at university whilst competing in Let It Shine. “At the moment that Graham Norton said, ‘And the winner of Let It Shine is…’, I was genuinely thinking – dissertation… or UK tour?”, he remembers. If he hadn’t won, AJ would have gone back to his books on Monday morning to start his thesis.

(“you’re only in the same place for two weeks at a time and living out of a suitcase, away from your family and friends”), he has adapted to it with ease. “When you love the show – and I really do – touring is a lot easier. The audience get me through as well; the adrenaline I get on stage is the buzz that makes you want to go back and do it again the next day.” The tour bus rolled into Canterbury for a two-week residency at the Marlowe Theatre in February: a highlight for AJ, despite the ‘Beast from the East’ howling in and depositing several centimetres of snow on Canterbury whilst The Band was in town. “Growing up wanting to be in the Arts and being from round here, you want to perform at the Marlowe. Being able to do that for two weeks, and to see familiar faces in the audience, was amazing”. His favourite moment in the show is his performance of Never Forget, which evokes a feeling of nostalgia for AJ. “The song has been the epilogue to the end-of-year shows at InStep for years and years and everyone performed it on stage together,” he explains. To be able to sing Never Forget on the Marlowe stage, with all his

“I start the show in a chest of drawers” Like many performers, AJ is not immune from the odd superstition, though. He confesses to an somewhat unorthodox way of starting each performance. “I begin the show in a chest of drawers and there are socks that hang on it. For some reason, I give all the socks a handshake and say, ‘good game’ to them, as if I’m in a football match. There’s even a pair of knickers in there that I do it to! I have a superstition that if I don’t do that before I go on, I’ll have an awful show.” The full houses to which The Band’s cast regularly play suggest that his ritual is working. Currently back in Hythe for the show’s summer break, AJ is enjoying a much-needed rest, having performed in all 301 of the shows so far. However, he admits that his punishing rehearsal and performance schedule has taken its toll on his body, and he is looking forward to catching up with family and friends, enjoying walks on the beach and taking a well-earned holiday or two before returning to tour duties in September.  And the future? Well, that looks pretty stellar for AJ. Midway through the second leg of the tour, he will be treading the boards in the West End: such has been The Band’s success that it has been granted a six-week run in the Theatre Royal in London over Christmas. It’s not hard to see why, what with its catchy Take That songs, fantastic cast and a storyline that is brave, funny, uplifting and moving by turns. For AJ, his unexpected West End debut, which happens to fall on his 24th birthday, is just, “the cherry on top of the cake.” His first solo EP is also in the pipeline which, excitingly, may include input from Barlow, who still messages AJ on a regular basis. The EP is due to be released towards the end of this year. AJ Bentley may thank his lucky stars that he found his way to Gary Barlow and into The Band but his own star quality exudes from his performances, and in person he is open, funny and fizzing with energy and enthusiasm. It’s hard to avoid the conclusion that his name would have ended up in lights whichever route he took.

Feed Your

Guts Charles Bruford - The Osteopathic Clinic

Recent scientific research has shown that the microbes in and on our bodies have a direct influence on the way our brains work. As well as helping the breakdown and digestion of food, gut bacteria produce neuro-transmitting chemicals that have been shown to directly influence cranial nerve X, the Vagus nerve, which is a direct link to the brain from the gut (1). They are also implicated in the function of our immune system as well as influencing how DNA works in nerve cells. The implications of this research suggest that conditions including depression, autism and neurodegenerative disease are now being linked to the bacteria nestling in our systems.(1) One theory, regarding the complexity and success of the human species, is that the many trillions of bacteria actually contribute to the overall genetic and physiologic function of our bodies and our complex behavioural activity. The full set of human genetic instructions equals around 26,000. This is about half of those found in rice (2). I think we can agree that rice has a far less complicated behavioural activity than us. However, when you add in the genome of the bacteria hosted by our bodies this figure increases to around 4 million. Because most of these genes directly influence our cells, the gut microbiome can be viewed as a built-in bioreactor which directs the immune system, modifies genes and regulates metabolism (2). Different diets have been seen to promote different strains of bacteria in our systems. A high protein diet will influence one form of bacteria whereas a vegetarian diet will influence others (2), and of course the use of anti-biotics can have a devastating effect on all (3). One hypothesis suggests that the prescription of anti-biotics to elderly patients for minor infections can have such an effect on the gut-brain communication link to actually cause symptoms of delirium (4). There are also implications where a gut flora imbalance may also be instrumental in the development of food intolerances and sensitivities (5). Irritable bowel syndrome is a very common condition ruining the lives of those who suffer from it. Research in America has shown that the biggest influences on the development of a child’s immune system and avoiding the development of allergies or intolerances later in life are: being born and grow up on a farm (6), have a natural delivery (7), being

