Stylish Floors Decorating with Rugs at Mulberry Flooring

Mulberry Flooring Rug Event

off Rugs

throughout December Give your room a quick and easy makeover with a gorgeous new rug. There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to choosing a rug, but a carefully placed rug that complements your decor, will anchor your space and define the area. A useful tip, is to measure the size of your seating area and note the room’s traffic pattern. The closest rug size up from your defined seating area is a good place to start and you can always mark it out with some masking tape to see how it would fit.

A small room may require a small rug, which floats in front of the sofa, but make sure the rug has 15-25cm either side of the sofa. If the rug is the same size it may look too small. In a large room or open plan area where your furniture is floating, then a larger rug is needed or it can make the room look smaller. Placing a rug beneath your dining furniture introduces a sense of luxury and personality. You need to choose a rug that is large enough so that guests can push back their chairs without sliding off! For a cosier bedroom a wool rug adds instant texture and warmth. Try creating a perimeter around the lower two thirds of your bed or place small runners along each side. A deep plush pile is always a welcome soft landing! Mulberry Flooring has a great selection of contemporary and traditional rugs available for sale and to order in a range of sizes. We are also suppliers of Crucial Trading and Alternative Flooring, who both offer a bespoke rug service from their extensive range of wool and natural flooring

Discovering Hythe & Kent Through

Instagram

What is Instagram? Wikipedia defines Instagram as, “a mobile, desktop, and Internet-based photo-sharing application and service that allows users to share pictures and videos either publicly or privately”. It all started as an app to enhance the pictures taken with your mobile phone and became popular thanks to very cool filters giving nice effects to pictures in only a few seconds. In fact, this very handy app is so popular that it has created the fourth most popular social network in the UK, after Facebook, YouTube and Twitter, boasting approximately 14 million users around the country. How does it work? You simply create a free account and start sharing your pictures of your day, your work, your travels, anything really! One particularity of Instagram is that you cannot share links with your pictures like you would do on Facebook or Twitter. But you can add long narrative captions and most important of all: hashtags. Hashtags allow you to organise content and track discussion topics based on keywords. So, if you wanted to post a picture about the London Eye, you would include #LondonEye in your comments underneath. The same thing can

the above is based on users sharing their pictures for others to enjoy. Using this app, I was able to get to know new places around Hythe and all over Kent. I started researching anything following the hashtags #hythe #hythebeach #hythehighstreet #kent #kentfood #kentcoast and #explorekent. I got curious about life a bit further than Hythe and Kent’s borders with hashtags like #folkestone #folkestonecreativequarter #dungeness #cambersands #rye and #canterbury. Some of

“When you are new to Hythe, as I am, Instagram is a great way to discover things to do.” work with brands, books, events, destinations, occasions (such as #christmas2017) and so on. This allows you to see more pictures on the subject you are interested in. Therefore, Instagram becomes quite a useful tool to plan your holiday in a new destination or even discover what is happening in your area - this coming weekend for example.

Using Instagram in places old and new When you are new to Hythe, as I am, Instagram is a great way to discover things to do. This includes places to visit, restaurants to dine at, events to attend and local brands and businesses to support (by finding out where to discover them at local venues and events such as farmers’ markets or crafts exhibitions). All of

8 | www.hythelife.org.uk

them can take you a while to go through as there are thousands of pictures being shared on the subject. So I tend to also follow more global accounts such as @explore_kent to help me find my way around Instagram’s social network as it can easily become addictive and time-consuming! On top of being a friendly community, Instagram provides local businesses with a new way of marketing their own services and products. Using this social network will allow independent business owners, such as shops or restaurants, to advertise in a more informal manner. This is simply achieved by posting a picture once or twice a day and answering comments that users leave and makes for an excellent way to reach new clients. There are

plenty of local Hythe businesses on Instagram so take a look for yourself and follow the ones you like the look of! Finally, don’t forget to follow and tag @hythelife!

3 tips to make your Instagram experience a safe and enjoyable one 1. Make sure you're comfortable letting the photos and videos you share represent who you are to a wide audience, such as your family, employers or clients. The esafety adage taught to teenagers is that you shouldn’t share anything on social media that you wouldn’t be happy putting in the local newspaper! 2. Instagram has both unfollow and block tools which you can use to control the posts you see and share. You can also remove other users’ comments from photos that you have shared. If you feel that a user or post violates the Community Guidelines, you can let Instagram know instantly by clicking the ‘Report’ button. 3. Make sure you know whether your account is public or private. When you set your posts to private, anyone who wants to see your posts, followers or following list will have to send you a follow request first.

tips

New year, new career? for a killer CV

January 6th 2018. The Quality Street have been polished off, the festivities are over for another year and there's probably a Christmas-shaped dent in your bank balance. No wonder, then, that this is the day of the year on which most people search for a new job, according to research by recruitment website, Monster. So how do you win the position of your dreams?

One answer is to have a killer CV. A 2015 survey found that today’s employer spends an average of just 9 seconds looking at a job applicant’s CV before making their decision. That means that, in the time it has taken you to finish reading this paragraph, your CV could have already been put in the bin! Whether you are looking for your first job, returning to work after a break, changing career or seeking promotion, put your CV through the health check below to help make that dream role a reality in 2018. 1. Tailor your CV to the job rather than the other way around Talk to any professional recruiter and they’ll tell you that this is the most important part of CVwriting. It requires time and effort to tweak your CV to every job you apply for but it’s worth it. By highlighting the skills and experience you have that are specific to the job description and organisation, you’ll instantly gain an advantage. 2. Provide evidence for what you say Whenever you mention a skill or achievement, make sure you support it with a concrete example. “I'm a highly skilled salesperson” sounds like blagging. “I'm a highly skilled salesperson responsible for generating 20% of the company’s new business in 2017’ sounds impressive (so long as it is true, of course!). 3. Make sure formatting is clean, crisp and consistent Your CV should be formatted consistently and appropriately throughout. Divide into sections

10 | www.hythelife.org.uk

with clear and relevant sub-headings and use bullet-points rather than big, unwieldy paragraphs. 4. Never go beyond 2 pages Succinctness is the name of the game in CVwriting. Employers want a quick, accessible and punchy hit of information. As a general rule, if you’d need to staple a hard copy of your CV, it’s too long. 5. Get the tone right You want to stand out for the right reasons. For most sectors, that means adopting the most formal, professional voice you can muster. Use positive, dynamic language to describe your experience and achievements: ‘motivated’, ‘managed’, ‘successfully’, ‘drove’, ‘led’ and ‘launched’ are all words that inspire confidence in your ability. 6. Keep the jargon to a minimum Employers don’t have time to translate gobbledegook, insider acronyms or impenetrable jargon: old-fashioned plain English is the clearest and best form of expression to get your point across. 7. Think about the font Readability should be your primary goal. That means that Comic Sans need not apply for this job: it's best to stick to a classic font, such as Times New Roman, for a professional look. In terms of font size, don’t shout by using a large font nor require your reader to dig out their microscope by dipping below size 11.

