Welcome to the fall issue of IBB at Home! My favorite season is finally here and the holidays are around the corner. The cooler weather always inspires me to prepare for dinner parties and houseguests. Hosting and entertaining means refreshing my home to welcome friends and family! As a designer and someone passionate for interiors, I love customizing pieces for my home and my clients which have a unique touch and fit for the design of the space. Whether it is a custom fabric, contrasting welt cord or nail head detail, each touch makes a piece your very own. I know you’ve walked into many furniture stores and seen rows of the same pieces in the same fabric – a generic sea of brown. Well, at IBB Design Fine Furnishings you’ll never see the same item twice on the store floor. Our team of 33 designers visit markets across the country, and then they sit down and take the time to design special pieces for our store which are available for immediate sale. No need to wait for a special order which can take 6-10 weeks. Walk in and enjoy instant gratification with design eye candy throughout our store. Having these custom pieces in-stock and ready for delivery makes a fall refresh easy and quick, so everything can be ready to welcome your holiday guests. Whether you are looking for an entry way update, a new sofa or a complete home makeover – we have you covered. Call us or swing by to meet one of our talented team members and we’ll help you get started. Enjoy IBB at Home. As always, it’s full of tips, trends and our team’s favorite recent projects.

Our fall 2016 issue is one of my favorite issues and happens to be our largest issue to date. I could not be more proud of #teamibb. There is so much design eye candy in store for you, so sit back, relax and get ready to be inspired! Our cover story takes you on a tour of my mom's (a.k.a IBB's founder, Beth Rafferty) new home. We had so much fun working on her remodel and then furnishing the downsized space. A gorgeous green has us swooning and we're showing you ways to incorporate it into your home. Our designers dish on their favorite trends, while Arden Willis from our sister company, Sunrise Blinds, provides tips on child and pet-friendly window coverings. Jane Leupke deals the skinny on our new drapery program which allows our clients to purchase custom draperies at up to 40 percent off. James "JT" Turner discusses design for large-scaled rooms and Pam Hood offers advice for texture to your interiors. My daughter, Jaylie, reveals the plans for her little sister's new bedroom in her Kids’ Corner column. You won't want to miss the fabulous color palette and unveiling of a recent model home project for Highland Homes. Inspiring worlds collide as the connection between fashion and interior design is covered by IBB Designer Michael Reece. Speaking of fashion, one of our favorite stylists, Jeanette Chivvis, shows us fall's hottest fashion trends. Fall is also the perfect time for a dinner party, and the culinary geniuses at Jasper's share an amazing dinner and cocktail recipe. This issue has everything you need to be inspired to live beautifully. Cheers to a fabulous fall and making memories with your family and friends.

WHAT ’S ON YOUR NIGHTSTAND?

Get to know Susan Medlin

AS SHE SHARES WHAT’S ON HER NIGHTSTAND. Your nightstand is one of the places in your home which is sure to be a reflection of who you are! I opted for a small-scale writing desk instead of a traditional nightstand by my bed. I love the extra space and flexibility it offers, plus it’s the perfect spot to journal or write thank you notes. I’ve always been a huge reader, so a beautiful lamp at just the right height for reading in bed takes priority. Stacked below my favorite candle are a few books I’m anxious to read, including Finders Keepers by Stephen King and All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr. While I would love to have fresh flowers on my nightstand, my allergies simpl y do not agree! Instead, I have a beautiful faux Hydrangea, my favorite flower, arrangement sitting alongside a gold box which stores pens, stamps and the TV remote. My Bible rests beside a teddy bear I picked up at a bed & breakfast when my husband, Philip, and I visited years ago. The bear reminds me of my favorite childhood toy. Two personal pieces of art hang over my desk. When Philip and I travel, we enjoy finding special pieces of art from around the world. I’ve paired a watercolor of a beautiful home in New Orleans’ Garden District with an oil painting we found in Hawaii. It’s a couple on a street in Lahaina, entitled Dinner Reservations and we like to imagine we are the couple in the painting.

