Hythe Town Concert Band The Early Years
by Deryck Euden
Above is the Hythe Town Military Band as it appeared in 1893
It is generally accepted that the Hythe Town Band was formed around the year 1880, which in effect makes it one of the oldest town bands (brass and reed) in the country. However, a newspaper article written by a Mr E Palmer in the Hythe Reporter dated 1927, says he recollects hearing the Hythe Town Band playing outside the ‘Dukes Head Inn’ around 1862. If Mr Palmer’s observation is correct, then the roots of the Hythe Band could probably go back much further than the accepted date of 1880. As such, this 1927 newspaper article provides interesting and valuable insight as to the origins of the Hythe Band. The band was formed with the aid of a donation from the Town Council to purchase instruments. It would seem that during these early years the band’s future was by no means certain because they disbanded and were resurrected a number of times. It was not until a Mr J H C Nelson took over the band around
14 | www.hythelife.org.uk
1893 that things began to improve. At this time, rehearsals took place in the ‘skittle alley’ at the Dukes Head but again, with the help of the town council a band room was built which is now the garage opposite the Conservative Club in Portland Road. Around 1900, the band also became the brigade band of the 1st Cinque Ports Artillery Volunteers for which they were supplied with ‘smart uniforms’. There are also references about the Hythe Band playing at the send-off of the East Kent Volunteers to South Africa to participate in the Boer War during January and February of that year. It was only a few months later that there appears to have been a dispute within the band which came to a head with a number of band members resigning from the band and,
after meeting at the ‘Sportsman’ public house in Hythe High Street, which was later destroyed by a fire and is now a clothes shop, they decided to form their own band and became known as the Excelsior Band. An attempt was made in 1904 to heal the rift but to no avail. The original band played on until eventually in March 1906 a decision was made to wind up its affairs and instruments were sold to pay off a debt. The Excelsior Band remained active, however, and took over the role as ‘Town Band’ in effect and eventually assumed that name. The band continued to perform in and around Hythe, playing under the Town Hall, ‘up the Street’, in Red Lion Square, along the canal bank and at many social events such as Hythe Cricket Week and various flower shows. The band also took to the street in 1912 to raise money to help the families of those lost when the Titanic sank in April of that year. Continued on page 16

The colourful Hythe Town Excelsior Military Band, founded in 1900
Following the end of the First World War, the band enjoyed significant recognition and success. The photograph below of the band was taken in the late 1920s. The young girl sitting in the front is Joan Fielder, the band secretary’s daughter, who was also the band’s mascot. At the centre of the picture, the bass drummer can be seen wearing a drum apron made from the skin of a leopard and there is an interesting story concerning the acquisition of this apron. Around 1901/1902 the Excelsior Band were playing on the beach off Marine Parade in Hythe, when a Mr Orchard who had heard them playing invited the band into his grounds. Mr Orchard was in a ‘spinal chair’ and explained how he met with his accident. He
showed the band a leopard skin and explained that while big-game shooting he had shot the leopard, but before the animal died it badly mauled him resulting in injuries requiring the need for a wheelchair. The skin still had the bullet hole showing where Mr Orchard’s bullet had entered the unfortunate beast. Sometime later, as Mr Orchard became a more enthusiastic supporter of the band, he had the ‘trophy’ turned into a ‘big-drummer’s apron’. The bass drummer at the time was a Horace Fisher, and it was presented to him in May 1907 during a concert held at the Hythe Institute by Mrs Orchard. Although no longer used, this leopard skin is still in the band’s possession today, complete with bullet hole. Another trophy still held by today’s band is
a silver cup bearing the arms of Ostend, which was presented to the band in August 1925 as a souvenir by the Burgomaster of Ostend in recognition of the ‘fine performance’ they had given in that town. Hythe Band was England’s sole representative in a musical festival organised by the town of Ostend, in which around 20 bands in total from France, Belgium, Holland and Germany also took part. Back in Hythe the band celebrated at the White Hart Hotel where the silver cup was filled and handed round amongst the bandsmen and friends. Today, nearly 140 years on, the band continues to perform at both civic and social functions, giving concerts in and around Hythe and occasionally abroad. There is a trip to Germany planned later this year. CALLING ALL MUSICIANS If you play a musical instrument the Hythe Town Concert Band is always ready to welcome new brass, wind and percussion players into its senior and training sections.

