Haunted Hythe

By Jane Connolly

Halloween is on its way once again – so lock the doors, huddle closer to the fire and prepare to be spooked as Jane Connolly takes another look at Hythe's murky and mysterious past... The nights are drawing in and the autumnal chill will soon be settling on the Kent landscape, bringing with it the unsettling feeling that we might not be alone on this earthly plane. If a thousand years of superstition is any guide, on October 31 the door between this world and the next will be left open just a crack – letting in unquiet spirits who will stalk our streets and rattle about in our attics when we're trying to sleep. If you live in Hythe, your chances of being goosed by a ghoul appear to be greatly enhanced and it doesn't even need to be Halloween, according to the area's frightful folklore. Last year we took a good look at Saltwood, which is something of a Spook Central in these parts and it is to this, not the village that we return first this time. Ghosts are not the only unnatural beings to hang about in Saltwood, it seems – in 1963, a story emerged that received international attention and even merited an article in the Flying Saucer Review. A FAN OF THE SUPERNATURAL As a fan of the supernatural, I'm not terribly interested in UFOs or cryptozoology, but this is such an extraordinary story it's hard not to be intrigued. On November 16, 1963, four teenagers were walking along Sandling Road (a popular stretch for phantoms) when they saw a strange glowing orb in the sky above the woods. As they watched, the weird sphere slowly dropped out of sight behind the trees and they became convinced that they had witnessed the descent of an alien craft. Their excitement turned to pure terror moments later when something inexplicable emerged from nearby undergrowth. Later, the witnesses swore they had been approached by a shambling, humanoid figure about 5ft tall, which sported webbed feet, huge bat-like wings and a missing head. Whether this alarming 'creature' had emerged from the supposed UFO, or had just happened to be passing at the time, we shall never know, as the teenagers understandably legged it without pausing to ask questions. Once the story came out in the press, it attracted comparisons to America's famous Mothman legend; but as Saltwood's monster never made another public appearance, the ‘Bat Beast of Kent’, as it had been optimistically christened, faded out of the limelight. One sceptic suggested the teenagers had simply seen a normal crow illuminated by electric flashes from the nearby railway line outlandish as the witnesses' tale was, this scarcely seems a satisfactory explanation...

A MISSION OF MURDER Back to ghosts now and we turn our gaze to Saltwood Castle. Of all the colourful characters who must have graced its grounds over the centuries, there are four who have left a particularly dastardly imprint behind. On December 29, 1170, William de Tracy, Hugh de Morville, Reginald Fitz Urze and Richard le Breton left their host's home to embark on the final leg of their trip to Canterbury, where they intended to send “troublesome priest” Thomas Becket to meet his maker. As we know, they were successful, but it seems that the supernatural world bears a grudge: if you venture up to the lane outside the castle on any December 29, it is rumoured that you will hear the assassins' horses clattering by as they once again set out on a mission of murder. Finally, we have a story from central Hythe and it's a real rarity in the spook-spotting

world – a firsthand report from a personal friend. One Tuesday afternoon last autumn, in broad daylight, our witness was making his way down Church Hill towards the High Street. As he strolled along, he spotted a hooded figure standing at a grave on the far side of St Leonard's churchyard. The idea struck him that it might be a monk, but he then passed a large bush by the church wall and lost sight of the figure for a moment. In the second or two it took for our witness's view to clear again, the hooded apparition had completely disappeared, with no obvious means of escape... I can personally vouch for the witness being neither a drunk, nor a lunatic (at least, not on Tuesdays) but where did the figure go? And was he ever really there at all? Until next Halloween, don't have nightmares...

What’s in a Name? ‘Cylinder’

©Romary (CC BY-SA 3.0)

by Barry C Sansom

Like me, you may have often wondered about local place names and how they originated – and what’s more, having delved into local history, found the answer to be surprisingly obvious. It usually follows in the same way that many families have taken their names from their occupations: Baker, Carter, Smith, and so on, that it is often a similar case with place names. In fact, it is said that Saltwood takes its name from the heavily wooded area, together with the use of salt pans for drying sea salt. But what about more obscure names like, ‘Cylinder’, as in that given to a timber-clad house that now sits among modern buildings in Freshfield Lane, as well as Cylinder Cottages and Cylinder Terrace, both situated off Cylinder Road? As a lifelong villager I have heard all sorts of theories put forward over the years, from the manufacture of First World War ammunition, to boring-out early car engine blocks, but none ever made any real sense. However, during some research for an article on Archdeacon James Croft and the American garden that he created, I accidentally stumbled upon what I believe to be the real origin of the name, ‘Cylinder’. In 1812, Archdeacon Croft became the 56th rector of Saltwood, having the benefit of 14 livings. From these he derived an annual income of around £5,000.00, which was a considerable sum in those days. Being a wealthy man he spent a great deal of money restoring Saltwood church, and as he was also a very keen gardener, in 1854, he hired an expert by the name of William Acomb, to help him create what has become the American garden that we know today. That is a story in its own right, but an interesting offshoot comes from the necessary

