Hythe Watch News from Hy tHe towN CouNCil

Message from  the Town Mayor I am deeply honoured to have been elected to represent Hythe as its new Mayor. I was born in Hythe, at the Hythe Nursing Home on North Road, and I have seen many changes over the years. Some of those changes have been for the better - I remember how the air used to reek of acrid coal smoke as I ran up "Bremner's Hill" on Councillor Douglas Wade cold evenings. Now we have cleaner air and cleaner water in the English Channel off Fisherman's Beach where I used to swim as a child. However, I also recall how I used to scatter breadcrumbs for the birds on the lawn and dozens of starlings, thrushes, blackbirds & sparrows would appear; now, when I scatter breadcrumbs on the same lawn 50 years later only a single seagull swoops down, or possibly a rook or a magpie. The owls, bats and moths that used to make the evenings spooky in Hythe are also mostly long since gone. So I want to join with all of you in Hythe to turn things around. To coin a phrase, let's make Hythe green again. It's not too late. I am sure that councillors will want to work together to conserve our environment and help make Hythe a place where wildlife is protected - on Princes Parade, all along our wonderful Canal, at Oaklands, Eaton Lands, and everywhere in Hythe. I look forward to Armed Forces Day, the Venetian Fete, and the profoundly important Remembrance Sunday where I will uphold Hythe's proud tradition of respect, gratitude, and celebration of Life. Hythe people gave their lives to defeat Fascism in WW2 - now we are faced with the threat of Climate & Ecological breakdown. I am sure Hythe people will show the same wonderful spirit and determination as our grandparents did back then - and, again, Hythe will emerge thriving, peaceful, friendly, compassionate & welcoming.

Councillor’s Corner  Councillor Martin Whybrow Thank you to the people of Hythe for voting in the May elections. It is all change, with a new batch of councillors looking forward to serving the town. We will, of course, respect the heritage of the council whilst making sure it moves forward. There are plenty of issues to get stuck into: improving the local environment, responding to the Otterpool development plans, communicating better, and looking at what facilities are needed for all residents, young and old, to make our town as resilient, inclusive and as welcoming as possible. Thank you to the outgoing mayor and mayoress for all of their hard work and energy over the last two years, as well as to those other councillors who have departed, often after many years of service. With enthusiasm, new ideas and lots of energy, we’ll now look to build on all of the things that already make Hythe such a great town.

Hythe Dementia Awareness’ excellent Reviving Memories day at Oaklands

Citizen of the Year Awards Aimee’s work with The Salvation Army and the Red Box Project (on top of working full-time!) has demonstrated creativity, innovation, passion and hard work. A trip to Kenya inspired her to roll out the Red Box Project – which involves collecting donations of sanitary products and then placing them in schools for teenagers to access freely.  Aimee has worked incredibly hard to get this off the ground, including giving numerous presentations, liaising with schools to encourage them to take a box, and creating a network of donation points around the area. Aimee has demonstrated exceptional commitment and drive to make this happen and has overcome personal barriers to pull off an incredible asset to the local community. Well done Aimee!

Hythe History:

The Town Hall Clock Hythe town Hall was built in 1794 but its clock, its most recognisable feature, did not arrive until seventy-five years later. At a meeting of Hythe Town Council on 9 August 1871, a letter from Henry Scott, a valuer who actually lived in the parish of Newington, was read out:

In May 1872, Henry Scott wrote to the Council again about the difficulties of lighting the clock at night. The gas jets blackened the glass faces.  However, an ingenious solution

primary consideration.  The picture shows a more elaborate metalwork surround than we see today and seems also to show a lamp suspended below the clock, which by then was lit by electricity.

“The clock was ornately decorated with the motto ‘Ville et Portus de Hethe’ (the Town and Port of Hythe) below a triangular arrangement of three roundels which are almost, but not quite, heraldic. ” A Clock with a Face to the East and to the West (transparent) placed in Front of the Town Hall, would I believe be a great ornament and much appreciated by the Inhabitants. A few Gentlemen have liberally responded to the suggestion. I have confidence in being able to obtain the necessary Funds.  I address you for the purpose of obtaining:-  First, your permission to carry out the design Secondly, your engagement to light it with Gas nightly. The proposed plan and matters of detail I shall have much pleasure in submitting for your approval, at your convenience.  Since this request did not require the Council to stump up any money, except the cost of the gas lighting, it agreed.  The clock was duly commissioned and installed in front of the Town Hall the next year.  There were, however, some unforeseen teething problems.