breast fed for 6 months (8) and, believe it or not, having a pet dog in the house (9). It’s all to do with exposure to bacteria. With all this in mind it can only be sensible to look after our tiny hitchhikers. We need to feed and replenish our bacterial squatters (no pun intended) and as well as enjoy the digestive benefits maybe find better mental health along the way.

Great foods to feed your microbiome: Live yogurt – buy it in the supermarket or make it at home. Ask your Granny, she’ll know how. Kefir – Fermented milk. In Eastern Europe there is probably 50 different brands of Kefir, but there are now a couple of options to pluck straight off the shelf. Or buy the grains on line and ferment it yourself. sauerkraut – Who’d have thought that this wasn’t just pickled cabbage! It’s fermented, stunningly good for you, easy to make and available to buy readily. (Unpasteurized brands have the live bacteria.)  Kombucha – Fermented tea is taking the world by storm, available in our local shops or make it yourself. Packed with bacteria and anti-oxidants and brewed from everyday tea bags and sugar. You will have never tasted anything quite like it, a mildly fizzy apple cider vinegar is the best description I can give. I brew my own, it’s amazing. Cheese – Cheddar, mozzarella and gouda contain probiotics which survive the ageing process. Polyphenols – We all need to be getting these into our diets, a group of superfoods with claimed benefits to combat Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, obesity and inflammation. Cloves, Star Anise, turmeric and cocoa powder are all high in polyphenols. There are obviously many foods that can be added to this list, and anyone with a medical condition should talk with their doctor before making drastic changes to their diet. But with a few tweaks we could all be happier, healthier and more energetic. Who said that osteopaths are only interested in backs?!

What is

Gum Disease? Gum disease is a general term describing the inflammation and destruction of the tissues supporting the teeth. the early stage of gum disease (gingivitis) is caused by the build-up of plaque on the gums. Plaque is a soft, sticky material that collects on the surface of your teeth and gums and is full of bacteria and their waste products. Plaque contains many toxins and, if not brushed away, will start to attack the bone surrounding the teeth, a condition called Periodontitis. once the bone is destroyed it is unable to grow back and this leads to loose teeth and tooth loss. How will I know if I have gum disease? Your gums will appear red in colour rather than the usual healthy pink. They will also be slightly puffy or swollen and you could experience bad breath or they may recede. Inflamed gums will also bleed, usually when brushing or when biting into something hard.

Who is more susceptible? Gums generally recede with age, hence the term ‘long in the tooth’. However, some people are more susceptible; various risk factors that have been highlighted include poor oral hygiene, tobacco use, diabetes, genetics, poor nutrition and stress.

How to avoid gum disease • Brushing your teeth and gums twice a day for two minutes. • Clean in between your teeth with interdental brushes to remove the bacteria that the toothbrush cannot reach.  • It is important to attend regular dental examinations so that problems with your gums can be detected and treated early.  • Visit your Hygienist because they are trained to educate, motivate and demonstrate how you can improve your oral health. They are also skilled at removing plaque and tartar deposits around the teeth and in areas where you cannot access easily.

Hythe History:

Etta Lemon,

the ‘Mother of the Birds’ 100 years ago this year, women first won the right to vote. the story of emmeline Pankhurst and her fellow suffragettes, in their feather-plumed hats, is well-documented. But it’s a little-known fact that, at the same time, another group of equally strong women were on a crusade of their own: to stop the massacre of birds for the millinery trade. the efforts of these forgotten, yet formidable, women culminated in the establishment of the rsPB, now the largest conservation charity in the uK – and one of them, etta lemon, was born in Hythe. It is fair to say that Etta Lemon was no fan of Mrs Pankhurst and the suffragette movement. In fact, she led the East Surrey branch of the Anti-Suffrage League. But perhaps more important to her on a personal level was her extreme opposition to the suffragettes’ fancy for ostentatious millinery. Etta saw Mrs Pankhurst and her fellow suffragettes as fashion victims, complicit – through their patronage of the ‘murderous milliners’ – in the massacre of wild birds for whose protection she campaigned passionately, vociferously and, at times, militantly.  Hats adorned with feathers, wings and even whole birds were de rigeur for the well-dressed woman of the Victorian and Edwardian ages: indeed, some feathers were even worth twice their weight in gold. Few birds escaped the milliners’ glare: from exotic hummingbirds and parrots to the garden woodpecker and starling, sea birds to wild fowl, avian adornment was the height of fashion. Etta’s opposition to such cruelty against birds ran deep. Born Margaretta Louise Smith in 1860, the young Etta Smith lived in Hythe where her father, Captain William Smith, was commandment of the School of Musketry (now Sainsbury’s), until the age of seven. Her early childhood was spent on the banks of the Royal Military Canal and the shores of the Kent coast, fostering her great love of nature. She was haunted by memories of the pained cries of seabirds, including gulls and terns, silenced by the guns of the soldiers her father commanded.

44 |  www.hythelife.org.uk

These formative experiences had a powerful effect on the young Etta, who would make it her life’s work to protect birds from the follies of human greed and vanity.  In 1889, she founded Fur, Feather and Fin Folk, along with Eliza Phillips. This merged in 1891 with the Society for the Protection of Birds, formed by another committed female conservationist, Emily Williamson. The new society’s charter was written by barrister Frank Lemon, who Etta went onto marry in 1892. In 1904, the Society for the Protection of Birds was incorporated by Royal Charter to become the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds – or the RSPB, as we know it today.  Protecting birds was as alien to the majority of her contemporaries as female emancipation, however. This did not stop Etta and her fellow campaigners. They berated and lectured women they saw wearing such barbaric millinery. They targeted department stores with a penchant for avian adornment. They coordinated demonstrations. They lobbied parliament. Indeed, the redoubtable Mrs Lemon was known in some quarters as ‘the Dragon’ and it is said that a director of the Natural History Museum once hid under a stairwell rather than face the mighty lady herself.  That one of the largest environmental charities in the UK is the product of the passionate activism of a group of ‘ordinary’ Edwardian women is nothing short of extraordinary. It is interesting, therefore,

that Etta Lemon, Emily Williamson and Eliza Phillips have, until recently, been notable by their absence from the RSPB’s history: a case of history still being ‘his-story’ rather than ‘her-story’, perhaps.  Yet Etta Lemon’s role cannot be understated. She succeeded in lobbying parliament to pass the Importation of Plumage (Prohibition) Act – a piece of legislation that saved some avian species from the brink of extinction; she brought ornithological conservation into the public eye and created a farreaching transformation to the status quo. This has led Tessa Boase, whose recent book, Mrs Pankhurst’s Purple Feather, recounts Etta Lemon’s life, to label her an ‘ornithological suffragette’.  For those wishing to see the fruits of her labour at first-hand, the RSPB has a nature reserve at Dungerness, where a wealth of resident and migrant birds roost unhindered and undisturbed: thanks, in no small part, to the mighty Etta Lemon. Mrs Pankhurst’s Purple Feather: Fashion, Fury and Feminism – Women's Fight for Change is published by Tessa Boase is published by Aurum Books.

Cook until the apples soften and become stained with the blackberry juice.

• Remove from the heat and put in a shallow ovenproof dish, about 25 x 20cm. It does not matter if they are not fully cooked as they will cook further under the crumble.

Here at Hythe Vet Centre we want to deliver the very best in professional veterinary care whilst maintaining a loving, caring and family ethos. After a long search for the right place for our passion, we believe that we have found it, here in Hythe. THESE INCLUDE: • Dedicated parking. • Purpose built surgical theatre, imaging suite and kennels. • Spacious waiting area and large consulting rooms. • X-ray machine with digital processor allowing faster developing times. • An ultrasound scanner similar to those used in human hospitals. • Heated theatre table – to keep your loved ones cosy warm! • Air driven dental machine, not unlike what you would find at your own dentist! • The latest veterinary practice computer system – this will increase the efficiency of the mundane administration side of things. • An oxygen concentrator – this will provide the oxygen that we will use during anaesthetics. Its biggest bonus is that it means that we will not need regular oxygen bottle deliveries, reducing our environmental impact.

We have been awarded Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons General Practice recognition. HL Sports welcome to the Autumn edition of Hythe life sports. in this issue we have a look at how Hythe town fC have started their 2018/19 campaign. we also round up how our cricket clubs are doing as the season draws to a close.