8. Avoid listing exam grades in full This is a pet hate for many employers. Unless you are applying for your first job, the chances are that you have plenty of relevant and interesting experience and skills that should take centre stage on your CV. One way to get around this is to create a catchall statement that highlights core subjects. ‘9 GCSEs, including English Literature (A), Maths (B) and French (B)’ would do the job. 9. Make your hobbies work for you Put yourself in the mindset of your potential employer and show how your interests make you a good fit for them, rather than just creating a list. It’s generally useful to have employees who can drive, so mention your driving licence if you have one. Ditto IT skills. If you speak another language, that’s also likely to impress. 10. Finally – check, check and check again! The English language is a funny old beast with plenty of idiosyncracies and grammatical eccentricities - but that doesn't excuse errors. You're aiming to present yourself as a polished professional with excellent attention to detail and written communication skills. Typos are easy to make but often less easy to spot: ewe can create a peace of text that will get passed a spellcheck tool but witch is knot actually correct. Finally, if you feel you need added assistance, consider employing a professional CV-writing/proofreading service who will be able to help you.

Message from the Town Mayor Councillor Paul Peacock My Mayoral year has continued to be very busy and I have represented Hythe at a huge variety of functions. Of course there was also the story of a new Mayoral robe to hit social media but I hope everyone now has the true facts and understands the need to look after all aspects of Civic regalia. I have never been a supporter of real fur, in fact I believe most councillors understand the strong feelings this stirs up and I look forward to seeing what new designs might be available. The last time I wrote this column Otterpool was headlining the local news and now we are dealing with the proposals for Princes Parade. It is clear that our lovely town is cherished for its character and uniqueness and when big development is planned on historic open spaces it makes us all realise how easy it is to lose areas we have taken for granted for so long. Talking about open spaces, there are plans to reseed the wildflower meadow at Eaton Lands and plant a community orchard. If you haven’t yet visited this little gem do go and have a look. Controversial issues always attract residents to sit in at council meetings but it would be great to see the public come regularly and get to hear about all the small things planned . Although I am Chairman of the Council another part of my role is to raise money for local charities. As some of you will be aware I work at Hythe Ranges and was able to invite other Mayors to a tour of the Redoubt Fort followed by a NAAFI lunch. This raised a good amount which will be distributed next year and all the Mayors enjoyed the experience. I’d like to thank the MOD and Landmarc Support Services for giving me the opportunity to arrange this. I hope to see you all at Hythe’s late night Christmas shopping event. The traders put their heart and soul into this – not just to promote sales but to give the town a special evening. Please support them. We are part of a vibrant, caring community and that’s why Hythe is so special.

Venetian Fete On Wednesday 16th August, thousands of locals and visitors lined the banks of the Royal Military Canal for the town's spectacular biennial Venetian Fete. The usual array of colourful floats created by local businesses, clubs, community groups and other organisations - all with varying creative themes - took part in the waterborne procession, cheered and clapped on by an appreciative audience. The procession of the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports as they led the procession, and the VIP enclosure of the mayors of the Cinque Ports, looked particularly resplendent in their ceremonial insignia. Sponsored by Hythe Town Council, the Fete remains one of the biggest events to be staged in the town, attracting a huge audience from the town itself, across Kent and beyond, with many overseas visitors enjoying the spectacle, including those from Hythe’s twin towns of Berck and Poperinge. The floats made two processions along the canal, the first in daylight followed by another later in the dark when the vessels were brightly and cleverly illuminated. There was also a fantastic firework display to add to the spectacle of the evening. The event dates from 1890 when Edward Palmer, the founder of the Hythe Reporter newspaper, suggested a parade of illuminated boats on the canal; on Wednesday, August 27 of that year the first parade took place. Palmer coined the name ‘Venetian Fete’ when he reported the event in his newspaper, the name stuck and it has been used ever since. It is organised by the Hythe Venetian Fete Society and the Council is pleased to support them via the form of grants, as it does with the equally successful Hythe Festival which takes place again in the summer of 2018. Both the Fete society and the Festival committees are always on the lookout for volunteers and help in organising what continue to be successful events for the town year after year

Give peas a chance If you’ve got an allotment in Hythe, you’ll know that you are part of a community of more than 150 plot holders. Everyone has an opinion on how to grow things, and that’s part of the joy of allotmenting. You’ll never be short of an opinion on the best way to grow your vegetables, and as you’ll be adjacent to other like-minded growers, you will likely find yourself so busy chatting that you’ll spend more time leaning on your spade than digging with it. Things are forever changing, and allotments change too. The council wants to work with allotment holders to ensure that we change things to suit future needs. That’s why we are developing a new booklet “Guidance for Hythe Town Council allotment tenants”. Hythe Town Councillors will have to approve it before it becomes policy, but before that, we want to hear more comment from allotment holders. The document is not yet complete, and to ensure your views are properly represented to councillors, please let us know what you think. If you want Hythe allotmenteers to be fit for the future or if you would like your own plot on one of the four sites in Hythe, then please read the draft document at www.hythe-tc.gov.uk/allotments and then write to us or email us at admin@Hythe-TC.gov.uk

Twinning Getting to know your neighbours isn't easy. Our European neighbours speak a different language, eat different food, and live in a different culture. And you can feel completely out of your comfort zone. In late October, we could renew friendships with the mayors and twinning associations from our twin towns. We were delighted to welcome Bruno Cousein, mayor of Berck in France and Christof Dejaegher from Poperinge, Belgium and their and their respective twinning associations. The host was Paul Peacock, town mayor of Hythe with Kevin Howell and our twinning association providing the administrative support.

So why do we still have twin towns? After all, people can travel all around Europe easily, cheaply and freely these days. It’s because town twinning is a long term relationship. It grows and it can flourish. When it's good and healthy, it puts its people

first. It introduces them to new experiences and new friends. It helps us all to meet, mix and get along. The mayors and councillors of all the towns give it their support, but the relationship is about the people in Hythe the people in Berck in France and the people in Poperinge in Belgium – not councillors or committees. It's ours – yours – to mould. After we leave the EU it will be more important that friendship between the people of the towns continues.

