RICH RUBY

This sophisticated jewel tone is a deep red hue that is characterized as passionate and invigorating. A stimulating color, it can be used as a bold accent or in larger doses to energize a space. Dining rooms and kitchens are popular areas to use shades of red, as it is known for stimulating both appetite and conversation. Reds are making a big comeback in interiors, as we are beginning to see a wide range of furnishings and home accents offered in various shades of the hue. Check out a few of our favorite ways to incorporate ruby into your home.

Tip: Always sample the paint in your space before diving in and painting the entire room. Just because it looks fabulous in your friend’s home, doesn’t mean it will look equally stunning in yours. There are many factors that can influence how paint looks in a space.

in style

BY SHANNON GIDNEY IBB DESIGNER shannon@ibbdesign.com @shannongidneyibb on Instagram

Who says that your home office has to be the typical combination of an executive desk, leather rolling desk chair, large computer screen, and cords galore? Home offices are evolving with more people working remotely than ever before. I recently cooked up the perfect, casual work environment for a client, complete with a fireplace, cozy chairs, and storage cocktail ottoman to rest his feet atop. Who wouldn’t want to set up camp there and settle in for a conference call or catch up on emails? An inviting study with comfortable chairs provides a less stuffy environment and is a tranquil space to focus on the task at hand. One might even consider a chaise lounge for a more intimate setting or perhaps four conversation chairs circling around an ottoman for quaint meetings outside of the office. The space can also double as a nice area to have those important talks with the family. If you have a typical home office, consider spicing it up and experimenting with a new setup. For those who need a desk, you can still do so – perhaps consider incorporating a smaller writing desk into the mix.

DESIGNER TIPS

ART TYPES Art has been around for thousands of years, first adorning cave walls and telling stories of life and adventure. Continuously evolving in styles, mediums, and colors — art is a wonderful way to find direction when adorning your home. Art gives you permission to layer elsewhere in your room any color that exists in the piece. When selecting artwork, always purchase something that speaks to you. Art should evoke emotion when you view it. Does it make you happy or sad? Does it have energy or is it quiet? Does it tell a story or is it simply a way to introduce color into a room as an overall design plan? When considering an art purchase, be aware that there are three main types. Print art is usually reproduced in large quantities and sold framed under glass. In this form, there are many options in terms of subject matter, and they are typically the least expensive. The next type is called giclée, a French word meaning to spray ink on canvas. This process allows a high-definition image to be reproduced onto canvas, which gives the look of an original piece. This option, though, costs far less money than original artwork. The other type to consider is an original work of art. These are generally the most expensive because they are one-of-a-kind and not reproduced. Original art pieces can be painted on canvas or wood. There are also many different mediums: acrylic, oil, watercolor, and pencil and pen to name a few. While these pieces are usually framed, more contemporary works may not be. Some works may be purchased as an investment – something that will grow in value, but most art is considered decorative and is valued for its enjoyment. Don’t be afraid to mix styles and colors. Picking up art while traveling can be a great way to have memories attached to your purchase. Art should be an enjoyable acquisition. No matter what art style speaks to you, select something you love.

DESIGNER TIPS

SELECTING THE PERFECT

chandelier

C

handeliers are a beautiful accent to any space! They allow you not only to illuminate your surroundings, but also to add a little wow factor. With tons of materials, finishes, and designs in the marketplace, chandeliers can be a subtle complement to your room or a standalone piece of art. Mixing metals within the light fixture can add depth, stone and crystals can enhance a glam factor, and colored glass can inject a bold pop of color.

MIXING METALS WITHIN THE LIGHT FIXTURE CAN ADD DEPTH

When selecting a fixture, always make sure the scale of the chandelier fits the space where it is being placed. A large island with two small pendants will be underwhelming, while a dining table with a chandelier as big as the table will feel heavy and over scaled. Height placement is also an important factor. With a dining table, for example, you want the fixture to hang low enough that it makes an impact, but high enough that you can accessorize the table. The ideal placement is usually somewhere between 30 to 35 inches above the table. Today, there are many different bulb options. LED or halogen may be preferable for your home, based on energy efficiency and the overall color mood you are trying to create. Speaking with an interior designer can help you determine your goals and select a fixture that is perfect for your space!

