SUMMER
2016
Summer fun is in the air and I love spending this time with family and friends grilling and swimming. This issue we are treating you to an inside look at my backyard makeover project with AquaTerra Outdoors. The outdoor inspiration continues as IBB Designer, James “JT” Turner, highlights the details of another backyard resort he just completed for a Preston Hollow client. #TeamIBB has a ton of fabulous design advice in this issue. Kevin Twitty features a gorgeous family room project he recently completed for a client, and IBB Visual Merchandiser, Meghan Sebren, shows us how to mix metals. We get to know IBB Designer Shannon Gidney, a little better by finding out what she keeps on her nightstand, and a few of our designers highlight their favorite design trends. My daughter, Jaylie, takes you on a tour of the bunk room I designed for her and her little sister. You will also get to look inside a brand new model we recently completed for Highland Homes which showcases a fresh vibrant color palette. Loretta Gillilan of our sister company, Sunrise Blinds, advises us on selecting window coverings to help combat the summer heat and make your home more energy efficient. Speaking of hot, our color story this issue is yellow which happens to be one of the hottest new color trends. We saw a wide variety of furnishings and accessories in this cheerful hue at the spring High Point Home Furnishings Market. We've also got you covered for all of your fabulous summer soirées. IBB Designer & Visual Merchandiser, Mary Helen Peters, shows us how to style the perfect bar cart, and my good friend Chef Tre Wilcox dishes the details of a scrumptious entree and cool summer cocktail. The Everyday Hostess, Kate Jolliffe, offers tips on planning your summer parties. Giving back to the community is a high priority for #teamIBB and we are very proud to have participated in Dwell with Dignity's annual fundraiser Thrift Studio again this year. Get the scoop on the design details of our vignette and peruse the party pics from the preview party inside this issue. Here's to a fun relaxing summer and utilizing free time to get inspired to tackle some of your home's design projects!

Some of our favorite combinations include yellow and cobalt, yellow and white, yellow and aqua, and yellow with black and white. WHAT’S ON YOUR NIGHTSTAND?
Get to know Shannon Gidney as she shares what’s on her nightstand. Other than a glass of water, my nightstand is a pretty, yet eclectic display of items which I love! Over my nightstand hangs a metal handforged, arch shaped mirror with a charcoal rendering of a human figure layered leaning in front. Hand rendering was a passion of mine in design school, so I can’t get enough of a beautiful charcoal sketch. Next, I have a clean-lined lamp with a white drum shade to cast a little mood lighting on a collection of bedside books. A pair of sculptures serve as bookends for my collection ranging from Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff by Richard Carlson and Smart Money, Smart Kids by Dave Ramsey; and of course, the latest issue of House Beautiful magazine. My nightstand wouldn’t be complete without a picture of my sweet Labrador Retriever, Bentley. That frame sits atop a hand-scripted parchment decorative book – I love the beautiful handwriting!
Designer Tip: It is totally acceptable to lean artwork, rather than hang it, if it suits the space best.

outdoor living
AT ITS BEST
It’s the time of year to turn your attention outdoors to create the perfectly styled patio space! The patio is an extension of your home and living space, so it should maintain the same design style. You can accomplish this by utilizing similar design elements, such as a color scheme or furniture style. One of my must-have patio items is an outdoor rug. Rugs are a great way to bring color and style outdoors, and most can be easily hosed down or swept off when dirty. They also help create the essence and framework of a “room”. When it comes to outdoor furniture, make sure it is made with long-lasting materials which will withstand the weather and elements. The sun can break down many materials and reduce their lifespan significantly – so buy high-quality patio furniture. There are so many choices and styles, even those with fully-upholstered options, like the sectional shown here which I used for a recent client project. Your outdoor space should be setup for enjoyment during the day and evening hours. Include candles, outdoor chandeliers and even outdoor weather-proof lamps into your design. Outdoor lighting options have come a long way! Don’t forget outdoor pillows! Pillows are a great way to add color and comfort, and they provide a chance to introduce more trendy attributes to your design.