How town twinning started Town twinning, as an official relationship-builder, started in Europe after the second world war. The idea was simple: repair damaged relationships between countries previously at war. Find towns with similarities and pair them. Then encourage people from these areas to meet, mix and get along. That's why town twinning is such a good and important thing. We in Hythe and our twins share a common history, a common DNA. We're twinned for a reason and that reason is entirely positive. Please pay our friends in Belgium and France a visit. They'll love it if you do.

Owning a puppy That gorgeous bundle of energy that you carried home some months ago has grown and grown into the boisterous young dog that greets you every morning. Hopefully the house training has gone well with only the occasional accident now. obedience training should be well under way with the basics of sit, stay and walking to heel, and the all- important recall “come back” working well (most of the time). Now is the time to reinforce this training with consistency, clear instructions -both verbally and by body language - and the rewards of love and affection. Feeding can be reduced to two meals a day and moved away from the puppy life stages to the young dog or junior categories. Exercise should be regular and increasing in line with age and breed. Veterinary care should be targeted at parasite control. Worming is best carried out monthly to protect primarily against the endoparasites (roundworms and tapeworms). The wormer used must be effective against lungworm. This potentially lethal parasite is picked up by dogs from ingesting slugs and

ectoparasites (fleas and ticks). Whilst fleas are very common, ticks are much more serious as a potential source of disease. They can carry and transmit a number of serious diseases. These include Lyme disease and babesiosis. Lyme disease is of particular concern in hotspots such as the New Forest but is regularly reported throughout the country and its incidence is increasing dramatically. It can also be contracted by people, although they cannot directly be infected from their pets. The former England rugby player Matt Dawson is leading a

Babesiosis is a life-threatening disease to vulnerable dogs with mortality of up to 60%. There are several effective products which act as either repellents or insecticide and are very effective at controlling these parasites. Do see your vet to obtain accurate advice in selecting the most appropriate products.

The woven fabrics in the Claribel collection offer ideal choices for upholstery in a similar palette. A particular favourite is the block print of an illustrated painted flower. Displayed

Images shown above are part of Nina Campbell’s latest collection. The colours are quintessentially English with a beautiful mix of classic hues. Signature colours are navy and white, which together make a classic sophisticated look, as well as coral with beige for a softer, neutral tone. One of my favourite fabric and wallpaper collections this season is by one of the world’s most respected and influential interior designers: Nina Campbell. The English designer has clients who include the Duke and Duchess of York, Ringo Starr, Rod Stewart and the Capital Hotel in Knightsbridge.

Nina Campbell is renowned for her contagious wit and sense of style; her designs appeal to both young and old and sit well in both contemporary and traditional interiors. She creates successful fabric and wallpaper collections which are internationally distributed by Osborne and Little. Her collections this season are Les Reves, Les Reves wallpaper and Claribel. Les Reves includes a palette of coral, duck egg, indigo, bitter chocolate and orange. The wallpapers in the companion collection, also

as a small-scale trellis, it is a simple, uncomplicated and pretty design with French vintage appeal, named after Matisse's early lover, Camille, who was also the mother of his first child. You can see this on the navy and blue image, available in fabric and wallpaper. My other favourite is the Belle île wallpaper, a mid-scale diamond stripe with uneven, painted horizontal lines. The refreshing range of pastels and one bold colour is named after an island near Brittany that was much loved by Matisse. This wallpaper design can be seen on the coral and beige image; it would be lovely in any room in the home and is striking enough for a feature wall.

Paws for Thought: The Dogs who Make a Difference

It's said that a dog is man's best friend and that laughter is the best medicine. Put the two together and you get pretty close to the essence of the work of a Pets as Therapy dog. Two local PAT dogs visit the Saltwood Care Home every Thursday, providing comfort and companionship to its residents. Hythe life met them, and their owner, liz lohse, to find out more. Meet Darcy and Tessa. Bright-eyed, waggytailed and impeccably mannered, they greet visitors with the warmest of wet-nosed welcomes. Two more companionable canines you would be hard-pressed to find – which is all the more remarkable considering that Tessa had been rescued from a dog-hoarder in Hungary, where she had been kept in appalling conditions. It’s their good temperaments – sociable, gentle, obedient and reliable - that make Darcy and Tessa ideally suited to their role as PAT dogs. Every Thursday afternoon, they take it in turns to don their smart Pets as Therapy coats before making the short journey from their home in Stanford to visit the residents of the Saltwood Care Centre. It's something they love to do, as their owner, Liz Lohse, explains. “When it's time to leave home, they are both fighting at the door as to which one is going with me. They jump in and out of the car and go in with their tails wagging.”

A typical visit Each visit takes between an hour and an hour and a half and Liz spends time with residents in the communal common room as well as popping in to see those who might be unwilling or unable to leave their own rooms. For residents who have owned dogs in the past, interacting with Tessa and Darcy provides obvious pleasure, as well as an opportunity to relive memories of their own pets with Liz: “There's one lady who absolutely adores them and used to have dogs of her own. When they come in, she'll say, 'Oh, it's my beautiful babies!' and Darcy

has a routine with her: she'll come along, plonk her bottom on the ground and give her both paws to 'shake hands' with.”

Sometimes, just getting a smile or a reaction is enough For others, the positive effects of the dogs' visits are more muted, but no less important. Those in the latter stages of dementia, for instance, will often not respond at all but then, says Liz, “you'll suddenly see a smile and they might reach to touch the dog. They perk up. You get smiles, you get interest. They sit up and lean forward.” Sometimes, just getting a smile or a reaction is enough. The restorative effect that the dogs' visits have upon residents' wellbeing is clear to Amanda French, the Activities Coordinator at Saltwood Care Centre. “When the residents see

the strict sense, the therapeutic benefits of touching or stroking a friendly four-legged friend are being increasingly recognised by the medical profession. Research has shown that interacting with a dog or cat can lower blood pressure and reduce the amount of the stress hormone, cortisol, in the body whilst raising levels of oxytocin and endorphins – the 'feel good' hormones. Pet power, it seems, really can make a positive difference to body, mind and soul. With around 4,500 PAT dogs now in service alongside just over 100 cats, the movement is clearly gaining traction, with hospitals, hospices, nursing and care homes, and schools benefitting from visits from therapy animals. PAT dogs come in all shapes and sizes, but must be over nine months old, have lived with its owner for at least six months and pass a

“When the residents see the dogs, it's just magical. Quiet residents come of their shell and it's just a lovely, serene moment” the dogs, it's just magical. Quiet residents come of their shell and it's just a lovely, serene moment. It's the thing some look forward to most all week. It's bringing the outside in and something to the rooms of the bed-bound.”