DESIGNER TIPS

BEHIND THE DESIGN: A SOPHISTICATED LOOK FOR A BACHELOR PAD

In so many instances, dining rooms are primarily designed with thoughts of big family dinners and celebrating holidays. That isn’t necessarily practical, though, for every person’s lifestyle. I have many clients who office out of their homes. The guests they’re entertaining rarely include mom or dad or children who need stain-resistant fabrics. It also isn’t imperative for them to have a surface that won’t scratch if Fido jumps up on the edge of the table. For some people, these more formal spaces are treated like showplaces. Since they aren’t necessarily used for everyday dining, we can focus not on practicality, but rather on high-style through the incorporation of exotic surface finishes and luxe fabrics. This space was designed for a high-rise property in downtown Dallas, and like any project, I focused on creating a design that embraced the architecture of the space, which takes any design to the next level. This space was designed with a bachelor in mind. Interest is created by using a palette of grays juxtaposed by high-gloss and metallic finishes – while saving a little room for a bold and sexy red. The styling was kept very minimal to embrace the openness of the space and the innately industrial architecture. By keeping these additional elements very controlled, we achieve a very clean yet striking aesthetic. Also, in featuring a singular piece of pop art, we could focus heavily on the beautiful skyline, which was one of the biggest selling features of this condo. While my client does spend much of his time jet setting around the world, this showplace of a home is perfect for entertaining large groups of potential investors or simply entertaining friends for the evening. Just like anything else, design is not onesize fits all; it’s about creating something that speaks to your aesthetic and suits your personal lifestyle.

SNEAK extra seating into your home

Ottomans are a staple when designing living rooms because they are a great way to incorporate an unexpected pop of color or a fun pattern! They are amazing from a design perspective, but are also an ideal solution to create additional seating in your space. With the holidays upon us, everyone is preparing their homes for guests. Whether you have family coming into town or are hosting an event, coming up with additional seating is always at the top of the list. This is where the functionality of ottomans comes into play. By replacing your current cocktail table with a great cocktail ottoman or adding a pair of accent ottomans, you instantly create additional

seating. You can place accent ottomans just about anywhere in your room, and you won’t have to fret about not having enough seating to accommodate your guests. I especially love ottomans that have recessed casters so they are easy to move around and rearrange. I am obsessed with cocktail tables that allow ottomans to be tucked underneath them, so you don’t necessarily have to use them all the time. There are many different styles of ottomans. Find the perfect cocktail ottoman or accent ottomans that are not only functional during the holidays, but also that you will love long after your guests have left.

COVER STORY

During the holidays, we are often gifted with more time to hang out and relax with family and friends. We’re seeing a big trend in clients requesting that multiple areas in their homes be designed with family gatherings in mind. We’ve compiled a few of our favorite family-friendly spaces and design advice for gaining the most out of each space.

FAMILY WORKSPACE Consider designing your home office or study for multi-functional use where more than one person can work at a time. Here we floated a glass sawhorse desk in front of a built-in credenza. A small ottoman was tucked under the desk where kids can do homework or color while mom or dad works on the computer. The yellow leather chair is the ideal spot to sit and read by the fire. A blue leather modern chesterfield sofa rests in front of the window for more seating, and we placed a malachite and brass drink table beside it that can also be used as a work surface for a laptop.

SELECT FURNISHINGS THAT GIVE THE OPPORTUNITY FOR MORE THAN ONE PERSON TO WORK IN THE ROOM AT A TIME

IBB AT HOME 25

There’s nothing more important in designing a home than tailoring it to the family’s style. These clients wanted to make their open floor plan feel cozier and more personalized. Layers of texture and a soothing color palette offer an ideal setting for long evenings of laughter and conversation by the fire. The triptych was created by the couple’s daughter, a talented artist. It’s the perfect personal touch for their great room.

FORM AND FUNCTION ARE KEY AND YES YOU CAN HAVE BOTH.

PRACTICAL DOESN’T HAVE TO BE BORING Many clients want sectionals in their family rooms. At times, they are conflicted because they think it won’t be a good choice aesthetically. In this room, we designed a large sectional in a neutral body fabric. Color was brought in with decorative pillows and throws. A large colorful oil painting combined with an installation of sculptural metal flowers creates a focal point above part of the sectional. A hand-knotted teal rug grounds the sitting area and adds interest through pattern and color. Swivel chairs allow the opportunity to watch TV or to turn and partake in a conversation happening in the adjoining kitchen.

