Thoughts on Painting En Plein Air - Paint Out

I am beginning this new series of features by talking to you about painting En Plein Air and how I create paintings on my native Romney Marshes. The words roughly translated mean painting in the open air - taking your easel and paints outside with you, setting up and painting what you see before you. Sadly, in a day and age where we are always so busy and many hobby painters enjoy the comforts of home when it comes to making art, open countryside and green fields, or wonderful seascapes are so easily overlooked. It does not need to be this way. A change of mindset, and a different approach to the way you work is all that is really needed in order to take the first step. By painting out of the home studio you embrace the immediacy of the moment, no longer confined to working from captured images from your camera. You begin to see light and form in a new way, not to mention enjoying some clean refreshing air. To begin with and like all new things, the

thought of how do I start, will be daunting but you know, why not just take a sketch book and pencils out on walks with you, jot and make little colour notes alongside your drawings, also date them. It’s always great to look back, not only to see your development, but also to recount your journeys in this precious record and visual account of those walks. The sketches you make do not need to be elaborate studies, merely marks that capture the feeling of the moment and best describe the view you chose to record. Paints can come later, indeed if you have the confidence and some more essential equipment like a portable easel, then enjoy the expressive nature that painting can afford you. I started painting en plein air some 30 years ago without realising what it was called back then. In recording landscapes as reference for

my African wildlife paintings I was setting the foundations for the future. These days En Plein Air painting has become a major part of my weekly work as a fine artist. At least twice a week I am out at 8am until the dark prevents me painting anymore. I concentrate my efforts in the main from Rye to Folkestone, with my beloved Romney Marshes and its coastline forming the core. It is my home and my muse, though I have not always thought of it as such. For the last 12 years it has been the subject matter that moves me the most (apart from wildlife images of course). If you live locally, and I guess if you are reading this you probably do, then the wealth of subjects to go and paint are almost endless. Indeed paint them once, then revisit and record them many times. It’s always a different image. I will describe some of the kit needed in my next article, but for now I just want to make you think hard about your hobby of painting. I go out with a small group of like-minded artists every three weeks. We meet up and paint together for the day, before going our separate ways. We even have a name for our ragtag group, ‘Marsh Lookers’. If travelling or painting outside alone worries you, then find others and go out together. Even two is fun and you’ll be surprised how confident a painting buddy will make you feel about setting up and going for it. Moreover, painting en plein air will develop your drawing skills as you are looking at real things not two-dimensional photographs. You start to see perspective, and understand tone (value). You no longer rely on colour generated by a machine – which is often flawed. You see colour accurately and so much more. FINAL THOUGHT Please be kind if you see a chap on the verge or in a field, on a beach somewhere, in the depths of winter, huddled against the winds painting, don’t pity him as he is having fun! He is doing what he loves the most, making art, and It might well be me. More thoughts next time around.

The Hythe Institute 1892-1968

Many people wandering down Prospect Road near Grove House may have noticed a memorial stone commemorating ‘The Original Foundation Stone of The Hythe Institute demolished in 1968 for road widening’. It follows that only those who are in their mid-50s or above will remember the Institute building itself. Not even its greatest supporter could claim that it was a beautiful construction, but nonetheless it did for its 70 year plus existence provide a meeting place for Hythe residents. Older readers may well recollect attending meetings, lectures and a myriad of social events. It has never been satisfactorily replaced and with apologies to the late Canon Newman and his hall in Dental Street, it could probably be argued that Hythe has lacked any adequate meeting place since its demolition. The original foundation stone was laid on 2nd November 1891 by one Alfred Bull J.P and the building followed just to the west of where Grove House currently stands. Bull’s intention, high minded and worthy and redolent of late Victorian optimism was “to provide a place for the working classes to meet”. Alfred Bull was himself a draper and had previously been the Treasurer of the Hythe Soup Kitchen and was active in good work. He donated his house on the corner of Mount Street and Prospect Road and endowed it and the income from other properties to be used as a club and entertainment centre for people who would not or could not join the established circles such as the Cinque Ports Club. The subscription was four shillings per annum and there was to be no gambling and no entry for dogs. By the 1920s, the annual subscription remained at four shillings, but anyone could use the reading room at the cost of one penny (that is to say a pre-decimalisation penny).