The therapeutic benefits of pet power It was this recognition of the value of interaction with animals within an holistic approach to health and wellbeing that led Lesley Scott-Ordish to found the Pets as Therapy charity in 1983. Whilst the role of PAT dogs isn't medicinal in

temperament and behavioural assessment. Once cleared to volunteer, dogs like Darcy and Tessa can begin their valuable work supporting some of the most vulnerable members of society, and spreading a little joy to those who need it the most. As Amanda French puts it, “We just really appreciate Pets as Therapy; there's no more to it than that.” For more information about Pets as Therapy, visit www.petsastherapy.org or telephone 01494 569130.

Shop Local Make a Difference

by Sophie-Charlotte Chapman @thewainstonescottage

With Christmas just around the corner, shopping for presents is definitely on our to-do list. Going to supermarkets, malls and chain stores is part of our relentless yuletide habit as it seems to be the easiest option - but it can be a quite a charmless chore. What we tend to find in these places is a wide range of mass-produced items with nothing particularly special or unique on offer. You’ll be buying objects that are, most of the time, manufactured hundreds, if not thousands, of miles away from your home. On the other hand, buying local and handmade products will make a difference. It will not only surprise your friends and family at Christmas, but also shows a touch of the place where you live, especially if you travel a bit to celebrate these holidays. Buying from craft sellers or local artists is purchasing a piece of their work. Each of their products is loaded with their own story.

26 | www.hythelife.org.uk

Handmade items are always one of a kind and the person receiving them can only feel lucky and privileged to be offered such a gift. Meeting with the artist or the shopkeeper, who will tell you all about the presents you choose, is also part of the fun. To feel the connection between the creator and yourself growing as you talk during the purchase is very personal, whereas in big and crowded places it is too often all too impersonal. Furthermore, by shopping at the small businesses around you, you become a real actor within your local economy. You actually support entrepreneurs and English companies in their

development. You allow them to become sustainable. Hythe and its surrounding area is full of small businesses waiting for you to come and visit them for your Christmas shopping. You will meet fantastic artists, craft sellers and independent shopkeepers with wonderful gift ideas to satisfy everybody. Don’t forget to stop between shops in one of the several local cafes, pubs and restaurants where you will be able to enjoy fresh local produce. And while you are at it, don’t forget to share your purchases with others online (see our article on Instagram) by naming the places and brands you discovered here in Kent!

Hythe Life’s Reverse

Advent Calendar Want to get involved? Here’s how to create your Reverse Advent Calendar:

The traditional Christmas image is one in which gifts and grub predominate: a time of tables laden with festive food and a mountain of presents under the tree. But that’s not the reality for all our local residents. For those struggling to make ends meet, the festive season is often marked by despair and desperation rather than fun and feasting, with ‘In the Bleak Midwinter’ resonating far more deeply than the jolly cheer of ‘We Wish You a Merry Christmas’. What is a Reverse Advent Calendar? A traditional advent calendar starts on December 1st and provides a little something – whether in the form of a chocolate, toy or traditional picture – to open from behind a window each day until December 24th. A reverse advent calendar follows the same basic principle but has

could be a tin of fruit, a bag of rice, a jar of coffee or a box of sweet treats, although the items must be non-perishable. You can drop off your box with us at HL HQ, or at the designated drop-off points in Hythe, and we’ll harness the reindeers and fire up the sleigh so that we can spread some community cheer this Christmas.

“It’s community spirit in action: a way of showing those who may feel unhappy, lonely or forgotten about at Christmas that we are thinking of them.” giving, rather than receiving, at its heart. It’s community spirit in action: a way of showing those who may feel unhappy, lonely or forgotten about at Christmas that we are thinking of them. All you need is a cardboard box, a few little extras in your weekly shop and a big heart. Each day in December until 21st (it should be 24th, but that’s leaving it too late to distribute the boxes in time for Christmas), we want you to put something into your box for the Shepway Foodbank. It

28 | www.hythelife.org.uk

It’s a great way to involve yourself in our wonderful Hythe community; you can create a box as an individual, family, workplace or group. It’s also a physical reminder to us all to be grateful for what we have and a fun project to reinforce the true meaning of Christmas to children. We hope that you are as excited about the idea as we are: it’s a small act of kindness in the general scheme of things but it could make a big difference to one family’s Christmas.

1. Grab a cardboard box or bag-for-life. You, or your children, can decorate it in a more festive fashion if you like! 2. Each day until December 20th, pop one item into it. Children can always help to decide which goodies to include or, even better, use some of their pocket money to contribute to the box. Please do make sure that you follow the ‘rules’ below of what we can and can’t accept, however. We would hate your good work to go to waste. 3. Drop off your box by noon on December 21st. You can bring it to our HQ at Saltwood General Stores or watch out on our Facebook page for information about other local drop-offs. We will ensure that it arrives at the foodbank in time for Christmas.

Spiced harissa

lamb shoulder

with Moroccan couscous and mint yogurt Ingredients The Lamb:

Moroccan couscous:

Mint yoghurt:

1 lamb shoulder

500g cous cous

500ml natural yoghurt

1 jar harissa paste

500ml orange juice

2 tablespoons smoked paprika

1 tablespoon smoked paprika

4 tablespoons mint sauce

2 large onions

150g mixed dried fruit

4 carrots

½ bunch fresh coriander

3 lamb stock cubes

1 shallot

½ bunch of rosemary

3 spring onions

4 tablespoons honey Salt pepper

1 bulb of garlic Salt Pepper

Method Season the lamb with salt and pepper. Heat up a large pan. Add the lamb to the hot pan and colour on all sides then remove and set aside on a tray. To make the stock: 1. roughly chop the carrots and onions, add them to the same pan and cook until brown. 2. Add the harissa paste, smoked paprika and bulb of garlic (just slice it in half) and cook out for 2 minutes. 3. return the lamb shoulder to the pot, add the rosemary and cover with water. 4. Bring to the boil, remove from the heat and cover with greaseproof paper and foil. Place in the oven at 170C for 5 hours. To make the couscous: 1. Sweat the shallot down with some olive oil and the smoked paprika and cook for 1 minute. 2. Add the dried fruit and the orange juice and bring to the boil over a medium heat. 3. Pour the orange juice mix over the couscous, making sure you keep stirring until it is all combined. If it’s a bit sticky, add some olive oil to break it up. 4. Add the chopped coriander at the end and season to taste with salt and pepper. To make the mint yoghurt and finishing touches: 1. Mix all of the ingredients together and season to taste. 2. once the lamb is cooked, pull the meat off the bone, then sieve the stock to take out all the bits. 3. Add the stock to a pan over a high heat and reduce by half to intensify the flavour. 4. return some of the stock to the pulled lamb little and often, until you get a nice wet consistency. This will ensure that the couscous will soak up some of the juices. 5. once again season to taste. 6. Place the mint yogurt on top of the lamb to serve, then garnish with finely chopped spring onions and coriander to finish.