DIVIDE & CONQUER: HOW TO FURNISH A LARGE-SCALE SPACE Designing a large-scale room can be a challenge, but if done well, offers a functional and beautiful space in your home. So, if you opt for a large living area where your whole family can gather and entertain guests, consider how to divide and conquer the space.

areas and then accessorized with a collection of antique books. I nestled a pair of leather ottomans under the table which can easily be pulled up to either side of the room for additional seating.

Identifying several functional “zones” within the room is the first thing to determine; such as a conversation/ sitting area, entertainment and media, writing space, and even a bar setup.

In a large space, don’t be afraid to pull furniture away from the walls to create an intimate setting. The back of chairs or sofas are easy to use for visual boundaries. Here I used the back of Barcelona chairs as a border for the space, which allowed me to fill the empty walls with a stylish bar setup and étagéres.

Distinctively defining the space into two areas is key. You can visually divide the room by separating it in the middle with a daybed, long table or center table to create a boundary. In this space, I selected a beautiful marble-topped center table to create two separate

By defining these separate areas in your spacious room, you are able to utilize normal-scale furniture and appropriately customize the space for your lifestyle.

DESIGNER TIPS

BY PAM HOOD IBB Designer pam@ibbdesign.com

DESIGNER TIP: WHEN A ROOM IS MISSING LAYERS OF VARIOUS TEXTURES, IT CAN SEEM FLAT AND ONE DIMENSIONAL. THE KEY TO A BEAUTIFUL, WARM AND INVITING HOME IS ADDING DIFFERENT TEXTURES!

TransforM WITH TEXTURE

Texture adds dimension to a room and makes it more interesting, cozy and inviting. Don’t be afraid to mix up textures either – sleek with rough, smooth with heavily textured, or soft with coarse.

3. Accessories introduce shiny elements of glass, mirrors, acrylic or ceramics for a little sparkle. Throw blankets and pillows layer in a cozy element to any chair or sofa.

Here are 5 ways to add texture to a space:

4. Furniture in distressed woods or weathered painted finishes add texture with a relaxed feel. High-gloss woods, glass and metals offer a more formal and sophisticated look.

1. Area rugs add texture with patterns or color. Jute and sisal rugs insert a rough texture for a casual look and feel, while wool and silk rugs provide a soft luxurious texture. 2. Window treatments like woven shades are a rustic and unexpected look. Drapery panels in colorful patterns or a solid fabric with trim add extra depth and interest to your windows.

5. Wallpapers have a ton of texture! Embossed papers, grass cloth and even faux suedes can add stunning dimension to a space.

FURNITURE

As the weather begins to cool and we look forward to fall, inspiration is around the corner at the fall fashion runway shows. The relationship between fashion and interior design has been one of longevity and harmony throughout the ages. Both born of necessity and function, but evolved into a form of expression, creativity and beauty.

Furniture and fashion are both influenced by art, architecture and nature. What we consider attractive and stylish, reflects significantly on what we value and consider beautiful. There are a range of fashion designers who have successfully transitioned into interior design including Oscar de la Renta, KATE SPADE NEW YORK, Larry Laslo, Calvin Klein and my personal favorite, Ralph Lauren. Beyond interior collections by fashion designers, many interior designer who design their own collections draw from the runways as well. Alexander Julian has a signature look with a masculine touch and Interior Designer Kelly Wearstler’s collection a feminine flair. You see fashion elements throughout interiors and fashion inspiring furniture more and more.

COVER STORY

INTERIOR DESIGN Beth Rafferty Shay Geyer REMODEL Lonnie Gray Custom Homes PHOTOGRAPHY Dan Piassick

A COLORFUL NEW beginning Almost a year after IBB founder, Beth Rafferty, lost her husband to cancer, she decided it was time to downsize. Beth found a 3,400-square-foot, one-story home just around the corner from her daughter, Shay Geyer, and her family and knew it was the perfect place to start a new chapter. Beth and Shay worked together to fully remodel the spacious open floor plan, with Lonnie Gray Custom Homes, taking it all the way down to the studs. Every inch of the home received a fresh new look.