Hythe’s Golden Girl The injured servicewoman from Hythe who lit up the Invictus Games Usain Bolt and the late George Best share more than just legendary status in their respective sports: they are prime examples of what the Romans described as ‘nomen est omen’ or ‘name is destiny’. If further proof is needed that one's name can be a very good measure of its possessor, look no further than Lance Corporal Kimberley Sterling, a serving Army combat medic and Invictus Games four-time gold medallist in 2014.
Kimberley, 26, was born and brought up in Hythe and has recently returned to take up a posting with the Second Battalion, the Gurkha Rifles, who are based in Shorncliffe. She suffered a life-changing foot injury whilst on Army exercises in spring 2013, exacerbated by later surgical complications. “Unfortunately, I woke up from surgery not being able to walk. They diagnosed me with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, or CRPS for short. There's no cure, so I'm never going to be free of it.” For a serving soldier with a career dependent upon maintaining peak physical fitness, it was potentially devastating news. However, the opportunity to attend a rehabilitation course at Headley Court, the world-class centre for injured service personnel, proved to be Kimberley's salvation. It was at Headley Court that Kimberley met the physiotherapist to whom she says she 'owes everything' and who made her realise that, despite her injury, she remained a talented athlete. “I have always loved swimming; in fact, my mother was in the Hythe Imperial pool the day before I was born so I am a real water baby. It was a running joke with my physio and the rehabilitation instructors that I couldn't necessarily walk at the time, but I could beat everyone – men included – in the pool. I was extremely limited in gym rehabilitation classes
18 | www.hythelife.org.uk
but in the pool I felt normal again, not like that person who couldn't do anything. It was then it was suggested to me that I should try for the Invictus Games.” The Invictus Games was the brainchild of Prince Harry, himself a serving Army officer, and who Kimberley describes as “just one of the guys”. He set about creating an international, Paralympic-style event for wounded, sick and injured service personnel. The Games took their inspiration from a line from the haunting poem, Invictus, by William Ernest Henley, “I am the master of my fate; I am the captain of my soul.” TOP SPOT ON THE PODIUM Invictus itself means ‘unconquered’, and that sums up Kimberley's experience at the inaugural Games in 2014, where she left the pool with four Team GB gold medals hanging around her neck. Kimberley had to see off stiff competition from her American and Australian rivals, both of whom had faster times than hers, in order to claim the top spot on the podium. “It was one of those moments when you think, ‘I’m in the (London) Olympic pool, this is actually happening.... It was so surreal. My amazing coach had faith in me though; he told me not to let them psyche me out and then I won all my heats in the morning. I'd never swum that fast, but then I was worried I had done too much
and worn myself out for the afternoon finals. But when I went into the water everything went calm. My final race was the 100m, there were banners up with my name, and I could hear people shouting for me. It was packed: the pool events had sold out months in advance. It was then that I realised what I had done. I don't think I ever swam this fast when I was fully fit!” Kimberley's experience underlined to her that a life-changing injury does not have to be life-limiting. “Invictus showed that you can be injured but anything is possible. It opened a lot of doors for a lot of people who thought their lives were over, and some are going for the Rio Paralympics now. A lot of us had been at Headley Court at the same time, and it was like being with your extended family at the end of the day; we had been through so much and had a lot of emotional strength in our team because of that. At Headley Court, they enable you to believe that you can do anything if you want to do it. People get branded disabled, but they show you that you can have any injury and you don't have to be stuck in that one lifestyle of being limited.” Inspired by her own Invictus success, and keen to find new challenges, Kimberley is already planning new adventures. “I still swim every evening, and I would love to get into the GB Masters’ Swimming team, so I have joined Hythe Swimming Club. I love doing fitness events, just to prove that I can do normal things again. I’d also absolutely love to swim the Channel: I just need to find someone to do it with!” From wondering whether her foot would be amputated to winning gold medals for her country within the space of a year, Kimberley embodies the spirit of Invictus so hauntingly captured in William Ernest Henley’s verse. A sterling effort indeed.