Hythe’s Hidden Heroes:

Greg Boarman Greg Boarman, from Seabrook, has organised the Saltwood Boxing Day run – now in its 43rd year - for the past thirty years. The run has raised over £200,000 for charity over the course of its history and every year, over 1000 locals and visitors take to the three-mile course to burn off those Christmas calories and blitz the festive hangover!

The run started in 1974 as just a fun way to run off the Christmas hangover. It was organised by local villagers in Saltwood and there were under twenty runners. Last year, there were about 1250 and there have been as many as 1500. It’s just got more and more

forgotten that! After about four or five years of running in it, I was asked to help to organise the race. One of the organisers was my good friend, Micky Wire. He passed away from cancer and I promised I’d keep it going – and here we are, thirty years later. I go out on Christmas Day to mark the course. My wife comes as well to help me: we put out the tape, the poles and arrows. We’ll be up there for four or five hours: I go up at about 10am and appear at some point later to have my Christmas lunch! On Boxing Day, I’m at Saltwood Green by 7:30am. I used to call the race, ‘mud, sweat and tears’. It’s proper cross-country: you have to climb over trees and get muddy. You’re not allowed not to! Fancy dress is encouraged as well, so long as you don’t mind it getting wet and dirty. Once, we had four ladies from a local doctors’ surgery who dressed up as a pantomime cow and went round the course like

“It’s proper cross-country: you have to climb over trees and get muddy. You’re not allowed not to!“ popular. There are various plaques around the run dedicated to people who ran the race for years but are no longer with us. On race day, I hang medals up over the plaques. It’s a way to remember them. Terry Davies, one of the original runners, was very sadly diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease. That’s why, every year, we raise money for the Motor Neurone Disease Association. At the beginning, it was just ‘throw a few quid in a pot’ but now it’s a lot more organised. We’ve donated to various organisations, including Medical Detection Dogs and several cancer charities. We’ve also given money to the village hall and the parish church in Saltwood. We probably donate £6,000 -7,000 per year and in total, we’ve given over £200,000. This year, we’re raising money for SERV Kent, the ‘bloodrunners’ charity, after it was featured in the summer edition of Hythe Life. I got involved initially as a runner in the race, when it had been going for about four years. My quickest time was 19.02: I’ve never

38 | www.hythelife.org.uk

that, which was hilarious. The Folkestone Rowing Club is good for fancy dress as well. Last year, they did an Only Fools and Horses theme and turned up with a cardboard threewheeled car which they ‘drove’ around the run.

One of the most successful runners the race has seen was Martin Beagley, nicknamed the ‘flying postman’. He was a local postman who won eight times in total, and four years in a row. Steve Heard, the Olympic 800m runner, used to come down to run the race because he had been brought up here but he was always beaten by the flying postman! It became a standing joke. We’re very lucky to be supported by the local community. I used to organise the race on my own but now I have help from a professional race management company called Nice Work. The Saltwood villagers always turn out to cheer on the runners. Jenner Contractors generously sponsor the event and the Channel Rotary Club help with the marshalling. I couldn’t do it without them. We’ve said we’ll have a very special do on the 50th anniversary. It’s seven years away so not that far off. There aren’t many runs that have been going for that long. I’ve got to keep going for that! Want to enter this year’s race? The race starts at 12pm on 26th December from Saltwood Village Hall. Advance entries can be made at the Trophy Shop on Hythe High Street and Blue Shield Insurance in Prospect Road, Hythe. On the day registration starts at 10am at the village hall.

Let’s Talk Trees If any of you have been on a country walk this autumn, you’ll have noticed the trees have been particularly stunning with their orange, red and golden brown leaves. For those who prefer to stay indoors, many of our gardens have contributed to this beautiful, autumn scene - the view from my lounge window has been just as spectacular. If you’re wondering why we get these beautiful colours just before the leaves fall, here comes the science bit: Trees contain hormones, just as we do. During the spring and summer months, when trees receive plenty of daylight and warmth, hormone levels within their leaves remain steady and so, the leaves stay attached. When autumn arrives, however, temperatures drop and the days shorten, which causes a decrease in hormone production. This triggers cell changes within the leaf structure which eventually lead to the leaf breaking away from the plant and either blowing off in the wind or falling under its own weight. A bare tree is an inactive tree, and that means that it needs less energy to survive the winter, as well as ensuring that it can preserve moisture in its branches and trunk. In the winter months, then, the trees are dormant and so this is an ideal time to prepare them for the following spring. It is important to routinely care for your garden trees if you want them to prosper and stay healthy. Here are a few tips:

40 | www.hythelife.org.uk

1. Prune/pollard Pruning is essential in order to maintain the health and aesthetics of a tree and should only be undertaken by someone with a good understanding of trees and shrubs. Pollarding is a type of pruning where the upper branches are removed back to the trunk, which reduces the trees growth. Both of these involve the removal of any dead branches, which could spread disease, or any branches which cross and rub against each other. Where this happens, bark is often damaged, which in turn can cause fungi to grow. Fruit trees (except plum) should be pruned in winter to improve the chance of fruit for the following year.

2. Crown reduction and thinning This reduces the overall size of the tree. Its purpose is to improve stability, shape and in some cases, to extend the life of the tree. Crown thinning helps a more mature tree in strong winds as it improves the airflow through the tree. 3. Planting If you want to enjoy the shade of a tree in summer and the golden colours in autumn, early winter is the ideal time to plant trees. It is better to do it before the weather gets too cold and in time to give the tree roots time to establish and take hold before spring.

Canal Life

Canal banks have always had a certain appeal on a warm summer’s day, with the slow-paced and relaxed lifestyle on offer. So much so that an estimated 15000 people have now left their life on dry land behind and taken the plunge into canal living.

