KEEPING HYTHE TIDY Hythe ECG members join Sandgate volunteers for a beach cleanup by Alanna Fraser
I have to admit it: I am a pathologically untidy person. The surface of my desk hasn't seen the light of day for several years and my (now adult) godson is still traumatised by the carpet of discarded notes and, I'm ashamed to admit, odd banana skin that greeted him when he first came to my student digs some twenty years ago.
Whilst my tolerance of mess – my own and other people's – is at the upper end of the spectrum, when it comes to litter, it's a completely different story. “THIS COUNTRY IS BEAUTIFUL BUT ONLY FROM THE ANKLES UP” As the famous travel author Bill Bryson once said, “This country is beautiful – but only from the ankles up”. But the invasion of Hythe's beautiful public spaces by other people's rubbish not only taints the look of the local landscape: it can also do untold harm to our local wildlife. As someone who once emerged from a summer dip in the sea off Seabrook with a fishing hook firmly embedded in one leg, I can speak from some experience of how dangerous litter can be to animal populations, whether marine, avian or land-lubbing. Thank goodness, then, that Hythe has a committed and forwardthinking band of civic-minded citizens willing to do something about it. And that's why I found myself, one cold and windy February day, signing up for one of the regular beach clean-ups organised by Transition Hythe (now known as the Hythe Environmental Community Group). Armed by the helpful volunteers with gloves, high-vis vest, grab stick and bin bags, I set off along the beach with the other hardy souls to rid it of some of the detritus – both washed up and left behind – accumulated over the winter months. High winds initially made this a Sisyphean task (in Greek mythology, Sisyphus was cursed for all eternity to roll a large rock up a hill, only for it to roll back down again) for like Sisyphus, every time I filled my bin bag with beach detritus, a great gust of wind sent its contents skittering out again for me to pick back up. But perseverance won the day and, by the end of my stint, I had collected a couple of bags’ worth of rubbish and, clichéd as it might sound, felt just a little bit proud that I had given something back to the beach-scape I so often admire. In fact, it was such a satisfying experience that I signed up for the spring litter pick as well, this time joining forces with a couple of old hands on a sunny and warm spring day to roam the banks of the canal with trusty gloves and pick-up sticks. I strolled home afterwards, sun shining and birds singing, the town seemed to be positively basking in its spick and span appearance.
8 | www.hythelife.org.uk
THE BENEFITS OF LITTER PICKING The regular litter picks are a fantastic idea for a myriad of reasons. Not only do they provide a gentle form of physical exercise, lungfuls of fresh air and a sense of camaraderie, they are also a great way to educate younger residents, serve as a visible reminder to others to put their rubbish in the bin and, as Keep Britain Tidy research has shown, help to avoid the ‘litter leads to more litter’ mentality. Put simply, an area with a litter problem tends to encourage more littering: the presence of litter almost supplies permission to others to give the nearest bin a wide berth. FROM TRANSITION HYTHE TO THE HYTHE ENVIRONMENTAL COMMUNITY GROUP Hythe’s litter picks are organised by the Hythe Environmental Community Group. The group has undergone a recent rebranding but has been busy for more than eight years. Amongst regular annual events, HECG arranges spring plant and seed swaps (the aim is for no money to change hands!), a winter energy reduction project (which shows energy loss from homes using a thermal image camera) and the very popular autumnal apple pressing day in the High Street. Working with Sustainable Connections, a local community energy company, the group also has a pop-up ‘energy surgery’ in Hythe planned for the autumn, to help people to reduce their energy bills. Taking pride in the many lovely vistas that Hythe has to offer indicates a community that cares, and a community that cares about its local environment tends to care more about its residents too. So... get litter-picking!
NEXT LITTER PICKS The next litter picks are due to will take place on 3rd June (meet at the Green, Hythe) and 2nd September (meet at the BP garage in Seabrook). For further information on the Hythe Environmental Community Group or to be added to its mailing list, please email hytheECG@yahoo.com

Hythe Watch NEWS FROM HY THE TOWN COUNCIL
Message from the Town Mayor
Councillor’s Corner John Gabris OUR TOWN I’ve always been fascinated by the amazing history of Hythe. As a professional photographer, I feel truly privileged to have so much history around for me to record. The town has medieval and Georgian buildings, as well as a Saxon/Norman church on the hill and a Victorian seafront promenade. Hythe was once defended by two castles, Saltwood and Lympne. The Town Hall, a former guildhall, was built in 1794, its fireplace designed by the Adam Brothers. It also doubled as a court to deal with, and serve swift justice to, offenders. The remains of the court are still present in the Town Hall and the “dock” is in the Hythe museum – a favourite for our younger museum visitors. There are numerous events over the next few months in Hythe to keep both professional and amateur photographers busy. I am particularly looking forward to the fabulous Hythe Venetian Fete, which will be held on 16th August 2017. Whilst in Hythe terms it started relatively recently (it was once part of Hythe cricket week in the 1860s) it has gained international fame and there are always interesting happenings to record. Whether it’s someone accidentally toppling into the water, the colourful costumes or the enthusiastic band players, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to be creative with your camera. Although photography is a living for me, I don’t charge Hythe Town Council for my shots, and hopefully the council will be able to use some of this year’s images in its publicity.
12 | www.hythelife.org.uk
As I come to the end of my second term as Hythe’s mayor, I reflect on how honoured I feel to have held this elected position, and how delighted I am that I have had so many varied and interesting experiences. One experience I did not welcome was my illness. Some residents will know that I was unwell over the winter months and spent Christmas and New Year in hospital. Fortunately, I’m now back in action and I remain as enthusiastic as ever. I look forward to working hard as your town mayor for the last few weeks of my term of office. Michael Lyons The hard-fought Kent County Council election campaign reminds me of how important local government is, and how passionately people feel about our town. As a Shepway District councillor as well as Hythe town mayor, I don't see how the current three levels of local government can continue unchanged. Kent County has about 1.5m residents – more than many small countries. It is not really local and does not seem to have the resources to achieve all it wants. Shepway District is both too small to be strategic and too remote to completely understand Hythe’s issues – and there are simply not enough councillors to do all the committee work. Hythe Town Council is community based, but does not currently have the people or financial resource to pick up the work from the other councils. Something is likely to break and I want to ensure that it is not your town council. I have encouraged council officers to prepare to run more local things here, and we have started by organising the floral displays at East Street roundabout, where the management was previously with Shepway District Council.
Cinque Ports Community Flag King Edward I of England granted the citizens of the Cinque Ports – including Hythe - special privileges, including the right to bring goods into the country without paying import duties. In return the ports would supply him with men and ships in time of war. Whilst members of the Cinque Ports have lost most of their privileges, Hythe and other towns along the south coast are still proud member of the Confederation of the Cinque Ports. Until now, due to complex vexillological (the history, symbolism and meaning of flags) matters, the confederation hasn’t had a way of promoting itself to visitors. Fortunately the Confederation has approved the adoption and registration of a community flag which could be used by members of the general public, without infringing the law relating to the use of the Cinque Ports' coat of arms. This design was chosen for submission to the Flag Institute. In future, you could see items of clothing, lapel pins and other objects promoting our famous history.