Update by Colin Armstrong BVM&S MRCVS GPCert (SAP)
When I graduated from the University of Edinburgh and started my veterinary career thirteen years ago, my goal was always to run my own clinic.
I was always told that running your own business was a difficult job, but I never quite believed it. Whether it is a VAT return, bill to pay, or picture to hang, there is always something to do! However, my favorite part of it all is when I get to do what I enjoy the most – working with the animals, their families and actually being a vet. We opened our doors in December 2014 with an aim to provide the families of Hythe and surrounding areas an outstanding veterinary service for their loved pets. Over the year we have settled well as a team and believe that we are achieving this. We think that how a practice 'feels' is just as important as the equipment it has and the services it offers when it comes to providing great veterinary care. So whilst we do have lots of shiny equipment, we also invest considerable time and enthusiasm into making sure that our customer care is second to none. We promise that every member of our team will always be approachable, honest, compassionate and understanding; and we'll never take your trust in us for granted. In fact, 100% of our clients surveyed believe that the care we provide is excellent. We didn't have much of a winter this year, but it is a time that we see some of our loved ones

stiffening up a bit. As with us, arthritis is a common complaint in animals, and the cold does seem to exacerbate it. The only way a pet can communicate discomfort or pain is to display changes in personality, character or performance. In a lot of cases these changes can be hard to spot because the animal will often only subtly change its gait to compensate for the problem. Quite regularly a lot of owners will view these subtle changes as ‘getting older’ and not necessarily as being in pain and as a consequence go untreated. One of our aims as a practice is to become an integral part of the community within Hythe, and as a consequence we are pleased to be working with local osteopath Niki Mathews Bsc Ost (Hons) BHSAI Cert. Ed. Animal osteopathy is a branch of osteopathy which works on the same principles and theories as human osteopathy, but with the specific manipulative techniques used by osteopaths modified to take into account the difference between the human and the animal anatomical structures. If you think that you would like us to take a look at your little one, or even if you want to have a look round then please do not hesitate to give us a call.
WE OFFER EXTENDED OPENING HOURS TO SUIT YOUR BUSY LIFE • Monday to Friday 8.30am to 6.30pm • Saturday 9am to midday 24-HOUR EMERGENCY CARE FROM OUR OWN VETS Outside of normal hours we run our own emergency service – your pet will always be seen by someone familiar, who understands his or her individual needs. As someone who has lived in this area for nearly 25 years, I was excited to be given the opportunity to bring Handelsbanken a little closer to home. In 2015, we opened our Ashford branch whose catchment area covers Hythe and Saltwood. Having joined Handelsbanken in 2009, after 32 years with a major high street bank, I have seen our branch network grow locally and when I opened our Canterbury office in 2011, we were the 93rd branch in the UK. We now have over 200 branches and our growth has coincided with many other banks withdrawing from local areas. We have seen this first hand only recently where one of the UK major banks decided to close their branch in Hythe. I BELIEVE THAT OUR GROWTH IS BASED ON 3 FUNDAMENTAL COMMITMENTS: • delivering outstanding local advice, service and decisions based only on the customer’s needs; • a commitment to long term customer relationships; • and a belief in consistent, prudent banking.
Our success is based on satisfied customers. For the seventh year running we have been voted the bank with the most satisfied customers in Britain – for both individual and corporate banking (Source: EPSI). If our traditional values appeal to you then why not give me or one of my colleagues a call and experience the difference for yourself.

