Welcome TO THE SUMMER ANNIVERSARY EDITION Welcome to the Summer edition of the Hythe Life Magazine. Not only do we have a bumper issue for you but this issue also marks our first anniversary! It has been fantastic for our team to watch this publication grow over the last 12 months and we would like to thank you again for your support. The feedback we get from businesses and the community as a whole has been superb and we will continue to passionately champion local business and promote our community. With the arrival of Summer we welcome the many visitors who join us to enjoy the fantastic outdoor activities and scenery on offer in our beautiful seaside town. Whether it’s a leisurely stroll down our picturesque high street, a walk in the beautiful Brockhill Park or fun on the beach, there really is something for everyone of all ages to enjoy. We hope that our map found on the centre pages of the magazine will help our visitors make the most of their time in Hythe and also to remind the locals of how much there is to do in our wonderful town. It will be another busy Summer in Hythe this year. Highlights include the Armed Forces Day Parade in June, the War and Peace Show in July and the Venetian Fete in August. Check out our events page for all the details of these events and the many more that are taking place. In this issue we have some great features for you along with our regular favourites. We have not one, not two, but three recipes this issue from three fantastic local restaurants! We have the latest news from the Romney Hythe & Dymchurch Railway, details of this year’s spectacular Venetian Fete and a look at our local Mumtrepreneurs! In order to help the little ones stave off the boredom this summer holiday we are running an art completion on our kids pages. All they have to do is to draw their favourite zoo animal and send it to us for a chance for their picture to be published in the next issue of the magazine. We always welcome your feedback so let us know what you love about this issue and please also don’t forget to contact us if you have a story or news you think would be of interest to our growing readership of 25,000 people. As a social enterprise we take ALL submissions to editorial meetings for discussion and this is part of the community ethos of the magazine. Best wishes and have a great summer from all of us at Hythe Life.

Creating a Wildlife Haven by Emma Whyte
It's estimated that 60 percent of our animal and plant species have declined in the past 50 years for a range of reasons including loss of habitat. Many of our traditionally common animals such as toads, frogs, house sparrows, hedgehogs and starlings are becoming much less common. This is where gardeners can make a difference, by making their own gardens more wildlife friendly.
10 | www.hythelife.org.uk
You don't have to let your garden go wild - wildlife gardening needs maintaining too, but your efforts are rewarded with frequent visits from real-life creatures who actually want to be in your garden and nothing beats that! Finding pond skaters skidding across the surface of my newly built pond within 24 hours was such a thrill. Within the year there were frogs, dragonflies and damselflies choosing my pond to procreate. I noticed bees resting on the submerged pond weed, enjoying a well-earned drink. The water snail population exploded which kept the pond nice and clear. Within 2 years I found the first newt and I've watched the males flicking their tails at the females during mating rituals every year since. A wildlife garden is not something you can buy from a shop – it's something that develops if you give it the right conditions to do so and a pond is the best place to start.
Keeping fish in a pond affects the wildlife dramatically – fish like to eat frog and newt spawn, damselfly larvae and the like and having to keep a pump running filters out all the creatures at the bottom of the food chain - the ones you don't necessarily see, but whose presence is a linked to the health and abundance of other species that live in and around your garden. However, if you do have a fish pond and you'd also like to attract wildlife, you could consider digging out a wildlife pond somewhere else in the garden. A hole suitable for wildlife can be dug anywhere you fancy – mine is where a raised bed could be, behind a pile of sleepers which border the patio - with children this sort of raised pond is ideal as long as it cannot be fallen or climbed into. It has to be safety first when there are children around, but there are many ways to build a pond - even a bucket of water is useful for wildlife. A bit of greenery around the edges and sloping sides (or lots of large rocks in the bottom) makes it easier for wildlife to get in and out of a pond under cover. A healthy pond needs a bit of sun, but not too much or it can encourage algae to grow. Half fill it with native plants like Marsh Marigold and Yellow Irises and you're off! A pond is the ideal way to bump start a wildlife garden, but it isn't suitable for everyone. Hanging baskets, window boxes and a pile of logs can support a myriad of British species. Elsewhere in the wildlife garden, Buddleia, foxgloves (although again, best to avoid when there are young children around, as eating foxglove leaves is likely to be fatal), lavender, hellebore, honeysuckle, echinaceas and sunflowers are all great plants to grow. There is a wealth of information online about suitable plants - it's well worth a Google. The general rule though is to stick to native species which are perfectly suited to supporting... native species!
A pond is the ideal way to bump start a wildlife garden, but it isn't suitable for everyone. Hanging baskets, window boxes and a pile of logs can support a myriad of British species. It's easy to forget about the so-called "weeds" that are very beneficial for wildlife - bugle, clover, vetch, bramble and nettle (yes – sorry, even bramble & nettle) are incredibly beneficial. Nettles support over 40 species alone, including some of our most beautiful butterflies. Why not allow nettles to take over a small patch at the bottom of your garden? Think of the benefits it will bring. Overwintering insects and caterpillars use nettles and these are a great source of food for blue tits and ladybirds. A patio, balcony or courtyard may seem to be devoid of wildlife, but bees, butterflies, hoverflies and spiders all need to sunbathe to absorb energy from the sun and a concrete slab in a sunny spot is ideal. If you're lucky you might even see snakes and lizards if there is undergrowth for them to dart into nearby. Lights from windows attract insects which in turn attract bats. Pot plants are great for attracting insects and a garden full of insects is a healthy wildlife garden. Yes, I know they can be irritating when you're trying to enjoy a BBQ in July, but they are fascinating to watch if you give them half a chance – endless hours of entertainment! Territorial hoverflies seeing off anything that flies into their space & darting back to exactly the same spot, big fat bees moving from flower to flower with overflowing pollen baskets on their back legs, butterflies basking, damselflies flitting - the knowledge that you are helping ALL wildlife by supporting insects in your own back garden is incredibly satisfying and endlessly fascinating to observe.