Hythe Watch NEWS FROM HY THE TOWN COUNCIL
Coastal Community Team It’s been a frantic three months at Oaklands while a small team of representatives from business, community organisations, council and council officers put together an economic plan for the town. Last autumn, the team submitted a bid for £10,000 seed funding to develop the plan, and Hythe was fortunate in being one of only twenty four bids that were successful. We learnt this in November 2016, but we were embargoed until the end of January from letting anyone know because it had yet to be announced to Parliament. After a huge effort from a number of dedicated residents and councillors, the plan was submitted in time. KEY ELEMENTS OF THE PLAN ARE: Identity - To develop a cohesive Hythe brand identity to increase its recognition and diversify its employment base. Tourism - To improve visitor numbers and improve their experience by creating a distinct packaged offer. Community - To create a sense of place for the community to improve quality of life and reflect the needs of the social mix for young and old. Partnering - To partner and engage with likeminded local communities to respond to collective needs. Timing - For each theme, we’ve compiled a list of projects with costs and timescales. We think some of these can be achieved in six months; others will take twenty years or longer. Unfortunately, just after the plan was submitted, the government announced a general election, which means that new initiatives tend to seize up until the new government is installed and has properly formulated policies. However, we are hopeful that we can take the plan forward later in the year.

Allotment vacancies Hythe Town Council almost always has vacancies at its allotment sites in Eaton Lands, although the sites in Longbridge and Twiss Road tend to be snapped up much quicker. Allotmenting is healthy, low cost and gives you exercise, great food and an instant social life. What more could you want? If you’d like an allotment, please contact us at admin@Hythe_Kent.com.
Banned Not really. We’d love to provide more space for groups and bands to play in this year’s FREE summer season of concerts, but we ran out of Sundays. Hythe Town Council pays bands to play, and considers all the applications carefully. Next year we aim to hold auditions for even more bands. Please come along and listen – it’s a super, free way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon.
Flower power We all like to make a good impression to visitors, and the flower display at the East Street roundabout makes a powerful statement that Hythe is friendly, welcoming and open for business. Shepway District Council budget constraints meant that it could no longer pay for the beautiful flower display at East Street, and asked Hythe Town Council to take it over. Following discussions with the team at Hythe in Bloom, who will provide the expertise (and much of the hard work), the council agreed and this year’s display will be paid for out of Hythe Town Council resources. If you would like to volunteer to help Hythe in Bloom, pass your details to Hythe Town Council and we’ll pass your details on.

Hythe Watch NEWS FROM HY THE TOWN COUNCIL
A retirement in the family
Move along. It’s just another new website Old news. Everyone has a website these days, and councils are no exception. It may be old news, but websites are now vital information sources. It’s rare that anyone says a local council communicates too much. More often, we hear comments like, ‘nobody told me’ or ‘why didn’t you let me know earlier?’ We try, but with all the expensive advertising from consumer goods companies, it’s not easy – with limited resources – to break through and let you know what’s happening. Earlier this year, we launched a new website at www.hythetc.kentparishes.gov.uk to try to improve the way we communicate. We’ll be adding features as time goes on, but our analytics reports (how we measure web traffic) show that that there are already more than three times as many people using the website now than this time last year. If you get a chance to visit our site and let us know what you think by using the response form on the website, we’d love to hear from you.
After 15 years as an accounts clerk working for Hythe Town Council, Adrian Wilson decided to retire at the end of March 2017. Adrian is renowned for his dry sense of humour and his patience in explaining complex, public accounting financial issues. During his time with the council, he has seen plenty of change. Back when he started, computers were still a relatively new addition, and websites for local councils were not even dreamt of. Yet Adrian has accepted that the world is changing and has helped the council to digitise Adrian Wilson its systems, most recently with a detailed reinstallation of the council’s ERP (enterprise resource planning) software. He is living proof that age is no barrier to expertise in digital technologies. In his well-deserved retirement, Adrian will be applying his talents to help with church and music activities near his home in Folkestone. His colleagues and Hythe Town councillors wish him well for the future.