Whilst this isn’t an option for we Hythe residents, we still embrace our canal bank in all of its glory, whatever the season. The tantalising sight of summer is signalled annually by the arrival of the canal boats, ready to see swarms of locals and tourists alike attempting to impress with their rowing prowess, with the occasional few never quite mastering the technique and spending a lot of time getting to grips with the water weeds. Our canal tells stories. Our canal has a history. Our canal makes memories. We have festivals on it, we watch fireworks from it, we have chat packed strolls along it and we fish from the side of it. But what about the other, hidden side of canal life? The Royal Military Canal was originally built in 1804 as a defence strategy in response to the threat of Napoleonic invasion. There were so many trials and tribulations along the way that by the time that the canal was fit for purpose, the threat it was responding to had long since dissipated. The canal became something of a national embarrassment, in fact, as at a cost of over £200,000 (an astronomical amount of public spending by Georgian England standards), the government needed to find a way to recoup this. It was then used for everything from trade and produce transportation to running a public barge service between Hythe and Rye, but nothing came close to recovering the money spent to build it. With technological advancements reaching new heights, trains became quicker and cars more accessible, so the public side of life on the waters came to a steady halt.

42 | www.hythelife.org.uk

Today our canal serves a very different purpose, in that it is now a successful flood prevention mechanism. Excess water can be drained at both the sluice in Seabrook and the Iden Lock sides of the canal if winter flooding is a risk. The Environment Agency and the local councils look after our canal but it is also monitored by the canal warden (or canal bailiff). We met up with the current warden, Paul Musson, to find out a little bit more about the hidden side of canal life. The canal warden is appointed, in a voluntary capacity, by the Cinque Ports Angling Society and the warden’s primary role is to collect ticket money from non-member fisherman. But, as we discovered,

“Our canal waters are brimming with fish and wildlife.” the job entails a lot more than meets the eye. Paul patrols the canal at varying times of the day, seven days a week. He frequently comes across people needing guidance about the fishing rules and regulations, as well as visitors looking for directions - with the odd bit of history thrown in for good measure. Our canal waters are brimming with fish and wildlife. The varieties of fish range from the expected - carp, pike, tench and bream - to the

slightly more unexpected trout. One of Paul’s additional jobs is to make sure that all of the fish are safely returned to the water. He regularly educates new anglers about the correct way to unhook different fish types. As the waters are so full of other species, he has to use his knowledge to show people how to unhook more unexpected catches. His most recent encounter was showing a fisherman how to unhook a terrapin who had strayed into the path of the fishing hook and succumbed to the tasty bait waiting to hook the fish; something he’ll be sure not to repeat! As well as the fish, Paul regularly sees kingfishers (the best place to spot them is by the eponymously named Kingfisher Avenue in west Hythe), mink, cormorants and grass snakes. He has even spotted swimming squirrels who had attempted over- ambitious and somewhat misguided leaps between branches, and had to quickly learn ‘squirrel paddle’ to get back safely onto dry land. One of the biggest, unsung roles of the canal warden is the work he does to help the children and young families who are newcomers to the world of fishing. There is so much to learn and potentially, enough equipment to baffle any unseasoned amateur, so advice from an expert is always a welcome addition. He will also show those with very little equipment how to make the most of what they have, putting them on a closer par with those who have the crème de la crème of fishing paraphernalia. Paul is more than qualified to offer this advice as he has won the Cinque Ports Trophy (an award given out by the Cinque Ports Angling Society) more times than anyone else, so he is quite the pro! More and more young people are passing up the lure of the computer game and taking to the water to learn a new skill, spending time with their families and knowing that there is such help at hand is invaluable. The diversity of the job is what makes this so rewarding for Paul and he hopes he will be doing this for many more years to come.

by Paul Apps UA

The adventure continues In this article I want to show you a studio demonstration in oils of a sunrise in the skies over Dymchurch Bay.

For this painting, the panel measures 24” x 24” and is made of 6mm MDF, which is strong enough for the size and will not warp over time. The preparation of any panel for oil painting or, indeed, other mediums is always three coats of white Gesso. This can be applied with a roller to achieve a very smooth surface. Alternatively, to add texture, use a brush within the panel. Personally, I favour a brush and use thick random strokes, avoiding as much repetition as possible. Once these layers are completely dry, I give a very light rub with 240 grit sandpaper, which just takes off any high points and softens the coarseness of the surface. Now I know what’s on your mind: why on earth am I painting on this very bright red ground? Personally, I usually paint upon a coloured

keeping my paint in a dry manner. By this I mean that it is almost from the tube, as using paint this way with little or no added medium allows you to control the paint and work on. I use Phthalocyanine Blue, Titanium White and Jaune Brilliant and start scrubbing in the sky, getting warmer as I descend. In stage two, I continue painting the sky and suggest the sun’s position in the composition. You’ll see that I have added a variety of warm colours as I approach the horizon, such as Cadmium Yellow Deep, Magenta and Cadmium Orange, and these begin to make their presence felt. I save my brightest colour for the sun. This is normally Titanium White with an added touch of a yellow, in this case Cadmium Yellow Deep. It was J. M. W. Turner who taught us that the

that I have used a larger brush (¾-inch filbert) for the entire work so far. This allows for broader brush strokes, which are more suggestive of the reality. I add more assertive reds and umbers towards the horizon. You’ll see I’ve missed some red ground in the middle foreground of the sea; I liked how it looked so left it as it was, just adding further light. The deep warmth of the sea will contrast beautifully with the cool foam surf in the immediate foreground. In stage four, you’ll see the final finished painting, framed in a coloured frame made exclusively for this work. I refined the overall look with many small touches and flicks using the same brush and colours outlined above. The cool surf is punctuated with many foam holes (for want of a better term), which suggest the

“Now I know what’s on your mind: why on earth am I painting on this very bright red ground?” ground and such a ground can be either warm or cool in value (tone), but is normally a mid-value. That said, every so often using an extreme surface colour can be exciting. This Cadmium Red primary colour is like fire under the paint. You will see, in the final image, small specs of red popping through. These appear randomly where I have missed paint, but visually they unite the work, creating harmony and warmth throughout. In stage one, I loosely draw, with a brush, the sky and horizon level of the sea at Dymchurch,

addition of a yellow excites the eye and made whites brighter. Remember, you cannot buy a tube of light (I only wish it were possible), so you have to create light in your work. Lastly, I used a mix of ultramarine blue, magenta and umbers to begin suggesting the heavy rain clouds, which give contrast to the sky. Stage three is now getting interesting as I develop many aspects of the sky and the sea. A variety of marks are made using the paint mixes that I have already outlined. It’s worth noting

water’s movement and the explosion of the wave upon the sandy shore of Dymchurch Bay. This painting was my feature work at the recent Sea Edge Exhibition at the Tin Tabernacle, Hythe. It is now available at my gallery. If you study the final image you’ll notice how the small touches of red subtly unite the overall look of the painting. Until next time, enjoy your art!