50 Years on
and still with Saltwood at its heart by Brian Doorne
Above: Old Saltwood Lane Post Office c1895
This year Saltwood Village Society is 50 years old and since its formation in1965 it has seen many changes in the village. Gone are the butcher’s shop and the Fountain Stores. Gone is the delicatessen but, after several incarnations, in its stead we have a thriving local restaurant… so change can sometimes be a good thing! Originally Saltwood was a village with its own well, forge, pond and castle. Sadly only the castle now remains although the earthquake in 2007 did its best to try and put an end to that. Fortunately it failed although some serious damage was done. Over the past 50 years the society has been involved in a number of projects in the
village, the two most notable ones being the refurbishment of the fountain on the village green in the millennium year and, more recently, in partnership with Saltwood Parish Council, the refurbishment of the war memorial to include the names of the fallen in two world wars. To finance the work the Society raised in excess of £6,000 by holding

two garden safaris plus receiving donations from a generous public. We have also organized exhibitions, photographic competitions, quizzes etc. to raise money for various other causes in the village. The Society holds three meetings a year when we invite speakers who talk on a variety of subjects the most recent one being an illustrated talk by a committee member entitled ‘100 years of change in Saltwood’. Our meetings are well attended and are held in Saltwood C of E Primary School on the second Friday of February, May and October. Details of talks coming up can be found on our website: www.saltwoodvillagesociety.org along with more information about the origins of the Society plus contact details. The site also includes a selection of current and historic photographs. New members are always welcome or you can always come to a ‘one-off’ talk that interests you.

Place the wilted beetroot tops near the centre of the plate. Arrange the beetroot wedges around. Carefully break the salmon fillets into large chunks and place on top of the beetroot tops. Drizzle he watercress leaves with oil. Arrange on top of the dish as a garnish. Finish the dish by zesting a bit of orange on top. Serve warm. (We like to serve it with our homemade tartar sauce!)

INGREDIENTS 10 cups chopped spinach 1 head broccoli 100 gms green beans 1 ½ cups paneer, cut into 12 mm (½”) cubes 4 tbsp oil 3/4 cup finely chopped onions 4 cloves garlic, grated 25 mm (1") piece ginger, grated 2 green chillies, finely chopped
½ tsp fenugreek seeds
Saag Paneer Recipe by Saurabh Jain Chef/Patron Copper & Spices
Traditional Indian food can be a healthy choice with a balanced diet of starch (boiled rice, Roti), vegetables, Daal (lentils), yogurt etc. Indians take their food very seriously and take a lot of pride in their cooking. Cooking is considered an art and mothers usually begin to teach their daughters and pass down family recipes by show-and-tell, fairly young in life. Mealtimes are important occasions for family to get together. Most meals comprise several dishes ranging from staples like rice and breads to meat and vegetables and rounded off with a dessert. To the western world, India is perceived as largely vegetarian. This is not necessarily true. To a larger extent, religious beliefs (as compared to personal preference) dictate what a person can and cannot eat. For example, Islam forbids its followers from eating pork while a lot of Hindus do not eat beef. Followers of the Jain faith abstain from all meats and even avoid onions and garlic! As far as food is concerned, India can very roughly be divided into four (North, South, East & West) regions. Each region has several states in it and each state its own unique food. Through centuries India has been invaded by different cultures and each culture has left its mark on Indian cuisine. To truly understand Indian cuisine it can take a lot of patience and some amazing gastronomic food journey. Ever since I can remember I have always been fascinated & passionate about food. To me it was like magic how my mother would take vegetables, pulses, spices & herbs and turn them into mouth-watering dishes. I would often hide behind the kitchen door and watch her cooking. She did it with love, passion & expertise. She would make excellent dishes out of almost nothing and create dishes from leftovers and name it after us. It’s from my mother that I get the knowledge & passion about food. As Indians we love vegetarian dishes more so than non-vegetarian ones. Many of the best loved vegetarian dishes are the ones where paneer (Indian cheese) is combined with a vegetable. This combination of spinach and paneer is not only highly nutritious, but is a splendid blend of taste, texture and flavour.