8 | www.hythelife.org.uk

clearance of the land. The American garden is situated on the site previously known as the Saltwood alders, a boggy piece of land taking its name from the proliferation of alder trees growing there. Obviously, these had to be cleared to make way for the ambitious planting programme that was to follow, and ground-works are expensive. However, the archdeacon had an eye for business, and he was also aware that alder is particularly suitable for turning into charcoal, which in turn is used in the manufacture of gunpowder. Fortunately, charcoal burning was a part of village life in Saltwood during the middle of the nineteenth century, and the

allowed too much air otherwise all that is left at the end of the process is a pile of ash. Greater efficiency brought higher profits, so it is easy to see the attraction of more modern methods. CYLINDER HOUSE During this period, the Saltwood charcoal burners were operating on land that is now Freshfield Lane. Cylinder House, the timberclad building that remains there today, takes its name from the metal cylinders that once stood on the site, and in which the timber from the Saltwood alder trees would have been burnt. Cylinder was eventually adopted as a name for the whole site, and as they were built, also for

‘Cylinder House, the timber-clad building that remains there today, takes its name from the metal cylinders that once stood on the site.’ archdeacon found there to be a ready market for his timber. Charcoal burners are often itinerants, able to move to wherever the raw materials are easily accessed. In very basic terms, their means of burning those raw materials would often amount to little more than building a stack of timber, setting it alight, and then covering it over with earth to control the burn. But with the advance of technology, metal kilns, or ‘cylinders’ with circular lids, had become very popular. These cylinders often came in two halves which made loading and unloading so much more efficient, as well as allowing a far greater control over the way the timber was burnt. It is vital that the burn is not

the road and the houses either side. Archdeacon Croft lived in Saltwood Rectory (now Saltwood House), and during his time there he could often be seen walking the footpath across Isobel field, over what has now become the disused Hythe branch railway line, and on towards to his American garden. Locals called this well-trodden route ‘Croft’s walk’, which, in spite of a modern corruption into ‘cross-walks’, is a name that survives to this day. Archdeacon Croft died at Saltwood Rectory in 1869, at the age of 85. He is buried in Saltwood churchyard in a vault he constructed himself, and situated just inside the lych-gate. He lies with his wife, Charlotte and his daughters: Cecilia, Fanny and Annabella.

Autumn Gardening ©British Tourist Authority

by Mark Whyte

Summer is behind us and the garden is being greeted with what we hope will be a calm autumn. Being on the coast our plants can suffer in autumn gales with the salty air being taken quite far inland, so tie up any vulnerable plants or shrubs.

These and many more will keep your garden beds looking stunning as the days shorten. Autumn is a time to look forward to the next growing season and start planting and dividing for the next spring. Spring flowering bulbs can all be planted between September and November. There are many varieties of each, giving you a show at different times during spring so it is worth thinking about this when planting. We tend to plant in large clumps which produce a much more striking display. For example, tulips look great in clumps of ten or more. Dividing herbaceous perennials will give you extra plants for the new season at no cost. Simply cut through the relevant plant (hosta is a good perennial for this) with a spade and split in two, sometimes you may get four depending on the plant size.

YOUR CHECKLIST OF JOBS THIS AUTUMN: 1 Collect and sow any seeds from perennials 2 Be ready for leaf fall and keep the lawn free of leaves as this will damage the grass

Many people feel that the garden is finishing up this season with not much on offer in the way of interest, but autumn and winter can bring much more visual beauty to the garden than you may think. There are the obvious favourites such as pansies, violas and other winter bedding, but shrubs like cornus (dogwood) can produce the most striking, colourful stems which last through to the following spring.

Below is a list of other plants to look out for that will give your garden interest at this time of year: • Hellebores • Camellias • Chrysanthemums • Michaelmas Daisies • Sedum (several varieties) • Japanese Anemones

3 Autumn is a good time to carry out turfing if required 4 Cut back shrubs and other overgrown plants 5 Net over ponds to protect from leaves. 6 Later in the season give hedges a final cut before winter