Dickie’s, formerly Trice and Morphy of Rampart Road, Hythe. THE CHARITY COMMISSIONERS The question became what was to be done with the money paid as compensation. The answer was that the funds that arose had to be used for charitable purposes and were passed out to a charity to be called the Hythe Institute Fund. This was set up under an order made by the Charity Commissioners dated 9th September

“Every November, those of us who are left attend a memorial service at Westminster Abbey to remember our lost colleagues, although sadly there are only a handful of us now.” The Institute building was demolished as a result of the upgrading and straightening of the A259 as it meandered its way through Hythe. Some will remember that the main road westwards went through the gap between the Nelson’s Head Public House (now the Southern Spice Restaurant) and the Methodist Church. This is currently used as the site for the Saturday market. The new road also spelt the end for the much fabled transport café,

1975 and was to be administered by local Trustees. Amongst the early Trustees were Hythe dignitaries such as Ron Sharp, Jack Newman, Tom Miller and Robert Spicer and very shortly afterwards followed by Richard Trice (one of the owners of the aforementioned Dickie’s) and Barry Dowle. Richard Trice remains sitting as a Trustee to this day some 40 years on and Barry Dowle only retired from the Trust within the last year or so.

The Trustees meet three times a year and consider applications for funding from local organisations including schools, scouts and guide groups, sports clubs and the Trustees of local halls and facilities who may require funds for maintenance or improvements. The recipients must be Hythe or Saltwood based or at least serve people from these communities. Over the years, much thought has been given as to whether the funds that are held and administered might be better put towards the creation of a new community hall or centre, but plans for a new centre have never in the past 40 years proceeded very far. In the absence of any large project, the Trustees try to benefit as many groups as they can, always bearing in mind the source of the funds that they deal with and the place that the Institute building itself occupied in Hythe life.

Message from the Mayor

One of Hythe’s treasures – and one of our biggest local employers – is the famous Romney Hythe and Dymchurch railway. Many residents will have taken a trip from the Hythe terminus to the beautiful and eerie landscape at Dungeness and back, or maybe stopped off on the way to see our neighbours at Dymchurch. This Summer, a new station at Dungeness was opened by legendary frontman for The Who, Roger Daltrey. A keen railway fanatic, Daltry has been visiting the railway for over 60 years, and seemed to be very pleased to open the new station. The organisers also invited local dignitaries, including Hythe town mayor Michael Lyons, seen here on the right.

What a beautiful summer it has been! Living here in Hythe gives us the opportunity to experience the best of a glorious English summer with picnics on the Green, gently rowing a boat along the canal or swimming in the sea. It all seemed so peaceful. Now the reality of winter has set in. Yet things can never be the same. As the great Greek philosopher Heraclitus of Ephesus said ‘All is flux’ – by which he meant change is normal and central to the universe – even in our community here in Hythe. However much we might want the world to stop, we have to accept that things will Michael Lyons change over the years, decades and centuries. At the time of writing, Hythe Town Council is generating its response to Shepway District Council’s ‘Places and Policies Local Plan – Preferred Options’. Councillors are well aware of the controversy and fervent opinions that the 444 page consultation has generated, and in submitting Hythe Town Council’s official response, have tried to stay positive. Just saying no to any development, anywhere, any time will not help the town’s future. Whatever you think of the proposals for building in parts of Hythe, the Shepway council officers have produced a competent and interesting document with some thought provoking policies. I hope you took the opportunity to talk to the council officers at the exhibition in Hythe Town Hall on 11 October, or submitted your thoughts to Shepway’s online portal. While your Hythe Town Councillors have also given a view, every individual has a right to be heard. There are plenty of cynics who claim that no-one ever listens to them. Some of them seem to choose only to voice their opinions on Facebook or Streetlife. They don’t attend meetings with councillors or council officers, and don’t respond through official portals. If these cynics only use social media and only say what they think is wrong without proposing what could be done right, they will find their prophecy fulfilled – they will not be heard by officials or councillors. As a passionate believer in representative local democracy, I would ask you to please – don’t be a sceptic. Speak to your councillors if you have a logical alternative to a council proposal. And if you think you could do better, why not stand as a councillor yourself in 2019?