Pro Plumb Celebrates 10 Years in the Bathrooms Business Folkestone-based business, Pro Plumb, will celebrate its tenth year of successful trading in August 2016. Started in 2006 by current partners Nigel Buss and Simon Bullman, Pro Plumb is an independent company specialising in high-end, innovative bathroom and heating solutions. Simon and Nigel, whose combined experience in the industry extends to twenty-five years, are passionate about plumbing technology and have
Nigel Buss and Simon Bullman of Pro Plumb
a wealth of expertise which enables them to source some of the most innovative products on the market. Pro Plumb prides itself on delivering a market-leading product range, sourced primarily from British and European manufacturers, including brands such as Vitra, Laufen and Rocca. Its showroom boasts tap-less baths controlled entirely by remote control, ‘smart’ toilets with motion and light sensors, self-cleaning showerscreens and beautifully-crafted copper taps and basins. As Nigel explains, “we want our customers to walk through the door and say “oh wow!” That is a reaction that you cannot get when you look at things on the internet. Most people are unaware of the amazing technology available now in bathrooms and you can only really appreciate it by seeing it for yourself. We try to ask all the right questions to ensure that our customers are happy with what they buy. When you go to a chain store, you just don’t get the same level of service or expertise that an independent like us can offer.”
Over the course of its decade in business, the company has seen significant changes, not least of which was the 2009 global financial crisis. Although it was a worrying time for Nigel and Simon, both of whom had put significant personal investment into the company, Pro Plumb rode the recession remarkably well and came out of it stronger than ever. The opening of the high-speed train service from Ashford to St Pancras in 2007 also had an impact, with an increase in customers from the London area buying properties in East Kent. But the most dramatic change has been in the industry’s approach to the bathroom space, elevating it from a purely functional, ‘wash and go’ room to a sanctuary providing a luxurious escape from the hurly burly of the outside world. As a result, the received wisdom that electrics have no place in bathrooms has been replaced by an explosion in high-end bathroom technology, which the team at Pro Plumb find hugely inspiring. “Our goal is to keep ahead of the game,” says Nigel, “we want to stay at the forefront of the technology.” Although Pro Plumb now has ten years behind it, the future is what really drives the company on, and with exciting plans in the pipeline (watch this space!), that future looks bright.

The Language of Jewellery By Alison Chapman – Owner, Owlets Hythe Ltd
I am an incurable romantic and the language behind jewellery has always excited me. Throughout the ages men and women have succumbed to their love of jewellery. 2

1 Butterfly Antique Victorian butterfly brooch, garnet, moonstone, rubies and diamond; 2 Heart Edwardian heart-shaped padlock; 3 Cross ring Black enamel mourning ring set with pearls, Victorian, with a locket back to the reverse for a memento such as hair or a miniature; 4 Forget-me-not flower brooch set with pearl and turquoise, made around 1914 – 1918; 5 Nyx goddess of the night cameo brooch the goddess Nyx was born near the beginning of creation symbolising knowledge coming from darkness.
Jewellery has been worn as an expression of wealth, because of the belief that there are powers in certain stones to ward off evil, to cure illnesses, or even to indicate a belief in something secret! Much of the early jewellery was influenced by religion; some pieces of jewellery would (allegedly) hold the bones of saints and you could buy these relics from your local priest. These were worn to ward off evil and death. Decorative stone encrusted crosses, stunning Bishops’ rings,

even memento mori jewellery, a reminder to all that we do not live forever and our day of reckoning is unavoidable. Death walked with our ancestors every day and the custom eventually developed of giving mourning jewellery to friends and families after the loss of a loved one. In fact, the practice was so fashionable that Samuel Pepys bequeathed 123 rings upon his death in 1703. These mementoes were worn in memory of and in celebration of the life of a loved one. Today, there are many collectors of British mourning jewellery from all over the world. The attraction lies in the possibility of researching the history of the deceased person, as the pieces are usually engraved
1
with a name, a date of birth and the date of death. Pieces such as this are highly prized. You may be familiar with Whitby jet, which is often seen in mourning jewellery. It is thought that due to its intense black colour, Queen Victoria favoured Whitby jet, as she wanted nothing to alleviate the desperation and darkness she experienced at the loss of her Prince Albert. But there is much more to the language of jewellery beyond life and death. Insects and reptiles have been common motifs of antique jewellery since Roman times. A snake came to represent not only eternal life but eternal love, and when Queen Victoria and Prince Albert became engaged in 1839, a snake ring was what they chose. SYMBOLISM Since Roman times, the lizard has represented fidelity and faithfulness; bees, the symbol of industry and fertility. Flying swallows were often given by sailors to their sweethearts, symbolising their return. An anchor, a common Victorian symbol, meant salvation, faith and balance. Butterflies signified renewal, rebirth and the cycles of life. The simple padlock and key, a loyal heart. A heart means love and devotion, a flaming heart, passion, and a crowned heart means love is triumphant. Hands, such as one would see on a Claddagh ring, convey lasting friendship and enduring love. Sweetheart brooches became very fashionable in the 1800s, are usually made from silver, and are adorned with little motifs, words of sentiment and flowers. The interest in the language of flowers in jewellery has been revived somewhat since the wedding of Prince William and Kate. The royal couple used flowers to give subtle but rich meaning to their wedding: lily of the valley – the return of happiness; rosemary – remembering; ivy – fidelity in marriage; forget-me-not – true love; daisy – innocence; and pansies – ‘think of me’. The use of flowers conveys a great deal of meaning when used in jewellery. Next issue: More on the meaning behind jewellery, focusing on the language of gemstones.