ENTRY

A Jim Rabby sculpted oil painting, a piece purchased by Beth and her husband in Santa Fe more than 20 years ago, sets the tone for color in the entry. Embroidered linen drapery panels covered in a bright floral pattern balance the entry by framing the windows. Lonnie Gray's expert team of craftsmen added a stunning element by installing a rug design in the wood.

IBB AT HOME 23

STUDY

Hermes orange lacquer covers the paneled walls of the study and is one of the first areas seen in the home upon walking in. It is a bold color selection, but happens to be Beth's favorite color and offers a rich backdrop for the furnishings and accessories. A deep purple mohair sofa sits amongst the lacquered bookcases. A writing desk provides a workspace for the room while a fuchsia leather chair plays off of the colorful palette. Embroidered linen drapery panels soften the paneling around the window and bring pattern into the space. The entire home has the egg shaped crystal door hardware which stands out the most on top of the orange lacquer.

IBB AT HOME 25

FAMILY ROOM

This room offers comfortable seating for the whole family and then some. A sectional and chaise were custom-designed for the space. The gray fabric allows for bright pops of color in teal, orange and fuchsia to stand out and the nail head pattern across the base adds a nice design detail. A pair of swivel rocker chairs were upholstered in a teal patterned cut velvet. Brass ottomans covered in orange leather provide extra seating or a place for guests to kick up their feet. The large artwork above the sectional supports the color scheme while metal flowers add dimension to the wall around the art installation. Hermes orange cashmere drapery panels frame the long wall of windows in the family room. Beth had a salt water aquarium designed for her built-ins which was an instant hit with her two granddaughters.

IBB AT HOME 27

DINING AREA

The dining area features a 96-inch dining table and provides plenty of seating for friends and family. An orange banquette was used on one side and is another favorite spot for the granddaughters. A herringbone patterned rug design was used in the room to define the dining area between the open kitchen and family room.

IBB AT HOME 29

KITCHEN

White quartzite countertops and a three-dimensional basket weave marble backsplash were used to keep the kitchen light and bright, and provide a neutral backdrop for vivid accents of color. Since Beth has a talent for cooking, a true chef's kitchen was at the top of her wish list. A large stainless steel single bowl chef sink from Kohler was selected which includes a cutting board and other specialty accessories. A metallic gray paint was custom formulated and used on the island, lower cabinetry and vent hood. The stunning hardware is like jewelry for the cabinets.

IBB AT HOME 31

MASTER BEDROOM

A calm and restful retreat was Beth's goal for the master bedroom. Deep teal paired with lighter aqua provides a tranquil feeling in the room. The color palette was inspired by the artwork featuring teal, aqua, lavender and soft green. Rich teal velvet was used for the drapery panels and also quilted for the bed's Euro shams and coverlet. Pattern is brought in on King Shams and a bench at the foot of the bed. The shaped wood bed framed in polished chrome is Beth's favorite piece in the home.

IBB AT HOME 33

MASTER BATH

The spacious master bathroom is a dream in all white Carrera marble. Custom cabinetry allows ample storage and patterned doors add a sophisticated design element.

IBB AT HOME 35

GRANDDAUGHTERS’ BEDROOM

The granddaughters' room was inspired by the navy and white "I love you fabric" used to upholster the walls. Hot pink accents were featured throughout the room at the request of Beth's youngest granddaughter Brooklyn. A custom queen size bed was painted the same as the walls, Benjamin Moore, Symphony Blue. White fabric, hot pink grosgrain ribbon and chrome nail heads were selected to upholster the bed. A desk was placed on one side of the bed as both her granddaughters love to read and draw, while a fun zebra patterned bench with acrylic feet sits at the end of the bed.

IBB AT HOME 37

GRANDDAUGHTERS’ BATH

The bathroom was remodeled using white Carrera marble flooring and white countertops. Contrast was brought in with the Symphony Blue paint on the walls paired with hot pink heart ikat patterned panels for the shower curtain.