had been devised and the jets were placed further away, but with reflectors attached to the adjacent windows.  The clock was ornately decorated with the motto ‘Ville et Portus de Hethe’ (the Town and Port of Hythe) below a triangular arrangement of three roundels which are almost, but not quite, heraldic. The top one is the Coat of Arms of Hythe, except that the ships are the wrong colour, and is a representation of the arms granted by Edward I to the town. At lower left is part of the Common Seal of Hythe and at lower right what appears to be a rather cross seagull of the sort that would steal your chips on the seafront! It is, in fact, an eagle and represents the seal of the Mayor of Hythe.  The same device, better executed, can be seen on the Mayor’s pew at St Leonard’s Church. In nearly a hundred and fifty years the clock has needed cleaning and repairing many times. This photo (from the Folkestone Herald) shows the process in February 1914, when clearly the Health and Safety of the workers was not the

In 2014 it was overhauled and virtually rebuilt by specialist Smiths of Derby. This very expensive work was funded by an exceptionally by Kellen Blackwell generous gift by the President of Hythe Civic Society, Doug Amans. The Society has, since 1997, used the late Rufus Segar’s drawing of the clock as the masthead for its Newsletter. Hythe people:

Brockhill Park Young Farmers it’s all systems go when i arrive (in totally the wrong shoes!) at Brockhill Park’s school farm on a spring afternoon in march. there are young farmers hefting hay into feeding troughs with their pitchforks, others steering wheelbarrows busily around the site and yet more tending to newborn lambs, one of whom was born that morning. Everyone is getting on with their work enthusiastically and good-humouredly; unusually for a school club, there’s no need for chivvying, chasing or chastising by the adults present. Instead, there’s an almost palpable sense of pride and ownership amongst the kids:

started his shift at 7.30am, assisting a ewe with a difficult birth (one of 24 lambs to be born this year at the farm), and will finally clock off at 5pm. “Students come in the morning and afternoon to handfeed the lambs. I’m down at 7.30am to open the place up and will be here

“The farm includes cattle, pigs, sheep and chickens, as well as small animals, renting grazing land from Brockhill Country Park for the larger animals: it’s a working farm, not a petting zoo, which gives students the chance to see the whole life cycle, from mating to meat production”. it’s their farm, their work and their responsibility. With some 80 members, Brockhill’s Young Farmers’ Club is the largest in Kent and clearly thriving. “If the students weren’t here doing this, there aren’t staff here to do it for us”, explains Donna Ashlee, Assistant Principal of BPPAA, Farm Manager and a farmer’s daughter and wife herself. “I think it gives them more ownership of the facility. Dedication, resilience and engagements are buzzwords at the moment in education but you can see it here in practice.” It seems to me this is enrichment of the best kind, combining the great outdoors with multidisciplinary learning, entrepreneurship and, yes, a huge dollop of farmyard fun.  Make no mistake about it, though; these kids work hard. Farming is labour- and timeintensive graft. My guide for the afternoon, 18-year old Club Chairman Max Andrews,

until 4.30-5pm doing odd jobs. I’m based down here anyway because I do Animal Management as an A Level but I’m also chairman of the

committee and get involved in all the farm stuff”, he tells me.  Initially attracted to Brockhill because of its performing arts’ facilities - and with a career in stage management in mind - Max’s life plan turned on its head when he encountered the school farm and fell in love with farming. Now he is committed to a career in the agricultural industry.  The farm includes cattle, pigs, sheep and chickens, as well as small animals, renting grazing land from Brockhill Country Park for the larger animals: it’s a working farm, not a petting zoo, which gives students the chance to see the whole life cycle, from mating to meat production. The farm operates to an

exceptionally high welfare standard, and Max refers to the animals as ‘being like pets’ to many of the students.  Although another of the students admits that “letting go is the hardest part”, all the Young Farmers are keenly aware of the realities of life on a working farm. “The ‘farm to fork’ ethos is something we really try to promote, in the curriculum as well as in the Club; they have to understand that our animals are for meat, they’re not pets,” says Max. How do they feel about the animals they have looked after going to slaughter? India, another of the Young Farmers, admits that “letting go is the hardest part”, many of the members like to visit the school’s farm shop to see ‘their’ animal’s meat when it returns from the butcher. The farm shop also functions as a real business, with Young Farmers’ members working behind the till and charged with taking orders around the school. All the meat is the farm’s own and includes beef, pork and lamb. The Brilliant British Brockhill Bangers are a particular favourite with customers; what’s not to love about a proper sausage made with highquality pork from a happy, local pig? As well as husbandry and welfare, learning showing techniques is also central to the weekly Young Farmers’ meetings. The club competes in the annual Kent County Show, taking more students than any other Young Farmers’ organisation as well as a large array of sheep, cows and pigs to be exhibited. Indeed, in 2015, Brockhill caught the attention of the popular BBC programme Countryfile and the farmers got their 15-minutes of fame when presenter Matt Baker followed their progress through the show. Last year, 37 members attended the show, having been given special permission to miss school to camp out at the showground for three nights and show their animals. Although a pig specialist himself, Max shows me some of this year’s calves, who will be exhibited at the Kent County Show in July. With his farmer’s keen eye, he tells me that they are “really well produced” and the club is hoping for a clutch of good prizes for them. But what does

