Welcome to the spring issue of IBB at Home! Our expansion and renovations are in full swing, and they have me reflecting on why I started IBB Design Fine Furnishings 38 years ago. I started my career as an independent designer, and over the years have added to my team one by one. Today, Team IBB has 36 talented interior designers and more than 80 employees. My vision for the business was to offer clients custom-designed furniture that was available immediately. Before we opened our retail store, clients would have to wait eight to 12 weeks for specially-designed pieces. In today’s fastpaced society, I knew we were on to something by offering unique furniture, off the floor. Each of our designers has a say in what we purchase for the store, and many travel the country searching for distinctive and quality home furnishings and accessories. Our retail showroom is carefully curated and refreshed every day. If you haven’t been in lately, there’s lots of design eye candy in store. Of course, if we don’t have the piece of your dreams, we can custom design it especially for you. At IBB Design, we have you covered and look forward to welcoming you to even more square footage of design resources in the coming months. Enjoy the new issue of IBB at Home.

LETTER

from THE EDITOR S P R I N G

Since Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow on Groundhog Day, we were blessed with an earlier spring arrival this year. I love this time of year and all of the beautiful colors that nature graces us with. It’s so inspiring to me! We had new hydrangea and azalea bushes planted in our yard last year, and it makes me so happy to look out our windows and see them. This issue is full of fabulous design tips and ideas from #TeamIBB. Our cover story features eight very different kitchen designs to inspire your kitchen makeover. We’re installing a fun project in Watercolor, Florida this spring, and we’re giving you a sneak peek into part of our design plan. Kay Lewis shares one of her recently completed projects with an updated traditional look. Michael Reese gives us a game plan to get started on our dining room design, and Gwynn Guy shows us what it takes to dress the perfect bed. Jory Gattis Dickinson dishes on organic glamour, and Lauren Macnak showcases her favorite four-poster beds. Rachel Johnston discusses pendant lighting, and Shannon Gidney shares timeless classic design. Our model home feature takes you on a tour through one of Highland Home’s newest models in the Star Trail Subdivision in Prosper. The Neat Method is back again to help us make organizing simple, and lifestyle expert Alicia Wood shares a stunning spring tablescape. True Food Kitchen has two scrumptious recipes for us to try out, and you won’t want to miss all of the fun photos from The Scout Guide Plano & Frisco launch party we hosted at IBB Design. I’m sharing the big reveal from the nursery I designed for my clients during the One Room Challenge, as well as 10 new designs we just added to my permanent botanical collection with The Botanical Mix. Pour yourself an Arnold Palmer and enjoy this issue of IBB at Home. Cheers to spring! Shay Geyer Owner & Designer IBB Design Fine Furnishings shay@ibbdesign.com @designershay on Instagram

LIVING CORAL

Pantone, the global authority on color, selected Living Coral as the 2019 Color of the Year. “An animating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone that energizes and enlivens with a softer edge.”

b.

We love it paired with navy for a beautiful contrasting palette. Combined with sea glass, it offers a coastal vibe. It would also add a vibrant pop of color layered in through accessories in a neutral palette. PAINTS TO CONSIDER: a. Sherwin Williams, Dishy Coral SW 6598 b. Benjamin Moore, Coral Reef 012 c. Behr, Coral Bells 170C-3 d. Pratt & Lambert, Azalea 5-12

TIP: Always sample the paint in your space before diving in and painting the entire room. Just because it looks fabulous in your friend’s home, doesn’t mean it will look equally as stunning in yours. There are many factors which influence how paint looks in a space.

Nothing is better than getting into a comfy bed at the end of a long day. First, start with nice, clean, crisp sheets; white is my personal favorite. IBB Design Fine Furnishings has an extensive collection of various thread counts with decorative edges from bands, embroidery, tapes, trims, pleats and more. Next, select a comforter, duvet or coverlet that you can layer. Typically, I like to use at least two, maybe even three for a more sumptuous look. Down or down alternative inserts can be added to provide that extra fluff. Today, we use so many upholstered beds that have side rails and footboards that a dust ruffle is not

18 IBB AT HOME

always needed. Depending on your bed, however, a nicely tailored dust ruffle can be a great option. I always line the dust ruffle so that no light shows through. Doing so will allow it to hang more elegantly. Decide on how many pillows you want. Personally, I like to layer them in different heights and sizes. The last finishing layer is a blanket that goes across the foot of the bed; that can be a spot to add a punch of color. Visit us at IBB Design, and one of our talented designers will help pull together a fabulous bed that you’ll be excited to come home to. We have so many options available in store.