stylingTHE PERFECT BAR CART
Whether you are hosting a party or using a bar cart as part of your home’s design – bar carts are the perfect accent to add flair to your décor! Here are essentials to creating a perfectly styled bar cart.
FOR HOSTING A PARTY Get organized in style! Use the cart to display glassware and bottles. Twist things up a bit by adding a drop of food coloring to a traditional Tom Collins or Gin & Tonic. Garnish with lime or lemon curls for the finishing touch. Display your garnishes in decorative bowls and frame your cocktail recipe to share with guests. Fresh flowers can play off your color story and add a soft, natural and fragrant touch. Select a beautiful or dramatic vase to display the flowers. Show off your personality and have fun!
FOR SOPHISTICATED LIVING Always be prepared for a house guest by displaying beautiful bottles of sparking water with lemons and limes. Place your favorite lamp and a few picture frames atop your favorite cocktail table books for a personal touch. Fresh flowers bring nature and energy into your home, and your bar cart is a perfect place to display your arrangement. Top the cart off with a signature candle. Relax and enjoy your new favorite display!

MAKE DESIGN UNIQUELY YOURS My design mantra has always been, “Make Design Uniquely Yours.” Taking risks with design is the best way to showcase your personality. Challenge yourself to step outside the box and be surprised how easy it is to create a truly unique space. From contrast welt, to cross-patterned pillows, this fun family room showcases my client’s funky design style and love for color. We left no design stone unturned. The focal point of the entire room is the aqua sectional with pillows for pops of color. We used contrast welting on the wing chair to highlight its distinct shape, and two fabrics on the pair of chairs to allow for an understated design story. With all of the color in the room, it was also important to highlight neutrals. We anchored the room with a charcoal rug centered with a stone top cocktail table and a pair of fur stools. The crowning jewel in the room are the custom drapes which frame the windows and bring a layer of fabulous texture. In the end, this is a unique design for its combination of color, texture, patterns and style.
TAKING RISKS WITH DESIGN IS THE BEST WAY TO SHOWCASE YOUR PERSONALITY.

do’s & Don’ts:
MIXING METALS IS AN EXCELLENT WAY TO MAKE PIECES LOOK ACQUIRED OVER TIME AND ADD CHARACTER, DEPTH AND SOPHISTICATION TO A SPACE.
MIXING METALS Mixing metals used to be avoided in interior design – either selecting gold or silver which made for a very “matchy” look. Thankfully, those days are gone!
Now, mixing metals is embraced as people want to keep old treasured pieces while incorporating new loves, regardless of which metal family they belong. It’s not just your basic metals anymore either – copper, nickel and rose gold are a few shades seen in every aspect of design and fashion – from kitchen finish-outs to jewelry and even makeup. However, it’s easy to go over the top when incorporating different shades. Keep the palette neutral and choose a dominate metal. Try not to exceed three shades to keep the room from becoming visually cluttered, you don’t want to give your eye too many shiny things to focus on. While mixing these lovely hues is trending, it’s also a classic look with staying power.