Overcome being overwhelmed by
your emails
In this age of ‘always on’ communication, your email inbox fills up quickly, doesn’t it? …And not always with emails that you actually need or want to read: there’s often too much spam and junk mail. It can be really distracting and can get in the way of getting what you need to get done and, often, important messages end up getting lost amongst the junk.
Here are a few suggestions for getting your inbox cleared out to ensure that you keep your important email organised. UNSUBSCRIBE FROM JUNK MAIL As the junk mail hits your inbox, it can be tempting to just delete the emails rather than unsubscribe from the recurring ones. It may be quicker in the short term, but in the long term it will take up more time to continue to delete those emails, not to mention the emotional effect of having an inbox that is overflowing all the time. SET UP FILTERS Most email services allow you to set up filters that tell your mail service to treat certain messages a certain way. They can be a really good way of moving emails that you want to keep but don’t need to look at yet into a folder for later. For example, you could filter all the emails that relate to your website into a folder that you check once a week when you’re doing your website admin. That way, you don’t have to read or think about those emails until you have carved out the time to do it. USE TOOLS TO HELP YOU My favourite email tool is Sanebox.com. It automatically sorts your emails into different folders, enabling you to divert off the less important emails and only keep the potentially urgent stuff in your main inbox. The other
18 | www.hythelife.org.uk
emails are held in separate folders, such as @SaneLater and @SaneNews, which allows you to deal with them in priority order. Sanebox also has a function called @SaneBlackHole that, I would suggest, is better than unsubscribing from all the newsletters you don’t want, especially the spammy ones. Unsubscribing from these might actually let the sender know that your email is a valid one where emails get read – so they end up not unsubscribing you and sending you even more unwanted emails instead! All you have to do is to move any unwanted emails into that folder and the system will ‘learn’ to continue to move emails from that sender into the folder. What the folder effectively does is deletes the emails before you’ve even seen them. SCHEDULE TIME TO PROCESS EMAIL One of the key strategies that can really help you to manage your emails more effectively is to, counter-intuitively, limit the time that you spend in your inbox. By spending all day on email you end up treating it as your ‘to do list’ and then are constantly interrupted by the distraction of new emails appearing. When you process your inbox to clear it, you need to make a decision on each email. Each will fall into one of the following three categories: • Delete or archive • Respond – done • Respond – add to task list
If you take one of the above actions on each email as you go through the list, you will be able to clear your emails. If you don’t, for instance if you leave a few to think about and deal with later, your inbox will gradually fill up and continue to overwhelm you. This approach does take discipline and can take a little while to get used to but it really can make a massive difference to your email management and your sanity! KEEP YOUR INBOX AND EMAIL MAINTAINED As with anything, it’s important to regularly maintain your email and inbox, otherwise things can easily get out of hand. If you are using filters, that will help to keep things organised automatically. Make sure that you regularly review the filters and set up new ones as needed to ensure that everything is running smoothly. Perhaps schedule in a bit of admin time once a week or once a month to make sure you keep on top of your email organisation.

Caring for Cats by Jenny Wolfe
The Folkestone and Hythe Branch of Cats Protection is busier than ever, taking in stray, abandoned and unwanted cats. Many cats come in with health problems requiring on-going or specialist treatment.
The number of unwanted kittens gets ever bigger and to help with this problem, the charity is offering a heavily subsidised neutering scheme for a limited period - for cats living with people on benefits or low incomes, so cat owners can get their pets neutered for just £5. All of this work is carried out by unpaid volunteers and costs a great deal of money. Most of the funds raised come from the shop in Hythe High Street, which was recently refurbished. The new, lighter facilities are much improved and the new manager is already extremely busy! The Branch is also seeking ‘whole house fosterers’. This means caring for a cat until a permanent home can be found whilst Cats' Protection pay all expenses incurred. If you would like to have a cat around but don't want to take on a permanent cat of your own, this is a great solution. If you would like to find out more, please ring: 01303 237744 or 01303 247540.
The Folkestone and Hythe Branch is part of a national network of over 200 volunteer-run branches and 32 centres that help around 200,000 cats each year.

Owning a puppy
by Antony Hinge
The arrival of a new puppy into a home brings great excitement and joy, but with that comes all the responsibilities and worries that new ownership entails. There is so much to think about. Bed, basket or crate? A new puppy will sleep for nearly twenty hours a day, ‘eat, drink and empty’ for one hour and spend three hours engaging in energetic exploration and play. As such, they need somewhere comfortable and peaceful to rest. Crates are becoming increasingly popular as an indoor kennel which, if used responsibly, can speed up house training, thus reducing toileting accidents and minimising unwanted destructive behaviour. They must not be seen as a cage for extended periods but should be a place of sanctuary for the puppy so that it can rest and feel safe. Some people like to have a puppy close to them at night, but remember: once they have got used to it, it can be very difficult to stop. House training Puppies will generally usually urinate soon after waking and defecate soon after eating. It is best to give them every possible opportunity at these times to perform in the appropriate place – usually out in the garden or similar. Rest periods are usually 3-4 hours long so expect to need to take them out at those approximate intervals and longer at night, similarly after eating. Rewarding appropriate toileting is a good thing: either with a small treat or just a bit of praise and fun play. Never punish inappropriate toileting or accidents. Feeding Puppies should be fed 3-4 times a day, reducing to twice daily from 6 months of age, adjusting to appetite. It is the amount a day that is important, not the frequency. Usually stick to the breeder’s recommendations for a week or two before making any changes to food. There is a wide variety of well prepared, commercial foods available which are suitable for puppies. It is best to avoid fresh food diets until the puppy is settled in and become more fully grown. Vaccinations These are essential and protect the puppy against the major contagious diseases (parvovirus, distemper, canine hepatitis and leptospirosis). Puppies are recommended to have a minimum course of two vaccinations (typically starting from 8 weeks old) according to risk and the type of vaccine used.
“Mummy, Mummy! He’s so gorgeous. Can I cuddle him, can I feed him? When can I take him for a walk?”
Worming Puppies acquire roundworms at every possible opportunity: some pass directly into the puppy across the womb, others via the mother’s milk and then from eggs passed out in faeces. This means that regular worming is important, especially as some species of worm can affect people – especially children – and can damage eyes. Lungworm can also be picked up from slugs and snails with potentially fatal consequences. Puppies should be wormed monthly with a suitable effective product. Exercise Until vaccinations are well under way, exercise should be restricted to home and garden – but visits to play from other healthy and vaccinated dogs are good for socialisation. Once they can go out, walks should be limited initially but increased as the puppy develops. Extended vigorous exercise should be avoided, especially with the larger breeds, as this can increase risk of arthritis or developmental defects. A good start in life should lead to a lifetime of fun and pleasure for both us and our faithful friends. Antony Hinge B.Vet.Med. MRCVS BarrowHill Veterinary Centre