Mulberry Flooring Carpets – Rugs – Vinyl – Laminate - Wood Floors – Karndean

For those not already in the know, Mulberry Flooring is situated at the East end of the High Street (Waitrose end), offering a full supply and fitting service and free advice on all aspects of flooring. They have an impressive selection of carpet samples in every colour and type to choose from. The window display is enticing and on entering the shop, the nice open layout makes it easy to walk round and view all that is on offer. The staff are knowledgeable and friendly and nothing seems too much trouble. I had wondered whether an ‘upmarket’ shop in a small town would prove to be more expensive. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the general cost of fitting and the price of carpets, vinyl, Karndean, Amtico and the Engineered Wood ranges were all very competitive, and in comparison with stores such as John Lewis, Lenley’s and Fenwicks, invariably less expensive for the same or similar products. The quality of service and fitting is high, as you would expect from a shop that relies on recommendation and repeat business. Mulberry Flooring also stock a wonderful range of rugs and mats, in addition to a catalogue ordering service. In particular I liked the HugRug eco-friendly barrier mats, which are a bit different and available in some lovely designs and colours. They have some very unusual and beautiful rugs available in wool, silk, sisal, cotton and heavy heat set polypropylene. Richly coloured Kelims and hand-made Indian rugs, together with some stunning hand knotted Persian pieces. They are also suppliers of the RugGuru a rather fabulous contemporary range of wool rugs. Again I found the prices to be very reasonable, starting from around £30.00 for a small rug and £5.00 for a door mat. Absolutely well worth a look in every respect, before you trundle out of town to shop.

Call a chimney sweep not a firefighter! by Kent Fire and Rescue Services

As the days get shorter and colder it can be comforting to curl up in front of a warm, cosy, crackling fire. But, before you light yours for the first time this year, it’s vital you make sure it’s in good working order and fit for the winter or you could be putting your family and home at risk.

Between 2010 and 2014, Kent Fire and Rescue Service tackled almost 1,350 chimney fires in Kent and Medway. One of the main causes is not having your chimney swept regularly. Dirty chimneys can cause fires which damage structures, destroy homes and injure or kill people. We know how busy life gets and that it’s all too easy to forget the important things in life. Sign up to Kent Fire and Rescue Service’s Clean Sweep Alert and you can rely on them

to send you a friendly reminder to get your chimney swept and inspected as well as useful tips to keep you and your loved ones safe. Details of the service can be found on their website: www.kent.fire-uk.org/news/campaigns/clean-sweep-alert If you use an open fire, wood or log burning stove, Aga or other ‘real flame’ appliance in your home, follow Kent Fire and Rescue’s top tips and keep your family and home safe:

‘If you use an open fire, wood or log burning stove, Aga or other ‘real flame’ appliance in your home, follow Kent Fire and Rescue’s top tips and keep your family and home safe.’

DIRTY CHIMNEYS CAUSE FIRES – KEEP IT SWEPT • Have your chimney and flue inspected, swept and maintained by a professional registered chimney sweep at least once a year for coal and twice if you are burning logs • A clean chimney can help prevent fires and structural damage to your property • Regular cleaning of your chimney or flue will eliminate the build up of soot and clear obstructions such as loose bricks, bird or animal nests, leaves and debris • Avoid overloading the grate or building fires too high • Dispose of ash safely and appropriately.

Continued on page 20…

www.hythelife.org.uk | 19

THINGS YOU CAN DO: • Get your chimney/flue cleaned and inspected over the summer to ensure it’s free from debris and in good working order for when the weather cools down • Stand outside your property and have a good look at your chimney • Check for moss or grass growing out of your chimney – it’s a sign it needs repair and if you had a chimney fire, could lead to smoke spread in your property • Does your chimney lean to one side? Or is the top of it missing? Some damage may not be noticeable because it is located inside the chimney. However, that damage could allow a chimney fire to spread into the roof or other parts of your home • If there are missing or cracked mortar joints or bricks, this is a sign your chimney needs repair. Look out for crumbling mortar falling onto your fireplace or stove • Only burn suitable fuels and don’t overload the grate • Always use a fire guard and if you have pets or young children consider using a safety guard • Make sure that the fire is out before going to bed at night or leaving the house • Do not dry or air clothes on a fireguard or close to the fire • Regularly check for smoke from defective brickwork in the loft when the fire is alight and avoid storing items too close to the chimney stack

20 | www.hythelife.org.uk

• Make sure no sparks or fumes can escape through cracks or broken bricks • Never interrupt the air supply by blocking air vents or air bricks • Avoid too much clutter being stored in your loft as this will make it much easier for a chimney fire to spread • Have working smoke alarms fitted on every floor of your home and test them regularly.

HOW WILL YOU KNOW IF YOU HAVE A CHIMNEY FIRE?

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO IF YOU THINK YOUR CHIMNEY IS ON FIRE: If you think your chimney may be on fire call the fire service on 999 1 Leave the room, close the door and make sure everyone in in the property knows there is a fire 2 If it’s a log burner or stove, close the vents and flue dampers, if possible, to restrict the oxygen feeding the fire

1 A roaring sound that grows louder as the fire’s intensity increases

3 Get outside through the quickest and easiest escape route

2 Loud cracking, popping or a low rumbling noise coming from your chimney

4 Stay out until the fire and rescue service arrive

3 Embers falling back into the hearth

5 If you can’t get out of the building, stay low to the ground and near a window. Calling out for help will let firefighters know where you are.