VIBRANT When my husband and I decided to take on the task of making over our backyard, we knew we wanted to maximize every inch of our yard to create a resort-like atmosphere. After speaking with a few professionals, we chose AquaTerra Outdoors to design and build our pool, outdoor kitchen and cabana. Their firm owner, Tal Thevenot, has a great eye for design and innovation, so we clicked right away. After combining his expertise on pool, landscape and outdoor living design with my expertise on outdoor
Spaces
textiles and furnishings, we ended up with a colorful backyard retreat to enjoy throughout the year with our family and friends.
I wanted vibrant colors from our interior spaces to flow into a Palm Beach vibe in the backyard. For the palette, I selected cobalt blue, yellow, turquoise, black and white. All of the outdoor textiles are woven which holds up much better in the Texas sun.
I designed a pair of swivel chairs and an ottoman in a black and white patterned fabric to use in this space. For end tables, I paired two white garden stools. My husband and I often sit here on rainy nights or when we’re watching the kiddos swim. I love how the aqua planters with spiral juniper add color and greenery to the area.
IBB AT HOME 29
ENTERTAINING Spaces
Since we entertain often, we really wanted to maximize the seating areas with a spacious cabana. I love how AquaTerra made this an elevated area providing great views of the entire yard. For the arrangement, I chose two swinging sofas on either end, two swivel club chairs, and a sofa. AquaTerra also designed benches on either side of the fireplace for additional seating. For me, it was another opportunity to have fun with patterns and colors on the bench cushions and pillows. Then, I selected a man-made quartz material for our coffee table and end tables for durability in the outdoor elements.
The main sitting area is grounded by a fun cobalt blue outdoor rug made from recycled plastic water bottles. The chaise lounges are definitely a favorite spot amongst family and friends. Our dog Roxy really thinks we designed this spot just for her! I used canary yellow on the body fabric with a contrasting black welt cord for the chaises. A fun pattern pop appears on the lumbar pillows. The black and white striped umbrella is one of my favorite elements in the backyard.
IBB AT HOME 31
OUTDOOR kchen Our outdoor kitchen and dining areas get a ton of use. My husband is the king of grilling and we love to have cookouts on the weekends. The kitchen countertops are made of an extremely durable manmade quartz which emulates marble. We love the wrap around design and often use it as a buffet for serving food and drinks at parties. I designed our outdoor dining table to be a beautiful statement piece and a showstopper when transitioning from day to night. It's made from a gorgeous piece of blue onyx which I had backlit, so it illuminates the table top at night. It's certainly a conversation piece and one of my most favorite things to have ever designed. The
chandelier was custom made in a fun turquoise color to add another wow factor in the space. We used swivel counter stools in the kitchen area and brought in pattern with a cobalt blue Greek key outdoor fabric. I often sit here and talk with my husband while he's grilling or watch my kiddos jumping on the trampoline. I love how our kitchen appliances illuminate in blue at night. It's such a fun complimentary detail!
The design truly ended up being the perfect retreat for us to escape our busy lives with friends and family.

WILDRIDGE SUBDIVISION IN OAK POINT, TX DESIGNED BY IBB DESIGN FINE FURNISHINGS LEAD DESIGNERS: BETH RAFFERTY & SUSAN NEFF
ENTRYWAY & STUDY Upon entering this model home, a vibrant Kelly green paint draws you into the spacious floor plan. The green accent paint in the foyer sets the stage and introduces you to the fresh color palette. Black and white are the perfect backdrop to balance accents of bold color and pattern. In the study, a large-scaled black and white striped rug makes a big statement. The room's black walls create drama, while the contrasting white ceiling keeps the space from feeling confined. White ceilings can enhance a room's natural light by allowing the light to bounce around.
IBB AT HOME 35
KITCHEN, DINING & FAMILY ROOM This open floor plan is ideal for large families and those who love to entertain. The Kelly green accent paint was repeated in the dining area. A black and white patterned rug grounds the space and provides contrast to the painted white dining chairs. The kitchen was designed with crisp white cabinetry. One of the highlights is the chevron backsplash created with 2x6 inch black tiles defined by white grout.
Upholstered dining chairs covered in a vertical black and white stripe were used in the breakfast nook to make a statement around the dining table. A smaller scaled black and white pattern on the drapery embraces the design trend of layering with pattern. The study of contrast continues into the family room where crisp white upholstery surrounds a large-scaled chevron patterned rug. Pops of Kelly green are brought in through pillows and accessories.
IBB AT HOME 37
MASTER BEDROOM A fresh, yet cozy feel was the goal of the master bedroom's design. The bed wall was painted in a rich black to contrast with a crisp white upholstered bed and nightstands. The bedding was kept fairly simple in order to not compete with other statements in the room. Green malachite patterned pillows and a patterned toe warmer at the end of the bed add style to the room, and a black dresser was selected for balance. A large stripe was used on the wing chair with black buttons for tufting to simulate an additional polka dot pattern.
KIDS’ ROOMS The color palette and stripe motif was carried into the kids' rooms where a racing theme was chosen for the boy and a dog theme for the girl. The boy's room features a roadway stripe around the entire room. Large black, white and green stripes were painted in the girl's room.