Get Fit, Get Outdoors

How to Keep Healthy and Motivated in Winter By Louise Hagger

Winter is here, it’s dark early, it’s getting cold and much harder to stay motivated to keep yourself fit and healthy! In the fitness industry, I find that every year class numbers diminish as we get on the Christmas countdown. People hunker down under piles of food, booze and parties, almost creating a human hibernation… however, we are not bears and do not need extra fat reserves! There is always time to make a change to your body and fitness. EVERY workout counts but you can't count the ones you don't do and that will only make January even tougher. Have fun and party but please be kind to yourself, keep working out and don’t give up. Remember: the best summer bodies are made in winter. Here are my five benefits of cold weather workouts:

1. Sunshine Our bodies need vitamin D, the ‘sunshine vitamin’, which is difficult to obtain through diet. The easiest source is bare skin exposure to the sun. In the winter it is much harder to boost our levels so it is really important to get outside and get moving. Vitamin D aids absorption of calcium, which in turn will help make bones and teeth

Getting outside, away from the stale air and heating systems, is so important - even if it is just for some of your lunch break. The air outside is much healthier; let your lungs breath some of our special Hythe sea air rather than other peoples’ bugs!

3. It Feels Good Exercising outdoors is invigorating and energising. When we get our hearts and lungs pumping, our bodies release endorphins, which in turn release the chemicals serotonin and dopamine. These can help to reduce anxiety and depression, keeping us feeling good and happy. The best way to prepare and recover from those Christmas parties!

“Regular exercise strengthens your immune system so it can fight off viral infections and bacteria.” stronger. Studies have shown that it can also help to suppress appetite and assisting weight loss, as well as supporting the immune system and enhancing our mood. How good does it feel to come in all rosy-cheeked after a brisk winter walk or a run? Exposure to sunshine plays a role in combatting SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder), also known as ‘Winter Depression’, as well. A daily outdoor workout will enable you to take in more sun, release feel-good endorphins and give your brain a break from the daily grind, reducing stress. My sunnier classes definitely get more smiles!

2. Stay Healthy Since running regular outdoor bootcamps and walking my dogs daily - whatever the weather I cannot actually remember the last time I was ill. Regular exercise strengthens your immune system so it can fight off viral infections and bacteria.

46 | www.hythelife.org.uk

4. Balance Out the Treats On average, most people put on at least a couple of pounds over Christmas, so make up for those extra treats by increasing the amount of exercise you do. You may find that after a few workouts you naturally make better food and drink decisions too. If you do have a few days of less healthy eating, don’t worry or give up - tomorrow is always a new day! 5. Social Benefits Make plans with a friend or join an exercise group or class: you are more likely to stick at it if you are ‘in it together’ and won’t want to let each other down, plus it’s more fun. It only takes three times to make it a lasting habit so get something in your diary now and stick to it. If you are a runner or love walking, then exercising with a friend is also safer as the nights close in.

A few simple tips for exercising safely in the cold: • You will need a longer warm-up to avoid injury • Make sure you hydrate before, during and after your workout; this is just as important in winter as it is in summer • Remember that there is no such thing as the wrong weather, just the wrong clothes • Wear layers that you can peel off as necessary (three layers) • Wear a hat and gloves • Wear reflective clothing so that you are visible to drivers • You may like to cover your face with a neck buff to warm the air before it hits your lungs • Beware of ice and running on very hard, frosty ground. You might need sturdier trainers • If you have asthma or a heart condition, you should consult your doctor

Four Steps to a Healthy Back

By Charles Bruford

Most cases of back pain could be avoided if we all cared for our spines a little more. If you are getting the ‘odd twinge’or finding that everyday jobs, like doing the ironing or washing up, are causing a lot of discomfort, then there is obviously something not quite right. rather than waiting to see what happens before you do anything about it, here are a few simple exercises that we can all benefit from:

exercise 1: Knee to Chest Starting Position: Lie on your back on a table or firm surface. Action: Clasp your hands behind one thigh and pull it towards your chest. Keep the opposite leg flat on the surface of the table. Maintain the position for 30 seconds. Switch legs and repeat 5 times each side.

exercise 2: Pelvic Tilt Starting Position: Lie on your back on a table or firm surface with feet flat on the surface and knees bent. Action: Push the small of your back into the floor by pulling the lower abdominal muscles up and in. Hold your back flat while breathing easily in and out. Hold for five seconds. Do not hold your breath. Relax and repeat 5 times.

exercise 3: Hip Rolling Starting Position: Lie on your back on a table or firm surface with both knees bent and feet flat on the table. Action: Cross your arms over your chest. Turn your head (trunk) to the right as you turn both knees to the left. Allow your knees to relax and go down without forcing. Bring knees back up, head to centre. Reverse directions. Repeat 5 times each side.

exercise 4: Cat and Camel Starting Position: Kneel down on the floor and assume the "all fours" position. Keep your head straight so that the gaze of your eyes is toward the floor. Action: Slowly allow your trunk to sag as far as you can so that your back is arched. Do not pull it down. But let it relax as you lift up your face towards the ceiling. Then round your back up at the waist as far as you can by contracting your lower abdominal muscles as you lower the top of your head toward the floor. All motion should be initiated from your lower back. Relax and repeat 5 times. Even when your back is not in pain, repeat these exercises daily to keep it healthy. As with all exercises, if any cause pain then stop doing them. If your back is still painful, always seek professional advice.

HOMELESS FOOTCARE PROVISION east Kent Foot Care are working together with Action on Homelessness in Folkestone to provide a foot care service this winter period with the aim of turning forgotten feet into ‘happy’ feet. East Kent Foot Care provides a comprehensive foot care service to clients both in clinics and domiciliary settings within the areas of Folkestone, Hythe and the surrounding villages. We have come together to work alongside Action on Homelessness in Folkestone to extend this provision to aid homeless people who would like to take advantage of this service. East Kent Foot Care will be running drop-in services over the winter period located by Folkestone Central station and the United

by prolonged wet conditions as well as wounds. Anyone with any sort of infection will be referred to a local GP for medication or creams. Rain, in particular, affects homeless people long after it stops as there is nowhere for them to dry shoes and socks, and so wet footwear stays on, resulting in macerated foot conditions which can become infected and malodorous. East Kent Foot Care are proud to be able to offer our expertise to this initiative and have received donations of long, warm socks that we can give to the people wanting to use this

The pirates are all extremely intelligent, treacherous and selfish (especially the captain). The captain always proposes a distribution of the loot. All pirates vote on the proposal, and if half the crew or more go "Aye", the loot is divided as proposed, as no pirate would be willing to take on the captain without superior force on their side. If the captain fails to obtain support of at least half his crew (which includes himself), he faces a mutiny, and all pirates will turn against him and make him walk the plank. The pirates start over again with the next senior pirate as captain.