DESIGNER TIPS

LIGHTEN UP WITH PENDANT LIGHTING

BY RACHEL JOHNSTON, IBB DESIGNER

rachel@ibbdesign.com I @rjohnston on Instagram

Pendant lighting is often thought of as a necessity that brings up all the negative connotations related to the word “functional.” Good news: That doesn’t have to be the case. If you select the right lighting, pendants can completely elevate the design in your home. You know that drab hallway you despise every time you walk down it? Try updating your lighting to a bold, decorative pendant or a thoughtfully designed grouping of pendants. Either option will act as a beautiful piece of art and transform the previously emptyfeeling space to one that feels intentional, ensuring that nothing is competing with or taking away from it.

20 IBB AT HOME

There is one area in everyone’s home that you typically find pendant lighting. It is also the one area I find to be a huge missed opportunity in terms of design – the kitchen island. It’s such a disappointment walking into a beautiful kitchen and finding those same pendants that you see everywhere hanging over the island. Think of the island as a chance to do the unexpected and find lighting that is not only functional, but also makes a statement. Of course, stay within the confines of the ideal scale, finish and drop length for your space.

elegant FOURPOSTER BEDS Styles for every taste.

22 IBB AT HOME

Some designs are simply classic and timeless and allow for a room to have a level of elegance that lasts through the years. A poster or canopy bed will give you just that. By adding a beautiful level of height to the room, these beds create a substantial visual while providing a sleek look. There are styles for every taste. From the carved, turnedleg poster beds to a sleeker canopy, there is something for everyone. If you do not like wood, there are many varieties that combine upholstery, wood, mirrors and even metal or acrylic to give a fashion-forward feel. By mixing a soft fabric with a warm wood, you create a beautiful palette and can play with bedding to create either a masculine or feminine vibe. You can even pair large nightstands with the bed since it has the height to help accommodate the size. If you want a more romantic feel, drape a canopy bed to create a cozy space that you cannot wait to unwind in at the end of the day. Whichever version speaks to your personal style, rest assured we can create a design that will be cherished for years to come.

ORGANIC

Glam Who doesn’t love a little glitz? This is Texas after all, and we always go big in Texas. The question is, how do you incorporate some glamour into a space in a way that packs a punch without looking like Liberace’s formal parlor? First and foremost, when starting any new project or update, you have to consider the architecture of the space you're working in. While I love a funky juxtaposition, you wouldn’t put a crystal and brass chandelier into a log cabin any more than you would place a heavily-carved gold-leafed chest in a contemporary home. That being said, any high-glamour element that has a

24 IBB AT HOME

more natural, organic flare can be incorporated very easily into many spaces! Lamps, sculptures and wall art featuring crystals and geodes work beautifully in spaces all the way from traditional to ultra-modern. The sparkle and light bring the glamour, and the imperfections and unique forms make each piece unique and special. If you’re looking to really go full force, textured wallpapers like this metallic faux bois add a ton of impact! On a smaller scale, incorporating floral motifs such as this metallic embroidery pillow make a statement as well.

BEACH HOUSE

26 IBB AT HOME

The 30A area is a popular vacation hot spot for Dallasites, and we’re so excited to share a sneak peek at our design for this beachfront home in Watercolor, Florida. IBB Design is no stranger to the 30A area; we did our first project in Rosemary Beach more than 15 years ago.