Enthusiasm & Hard Work Make Magic Ingredients
by Danny Martin
The new enterprise adjacent to our famous canal in Hythe, the Light Railway Café, evolved from the previous business of a similar name but now owned and operated by the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway, is starting to pick up new customers and to offer a steadily evolving range of new meal options and activities. Our “Wi-Fi” is free as well. Already the outside seating area is in place every day and is particularly popular with those out walking their dogs or just stopping with their bicycles, after a genteel ride or a race- paced attack on the hills of West Hythe and the flat lands of Romney Marsh. However a separate entrance off the canal path will be re-opened in July with the hope of attracting more walkers and other visitors looking for a good pot of tea, a piping hot coffee and a cake or sandwich (or more). This enclosed and sheltered spot will also offer a small play area to keep the little ones occupied whilst their parents or grand-parents have a well-earned rest. Be sure though, when they hear the little train arriving just around
the corner there will be demands to go and see it. Back in the kitchen our reputation for good value breakfasts remains the mainstay of our catering business but our cooks are also dab hands at making their own cakes, scones and other favourites and these will be regularly on the menu in the days to come. Table service will be reintroduced in the new courtyard area. We also cater for small groups wishing to meet up and already our local cycle club come to see us on a regular basis. A craft-making class is starting up and the hall at the back of the site is in use for an art exhibition featuring local artists, including school children from St. Nicholas Primary School in New Romney.
Hopefully this will be the first of many. The long term use for the hall is being discussed with our supporter’s group, the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway Association who are considering how the history of our amazing railway can be told in a fun and interesting way as an attraction in its own right for the town. However more volunteers will be needed to make this project work so anyone interested is encouraged to get in touch with us (email: info@rhdr.org.uk). Whilst much thought is going into future developments, the Association is currently Continued on page 28…

organising a great exhibition for Sat/Sun 26/7th September to celebrate the 90th birthday of our two oldest locomotives “Green Goddess” and “Northern Chief” that were built in Paxmans works, Colchester. The Hythe exhibition hall will play a key part in this too. There are also opportunities to use it as a local cinematography venue and to start this off we shall be showing a very old archive film of the railway owned by Count Louis Zborowski, one of the co-founders of the railway, on the late afternoon/early evening of Saturday 6th June. It was intended originally as an evening for members of our Association
peak days to reduce the pressure on parking that exists in Hythe in general, hopefully making things a little easier on our neighbours in local streets. We continue to encourage visitors to come to the railway and to our beautiful town, with its great High Street, by public transport. Talking to others in the town we realised that a number of them had not appreciated how many improvements there have been in this regard in recent months. High Speed services from London St Pancras International, at least hourly offer a journey time to Folkestone of less than one hour, the fastest scheduled
‘Our true ambition to make the world’s smallest public railway the “best main line in miniature, in the world” remains in the forefront of all we do.’ and railway shareholders but we would love others to also enjoy the event (cost £5). Bookings can be made at the Light Railway Café or the adjacent station. Outside, our volunteers have been hard at work clearing the site, cutting the hedges, and new plant boxes now adorn the front of the café building. Hanging baskets will follow as we join in as part of “Hythe in Bloom”. To the rear of the building the car park has been cleared and is now used on the railways

service for that distance in the United Kingdom. Just around the corner from Folkestone Central station is the bus top for the No 16 Stagecoach Gold Bus. This now connects Canterbury and Hythe Light Railway station, calling at Folkestone Central, at least every 30 minutes and the buses are new, well equipped and even have free Wi-Fi. Couple that with bus services on the “Wave Route” 100/1/2 linking directly through from Hastings and Dover and Hythe Light Railway station has become one of the best connected locations in the district. Even better news is that the main boarding point to return to Folkestone is right outside our station and café too. Linkage to other local attractions continues to be part of our philosophy of helping each other in the local tourism world and we are delighted that as a result the Hythe Information Centre which we have run for many years will be re-launched, with new local signage, more display boards for local events and business promotion, including the
excellent town map. There will be short stay parking for those using it and of course access to our own local very knowledgeable staff. We are grateful for the efforts everyone involved has gone to in order to make this happen. We already stock details of local walks but will look to expand that and make the café a starting and end point for such local walking events and tours. If you have ideas to help this along we are always happy to work in partnership. May be a cycle hire centre will follow. Our next objective is to work with Hythe Boat Hire to see a better inter-connection between the electric boat, the rowing boats and the railway too. All of this may sound like we have forgotten that running the railway is the prime purpose of our business but our true ambition to make from the world’s smallest public railway, the “best main line in miniature in the world” remains in the forefront of all we do. So please take a ride on the trains again this summer, see what we have improved, hear about what more we intend to do in the future and admire the marvel of the steam engines that haul the trains. They now, despite being well over 80 years old, haul trains with twice the human capacity of the opening day in 1927, at scale speeds approaching 70 mph (23 mph in real terms) over the longest 15inch gauge railway in the world. They are maintained, cleaned and handled by the most dedicated of people. Come and chat to them. They are the most enthusiastic bunch of railway professionals that you will come across anywhere, be they the driver, the engineer, the station master or one of the other myriad of individuals that make a railway do its job well. We can assure you of a warm welcome Visit www.rhdr.org.uk for timetable and fares information, to read about our products, services and up-coming special events, including our famous Santa Specials which will go on sale in June!