IBB AT HOME 39

GUEST BEDROOM & BATH

Metallic grass cloth covers the walls of the bedroom and provides a neutral background. The custom bed is Shay's favorite piece in the room and is dressed in a lavender matelassĂŠ and Euro shams. An orange patterned blanket and accent pillow tie in the room's color scheme based off of the oil painting over the bed. Metallic embroidered drapery panels hang from acrylic and chrome drapery hardware to dress the windows. A wing chair covered in amethyst wool anchors the seating area by the built-in bookcases. The chandelier that was selected makes a gorgeous statement and is like jewelry for the room. Mother of pearl, metal and marble mosaic tile was used on the vanity wall in the bathroom with a pair of pendant lights hanging over the custom silver-leaf vanity cabinet.

HILL COUNTRY FAMILY HOME HIGHLAND HOMES MODEL HOME LADERA SUBDIVISION IN SAN ANTONIO, TX DESIGNED BY IBB DESIGN FINE FURNISHINGS LEAD DESIGNERS: BETH RAFFERTY & SUSAN NEFF

Orange is a color often associated with fall and upon entering this model home, you are graciously greeted by this cheerful hue paired with a sophisticated navy blue. The open floor plan features a spacious family room where we chose to draw attention to the ample seating for which it allows. A sofa, pair of navy blue chairs, and three orange ottomans offer comfortable seating for eight. Navy ikat patterned drapery panels frame the windows and add pattern to the space. The open concept is ideal for large families or those who love to entertain. Â

IBB AT HOME 43

KITCHEN & FAMILY ROOM The orange and blue palette continues throughout as a vibrant contrast to the crisp white walls and neutral finish out of the home. Rich stained wood cabinetry and flooring provide a warm backdrop. The large breakfast nook easily fits a 72-inch table with seating for six. A dark wood dining table complements the wood tones while the light rug provides distinction. We painted horizontal stripes in the kitchen to define a desk area and workspace. It was the perfect way to break up white space while adding character.

IBB AT HOME 45

MASTER BEDROOM The master bedroom is a cozy and restful retreat. A rich navy paint envelops the space and offers the perfect canvas for a white upholstered bed. With blue as the grounding color, the white and pops of orange add interest and depth. White sheer drapery panels dress the windows and evoke an airy feel in the space.

IBB AT HOME 47

KIDS' BEDROOMS Playful polka dots anchor the bed wall in the tween girl's room. An upholstered navy headboard is paired with crisp white bedding with orange pillows and bedskirt. We used a dog print in gray for two shams and tied in part of the theme with dog art on one wall and a family photo over the bed.

The boy's room has a simple and masculine vibe with a play on stripes and simplicity. We painted stripes around the entire room, used a vertical stripe on the drapery panels and a wider vertical stripe on the bedding and bedskirt. The "TC" over the bed personalizes the room and a bookcase allows for ample storage of trophies, books and necessities. Â

WHAT’S

HOT

VELVET GOLDMINE You will feel like a lady of leisure in the crushed velvet trend for fall. It doesn’t have to be heavy, simply throw on a velvet slip dress and a printed bomber jacket for a finished look for fall.

FOR FALL 2016 FASHION EDITOR/STYLING: JEANETTE CHIVVIS (www.chivvistyles.com)

PHOTOGRAPHY: ANTHONY CHIANG (www.anthonychiang.com) MODEL: WHITNEY P. WITH DRAGONFLY AGENCY (www.thedragonflyagency.com) MAKEUP & HAIR: PAIGE ANDERSON FOR CAMERA READY COSMETICS (www.paigeanderson.com)

BIKER BABE

A lot of leather and a little lace takes this trend on the open road. Pair hard leather jackets, pants, accessories with soft tulle sheer long dresses, tops or skirts. Throw on leather tennis shoes to keep it fresh and add a choker for a bit of edge.

APRES SKI/AVANT-GARDE This trend transports you to a Swiss ski village with layers of embroidered oversized jackets, sweaters and coats. Complete the look with fur-lined hats, gloves and scarves. It is the most playful and fun trend of the season.