Hythe Watch News from Hythe Town Council Fifth Edition
Councillor’s Corner Message from the Mayor Ann Mayne
Over the last nine years as your councillor for Hythe South Ward, I have served on numerous committees. However, I have paid particular attention to the Finance and General Purposes and CCTV committees because I want to ensure that the residents of Hythe get value for money for their council taxes. As a councillor, it is gratifying to see projects come to fruition. I played a major part in researching and persuading the council to invest in the two new children’s play areas on Hythe Green and Oaklands. I love to see the children enjoy themselves – and I must admit to trying out some of the equipment before the facilities were opened. There have to be some advantages to being a councillor! I’ve also had the great privilege of being mayoress during the last civic year. The mayoress is appointed by the mayor as his companion, and it has been an amazing experience. Perhaps the highlight was during the Venetian fete when I was rowed up the Royal Military Canal on a float with the mayor, Admiral of the Cinque ports Lord Boyce and Lady Boyce. One of my favourite roles is band coordinator for the free Sunday afternoon band concerts held at Oaklands. This year we have teamed up with Hythe and Lyminge AgeUK in Stade Street. They will be serving teas, soft drinks and food throughout the performances from 3pm until 5pm. During the remaining three years of my term as a councillor, one of my aims is to work with AgeUK, other volunteer groups, businesses, traders and care-homes to make Hythe a dementia friendly town. Dementia affects people in so many different ways, and it is one of the main causes of disability in later life. Anything we can do to increase awareness and reduce the stigma will be worthwhile. Councillor Ann Mayne

A YEAR OF CHANGE Nobody ever said it would be easy being town mayor. Since I was elected as town mayor last May, Hythe Town Council has seen many changes. Eight new councillors started their term of office, with nine re-elected councillors, a resignation and a by-election. We’ve also had to recruit a new town clerk and budget for a substantial reduction in the support grant that we receive from Shepway District Council. Chris Capon, former Hythe town mayor, honorary freeman and long-standing councillor sadly passed away earlier this year. A well-known – and sometimes refreshingly controversial – character around Hythe, among other things he was known for his quick wit, The Right Worshipful Town Mayor of his bicycle and his genuine care for Hythe and its Hythe & Speaker of the Cinque Ports, residents. Town councillors and others gathered Councillor Michael Lyons at the town hall to pay their respects to him as the funeral procession passed by on 11th March 2016, and I was pleased to be invited to read a lesson in the Catholic Church. In February, after a hard-fought by-election I was pleased to congratulate and welcome Councillor Ashley Tanton to Hythe Town Council. Ashley has quickly built a reputation as an astute local campaigner, and I’m sure he will make a good contribution to Hythe. It was a great personal honour to have been speaker of the Cinque Ports this year, and my fellow councillor John Gabris – who is a professional photographer – kindly agreed to take my picture with my speaker’s badge of office. I will be passing the speakership on to the town mayor of Dover in a few weeks’ time. I hope that in the next civic year, things will settle down a little. But whatever the future brings, I will always look back fondly on my time as mayor, and of course I thank the people of Hythe for electing me.
Mayor making, Civic Sunday and Armed Forces day These three traditional events are opportunities to peek behind the administration of Hythe Town Council and see some of the pageantry that helps to make Hythe such a unique town. The mayor making takes place on 26th May at 12:00. Councillors get an opportunity to elect the town mayor for the next civic year. It is normally a celebratory event, with the outgoing mayor looking back on the successes and challenges of the last year, and the incoming mayor looking forward to next year’s tasks. The Civic Sunday service is a traditional and annual event in St Leonard’s Church. This year it will be on 10th July, toward the end of the Hythe festival. Civic Sunday is always special and gives the people of Hythe the chance to show pride in their local community. Armed Forces Day is being celebrated this year on Saturday 9th July 2016 to honour our fighting men and women. The Parade will form up at Douglas Avenue at 10.40 am. The Parade will be followed by a Service at the Town Hall Undercroft at 11.00 am in the presence of the Town Mayor and Leaders and Representatives of many Organisations. We are keeping our fingers crossed for sunshine and hope that as many people as possible will be able to join us.