It’s countdown to splash-down for
Hythe’s unique aquatic carnival by Ken Crowe
First held in 1860 and now staged every two years, the Hythe Venetian Fete is one of south east England’s most popular outdoor shows and attracts spectators from far and wide. This year’s aquatic extravaganza will be staged on Wednesday, August 19. Preparations are under way to make it the best yet. With processions of floating tableaus, plenty of live music and family fun entertainment, a grand firework display, a touch of pageantry, a cast of hundreds and an audience of thousands, Hythe’s spectacular Venetian Fete is unique. Taking place on a half-mile stretch of the Royal Military Canal and providing more than five hours of lively entertainment for spectators of all ages, there is nothing quite like it anywhere. Gates open at 4pm and there’ll be plenty going on between then and until the main programme starts at 6.45, says the not-for-profit Hythe Venetian Fete Society which organises the event. Then, the first of two water-borne processions of decorated floats, each with a humorous, historic or topical theme, will take place. It will be led by a ceremonial barge carrying the mayors of the Confederation of Cinque Ports in full regalia. Four popular bands, each leading a group of floats, will take part.
After an interval for spectators to enjoy refreshments, a funfair, canal-side activities and a spectacular firework display, the second procession will start at 8.50, when floats will be illuminated and thousands of lights will twinkle from trees along the processional route. The Fete Society has also organised free band concerts on the canal bank on August 15, 16, 17 and 18. With the event now at countdown stage, preparations are going to plan and tickets are selling well, according to the latest Venetian Fete news release. But a greater amount of advance funding would be welcome, says John Schoner, who this year celebrates 27 years as chairman of the organising committee. “The Venetian Fete costs £130,000 to produce. While most of the money comes from ticket sales, the event relies heavily on the support of its main sponsors - the Roger De Haan Charitable Trust, Smiths Medical (Portex),
Hythe Town Council, Waitrose, Hythe Imperial Hotel, Universal Fireworks, Gopak, Lawrence & Co, Dungeness ‘B’ and Holiday Extras. “Without their help and that of the sponsors of prizes and the five pre-fete band concerts – plus the hours of time given by the people who design and make the floats and by the hundreds of volunteers whose work makes Fete Day go with a swing - the Venetian Fete would not be possible. “Now, it’s fingers crossed that the weather will be kind”.

Summer Approaches
Summer approaches and with that thoughts of holidays are never far away. Nowadays it is common for many of us to take our pets (especially dogs) with us. Hythe is conveniently close to Europe making it easy to travel abroad via Eurotunnel or ferry. The recent rapid increase in movement of animals around the country and abroad brings a number of health issues. Firstly we may be exposing our pets to diseases and pests that are not usually present in their local environment but secondly those diseases and pests are frequently being brought back home. Some of these problems have become established in parts of the UK which were previously free of such diseases.
over heathland or moorland then effective preventative treatment is essential. A vaccine is now available to protect your dog against Lyme’s Disease. Lungworm is becoming widespread especially in the Southern and Western counties and is spread primarily by foxes, infecting slugs and snails which dogs eat and then become infected. It is a potentially life threatening infection. Prevention is by use of effective regular wormers.
TRAVEL WITHIN THE UK The main problems our pets are presented with in the UK are exposure to parasites. Ticks are the most serious as these can carry other diseases such as Lyme’s Disease, which can also affect people. If you are taking your dog on holiday in the UK and especially if it is a walking holiday
TRAVEL ABROAD Travel to Europe with our pets is now a very simple process with over 200,000 pets travelling abroad each year. The principle requirement is for a valid Pet Passport with the completion of a rabies vaccination and microchip identification. There is a delay of 21 days from vaccination before pets can travel. Return to the UK requires a certified treatment against tapeworms (Echinococcus) between 1 and 5 days prior to embarkation to return to the UK. Foreign travel now exposes our pets to
a multitude of other threats. Ticks are again a major problem as there are several more species widely found in Europe which can carry a variety of diseases not regularly encountered at home. These are spread from the bite of the tick to infect our pets. They include Lyme’s Disease which affects over 40,000 people in Europe each year, Babesiosis and Ehrlichiosis. Other important diseases encountered especially in the Southern Mediterranean regions are Heartworm which is spread by mosquitoes and Leishmaniasis which is spread by sandflies. At Barrowhill Veterinary Centre in Hythe we have over 30 years of experience advising clients on holiday travel with their pets either within the UK or to Europe and occasionally further afield. We have a wide variety of preventative treatments to protect our pets to suit their specific needs aswell as vaccinations for Rabies, Lyme’s Disease and Leishmaniasis. Please give us a ring if you feel we can assist you with any plans to travel with your pets.