SHINE ON Metallics in every color are HOT for fall. Mix and match textures and metallics to create an updated feel on this trend. Keep with a casual flat, as it’s the season’s must-have shoe.

PERIOD PIECES

Walk straight out of a Jane Austen novel this season with romantic batik prints, floral laces and rich ma jestic interior fabrics. Don’t be afraid to mix and layer to give it an authentic feel.

MENSWEAR A traditional but updated feel to menswear – plaids and pinstripes call out this trend. Layer a printed button down over a long pinstripe tunic with slouchy cropped pinstripe trousers for a feminine spin. Accessorize with a vintage book bag and white kicks to keep it young and modern.

PUFF DADDY

The puffer jacket is this season’s most functional trend. A fresh approach to wearing it is layered on top of a lightweight jacket to create a color blocking look which feels modern and sophisticated.

COCKTAIL OLD FASHIONED INGREDIENTS 2 ounces bourbon 1 sugar cube 3 dashes Angostura bitters 2 large orange peels In a mixing glass, muddle sugar, bitters and one orange peel. Add bourbon and ice. WHITE WINE-CARAMELIZED LEMON SAUCE • • • • • • • • • • •

2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 1 tablespoon garlic cloves, peeled, roasted and chopped fine 1 tablespoon shallots, peeled, roasted and chopped fine 1/4 cup lemon supremes (approx. 7 lemons) 1/2 cup Banfi Pinot Grigio 1 cup veal demi-glace 1 tablespoon light agave nectar 1 teaspoon whole butter, cold, salted 2 teaspoons French herbs (see recipe) 1 tablespoon cracked black pepper 1 teaspoon kosher salt

In a small sauce pan, add olive oil, garlic and shallots and begin to sauté until a light brown color begins to develop. Once light brown in color, transfer to a 350 oven and slowly roast the garlic and shallots until they are golden brown, soft and tender. Check on them every few minutes to ensure they do not burn. Once garlic and shallots are tender, remove from oven to cool. Once the garlic and shallots are cooled, transfer to a cutting board and finely chop. Retain the olive oil. In a medium sauce pot, add retained olive oil, chopped roasted garlic, shallots and lemons. Continue cooking until the lemons begin to caramelize and reach a deep brown color. NIGHT STANDS AND BED POST COLOR There are a lot of exciting things happening around our house right now! We’ve actually just moved into a new house. The people who bought our previous home bought almost all of our furniture, so we’re basically starting from scratch. This month I’m going to give you a sneak peek inside my mom’s plans for the design of my little sister’s room. Brooklyn is a huge fan of pink so it will definitely have a big presence in the room. My mom is painting all of her molding and doors in Sherwin Williams, Exuberant Pink. Brooklyn’s number one request was to include butterflies, so my mom found a really fun wallpaper to use in her bathroom. She’s also having large butterflies painted around her bedroom. She said the wallpaper was the jumping off point for the room’s design. My mom selected a really cool upholstered bed with a canopy which is a perfect fit for my sister’s princess personality – and, of course, she’s using hot pink fabric. The night stands are black and white with a Greek key design. Drum shade pendants, in aqua, will hang over each nightstand while a

colorful patterned Kate Spade rug will go under the bed. Brooklyn’s drapery will be solid aqua panels with a shaped cornice highlighted by a white welt cord. She’ll also have a little sitting area with a hot pink club chair and a chest of drawers. I love the tassels used as hardware on the aqua chest which my mom designed with one of IBB’s manufacturers. The Barbie mirror might look familiar. It’s the one my mom and grandma made for Brooklyn’s nursery and will look so cute in her new room too. Her bathroom is going to be adorable. The walls will be covered in the butterfly wallpaper and her vanity will also be painted Exuberant Pink. A bow chair from the new Kate Spade collection will be used at her vanity. I know Brooklyn will love her new room. It fits her personality and she’s had so much fun helping my mom with the ideas. You can follow all of the progress this fall when my mom enters my sister’s room into the Fall 2016 One Room Challenge. Stay tuned for the big reveal!