Summer Garden
By Mark Whyte
So bright and blousey spring has slid into the past for another year and summer marches forth. A time for barbecues on the patio, breakfast on the decking, playing cricket on a lush, green lawn and reading in a hammock, swinging gently between the shade of trees.
A time when our beds and borders are in full swing, our pots are brightly dancing to the tune of the season and the heady scent of flowers competes with the hum of bees for our attention. But none of this comes without the gardener's pride and hard work. To ensure that we get the best from our gardens this summer, there is lots to be getting on with. Our bedding plants need to be fed, watered and deadheaded to ensure long bursts of colour. Similarly the roses we have lovingly pruned and mulched through the winter need blood, fish and bone (or similar organic fertiliser available at our shop in Hythe High Street) to keep their hunger satisfied - and don’t forget to deadhead after the first flush of flowers to get a longer season. The birds have finished nesting so we can make the first trim of yew and other leafy hedges, such as beech. Be sure to use good sharp tools and, if the hedge is high, call the professionals at Hythe Garden Services.
“Then followed that beautiful season... Summer... Filled was the air with a dreamy and magical light; and the landscape Lay as if new created in all the freshness of childhood.” Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
In dry weather, raise the mower blades slightly as longer grass stays greener. We need to keep on top of weeding too: the wrong plant in the wrong place will deprive our favourites of valuable light, nutrients and water. Spring flowering shrubs such as ceanothus, weigela, spirea and deutzia need carefully pruning now; their flush of flowers next spring is dependent on the growth they put on this summer. All of our borders, pots, hanging baskets and vegetable beds will need watering during the driest periods. We can water wisely by making use of water butts to collect what rain there is and by ensuring we water the soil around the plant and not the plant itself. And so the list goes on: staking taller plants, checking clematis for signs of wilt, more deadheading, clearing ponds, harvesting vegetable... but in this most rewarding of seasons, take time to enjoy your garden and, as they say, smell the roses.

A trip to Hythe followed on by short break to France By Sophie Chapman
The first time I heard about Hythe was about ten years ago. I came here with my in-laws to discover the place they chose to retire to. I have been returning with my three children every school holiday – and we never get bored.
There is always something new to do, to see, to experiment. New shops, new activities, new places to explore: there is always so much we want to try. Our favourite attraction is still the RH&DR (Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway). We love watching the miniature steam locomotive changing direction on the turntable so that the train can leave again with new passengers on board. Most of the time we stop at New Romney station for a short break. It leaves us enough time to visit the toy train museum above the café, and to enjoy a snack and a go on the playground. But if you have more time, I strongly recommend you continue the journey up to Dungeness, where the restaurant has been renovated and where you can enjoy an incredible desert landscape – a unique terrain for the British Isles. Dungeness beach is famous for its typical, and more modern, fisherman huts. There also stands an imposing lighthouse you can ascend if you feel adventurous enough! If you pay attention on your return to Hythe’s Light Railway station, you might find one of the new leaflets – designed by Andy Tuohy, a local designer and illustrator – featuring the ‘Big Train, Little Train Country Walk’. Michael Sargent mapped out a route to go directly from there to Sandling station, to encourage people to explore the area in an eco-friendly way. But if you are more of a bike person, I recommend that you plan a family bike trip down the promenade, heading for Folkestone. Alternatively, you can opt for another, less regular and more
There is always something new to do, to see, to experiment. New shops, new activities, new places to explore: there is always so much we want to try. adventurous route by walking/biking along the military canal, where you can stop for a nice rest in the Lower Leas Coastal Park. From there you will be able to enjoy the view of the Channel and see the French coast if it’s a clear day. If you plan on staying there a bit longer, don’t forget to visit the Creative Quarter up and down the Old High Street, where you will find a quaint selection of cafés and restaurants accommodating all tastes. If gazing over the sea towards the continent makes you feel like a trip abroad, note that the Eurotunnel Terminal is only a few minutes’ drive from Hythe (take Station Road then Blackhouse Hill). Check-in and boarding can be really quick outside of bank holiday weekends and crossing will only take thirty-five minutes, leading you straight onto the motorway signposting two options: Paris or Rouen. Rouen is located in the heart of northern Normandy and about eighty miles northwest of Paris. Famous for its beautiful churches – including one of the most magnificent cathedrals in Europe – Rouen is very much like Canterbury. You will find a lot of cobbled, pedestrianised streets and medieval timbered houses. This place is full of history: from Jeanne of d’Arc and the Vikings through to the Second World War, there is always so much going on there. One of the best art museums in France (www.musees-rouen-normandie.fr) regularly welcomes important and impressive art exhibitions, like Picasso in the summer of 2017. You will also find a permanent collection of impressionist paintings there. The town is full of fine restaurants where you can enjoy local Norman delicacies and a very wide variety of local cheeses. So if you fancy leaving Hythe for a few days and would consider heading to Normandy, don’t hesitate to email me (info@hythelife.org.uk) and I will warmly recommend the best places to stay and visit.

HILL
16th August at the Royal Military canal The popular Hythe Venetian Fete returns to the Royal Military canal on the 16th August this year, with gates opening at 4pm and the first floating tableau procession starting at 7pm. The unique, biennial procession is led by a ceremonial barge carrying the mayors of the Confederation of Cinque Ports, dressed in their full regalia. The second parade starts at 8.50: always a spectacular sight as the illuminated floats light up the canal, aided by the thousands of fairy lights which twinkle in the trees along the route. As in previous years, there will be plenty of entertainment on the canal banks, including a funfair, stalls selling refreshments, and other merchandisers so make sure you plan plenty of time to browse before the first float procession and at the interval before the second procession. As dusk falls, the Hythe sky will blaze with an array of colour as the impressive firework display bursts into life. Planning of the event is well underway with twenty eight entries for the floats already confirmed, each one with a humorous, historic or topical theme. The fete, which is organised by the Hythe Venetian Fete Society, relies on the support of its main sponsors who sponsor the prizes and the concerts. We also rely upon the many people who design and decorate the floats that make the processions such a visual treat, and the hundreds of volunteers who give up their time to enable the day to run so efficiently. The Fete Society also arranges four, free band concerts on the canal's south bank which start on Saturday 12th and continue until the evening before the big day itself. These concerts are very popular and attract plenty of spectators. Do bring a picnic and enjoy the entertainment! The Fete takes many months of meticulous careful planning but the only thing we cannot plan is the weather so once again, we hope for a sunny, dry day!