The Challenges of Having a Picture Framed by Bev Saunders: Edge (Bespoke Picture Framing)
All you need to do is mention the words “picture frame”, to see some artists eyes glaze over. Framing has long been the bane of their lives, it is labour intensive and often viewed as expensive, and these costs can challenge artists when pricing their work. As a consequence some artists have moved away from framing, and contemporary work is being presented as gallery-wrapped canvases. However, some artwork simply needs to be framed. A frame created using the right moulding and the right finish can add real elegance to a piece, and many buyers of traditional art simply won’t buy work that isn’t beautifully framed. FINDING THE RIGHT FRAME You might find a piece of work and fall in love with it. Where you can, buy it unframed and enjoy taking the time with your picture framer to choose the right moulding, design and presentation. If however the piece is already
framed, but not to your taste, ask if you might buy it without the frame, find out how much the current frame is worth and negotiate this as a discount, an allowance towards a frame that suits you. This happens all the time particularly during the sale of larger works. After all everyone has different taste, the perfect frame for one might not work for you. HOW MUCH TO SPEND ON A FRAME This is major consideration. Costs can vary widely depending on the size of the piece and quality of materials used. Understandably, many artists struggle with making a big investment in a frame, but this can jeopardise a presentation. Although beautiful framing will help to sell a piece of work it can be difficult for artists to pay for framing particularly as there are no guarantees a piece will sell. The higher the framing cost, the lower the artist’s profit margin. However, many successful artists consider framing to be an investment and are
able to raise their work to a higher level as a result. So as the owner of a piece of work you can do the same, a beautiful frame carefully designed and constructed specifically for your artwork will increase its value and raise it aesthetically. WHERE TO FIND A GREAT FRAMER Finding the right framer can be a challenge, but find someone you get on well with, someone who has a creative eye and offers great service. But more importantly, find someone who listens to you and involves you in the process. Your framer should be interested in you, get to know you, your likes, dislikes, budget etc. because you will be working closely together. In many ways, you will become partners in your project.

Amazing facts about Sharks Sharks have been swimming in our oceans for around 450 million years which is about 200 million years before the first dinosaurs arrived. Humans have been around for just 200 thousand years. For every human killed by a shark, around 2 million sharks are killed by Humans. The Great White Shark, The Tiger Shark, The Shorfin Mako, The Oceanic Whitetip and the Bull Shark are thought to be the most dangerous to Humans. Around two thirds of shark attacks occur in less than 6 feet of water and the vast majority of victims are men. However shark encounters are incredibly rare. Most sharks are harmless and humans have more chance of being struck by lightening or killed by a firework than a surprise face to face meeting with a shark. There have 40 | www.hythelife.org.uk
only been two unprovoked shark attacks in English waters since 1847. Sharks do not have bones in their bodies. Instead they have cartilage which is the same type of tissue that makes up our noses and ears. Great white sharks have an amazing sense of smell and can detect seals from two miles away. A species called the Lantern shark can glow to disguise themselves in the deep ocean. The velvet belly lantern sharks also have glowing spines that may be used to ward off predators in the dark. Most sharks become still when they are flipped over on their back. Killer whales have been known to do this to kill Great White Sharks - they keep the shark flipped over until it stops breathing. Sharks are regarded as one of the most important animals in our oceans as they help control other species of fish and therefore the whole oceanic ecosystem.

