WELCOME IBB Design has been named “Best Furniture Store in the Country” for the second consecutive year by the ARTS Awards.

I’m thrilled to share that IBB Design Fine Furnishings has been named “Best Furniture Store in the Country” for the second consecutive year by the ARTS Awards – the premier international awards program for the home furnishings industry.

OWNER/DESIGNER PUBLISHER BETH RAFFERTY

When I started IBB, my goal was to offer a turnkey solution to interior design. In our store you will find in-stock fine furniture and accessories with a designer look, and the best in customer service to help make your interior design process as easy as possible. I couldn’t be more proud of the team we have at IBB who help clients transform their homes each day. IBB patrons have access to unique merchandise throughout our retail showroom designed by leading visual merchandisers. Our talented team of 28 interior designers has a wealth of product knowledge and experience to help your design dreams come to life. It may be old-fashioned, but it seems the simple joys of shopping have been lost in a world of big box stores and online retail. Brick-and-mortar stores offer you a chance to touch product, actually feel the fabric of a sofa, or sit at a dining table before you place it in your home. And, it’s not just about seeing the product face-to-face, it’s about knowing what you’re purchasing. Many other stores have a sales team working the floor; at IBB our team is more than just that. They are experienced professional designers here to help with each selection to customize a beautifully designed space just for you. Because all of this – our team, merchandise and customer service – we are honored with the “Best Furniture Store in the Country” award. We do it all for you – our clients.

your life in style.

Our spring issue is packed with visual inspiration and helpful tips for using color to decorate and living a designer life.

letter from the editor

Spring is one of my absolute favorite times of the year. I love all of the gorgeous color nature provides during these months. It puts a huge smile on my face to see the lush greens of budding leaves and vibrant colors of blooming flowers. It’s also perfect patio weather! Our cover story this issue, Hello Color, takes us inside a stunning Preston Hollow home that greets you with a gorgeous palette of color and the utmost sophistication. Our spring issue is packed with visual inspiration and helpful tips for using color to decorate and living a designer life. My daughter, Jaylie, interviewed my mom and me about the design for her bedroom at Grammy’s new house. IBB Designer, James “JT” Turner, showcases a transformation at Million Air® Dallas, a luxury private jet facility. Shannon Gidney offers tips on pet and kid-friendly designs, while Celebrity Chef Kent Rathbun shares two of his fabulous recipes that are perfect for your spring soiree! We were very excited to have hosted celebrity interior designer Thom Filicia for a book signing and a feature segment on Good Morning Texas. Thom was a hoot and guests loved getting a chance to secure an autographed copy of his book, American Beauty: Renovating and Decorating a Beloved Retreat. IBB patrons also had a blast at our second annual IBB Loves Local event in February, celebrating local talented artisans and shopping local in general. Check out our party pictures and events calendar for a list of the hottest upcoming events. We’re gearing up for High Point Home Furnishings’ Spring Market in April. Get an early glimpse of what we find by following us on Instagram, and let us know your favorites! (www.instagram.com/ibbdesign) Cheers to living in style with color!

fuchsia PAINTS TO CONSIDER For those more daring with color, try painting an accent wall in fuchsia or updating a piece of furniture in your home. 1. Sherwin Williams, Forward Fuschia 6842 2. Benjamin Moore, Razzle Dazzle 1348 3. Behr, Tutti Frutti S-G-100 4. Valspar, Spanish Fuchsia 30065 5. Benjamin Moore, Royal Fuchsia 2078-30 TIP: Always sample the paint in your space before diving in and painting the entire room. Just because it looks fabulous in your friend’s home, doesn’t mean it will look equally as stunning in your home. There are many factors that can influence how paint looks in a space.

We love the idea of using it in accessories or seeing it in patterns on upholstery and pillows.

TIPS FROM A DESIGNER create a cozy canvas.

Always incorporate a sturdy tabletop surface area for homework, art projects and game night.

By Shannon Gidney IBB Designer shannon@ibbdesign.com

5 TIPS FOR A kid and pet-friendly playroom When the triple digit heat hits us this summer, the kids will need a cool refuge and place to call their own. What better way to keep them occupied than a playroom furnished for entertaining, yet resilient for mom’s piece of mind. Creating a space that is both kid and pet-friendly isn’t as challenging as you’d think. Check out my five tips for designing a play space as discovered from a recent client project.

2

1

3

4

Start with a cozy canvas.

Light it up.

Be practical.

Get crafty.

An indoor/outdoor rug atop hardwood or tile flooring provides a cozy base and splash of color. It also complements the space while providing a durable and comfortable play surface.

Don’t forget the windows and lighting. These windows are dressed with a flat fold roman shade and the ceiling is finished off with a two-tiered drum shade light fixture. After all, it’s important to have good light in the space for a cheerful, happy room.

Storage is key in any playroom. Cabinets under window seating are great for books and toys, while tall storage is a perfect place to pile all their stuffed animals. Be practical to meet the needs of a kid-friendly space.