What is the maximum number of coins the captain can keep without risking his life?

Cannons starting to fire After a shaky start to the season the Cannons are beginning to fire. They are inching their way up towards the play-off places and are progressing in the Velocity Trophy (the League Cup). They have a jam-packed programme of league games over the next three months and a real chance to consolidate their position and challenge for promotion outright, or through the end-of-season play-offs.

Tynwald Residential Home In 1948, Hythe old People’s Welfare Committee was founded to provide the elderly of Hythe with Christmas parcels, coal, a meeting place and an ambition to provide a home for the elderly in Hythe. Funds raised over the years, however, mainly from the Hythe Venetian Fete Society and the Venetian Club, were never sufficient until, under the will of Mrs Kate Alice Butterworth, a sum of £5,000 was bequeathed on 18th May 1959 to Hythe Old People’s Welfare for this specific purpose. With £1,000 from the Hythe Venetian Fete Society, £1,000 from an anonymous donation and the Hythe Rotary Club providing furniture, Tynwald was purchased and opened on 12th July 1961 by the then MP Sir Albert Costain. Tynwald was established as a registered charity on 27th June 1961, “to provide a residence or home for such old people who are either resident of Hythe town or surrounding district, or who are related to a person or persons resident in Hythe, as the committee in their discretion think fit, provided preference

shall be given to persons resident in Hythe town.” In 1964 Mrs Lucy Aimscombe left the balance of her estate, approximately £6,000, to Tynwald and with £2,000 from the Old People’s Welfare the east wing was built. This added ten rooms to the home. In 1971 a Miss Young left the residue of her estate, approximately £7,500, and with a donation of £6,000 from the Hayward Trust, a matron’s flat and assistant matron’s flat were built. In 1998, as these flats were no longer used, they were converted to three more resident rooms, an administration office and staff training room, making a total of twenty-four resident rooms. A further extension was made in 2014 which increased the number of residents' rooms to twenty-five. In 1975 Age Concern was formed and took over the Old People’s Welfare and Tynwald

separated from this, even though some trustees were on both committees. Tynwald is a secure and comfortable home set in a pleasant hillside position. It is managed by a committee of Trustees who have lived in Hythe for many years. They voluntarily bring a wealth of experience and expertise to the home, giving their time for the benefit of the residents.

HL Sports ATHLETICS Folkestone Running Club who have kindly supported her and encouraged her throughout the year. She is also extremely grateful to her sponsors from Physiologic Physiotherapy in Hythe, who are giving generous support with her fitness and race kit. Emily is now looking forward to training hard through the winter months so that she can come back stronger and faster, ready to take on some new and exciting challenges in 2018! She has big plans for the next couple of years, stepping up to full Olympic distance for the British Championships next year and aiming at the even longer middle-distance Iron Man events in 2019. “

Emily Chambers In our last edition we featured young Saltwood Triathlete Emily Chambers. The 16-year-old was just about to travel to represent Great Britain in the Under-20 Female Sprint category at the Triathlon World Championships in Rotterdam. Emily made it round the course safely to finish in 18th place: a fantastic achievement, given that she was competing against athletes up to four years older than her. Emily’s dad, Steve, has kindly provided us with the following report of the race: “There were 50 athletes competing in the under-20 female category representing twelve countries from around the world, including teams from USA, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and Europe. Emily was representing Great Britain in a team of eleven athletes. The race was held in the heart of Rotterdam next to Erasmusbrug Bridge. The race began with a 750m swim in Rotterdam docks, followed by a 20km flat but ‘technical’ bike course that took the riders over Erasmusbrug Bridge along the waterfront and onto long sections of paved Cobblestones and tight corners. The race finished with a 5km run in the picturesque Het Park, next to Rotterdam waterfront and overlooked by the Euromast Tower. After three days of rain, the sun came out on race day and most of the course was dry. Emily had a great swim and was well placed after the first transition. She rode extremely hard in the bike leg and was tucked ‘wheel to wheel’ in a small group of four riders. With just over 1km to go, Emily was forced to take avoiding action when the leading rider in front made a mistake on a cobblestone section and crashed heavily. In avoiding the fallen rider; Emily hit a raised curb with her front wheel which instantly burst her front tyre. However, she maintained control and determinedly finished the final kilometre on a flat! She ran strongly in the final leg, though, and regained the lost positions to finish the race in 18th place in a time of 1:18:23. Overall, it was a fantastic experience and a very encouraging result. Emily would like to give sincere thanks to everyone at Hythe Aqua and

HL Sports CRICKET

Saltwood CC End of Season Awards On September 9th Saltwood Cricket club held their annual end-of-season awards’ ceremony at The Red Lion. The following awards were made, which Hythe Life were very pleased to sponsor: Saturday Batsman of the Year - Ryan Hall Saturday Bowler of the Year - Brice Dempster Sunday Batsman of the Year - Ben Allon Sunday Bowler of the Year - Teddy Easthope Players' Player of the Year - Ryan Hall

The hotly contested “White Hart Hythe Tea of the Year 2017” went to Jonathan Brady and Arthur Leaver, who pulled out all the stops for the last match of the year, knocking Brice Dempster off the top spot. Commiserations went to Joseph Libby who picked up the Wooden Spoon award for the lowest scoring tea! The Club also awarded an honorary life membership to Ian Oakes. This was very much deserved as the club has been transformed since he became Chairman. His hard work and selfless dedication has led to a vast improvement of the club’s facilities, which in turn has led to on-field success in recent years. The Colts section is booming and senior cricket continues to improve. Ian has sourced and funded new nets, new wickets, new scoreboard and new playing/training kit for all members via grants and sponsorship. As head groundsman he has also managed to constantly improve the wicket.

We are pleased to announce that we will once again be sponsoring Saltwood CC’s senior team. We wish them another successful season in 2018 and look forward to reporting on their winning exploits in the next editions of the magazine. The club are still looking for sponsors for the 2018 season and all enquiries should be sent to ian@saltwoodcc.com