Instep Dance by India Pearson
Instep Dance Company in Hythe is one of 14 projects to be long-listed in its category to win a National Lottery Award from a total of over 600 entrants.
Last year Hythe based Instep Dance Company proudly announced they had successfully secured £14,600 from Arts Council England’s ‘Grants for the Arts’ to contribute to funding a new and exciting intergenerational dance project in the local community. Since then the company have been hard at work rehearsing for the premier in July that will include dancers and musicians from the age of 8 to 67. They cross all ages, genders and come from a diverse socio economic background. Commissions include work from dance artists
Lila Dance and Katie Green Following their application to be considered for an award Instep is thrilled to have heard that they are through to the next stage of the process for receiving a National Lottery Award . They, alongside another 13 projects will be considered for the final by a judging panel at the end of May. If the company makes it through to the final 6, there will be a five-week public vote between 24 June and 29 July. In March this year Instep was selected to host a visit from Olympic gymnast and Strictly
Come Dancing star Louis Smith (The London 2012 silver and bronze medallist) who has been supported by National Lottery funding himself and wanted to see the difference funding makes to local communities such as Instep. He launched the awards on BBC South East and on Morning TV – The Lorraine show, in March mentioning his visit to Instep. His role is to encourage projects, such as Instep, to make an application for an award and in so doing demonstrate the width and breadth of the work supported by National Lottery Funding LOTTERY FUNDING Jackie Mortimer, Creative Director at Instep Dance Company, said: “We wouldn’t have been able to run our project without Lottery funding and we are honored to have been picked out to help support this year’s National Lottery Awards.” The National Lottery Awards are the annual celebrations of the UK’s favourite Lottery funded projects. The awards are open to any organisation which has received National Lottery funding. Instep have enjoyed Lottery funding for the last three years and by July 2015 they will have created 7 new works, employed over 20 artists and involved over 200 young dancers in these projects. Every year the projects are accompanied by workshops and performances which extend Instep’s ability to reach out to new participants and audience members.

The Sandgate Hill Lift
by Roger Wood
Above: Route of the lift from the Leas to Sandgate Hill
CLIFF LIFTS IN FOLKESTONE The first of three cliff lifts in Folkestone was the Leas Lift which opened in 1885 and is the only one still in operation. Hoping to emulate its success, the Sandgate Hill Lift Company was established in 1890 to promote the building of a lift running from the west end of The Leas down to the east end of Sandgate High Street to connect with the horse-drawn tramway to Hythe which was then nearing completion. This would provide a transport link for the well-to-do residents of the fine houses and hotels which were rapidly spreading west along The Leas. WORKINGS AND DESIGN All three were water-balance lifts comprising two cars running on steel rails connected by a steel cable running round a large wheel at the top station. Large tanks under the car floors were filled with water at the top station to make the upper car heavier than the lower and, when the lower station was reached, the water was discharged. Various braking systems were installed to both control the movement of the lift cars and prevent accidents in the event of mechanical failure. The first lift had used the public water supply, draining the used water to the sea. However, the supply proved inadequate on the busiest days so, in 1890, pumps driven by engines running on town gas were installed to return the water from the bottom station to the top. Pumps were used on the Sandgate Hill lift from the start. The Sandgate Hill lift differed from the others in that it was not so steep. Indeed, the Company referred to it as a water balance tramway and, whereas the other lifts were controlled from the top station, each of the cars on this lift had a conductor on a platform at the downhill end who controlled the brakes. The tracks were built to a gauge of 5ft 6in and the gradient of the line was 1 in 4¾ except in its middle section as it crossed a farm track (which became Radnor Cliff Crescent) on a
44 | www.hythelife.org.uk
bridge where it was relaxed to 1 in 7. Rollers in the middle of the track guided the cable. CONSTRUCTION AND OPERATION Building ran through the hot summer of 1892 with materials brought in by the tramway. A church temperance group became so concerned that the navvies were frequenting the ale houses of Sandgate that they provided a barrow with a soft drink called Stocco free of charge. The lift opened on 20th February 1893 and carried 500 passengers on its first day. On August Bank Holiday Monday, over 3,000 rode on it. It was profitable for the first ten years of operation but competition from motor buses, which were better suited than their horsedrawn predecessors to deal with Sandgate Hill, started to take the traffic from the lift and the tramway thereafter. Military personnel were the main users during the Great War as Folkestone and Sandgate became garrison towns. Manpower for repairs was in short supply and service was suspended in July 1918 with the lift and its finances in a sorry state. It did not reopen and was sold for scrap for £650 in 1924.
The abutments of the bridge over Radnor Cliff Crescent will be there for many years as they were built of concrete with a Kent ragstone facing. The abutment on the downhill side of the street is next to Wells House, a nursing home which was built for H G Wells as Spade House in 1901.
Above: The bridge abutment adjacent to Wells House, former home of H G Wells Below: The uphill bridge abutment on Radnor Cliff Crescent
WHAT REMAINS? At the end of The Leas, the house called Sandgate Point stands on the site of the upper station and is reputed to have a cellar formed from its water tank. The lower station on Sandgate Hill remains in a much-extended form as a block of flats, Croft House: the original brick frontage can still be seen together with the start of the incline where it cuts into the hillside.
FOLKESTONE’S CLIFF LIFTS Much of the information in this article comes from “Folkestone’s Cliff Lifts” by Brian Hart (Millgate Publishing Company 1985). Further information based on Brian’s work can be found at: www.disused-stations.org.uk/features/sandgate_hill_lift/index.shtml