Super sunny season of summer concerts Wasn’t it a glorious summer? Not only did we have some spectacularly good weather for almost all of July and August, but we also managed to put on a full programme of free concerts every Sunday afternoon in Oaklands. There were many amazing afternoons. People were line dancing, free dancing and singing . AgeUK sold numerous cups of tea, and did very well for their charity. The safety staff ensured that the chairs were set out and ready in time, and the bands often did not even take a break, because they could see how much people were enjoying themselves. While the concerts are provided free of charge by the council to residents, there were also many visitors from out of the area who came specifically for the concerts, and spent money in the town. The concerts help to make Hythe a town to be proud of. Council officers are already scouting for a variety of acts for the 2017 season. Dementia friendly community You might know that Hythe Town Council is trying hard to make Hythe a dementia friendly town. Council officers recently attended an information session to become ‘dementia friends’. While the session only took an hour or so, it proved useful in understanding more about what it's like to live with dementia. The session concluded with a request for the attendees to turn the understanding into action by commiting to just one thing. There are practical advantages for staff to attend these sessions to. If you work for a service oriented organisation the dementia friends session could provide extra skills for dealing with all members of the public, not just people with dementia.

Hythe Watch News from Hythe Town Council Seventh Edition

Take your pick Local council organisation sometimes looks confusing, but it essentially comes down to two groups of people: • Elected councillors who make decisions in council including electing the town mayor • Appointed ‘officers’ (professional staff) whose job is to implement the decisions that council makes, and to keep the activities of the council going. Ironically, there are so many us trying to keep things simple for our different organisations that it is starting to look rather complicated. Here’s our cut-out-and-keep guide to important in our part of Kent: 105 – Power Launched on 6th September this year, dialling this number will put you through to UK power networks – the company that manages the cables that deliver electricity into homes and businesses in Hythe. 105 is a free service and customers can call no matter who they choose to buy electricity from. Highways pilot Hythe Town Council and our local Kent County Councillor, Martin Whybrow, have been conducting a survey of late to hear from residents about their issues related to road safety on and around Stade Street and St Leonard's Road. This is part of a county-wide pilot to foster improved joint working between town/parish councils and the county council. This part of Hythe was selected due to the number of problems that had previously been raised by residents with elected members. Thank you to everyone who responded. We had 133 replies, which shows the high level of interest in this topic. The replies were invariably detailed, in terms of both the perceived issues and suggested remedial action. The number one issue that was raised was parking. This was cited in 77 replies. Next was excessive speeding, cited in 51 replies (clearly, some responses covered more than one topic). Related to both of these were 18 replies that raised the problems of exiting from side roads onto both Stade Street and St Leonard's Road. Other topics that showed some consensus were around cycling (the need for better facilities, signage and demarcation); excessive HGV traffic; road surfaces (Albert Road particularly featured here but, since the survey was conducted, KCC has filled in the pot holes here so hopefully this has been addressed); and the poor state of pavements, particularly in Stade Street. A specific issue was also raised by a few people about poor signage for Lynton Road, so that too many cars go down here not realising it is not a through road, cannot then turn round, and then risk damaging residents' cars as they try to reverse. There were plenty of suggested solutions, with the most common ones being some form of residents parking; a 20 mph zone; and some form of reworking of the parking and traffic flows by Oaklands surgery. The next step will be to meet with KCC Highways officers to present the findings of the survey and to gain their advice on what measures can be practically implemented to address them. There will then be the challenge of funding these and, of course, ahead of any schemes, there will be full statutory consultations. Martin Whybrow said: "I always felt that the offer to be a county-wide pilot was one that would benefit Hythe and I would like to thank all of the residents who have taken part, so too my counterparts on Hythe Town Council for their hard work and input to date. However, the real test of this pilot will now be to see what can be done to address the issues and I hope that we can now move forward together to design and deliver tangible schemes that will address the clearly highlighted issues in this part of the town." Hythe Town Councillor Ann Mayne added: "It has been fascinating to analyse the responses, some of which have included lengthy suggested remedies, sometimes with photos or drawings! We have gained a clear message from local residents that they are concerned about road safety and that something needs to be done. We will, of course, continue to keep residents informed as we now move forward with the next stages of this work."