showing livestock actually entail? Max fills me in. “The students get to show their animal; they’ll be in a suit and tie in their butcher’s jacket, with up to 500 people watching. They’ve cleaned it, they’ve looked after it all year. It’s sort of become their own, but they understand that we have to send it off for food production as well”. One of the students describes it as ‘a lot of blood, sweat and tears’, but it’s evidently hugely rewarding and exciting as well, with or without Matt Baker sprinkling stardust on their endeavours. Whilst other schools may have community gardens, petting animals or small numbers of livestock, Donna Ashlee believes that Brockhill is the only school in the country with an ethos so focused on outdoor learning. Indeed, the great outdoors is central to Brockhill’s teaching curriculum – quite literally, in fact. All years 7 and 8 have one ‘Great Outdoors’ (GO) lesson per week, which teaches them about crop production, farm animals and livestock meat production.  Year 9 students can then opt to

take a Level 2 Diploma in Animal Care, which includes husbandry skills and the ‘five freedoms’ of animal welfare, progressing an A Level in Animal Management if they choose to continue into sixth form.  It’s not just for aspiring farmers, though; previous students have gone onto careers in veterinary medicine, zoology, equine management and grooming. Although the  agri-industry might stereotypically be seen as a male bastion full of burly Old MacDonalds, there’s certainly no gender divide at Brockhill; in fact, Max’s girlfriend, an alumnus of the club, has just gone into sheep farming.  The school is rightly proud of its farm but it’s the students who really make it special. As Max sums up as he bids me goodbye, “We’ve won national awards, we’ve been on Countryfile, and it’s all down to the students. Everything from going to events to coming down early in the mornings, they really do love it.” Mailing list: farm@brockhill.kent.sch.uk

On 9th June, Brockhill will be participating in Open Farm Sunday, the farming industry’s annual open day. Members of the public can visit the farm for free between 1-4pm to meet some of the animals and young farmers as well as buying from the school’s farm shop.

Vets aren’t just for pets

Hythe and the surroundings are blessed with an extraordinarily rich and diverse range of habitats. the dense urban development of the High street and adjacent houses give way to secluded courtyards before expanding to suburban areas with larger gardens. The most significant habitat is the canal, which runs the breadth of the town from Rye across Romney Marsh ending at Sandgate. The canal forms a vital link for wildlife as a corridor or even, in wildlife terms a motorway, bringing access from the agricultural landscape of the Marsh into the town and on to the sea.  Hythe is also geographically well placed at the eastern end of Romney Marsh, adjacent to the sea and also at the foot of the greensand ridge in front of the North Downs. The prevailing south westerly winds bring mild warm moist air up the channel, and yet we are protected from the worst of the cold ‘Beast from the East’ winds that come in off the North Sea and from Scandinavia. This gives Hythe a very mild microclimate compared with other localities. So what does this all mean for us? It means that the opportunity to see and experience wildlife is much better than in many other places. There are plenty of places for animals to live, feed and breed. The walks along the canal and through the bordering woodland are a perfect opportunity to see the best that Hythe has to offer, with swans, ducks and the occasional brilliant blue flash of a kingfisher. Up above is the Roughs, an area of permanent pasture and grazing on the exposed hillside, an ideal area for raptors such as kestrels, owls and the occasional buzzard to hunt for small mammals amongst the grass.