Glaucoma Awareness Week by Chris Snow (David Snow Opticians, Hythe)
Glaucoma is known as the Thief of sight. This year's National Glaucoma Awareness Week will take place on the 8 – 14 June 2015. NOT EVERYONE IS AT RISK OF GLAUCOMA BUT THERE ARE CERTAIN RISK FACTORS AND THESE INCLUDE: • People over the age of 40 • People of African or Caribbean origin • Anyone with high eye pressure • Anyone with a family history of glaucoma • Diabetics • Long-term steroid users • Anyone who is very short sighted
The increased risk caused by family history is only 25% which doesn't automatically mean that Glaucoma is certain but it is sensible to be checked and in fact anyone over the age of forty is entitled to a free NHS sight test with a family history. However, as mentioned earlier half of the sufferers are unaware that they are affected so checkups are still sensible and are universally free to anyone over 60. The bottom line is, if you dont know for certain your eyes are perfect, have a sight test at least every two years!
BUTTERFLY IMAGES
The purpose of the week is to encourage people to have regular eye health checks to ensure that they are safe. It is only with regular eye health checks through a local optometrist that people will know if they have been affected as there is no pain involved in the most common form of the disease. It is estimated that 67 million individuals worldwide have glaucoma more than 50% of individuals with glaucoma are undiagnosed! This means that out of the estimated 500,000 individuals in the UK that are affected, half are unaware of it. Glaucoma is a complex set of conditions or disease but the most common type is Primary open angle Glaucoma with thinning of the nerve fibre layer leading to loss of peripheral vision in the early days, and potentially leading to tunnel vision.
46 | www.hythelife.org.uk
Whilst Glaucoma may not actually be caused by a build up of pressure in the eye, it is the only modifiable factor and one of the reason the pressure or “Puff” test is important. However, the pressure test is only part of the story; imagine asking your garage to check your tyres and the tyre pressure was checked but the tread wasn’t examined and there is in fact a bald patch or worse. It is therefore important to examine the Optic Nerve as well. Digital photographs are very helpful in viewing and comparing photos over time which might show up subtle changes. However, there are even better methods worth looking out for, which can do an in depth 3D examination layer by layer of the retina, and even give predictions on the likelihood of contracting the disease.

RNLI Charity Postcards
by James Marsh
I was recently invited by fellow artist Paddy Hamilton of Dungeness Open Studios, to make some postcards, to help raise funds for the worthy RNLI charity.
So, I created a range of images that I felt reflected Dungeness and the local coastal area simultaneously; 9 of which I chose for the first print run. Dungeness attracts a lot of visitors, who should welcome postcard reminders of their visit; If this idea proves successful, I’ll create another range to follow on. Subsequently, I’m offering signed limited edition prints, for anyone preferring larger versions; There's only 10 to each edition though. Details can be found in the Fine-Art section of my website: www.jamesmarsh.com

Hythe Sports Welcome to the Summer 2015 edition of Hythe Life Sports. The days are warmer (most of the time!) and longer and it is the perfect time to get involved with local sport. In this issue we have our last update for the Hythe Town FC Cannons of the 2014-2015 season, show you a way in which you can help raise funds for the club and also have a look at what other sports and activities are available for you to enjoy in Hythe this summer.
The gentle thwack of leather on willow… The Cricket season is well underway and our three teams have all been in action. We will provide a full report on how their seasons have gone in our Autumn issue. As reported in our last issue, Saltwood CC have a brand new square to play on. Time will tell whether this will have a positive effect on results, however the Wood’s new overseas player Jake Goodwin has found it to his liking hitting consecutive centuries in his first two games. The young Australian has swapped the sandy beaches of Queensland for the pebble beaches of Shepway and the Wood hope he will have a big impact at the club. Early signs are more than encouraging. Jake will split his time between Saltwood and Hythe CC. Hythe Green CC will again be ground sharing with Saltwood and will also look to benefit from the new wicket at the Wood. Although relegated from Division 1A East of the Kent Regional League last season, The Green will hope to bounce straight back up. Former IPL star Sujit Nayak returns for Hythe this season. Nayak finished the 2014 season as the Kent League Division 3’s top scorer and his runs helped Hythe secure promotion. Hythe hope he will be in the runs again as they push for back to back promotions. Like Saltwood, Hythe have also made some improvements to their ground over the winter. Thanks to funding received from The Roger De Haan Charitable Trust the club were able to install two artificial cricket nets to replace previously condemned concrete nets. The nets will support more than 80 young cricketers at the club.