Summer’s Bounty by Jill Sargent
As spring blossoms fade, the Garden of England is bursting with amazing produce. From the last flush of asparagus to super ripe strawberries, from lush cherries to plump plums, summer is a fantastic time to be in Kent. Such a wealth of seasonal produce can make it hard to choose.
You will find Kentish ice creams at many local farm shops, retailers and events near you – or pay a visit to your local ice cream parlour!
You will find Kent-grown fruits in your supermarket – do look at the labels, you can do your bit for Kent no matter where you shop! You will find a wealth of varieties that aren’t widely available in your local stores and markets. Take the simple plum: from Violetta, to Victoria, to Marjorie’s Seedlings, there are over 300 varieties and that’s before we start on the greengages and damsons that form part of the same family! Perfect to snack on, and also to use in homemade jams for that taste of summer later in the year. There are also plenty of artisan jam makers if you don’t want the trouble of making your own. SUPPORT OUR DAIRY FARMS In recent years many of the UK’s dairy farmers have been struggling to survive. The number of dairy farms has halved in the last ten years to around 10,500, and the Royal Association of Dairy Farmers says farms are currently closing at the rate of around five a week. A few pence on a pint of milk really does make a difference, so seeking out and buying local milk, cream, cheese and ice cream all helps.

It’s great to see that Kent’s dairy farmers are rising to the challenge, whether by bottling and selling their own milk, installing milk vending machines or diversifying into cheese and ice cream production. Ten years ago Kent barely had a cheese industry to speak of, and now we have a number of successful cheesemakers who are winning a whole array of national and international awards. This is not only good news for farmers and makers, but also for the many Kent eateries who are now able to serve a real Kentish cheese, whether it’s as a humble ploughman’s or an after-dinner cheeseboard. One of the other areas of innovation has been among Kent’s ice cream makers. There are lots of new flavours: Kentish Honey & Honeycomb, Peanut Brittle or Kent Cobnut. You can even have your favourite cocktail as ice cream – Strawberry Daiquiri, anyone? You will find Kentish ice creams at many local farm shops, retailers and events near you – or pay a visit to your local ice cream parlour! GETTING OUT AND ABOUT Summer is all about getting out and about and enjoying all Kent has to offer. Why not come and see us at the Kent County Show from the 7th – 9th July? We will be showcasing over 40 Kent producers in our dedicated area with food, drink and artisan crafts to try and to take home to enjoy. The show is the highlight of the food and farming calendar and is organised by the Kent County Agricultural Society, a registered charity. Among their charitable objectives, they offer scholarships and awards to support youngsters wanting to pursue careers in agriculture. So as well as a cracking day out, you will be supporting the next generation of farmers who will be growing our food of the future! We are also delighted to be supporting this year's Hythe Life Food Festival in August. After a successful first year, we are looking forward to a foodie packed few days. With live music, carefully selected stalls and a focus on bringing the community of Hythe together, it has all the ingredients for a great family day out. Lots of Produced in Kent members will be there, waiting to tempt you with tasty treats and the odd tipple! Join the fun from 26th – 28th August.

The adventure continues Well, time flies and here I am again with my third article for Hythe Life. Hey, it’s getting warmer too! That means more painting time as the days lengthen – and I can finally shed some of the many layers of jumpers that see me through painting plein air during the winter months.
As spring is finally in full swing, subjects for the avid plein air painter abound. I, for one, simply can’t find enough hours in the day to get out and paint. This makes me consider how I go out and find the perfect subject matter to paint on the Romney Marsh. For several years, I’ve been using the car when out looking for the perfect scene or view; while this is great, it can be difficult to stop and paint safely on the winding Marsh roads. All too often I’ve seen a composition that I couldn’t stop at and, as is the way of things, I then forget about it.
was in the car, so another added bonus with the saving on petrol! I’m now finding that there really is a beautiful composition around every corner of the Romney Marsh. However, you don’t need a Priscilla or masses of equipment to get out painting en plein air. You can simplify what you take and just go with a small watercolour set and pad or a sketch book and pencils. The aim is just to get out, enjoy the countryside and enjoy creating your art. This brings me to another point about en plein air: how
Whilst on the subject of light, don’t be put off by a grey day or hazy sun. This can be very beneficial to the plein air painter. Overcast or dull days serve to flatten the light. This means that the light and shadows do not change so quickly, giving you more time to capture your chosen composition. It has the overall effect of deepening the chroma of colours. Whilst talking of colour, don’t be seduced into buying lots of colours to go and paint with, as there are too many choices. Basically three primary colours (a red, yellow and blue), a good white and
She gets me to places that are inaccessible by car so rather than having to pass by wonderful painting opportunities, I can stop and paint at my leisure. This has led me to the new lady in my life: Priscilla, my new bicycle. She’s an ex-trade bike that I managed to acquire for a reasonable price and has a basket on the front that is easily big enough for all the painting equipment I need to paint en plein air. Priscilla adds a great deal of flexibility too. She gets me to places that are inaccessible by car so rather than having to pass by wonderful painting opportunities, I can stop and paint at my leisure. Strangely enough, I find I’m even covering less mileage on the bike than I

the effects of light relate to your composition. There are no hard and fast rules – it's up to you – but here are a couple of things to bear in mind. If you’re painting with the light behind you, this will have the effect of deepening the colours in your composition. Conversely, painting into the light (called contre-jour) will have the effect of bleaching out colour. Regardless of choice, though, I would recommend a hat or cap with a wide brim for sunny days: it helps to stop glare and will protect your eyes if painting into the light.
a burnt umber for darks are all you really need. This will not give all colours but will serve to teach you about mixing. Paintings made this way will have an overall harmony. It also means less painting equipment, which equals less weight, less cost and less faffing around. As days lengthen, more hours are afforded to us to paint and many more options can be covered. Indeed, if painting Romney Marsh, you’ll see me riding Priscilla or with her nearby. By all means please stop and have a chat if you do.