18 |  www.hythelife.org.uk

Occasionally snakes, including adders, can be seen sunning themselves on the slopes. Across the town from the Roughs is Hythe Bay with its shingle beach and extensive foreshore. The large area exposed at low tides is an attraction for the many gulls, waders and other birds that thrive here. If you are lucky you might even spot a visiting dolphin or seal just beyond the surf. The prevalence of wildlife inevitably means that our pets can come into conflict with it. Many a garden songbird or mouse will come to an end at the claws of pet cat. Similarly dogs can disturb ground nesting birds or chase a rabbit. At this time of year it is our

protect ground nesting birds, and all year round near farm animals. If your dog has an unreliable recall or you are walking somewhere new or near farm animals, it is best to keep your dog on a lead.  By law a farmer is entitled to destroy a dog that worries or injures their animals. Of

“The prevalence of wildlife inevitably means that our pets can come into conflict with it. Many a garden songbird or mouse will come to an end at the claws of pet cat. Similarly dogs can disturb ground nesting birds or chase a rabbit.” responsibility as pet owners to limit the disturbance we cause, especially when birds and animals are nesting and breeding. Fledgling birds are frequently ‘rescued’; the RSPB advice is to return them to a safe place as close to their nest as possible, where the parents can find them and look after them.  If you are a dog owner, it’s important to be aware of the Countryside Code. For instance, the access rights that normally apply to open access land require dogs to be kept on a short lead between 1 March and 31 July, to help

course, the Code also asks dog-owners to clean up after their animals and dispose of waste responsibly, as well as having their dogs wormed regularly to protect it, other animals and people.  It is worth mentioning that vets will treat any injured wild animals at no charge and will also have contacts at local sanctuaries who can provide ongoing care and rehabilitation. Antony Hinge MRCVS is a vet who practises in Hythe.

What lies beneath?

The weird and wonderful marine life that inhabits our coastline As the weather warms and the school summer holidays loom, the beaches of Hythe and the adjacent coastline become popular family destinations for play, swimming and relaxation. last year, our enjoyment was affected by an invasion of jellyfish, one of many types of marine life that are usually absent or overlooked on our regular trips to the beach. The sea covers two thirds of our planet and coastal waters are the areas of richest diversity for animal life; some of the colourful, bizarre and fascinating creatures below – the majority being completely harmless – may be present just below the surface of the Hythe seashore.  Just half-a-dozen types of jellyfish are commonly found in British waters. The moon and compass jellyfish were both present in last year’s invasion; the former cannot penetrate human skin and the latter gives an irritation like stinging nettles. More worryingly, the lion’s mane jellyfish, the world’s second longest animal, has orange tentacles with a sting that causes temporary pain and inflammation; multiple stings occur when the tentacles break off and medical attention is recommended.                                                Beaded anemone More likely to be found in rock pools, sea anemones are colourful soft-bodied animals related to the jellyfish that also capture their prey with stinging tentacles, although these cannot affect us. The beaded anemone is familiar along our coastline and can retract its tentacles, appearing as an orange-brown ‘blob’ at low tide.

along British coasts; usually overlooked, they cannot move and attach to rocks, filter feeding by sucking in and forcing out water – collecting minute organisms in the process.

Hermit crab The charismatic hermit crab is often spotted in rock pools towards Sandgate. These 10-legged crustaceans live in the shells of dead molluscs and have a special limb to hook themselves safely inside their ‘homes’.

Sea gooseberry Sea gooseberries are also regular ‘invaders’ of the Hythe coastline, frequently swarming in shallow waters in the summer. Also known as comb jellies, they are a separate animal group to the jellyfish but do not catch prey via stings, releasing a sticky substance instead. They are small (under 150 millimetres) and completely harmless to humans – although you might end up with one in your swimsuit after a swim! Sea Slug Sea slugs are marine molluscs, related to our garden snails and slugs. They can be brilliantly coloured but although many species are found around British coasts, they are rarely seen as they feed amongst seaweed and rocks below the tidal zone.

20 |  www.hythelife.org.uk

Starfish & Sea Urchins The great scavengers of the sea floor are the starfish and sea urchins that often wash up on our beaches following storms at any time of year. Starfish have five or more legs, whilst sea urchins are near-spherical or flattened animals with hard bony plates and spines over the whole body.

Sea squirt Sea squirts are unusual little creatures that are more closely related to humans than all but the fish and seal in this article! They are abundant

Dogfish Our very own shark! The dogfish is a small, (under 1 metre) harmless relative of its fearsome cousins and is widespread in British waters. Unlikely to be seen unless hooked by an angler, look out for its egg cases along our beaches – known as mermaid’s purses.

Common Seal If you are lucky, you may see a common seal popping its head above the surface to breathe while it hunts for fish just offshore. These inquisitive animals have round ‘dog-like’ faces and have been recorded between Hythe and Folkestone.