4 Black smoke, sparks and flames seen coming from the top of the chimney 5 In severe chimney fires, flames can extend several feet above a chimney 6 The walls of the chimney breast or adjacent walls becoming hot to touch

Hythe Watch News from Hythe Town Council Second Edition

New Mayor Councillor Michael Lyons was elected by his fellow Councillors at the Annual Council meeting. He now holds the Speakership of the Cinque Ports, he is the Mayor who is charged with looking after the Cinque Ports Confederation and is the main liaison with the Lord Warden, Admiral the Lord Boyce. Michael has strong maritime connections. He has a special message inside on how he sees this important year progressing for Hythe.

Mayoral Message Welcome to the second Edition of Hythe Watch. The objective of this civic year will be Community and Enterprise. Hythe Town Council will be meeting with other organisations which make up our close community for ideas and projects that will benefit the people of Hythe, as well as our many visitors. The Venetian Fete is one of our highlights in the calendar year and those who attend this spectacular will no doubt have lasting memories of it. Thanks to all concerned for the immense efforts which go into its production.

Oaklands – Outdoor Gym This facility was opened by the Mayor in late May 2015. The total project costs were £9,641. Public health and wellbeing is a top priority and the Council decided to provide equipment in the Oaklands Park for those trying to keep fit but who have either a limited budget or who do not find it easy to visit gyms, for various reasons. The equipment comprises a bench press, cross trainer, lateral pull down and shoulder press and a dip leg raiser machine. An outdoor gym enhances outside circuit training and jogging as part of a regular fitness regime. Please read the user instructions prior to use of each piece of the equipment and make sure that you are warmed up prior to using the gym.

Seabrook Sign

Granted!

The Town Council has commissioned a sign to replace the one at the eastern boundary of the town on Seabrook Road. It will feature and celebrate the town’s historic maritime links and will form a fitting gateway into the town.

Hythe Town Council has upped its grant programme towards public events to £11,000 for this financial year, with £1,500 for Hythe in Bloom, £2,000 towards Seasonal Lighting in Hythe High Street & £7,500 towards Hythe Venetian Fete 2015.

Skatepark Makeover For those who like the challenge of skateboarding, the Town Council has added a couple of additional pieces of equipment – a grind box and a grind rail. The Skatepark has also had a complete painted colour makeover – thanks to the great efforts of the Prince’s Trust.

New Term of Office The Town Council was elected in May 2015 for a four year term and all the newly elected Councillors are shown, together with their contact details, on the back page of this newsletter. There are four wards in Hythe and please contact your local Ward Councillor with any issues or problems which you want to raise.

01303 260003 www.hythevetcentre.co.uk At Hythe Vet Centre we have invested in various new facilities and equipment that will allow us to provide excellent diagnostic and treatment options for your animals, with 24 hour emergency care on site. These include: • Dedicated parking. • Purpose built surgical theatre, imaging suite and kennels. • Spacious waiting area and large consulting rooms. • X-ray machine with digital processor allowing faster developing times. • An ultrasound scanner similar to those used in human hospitals. • Heated theatre table – to keep your loved ones cosy warm! • Air driven dental machine, not unlike what you would find at your own dentist! • The latest veterinary practice computer system – this will increase the efficiency of the mundane administration side of things. • An oxygen concentrator - this will provide the oxygen that we will use during anaesthetics. Its biggest bonus is that it means that we will not need regular oxygen bottle deliveries, reducing our environmental impact.

Combining 25 years of experience in small animal veterinary practice, Colin, Helen and their team aim to provide a first class service to both you and your beloved pets. We have applied for Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons General Practice recognition. This is a sought after accreditation that gives you peace of mind that our practice adheres to strict professional standards.

South Road Recreation Ground Football Scores Highly – Exceeding Expectations There has been an increase in football use for the 2014/15 season, with 27 “home” teams playing at South Road in this immediate past season – 11 senior and 16 junior teams. This is as a direct result of the Town Council expanding its football pitches to accommodate two additional mini pitches as well as three 9x9 pitches within the three adult pitches. We currently have 18 FA Charter Standard teams playing at South Road. This is an increase of 6 over the 2013/14 figures. Of these, 14 Charter Standard teams are from the Stars and Stripes FC and two adult teams also have Charter Status. At the recent Football Foundation Healthcheck the site achieved a “Very Good” standard mark which equates to exceeding expectations. The report states: “The site is extremely well run with good progression and plans for the future. The site is doing well in

terms of football development and will look to construct a new Football Development Plan”. The Upper Suite continues to be very well used with over 30 bookings per month. Please contact Mrs Wendy Lee at wendy.lee@hythe-kent.com or Tel 01303 266152 to book or arrange a viewing. COUNCIL IN A LEAGUE OF ITS OWN ! For the summer Hythe Town Council has arranged for some goal posts to be erected on South Road for informal kickabouts and five a side mini games. This not only helps promote football but also saves the goal mouths which are being re-seeded in the off-season.