This whole house renovation has been a true labor of love. It was thoughtfully designed with every luxury amenity in mind to ensure a posh and restful retreat at the beach. Walls were torn down, and the square footage was transformed to make the home more open and efficient for family-friendly entertaining and lodging. The new open floor plan kitchen and nook were designed for the large family who loves to cook. A custom Vent-A-Hood® adds color over the range, and the paint was matched for the island. A prep sink in the island offers additional working space for the sous-chef in the family, while the extended curved countertop provides ample seating for guests to gather and converse during meal prep. Counter stools upholstered in a patterned Ultra Leather allow for easy clean up and worry-free maintenance. Refrigerated drawers, a pot filler, wine refrigerator and ice machine are among other amenities the chef’s kitchen offers. Hand-painted wood tiles were custom made to define a rug area for the nook space. A live edge table and bench were commissioned for the dining area. Comfy upholstered chairs in a striped Sunbrella® fabric bring in pattern while also offering a high level of durability. The kitchen pendants over the island and shell chandelier above the dining table act as jewelry for the room. White woven woods were chosen for privacy, and patterned fabric valances help soften the windows; neither detracts from the amazing views. This client has a traditional two-story, red brick home with huge white columns and an immaculate, manicured entrance. They purchased the home because they loved the inside and outside; however, they wanted to elevate the interiors, keeping the traditional design while giving it an updated and fresh look. The walls, ceilings, beautiful baseboards and elaborate crown moldings were painted white. This created an open, fresh and uplifting backdrop. The existing black and white marble floors continue the concept without competing for attention. The crisp contrast of the black and white fabrics married with the more traditional style of the furniture and the black baby grand piano create the wow factor we were aiming for. Four leather and fabric combination chairs encircling a round Lizard Gilt exotic leather ottoman in black, gray and metallic gold invite guests to come in and sit for a while. Keeping the artwork simple with minimal accessories completed the look.

THE SHAY GEYER COLLECTION FOR THE BOTANICAL MIX Our permanent botanicals have been a huge hit with our clients and retailers across the country. We take a considerable amount of time and discernment sourcing elements that provide the most lifelike appearance and quality. The orchids are 3D printed and even feel real. Our preserved moss will never dry out or turn brown. All of our designs require little to no maintenance. If they get dirty or dusty, you can gently clean them with a baby wipe. It’s a beautiful way to get the look of fresh flowers without the expense or maintenance! In January, we introduced 10 new designs to the collection, and they were met with rave reviews. Our Bliss arrangement designed with magnolias and peonies inside a custom metal and wood vessel is a personal favorite and has been a top seller. Look for more new designs coming this spring including hydrangeas, tulips, peonies and roses, all with the same real-to-the touch technology. 32 IBB AT HOME

As colors come and go, the homeowners will be able to change out pillows and accessories without having to change the larger key pieces in the space.

DESIGNER TIPS

I had the privilege of bringing to life clients Steve and Karen Piro’s dream home. Their overall wish was a classic, yet timeless design for their new 10,000-square-foot home in McKinney, Texas. We collaborated with the architects from the ground up, intending to design a space that was both comfortable and inviting. A spacious family room for gathering with friends and family flows seamlessly with the open kitchen and breakfast nook. A sprawling, covered outdoor living area is just beyond the doors aside the two-story stone fireplace. Two sofas symmetrically flank the fireplace. I cozied up a pair of dusty-blue patterned club chairs on an angle to create a bit more of a casual feel rather than lining them up at right angles. Having strong architectural features in the knotty alder beams and fireplace mantle, I chose to incorporate metal on the legs of the cocktail ottoman coupled with a durable, textural crocodile leather in a pop of color. Wanting to remain light and airy, I selected lighter walls and kept the larger pieces in the room bright. The round side table portrays an element of character with its zinc metal top, while the rug brings in texture and softness under foot. The neutrality of this room allows for years of flexibility as design trends fluctuate. As colors come and go, the homeowners will be able to change out pillows and accessories without having to change the larger key pieces in the space. My design intention is always to create a timeless and classic design by using neutrals and textures in a space.

DESIGNER TIPS

HOW TO FURNISH A

dining room As part of my “how-to” series, I’m tackling the dining room now – instead of waiting until the holidays. Many of us only think about the dining room later in the year, as often times we don’t use this room on a regular basis. I find that when we address a room and it makes us happy when we’re in it, we’re more likely to use it! This seems especially true with the formal dining room. Many newer homes have vanquished the formal living room, but most still have a formal dining room. It frequently is right off the entry which makes it impossible to ignore. This room sets the tone for the entire house! Most people replace dining furnishings far less often than any other room in the house, so it’s important to get it right. Here are some simple steps to follow as you embark on this project.