INGREDIENTS SERVINGS: 6
FOR THE DUCK • 6 brined duck breasts • 1 tablespoon olive oil • Salt and pepper, to taste FOR THE SWEET POTATOES • 4 sweet potatoes, washed and dried • 3 tablespoons olive oil • Sugar and salt, to taste
DIRECTIONS FOR THE SWEET POTATOES Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Cut sweet potatoes in two-inch thick round disks, you will probably only get 3-4 pieces per sweet potato. Place each disk onto cutting board. Using a round metal ring mold, punch out center of sweet potatoes. Place the finished pieces into a mixing bowl, toss with olive oil, salt and pepper. Roast until tender, approximately 12-15 minutes.
FOR THE CARROT FOAM • 1 quart carrot juice • 1/4 cup peeled ginger, chopped • 2 tablespoons lecithin, ground • Sugar and salt, to taste
FOR THE CARROT FOAM Simmer all ingredients in a deep sauce pot. When ready to serve, froth warm liquid with a hand-held immersion blender. Scoop foam off the top and serve.
FOR THE GARNISH • 2 cups snap peas, blanched • 1/2 cup yellow bell peppers, thinly sliced • 2 mangos, cut into small 1-1/2” rounds • 2 teaspoons Togarashi spice
TO COOK THE DUCK Season the entire duck breast with salt and pepper. In a large sauté pan, over medium heat, add the olive oil. When the oil is hot, add the duck breast, skin side down. Sear for six minutes. Flip the duck breasts over and turn off heat. Leave duck breasts in pan for another two to three minutes. Remove the duck breasts from the pan, and allow the breasts to rest two to three minutes before slicing. Slice each duck breast, lengthwise directly in half. Season exposed flesh with salt. Serve right away.

Add duck to the dish along with a couple of pieces of the mango. Spoon carrot foam around and sprinkle a bit of the Togarashi onto the plate. Serve.

SUMMER
SOIRÉEE BY KATE JOLLIFFE THE EVERYDAY HOSTESS
THEEVERYDAYHOSTESS.COM PHOTOGRAPHY BY: LINDSAY DAVENPORT LINDSAY DAVENPORT PHOTOGRAPHY
Summer is officially here, so it’s time to dust off the patio furniture, bring out the lawn games, and prepare for your summer soirée! Whether you’re looking to host a formal seasonal dinner or casual pool party, these tips and tricks will help to ensure your summer gathering goes off without a hitch!
GUEST LIST & INVITATIONS A well-done invitation gives your guests a glimpse of just how classy your summer soirée will be. It's the first chance to sweep them off their feet, so make sure your invitations portray the theme and experience you want to create. DÉCOR Decorations can turn a simple gathering into its own little world for your guests, and set the ambiance and formality for the entire evening. Select a simple and bright color palette to incorporate into all aspects of the decor. I am a firm believer that it’s all in the details, so be sure to add a few extra special touches to completely transform the party. For my backyard summer picnic, I went with a yellow, coral and aqua palette to create a light and airy atmosphere. A yellow picnic blanket with decorative pillows, paper straws, gorgeous floral arrangements, and table settings all helped to create a casual, yet sophisticated summer soirée. MENU No gathering is complete without the perfect menu! Summer is all about highlighting fresh foods, so try to incorporate seasonal ingredients. I like to provide easy, servable and bite-sized dishes such as watermelon, sliders, and chips and guacamole. Complement the food with a selection of refreshing beverages. In addition to beer and wine, it’s nice to serve a signature cocktail such as a fruit sangria or margarita. Also, be sure to include a non-alcoholic drink in your options, such as a fresh lemonade. ENTERTAINMENT It’s always fun to have an interactive element to encourage mingling, especially if your guests don’t know each other well. For a casual backyard party, I love lawn games like croquet or bocce ball. For those inspired by graphic design, a festive scorecard could be added here! You could also set up a fire pit for your guests to make s’mores. Make sure to have a fun music playlist in the background to enhance the mood as well. Finally, relax and enjoy your party! Don’t worry about cleaning while your guests are still there; that can wait until they leave. Have a cocktail or two, and enjoy your company. You’ve worked hard! Share your summer party ideas by tagging @the_everyday_ hostess on Instagram.