“Pay & Play” Tennis and Bowls 10.00am – Dusk, up until 13th September, South Road public courts.

Hythe Watch News from Hythe Town Council Second Edition

Meadow Multiplay – Eaton Lands

Councillors’ Corner Councillor Laura Sullivan – Hythe South In May I discovered I had been elected as a Town Councillor. It was quite a surprise! I attended an induction given by the Town Clerk the following week, which was very useful. I am happy to help Age UK in Hythe’s becoming a dementia-friendly community. I think this is important as dementia is one of the main causes of disability in later life. We are an ageing population so it is important for people with dementia to participate in a community where they are met with kindness, patience and understanding. I have a background in youth and community work and I intend doing some voluntary work with young people locally. I noticed at the election that there were few young people involved. I want to enable Peer Research so that young people can investigate what would encourage them to take part locally in the democratic process. I have a lot to learn myself to make this project happen. All I can say is that I enjoy all the challenges that come with my new role.

Councillor David Owen – Hythe East The amenity meadow at Eaton Lands has had the addition of the play equipment – as shown in the above photograph – which the Town Council hopes will add recreational benefit to this part of East Hythe. Eaton Lands is a charity, the object of which is for recreation and this facility will enhance that purpose – for the benefit of a variety of users. The equipment replaces goal posts which had been in place for a number of years and which had, despite refurbishment over the period, become defunct.

HOW DOES THE COUNCIL WORK? To many people in Hythe the activities of Hythe Town Council may, at times, seem something of a mystery, especially when taken in conjunction with other tiers of local Government such as Kent County Council and Shepway District Council. In simple terms we all have our own areas of responsibility with, for example, Kent County Council being responsible for health care as well as roads while Shepway District Council looks after street cleaning and the Royal Military Canal. Hythe Town Council is responsible for a number of areas in Hythe including Allotments, South Road Recreation Ground and Pavilion, The Green, childrens’ play facilities and the Library building as well as administering a number of charitable bequests such as Davis Oaklands Trust which looks after Oaklands Park and House: the Offices of the Council and Eaton Lands Trust which administers this “hidden gem” of Hythe tucked away between Tanners Hill and Castle Road. The responsibility for this is assumed by sixteen elected members who form Hythe Town Council and who are all volunteers receiving no payment for their services. They are supported by professional staff such as the Town Clerk and other support staff who are responsible for carrying out the day to day operations of the Council In an article such as this, it is only possible to give a brief overview of our activities but should you wish to learn more you are always welcome to attend our Meetings which are open to the Public. Details of these can be found on our web site. Cllr David Owen, Chairman – Finance & General Purposes Committee

Saltwood Waterloo Anniversary

This year sees a series of important historical anniversarys, one of which is of particular significance to the town, namely the 200th Anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo. The Napoleonic wars of 1804-1815 saw the South Coast on high alert of an invasion by Napoleon and his imperial armies. This saw the building of the iconic Martello Towers and the Royal Military canal. Whilst the invasion never happened, this period has left a permanent mark on the town as reflected in some of the town’s road names such as Sir John Moore Avenue, Corunna Close and Twiss Road. It is easy to forget that the beautiful canal that runs through the heart of the town was once part of the first line of defences against a French invasion. In addition to these obvious connections with this famous period of history there is another little known connection found just up the hill in Saltwood.

28 | www.hythelife.org.uk

On 18 June 2015 Saltwood church played a special role in the commemorations held across Europe of the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo, as one of the heroes of the battle, Philip Sandilands, is buried in the churchyard. Children representing local schools were handed posies of laurel leaves, cornflowers and red roses by soldiers from Philip Sandilands’ regiment, the Royal Regiment of Artillery and the flowers were laid at General Sandilands’ grave.

PHILIP SANDILANDS Philip Sandilands lived at Elm Terrace, Hillside Street in Hythe. He was mayor of Hythe from 1852-1854, a Justice of the Peace and a Deputy Lieutenant of Kent. His grave and the churchyard are tended by volunteers from Saltwood church, many of whom were in attendance at the service.

Thank you to Susan Carey for providing the photos and additional information.