1. START WITH THE TABLE

You have to think of your space; the shape of your room lets you know what works best. A round table looks great in a square room, whereas a rectangular table looks best in a rectangular room.

2. SELECT CHAIRS

You’ll know how many side chairs you need based on the table, room size and shape. Feel free to have some fun by incorporating different host chairs – choose a larger chair with arms that are shaped differently than the side chairs. Also, buy as many side chairs as you’ll want when the table is fully extended, as it can be impossible to add matching chairs later.

3. PURCHASE A RUG

The size will be obvious, as the space will dictate what’s possible here. Purchase a rug as large as the space allows since it will act as the foundation for the room. You’ll want all the chairs to sit fully on the rug.

4. DETERMINE IF YOU NEED SERVING OR DISPLAY PIECES

Will you need a cabinet to display china, crystal or treasures or a buffet to serve food and beverages? These are great places to flank two of your extra side chairs when they’re not in use. The buffet option will need lamps and a mirror or piece of art to finish the look.

5. DON’T FORGET THE WALLS AND LIGHTING

For the walls, consider painting the room a different but complementary color, or use a wallpaper. It is back in full force with lots of great options. Don’t forget about lighting! Have fun with it – there are so many terrific styles to choose from. Find something unique, perhaps a chandelier; it can be the jewelry of the room.

6. COMPLETE YOUR DESIGN WITH DRAPERIES

Last but certainly not least, add drapery panels to create a finished custom look and soften the entire space. The fabric can be bold or discreet, but it needs to work with the other design elements of the room. I hope you’ll give the dining room the priority that it deserves. It’s a great place for gatherings with family and guests. Enjoy!

ASK THE DESIGNERS

WHAT’S A GREAT DESIGN TIP? BY PAM HOOD, IBB DESIGNER pam@ibbdesign.com

TAKE RISKS WITH ACCESSORIES

Use a bold accent color on decorative pillows, throws, porcelains and art to bring interest and excitement to a neutral-colored room. Mix textures in unusual ways, like through a metal and wood box or a rattan and lacquered tray. Give a traditional room a transitional update with cleanline accessories such as lamps or abstract art.

BY MAXINE BURT, IBB DESIGNER maxine@ibbdesign.com @designer_maxine on Instagram

ADD MIRRORS FOR INSTANT LIGHT

When I have a client with a small space like an entry or hallway that needs to be lightened up, the perfect solution is to add a mirror or mirrors. Mirrors, instead of art, add depth and energy to any setting. It’s a perfect way to create a unique look in any home.

36 IBB AT HOME

BY KAREN HOLLOWAY, IBB DESIGNER karen@ibbdesign.com

TEXTURES SET THE MOOD

Textiles are effective design elements to set the mood in a room. Cottons and linens generally make a more casual, comfortable setting; silks bring a luxurious, sleek appeal; leathers create a warm, rich, masculine vibe, and furs and fuzzy textures often evoke warm, cozy feelings.

STYLING WITH TRAYS

Trays are a great way to consolidate and organize stylishly. When entertaining, they can display a beverage and garnishes. On cocktail tables, condense smaller items in a tray – it also will help protect your tabletop. On kitchen counters, group everyday cooking essentials together to maximize counter space.

NURSERY DESIGN The One Room Challenge, created by Linda Weinstein of the blog “Calling it Home,” happens twice a year. I typically use it as an opportunity to tackle a project in my own home, but this time I opted to work on a room for one of my clients. In the midst of a whole-house remodel, my clients Trey and Bliss Brazil discovered they were pregnant with their first child – a baby girl. Bliss requested shades of blush and lavender for the color palette, so we used this stunning blush Schumacher wallpaper as the jumping off point for the room’s design.

38 IBB AT HOME

I planned the furniture arrangement with a daybed so that an adult could sleep in the room when the baby is sick and for when they have extra guests in town. It’s also a great idea to plan ahead for when the baby transitions to toddler years and is out of the crib. I designed the bed in a durable blush fabric with a nail head design around the base and had my upholsterer make it. They never cease to amaze me with their quality and craftsmanship, and they’re so great at bringing my ideas to life! We flanked the daybed with a pair of nightstands and dressed it up with a monogrammed drapery treatment. A comfy swivel rocker, ottoman with Tibetan lamb’s wool and a drink table create a cozy spot for feedings and rocking the baby to sleep. We selected an acrylic bookcase that fits just perfectly between the two windows. It gives our clients ample space to store baby necessities, toys and to display photos. It also offers great storage without taking up a lot of visual space, and it ties in well with the other acrylic and crystal accents in the room.

