nstance Lake Co journey s–A Garden h time throug

Nearly 1,200 years ago, a monk from Reichenau wrote the booklet “Hortulus”, Europe‘s first guidebook to horticulture. In it, he described 24 medicinal plants and explains how they can be used. Today, primarily tomatoes, cucumbers, etc. grow on “Vegetable Island”, but in the former monastery garden, an herb garden planted based on the old standard, displays the plants from the Hortulus.

In the first third of the 19th century, Emperor Napoleon III and the famous landscape gardener, Prince Pückler, planned a landscape park full of surprises. The Grottenberg, which is surrounded by water, and the ice cellar still impress visitors today, as does the singularly beautiful view of Lake Constance. In addition, on Arenenberg, the reconstruction of a medieval patrician‘s garden with lawn benches, fountains and a grassy labyrinth.

The magic and diversity of the garden grounds at the former Carthusian monastery invite you to rest and enjoy. Herbs, vegetables, hops and wine gardens can be discovered on four topical routes with the help of an audio guide. More than 1,000 rose bushes and the largest historical rose collection in Switzerland transform the grounds into a unique floral dream every year. Those seeking calm will find their centre in the serenity of the thyme labyrinth. The flower island is a feast for horticulture fans. In addition to the unbelievable number of flowers (hundreds of thousands of tulips and daffodils, an Italian rose garden, 12,000 dahlias from more than 2,500 varieties), the gardens also boast a butterfly house, a glass palm tree house and an orchid show. And: Many exotic trees on the island were planted 150 years ago. Mainau GmbH D-78465 Insel Mainau Phone +49 (0)7531 30 info@mainau.de | www.mainau.de www.bodenseegaerten.eu |

CH-BBZ Arenenberg

The garden at the New Castle makes an impression with its wonderful panoramic view of Lake Constance. The strictly composed garden grounds with their low hedges are typical for this period of the baroque era. The pleasure garden was constructed in 1712, the plans were drawn by the castle master builder, Christoph Gessinger. The original lower terrace with the picturesque pavilion has even been preserved.

The Bildungs- und Beratungszentrum (BBZ – educational and consulting centre) Arenenberg lies directly at the castle, with a view of Lake Constance and a large training and test garden. Different vegetables, herbs and berry cultures flourish here in the neighbourhood of an impressive flower garden. The BBZ is also experimenting with different cultivation techniques for special plants such as mini kiwis, chokeberries and table grapes.

D/CH-“Garten-Rendezvous Untersee”

In the centre of the park and garden grounds lies the former Cistercian Monastery and current Castle Salem. The grounds lives from its cultural diversity. Representative, French-style baroque gardens meet a lovingly tended viewing vineyard. Baroque courtyard gardens with a labyrinth and geometrically arranged beds make an impression and vast park grounds with old trees invite you take a stroll.

From the enchanted tree garden to the magnificent castle park, the German-Swiss side of Lake Constance offers a heavenly diversity of rural horticulture. At the “Horticulture meeting”, viewing gardens and park grounds invite you to visit. Many private people receive guests in their own personal green havens. Tours, hikes and cultural events on the topic of horticulture complete the offer.

Mainau Island „Beyond the horizon ... Discover new perspectives“ On Mainau Island, visitors can discover a variety of views of the picturesque landscapes of Lake Constance: out to the horizon, to the heights of the Bodanrück, the hills of Linzgau or, on clear days, even to the peaks of the Alps. As an attentive observer, everywhere you look, you will discover orientation points and objects and distinctive shapes in the landscape that make the view truly interesting. A central “viewpoint” in the flower year 2014 is the roof garden of the newly opened restaurant, Comturey in the redesigned Mainau harbour. » www.mainau.de

Ittingen Charterhouse with topical garden routes On Sunday, June 1, four topical routes through the gardens of the Ittinger Charterhouse will be opened. With the audio guide, the topics: “Garden & landscape”, “Silence & spirituality”, “Art & reflection” and “Scent & indulgence” can be experienced on the idyllic monastery grounds. The book vernissage for “The Roses in the Ittingen Charterhouse” takes place on the same Sunday. It introduces the largest historical rose collection in Switzerland. » www.kartause.ch » www.kunstmuseum.ch 14 |

Medieval garden – Wander in the footsteps of the patrician The current Arenenberg was very popular in the Middle Ages under the amusing name “Fool‘s Mountain”. Wealthy patricians from Constance used the estate as a place to relax. In the framework of the Thurgau activities for the council anniversary (2014-2018), Arenenberg has reconstructed a medieval pleasure garden. Lawn benches, fountains, aromatic plants and rose espaliers, a grassy labyrinth... everything per the instructions from the monastery library and embedded in a heavenly landscape. This new garden offer at Lake Constance can be experienced starting in April. » www.napoleonmuseum.ch Castle Salem – new „wine garden offer“ Topical tour “Wine history”. On a tour through the wine cellars, monastery with the monk‘s dining hall, cloister and church, three selected wines are available for tasting, garnished with exciting stories about the Salem wine culture. Daily at 11 AM, without prior registration. Price per person for the tour, incl. wine tasting: EUR 12.50 / CHF 16.–. » www.salem.de www.bodenseegaerten.eu |