The Mighty Mouse: Hythe’s Olympic hero by Alanna Fraser
Following the successful staging of the 2012 Olympics, London is set to catch sports’ fever again this summer as the world’s best track and field stars come to town for the IAAF World Championships.
One of the hopefuls is Saltwood athlete and 400m hurdler, Jack Green, who will be hoping to erase the disappointment of missing out on a medal in Rio. Green is not our area’s only famous athlete, though. Step forward – in this case, quite literally – the late 50km race-walker, Olympic champion and longtime Hythe resident, Don Thompson: the only British man to win a gold medal at the 1960 summer Olympics in Rome and still the oldest international athlete ever to represent Great Britain. Eagleeyed promenaders may have spotted the plaque commemorating this achievement on the seafront between Hythe and Seabrook. An athlete is a curious beast, endowed with a serendipitous alignment of personal qualities, physical prowess and the kind hand of fate. Exhibiting the heart of a lion, body of the gods and a backbone of steel, most of the most successful and well-known track and field – think Jessia Ennis-Hill, Mo Farah, Paula Radcliffe – give the impression of being somehow superhuman.
“He was a great athlete who defied what a top sportsman is.” Not so the 5ft 5in Don Thompson, the full-time insurance clerk whose bespectacled, diminutive and unathletic appearance gave little clue to his exceptional sporting talent. In fact, as his long-time friend and rival, Paul Nihill, later recalled in an interview, “He was a great athlete who defied what a top sportsman is. If asked to do a couple of press-ups, he couldn't.” It was perhaps fitting, then, that Thompson’s chosen discipline was the most eccentric discipline within the sport of athletics: the race walk. Adopting the wobbly-legged gait of a drunken sailor, competitors must shuffle and sway their way along a 50km course (over 30 miles in old money) at a cadence rate equivalent to that achieved by 800m runners. Even in an event best known for its idiosyncrasy, Thompson’s training methods were highly unorthodox and are now the subject of sporting folklore in their own right. At the Melbourne Olympics in 1956, Thompson had suffered badly in the heat and collapsed at the 45km mark from dehydration (in fact, this was the only race in his career that he did not finish). He later recalled, “I was in fifth place when the dehydration took full effect. It was as if the road had turned itself into a wall. In fact, it was me slowly keeling over. I hit the ground and tried to get up but I couldn’t. I was picked up and taken away in an ambulance.”
“He set about acclimatising himself in his bathroom.”
56 | www.hythelife.org.uk
A meticulous planner, Thompson recognised that the oppressive temperatures in Rome would be his biggest threat and was determined to avoid a repeat of Melbourne. Since he could not afford to take time away from his desk to acclimatise in a warmer country, he set about recreating the hot and humid conditions of an Italian summer in his bathroom. Using heaters and kettles of boiled water, he closed the windows and doors to enable him to train at home in hothouse temperatures of up to 38C (100F). As he explained, “Although the race was scheduled to begin in the late afternoon, I knew it would still be blisteringly hot, so I recreated the humidity of Rome in the bathroom of my parents’ house. I stuffed towels around the door and window, brought in a Valor stove and steaming pots and kettles of water, then turned the wall-heater up full.” Thompson would then don his tracksuit and his mother’s coat before exercising in the postage stamp space between the bath and the lavatory. THE MIGHTY MOUSE His unorthodox regime, coupled with more conventional, if crack of dawn, 4am training sessions may have raised the odd smirk amongst his competitors but it paid off in spectacular fashion. Having taken his two weeks of annual leave to attend the Games in Rome (the company later gave it back to him on account of his success) Thompson found himself in the lead by the halfway stage after the two previous race leaders had been disqualified for technique violations. SOARING TEMPERATURES With temperatures rising above 30C (86F) during the race, Thompson found that his only rival at the back end of the race was John Ljungren, the Swedish gold medallist in the same event at the 1948 London games. The two continued to go toe to toe but, as the 40-year old Ljungren wilted in the heat, Thompson wearing clip-on shades attached to his thick-rimmed spectacles and a handkerchief lovingly stitched to to the back of his peaked cap by his mother ward off the heat – strode to victory in an Olympic record time of 4:25:30. His remarkable win against the odds earned him the epithet, ’Il Topolino’ (’the Mighty Mouse’) from the Italians and national hero status back home. He even achieved the dizzy height of a waxwork of himself in Madame Tussauds, although he was heard to complain that it was not a good likeness! Thompson’s fastidious preparation was deemed to be the reason for
his success but his unassuming physical appearance belied an exceptionally talented athlete. Born in 1933, Don Thompson discovered his calling by accident at the age of 18. Previously a middle distance runner and javelin-thrower, he turned to the race walk when suffering from an Achilles’ tendon injury. He slipped into winning ways straight away, claiming victory in his first race and, thereafter, the scalps of all the leading race-walkers in Britain. A RACER TO THE CORE Thompson’s career continued for some forty years after his success in Rome. In 1975, fifteen years after his Rome victory, he moved to Hythe, where he worked as a teacher of mathematics at Southlands School and a gardener, known by his pupils, colleagues and clients alike to be exceptionally modest about his achievements. As his daughter, Helen Payne, recalls, “He never displayed the gold medal and it was rarely seen in public. When I was a child he used to keep it in the wardrobe!” But despite his unassuming nature, Don Thompson never hung up his trainers for good, even retaining his crack-ofdawn training runs into his retirement. Dave Denyer, who was a member of the Folkestone Running Club along with Thompson in the 1980s – when Thompson was in his 50s – recalls that, “Don was still regularly running marathons then. Indeed I went to one marathon in Windsor in his car. He regularly made himself ill during the runs, and I had to drive his car home with him vomiting into a plastic bag on the back seat. He always trained very early in the morning, around 4.30am summer and winter. He had a small loop around Saltwood, and would repeat this many times to make up a 15-mile run before going to work.”
“He broke his arm in one marathon and slept in his trainers because he couldn’t tie his laces.” Thompson’s commitment to, and enjoyment of, athletics was nothing short of exceptional. Helen Payne tells the story of one particular story that has gone down in family legend. “In one marathon, he fell over broke his arm. Not willing to be defeated, he finished the race. However, having a broken arm meant he couldn’t tie his own shoe laces. So that he didn’t have to wake my mum at 4am each morning to tie his laces before he went training, he slept in his trainers!” Even on family holidays, Thompson’s urge to compete was never far away. “When we were away on holiday he would often find races to enter. When we went to Florida one year he entered a race and drove himself there even though he hadn’t driven in America before!”. Don Thompson was a man who simply could not stop running. BRITAIN’S OLDEST EVER ATHLETICS INTERNATIONAL In 1991, he picked up another sporting accolate when he became Britain’s oldest ever athletics international, having been selected for a 200km race-walk in France. He finished the 120-mile race at the age of 58. By the time of his death from a brain aneurysm at the age of 73, he had completed 151 marathons and 151 half-marathons. Thompson never minded the lack of recognition he received, despite his status as one of the greatest British athletes of the 20th century. "I came in at the ground floor and I’ll leave in the basement," he said. "But at least I have been to the top of the tower." Don Thompson may have been diminutively built but actually, he was a true sporting giant.