Gardens of Delight

Have you heard of the National Garden scheme? if not, you’re missing out on some great summer excursions in the great outdoors, delicious homemade treats and an opportunity to help a host of charities to boot… this year, four gardens in the Ct21 postcode are participating, so get your diary out, read on and start planning your visits! Each year, over 3,500 gardens across the UK open their gates to the public for the charity. As Jane Streatfeild, County Organiser, explains, “the National Garden Scheme welcomes you to shed your burden of care and enjoy gardens great and small, manicured or wild, ornamental or productive. Almost without exception you can also indulge in tea with homemade cake… The icing on the cake is that all the money collected on an open day goes to charity.” Since 1927 the National Garden Scheme has been uncovering the nation’s best gardens across England and Wales raising over £53 million for nursing and health charities: last year alone, it made a record annual donation of £3.1m to beneficiaries including Macmillian Cancer Support, Marie Curie Hospice UK, MS Society and Parkinson’s UK.  Four private gardens in Hythe and the surrounding area are following the lead of the scheme’s President and national treasure, Mary Berry, and opening this summer:

1. TopGallant, 5 North Road Hythe, CT21 5UF New to NGS for 2019. TopGallant is a south west facing arden on the hillside with views over the sea. It includes a secluded sculptor’s garden, with mature trees and planting for year-round interest. Wrong plant, Wrong place

Jo Wilson

“They're just weeds, love, they don't belong anywhere.” Her granddaughter stuck out her bottom lip and furrowed her brow. “That doesn't seem very nice. Everything belongs somewhere.” – Kathryn Hughes, the letter You can depend upon many things as a gardener, from inclement weather to persistent pests; a weed is just one of them. They are your inseparable bedfellows, whether you are a keen amateur, a professional or a mere pootler. I’m at the beginning of my career in garden maintenance and design, and one of the many things I am learning is that there’s no escaping them. So, as well as enjoying the many gifts that the earth and plants provide us with, we should also learn to live with the curses. After all, one gardener’s curse is another gardener’s blessing. The owner of a neatly manicured lawn may despair over the persistence of the dandelion, with its early spring, spreading its leaves over the grass. However, apart from the many herbal uses the dandelion has, (and the satisfaction gained from blowing away the

up and when. However, when you’re preparing a long-uncultivated piece of land, like an abandoned allotment, it’s always an idea to dig up small sections of earth and investigate what you find before preparing the ground for planting. You don’t want to start rotovating soil that contains ground elder or horsetail for example; start chopping those up and all you’re doing is propagating. Like the examples above, perennials can be bothersome, and it’s sometimes a case of just accepting the work that goes into controlling them. Perennial weeds are possibly trickier to tackle and control, depending on your experience/point of view. Creeping butterfly, for example, can have deep taproots, so it’s worth getting down on your hands and knees spending some time digging them out. If you

spot the yellow flower it produces and you decide that you like it, so be it. However, if you have a beloved border full of hard-earned beauty, then I recommend you remove them, because – as the common name suggests – they spread! Annual weeds are easy to remove and eradicate, so long as it’s done before the plant sets seed. If you get to them quickly enough, some time spent hoeing the tops off is enough

to remove them: not having to bend down is an advantage! An example of an annual is groundsel, prolific in most areas, including edges of fields or gardens, roadsides and waste ground. It’s an unscented flower from the daisy family and its seed production can run into the thousands. So, if it’s in the way, just pull it out before the seedhead (very similar to the dandelion seedhead) forms: it’s very tempting for little hands to pick up and blow. You might be reading this wondering why I haven’t suggested blitzing the ground with glyphosate, taking up your ‘flame thrower’ or coating your grassland with clopyralid. There are obvious environmental ramifications to using chemical control, so I think we all have the responsibility to, and capability of, using alternative methods to maintain a balance. Using contact, residual, or systemic chemicals can only harm other plants or wildlife, no matter how careful you think you are being. I would always recommend physical and cultural controls as an alternative, whether it’s hand removal, mulch or enviromesh, it’s worth doing the research. I hope you find something useful in this article. Above all, if you’ve reconsidered the type of control you use, or how important some ‘weeds’ are in keeping our wildlife alive, then I consider my job done. Happy gardening!

Staycation:

the simple art of spending your holidays at home… Sophie-Charlotte Chapman

forget about the endless queues on the motorway or at the border trying to board a ferry to get to france this summer! staying at home and exploring the surroundings of where you live is the new cool thing to do! Here is why and how…

You might have guessed it, ‘staycation’ is made of two simple words: ‘stay’ and ‘vacation’. The concept is easy to understand: you choose to spend your holidays at home while others might prefer going abroad and wasting hours in airports…  When you think of it, there are plenty of benefits to consider when you do decide to

museums, gardens, parks and sights to see; you will find interesting places to visit within less than a two-hour-drive from Hythe. Also, English summers are always full of events and festivals to attend, such as the We Love Hythe Life Food Festival at the end of August! You might think that staycations don’t require any preparation, but it is actually quite the contrary! In order to make the most of your holidays at home here in Kent, make sure to get ready for it. Set up a bucket list on your own, with your partner or even with your kids of what you/they would like to do and write it down. You can also print it and hang it on your fridge so, once your holidays have begun, you can easily tick each of the things you have done!   There are plenty of great things to see and do around Hythe. As a starting point, check out