Summer fun If Cricket is not your thing then there are plenty of sports for you to try this summer. If you fancy yourself as the next Wimbledon Champion then Hythe is the place to be. The town is exceptionally blessed with tennis facilities with public courts on South Road and two tennis clubs, Hythe Lawn Tennis Club and Hayne Barn. The South Road courts which are accessed via Ladies Walk are available from June to September and cost £2.57 for adults per hour per person and £1.00 for Juniors per hour per person*. For further details call Hythe Town Council on (01303) 266152. For details of how to join Hythe Lawn Tennis Club go to their website www.hythetennis.com or by ringing Jim Gore (Membership Secretary) on 01303 259461. To book a court or a coaching session at Hayne Barn contact the club on 01303 265 552 or email them at info@haynebarnindoortennis.co.uk. Full details can be found on the club’s website www.haynebarnindoortennis.co.uk. If you fancy yourself as a bit of a Robin Hood or Katniss Everdeen why not try Archery this summer. Castle Moat and Folkestone Bowmen is one of Kent's oldest archery clubs, with members ranging from 10 to 90 years old. Formed in 1951, they first met to shoot at Saltwood Castle. Today, they are based in the grounds of the Folkestone School For Girls but they still shoot on occasion at their former home. The club runs beginners courses over the Summer and are always on the lookout for new members. For further details check out their website: www.castlemoatandfolkestonebowmen.co.uk. If you are more of an aquatic persuasion you could always give sailing a go. Hythe and Saltwood Sailing Club are offering a range of sailing dinghy training courses suitable to all levels from beginner to those looking to improve their skills. Full details can be found on the club’s website: www.hssc.net. As you can see there are plenty of options available this summer to either take up a new sport, improve your skills or rediscover an old hobby! *All prices correct when going to press but may be subject to change. Solid finish for the cannons As you can see from the results below despite 7 defeats in the last 11 games of the season, 3 wins and a draw were enough to ensure that Hythe finished a solid 16th out of 24 in the Ryman League South for the 2014/2015 season. Whilst Hythe missed out on the playoffs their final position is a great achievement considering that this season was very much a rebuilding exercise following the mass management and player exodus over the Summer of 2014. Credit therefore must go to Tim Dixon who has rebuilt the team and added stability and a good foundation for the future. The fact that Dixon was able to re-sign key players that left in the Summer is an indication of the respect and esteem with which he is held in local football. Whilst it was shame that Folkestone Invicta managed to do the double over Hythe this season, it was only by the odd goal which is a far cry from the 8-0 thumping at home of a few years ago. With Invicta missing out for the second year in a row in the league playoff final, the 2015/2016 will see the local rivals go head to head again for local bragging rights. Hopefully the Summer of 2015 will not be a repeat of last year and the Cannons will make some further signings and push on towards the playoffs next season.

Your club needs you! The clever people at the Cannons have come up with a ingenious way for supporters to help raise funds for the club without even getting out of their armchairs and without any further outlay other than their usual admission to a game, programme or pint. Most of the time if a non-league football club requests help from its followers, it is normally going to be in the form of their time or money but this is something different. The club is asking all of its 'online' supporters to follow three easy steps, that take minutes, cost nothing, yet will raise much needed funds for the club:
1 Go to www.easyfundraising.org.uk/causes/hythetownfc and simply register your name and e-mail address and create a password. As a result, whenever you shop online, from your weekly shopping to a dream holiday or anything and everything in-between, if the retailer is one of the 3000 who form part of the scheme, then Hythe Town FC will receive a small donation from the business you have used, via the 'easyfundraising' scheme. Although the amounts will not be huge, over time they will soon add up. The scheme includes the likes of Sainsbury’s, Amazon, Argos, John Lewis, Waitrose, Marks & Spencers, Tesco Direct, Travelodge, Sportsdirect, Boots, Currys and thousands more. 2 Go to www.easyfundraising.org.uk/raise-more/donation-reminder and install the ‘Donation Reminder‘ on your computer and/or smartphone. At this point you no longer have to remember to do anything regarding the scheme as it's all automated. If you go to a participating business' website to consider and/or make a purchase, your web browser will do the rest. It 'knows' that you are registered with Hythe Town FC, and if you make a purchase on the website in question, it will do all the rest for you. You simply get a reminder flashing up, so you can agree to donating to Hythe Town FC. 3 Swap your usual search engine (e.g. Google) to 'easysearch'. Every time you search the web using www.hythetownfc.easysearch.org.uk instead of your usual search engine, you'll raise half a penny for Hythe Town FC. Search just 10 times a day and you can raise around £25 a year. Whilst this doesn’t sound like a huge amount if 100 supporters did this it would raise £2,500 for the club. The Club is urging as many of its supporters as possible to sign up to the scheme and start raising funds for the club.