FOOTBALL

Mixed start for the Cannons After last season’s heartbreak when it was a case of ‘so near but yet so far’ - there is a buzz around the Cannons this season. With some excellent acquisitions and more importantly key player retentions, Hythe are one of the favourites for promotion this year and should at least make the play-offs. Football, however, is a funny old game and there will no doubt be many twists and turns in what should be an exciting season ahead.  At the time of writing the Cannons have only played their first two games of the season, a disappointing loss to Ashford United and a thrilling win over East Grinstead which saw a first half hat-trick from target man Zak Ansah. `

As stated above there have been the usual comings and goings at the club during the transfer window period and the team picture above is somewhat different to the one taken at the end of last season. Jerson Dos Santos, Will Godmon, Callum Emptage and club captain Ryan Johnson all moved on to pastures new. Manager Sam Denly, however, did some excellent business preseason not only retaining key players such as the prolific Zak Ansah but also adding some real quality to the squad. New recruits include goalkeeper George Kamurasi, defenders Nathan Day, Ben Gorham and Aziz Lyoubi, midfielder Jack Sammoutis and strikers Nigel Neita and Junior Aikhionbare. Chris Kinnear is the club’s new skipper with Ryan Palmer his number two. There has also been big news off the pitch with the Cannons finding a new sponsor in the shape of digital currency company LIFElabs.io. The deal will allow both investment in players and infrastructure and is a sign that the Cannons are very much looking to the future. Things are very much looking up for the Cannons and we hope to be reporting on a storming start to the 2018/19 season in our next issue.

HL Sports CRICKET

Hythe CC Club captain Chris Slee provide us with an update on Hythe CC’s fortunes this year:

Saltwood CC 2018 has been another fantastic year for Saltwood CC, especially after being promoted in the Kent Regional League and Kent Village League at the end of 2017. After a few losses in early August, the club turned things around to go 33 points clear in Kent Regional League Championship East and 11 points clear in the Kent Village League Division Two. Barring any calamitous results or penalty points in the last two rounds, we should win both leagues. Check www.saltwoodcc.com to see how our season finished up! Junior cricket is a massive part of the club, offering cricket coaching for boys and girls of all abilities. All sessions are led by the club’s ECBqualified coaches and overseas players. As always, the kids and coaches had a great time, especially when throwing over 1000 water balloons at the last session. Junior cricket will be back and better than ever in 2019 so please visit www.saltwoodcc.com/colts for more information. Thanks to Hythe Bay Financial for their support this year, the juniors looked great in their new club shirts.  Alongside the impressive on-field performances, the club’s facilities have been improving as well thanks to grants from Kent Cricket Club, Roger De Haan Charitable Trust, Kent Police and the vital support from our sponsors, Hythe Life Magazine, Hythe Bay Financial, Hall Electrical, Serious Cricket and Hide Physiotherapy. Their generosity has helped us to buy new wicket covers and sight screens, making Saltwood CC one of the best grounds in the area. Lastly, a thank you to our other sponsors who help us with projects that we wouldn’t be able to start without them: Kent Ballooning for donating flight vouchers and the White Hart pub for sponsoring the Tea of the Year, which has lifted the standard of cricket teas to a new level. If you would like to play for a club that has a winning mentality while still playing for fun, has fantastic playing facilities, excellent wickets, and exquisite cricket teas then please get in touch with the Chairman – ian@saltwoodcc.com.

“The club, as indicated by the League, had to run two Saturday teams to retain their Kent League Status. To this end, the cricket square has been re-laid at a cost of £20,000 and the Vindohon Restaurant has provided sponsorship towards transport costs. The club is very grateful for their continued support. The 1st team, having won four of their last five matches including an extremely tense game against Walmer at the Grove, look as though they may avoid relegation this season. Chasing a target of 111 Walmer required just twelve runs for victory with 8 wickets in hand, but overseas player Jarryd Taig and veteran Henry Large ripped through their batting line up and bowled the visitors out just 4 runs short in an unbelievable finish. The 1st XI league remains very tight with just 15 points separating third place from bottom and Hythe sitting in mid table. There has been a core of 7 players who have held the team together, showing a great deal of resilience and overcoming a poor start to the season. The 2nd team has unfortunately been relegated, mainly due to early season shortage of players in the club. However, numbers have increased and there is now a young side which can only get better in future years. A special mention must be made of Ben Davies, an outstanding overseas cricketer and character.