IBB DESIGN DWELL WITH DIGNITY THRIFT STUDIO DESIGN BY SHAY GEYER, MEGHAN SEBREN, MARY HELEN PETERS & ERIN LETRY
We were honored and thrilled to design a vignette for the second time for Dwell with Dignity's annual fundraiser Thrift Studio. The event features fully-furnished vignettes designed by Dallas' top interior designers utilizing donated products and merchandise. The public can shop from these amazing spaces and score unbelievable deals on designer home furnishings and accessories. While shopping the Dwell with Dignity warehouse for furnishings to use in our vignette, we stumbled upon two beautiful jewel toned ikat pillow cases. We had them framed as art and they served as inspiration for our vignette's color palette. Artist LaToya Jones, of Forever Royalty, donated a stunning piece of artwork she created especially for our design. It was one of our favorite pieces and sold within the first five minutes of the preview party. We had many other generous vendor partners to help us pull the design together. Jaipur donated two fabulous navy and teal patterned rugs. Times Two Design's agate lollipops and lacquered boxes were a huge hit with the crowd and the perfect accessories for any space. Worlds Away donated two metallic gold lamps which we used on the mirrored chests. The scale of their lamps provide dramatic focus and they’re always a favorite lamp design of our IBB staff. Foster's Point graciously donated the tall grass planters to create a divider for our vignette space. Our custom drapery panels were created with assistance from Fabricut/S. Harris, Passion for Fabric & Design Elements. We were so excited to select a painting from Melissa Ellis’ collection during the Thrift Studio Art Party to use in our vignette as well. We are proud to partner with Dwell with Dignity throughout the year. We encourage you to learn more about how they give back to our community and find ways you can get involved. www.dwellwithdignity.org

KIDS’ CORNER Interior Design by Shay Geyer Written by Jaylie Geyer Photography by Dan Piassick
ING BUNK with Brooklyn
This month I’m sharing one of my favorite rooms with you! It’s the bunk room my mom designed for my little sister and me. It’s really Brooklyn’s room, but because she loves to sleep with me, mom and dad decided to change hers so we could sleep together for lots of sleepover fun! My mom really thought of all the details when she designed the built-in bunk beds. She included a ledge at each bunk, which is perfect for setting a drink or my glasses on when we go to bed at night. There is also an outlet for charging electronic devices and a sconce at each bunk, so we have extra light for reading bedtime stories. To make getting into the top bunks safer, my mom specified stairs instead of a ladder. Each bunk is personalized with custom art. I have a “J” for Jaylie, Brooklyn has a “B”, Roxy, our Boxer, has a Boxer caricature at her bunk, and the fourth bunk has our framed bedtime prayer. The room even has a built-in desk. My little sister loves to use it for art projects, and I use it for homework and studying. The built-in shelves are filled with lots of books, since we both love to read and hear stories. We also use the shelves to display special artwork and keepsakes including handmade teddy bears made by my great grandma’s sister. My mom remodeled the bathroom as part of the project as well. White tile and a frameless glass shower were used to open up and lighten the space. My sister’s favorite color is pink, so my mom chose a fun, hot pink shade for the bathroom vanity. I love the mirror she selected for the bathroom too. It has a really great design and works perfectly with the other chrome accents in the bathroom. My friends always rave about the bunk room when they come over. It’s a great design for kids of all ages!