What Hythe Town Councillor’s Corner Council is aiming for Shirley Moberley Every organisation needs objectives, and Hythe Town Council is no different. At a recent council meeting, it decided on three long term objectives: 1. Achieve the Local Council Award Scheme (‘quality status’) This will demonstrate that councillors want to make a real and positive difference to. The scheme offers councils the opportunity to show that they meet standards. It will show where processes are robust and where there is room for improvement. 2. General power of competence Power will enable the council to do anything an individual can do provided it is not prohibited by other legislation. It could enable the council to extend its services into areas including (possibly) where Kent County Council or Shepway District Council have had to reduce provision. 3. Neighbourhood plan While we don’t expect to start on this project until after the next town council elections, it will be a great opportunity to build on the work that was started a few years ago, and on the quality foundations of the Award Scheme and the General power of competence. Astute readers will notice that we have not mentioned roads, schools, healthcare, refuse collection and many other aspects of local government. Hythe Town Council prepare for possible future devolution and localisation. Achieving the Award Scheme and the General power of competence will enable the council to influence the way that local services are organised in future. It might seem that this is all backroom, administrative stuff but it’s actually the foundation for the future prosperity of the town.

I moved permanently to Hythe just over three years ago with my partner John when we had the opportunity to retire early. We bought our bungalow in 2010 and had been renovating it in preparation for our retirement. We both love living in Hythe and cannot think of a better place. I love being part of the community. I have enjoyed films at the Community Cinema and going for meals in local restaurants and cafes, as well as attending Hythe Venetian Fete, Hythe Festival and lots of other events on offer. Canvassing was a great way to discover, meet local people and gain their views and insights into where we live. It was a great surprise and privilege to be elected as a Hythe Town Councillor for East Ward in May 2015. Being a Councillor involves many different hats. The variety of issues is unceasing, whether it is reporting faulty toilets, rubbish picking or dealing with enquiries. It is most rewarding to help resolve these with the support of the Hythe Town Council team. I sit on various committees including Plans and Works, Planning User Group, Personnel Sub Committee, Bandstand Co coordinator to name a few. The Hythe Twinning Association has welcomed me into their fold. The committee work very hard to continue the links with our twin towns of Berck-sur-Mer and Poperinge, and I attended Armistice Day on 11 November in Berck-sur-Mer as part of the Remembrance commemorations. As a trustee for Hospitals of St Bartholomew and St John and Tynwald Residential Home, I attend their meetings whenever possible, go to fundraising events and help with administration. The bandstand concerts at Oaklands have been a particular passion. This summer has seen a variety of performers, which we hope will long continue. The opening of Age UK Oakland’s café on Sundays has helped add to the ambiance. They serve a nice cuppa and homemade cake and I have met many residents who faithfully support and enjoy these summer events. Promoting Hythe as a tourist destination is important to me. Our Cinque Port heritage is fascinating and as I travel around the various towns I note how we are connected by our shared history. I often help visitors with directions or a potted history. Hythe is working towards becoming a Dementia Friendly community and this gives the opportunity to work with different groups in the town. Councillor Shirley Moberley

Hythe took to the stage at the world’s largest flower show in the summer. Local garden designers, Ferguson & Whyte, designed a giant sculptural wave which the public were invited to immerse themselves in. This was surrounded by a garden with natural planting based on Dungeness. Displaying at the flower show was a great achievement after a lengthy selection process. The garden was judged by the strict RHS judging criteria and gained a RHS Silver-Gilt medal. “Being a part of the show was a fantastic experience and winning a Silver-Gilt medal for our first show garden is something we are all incredibly proud of,” said Mark Whyte Designer. ‘Our Lives in Time’s Hands’ show garden was in the conceptual arena at the flower show. Gardens in this range push the boundaries of design and allow the visitors time to think about the subject matter. The Ferguson and

Whyte garden was based on one of Shakespeares Sonnets (Sonnet 60) which deals with the passing of time, and as Shakespeare commented: ‘although you cannot stop time you can harness time to leave a message for future generations’. Visitors entering the garden were invited to leave their own messages. The giant wave was constructed over six months and was made from around 700 individual pieces of steam bent Ash wood.