Roasted pumpkin soup Serves 4 | Pre heat oven to 170º C

Split the pumpkin and scrape out the seeds and pulp. Oil the inside with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Place cot side down on a roasting tray. Place one clove of unpeeled garlic an a sprig if thyme under each half of pumpkin. Roast in the oven until completely tender for about 45 minutes. When the pumpkin has cooled enough to handle, scoop out the flesh into a soup pot. Add the roasted garlic by squeezing the softened cloves out of their skin. Mash slightly with a fork and add the vegetable stock. Heat the soup to a simmer. Use an immersion blender to carefully purée the soup. For a richer soup add a bit of butter or a drizzle olive oil. Adjust the seasoning to taste with salt and pepper.

METHOD

Chilled Ricotta with candied fruit

Time: 20 minutes plus 4 hours freezing 1 Chop the candied fruit. 2 Mix together the ricotta, maraschino, sugar, lemon juice and zest until smooth. 3 Whip the cream until stiff peaks form. Mix together the cream, fruit and ricotta mixture. 4 Line 4 moulds, each 250 ml / 1 cup capacity, with plastic wrap. Divide the mixture between the molds and freeze for at least 4 hours. 5 About 10 minutes before serving, remove the molds from the freezer. Turn them out onto four plates (to dislodge: dip the molds briefly in hot water). Decorate with the blackcurrants and mint. Dust with the confectioners' (icing) sugar.

INGREDIENTS 150g / 2 cups mixed candied fruit 300g 11/2 cups ricotta cheese 40ml maraschino liqueur 50g / 1/2 cup confectioners’ (icing) sugar 1 lemon, zest and juice

Traditionally in Italy, in the summer we look for desserts that are light and in the autumn we want something a little heavier. We add the cream, maraschino and candied fruit to give you the perfect Italian taste of autumn.

250ml / 1 cup whipping cream Raspberries / Blackcurrants Mint leaves Confectioners' (icing) sugar, for dusting

Chefs tip: This can be made in pots or rolled in parchment paper and sliced when chilled.

Canal Wildlife

by Emma Whyte

By the time you read this, Hythe's biennial water spectacular, the Venetian Fete, will be over and hopefully my other half's team will have won an award or two for their float! Every time I attend, I'm reminded of an event that took place there many years ago during the interlude between the daytime and night-time parades.

It was dusk and the crowd was waiting in anticipation for the first of the night-time parade floats, when out of the corner of my eye I saw a v-shape ripple moving across the surface of the water and a little brown head at the pointed end heading purposefully for the opposite bank. The noise on the bank grew as more people noticed and started to comment. I like to think it was a water vole rather than a rat – either way it was Ratty (The Wind In the Willows). Although I haven't seen another water vole in 26 years they're sure to be there – the back drains and ditches are an ideal habitat although the Hythe stretch is probably more suited to the American mink which have so happily set up home along the banks. Water voles have declined dramatically over the last 20 years but the mink have had a great time, although this year it was announced that thanks to a strong conservation effort we now have them back in every county in the UK and the mink are being kept under control. The canal is an ideal habitat for newts and frogs too and you can watch grass snakes ripple across the surface. It has all the usual suspects when it comes to fish – roach, rudd, bream, carp, eels and tench. A lucky fisherman recently caught a 5lb 3.5oz brown trout and the carp can weigh up to 33lb.

38 | www.hythelife.org.uk

As a child, I remember hearing about the legendary giant pike who patroled the water along the Hythe stretch. The Dustbin – she apparently ate a lot, including any small dogs who got too close to the edge! Purported to be 10ft long, the fearsome image of her dark shadow across the water filled my head with horror and intrigue.

‘The legendary giant pike… purported to be 10ft long, the fearsome image of her dark shadow across the water filled my head with horror and intrigue.’ Majestic mute swans glide across the water alongside the endearing ducks who never seem to get a look in when an opportunistic seagull flock awaits! Occasionally I've seen the reptilian-looking cormorant standing on the bank – always a nice surprise. Grey herons, kingfishers and moorhens can also be seen. One of my fondest memories was taking my 10 year old daughter to West Hythe to a WCCP organised Night-time Nature Walk. Peering into

the darkness from the bridge, our torchlights caught flickers of movement as bats flitted above the surface of the water catching insects. As we walked back along the canal we spotted what we'd all been waiting for – a bright green light, like a fishing light, in the low grass along the path – a glow-worm! What an incredible sight. These glowing female beetles use their light to attract a mate. They are well worth searching for in the vegetation along the towpath on a late summer evening. An adult female glow-worm doesn't feed and only lives for around 14 days. After she has attracted a mate she turns off her light, lays her eggs and dies. THE PERFECT HABITAT The trees that line the canal provide shelter and food for many birds and mammals as well as being the ideal habitat for all sorts of caterpillars. In fact I was minding my own business sitting under a tree along the canal bank a few years ago when a privet hawkmoth caterpillar fell out of it onto the ground in front of me. These caterpillars are unmistakeable – a beautiful large green caterpillar with diagonal, purple and white stripes. Unfortunately it was being attacked by a ichneumon – a parasitic wasp which injects its egg into the body