Chris Capon Former Hythe town mayor, honorary freeman and longstanding councillor Chris Capon sadly passed away this year. Chris served as a Kent county councillor for Hythe for 46 years following his election in 1977 until his retirement at the last county council elections in 2013. He was granted an MBE for his services to local government in the Queen's Birthday Honours in 2012. He first joined Hythe Town Council in 1967 and left the council 40 years later during which time he became the town's youngest mayor aged 34 in 1972. Throughout his career he served as speaker of the Cinque Ports and was granted the title of honorary freeman of Hythe for his service to the town in 2013. He was a Shepway district councillor from its formation in 1974 until 2002. Chris left an impressive footprint on Hythe, its residents and the town council. He will be long remembered.
Bandstand & programme It’s not often that you get something for nothing, but the bandstand concerts running this summer in Oaklands park are absolutely free. This year, we have assembled a varied collection of musicians from brass bands to pop, easy listening, jazz and vocal artists. While it’s impossible to please everyone, we sincerely hope that we have booked acts that suit your musical tastes.
Hythe Festival Thanks to its hard-working and dedicated committee, and supported with a grant from Hythe Town Council, this year’s festival looks like being the best ever. There will be events taking place across Hythe from 1st to 10th July with free parking on the Green for several displays, shows and parades. Check for specific event details by clicking through to the ‘What’s on’ section at www.hythefestival.co.uk or visit the festival’s information desk at the Town Hall undercroft in the High Street while the festival is running. The festival’s launch is on Saturday 25th June in the High Street. This year’s theme is Royalty, to tie in with the Queen’s 90th year. Please come along and enjoy the entertainment; it’s put on for your benefit The Poperinge town band are superb musicians, and we want to see and their apearance is always a highlight of the everyone having a Hythe Festival. good time.

Hythe residents enjoyed a free display of fireworks provided by the town council on the occasion of the Queen’s birthday. The fine (though cold) evening in April 2016 brought out hundreds of residents to see the spectacular show over Hythe bay.
Throughout the UK, towns and villages celebrated the Queen’s 90th birthday with beacons, bonfires and fireworks. Hythe Town Council was pleased to play its part.
Highways pilot
Boot fairs are held throughout the summer. There’s bound to be one that is suitable for you.
We all know the feeling that if only a minor change could be made, it would significantly enhance our daily lives. That’s why Hythe Town Council was pleased that County Councillor Martin Whybrow approached the town council to work with him on a pilot scheme to identify and make a few small changes to our roads that will help with transport in Hythe. The council set up a project team and identified three schemes that they felt would make a difference: 1. Improvements to Hythe High Street to facilitate better pedestrian and traffic flows. 2. A controlled pedestrian crossing on the Dymchurch Road (A259) by the Prince of Wales public house. 3. Traffic calming for Stade Street and improved visibility for all joining roads. It’s too early yet to see how well the projects will work out. The team has a lot more work to do to verify that these schemes are appropriate, to engage with Kent County Council’s highways department and to find sources of finance. We’ll keep you informed of progress.

Carnival fever coming to town by Nichola Evans, Word-It
Every two years for two weeks in July, carnival fever hits Hythe. Street parades, musical extravaganzas, comedy nights, fun fairs, competitions, tours of the town and its highlights are all packed together into 10 days of fun that on the whole is free of charge. Yes, Hythe Festival, organised by a group of committed local volunteers and funded through kind sponsorship from a raft of local businesses, is all about bringing the town folk together and inviting people from further afield to see the beauty of Hythe. I have never known an event like Hythe Festival – so much packed into under two weeks, and anyone can attend regardless of how much money they have. REALISING WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT If I am honest I hadn’t really taken notice of Hythe Festival over the years – I’d been to the odd event but hadn’t realised they were part
of a much bigger scheme. I’m sure I am not the only one. It all dawned on me two years ago – we took our children to the Green and could not believe all the rides and inflatables were free of charge. I looked into it and realised there was so much more going on. There was all sorts – choral concerts, an open day at Hythe Ranges, not forgetting the fireworks display. So much was happening that we had to sort out our calendar to make sure we didn’t miss out. So this year, I am fully prepared – I have my ‘favourite’ events pencilled in on the calendar! SO WHAT’S HAPPENING? My favourite events are the family oriented ones
“We had to sort out our calendar to make sure we didn’t miss out!”
which largely take place over the weekends. With two children under 7, Pop in the Park, Street Parade and Free for all on the Green, are our highlights for Saturday 2 July. On Sunday 3 July we’ll be heading to the canal for the Great Raft Race, and over to the Ranges for their open day. Then on Saturday 9 July we will respect our Armed Forces as they parade through the town. A highlight I am most looking forward to is the Seafront Spectacular on Sunday 10 July and of course, the stunning fireworks display on 6 July after the Military Canal Concert. But there is so much more going on for people who do not work during the week. I can’t possibly list everything here – daily events, from the photographic competition, guided walks, musical events of all kinds, art displays, dancing, and even dog shows. Mark up your calendar now!