Always incorporate a sturdy tabletop surface area for homework, art projects and game night. This game table offers just that for hours of entertainment.

5

Find durable furnishings. Select furniture that is comfortable and durable. This specially designed bean bag cushion is very kid and pet-friendly, as are the custom window seat cushions. As you can see, a big hit with the family’s dog, Sydney. The houndstooth fabric with plush contrast welting ties in the window seating for a cohesive design that is both comfortable and durable.

UNLIKELY PAIRINGS find the pieces you love first!

Options you thought wouldn’t complement each other, can turn out to be amazing combinations!

By Meghan Sebren IBB Visual Merchandiser meghan@ibbdesign.com

Unlikely Pairing#2

Unlikely Pairing #1

unlikely pairs make for fun designs.

Unlikely Pairing #1

Work backward. Design different. As a visual merchandiser, I often have a different perspective and method for putting a room together. You might say I work backward most days, finding the pieces I want to showcase and then assembling them to work within a space – as opposed to letting the room determine which furnishings I select. Consequently, I discovered how much fun working with unlikely pairs can be. Frequently those options you thought wouldn’t work together, turn out to be amazing combinations! For example, don’t be afraid to pair the antique bed you already have with a new mirrored chest, or try a

traditional oil painting with abstract pieces. Ultimately, the love you feel for each piece in the room is what makes a space feel special, inviting and personal. Unlikely Pairing #1:

A nice mix of polished and natural elements. The raw wood bowl and earth tones of the desk highlight the shiny gold on the stools. The soft gold lamp and deep brass in the shadow box maintain a focused theme, while adding depth by mixing tones. Keeping the color palette minimal and concentrated allows you to add different finishes

and textures which complement without being too busy. Unlikely Pairing #2: Color with clean lines and traditional curves. The brass nailhead-studded sideboard brings a traditional element to the space, and inspires the pairing of orange velvet carved ottomans. The muted abstract art highlights the rich orange, and allows the mirrored lamps and gold starburst mirror to shine rather than compete. Again, a focused color palette lets you appreciate all the details in the space.

COLOR! A happy colorful welcome is what you’ll get when you step inside this gorgeous Preston Hollow home. Interior Design by Shay Geyer Photography by Dan Piassick

IBB AT HOME 13

entry way a cheerful welcome! A happy colorful welcome is what you’ll get when you step inside this gorgeous Preston Hollow home. That was exactly the feeling that Fred & Cindy Balda were after when they hired IBB Designer Shay Geyer after recommendations from friends. They wanted a comfortable and well-designed home to fit their family’s needs and traditional style. The neutral finish out of the home provided the perfect backdrop for the beautiful saturated colors in upholstery and furnishings to shine. The rich vibrant color that greets you in the entry and formal living room sets the tone for this happy home. An octagonal mirrored entry table makes an elegant statement on the curved staircase wall. The classic lines and simple shape do not compete with the intricate wrought iron staircase. A pair of orange ottomans nestled underneath the table offers a warm pop of color and additional pull-up seating for entertaining.

formal living The navy blue for this color palette was chosen as the jumping off point when Cindy fell in love with the sculpted zebra wing chairs during one of her design meetings with Shay at IBB Design. Orange was selected as a supporting color and aqua as an accent. A sofa from

vibrant color sets the tone for a happy home the homeowner’s previous home was reupholstered in lush navy velvet and custom pillows were added to tie in the room’s color scheme. Shay and Cindy chose to not drape the soaring windows in order to keep the views to the resort-like backyard open and visible from the front door. The

keyhole shaped mirror fits seamlessly into the cast stone fireplace design. Lighted bookshelves on either side of the fireplace are decorated with family photos and treasures, as well as artwork and accessories chosen to support the design plan.

rich contrast warm colors

The Baldas wanted a warm masculine feel for the home’s study. The wood paneling gives rich contrast to the light neutrals on the upholstery and rugs. Since it is one of the first rooms to see when you enter the home, powerful abstract art was selected to hang on the focal wall above the traditional tufted back sofa. Orange, blue gray and wheat were the chosen colors for the space. A brass and marble bunching cocktail table and brass chandelier brings warmth into the room in the metal finishes. The leather end table plays to the masculine vibe of the space. To the right of the fireplace, a gray wood accent chair upholstered in an ikat chevron pattern was selected. A work area is defined with a stunning curved wood and brass desk.

family space

for family life

Fred & Cindy both loved the cobalt blue patterned chairs they found at IBB and knew they wanted to work them into their family room’s design. The color palette was then developed based on the embroidered ikat linen fabric selected for the drapery panels. From there, turquoise and a soft green were layered in with the blue. Comfy swivel chairs were designed in aqua with a contrasting blue welt cord, and accessorized with embroidered pillows to carry the color scheme. Their ottomans were updated with a soft green fabric and aqua Greek key trim tape. A floating iron and onyx console makes a remarkable statement hanging on the wall adjacent to the walk-in bar. A traditional oil painting and sculptural lamps complete the look. IBB AT HOME 17

breakfast nook family-friendly comfort Durability and family-friendly fabrics were top priority for this space. Blue ostrich embossed vinyl was used for the dining chair seats and barstools. The Baldas loved the idea of a bench at the nook table so one was incorporated that coordinates with the dining chair frame.