The steaming process gave the wood the ability to bend dramatically and beautifully demonstrated the crest of a wave. “Working with plants from our coastline really opened our eyes to the colourful delights on offer says Mark. Hythe to Dungeness coastline has a wealth of summer flowering plants that thrive in the harsh conditions the coast delivers. The garden displayed at Hampton Court was full of colour and great textural plants. All of these are found wild growing on our beaches. If you are thinking of adding a coastal theme to your garden it is worth bearing in mind some plants that will give you months of colour. Inset above are some favourites to look out for.

Tea

A Tradition Revisited The British penchant for tea is a national institution, but in a world now dominated by big coffee chains and increasingly complex coffee concoctions our devotion to the humble cuppa is seemingly in decline.

Or is it? There has been unprecedented growth in ‘speciality’ tea over the last decade, but what does ‘speciality’ actually mean? A hundred years ago there was nothing particularly special about loose, whole leaf tea. In many ways we are in fact going back to basics! THE MARKET PLACE Despite the UK Tea Council reporting that 165 million cups of tea are drunk each day in the UK, consumer analysts Mintel reported last year that sales of ‘bog-standard’ black teabags had fallen by more than six percent over the past five years.

However, their report highlighted that sales of speciality tea – ‘loose-leaf, more premium tea’ – are on the up. This growth encompasses not only ‘proper tea’ but also herbal and fruit infusions as consumers seek out something a little more fulfilling than a dusty black tea bag. DUST Tea was not always the dusty tea bag fare that adorns the majority of kitchen cupboards today. Indeed, it was the invention of the tea bag itself, in 1920s America, that gave rise to a need for smaller tea particles which led to the creation of the CTC (cut, tear, curl) machine. The CTC process creates both substantial granules of tea and very dusty particles for teabags that quickly ensure rich colour and strong flavour. This production method institutionalised the

British taste for strong, less complex black tea to which milk is added and tea plantations were soon developed in East Africa (where they are not affected by seasonality) to match the demand for this type of tea. A TRADITION REVISITED What we are seeing today is in part a return to traditional, more complex flavours with an emphasis on whole leaf tea from Asia. All ‘proper’ tea (i.e. not fruit or herbal infusions) comes from one variety of plant, the 'Camellia Sinensis'. The tea plant first grew in the Himalayan corridor and continues to

flourish there. This is unsurprising given the environmental conditions needed for its two key variations to thrive. The Chinese have been drinking tea for around 5000 years and far from the British being the first Europeans to bring tea to our continent from Asia, it was in fact the Portuguese and the Dutch in 1610! It was then exported to England by these nations with the first reference to tea being sold in London in 1658. Tea really took off in the UK with the marriage of King Charles II to Portuguese princess, and tea-obsessed Catherine of Braganza in the 1660s and it was not until 1669 that the East India Company started to order tea directly from China. It was during the worsening of relations with China in the 1830s, due to the ongoing opium

trade, that the East India Company decided to try and grow tea in India themselves. The first shipment of British grown black Assam tea was sold in the London auctions in January 1839. BETTER TEA The increased demand for better tea over the last decade has been driven by a number of factors. These include more health conscious consumers, wider product choice and more interesting flavours, improved manufacture, distribution and retail networks, and tea’s ability to offer a simple, relatively low cost pleasure. US medical research has promoted the health-enhancing properties of tea, especially green tea, oolong tea and some herbal infusions. All teas contain high levels of varying antioxidants and an amino acid called L-Theanine which is thought to have the potential ability to reduce mental and physical stress, improve cognition and boost mood in harmony with caffeine. Green tea, particularly when grown in shaded conditions, as is often the case in Japan, has particularly high levels of this amino acid. A bit like wine, the different properties and flavours of the final tea product are determined by the various regions in which tea is grown and the way in which it is processed – from plucking to drying. Indeed, it is the processing that ultimately leads to the various classifications of tea; black, green, oolong and white. Improved manufacture and distribution has enabled access to more interesting flavours once again. Moreover, the addition of fruit, herbs and spices to tea – which Indians have been practicing since tea was first cultivated in India by the British in the form of Chai – or just on their own as herbal and fruit infusions, also adds a new dimension of flavour to our simple enjoyment of a cuppa.