“You might think that staycations don’t require any preparation, but it is actually quite the contrary! In order to make the most of your holidays at home here in Kent, make sure to get ready for it.” spend your holidays at home. It is obvious to say than the main benefit is how much you can save doing so. Staying at home will, of course, save you money but also a lot energy and time that we normally waste travelling on long journeys to reach our destination. This can be very stressful with young kids or if you suffer from backache or other conditions. Enjoying holidays at home also gives you the opportunity to (re)discover your area, with plenty of castles,

the events section in Hythe Life to find out what’s on and what not to miss around you! The internet and social media, like Instagram, are fabulous ways to start preparing for your staycation. You will be able to find hidden gems in the area, such as new restaurants or local shops to visit, in the same way that tourists do. If the concept of a staycation still doesn’t convince you, you might want to consider a similar, but shorter, idea: a ‘microgap’. Inspired

by the gap year concept, the microgap is simply a quick break from your busy life. But instead of rushing out of the country, you can go off exploring the Garden of England, and the Hythe locale in particular! Finally, there is another important aspect to consider before making your decision for this summer (or your next holidays): how (thanks to you) do staycations and microgaps support the local economy? Spending your holiday money where you live - on attractions, activities and local shops - is a nice way to sustain local businesses and also a great way to contribute to keep villages and old seaside towns alive!  Feel free to share your staycation ideas and pictures @hythelifemagazine (Facebook) and @hythelife (Twitter and Instagram). Sophie-Charlotte is French and married to an Englishman whose family now lives in Kent. She fell in love with Hythe a dozen years ago and visits regularly for holidays and long stays.

Managing

Heel Pain Jo Shapter

The bones in our feet make up around a quarter of all bones in the human body. Each foot takes 1.5 times your body weight with every step you take when walking and five times your body weight when running. It’s not surprising, therefore, that around 2 million people suffer with heel pain in the UK every year. There are many causes of heel pain, however, the most common is plantar fasciitis. Pain from plantar fasciitis can be pretty debilitating, and for many it has a major impact on day-to-day activities.  There is often no obvious cause for the symptoms. There are, however, certain factors which increase the risks. These include tightness of the calf muscles, poor cushioning or arch support in shoes, prolonged standing in unsupportive or very flat footwear, poor foot posture and being overweight. Common symptoms include: ● Pain or tenderness in the heel or arch of the foot, and pain with the first steps taken in the morning or after a period of rest. Walking short distances may improve the pain but longer distances tend to increase the symptoms again. ● Pain when wearing flat or unsupportive footwear.  ● Pain with sudden stretching of the sole of your foot, such as standing on tip toe.

Diagnosis can be made by visiting an allied health practitioner or foot specialist who can take a history and conduct a simple examination. Heel pain management painkillers such as paracetamol, ibuprofen or topical anti-inflammatory gels can help ease the pain; seek advice from your pharmacist on the best option for you. Wrapping a bag off frozen peas in a tea towel and ‘icing’ the area is also an effective method of reducing pain. Don’t leave the ice pack on for more than 15 minutes and don’t apply the ice directly to the skin. Alternatively, rolling the arch of your foot over a frozen water bottle can help as it also stretches the plantar fascia. Rolling the sole of the foot over a golf or tennis ball can also help relieve the pain.  Footwear should have cushioned heels with good arch support. Your foot specialist can prescribe simple in-shoe devices (orthotics) to cushion and accommodate your feet to aid recovery. Research has also shown that exercise can help to improve symptoms and stretches are the first line of treatment. Rest from excessive exercise is recommended but gentle walking can help speed recovery.  The condition usually fully resolves but can take up to 12 months; avoiding excessive activities which aggravate the pain and walking barefoot on hard surfaces can aid recovery. If there is no relief after selfmanagement for six weeks, it is worth contacting a foot specialist for further help, treatment and guidance. Whether you choose to see a podiatrist, chiropodist or a foot health practitioner, it is important to make sure that you are working with a professional who is qualified, experienced and insured. Easy Summer Bunting Craft Project:

Maria Smith

what better way to welcome in the summer than to hang a string of home-made brightly coloured bunting? Perfect for summer garden parties or your children’s bedroom. it’s so simple that the children will love to get involved. Just gather together a few simple supplies (most of these can be bought locally in Hythe, so it’s a perfect project to support our local businesses!) and get the creative juices flowing…

Step One Place your felt piece in the portrait position and fold the sheet in half, side to side (see diagram). Place a ruler from the top right hand corner to the bottom left corner and draw a line. Cut along this line, and open out your flag. Repeat with each piece of felt until you have your desired number of bunting flags.

