The need

Future Cities Dialogue

•  The ci/es that have done best throughout history are those that have best met the core and shiEing needs of their ci/zens •  Increasing global urbanisa/on, and decreasing resources mean ci/es will have to do more with less •  This means not just doing things beKer, but doing beKer things

The opportunity

Future Cities Dialogue

The market for integra/on services is very large, but what does it prac/cally look like? •  Which systems can be integrated? •  Where does integra/on lead to resilience, and where instability? •  What do ci/zens want from integrated systems? •  How do we ensure that the compe//ons we run and the projects we back are heading towards the integrated urban future that people want? . . . . so that we can improve urban resilience & UK business success

UK ci/es are dense and centred around small, self–contained communi/es. Urban services are integrated on a small–scale and by repurposing exis/ng infrastructure. They are oEen locally–run, and include everything from health to energy to food supply. Innova/on is ci/zen–led and enabled by distributed manufacturing technologies and digital plaVorms.

This is a high–tech, highly integrated world. The internet of things is everywhere, and virtual reality is commonplace and widely used for work and leisure. People wear devices that gather data about their health, ea/ng habits, and leisure, and then sell this informa/on to private companies or exchange it for services. There are high levels of automa/on and correspondingly high rates of unemployment and inequality; a large sec/on of society survives on a small basic income topped up by sporadic work in the virtual economy.

The UK has moved to a federal system of governance and devolu/on to large city–regions. The popula/on has grown to over 73 million people, and the UK looks set to have the largest popula/on in the EU in the next 5 years. Na/onal government has been slimmed down but s/ll has a strong role holding the regions together, framing na/onal policy in areas such as defence and foreign policy, and overseeing key connec/ve na/onal infrastructure such as intercity rail links and the na/onal grid.

8 design principles for urban integrated systems: •  Resilient and evolu)onary –  Redundancy built in –  Mul)ple solu)ons

•  Tech-‐enabled, but not tech-‐centered –  Not everything has to be ‘smart’ –  Encourage social interac)on and build skills

•  Well-‐governed –  Governance comes from many quarters

•  Sustainable –  Enable urban natural capital –  Build social fabric Future Cities Dialogue

8 design principles for urban integrated systems: •  Human centered –  Integra)ng systems = integra)ng people –  S)mulate par)cipa)on

•  Globally linked –  Learn from others –  Create communi)es of interest

•  Value networked –  Costs and benefits of system change fall on many –  Convene the unusual suspects

•  Transparent –  Respect for privacy & data ownership Future Cities Dialogue

Next steps a)  Focus the city impera/ve b)  S/mulate new innova/ons c)  Develop new business models d)  Understand and build the ci/zen markets Future Cities Dialogue