METHOD

Mix 220g of icing sugar with about 5 tablespoons of water, may need more or less than this, but just add water until the consistency of the mixture is right – you don’t want it too lumpy or too runny. Spread the mixture on to your biscuits using the back of a spoon. Leave to set for about 20 minutes. While it is setting, you can decorate your marshmallows – these will be the faces of your snowmen. Then place your marshmallow heads on to your setting mixture. Once the icing has dried and set, you can then use the writing icing to decorate your snowmen. You may wish to add some sticks of chocolate to use for their arms.

Get involved Hythe Stars and Stripes needs you Do you have a passion for football? Do you want to see the rise of the next David Beckham or Fara Williams? Hythe Stars and Stripes FC is always looking for new coaches, men and women, to support and help make our young players the stars they could one day be.

The club is proud to have a fantastic group of volunteer coaches who give up their free time for the benefit of the local community. You don’t need any coaching experiencing to take on either current or new teams for the club – just a love of football! Head Coach, Mike Chamberlain says: “We have coaches that played years of rugby, tennis and golf, then they had a child and they love football so they’ve taken on the challenge. All the experience comes with each training session you take on. There are so many learning curves for the coach as well as the players as we develop new techniques and think of new ways to improve our sessions. It’s great fun and a rewarding thing to be a part of.” The club provides FA recognised training awards, as well as first aid and safeguarding

training at no cost to the coach. DBS checks are also paid for by the club. But it doesn’t stop there. Mike says: “Each coach can develop as much or as little as they like. So if you fancy further training it can always be made available.” Coaches are asked to commit to two years’ service in return for the training and kit provided – you get a club shirt and coat free of charge too. One of the most important things to remember with coaching is it needs to be fun! “All football should be fun and the first six years are non-competitive so there’s no race to score all the goals. Each player develops at a different age – for the young ones, working as a team will help strengthen every player.” Martyn Lofting is the Under 10’s coach and plans on seeing his team through all the way to

Under 18’s. He got involved four years ago when his son was playing at Palmarsh, trained by lads from the Under 18’s side. He said: “Because of popularity and numbers, the club decided to set up an Under 7’s team and were looking for a volunteer to run it – someone came up and lifted my hand up for me and it all went on from there! I got put through the various training and DBS checks. There were a couple of managers who were really supportive, helping me out.” Martyn has loved seeing his players progress. “It’s been brilliant. It’s great to see how they all develop as players from being in the Under 7’s. They get the concept of football, sportsmanship, fitness and what’s expected of them.” Glyn Goff is the Under 15’s coach, but he’s been coaching and managing football teams for 30 years in all, running adult teams as well as youngsters. He says: “Locally, I got into coaching when my son was playing first for Folkestone Invicta then for Hythe Stars and Stripes Under 18’s. I then had a year off and was cajoled back into coaching again when my step son played at Under 7’s for Stars and Stripes – I’ve been with them ever since.” Glyn enjoys seeing his team grow into young adults, having a purpose and learning how to play the game. He says; “I enjoy the fun aspect and seeing the lads come off the pitch with a smile on their faces. It’s very satisfying to see the shy ones coming out of their shells. They all come from different backgrounds, but somehow the football brings them all together and they have mutual respect. Success is only a tiny part of what we aim to achieve. The boys don’t realise that yet, but they will.” He continues: “It is pleasing now to see some of the old Stars and Stripes players, now 25, coming up shaking my hand, talking about the old games, the fun, the silly antics and see that they have grown into fine young men.”

Hythe Life Sports Welcome to the Winter edition of Hythe Life Sports. In this issue, we have a look at how Hythe Town FC are faring so far this season, we have a slightly unseasonal final cricket update and we have some useful hints and tips for runners on how to keep safe when training this winter.