A changing table is essential for a nursery. I like to use a dresser and place a changing pad on top. Once the baby outgrows the diaper phase, you simply remove the changing pad. I also like to organize all the necessities in a caddy on the dresser so everything you need is easily accessible. Room darkening for daytime naps is an important element to consider when planning a nursery, so we designed functional draperies lined in blackout liner. Handmade butterflies, made by IBB Designer Melissa Catalano, were grouped in an installation over a chic acrylic crib and add color and dimension to the crib wall. A huge thank you to all the sponsors that helped bring my design to fruition for the One Room Challenge! Crystorama, Emtek, Fabricut, Hansgrohe, Hudson Valley Lighting, Overstock. com, Stroheim, The Botanical Mix and Trend. COVER STORY

BEAUTIFUL

kitchens Photography By Dan Piassick

Your kitchen is most likely a room in your home that you spend a considerable amount of time in. It is important to not only make it function properly for your lifestyle, but also to make it a beautiful space where you love to be. In this issue, we’re highlighting a few of our favorite design ideas for kitchens.

GO FOR BOLD!

If you love to cook and love color, opt for a colored range or Vent-A-HoodÂŽ. ILVE, La Cornue, KitchenAid and Viking are just a few of the appliance companies that offer color choices for appliances. Vent-A-Hood can customize a multitude of designs in your choice of nearly 200 color options. A large island is a top request of most of our clients. We love using details like brass or polished stainless steel legs for supports for the seating area. Interior Design by Shay Geyer

IBB AT HOME 41

ISLAND DESIGN

Many people love the idea of inviting family and guests to gather in the kitchen as the cook prepares the meal. We love tailoring the island design to our clients’ needs. One popular design, as shown in this Sanders Custom Home, is a rounded countertop on one end that gives a more intimate and conversational feel. Interior Design by Shannon Gidney

44 IBB AT HOME

NEXT LEVEL PAINT

Paint can take an ordinary kitchen to the next level. We’re seeing no end in sight to the trend in painted cabinetry but are definitely seeing some creative new combinations. Darker colors contrasted with lighter countertops, lighter paint colors paired with darker countertops and bold eye-catching colors on kitchen islands are just a few ways to distinguish your design. In this client’s home, we matched a paint color to the deep blue veining found in their countertops and backsplash to paint the kitchen island and lower perimeter cabinetry. In the adjoining scullery, the cabinetry is a lighter blue gray, another color matched from their countertops. Interior Design by Shay Geyer

IBB AT HOME 45

46 IBB AT HOME

TAKE IT ALL THE WAY!

When tiling your backsplash, take it all the way to your ceiling if you have a break in between the cabinets and the ceiling. It draws your eye up and elevates your look instead of feeling choppy. We also love tiling the front and sides of your kitchen island if it’s plain sheet rock to create more visual interest. Extending the tile design in these ways helps achieve a more luxurious look.

Interior Design by Beth Rafferty & Shay Geyer

48 IBB AT HOME

KEEP IT NEUTRAL

If you’re fickle when it comes to color but would like to incorporate a paint color besides white into your kitchen design, try a deep neutral like we did with the charcoal gray on the island, lower perimeter cabinetry and vent hood in this kitchen. We kicked it up a notch by using a slight metallic sheen with this paint. The neutral finishes allow us to use vibrant pops of color in furnishings and accessories.

CAN’T GO WRONG WITH CLASSIC!

In this client’s home, classic traditional design elements create a timeless look. An antique brick backsplash pairs beautifully with white cabinetry and black countertops. A 60-inch black and brass La Cornue range takes center stage, and crystal pendants hang over the island to complete the traditional vintage farmhouse feel. X-back swivel counter stools are upholstered in a ticking stripe Sunbrella fabric.