Garden Wildlife in your Shed by Emma Whyte
Sheds aren't just places for gardeners to hide – they are also home to many different species of garden wildlife who appreciate the abundant food source and shelter from predators and the wind and rain.
Sheds come in all shapes and sizes, but from the wildlife point of view, what it’s made of is of upmost importance. The best sheds are old wooden ones that have been a bit neglected. Most modern sheds have been treated with wood preservatives or Creosote to prevent decay and attack from wood boring beetles. Unfortunately these chemicals act as a repellent, or are even poisonous to invertebrates, and will significantly reduce the numbers of harmless insects such as butterflies.
48 | www.hythelife.org.uk
Nevertheless, even the least appealing shed offers shelter from the weather and somewhere to hide from predators, so it's always worth a closer look. HIBERNATING BUTTERFLIES On a warm winter day, you may hear a sharp rustling sound as a hibernating butterfly opens and closes its wings. In spring, they may be more visible, fluttering up against windows, trying to escape. Many species of
butterfly overwinter as adults in cool dry places like sheds – the small tortoiseshell and the peacock can both be found. They may be colourful butterflies whilst they are active, but whilst they are resting, the underside of their wings are the only part visible and these are usually cleverly camouflaged so that the butterfly can escape undetected.

COSY MICE Many sheds make great homes for wood mice and yellow-necked mice and the colder nights in autumn make a shed a very comfy place for a mouse to hide. They sometimes make a nuisance of themselves, gnawing on bulbs or munching through bird seed stores, but they do no real harm and they don't smell or carry disease. If you find a mouse in your shed it is likely to be one of these two species. A house mouse prefers places with more food and they are also quite smelly. Yellow-necked mice are quite rare and a real bonus for the garden wildlife list. Their distribution is patchy and local, but south east England is a good place to find them. NOCTURNAL SPIDERS Of course, usually the first creature to make their appearance known in a shed is a spider, although it's usually the web you see first. The spiders usually hide behind wooden boxes, or in amongst pots or bags of compost, mainly because they are nocturnal. If you visit a shed at night you may be surprised to see how many there are! SLEEPING BATS If you find a single bat in your shed in the summer months, it's likely to be a male pipistrelle. They like to live alone, away from the noisy nursery roosts. They can squeeze themselves into really small spaces and as they sleep during the day, they reduce their body temperature to conserve energy, so can sometimes be presumed dead if they are found because they can be cold to the touch. However, if their wings are able to be spread without damage then they are usually just in low energy mode. Dead bats dry out quickly and their wings are very brittle. TOADS AND WOODLICE SEEKING FOOD Toads very often like to live in a shed because of the abundance of available food in the form of invertebrates and grubs. Woodlice can often be found clustered in a corner – they need to stay damp because, as crustaceans, they lack the effective waterproof skin that insects have. They also like eating debris and rotting wood, so a shed is ideal. They're interesting little things and don't do any harm. WASPS AND BEES The smallest gaps in shed walls allow wasps to get in and the shed will provide them with not only the space to create their communal nest, but also the material to build it with. Wasps chew untreated wood and mosh it up into a pulp with their saliva. They spread this pulp with their jaws to create new chambers and extend the walls of the nest. The wasps all die off over the winter, apart from the queens who will stay there until the following spring. Solitary bees also make nests in small cavities in the walls, but their nests will be much smaller than honey bee hives or wasp nests. Solitary bees may stay in the nest for a year before becoming adults and they play an important part in pollinating gardens and wild plants. So, next time you are pottering in your shed, keep an eye out and an ear open – you may be surprised to find out who else shares the space with you.