Step Two there are many ways to decorate your flags: you can be as simple or elaborate as you like, it’s time to get creative: • Sew on sequins, beads and fun-shaped buttons. • Cut out flower or heart shapes with your felt offcuts, pile them up and sew them on in colourful layers. • Sew running or blanket stitch around the flag to create a decorative border. • Add some ribbon trails or bows. • If you are a whizz at knitting or crochet, then why not add some decorative hand-made flowers? Anything goes, have fun…

Step Three threading the ribbon: With a sharp pair of scissors, make a small slit about 2cm in from each side and 1cm down from the top border of the flag (see diagram).

Supplies: • Different coloured felt sheets – (one for each flag)  • Decorative ribbon to thread through the top of the flags at least 2.5cm wide – (line up the felt sheets side by side and double this measurement to gauge the right length of ribbon) • Scissors • Decorative threads • Buttons, sequins, beads and ribbon to decorate • Sewing needle • Ruler • Marker pen

Tips: If you don’t want to see the knots from your sewing on the reverse of the flag, simply cut a backing triangle the same size as the front. Cut slits in the top border as before. Hold the back and front together and when threading the ribbon go through both at the same time.  Use a wide ribbon to make the bunting more stable. Once you thread your flags you can secure them to the ribbon band with a few stitches, this will prevent them from sliding. Alternatively make four slits in the top of the flag, evenly spaced, to thread the ribbon through.

Repeat for each flag. Thread your ribbon through each felt triangle so that the decorative side of the ribbon shows to the front. Have fun, and here’s to a bright and happy summer! Maria Smith is a textile artist and tutor of creative workshops

Summertime

Fitness By Louise Hagger

With the days getting longer and warmer, it is natural to start thinking more about getting into shape. Remember that holidays and beach days should fill you with delight not dread, though! I am all about loving what you have and who you are, and you should (and deserve to) enjoy the summer months whatever your body looks and feels like. Hopefully, however, the sunshine is boosting your energy levels, blasting you with feel-good Vitamin D and inspiring you to get outside and move.  Here are some easy ways to embrace our stunning outdoor world, and some tips for summer sun and exercise safety. Get moving outdoors A brisk walk with friends, dogs or a good audio book is free and easy.  Try to park further out and walk that last bit of your journey or using a fitness tracker to make a step goal; it always feels great when you hit a target. If you like running, or would like to start running, get some good trainers and then consider joining the local Park Run, or one of

You can create simple bodyweight workouts to do in your garden or on a run. Use benches to step or jump on, run up and down the bandstand steps or do some dips, squats, pushups and planks.  Use the park climbing frames whilst your kids are playing. Enjoy the outdoor gym equipment by the library, get your bike out the shed or perhaps try an outdoor fitness class.  Stay safe whilst exercising in the sun If it is going to be a scorcher then aim to get out early in the morning. If you are lucky (and early enough) you might see a stunning sunrise, enjoy the fresh smell of dew on the grass and hear the excitement of the birds as they launch

“If it is going to be a scorcher then aim to get out early in the morning. If you are lucky (and early enough) you might see a stunning sunrise, enjoy the fresh smell of dew on the grass and hear the excitement of the birds as they launch into their song”. the numerous running groups or clubs.  There is a group to cater for every level, whether ‘couch to 5k’ to advanced runners. Head along the canal towards the Marsh for more shade! Play with your children and grandchildren. Kick a ball in the park, have a family game of rounders, cricket or frisbee, bounce on the trampoline, get the swingball out, splash about in the paddling pool.  You will soon be burning calories and creating precious memories.