Keeping both teams in the Kent League must be regarded as success. The Sunday team has only lost one game but unfortunately eight fixtures have been cancelled by the opposition not being able to field a team. Hopefully, next year some common sense will prevail, and as proposed, cricket in Kent will be organised on a regional basis. Hythe are always looking to recruit players of all ages and abilities; if you are interested in playing, have recently moved to the area or looking to get back into the sport please do not hesitate to get in touch at info@hythecsc.com. As the 2018 season draws to a close, Hythe CC looks forward to the next which will be 166th year of cricket at The Grove.”

Hythe Community Sponsorship:

Resettling a Syrian family it was the summer of 2015 when the photograph of Alan Kurdi, the syrian toddler who tragically drowned in the mediterranean, featured in the media and sent shockwaves throughout the world. Hythe, like many places in the uK, heightened its sensitivity to the unfolding refugee crisis, and its residents, in characteristically compassionate fashion, began to wonder what they could to help. Local charities, churches and individuals began to work together. Throughout the initial response there was also a sense of, ‘We need to do something more, something lasting’. It was through this sense that the idea to participate in the Government’s new Community Sponsorship Scheme began to grow and now, in 2018, Hythe is preparing to welcome a Syrian family under that scheme.  “We held a series of community meetings to begin to explore what we, as a community, could do to respond to the refugee crisis” says Callum

work directly with the Home Office to offer a comprehensive resettlement package of housing, befriending, language classes and orientation to life in the UK with the aim of welcoming the family to the area in the first of next year. Local Kent County Council Member, Martin Whybrow, who is part of the steering group, adds, “The Community Sponsorship Scheme has shown itself to be a tried and tested national initiative and a great way to bring the whole community together. From the beginning, it has been clear that there has been lots of

“‘What was clear, from the start, was that there were local organisations who were already delivering top-class support to refugees and we wanted to encourage people to support these groups.” McKenna, of The Salvation Army, who chairs the local Community Sponsorship Group. “What was clear, from the start, was that there were local organisations who were already delivering topclass support to refugees and we wanted to encourage people to support these groups. What was also clear was that there was huge public support from local residents, many of them skilled, who wanted to welcome a family to the local area and to support them to integrate, settle, and to rebuild a new life for themselves in the UK following the horrendous trauma they had suffered.” Since then, a steering group comprised of local organisations and individuals, including the Kent Refugee Action Network (KRAN), has formed. It has been working hard to put the plans in place to register as an official Community Sponsorship Group, which would

enthusiasm locally about the project and it has gained the support of the local authority.” As the plans for resettlement have started to unfold, various groups have begun to meet to bring together the required housing needs. These include decorating and furnishing a house which a local resident has kindly made available for this purpose, putting together a comprehensive support package of language and orientation and raising the necessary funds to make the project work. “The Home Office require that groups raise £9000 to help the family resettle and to demonstrate a seriousness from the local group to the scheme” explains Martin. “Locally, there has been great support of the project and there are a variety of fundraising events planned for the autumn. Alternatively, people can contribute online through our Just Giving page.”

By Lt. Callum McKenna Hythe Salvation Army Church & Community Centre

Callum concludes: “We are not underestimating the amount of work involved in the government’s sponsorship scheme but are hugely encouraged by the goodwill of so many local people as well as the advice of others who have already done this. It is a big responsibility but also very rewarding, to provide a safe, welcoming environment for a vulnerable refugee family who have endured much trauma through a scheme which provides a screened, safe and legal way for those in genuine need of help to rebuild their lives in the UK. We’ve been so fortunate with the numbers of people who have come forward to help - financially but also with offers of teaching, translation, decorating, furniture. The list is endless! We’d love to hear from other Hythe residents who’d like to be involved, and we could particularly do with support from any local Arabic speakers. The photograph of Alan Kurdi, which was one of the catalysts for this whole thing, was truly tragic but hopefully, thanks to communities such as Hythe, we can prevent it from happening again.” If you would like to find out more or are interested in helping, please contact the secretary of the Steering Group, Hilary Nabarro, on hnabarro@yahoo.com or contact Callum  McKenna, the group’s chair on 01303 268 792 or callum.mckenna@salvationarmy.org.uk.