of a caterpillar. The egg hatches and devours its host from the inside. It was all very dramatic to watch, but you've got to hand it to the Ichneumonidae family – it's very clever and gruesomely fascinating. Whatever the weather there's always something to see at the Royal Military Canal - designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a wonderful local wildlife site – you'll always find something new if you look for it. Don't forget your camera! Tf the Hythe wildlife has wetted your appetite for nature, then the White Cliffs Countryside Project often do special wildlife watching sessions – they only ask for a donation and their group walks and talks can be incredibly informative and fun. The Green Gang events are great for kids and include fossil hunting, rock pooling, bug safaris and even geocaching. You can find out about upcoming events at www.whitecliffscountryside.org.uk

COVERAGE Race coverage is available on the following channels/platforms: Motors TV – Sky 447, Freeview HD 240, Virgin 545 Premier Sports – Sky 428, Virgin 551 Online – www.750mc.co.uk

UPCOMING EVENTS If you were asked to name the various sports teams based in Hythe, I bet that you wouldn’t mention Hythe’s motor racing team. However, Stellar GP is a National Motorsport team based in Hythe and was formed by a pair of motor racing enthusiasts and good friends: Ben Powney and Matt Graux. Stellar GP will be competing in many different championships in both Kart and Car racing, particularly focusing on the 2015 Demon Tweeks & Yokohama Championship, run by the 750 Motor Club, one of the oldest and most prestigious racing clubs in the UK. The team was officially formed in 2013, and has had great success in the UK and Europe in Kart Racing. Stellar were also privileged to be one of only four teams representing the UK at the Sodi World Series Karting Finals in Paris in June 2015. Starting off in karting and being avid motorsport fans from a young age, the desire to race something bigger, better and faster was always on the cards, and in October 2014, Stellar purchased its first race car – an exchampionship winning car built by Procomp Motorsport from Birmingham. The team say the following in relation to this exciting period in their history: “It was a surreal few weeks. It started off as a pipe dream of ours; the next thing we knew, we had acquired enough sponsorship and bought a race car. We’re very normal people, we’re not rich, and yes the budgets of club motorsport are higher, but not unachievable or out of reach as long you’re willing to sacrifice some of the other

luxuries in life. We are always looking at helping companies and young drivers who want to get involved in motorsport, either behind the wheel or in sponsorship. We pride ourselves on being friendly and approachable so please contact us if you think we can help or indeed, if you can help us.” On the back of a successful start to the season, including many top-ten finishes in their maiden year and despite adversity in qualifying, Stellar aim to become a two car team in 2015. They are currently seeking financial backing from sponsors and have set up a go fund campaign on their website – www.stellargp.co.uk. If you fancy yourself as the next Eddie Jordan, or indeed Bernie Ecclestone, get in contact with the team who will be more than happy to hear from you. Race weekends are filmed and given select coverage after the event across TV and online media platforms.

New Sponsorship for Stars & Stripes We are pleased to announce that Hythe Life Magazine will be sponsoring Hythe’s Stars & Stripes under 7’s football team for the 2015/2016 football season. Under 7’s coach Lee Coleman, said “We very much welcome this generous donation which has not only enabled us to buy fantastic new kits but also new goals, footballs and other vital training equipment.” Hythe Stars & Stripes FC is a community based club, who are social, friendly and welcoming. They run 14 teams from Under 7’s right up to the Hythe Town FC linked Under 18’s team. The club provides opportunities for young people in our community to enjoy playing football in a safe environment, and continually develops and nurtures its players increasing their knowledge and enjoyment of the game. The club has the local community at its heart and very much shares our values so when it came to deciding to sponsor them it was an easy decision to make. The club is largely self-funding and benefits from sponsorships for many of the age groups. However, as with all things they would like to do more for the players and the club as a community. Therefore they are seeking a Fundraising Co-Ordinator to join the Club Committee. For further details please visit their website www.hythestarsandstripes.com. We will let you know how the team are doing in the next edition.

Hythe Sports Welcome to the Autumn edition of Hythe Life Sports. With the Ashes won and hopes high for the forthcoming Rugby World Cup, there is an air of sporting optimism as the days get shorter and a little bit chillier. This optimism is very much in evidence at the Reachfields stadium at the start of the 2015/16 football season for the Hythe Cannons. We take a look at what’s been going on at the club since the end of last season and the start of this one. As we are merely on the cusp of autumn, we also have a cricket report and a quick update on Hythe’s all-female running club, “the Blister Sisters”, who since we featured them in last year’s Autumn edition have gone from strength to strength.