into their song.  You cannot get this special tranquility at any other time. Best of all, it energises you for the day ahead, often coming hand-in-hand with a natural tendency towards making better food choices as well. The average human body consists of about 60% water (65-75% for children and infants), so it is vital for proper body function that we stay hydrated.  You naturally need to drink more when it is hotter, especially when losing water

and other minerals through sweat. Consider adding some electrolytes and salts to your drinks if you tend to sweat heavily; drinking water alone will not replenish the minerals lost and can in fact dilute them further.   Try to avoid high-calorie sports drinks; instead opt for the widely available specialist powders or tablets that you add to water. I have been recommended unsweetened coconut water as another option, which is apparently similar in structure to the IV fluids used in hospitals; you could add some fresh lemon or lime juice to taste. Choose loose, light-coloured clothing that help wick the moisture away from your body and reflect the heat. Always wear sunscreen, especially on your face, even when cloudy.  We women often have SPF added to our face creams and make-up but it is really important for men and children to apply an SPF booster to moisturiser or sunscreen daily too. Finally, be mindful of the warning signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and sunstroke, which can be very serious indeed. These include nausea, cramping, headaches, dizziness/weakness, delirium and a fast, weak pulse. Do not delay in seeking help if you have these symptoms. Enjoy the weather and our beautiful surroundings of sea, canal, hills and countryside, it is one big fitness playground!

Mid-Table finish for the Cannons

Bostik League Final Table

Whilst The Cannons finished 7th for the second successive year, we were spared the heart-breaking last minute drama of 2017/18 season; the Cannons were a clear 10 points behind the team in the last playoff position, as opposed to losing out on goal difference. Despite gaining a solid finishing position, it was ultimately a disappointing season for a team that had the potential to push for promotion this year. However, as they say in football, ‘we go again’ in August with a determination to find a way out of what is a tough division to crack. It’s inevitable at this level that there will be comings and goings between seasons, however there appears to be the start of a big shake up at the club. Whilst four players have already committed to another season: Chris Kinnear, Ollie Rowe, Tom Carlton and Charlie Webster, four key players have confirmed on Twitter that they are moving to pastures new. Zak Ansah, Ryan Palmer , Salvyn Kisitu and George Kamurasi have all stated they are no longer Cannons players. All four play for successful Sunday League side SE Dons and rumours are circulating that the team will be playing Saturday football next season. A big loss for the Cannons, however manager Denly seems to have big plans for next season! Although the players will be missed, many supporters had questioned the players’ commitment to the club and their ability to perform at 100% for the Cannons whilst also playing for another club. No doubt suitable replacements will be found and no doubt we will be reported on some new signings in the next edition.

HL Sports FOOTBALL

Three Hythe Town Youth FC Teams head off to Europe Excitement is growing for three Hythe Town Youth teams as they head off to Belgium in May for 3 nights to take part in an International Tournament ‘The Hageland Cup’. A huge amount of planning has made this trip possible, resulting in 93 players and parents being able to enjoy being part of this established tournament, which this year involves 207 teams from 9 countries. The Under 11’s took part in a tournament in Spain in 2016 and, after success in Barcelona, were very eager to repeat the experience again. Saving hard for the next 3 years, they were the first team to express an interest to go to Belgium. Shortly afterwards 2 further teams stepped up and so the planning for Hagelands 2019 began. The Under 12’s started their fund-raising last summer to ensure all players would be able to go to Belgium. Both the under 12s managers thought it was vital that their players were involved in their fund-raising efforts. From helping at the Hythe Town Youth Boot Fair on the Green in 2018, attending quiz nights, sponsored bike rides and various other sponsored events, their target was reached by Christmas. They are enormously thankful for additional funds which were added from Concept Multi-Car and Howdens Ashford. Unfortunately, the original 3rd team dropped out but the Under 14’s quickly stepped in to complete the trio of Hythe Town Youth teams taking on European opposition. The organisers are extremely grateful to DFDS who have supported this tour with the ferry crossings, as well as the tour t-shirts. They also extend their thanks to all 9 local schools (both primary and secondary) who have fully supported this trip by allowing players to take one day off school for travel. Hopefully the tour to Belgium this year, will be a blue print for all future Hythe Town Youth teams of all ages to have the opportunity to take part in both overseas or UK tournaments.

Looking towards 2020, our current Under 15 Colts are organising this year’s Hythe Town Youth FC boot fair on The Green on Sunday 9th June as part of their fund-raising efforts for their overseas tour to Spain in June 2020, as well as having a float in this year’s Venetian Fete in August. They have also benefitted from the full support of The Saltwood Club, and are holding events there throughout the year.  They are still looking for sponsors, if of any interest please contact: John King jthek8211@googlemail.com  or Lisa Willis lisawillis74@sky.com We will have an update on how they fared at the tournament in our next edition.

WATER POLO

Hythe Aqua Update We are pleased to report that Hythe Aqua Junior Water Polo Team are Champions of the Division 3 London League 16/U 2019.  The team won 6 games and drew 2 to become champions. This is fantastic news, and the whole Hythe Life team would like to congratulate the team on their amazing achievement.