DIVIDING A LARGE ROOM INTO MULTIPLE FURNITURE ARRANGEMENTS CAN MAKE IT FEEL MUCH COZIER AND MORE INTIMATE. UPHOLSTERED COCKTAIL OTTOMANS CAN BE USED TO PLACE A DRINK, KICK YOUR FEET UP, OR OFFER EXTRA SEATING FOR GUESTS.

INTERIOR DESIGN BY BETH RAFFERTY, SHAY GEYER & MARY HELEN PETERS

Dividing a large room into multiple furniture arrangements can make it feel much cozier and more intimate. In this mountain vacation home, we designated two seating areas – one for TV viewing and one for conversations by the fireplace. We selected swivel chairs for each seating area to allow both groups to interact easily. A custom shag rug unifies the two arrangements.

CONQUERING A LARGE SPACE IBB AT HOME 31

SUNBRELLA AND OTHER INDOOR/OUTDOOR FABRICS ARE A GREAT FAMILY-FRIENDLY OPTION FOR YOUR UPHOLSTERY.

FUNCTIONAL FAMILY FARMHOUSE STYLE This young growing family entertains friends and family quite frequently and wanted to take full advantage of their open kitchen and family room. Plenty of seating and a happy color palette were at the top of their list. The room offers seating for eight with a large sofa in Sunbrella fabric, a pair of swivel chairs, a chair and ottoman, and two other ottomans that can be easily moved around the room. The large, distressed cocktail table was selected as the perfect spot for family game night or for the kids to sit and color while watching cartoons. The most popular seats in the house for breakfast and snack time for their three boys are the swivel counter stools, also upholstered in a Sunbrella fabric.

IF YOU KNOW YOUR ANIMALS WILL WANT TO SNUGGLE ON YOUR FURNITURE, PLAN AHEAD AND KNOW THE TRICKS OF THE TRADE FOR MAINTAINING YOUR UPHOLSTERY.

PET-FRIENDLY INTERIORS Let’s face it, Fido thinks it’s his world and you just live in it. If you know your animals will want to snuggle on your furniture, plan ahead. Choose durable or indoor/outdoor fabrics for your upholstery. Durable fabrics have come a long way. They even have outdoor velvets now! You can also have your upholstery treated for stain protection. Make sure to select a sofa and chairs with loose back cushions. Attached backs won’t allow you to flip and fluff your cushions. This is key to maintaining the longevity of upholstery. Vacuuming your upholstery will also help with the breakdown of your fabric and cushion fibers.

We’re seeing more and more clients requesting that their game room and media room areas be combined. In this vacation home, their recreation room combines an area to watch TV and movies with a shuffleboard area and a dining/gaming table. This arrangement provides endless opportunities for the ultimate entertainment!

ULTIMATE ENTERTAINMENT

IBB AT HOME 37

PRETTY & PRACTICAL Most family rooms and great rooms have a TV in them. Many times, the best viewing placement in the room ends up being over the fireplace. How do you plan for the room to function the way it should and still be pretty? Yes, it’s okay to place the TV over the fireplace if that provides optimal viewing for the room’s layout. There are many decorating solutions for this design dilemma. Here, we hung three hand-blown glass plates around the TV and kept the mantle accessories simple. It dresses up the area without being distracting. You can also get a custom frame for your TV. The seating is arranged in this room for optimal TV viewing. We used a sofa, two club chairs, and two swivel chairs. A pair of ottomans offers additional pull-up seating. Since we floated the sofa and sitting area in the room, we anchored the large back wall by using an iron and marble wall-mount console.

SELECT CONTRACT GRADE, INDOOR/ OUTDOOR AND OTHER DURABLE MATERIALS FOR YOUR UPHOLSTERY.

DURABLE FABRICS In this family room design, the client requested durable fabrics that would sustain their love of entertaining family and friends. A chocolate brown mohair sofa provides seating for three. Mohair is one of the most durable fabrics in our industry. A pair of chairs upholstered in a contract grade cut velvet stripe brings color and pattern to one side of the room while white leather Barcelona chairs offer more seating on the other side.