MODERN MARVEL

Sleek Italian cabinetry, stainless details and a floating glass bar incorporated into the island are just a few of the details used to design this gorgeous modern kitchen. Slabs of marble cover the wall centered with a stainless and glass vent hood and symmetrical floating shelves. Interior Design by Beth Rafferty & Shay Geyer

FABULOUS FABRICS!

When you study this stunning kitchen, you’ll notice that the material selections are neutral in color. Carrara marble countertops and backsplash, pewter vent hood and light gray islands gave us a neutral background to introduce color with fun fabrics. The beautiful floral pattern used as a window treatment over the sink was used as a jumping off point to pull color through the nook and family room in this open floor plan. We loved the colorful and happy pattern so much that we used it to wallpaper the adjoining catering kitchen. Interior Design by Shay Geyer

KITCHEN

Crisp white-painted cabinetry provides a light and bright feel to the kitchen. The herringbone- patterned backsplash makes a stylish statement, and a stainless steel vent hood offers a modern touch to the design. Spindle-leg counter stools were selected to add seating at the island. A gray accent paint was used to define the nook area in this open floor plan concept. Windsor chairs surround a round dining table and give height to the space. A triptych art installation layered with succulents brings color and life into the room.

ENTERTAINING

An Elegant

S pring T ablescape

Pastels are always my inspiration for our Easter tablescape, as they seem so fresh after a gloomy, cold winter. There are many ways to incorporate the color palette into your spring tablescape. Every year, I find a few items to add to my collection for each season and holiday. Whether it is a set of salad plates edged in pastel colors or simply adding pastel flowers, I love the freshness they bring to my everyday, white place setting. These Juliska petal-pink footed goblets add a great splash of color and shimmer to the table. They are the perfect size for my raspberry lemonade or a champagne punch. Adding a feminine detail with a ruffled napkin or a beautiful pastel ribbon as a napkin ring is perfect for spring occasions as well. Beautiful mercury-glass pastel eggs would add a touch of luminosity and soft color to the table. You can also add flameless candles under them to create a gorgeous glow. I created these pastel centerpieces from flowers I

found at my local grocery store. Using a base of pink and blue hydrangea makes arranging the flowers so easy. I always ask about delivery days for the week and make sure I’m there early on that day to get the best selection. Adding texture and color down the center of the table helps to create a big impact. I simply used pastel colored paper Easter grass as a foundation for the arrangements and sprinkled my collection of papiermâché Easter eggs down the table. You could do this with fresh greenery and smaller flowers as well. I hope this elegant pastel tablescape inspires you to celebrate at home all the fun occasions spring has in store from Easter to graduations and, of course, Mother’s Day. I love being part of the IBB at Home team and am excited to announce this month The Lush List will become Alicia Wood Lifestyle. ORGANIZING

SIMPLE TIPS

for

ORGANIZING Do you ever find yourself putting off your getting organized resolution(s) because you know your current residence isn’t permanent? Or, do you feel like you just don’t have the time to commit to getting the job done? You are not alone! Organizing always seems like a daunting task, but NEAT Method has three organizing tips for spring that will make sure you reach your home organization goals.

TIP #1 – START SMALL

Getting started is half the battle. When you look at an organizing project as a whole, it can seem overwhelming. If de-cluttering your kitchen is much needed, start with the pantry and tell yourself that just purging expired items is enough of an accomplishment for one day. We promise just this small step will feel so good that it will be the catalyst to the large-scale change(s) you are looking for. Before you know it, organizing your drawers, cabinets and counters will be checked off the list!

TIP #2 – PURGE BEFORE YOU PURCHASE

One of the most common mistakes we see is buying a bunch of storage solutions before evaluating what you really need to keep. Take time to purge the clothes you no longer wear, files you no longer need, and/or medicines that are expired before you buy any containers. Also, make sure you take careful measurements prior to a purchase so that you don’t find yourself with organizing solutions that don’t fit your space.

TIP #3 – BASKET & BINS CAN ALWAYS BE REPURPOSED

Even if you aren’t hiring a professional, organizing does require an initial investment. However, you will never regret purchasing neutral baskets and clear bins. These items will be easily transferable from one home to another and will even make getting packed up a breeze. The key is making sure they are neutral so that if they currently store your son’s trucks but need to be used in the garage someday, a quick change of the label is all they need.
