Protection. It’s in our nature.

Foreword On behalf on Gail and I, we would like to warmly welcome everybody to the Pure Friesian Open Day. We take great pride in farming our 300 cow pedigree registered “Raheenarran” herd with the assistance of our herdsman, Andrew Doyle. Bryan took over the family farm from his parents at the age of 19 and recognised that dairying was the enterprise to drive best returns. He graded up the herd to pedigree status utilising IHFA services. At Raheenarran, Bryan states “That the Black & White breed provides ample genetic diversity, variation and proven performance to enable us achieve excellent results. The lifetime yield, excellent fertility, with a regular calving pattern provides for an easy-care herd having tremendous longevity and valuable cull cow at the end.” Our herd is sustained on grazed grass farming on land which is 900 feet above sea level. and our success is acknowledged in our annual Co-Op performance report. The empty rate is (7-11%) on 300 cows, 90% six week calving rate (top 5%) with 3.66% Protein (top 10%) . In 2017, annual grass growth exceeded 17 t/DM/ha with some fields growing 22 t/DM/ha. Fresh calvers were turned out to grass on 20th of January of this year. Tremendous grass growth and utilisation, in addition to quality silage production provides for an annual modest supplementation rate of 400kg/cow. The prominent cow families in the Raheenarran herd include: Audrey, Discovery, Dairine, Bloom, Aileen, Bridie and Polly. Bulls from Raheenarran have entered national AI through NCBC and Dovea: MEB Sochar (RHS), BCB Sochar (RVJ), both from the Breda family. Many people have helped to make this day possible and I would like to thank all involved, including; Pure Friesian Club Officers and Committee members, our sponsors, De Laval and FBD. It is a source of support to be involved in the local Carlow / Kilkenny Club, the Friesian Club and Kildalton Discussion group (under the care of George Ramsbottom) to meet like-minded breeders in the locality through field evenings and information meetings. Bryan’s parents are to be acknowledged and thanked for their hard work and dedication throughout their lifetime such that the farm at Raheenarran has always been farmed to a high standard. Thanks to IHFA CE, Charles Gallagher and staff for the assistance with the Open Day. The five youngstock animals offered for sale are listed at the back of the catalogue. We hope you all enjoy the day and wish you the best of luck with your animal if you make a purchase. Bryan & Gail

Congratulations to

Introduction and welcome to the Daniels Farm (Bryan, Gail, Shannon and Toby) Farm:

Cow Numbers;

The home block is the milking ground. The outside blocks are used for grazing the replacements and for silage production. Milk is supplied to Glanbia. The farm currently employs two additional full time labour units, Andrew Doyle (Assistant Manager) and Brian Greene (Student).

Farm History: Dairying The farm has evolved overtime. In 2007, the farm was operated as a mixed farm with a combination of a dairy and beef enterprise. At the time a business plan was drawn up and the decision was made to expand dairy enterprise to maximise output on farm. As a result the herd has grown in cow numbers over the last decade to become solely a dairy farm. This is outlined in the table below. Cow Numbers: Year

Growth in cow numbers has being matched with both an increase in land base but also more grass grown on the farm. Outlined below is the grass production pattern over the last 10 years. There has been up to a 50% increase in grass production on this farm.

Farm Performance Currently there is a stocking rate of 2.5 cows/ha on the milking block as a proportion of platform is taken out for silage annually and the overall farm stocking rate is around 2.73 LU/ha. There is a key focus of output and profit on this farm which is achieved from high grass utilization. The Daniels fed 500kgs meal/cow in 2017 and the rest of the herds’ diet was made up of grazed grass and grass silage. The farm sold over 440kgs milk solids/cow to GLANBIA in 2017. The target is to sell 480 - 500 kg’s of milk solids/ cow from a predominately grazed grass diet. Along with high grass utilization, good herd genetics has also a role to play in the high performance of this farm. The Daniels strives to continuously improve the genetic merit of the herd. The average EBI of cows in the herd is €132, with next generation of heifer replacements average €172. The calving performance of the herd ranks within the top 10% of GLANBIA suppliers, achieving an average calving interval of 365 days in 2017 and the six week calving rate of 90% in 2017. Compact calving is key to profitability where the Daniel’s can get high numbers of cows to grass early in the spring, which increases the value of milk sales and reduces feed costs. Getting high volumes of cows out to grass in February is first key step to maximising grazed grass in the diet annually. Having very good grazing infrastructure in place is essential to maximise the amount of grass eaten on the farm.

Grass Management The Daniels herd strive to maximise milk solids production from low cost grass based spring calving system. Bryan recognises the importance of focusing on each of the key areas of grassland management. These include soil fertility, grazing infrastructure, sward composition (reseeding) and grass measurement. Together these four pillars have played a huge role in achieving higher levels of grass production and utilisation on the Daniels farm. The farm was a monitor farm under the Glanbia joint programme for 3 years from 2005 to 2007. The Daniels began measuring grass in 2005 and have continued to do so ever since. The farm is walked on a weekly basis. Last year the farm was walked and grass cover was measured 35 times. This information is then entered into the PastureBase Ireland web-based programme. Pre-grazing covers and cover per cow are 2 key figures that are used when making decisions on farm. Grazing Performance on the Daniels farm in 2017

The average number of grazing’s being achieved was 10 including the paddocks cut for silage as well as grazing. Maximising the number of grazing’s achieved on each paddock is a very effective method of increasing farm grass utilisation. Every extra grazing/paddock achieved increases annual grass DM production by 1.5 t DM/ha PastureBase Ireland enables the Daniels to keep track of grass growth per paddock, the number of grazing’s per paddock and the quantity of grass being consumed at each grazing. This highlights poor performing paddocks (that can be earmarked for reseeding) and deficiencies in grazing management. John Kilboyle