master bedroom a restful palette

A restful palette was requested for the master bedroom. The embroidered damask fabric used on the drapery panels was the inspiration for the room’s design. Gray, gold and cream are carried through the room to create a soft and elegant feel. Custom fabric cornices were created to match the wall paint color and disguise headers for the motorized shades. The Baldas can enjoy their morning coffee or watch TV from the sitting area in their upholstered & wood frame chairs and matching ottoman. The chest of drawers with gold fretwork and sunburst mirror are one of their favorite pieces in the room. For a touch of luxe, crystal lamps were selected to use on the nightstands. The winged upholstered bed has beautiful French details without being overly fussy and aligns with the updated traditional aesthetic. The washable velvet coverlet makes the bedding practical and the monogrammed pillow adds a personal touch. IBB AT HOME 19

Million Air Lobby

Pilot’s Lounge BEFORE

FIRST IMPRESSIONS MATTER. THE IMPORTANCE OF GOOD DESIGN. You know the saying, “you never get a second chance to make a first impression”? Well, that can certainly be applied to interiors and is especially important for businesses. I’m privileged to have both residential and commercial clients at IBB Design. One of the amazing businesses I’ve recently had the chance to work with is Million Air® Dallas, an aircraft charter, safety, maintenance and aircraft management company. Million Air is committed to excellence and has more than 30 years of results-driven performance – their success speaks for itself. However, the welcome lobby and pilots’ lounge were lacking in the first impression department.

My task was to redesign the lobby and lounge to meet their high standards of professionalism and I welcomed the opportunity. These spaces needed to be stylish, inviting and comfortable – while maintaining durability and functionality. In the main reception area, my goal was to create a sophisticated, elegant and timeless look by incorporating leather, mohair and wool – all luxurious durable fabrics. In place of a black leather sofa on a hard marble floor, which offered zero contrast, I added a cream hand-knotted rug playing on an animal print, and an earth-toned sofa to visually soften and warm up the space.

The Pilot’s Lounge was previously dark and cavernous. The crisp white walls allow for the art and accessories to take center stage. To create a more enjoyable and energetic space, I really bumped up the color. There was also limited seating in the lounge, so I introduced a sectional and two ottomans to double as seating or foot rests. The team at Million Air was appreciative and enthusiastic about their updated spaces. After all, that visual first impression is just as important as the first associate greeting a client when they visit Million Air.

Kid’s CORNER Interior Design by Beth Rafferty & Shay Geyer I Interview by Jaylie Geyer Photography by Dan Piassick I’m so excited to share a very special project with you all this issue. My Grammy and IBB founder, Beth Rafferty, recently moved into a new house which is right down the street from us. I absolutely love the room my mom and Grammy designed for my little sister and me, so I sat down with them to get the scoop on all of the fun details they used to pull our room together. Jaylie: What was the inspiration for the design? Shay: Grammy and I found the “I love you” fabric and knew we had to use it somewhere in the room. The scale of the script writing was perfect to make it a focal point, so we decided to use it to upholster the wall behind the bed.

I absolutely love the room my mom and Grammy designed for my little sister and me. Jaylie: Grammy, What’s your favorite thing in the room? Beth: That’s a tough one. We had so much fun with all of the special details of the design. I love the bed. The room is large enough that we chose a queen size bed. We used Benjamin Moore’s Symphony Blue on the bed frame as well as the three surrounding walls. It helps give the room contrast and balance. The bed is upholstered in a crisp white fabric and the frame is highlighted with pink grosgrain ribbon and chrome nailheads. Jaylie: What are some of the ways you personalized the room for Brooklyn and me?

Shay: I chose to create artwork by framing photos of the two of you on acrylic. They were a Christmas present to Grammy and I know it’s one of her favorite things in her new home. The white background of the photos provides a great contrast with the rich blue walls, and I coordinated your tutus and leotards in the navy and pink color palette to match the room’s design. We also chose to use a desk on one side of the bed because we knew how much you both love to do crafts and write. We arranged a collage of black and white family photos on canvas from one of our favorite family vacations and hung them by the desk. Jaylie: How did you design our new bathroom? Beth: We selected marble floors and countertops in a crisp white for a fresh feel. We carried the color palette into the space with blue on the walls and a pink patterned fabric for the shower curtain. We thought the ikat heart pattern was a perfect compliment to the “I love you” theme, and the shower curtain panels really showcase the huge ceilings in the bathroom. They’re the perfect finishing touch for the space.