Folkestone Rowing Club Hosts the Historic Viking Shield Regatta by Zoe Mond
The BBQ was fired up early on Sandgate beach on the morning of the 22nd April as rowing clubs from all over Kent, Sussex and Hampshire descended on Folkestone Rowing Club to compete in the Viking Shield Regatta, which dates back to 1925.
‘The shield itself is awarded to the fastest coastal pair in the Senior Men’s category in an annual event between Kent clubs. The winning club also has the honour of hosting the event the following year.’
This Regatta takes place each year before the start of CARA's (Coast Amateur Rowing Association) summer regatta programme. The shield itself is awarded to the fastest coastal pair in the Senior Men’s category in an annual event between Kent clubs. The winning club also has the honour of hosting the event the following year. In 2016 the crew of James Morgan and Jamie Leopard won the shield for Folkestone RC. HISTORY OF THE VIKING SHIELD The shield was originally presented to Olskov Hansen and Niels Ventegodt of the Viking Rowing Club in Denmark. These two Danish oarsmen rowed across the North Sea in an open Hope pair boat and were guests of the Kent Rowing Clubs in July 1925 while on their tour of European waters. As well as the Senior Men’s pair, there is a full programme of events at the regatta not restricted to Kent clubs, which rowers from Sussex and Hampshire may compete in. VIKING SHIELD 2017 WINNERS Jamie Leppard and James Morgan Senior pair, Jamie Leppard and James Morgan, won the Viking Shield for Folkestone RC for the second year running in a close race that saw Jamie and James cross the finish line as the first Kentish crew, giving Folkestone RC the honour of holding the historic regatta next year too. FOLKESTONE ROWING CLUB EST 1852 The rowing club is always looking for new members, whether you are an experienced rower, starting out or just like to find a new place to socialise. Rowing is a great way to keep in shape and even relax. It is worth visiting the club to meet the people and see the facilities. The best times are Sunday at 10am or week nights at 6pm. If you would like to have a go, bring items of clothing and footwear with you that you don't mind getting wet! There is no cost to visit the club or try rowing. The club competes in the Coast Amateur Rowing Association League, which takes place mainly across Kent and Sussex. The Club also has a good social membership. It has a full bar available for hire and hosts a wide variety of social events.
COME ALONG The next regatta at the club will be on the 9th July so pop along for a burger or some home-made cakes and see what is going on. Find us on Facebook or www.folkestonerowingclub.com

Player Awards
Cannons fall just short
At the time of writing the club had just held it’s awards evening for the 2016/17 season. The winners were as follows:
In our last edition we reported that the Cannons were sitting in 4th place in the league with a couple of games in hand over their nearest rivals. Prolific striker Alfie May had just been sold to promotion chasing division two side Doncaster Rovers but optimism was high that a play-off place would be secured. Sadly an indifferent set of results led to Hythe finishing 7th and therefore just missing out on a play-off spot. A disappointing end to what was otherwise another solid season from the Cannons.
Players Player – Sam Adams Manager’s Player – Craig Cloke Golden Boot – Alfie May Supporter’s player of the year – Jerald Aboagye Website Award – Dave Cook Chairman’s Award – Andy Short (Programme and Website Editor)
Sad News
The end of season sees the inevitable comings and goings. The biggest loss was Frankie Sawyer who joined Whitstable. Sawyer scored 30 goals in his 84 appearances for the Cannons and will be sorely missed. Another departure was Owen Price who left to go to Phoenix Sports not long after joining the club from Chatham. In terms of new signings Tom Loynes joins from Ramsgate, Alex Mulrooney-Skinner returns from a spell at East Grinstead and Chris Saunders rejoins from Chatham Town. The Cannons will no doubt look to strengthen their squad during the summer break.
Since our last update the club had a sad announcement to make as on Tuesday April 25th Dave Williams passed away at the Pilgrim’s Hospice after a short illness. Dave Williams was a player and a coach in the early days at Reachfields and he later managed the Reserves when Tony Walton took over joining up with and then moving on with Neil Cugley to Ashford Town and then Folkestone Invicta where he served for many years as Assistant Manager and Physio. Hythe’s pre-season friendly with Folkestone Invicta on 9th July will be the first of two games dedicated to Dave’s memory. The second will see Invicta take on a Millwall First XI on 11th July at 19:45pm at Invicta’s Fullicks stadium.