Fantastic start for the Cannons The Cannons have made an excellent start to the season and at the time of writing sit third in the Ryman League Division One South table, two points behind the top two with a game in hand. There have been some further comings and goings at the club. The stand out signing has been that of striker Jay May from Maidstone United. This is very much a high profile signing for the club and a sign of intent from manager Clive Cook. May has been Maidstone’s leading scorer for the last two seasons and it is hoped he will form a lethal strike force with namesake and prolific striker Alfie May. However, Alfie May has been the subject of interest for other clubs following his fantastic performances last season and his prolific start to this with 15 goals already. He has already had a trial with League Two Stevenage

The Cannons have also signed midfielder Travis Jackson from Whitstable and ex-Folkestone Invicta striker Richard Atkins from Tunbridge Wells. The club also bid farewell to Sam Welch who has left to join Sittingbourne.

SCC End of Season Awards sponsored by Hythe Life The hotly contested the Tea of the Year award finally went to Ryan Hall whose culinary efforts won him a bottle of Chapel Down Vintage Reserve. Special mention however must go to Owen Reed and his partner Kirsty Paine who produced the truly magnificent Saltwood CC cake (pictured left). Hythe Green CC had an excellent first season in the Kent Village League. They finished fourth, agonisingly just short of promotion by one point. The Saturday side also finished a respectable fourth in Division 1B East of the Kent Regional League. Hythe CC are having a mixed season. The 1st XI were unfortunately relegated from Division 2 of the Kent Cricket League after finishing second to bottom. The 2nd XI however fared rather better in Division 3 (2nd XI) of the Kent League finishing mid-table. Hopefully the 1st XI can bounce straight back up next season.

RUNNING

Every year in late autumn many people in the town receive the news that they have secured a place in the London or Brighton Marathon. Whilst the races are held in the Spring, training programmes start in earnest in December/early January. Likewise many of us take up running to try and work off the excesses of Christmas. The arrival of winter, especially with the clocks going back on the last Sunday in October, can be bad news for runners, beginners and experts alike. The cold, wet weather not only dampens your enthusiasm but also your feet! Running in the dark becomes unavoidable if you work from 9-5 so whether you’re heading out early or late, follow these easy tips to stay safe this winter. BE SEEN! Wearing bright fluorescent colours is a great idea during the day but at night white kit with reflective panels shows up better in vehicles’ headlights. Winter kit often features reflective areas, and many running shoes come with reflective panels on the heels and sides. You can also customise any kit that you already have with adhesive strips and shapes. Reflective strips attract the most attention when you attach them to the parts of your body that have the greatest range of movement, such as feet, lower legs and arms. There are also a range of reflective bands and clothing that come with flashing LED lights in them that not only light you up like a Christmas tree, but also ensure you are seen from distance. TRAFFIC Always face the on-coming traffic when you’re running on a road with no pavement. The only exception to this rule is if you’re approaching a blind corner, when you should cross to the opposite side of the road, then cross back again as soon as it’s safe. This applies at any time of day but especially at night when drivers may not expect to see a pedestrian, let alone a runner. Wearing a head torch will ensure drivers see you long before they reach you, as well as helping you to pick out the safest route if the ground is uneven.

BALANCE When you run in the dark your sense of balance shifts due to a loss of peripheral vision. It’s therefore important to train your body to adjust to running at night rather than expecting it to cope automatically. Instead of choosing a route based on scenery, try to find a well-lit run with an even surface to avoid falls or strain injuries. RUN WITH FRIENDS Running with friends at night in winter has two major advantages: 1) it gets you out of the door when you might prefer to stay on the sofa, and 2) it ensures you’re safer than if you were pounding the pavements alone.

Schedule one evening run a week with a friend or group of friends. Keep the run short and close to home to start with, then when you’re more confident head further afield. If no friends are available, most running clubs also organise at least one evening run a week that you can join in with. SAFETY FIRST No matter how careful you are when you run at night, be prepared for unforeseen events. Always tell someone where you’re planning to run and roughly when you’ll return. Take a mobile phone and stick to well-lit, busy routes.