New Season, New Hope for the Hythe Cannons! By the time we go to press the Cannons’ season will be well under way with an FA Cup match and a Bank Holiday local derby against fierce rivals Folkestone Invicta already under their belt. Let’s hope there will be good news to report in our football update in the next edition. There have been the inevitable coming and goings pre-season at the Cannons. Craig Thompson, Luke Harvey, Michael Yianni and Sam Bewick have departed whilst Dan Stubbs and Stephen Butcher have arrived with promises of further new faces to come. Whilst the Cannons’ start to the season has been slow there have been encouraging signs and hopes are high for a successful season. The Cannons are very much looking towards the future with the introduction of an Under 21 development squad as part of the Cannons

in the Community Initiative. The development squad will help to bridge the gap between the U18’s (jointly run with Hythe Stars & Stripes) and the 1st team. The side will be a mixture of current or previous U18 players, trialists and members of the 1st team squad in rehabilitation from injury. There has been some early good news for supporters as the club has frozen all admission prices and season tickets for the 2015/16 season. For those looking to purchase a season ticket, it will mean savings of £57, £38 and £16 for adults, concessions and Under 18’s respectively. New for the 2015/16 season is the introduction of a small charge for watching games from the unique viewing balconies. The cost is £2 per match in addition to the normal ground admission charge and subject to availability. Balcony season tickets are also available so you can reserve your place for the entire season regardless of whether you attend some or all of the games. Tickets are priced at £50 for adults, £40 for concessions (including over 60’s) and £20 for U18’s. This cost is again payable in addition to ground admission. All-singing, all-dancing combined ground and balcony season tickets are also available! Continued on page 56…

We will list the fixtures for December, January, February in the next issue along with a review of the Cannons’ season so far. Finally on a sad note , everybody at the club was devastated by the tragic news of the untimely death of youth team player Henry Fulcher in a road traffic accident. Henry’s family and friends joined members of the first team and the U18’s on the pitch before the recent game with Herne Bay for a minute’s silence. Players and staff donned t-shirts bearing Henry’s name and date of birth whilst his boots and shirt were

placed on the centre spot during the pre-match ceremony. The club issued the following statement , “Henry was one of the nicest people you could meet and had the potential to go all the way to the top and we had high expectations of him in what would have been his first full season at senior level”. Our thoughts and condolences go to Henry’s family and friends.

Blister Sisters Update Since we featured them in our Autumn edition last year, Hythe’s all-female running group has grown enormously, with a sea of pink now to be seen running around the town on a Wednesday night. The success of the group is down to the hard work and dedication of its founder, Kenza Bowman. This was recognised at the inaugural Shepway Sport’s Trust awards where Kenza picked up not one but two awards, taking home the trophies for Community Sports Project of the Year and the prestigious Outstanding Contribution of the year award. Hugely deserved! For further information on joining the Blister Sisters check out their website www.hytheblistersisters.co.uk , facebook group- facebook.com/hytherun or contact Kenza on 07584 134376 email:hytheblistersisters@yahoo.co.uk

Cricket Update At the time of going to press our local teams are in the final throes of their league campaigns. As reported in our last edition, the Saltwood players are loving the new wicket, especially the batsmen. There has been an unprecedented number of centuries, with the standout performance being that of 16 year old Arthur Leaver’s 155 not out which inspired the Wood to a league win against Harrietsham. Arthur’s mammouth knock consisted of 20 fours and a six off the last ball to win the game and notch up his 155. Other batting performances worthy of a mention are Ryan Hall’s 124 against Hythe Green and Jake Goodwin’s 120 against Stowting, one of three centuries so far this season for the young Aussie. The club’s older boys have made sure they have not been left out with club stalwart (and Chairman) Ian Oakes recording bowling figures of 5-11 off 10 overs and Jo “Josh” Pritchard taking 5-27 on a separate occasion. These performances have led to Saltwood fighting for promotion in both the Kent Village League and the Kent Regional League. Fingers crossed for a season double! Hythe Green CC are also benefitting from the new wicket at Saltwood. Whilst the Green may not be matching their landlord’s league success, they have also seen some stunning individual performances. In particular, Nick Allen’s innings against Minster in the Regional League is the real standout. Nick hit a colossal 218 not out in 119 balls consisting of 37 4’s and 6 6’s. A truly outstanding innings. The Green are safe from relegation this year and will look to consolidate their league position in the final few games. Hythe CC are in superb form this year with the First XI again benefitting from the batting of former IPL star Sujit Nayak. Nayak is again closing in on being the league’s top scorer for this season. Both the First and Second XI are closing in on promotion in Divisions 2 & 4 respectively of the Kent League and the Sunday XI are topping the

table in the East Kent League. All in all it is shaping up to be a highly successful season down at the Grove. Hopefully we will be reporting on championship wins and promotions in the next issue!