Saltwood CC Make Strong Start to the New Season Saltwood CC have made a good start to the season, winning their first two matches in Division 1A East of the Kent Regional League. Overseas player Ben Davis has settled in well, scoring 93 not out and taking 2 wickets against Margate CC on his club debut. Saltwood’s home grown players have fared just as well, with opening bowler Brice Dempster taking a career best 6 wickets for 42 runs, and Tom Carr, Ryan Hall and Jack Gooding all looking in good form with the bat. Saltwood’s junior section is as strong as ever with 81 members, all loving their cricket. The new All Stars Cricket programme started on the 22nd May with the aim of introducing 5-8 year old boys and girls to cricket. There’s still time to join in, just visit www.saltwoodcc.com/colts and sign up. Junior sessions are on Monday afternoons and cater for Year R to 2 and Year 3 upwards. All sessions are led by qualified and CRB checked coaches. The sessions are split by age group so that the coaching can be targeted at the type of cricket your child will be playing at school.

Solid Start For Hythe Green CC It has been a great start to the season for Hythe Green who have won their first two Kent Regional League games and also kicked off their Kent Village League campaign with a win over Littlebourne CC. Stand out performances so far coming from Cameron Emanuel-Burns with an unbeaten 105 and 3-28 against Littlebourne and Jack Fakley who hit 90 against Ealham Valley. A fantastic start for the Green who will be pushing for promotion in both leagues this year.

Community Spirit to Help
The school is incredibly lucky to have had sponsorship from several businesses including:
a Local School The Friends of Saltwood School May Ball is an annual charity event held to help raise money for Saltwood Church of England Primary School by Sophie Durrant This year the May Ball was held on Friday 12th May at Hayne House in Saltwood, and was an incredible success due to a huge number of businesses and individuals working together to help their local community. Through generous donations of raffle prizes and food for the evening, to sponsorship of individual courses, decorations and entertainment it allowed overheads to be kept to a minimum creating an amazing total of nearly £5000 made for the school. In 2016 the May Ball raised just over £900 in total, therefore it was a remarkable amount of money made this year that would not have been possible without the generosity of so many. Every school in the country currently faces tougher times with regards to government funding cuts, therefore with the money raised the school is able to make vast improvements to the playground, improving the quality of school life for every child that attends the school. The event also received food donations from several
businesses. Griggs of Hythe produced and donated several stunning platters of canapes. Tescos, Sainsburys, Bookers, Waitrose and Abel and Cole donated ingredients required to produce the food. Grandparents of a child that attends the school – Paul and Penny Hagger of Pauls Restaurant in Folkestone – prepared, cooked and served the food for the evening as a gift for the school which helped to keep the catering costs to a minimum. The raffle itself generated an exceptional amount too, many businesses gave generously to help produce a raffle that had four amazing prizes for each raffle winner. As well as the raffle, the evening also featured a fun game designed to get everyone on to the dance floor with a grand prize – A holiday for up to 10 people to a beautiful house with stunning views over Lake Annecy. The prize donated by Jennifer and Ronnie Elliot-Scott was the icing on the cake for the evening and helped to raise another £700 for the school. The evening was a brilliant success, but without the generosity and kindness of so many within the local community it would not have been achieved. We are lead to believe that community spirit has disappeared from society in recent years, but if we look to The Friends of Saltwood School May Ball 2017 as an example, community spirit is alive and very very well!

Hythe CC Looking Forward to a Successful 2017 Season by Nigel Pichowski
Hythe Cricket and Squash Club cricketers are looking forward to the new season with one eye on a disappointing 2016 and the other on new hopes for 2017 at The Grove. Hythe had a very mixed 2016 season on the field. The first team were relegated. The loss of Jamie Hemphrey, who took over 40 wickets the previous year and Sugit Nayak, the overseas player who scored 800 plus runs, proved insurmountable. Australian, Grayson Jones, scored 562 runs and stalwart, Tim Pichowski, scored 365 runs but few other batsmen showed the necessary application to build an innings on Hythe’s unique wicket. Several bowlers chipped in with good individual performance at the Grove but away lacked consistency in the basic components of bowling. This season was Andy Maurice’s last at the club and he should be respected for the commitment he has shown in sustaining a positive approach throughout the season. The second team’s new captain, Henry Large, had a very good season in producing a competitive team, every week, which travelled to seven London games. Chris Slee was the major run scorer with regular batsmen supporting him. The team finished mid-table and many players could well find themselves playing in the first team this time round. The Sunday XI won the East Kent League for the second consecutive year, only losing one game to Sandwich. Grayson Jones scoring a magnificent 208 not out, out of a total of 267, to beat strongest rivals Whitstable. Our Colts section played in the Saxon league at under 11, 13 and 15 level. Next year we will be running an under 11 side. New coaches are being trained, Colts’ day will be revived and the popular Sunday morning café is to be run again. Local schools will be involved in Kwik cricket days and the district Spartan side will play games at The Grove. It is hoped to play T20 matches against local secondary schools to enable
64 | www.hythelife.org.uk
promising youngsters to have a cricket scholarship to play at Hythe. There will be more coaching for children with disabilities and there are several girls currently playing Colts cricket. After 160 years of continuous use, the club has decided to replace the square. The aim is to have 12 new strips by 2020. This will involve obtaining grants and part funding by the club. This development is long overdue and will help us to recruit and retain players. Next year, to encourage new players, our subscriptions will be £65 per annum and match fees reduced to £8 per game. Lastly, the club is hoping to attract new players of all ages and abilities. Hythe has a long and proud history of being a welcoming and sociable club and thus, we look forward to the 2017 season with cautious optimism.