Barrow Hill Veterinary Group we will shortly be opening a new scanner facility at our Ashford Hospital. The new Toshiba scanner will allow us to  examine internal organs and boney structures in 3D with better detail and accuracy reducing the need for invasive procedures. We are one of the first practices in Kent to install a CT scanner within their premises. What is a CT scanner? A CT scan (Computed Tomography) uses X-rays to produce images of a patient’s body, but unlike traditional two-dimensional X-rays, CT scans create incredibly detailed cross-sectional images (slices) by rotating around the body as the patient moves through the doughnut shaped hole. A CT scanner is also advantageous over traditional x-rays because it can display a combination of soft tissue, bones and blood vessels in a single 3D image. This will have a huge impact on the more complicated orthopaedic, soft tissue and cancer investigations that we are able perform at the hospital. Clients at our Hythe & New Romney clinics can be referred to our hospital for scans to be performed on the advice of your vet and without the need to travel long distances.

So near, yet so far for Hythe Cannons
It may have been a season of footballing fairy tales, but in the end it proved not to be a happy ending for Hythe Cannons as they were ultimately unsuccessful in their bid for promotion. After a remarkable season which saw the Cannons turn from relegation candidates to the form team of the league, chasing promotion, it all came down to two games. Having secured their play-off place with a comfortable 3-0 home win against Chipstead, the Cannons knew that the result of their final league game against fellow play-off candidates Faversham Town would determine whether they would get home advantage in the play-off semi-final. A lot hinged on this as potential opponents Worthing have a 3G artificial pitch, a surface which if not played on regularly can take some getting used to. EXTRAORDINARY RESULT Unfortunately the Cannons were beaten 4-0 by a well drilled Faversham side and faced the prospect of an away play-off semi-final. Then followed what can only be described as an extraordinary result as Worthing fully capitalised on their home/pitch advantage thumping the Cannons 7-0. Given that the Cannons had beaten Worthing 3-0 back in February, nobody could have envisaged such a one sided game. A clearly shell shocked manager Clive Cook said that it would take some time to get over the result. Worthing ultimately went on to win the play off final and secure promotion to the Ryman Premier. When the dust has settled and the manager and team have had proper time to reflect they should be proud of their achievements this season. After staring down the barrel of relegation in October the Cannons went on an amazing run inspired by new manager Cook and some shrewd new signings to end up 4th in a very competitive league. Although the season ended in disappointed the future is looking bright and with a full season ahead with Clive Cook in charge the sky’s the limit!

CRICKET
Cricket teams back in action Now that summer is here, our three local cricket teams are back on the pitch. SALTWOOD STARTS IN STYLE After winning promotion to Division 1A East of the Kent Regional Cricket League last year, Saltwood started their campaign in style knocking up a total of 337-3 in a win over Folkestone 3rd XI. Hopefully their Kent Village League Division 3 campaign will start in a similar fashion. The Wood are expecting another excellent season with overseas player Joey Pratt (all the way from Queensland, Australia) expected to make a big impact. Hythe Life is pleased to be Saltwood CC’s kit sponsors for the 2016 season. SALTWOOD JUNIORS The junior section of the club is also thriving with 47 boys and girls enjoying their weekly coaching sessions. Any interested colts are more than welcome to come along and join them on Monday evenings. For more details of the Colts section see www.saltwoodcc.com/colts.
HYTHE CC LOOKING FOR FURTHER PROMOTION Hythe CC’s First XI start their second season in Division 2 of the Kent League after winning promotion the season before last. They will be pushing hard for promotion to Division 1 after consolidating their position in Division 2 last season. The Second XI will be in Division 3 of the Kent League after gaining promotion last year. Finally, the Sunday XI will play in Division 1 of the East Kent League after also gaining promotion last season. Hythe Life wishes all three teams the best of luck and will provide a full update on their respective league campaigns in the next edition.

HYTHE GREEN LOOKING FORWARD TO GOOD SEASON Hythe Green CC will again be sharing Saltwood’s ground this season and will hope to emulate their landlord’s successful start. The Green will be competing in Division 1B East of the Kent Regional Cricket League and will be looking to improve upon their mid table finish last season.
